As the leaves begin to change and the crisp days of autumn arrive, there’s no better time to enjoy everything that makes Lethbridge such a vibrant and active community. Fall brings a renewed energy to our city. Students are back in classrooms, families are settling

into new routines, and community centres, sports fields, arenas, and cultural spaces are once

again filled with activity. From youth sports and recreation programs to arts, fitness, and lifelong learning opportunities, this season offers something for everyone. For hockey fans, the return of the Lethbridge Hurricanes signals the start of another exciting season of WHL action. It’s a great way to bring family and friends together throughout the fall and winter months. GO CANES GO!!! While life gets busier with school schedules, practices, lessons, and community events, I encourage everyone to make time to enjoy the season. Take a walk through our beautiful coulees, explore local parks and trails, attend a cultural performance, or try a new recreation program. These experiences help keep us active, connected, and engaged with our community. Thank you to the staff, volunteers, instructors, coaches, and community organizations who make recreation and culture opportunities possible throughout the year. Your dedication helps enrich the lives of residents of all ages. On behalf of Lethbridge City Council, I wish you a wonderful autumn season filled with fun, activity, and community spirit.

Nicholas Sheran Pool closure

Fall Swim Lessons

Nicholas Sheran Pool is closed until November 2026 following major upgrades, including a new HVAC system and annual maintenance. During the shutdown, all programs have been relocated to Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik Pool. Updated schedules will be posted at www.recex.ca/lethbridge.

Lessons will run from September 21 until November 28, 2026.

September 14 until December 19, 2026 Take your swimming and lifesaving skills to the next level with the Lethbridge Tidal Vipers Junior Lifeguard Club! Open to swimmers ages 8+, the Tidal Vipers offer both competitive and non-competitive streams, giving swimmers the opportunity to build lifesaving skills, fitness, teamwork, and confidence in a fun and challenging environment. Practices are: Mondays & Wednesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm and Saturdays, 11:00 am - 1:00 am.

SPARTANS BY RECEX SWIM CLUB September 15 until December 3, 2026 Spartans is designed for swimmers who are ready to build on the skills they have learned in swimming lessons and continue progressing in a fun, team-focused environment. Practices are on Tuesday & Thursday between ranging from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm based on the age group.

Canadian Swim Patrol: Includes Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol—an excellent introduction to lifeguard knowledge and skills. Advanced Courses at Stan Siwik: Whether you’re registering for the first time or recertifying, we’ve got you covered! Check out our advanced course page for more detials!

Womens Only Swim Friday, October X 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm at Stan Siwik Pool. The Women and Girls Only Swim program will provide a safe and designated space for Women and Girls who are unable to participate in traditional or mixed-gender activities because of culture, religion, beliefs, trauma,insecurities, etc. to swim without the presenceof men or boys. The first 35 attendees can swim for free, and after that, it’s only $4.00

saying “good enough!” The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities for all ages. As temperatures cool and outdoor swimming season comes to an end, Lethbridge residents are heading indoors to enjoy aquatic activities at Nicholas Sheran Pool, Stan Siwik Pool and Fritz Sick Pool. Whether you’re attending lessons, participating in fitness programs or enjoying a family swim, healthy swimming habits help ensure these facilities remain safe, clean and welcoming for everyone.

When contamination incidents occur, staff must follow strict Alberta Health protocols that can require extensive cleaning, water treatment and testing before a pool can safely reopen. Depending on the situation, closures can last for several hours or longer, affecting lessons, programs and public swim times. Contaminated water can contain:

The City of Lethbridge and Recreation Excellence work year-round to maintain high standards of water quality and safety through continuous filtration, testing, staff training and adherence to Alberta Health regulations. While staff play a vital role in keeping pools operating safely, preventing contamination incidents is a shared responsibility.

Program cancellation

• Registrations can be made online at lethbridge.ca/ swimming or by telephone/in-person Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Programs with insufficient registration are subject to cancellation. Customers will be notified as soon as a decision regarding cancellation has been made. All efforts will be made to accomodate any registrants displaced by cancellations. A full refund or credit to account will be issued for courses cancelled by Recreation Excellence.

• If registering by phone and no one answers please leave a message. • Participants may register in a maximum of two (2) classes/session.

Withdrawls

• Participants may waitlist in any class.

Preparing to Register Create an account prior to registration at lethbridge.ca/swimming. If you do not have an account you will need the following: • Name & birth date of account holder (Adult) • Name & birth date of participants • Home address, phone # and postal code • Program level, session time and alternatives if class is full

• Withdrawals received more than fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the lesson set or course will not be subject to a withdrawal fee. • Withdrawals made between five (5) and fourteen (14) days prior to the lesson start date will be subject to a 10% withdrawal fee. The remaining balance may be left on your account for future use or a refund may be requested. • Refunds of less than $5.00 will remain on the account.

• You may withdraw and re-register into another program without penalty prior to five (5) days before the lesson start date.

Fees

• No refunds will be given if withdrawal is within five (5) days of the lesson start date.

Power Jog

An unstructured swim that all guests may enjoy. The hot tub is available during this time. Note: Children under the age of 8 years and nonswimmers must be actively supervised within arm’s reach by a Parent/Guardian.

Power Jog is a high-intensity, loud, and fun way to exercise! Using various flotation devices is an effective way to get a full-body workout without the jarring impact of dry-land classes. No experience is necessary; however, the opportunities to work hard and have fun are endless.

Lane Swim Dedicated swim time for individuals looking to swim lengths of the pool in a structured setting of lane markers. Note: Participants must be 14 years of age or older. Participants 13 and under must be directly supervised by an adult.

Aqua Fit/Aqua Jog Aqua Fit is a shallow water fitness program. Aqua Jog is a deep-water Fitness program. Note: All participants must actively participate in the program. Participants must be 14 years of age and older. Participants 13 years and under must be directly supervised by an adult.

In 2026, the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 celebrates its 100th anniversary, marking a century of unbroken dedication to Southern Alberta’s veterans. The branch proudly bears the name of Brigadier-General John Smith Stewart, Lethbridge’s highest-ranking World War I soldier and a distinguished dentist, MLA, and MP. General Stewart famously commanded the historic victory parade in Mons, Belgium, on Armistice Day, embodying the true spirit of a "citizen soldier" devoted to his community and comrades.

Today, that legacy thrives at their unassuming, functional hub at 2019 4th Avenue South. Originally adapted from a modest 1970s commercial building to accommodate a booming postwar membership, the site is undergoing a major centennial revitalization. The upgrades feature a brand-new upstairs banquet hall designed for intimate community events, alongside beautifully preserved historic displays like the WWII Roll of Honour.

Combined with free memberships to anyone who wants to join, these upgrades will transform the building into one of Lethbridge's most accessible, multi-use community hubs.

Stay active outside this fall “There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing.” Dress for success and you can continue enjoying the great outdoors! Once fall weather arrives, many of us reduce our time outdoors. After a summer of sunshine and heat, it’s hard to embrace the cooler temperatures and wind, but with a little planning, outdoor activities can still be really enjoyable.

Breathable fabrics- Choose performance polyester blends, merino wool or fleece fabrics. Cotton breaths well but can hold moisture and give you a chill. Cover those ears - Headbands, buffs and toques improve comfort and they’re easy to stuff in a pocket. Hands and Feet - Bring along some gloves and consider warmer, moisture wicking socks. Waterproof (but breathable!) footwear can help too. Wet clothing greatly increases heat loss through conduction and evaporation so if you do get wet, head inside to get changed before you get chilled!

CURLING

Strategy, Skill, and a Language of Its Own Curling is one of Canada’s most recognizable sports. Most of us have seen the familiar sight of a player sliding stones down the ice while teammates sweep and call instructions; but there is much more happening than meets the eye. Played between two teams, curling combines precision, strategy, communication, and teamwork. Players take turns delivering stones toward the house, the circular target at the opposite end of the sheet. The goal is to finish each end with your team’s stones closer to the centre than your opponents.

Do You Speak Curling? Watch a curling game and you will quickly realize the sport has a language of its own. Here are a few terms that can help you follow the action:

House – The blue circular target area where stones must land to potentially score. Button – The red circle at the very centre of the house and the spot every team is trying to get closest to. Hammer – The advantage of delivering the final stone in an end, giving a team the last opportunity to change the score. Guard – A stone placed in front of the house to protect another stone or make it harder for an opponent to reach the target. Bonspiel – A curling tournament where teams come together to compete.

Those calls aren't just part of the atmosphere. Curlers are constantly communicating about the speed, direction, and movement of the stone. The player directing the shot may call for teammates to sweep harder, stop sweeping, or adjust based on how the stone is travelling. That constant communication is one of the reasons teamwork plays such an important role in curling.

There’s Strategy in Every Shot Curling is sometimes described as “chess on ice” because player are constantly thinking several shots ahead. Teams must decide when to protect their stones with guards, when to remove an opponent's stone, and where to place each shot to create an advantage later in the end. Strength can play a role, but precision, communication, decision-making, and strategy are what make the sport tick.

Curling in Lethbridge Clubs - Lethbridge Curling Club offers options for juniors, adults, and curlers aged 50+, with a variety of playing formats. Surrounded by open space, picnic tables, wildlife and more than 10 km of paved and gravel trails, this playground can easily become a full family adventure. Pack a lunch, explore the park and stay for the afternoon!

Play and Stay! Try a Wiggly Wildlife Scavenger Hunt! Spot a bird, animal track, interesting leaf, busy bug or something that makes you say “Wow!” Admire wildlife from a safe distance.

Pro Tip:

Plan for extra time! After the playground, take a family stroll along one of Pavan Park’s nearby trails. Seasonal washrooms are available during warmer months but are closed in winter.
