Now with Fluency Levels 11–15 for pupils in Year 4 and above
Little Wandle Fluency is for children who have completed Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised or another systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme and are secure at reading that programme’s final level of books.
Little Wandle’s ‘by schools for schools’ approach means that teachers have been integral to the development of Little Wandle Fluency.
Little Wandle Fluency aims for children to become readers who can read with prosody and understanding. It supports them to lift meaning from the text, build their identity as a reader and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Little Wandle Fluency teaches all aspects of reading using vibrant, diverse and engaging chapter books created by contemporary authors and illustrators. Each book has been carefully devised to support children to become confident, fluent and motivated readers as they move through Years 2, 3, 4 and beyond.
“Looking at the children's reading skills and how they are using expression, rhythm and pace has been really useful. Amazing.”
Burley and Woodhead Primary School, West Yorkshire
The importance of reading fluency
The DfE Reading framework identifies the importance of explicitly teaching fluency to ensure that children are reading with accuracy, automaticity, understanding and expression. Children should practise reading with a wide range of books.
Research shows that students who develop strong reading fluency in their early years are more likely to excel in school and maintain higher levels of confidence and wellbeing. Reading fluently also improves children’s comprehension, vocabulary, empathy and critical thinking skills.
Fluency Levels
The programme consists of 15 Fluency Levels for children to work their way through, with chapter books ranging from 80 pages (Levels 1 to 5) to 112 pages (Levels 11 to 15). Each book contains six chapters of equal length, designed so that every chapter takes 10 minutes to read aloud. As children progress, the language becomes more sophisticated, and the word count increases, requiring a gradual improvement in reading speed from 60 to 150 words per minute.
Just as the celebration was in full swing, Bo heard a different sound – angry voices. She turned around to see several scowling adults marching towards them. At the front was Mr Scratton. “What on earth is all this?!” he boomed.
Bo gulped. “We’re ... we’re saving water!” she explained, her voice trembling. “For the plants in the square … to win the award.”
Fuming, Mr Scratton replied, “In case you hadn’t noticed, the whole town is now covered in piles of dirt, trails of grit and sludgy footprints. You’ve made things worse, not better!”
Saturday morning
Dear Diary,
The royal family asked if I had any experience with large gardens and old buildings. I told them that I had grown enchanted forests near castles before. They were very pleased and wanted to know more, but I said that was a secret.
I’m no blabbermouth.
I am very professional like that.
It’s so wonderful to be out in the fresh air once again, feeling the wind in my cobwebs. I have so many ideas to make their inferior garden truly magical. Even better than the gardens I bewitched for Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
Bo clambered up onto the edge of the tub and pumped her fist in the air. “We did it!” she cried, proudly.

Megalania were scaly reptiles, but the most famous creatures from this time are probably the woolly mammoth and the woolly rhino. We call them woolly, but they didn’t actually have wool – they were furry!
They needed this thick fur to keep them warm, because they lived in northern areas, in an era when the weather was cold.

Looking after a pet hamster
Hamsters can be a good first pet – they’re small and quite easy to care for. Because they are nocturnal, they sleep in the day when you’re at school, and they’re active at night.
A hamster home
Choose a cage with plenty of space and a lockable door. A cage with different levels is good.
You could add a wheel for the hamster to run on.
Put in some toys like wooden blocks and old toilet roll tubes for it to play with.
Keeping your hamster cosy Put a thick layer of bedding material in the bottom of the cage. A box with shredded paper or cardboard makes a nice spot to nest in!
Give children exclusive insight into the authors and illustrators behind the books with Q&A style interviews
About the author
Why did you want to be an author?
At primary school, my teacher
Mr Smith read our class
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien and that got me hooked on reading.
It wasn’t long before I decided I wanted to write stories myself.
Why did you decide to write this book?
Years ago on a school visit I met a boy whose hamster had died that morning! He said his parents were taking him to buy a new hamster that evening, and that he was going to call it
Henry the Eighth. That stuck in my mind, and this story is the result …
What do you hope readers will get out of the book?
Simple – an insight into the world of hamsters, some idea of what having a pet involves – and lots of fun!
Tony Bradman
“Our children are loving the Fluency books. The design of the books and how text is broken up is great. There’s not a whole scary page of text! The size and font support children and the illustrations are enticing. All in all, we are very happy. The children are so enthusiastic about the fact they can read the books!”

However, the Fluency 11–15 books feature more pages (112), higher word counts and more complex language. Readers are also introduced to different text types including poetry, graphic novels and hybrid genres.
They put the box into the sack. It weighed a lot now, so they carried it between them.
“If anyone asks, it’s just lots of old tins and bottle-tops,” said Peggy.
But the only interruption to their journey was a red motorcar that drove over the railway bridge so fast it had to skid to a halt to avoid hitting them.
“A Triumph Roadster!” squawked Jed, as he cannoned into the bridge wall.
“Look out, you idiots!” shouted the driver who wore a silk scarf and a boater hat. “What on earth are you doing?!”
In the back seat, a brown-haired boy around Bill’s age stared at them with a smirk.

Mary sighed. It wasn’t the same as acting on the stage. It was so unfair that girls were not allowed to perform.
“Mary!” Mother’s voice was louder now. It was enough to rouse Bessie to throw back the cover.
“Best we make speed. Master Shakespeare might hear Mother’s roar and think she is a lion in his play!” said Bessie.
Mary giggled. She pulled herself out of bed, tied on her apron and made her way downstairs.

The impact of Little Wandle Fluency
Wandle Learning Trust recently carried out a fluency impact study with primary schools in Ipswich. Each school was asked to baseline the children at the start of the project using a specific piece of text from the Little Wandle Fluency programme. Each school then re-assessed the same children using the same piece of text at the end of the project. All 10 schools reported an increase in the average number of words per minute (wpm) and an increase in the average accuracy level.
“Year 3 child has made substantial progress from a baseline of 65wpm to now reading 110wpm. He thoroughly enjoys the books and this is helping him in other areas of the curriculum as he is now able to keep up with the pace of work in lessons.” Clifford Road Primary School
“It has had a huge impact across the school in terms of progress but also in terms of promoting the love of reading. The children are far more engaged in the texts than previous schemes and are incredibly eager to read the next chapter as well as sharing their books with their adults at home… When children are reading aloud, they are becoming much more expressive and understand how to use prosody effectively to convey meaning. When reassessing some of the children, I could see a huge difference from last June to now… I cannot believe the progress the children have made in such a short space of time and I’m excited to see this continue throughout the year groups over the next few years.”
Ravenswood Community Primary School
“Child X’s baseline was 38wpm and 74% accuracy. She had completed our phonics programme so she began Fluency lessons at the start of year 3. She recently scored 79wpm and 94% accuracy. She enjoys the stories and so has wanted to read them. Previously she would mutter, skip words and pretend she had read a page. Now she reads with pride.”
Morland C of E Primary School
