An all-in-one phonics intervention and assessment programme.
Working with FFT, Little Wandle has developed a complete Lower Secondary assessment and intervention programme to systematically improve students’ decoding, fluency and comprehension skills.
To support the Little Wandle Code programme, Collins has created fully decodable anthologies that are aligned to the programme progression and have been designed to appeal to students in Year 7 and beyond.
Student workbooks
Students progress through the workbooks in the intervention sessions to secure their phonic knowledge through consistent and carefully designed activities.
The student workbooks are designed to be used alongside the downloadable intervention units included within the Little Wandle Code subscription.

Decodable anthologies
Collins has created 10 age-appropriate, decodable anthologies that are exactly matched to the teaching units and systematic progression in Little Wandle Code.
Designed to look like the books their peers are reading, the anthologies include:
• a variety of content: fiction and non-fiction, featuring a wide range of text types, genres, and well-known authors
• levelled practice: stories with varied word counts, length and complexity to provide sufficient practice and choice
• appealing visuals: a range of illustration and photographic styles to motivate and engage Secondary readers
• an introduction page in the Start and Grow anthologies to set out the focus graphemes, tricky words, blurb, and a discussion question to engage students before they read the story.
The Black Shuck

people someone where anyone
The Black Shuck is a non-fiction text in the form of a witness report.
Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog that roams the English coasts and countryside of East Anglia, is considered to be a folktale by many people. There are stories of sightings of Black Shuck going back more than a thousand years! But the most discussed sighting of this enormous black dog was in 1577, when it attacked a group of villagers who ran into a church for shelter from a storm in Bungay, Suffolk. In this witness account, you will hear how the unsuspecting villagers attempted to flee from a terrifying attack by Black Shuck.
Vocabulary:
● discussed: talked about
● shelter: a place that provides cover (e.g. from bad weather)
● witness: someone who was there when an event happened
● unsuspecting: not aware of any danger
● attempted: tried

The world of basketball
The first thing you should know is that I’m not an expert at basketball. But like billions of other people worldwide, I’m obsessed with this sport.
Basketball’s more than just hurling a ball through a hoop. It’s art. It’s storytelling. It’s life!

It is a moonlit night in the summer of 1577. A sudden thunderstorm has made people run into a church for shelter. As they wait for the storm to end, something chilling happens …
A big black dog bursts into the church and attacks!
Many people have discussed what happened that night. This is the record of a witness who was there.

Basketball and me
School life was harsh for a tall, nerdy kid like me. But one day, a basketball coach joined the staff. He was the first person to tell me that being nearly six foot tall at 12 years old could be an advantage.
“Try basketball!” he urged.
