Reunion charter school focusing on agriculture STEAD School looks beyond farming to build its curriculum BY SCOTT TAYLOR STAYLOR@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Part of the inspiration for a new agriculture-themed high school in Commerce City came from the ground where it’s being built. “The Fulenwider family has owned that land forever and it used to a be a part of a 40,000-acre farm called Boxelder Farms,” school co-founder Kelly Leid said. “They farmed this land. It was a dry land wheat farm that grew winter wheat, sunflowers, and other kinds of farming and ranching.” But another part of the inspiration for the new school came from home builders themselves. The school is an outgrowth of Oakwood Homes development in Commerce City’s Reunion neighborhood and owner Pat Hamill’s philosophy. “For the last 20 to 25 years, one of the things Pat was confronted with was the challenge of the quality of schools,” Leid said. “What came out of that was the Foundation for Educational Excellence.” Leid ran that group for its first eight years. It’s now called BuildStrong Education. “At the root of our homebuilding business has been a real focus on assuring or helping to facilitate great schools in the communities in which we build,” Leid said. “When we became the master builder for Reunion back in 2017, we started a dialogue with 27J.” BuildStrong Education, an Oakwood Homes Foundation, championed the STEAD School. The school will offer students experiential learning through the use of hands-on materials, interdependent projects, cooperative learning, individualized lessons, internships and community service.

The school hit a milestone on May 4 when crews completed work on the building’s frame. “The school sits at the nexus of urban, rural and suburban interests,” Leid said. “Brighton is just to the north and Bennett and farmland are to the east and old Commerce City is just to the south. Part of the goal is finding a way to bring these kids together from these different experiences to solve really big problems regarding food, energy and the environment.” Leid said the school plans to accept 175 students for the graduating class of 2025. They’ll add 175 firstyear students each year until the school reaches its full enrollment of 700 students across grades 9-12, all drawn from District 27J’s student population via a lottery. “It’s a weighted lottery and the

over-arching goal is to be as diverse as possible and to meet the district’s targets,” Leid said. “We need to balance the school’s demographics, boy-to-girl as well as kids of color and etcetera.” The public charter high school, part of the School District 27J, broke ground in January 2021 and is expected to be complete just in time for the inaugural freshman class in fall 2021. Plans call for developing a ten-acre site that will expand in phases with multiple pre-engineered buildings designed to look and feel like barns. Auxiliary specialty workshops and labs will support real-world learning experiences. Roots in Agriculture STEM schools are a standard across the country, focusing students on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEAM Schools, a more recent subset, adds Arts to the mix. Leid thinks the new Commerce City school is Colorado’s only STEAD school, focusing on Science, Technology, Environment, Agriculture and Design. “This is a culmination of our work over the last 20 years,” Leid said. “We are going to focus on agriculture, so animal, plant, environmental and food science,” Leid said. “Across those four pathways are upwards of 3,000 different career possibilities, some of them in Ag, some not. Agriculture is the platform to learn and to engage. We’d obviously love to see kids stay in agriculture because we need to eat and drink and hope we can keep the planet healthy. Our kids will learn to do that in real-time.” The goal is less to promote farming as a career but to use agriculture itself as a teaching method, he said. “It’s taking all of the classic focus areas — math, science, literature, social studies, geography — and SEE STEAD, P4

Marjorie Gates

9/29/1929 - 5/5/2021 Marjorie Gates, 91, of Eaton, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at Windsong at Northridge Nursing Facility in Greeley. She was born September 29, 1929, in Boulder, Colorado, to Neil & Ruth (Vinger) Davis. She was a 1947 graduate of Fort Lupton High School and went on to attend Colorado State College of Education. She later worked at the Fort Lupton High School as a librarian until she retired in 1995. Prior to finishing her education, Marjorie worked at the Star Theatre in Fort Lupton as a ticket taker. It was there that she met Jimmie J. Gates. He would ride the bus from Platteville to see a show, but mostly to see Marjorie. They married on May 12, 1951, in Greeley and were married for 51 years. Marjorie enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She made many blankets, hats, mittens, sweaters and did needlepoint tablecloths. She loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, and her exercise classes at Bonell Good Samaritan. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eaton and the Order of Eastern Star in Fort Lupton. Marjorie’s greatest joy in her life was her children and grandchildren. She would often say, “the best times in her life were with her children and her family.” She is survived by her sons, Bruce (Margie) Gates of

San Luis Rey, California, David Gates of Greeley, Colorado, and Kevin (Margaret) Gates of Denver, Colorado, a daughter, Jane (Mike) Martin of Eaton, Colorado, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Gates, her parents, Neil & Ruth Davis, a son, Eric Gates, a sister, Elizabeth Pappas, and a brother-in-law, Mike Pappas. Our family would like to say a Special Thank You to Bristol Hospice, especially Kaitlyn, Chaplain Hope, and Wendy, for their unconditional care for our mother and the love they provided for her throughout her journey. Also, a Special Thank You to Windsong at Northridge Memory Care Staff for their constant care, love, and support for our mother, especially during this past year when our family could not be there in person. James Robert Barclay Jr. James Robert Barclay, 80, of Fort Lupton, Colorado passed away on April 21, 2021. James was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and he was the eldest child born to James and Eileen (Garrison) Barclay. James graduated from Lakewood High School in 1959 where he was a Division 4 wrestler and member of the track team. After graduation, he attended the Colorado School of Mines. James became a master electrician working on major projects such as the Eisenhower Tunnel and Denver International Airport. He received his “50 Year” service pin from Local Electrician Union, Local 68.

James Singleton Kimmel, age 86, passed away on May 1, 2021 at his residence in Hudson, Colorado. He was born on January 4, 1935 in Flat Rock, Illinois to Leo and Irene (Hewitt) Kimmel. James went to school in Illinois and continued his education and went to work in Construction contracting until his passing. He married Donna L. Markus. He was a very loving and devoted husband for 50+ years. He loved his wife Donna dearly along with the rest of his family. Jim would do anything for anybody at the drop of a hat. His two passions when he wasn’t working or staying

busy were hunting and fishing. He sincerely loved all of his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. A day after a Zoom interview for the job of Adams 14 superintendent, one of the candidates bowed out. “After much thought and deliberation with myself and my family, I feel this the best decision for us at this time,” Stephen Linkous said in a statement, according to chalkbeat. org. “I apologize for the timing of this decision. I would sincerely like to thank your organization and the board of education for your understanding.” After an hour of a Zoom visit with the then-two finalists for the job as Adams 14 superintendent, one thing was clear. Communication within the community is important to both Linkous and Karla Loria. Linkous is the chief of staff for the Kansas City Public Schools.
