The Father of the Tagalog Zarzuela

One of Reyes’ greatest contributions to Philippine culture was his development of the Tagalog zarzuela. Zarzuela is a Spanish form of musical theater that combines spoken dialogue, songs, and dances. Reyes adapted this European form and transformed it into something uniquely Filipino by writing zarzuelas in Tagalog and focusing on local themes and issues. His most famous zarzuela is “Walang Sugat” (No Wound), first staged in 1902. This play is set during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and tells the love story of Tenyong and Julia. Beyond romance, the play reflects patriotism, sacrifice, and the struggles of Filipinos under colonial rule. It cleverly blended entertainment with nationalistic messages. “Walang Sugat” became extremely popular and remains one of the most performed Filipino plays in history. It showed that theater could be both enjoyable and meaningful. Through this work and others, Reyes proved that the Tagalog language could be used in serious and artistic performances, not just in everyday conversation.

Another major achievement of Severino Reyes was the creation of Lola Basyang, a fictional grandmother known for telling imaginative and moral-filled stories to children. The character first appeared in 1925 in the magazine Liwayway, one of the most popular Filipino publications of the time. Lola Basyang became a cultural icon. Through her stories, Reyes introduced children to Filipino folklore, values, and life lessons. The stories were entertaining, magical, and easy to understand, making them popular among both young readers and adults.

Contribution to Filipino Identity

One of the most important aspects of Severino Reyes’ legacy is his contribution to Filipino identity. At a time when foreign powers controlled the country, Reyes showed pride in Filipino culture. By writing in Tagalog and highlighting Filipino values, he strengthened cultural confidence. He helped people see that their own language and traditions were worthy of art and respect. His zarzuelas brought communities together in theaters, where audiences laughed, cried, and reflected on shared experiences. His Lola Basyang stories became bedtime favorites for families, passing down lessons from one generation to another.

- voice from Philippine theater that time almost forgot.
