School board adopts U.S. 250th, Black History Month resolutions

Trustees approve campus donations, new

and $110,000 replacement of PRHS’s ‘Hula Hut’

PASO ROBLES — It was a light meeting for trustees at the Tuesday, Feb. 10, Paso Robles Joint Unified School District meeting. With trustees Nathan Williams and Joel Peterson absent, board approved campus donations, new textbooks, and $110,000 replacement of the PRHS “Hula Hut.”

Trustees approved a new resolution that declared the district’s commitment to celebrating America’s 250th anniversary on July 4, by promoting education on the nation’s founding principles of liberty, self-governance, natural law, and the rule of law as outlined in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of teaching students about the sacrifices and struggles that shaped the country, honoring veterans and fallen heroes, and fostering patriotism and civic understanding.

Also approved was a resolution formally recognizing February as Black History Month in the district. The resolution acknowledges the origins

End of an Era on Main Street: Templeton Feed and Grain Cement Building Demolished

Jermin family takes first step toward rebuilding after July 4 fire, clearing way for return to downtown Templeton

TEMPLETON — On Monday, Feb. 9, the Jermin family watched as crew members from ABI Engineering demoed the remainder of the Templeton Feed and Grain on Main Street. The demolition of what remained of the cement building marks the

first step in moving the family’s business back onto Main Street. The final demolition comes just over six months after a July 4th fire erupted and consumed the granary. What was left

behind was nothing but rubble and partial structure to the original cement building. The building has served many lives during its time on Main Street. One of which was a grocery store, and then turning into a

Sweetheart dances sell out as families celebrate

2nd Annual Mother-Son and 21st Annual Father-Daughter events bring families together for two nights of tradition

ATASCADERO — The Pavilion on the Lake was filled with laughter, music, and unforgettable moments as families gathered for two of Atascadero’s most beloved annual traditions: the 2nd Annual Mother–Son

Sweetheart Dance and the 21st Annual Father–Daughter Sweetheart Dance.

Hosted by the City of Atascadero, both semi-formal events embraced this year’s theme, “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You!” Couples danced the night away under the stars to music from DJ Manny Medina, enjoyed snacks and door prizes, and captured memories with professional photographer Jimmy De. Tickets for the event went quickly, selling out ahead of time.

According to Recreation Coordina-

tor Ashley Zamora, both events were completely sold out over their two-night runs.

The Mother–Son Sweetheart Dance, held Jan. 30 and 31, marked its second year and saw a key addition: a second night. Zamora said the expansion helped spread out age groups and created a more relaxed atmosphere.

“It was just as great,” Zamora said of the event compared to its inaugural year. “It seemed much more mellow with adding

feed store in the 1940s when Rick Jermin’s grandfather, Tom Jermin Sr., bought the property, and later adding the feed mill and granary that towered over Main Street for generations.

By about 11:30 a.m., the

roof had been removed, and crews shifted their focus to the north side of the structure. As heavy equipment pulled away at the walls, decades-old materials gave way with surprising ease. Rick walked Paso Robles Press through the site, pointing out cracks in the foundation and areas where it had become uneven, not only from over time but mainly from the destruction of the fire. The building’s thick walls, constructed of riverbed rock cement, crumbled almost instantly once disturbed — collapsing more like sand than

solid masonry. Built in 1912 — the same year the Titanic’s maiden voyage — the building had stood for more than a century. For Rick and his family, its demolition marked the end of an era. He grew up around the structure, and generations of his family built their lives and livelihoods there. Watching it fall was surreal and undeniably emotional. Yet alongside the sadness was a sense of relief. The deteriorating building had become a liability, and its removal clears the way for the next phase of the property’s redevelopment.

There was no large crowd gathered for the demolition, though passing motorists slowed to watch and record video. A few members of the fire department were present, along with

of the observance, beginning with Carter G. Woodson’s establishment of Negro History Week in 1926 and its expansion into a month-long celebration during the Civil Rights Movement.

the ABI crew overseeing the work. Crews will continue demolishing the remaining structures, leveling and grading the site in preparation for what comes next.

At the end of January, the Jermin family met with Paso Robles Press to talk about what the future looks like for them.

Since the feed and grain was destroyed during the July 4th fire the family has been working to get approval for several permits through both the county and the state. They recently received the final approval to continue with demolition, which will allow them to take the next step into rebuilding.

“We know this will be hard for the community to see,” Stacey Jermin said. “That’s why we wanted to share what’s happening and be transparent about the plan — so everyone understands why it needed to come down.”

Originally, the family thought they would

Buffalo Soldiers to the nation’s first Black president and vice president, and notes that while Black history is part of the core curriculum year-round, February provides an opportunity to further emphasize stories that may previously have been overlooked.

Later in the meeting, some donations were approved.

The Wonderful Company donated $500 to support Paso Robles High School through

CyberGrants. Also, through CyberGrants, The Wonderful Company donated $1,000 to support Pat Butler Elementary School.

Trustees then unanimously approved some textbooks for the 2026-27 school year for Infant and Toddler Care, Advanced Placement Literature, and Cosmetology 1. The three textbooks were brought to trustees as an information item at the Jan. 10 board meet-

be able to keep the building. Unfortunately, due to years of natural wear and tear, along with damage from putting out the July 4th fire, its not feasible for the family to simply just repair the building or keep the facade and build around it.

“It’s a hard reality that this is the route that has to be taken,” Rick said, “but being able to make this step is a positive move forward in our journey to getting back onto Main Street.”

As a result, the building was torn down on Monday, Feb. 9 and the empty space is being prepared for a new building that plans to look as much like the original building as possible. While timelines remain fluid, the family hopes to begin the rebuilding within the next few months after the final demolition is complete.

While the loss of the 114-year-old building is significant, the family has come to terms with the necessity of its removal. With the

ing. According to staff, all of the textbooks were on display at the Paso Robles High School and the Paso Robles District Office from Jan. 14 through Feb. 6 and no feeback was received from the community. The textbooks will use $25,000 of CTE funds for two of the CTE courses and $12,000 from the General Fund for AP Literature textbooks.

Lastly, trustees unanimously approved replacing the “Hula

the additional night to help spread out the age groups.”

Families responded positively to the change.

“They all seemed to have a great time and appreciated that we added the extra night,” Zamora shared.

Just one week later, on Feb. 6 and 7, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other special guests escorted their daughters to the 21st Annual Father–Daughter Sweetheart Dance. Zamora noted that this year’s dance was “just as successful as it was the years past.”

While the Father–Daughter Dance has grown into a decades-long tradition — with some families attending every year — Zamora emphasized that the heart of both events remains the same.

“It’s a wonderful community event,” she shares. “Everyone seems to have the best time making memories with their little ones. We have a handful of families that have attended every dance.”

The dances would not be possible without community support. The Father–Daughter event was presented by Guest House Grill, with gold sponsor MGP Coatings and numerous in-kind sponsors including Five Star Rain Gutter, Bloom & Grow, Lonely Oak Arts, ColorCraft, Jimmy

Adventist Health unifies local imaging centers under one name

Adventist Health has unified its outpatient imaging services under a single, trusted name: Adventist Health Imaging. Templeton Imaging and Selma Carlson Diagnostic Center are now operating as Adventist Health Imaging, a change aimed at improving access, communication, and the overall patient experience.

The rebranding follows several months of operational improvements designed to streamline care for patients and referring providers. Enhancements include upgraded phone systems to reduce wait times and improve scheduling, expanded insurance acceptance covering all major plans except CCPN, and workflow improvements from scheduling through delivery of results.

Adventist Health officials say the updates reflect the organization’s ongoing commitment to patient-centered care and service excellence while providing a more consistent experience across imaging locations.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house were held Jan. 27 at the Templeton location. A similar ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo location, 77 Casa St., Suite 102.

Paso Robles earns improved ISO fire protection rating

The City of Paso Robles has achieved a Class 2 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), an upgrade from its previous Class 3 rating, reflecting significant investments in fire protection and public safety.

“Out of more than 37,000 fire departments nationwide, only 2,109 have achieved a Class 2 ISO rating,” said Fire Chief Jonathan Stornetta. “This milestone highlights the strength of Paso Robles’ fire protection system and the vital role of a community that consistently supports investments in public safety and emergency preparedness.”

ISO’s Public Protection Classification (PPC) program helps insurers determine coverage and premiums for personal and commercial property. An improved ISO rating can lead to better insurance availability and potential cost savings for residents and businesses.

The upgrade comes after Measure J-20 funding strengthened the city’s fire services, including increased staffing, construction of Fire Station 3, development of a Regional Fire Training Center, and upgrades to emergency dispatch operations. Paso Robles’ Water Division also contributed by maintaining consistent fire flows through more than 3,000 hydrants citywide.

NEWS BRIEFS

The city thanked the community, City Council, and multiple departments for their collaboration, as well as Congressman Jimmy Panetta for securing a $500,000 federal grant to support the Regional Fire Training Center.

Beloved Lion Water Fountain returns to Central Coast Zoo for Valentine’s event

A longtime favorite of local families has returned to the Central Coast Zoo just in time for Valentine’s Day. The City of Atascadero and the Central Coast Zoo announced the reopening of the children’s Lion Water Fountain, known as “Leo the Lion,” following a recent refurbishment.

The fountain will be unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, marking the launch of the zoo’s new Valentine’s-themed event, Woo at the Zoo. The celebration will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature themed activities, animal enrichment, and special keeper talks focused on how animals choose their mates.

For generations, the Lion Water Fountain has been a familiar gathering spot and photo backdrop for zoo visitors. Zoo officials say its return reconnects the community with a treasured piece of the zoo’s history.

To celebrate the reopening, the zoo is hosting a social media photo promotion inviting community members to share photos of themselves, their children, or grandchildren with the Lion Fountain — past or present — for a chance to win a Valentine-themed prize. Entries will be accepted online and in person until 11 a.m. Feb. 14, with a winner announced later that day.

“This fountain holds a special place in the hearts of our community,” said Zoo Director Dr. Cynthia Stringfield. “Its return honors the memories generations have shared here, and we sincerely thank the Lions Clubs of San Miguel and Templeton and H&R Block of SLO County for supporting this important restoration.”

All Woo at the Zoo activities and the ribbon cutting are included with general admission and are free for Zoo members.

The Central Coast Zoo is located at Atascadero Lake Park, just west of Highway 101 at Highway 41/Morro Road.

‘Bachelor Pet’ adoption event returns to Woods Humane Society Woods Humane Society is bringing back its popular Bachelor Pet adoption event just in time for Valentine’s Day, offering reduced adoption fees for adult dogs and cats from Feb. 11–15.

During the five-day event, adoption fees for adult pets will be lowered to $14, plus applicable dog license fees, a significant reduction from standard adoption costs that typically range from $65 for senior cats to $150 for adult dogs. The event is designed to spotlight adult animals waiting for homes and encourage community members to find a new companion this Valentine’s season.

Inspired by reality dating shows, Bachelor Pet highlights adoptable dogs and cats as “contestants” looking for their perfect match. Woods Humane Society CEO Emily L’Heureux said the event combines fun with purpose by helping reduce barriers to adoption while showcasing animals eager to provide companionship and unconditional love.

Woods currently has about 55 adult pets available for adoption, ranging in age from 5 months to 10 years and representing a wide variety of breeds. All adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, licensed, and treated for parasites. Adoptions also include a complimentary wellness exam at a local veterinary clinic and 30 days of voluntary pet insurance.

Man convicted in gang-related murder and separate knife assault

A San Luis Obispo County jury has convicted Angel Ramosramirez, 31, of the 2022 gang-related murder of a 20-year-old Oceano man and, in a separate bench trial, a 2021 knife assault on a teenager, District Attorney Dan Dow announced.

On Sept. 9, 2025, a jury found Ramosramirez guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Daniel Diaz, who was stabbed 10 times during the early morning hours of June 4, 2022, on a street in Oceano. Jurors also found true allegations that the killing was committed for the benefit of the West Park criminal street gang and that Ramosramirez used a knife in the attack.

The West Park gang operates primarily in Santa Maria.

Following the verdict, Superior Court Judge Jesse J. Marino found true that Ramosramirez had a prior 2016 Santa Barbara County conviction for making criminal threats for the benefit of the same gang, qualifying as a strike under California’s Three Strikes Law.

In a separate case, Judge Marino on Jan. 29, 2026, found Ramosramirez guilty of assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a Sept. 4, 2021, stabbing at a party in Nipomo. Ramosramirez waived his right to a jury trial in that case. The judge found that Ramosramirez stabbed a teenager in the chest, used a knife, and personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim.

Although both cases were charged together, the court ordered separate trials to protect the defendant’s due process rights, with the murder case tried first.

“We will aggressively prosecute violent crime in our community.  Particularly violent gang crime, which far too often targets our disadvantaged population,” Dow said. “We remain committed to working closely with our local and regional law enforcement partners to guarantee successful prosecutions and appropriate sentences in cases of gang violence.”

Sentencing for both convictions is scheduled for April 28 in Department 10 of San Luis Obispo County Superior Court. Ramosramirez faces a maximum sentence of 41 years to life in state prison.
