La 1nforuaoi6n contenida en el presente informa se basa ea zma encuesta trimestral realizada por el Negociado de Estadi.sticas del Trabajo. Durante los meses de enero, abril, julio 7 octubre, los investigadores de campo de este Ne. gociado efectuan entiºbvistas en una muestra, de viviendAs representativa de la poblaci$n dvil no institucional de Puerto Rico. Alrededor de 12,000 familias son entrevistadas trimestralmente.
The information contained in this rcIort is based on a quarterly survey conducted by the Bureau of Statistacs of the Department of Labor. Daring the months of Jauusry, April July and October, the field cnu.• aerators of this Bureau make innterviews in a sample of dwellings repro sentative of the civilian ncninstitutioal population of Puerto Rico, Approximately 12;000 households are interviewed each quarter.

Because only a sample of all households are studied each quarter, it is necessary to inflate the figures obtained from the survey in order to obtain estimates of employment and unemployment for the entire island. Therefore, the sample data is inflated to es iimmaatbas of the civilian noninstitntional population 14 years old and over, by age and sex groups prepared spared by the Bureau of Demographic Registry and Statistics of the of Health. These estimates are based on the age aid sex dic. trrbution of the population of Puerto Rico in April 1950, as determined by the United States Census of Population. Since that date, account has sC boon taken of the changes which have occurred due to: persons becoming 14 years óid, deaths emigration and outmigration, and net enrollment into the Armed. Forces.

The estimates here presented are affected by the chance variation of the sample•niéd. In general, the larger the number reported, the greater the reliability of the estimates. Because of this variRbfaty, too mach euphasis shod not be placed on small differences.
