The Weld Re-8 Board of Education would love to see in-person graduation for Fort Lupton High School Memorial Day weekend. FLHS officials are making plans to do just that. But the question before the board is how many people will be able to attend, thanks to potential coronavirus concerns. During an April 22 discussion, Superintendent Alan Kaylor thought those who wanted to attend commencement could. Present guidance from local health departments caps the attendance to four tickets per graduate. Kaylor translated that to between 650 and 700 people in the audience. Board member Cody LeBlanc, who doesn’t want any restrictions, said if an attendance cap is in place, it should be for the first 700 people who showed up to the ceremony. His fellow board member, Michele Bettger, disagreed. “I would ask you this as a board. You sit on stage. It doesn’t feel like there are more than 750 people there. I don’t know. We’ve never had to monitor who comes in,” Kaylor said. “It sounds like a lot when you’re talking about that number. We’ll Livestream it. Several candidates in Thornton and Westminster have thrown their names in the hat and it won’t be for another few months until people can circulate nomination petitions. For those interested in running for city council, there is still time. In Westminster, there is an election for mayor and three at-large council seats. Thornton and Northglenn have four council seats up for election, one for each ward. In Commerce City, there will be elections for two at-large council seats, one seat for Ward 1 and one seat for Ward 3. Anyone interested in running has to file a candidate affidavit with the city clerk’s office within 10 days of announcing their candidacy. Lowell was born August 1, 1928 to Richard and Irene Schuyler in Fort Lupton, Colorado. They lived a few years at the west end of Fort Lupton and then moved to Cemetery Lane. He graduated from Fort Lupton High School in 1948.

morning coffee. He and his wife enjoyed trips with the Brighton Senior Center. They also served the center as volunteers. They enjoyed many trips with the Pioneer Club of Public Service. For eight years, they wintered in Mesa, Arizona.

After school, he worked for Fort Lupton Electric and then Colorado Central Power Company. Public Service Company bought Colorado Central Power and Lowell worked there for 35 years.

He volunteered as a crossing guard for Adams 27J in assistance of his grandchildren. He and Ellen attended most of the sports activities of their grandchildren, serving as a vital part of their lives.

He married Ellen May Gilman in Platteville, Colorado on June 1, 1952. They gave birth to Timothy Lee (1954), Deborah May (1956), and Cynthia Lynn (1957). Cindy preceded her father in death in December of 1959. Ellen and Lowell were married for 68 years.

Lowell persevered through many health issues. They participated in the Relay for Life organization for cancer survivors for many years.

Lowell belonged to the First Baptist Church of Fort Lupton, Village Baptist Church of Thornton, and Crossroads Baptist Church of Northglenn before attending Chapel Hill Church of the Nazarene with their son, Tim. With his brother, his cousin, and his father, he sang in a men´s quartet at Fort Lupton Baptist Church. In service to his creator, Lowell served as a deacon, a janitor, a building committee member, and a choir member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and woodworking. He was a member of the Fort Lupton Lions Club, often holding office. After retirement, he enjoyed meeting with friends for

FLHS sets out graduation plan for 2021 BY STAFF REPORTS

Fort Lupton High School is planning in-person graduation at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the school. Plans are also in the works for several other events in the run-up to commencement. Here’s a list: The all-school awards assembly breakfast starts at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, in the gym. That’s when all the classroom and honor cords will be handed out. The school plans to record those assemblies for parents to view on the school’s website or on Facebook. The last day of school for seniors is Friday, May 21. Students need to

attend all of their classes to check in material; it’s also the last day for seniors to hand in their work. Those who are taking Edgenuity courses have to finish the coursework and pay for the coursework by 4 p.m. May 21. Seniors interested in participating in the senior breakfast and capping ceremony have to submit the form and buy tickets by May 21. The school provides breakfast for each senior who reserves a place; guests have to pay $12 per ticket. Each senior can buy three additional breakfast tickets. The school has to split the breakfast because of health and safety guidelines. Seniors whose

last names start with A-L start at 8 a.m. May 25; the balance of the class begins at 10 a.m. Each session lasts 90 minutes. Student speakers have to turn in their speeches to Debra Smith by 10 a.m. May 21 by email. Those who plan to speak at graduation (opening invocation, the welcoming, closing benediction or crossing of the tassel) have to turn in their speeches by 10 a.m. May 21. Graduation practice will start shortly after noon May 25 at Bob Felps Field. In case of bad weather, the rehearsal takes place inside the gym. Senior Scholarship Night is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26. Students

should submit scholarship awards to the counseling office. It’s a ticketed event; RSVPs for seniors are required. The walk of fame and senior barbecue starts at noon Thursday, May 27. Graduation begins at 9 a.m. May 29; seniors should show up at the high-school commons no later than 8:15 a.m. Parents need to stay behind the roped areas to take pictures. It’s a ticketed event. Officer-involved shooting kills one An officer-involved shooting left one man dead near Fort Lupton on April 17. It happened in the Aristocrat Ranchettes subdivision, which is northeast of town, around 8:45 a.m. The Weld County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 60-year-old Smoky Lynn Crockett, who lives in

Speak Week continues The Brighton Youth Commission will be hosting a series of events for SPEAK (Suicide, Prevention, Education, Awareness and Knowledge) Week the rest of this week. The goal of SPEAK Week is to raise awareness about the prevalence of teen suicide and to educate the community on mental health issues and the stigmas surrounding them, according to a press statement. Some of the events are virtual and socially distanced events and include a WPEAK Week walk Saturday, May 1. Virtual activities include outdoor art and other activities. The walk will take place at Carmichael Park in half-hour waves from 1 - 4 p.m. Facial coverings will be required and any other COVID-19 health and safety guidelines at the time will apply. Young entrepreneur program The Youth Services’ Growing Grads Program starts its new Young Entrepreneur Program in June. The workshops will be virtual and will consist of a series of hourlong classes that will teach and empower youth how to build their own business. It’s for young adults ages 19. After the workshops, participants will be eligible to sell their products on an online marketplace. Interested buyers will then be able to purchase directly from the seller. “This is a class for young adults in Brighton who are passionate about entrepreneurship or just simply want to learn more,” said Tawnya Russell, manager of Brighton Youth Services. “We hear of so many great business ideas among youth in our community, so we hope we can help guide those young entrepreneurs through this program.” Deadline to apply is April 7.
