I am pleased to transmit the 15th installment of the Community Building Leadership Team’s (CBLT’s) Strategic Performance Report (SPR).
AIRPORT AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS & GRANTS, ETC. As a follow up to the January 24, 2024, State Delegation discussion, Senator John Albers (56th), Chair of the Health & Human Services Committee invited all the Fire chiefs within south Fulton to attend a Senate Committee Hearing (only) at the State Capitol on February 12th to discuss Senate Bill 16 (EMS Reform).
This was an introduction to amend the Bill which allowed the public to offer their comments either in support or opposition of the Bill. Additionally, this Bill to be entitled an Act is to amend Chapter 11 of Title 31 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to emergency medical services, so as to amend provisions relative to the Emergency Medical Systems Communications Program administered by the Department of Public Health; to provide for legislative findings, determinations, and declarations; to authorize local entities to establish boundaries for the provision of emergency medical services; to provide for definitions; to provide for a short title; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes. Our College Park Fire Chiefs were among those from Roswell, Riverdale, Sandy Springs, Rockdale County, Chattahoochee Hills, etc. to speak in favor of the Bill. Additionally, Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) spoke on behalf of its organization and Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), in favor of the Bill. Several private ambulance service providers spoke out in opposition of this Bill. In order to move forward, the Bill must be voted out of Committee to the House Rules calendar and then voted on to determine whether it will be heard on the State Senate floor. If approved, the House of Representatives would need to approve it. Information is forthcoming on the status by March 2024.
CITY CLERKS UPDATES Requests have been made from several of the constituents of the City of College Park for a tool to follow up on Public Comments/Citizen Remarks that are made at City Council Meetings. The team has implemented a tab on the city’s website where follow up to public comments can be found. You can also access public comments follow up by going to www.collegeparkga.com, click on COMMUNITY in the top green border, and scroll down to Public Comment. Additionally, a request was also made to add an After Hours Emergency Contacts tab to the city’s website to provide easily accessible contact information for residents who made need assistance that is outside of the normal business hours of the city. The College Park Youth Council (CPYC) attended the Georgia Municipal Association Youth Forum that was held from February 2-4, 2024, at the GMA headquarters. CPYC is actively participating in local youth initiatives. Members in attendance were Cedrick Lemons, Braden Jones and Donovan Jones. Additionally, one of our CPYC members was recognized at the College Park Black History Program receiving the Youth Award. CPYC members Cedrick Lemons and Pacha LaPlanche were also in attendance at the Black History Program as usher.
CONVENTION CENTER & GOLF COURSE ENTERPRISE
SALES AND MARKETING SITES AND BOOKINGS January was quite active athletically and academically we kicked off a strong weekend with Newbreed Promotions and United Futsal in our Exhibit Halls. Both bring a new twist to familiar sports. Newbreed promotes a different type of wrestling, and United Futsal, a different version of indoor soccer. The following weekend we hosted American Grappling another atypical sporting event. Generational Wealth came back for their 2nd annual Multifamily Movement. Chick-fil-A DTT hosted their annual meeting for CFA’s Technology Department. The GICC also welcomed the National Association for College Admission Counseling for their annual College fair. Over 150 Colleges and Universities participated in this event. Freddie the Falcon also attended the event. GICC finished the month of January with Atlanta Centennial (Gymnastics) and Varsity Spirit (cheerleading) in the . Exhibit Halls.
HISTORIC COLLEGE PARK GOLF COURSE GOLF COURSE As January concluded, the golf course saw temperatures below freezing, forcing us to close for a several days. We also covered the greens. As a result of the downtime, we were able to paint the men's and women's restrooms and start remodeling the clubhouse. The upcoming week's weather should be more favorable than it was previously. The grounds crew were able to start putting sod in the clubhouse's front entry thanks to the current weather. Our guests will have a more pleasant experience based on the improvements. The well needed clubhouse makeover began with much anticipation of the end results. Before and after renovations are impressive.
FIRE RESCUE FIRE RESCUE RECOGNIZED BY CONGRESSWOMAN NIKEMA WILLIAMS Congresswoman Nikema Williams’ office delivered gift baskets and extended a heartfelt THANK YOU to our firefighters for always being there. College Park Fire Rescue’s dedication is the true heartbeat of our community. Our fire department also presented a token of our appreciation (gift bag) to her office.
FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONSE STATISTICS AND ACTIVITIES
PARKS, RECREATION, AND CULTURAL ARTS Celebrating Black History Month in College Park The annual Black History Program with the Swearing in Ceremony was held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Gateway Arena. The theme for this year’s event was Trailblazing in Modern Times. This year’s event featured the swearing in of the newly elected officials to include Mayor Bianca Motley Broom and Ward I, Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie, and Ward 2, Councilwoman Tracie Arnold who made history for College Park with the majority woman governing body. Each were honored during the event to include Mayor Bianca Motley Broom receiving the Merit Award with Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie and Councilwoman Tracie Arnold receiving the Shining Star Award. .
Musical performance featured the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia Metropolitan Atlanta Orchestra, founded in 1990.
The Keynote Speaker for the event was Lt. Rex “RJ” Willis, Jr. Lt. Rex Willis Jr., Shining Star Award Honoree, currently serves on active duty, forging new paths pursuing his Master’s in Business School with the prestigious Untied State navy FLEET Scholarship.
The Black History Program with the Swearing in Ceremony had over 400 people in attendance.
POLICE DEPARTMENT BACKGROUND AND RECRUITMENT
In our continued efforts to recruit eligible candidates for the police department and assisting them through the hiring process. Background and Recruitment investigators held a physical agility test on February 15, 2024. There were ten (10) potential candidates, two (2) of which were certified Georgia Police Officers traveled from near and far gathered to showcase their agility and strive toward the noble goal of joining the College Park Police Department. It was a true display of grit, passion, and commitment to serving the community.
CLAYTON COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT ORGANIZATION (CCLEO)
Chief Rogers held the Clayton County Law Enforcement Organization (CCLEO) Quarterly Meeting at the Georgia International Convention Center on February 1, 2024. CCLEO is made up of all law enforcement agencies within Clayton County, GA. Chiefs or Department Representatives meet quarterly to discuss all law enforcement issues or concerns within the county and examine the best avenue to address those topics. COLLEGE PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT 16TH ANNUAL SENIOR’S VALENTINE’S SOCIAL
The College Park Police Department Annual Senior Valentine’s Social give opportunities for positive interactions with our senior community and help to build relationships. These connections and relations have grown into friendships. At this event, we acknowledge the role and significance our seniors have in the community for they are true pioneers. We honor and respect the great work that they have done and continue to do. With this small gesture of appreciation, we express our gratitude to our seniors for all your hard work, dedication, and commitment they have shown to this community.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT BUILDING AND GROUNDS Ward I, Ward II & Ward IV
The shifting season finds our team actively engaged in prepping, detailing, conducting clean-ups, mulching, and renewing our city landscape. We’re also in curb appeal restoration mode, diligently addressing the calls of both our elected officials and our citizens. To name a few, Ward IV, requested a little sprucing up of the Riverdale and Herschel Road location. Look at the beginning and finished project.
WATER AND SEWER The Water and Sewer crew addressed a significant water main break at the intersection of Lee Road and Temple Avenue. Once we successfully contained and stabilized the situation, our OnDemand contractor, Kemi Construction was tasked with installing two valves on a 12-foot main and inserting a plug in the 6-foot line connected to the 12-foot main.
