Smaller cruise ships that have been decked with the finest details allow guests to experience the world in luxury while only needing to unpack once.
Cruise ships are far more than a means of transportation. Getting from one point to another is the definition of travel, but when it comes to the open sea, the journey is as adventurous as the destination. Increasing in popularity are ships that have been crafted for a smaller number of guests. These vessels were not designed to appeal to the masses, but rather to encourage more authentic travel.
A Fleet to Remember
On opulent ships such as the Evrima — boasting the trusted Ritz-Carlton name — guests are offered the thrill of world travel with peace of mind and ease. Why separately book a safari or a private villa, a resort stay, or battle large crowds and long wait times, when you can comfortably have your cruise experience in one place against a backdrop of jaw-dropping views?
“When envisioning the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection we envisioned a customer cruising on its head,” says Jim Murren, executive chairman and CEO. “Our goal is to offer guests the intimacy and elegance found at The Ritz-Carlton resort or urban property, with access to unique tour experiences. This is a combination of both travelers can’t get enough of. He adds, “This balance caters to both those craving the comfort of familiar locales and the excitement of novel adventures.”
Windstar Cruises recognizes a similar sentiment. “We like to say that all cruises let you see the world, but only small ships like Windstar bring you close enough so you can experience it,” says the president of the company, Christopher Prelog. “This intimacy provides you with the luxury of time, space, and freedom to immerse yourself in both the journey and the destination.”
By 2025, The Ritz-Carlton fleet will include three impressive ships that have been designed to accommodate the most discerning travelers, while hosting less than 500 passengers. This will ensure a relaxed, personal experience. Evrima, the most compact ship — small but mighty — has a 298-guest
capacity, while the Ilma is slated to sail in September 2024 and Luminara is set to make its debut in July 2025.
AmaWaterways, another cruise company, specializes in river trips and boasts over 25 ships in its fleet. When set with a larger fleet, smaller ships are offered, such as the Zambezi Queen which is specifically designed for wildlife viewing in remote destinations for just 28 guests. With the right sustainable technology and intimate groups, travelers can enjoy a trip to Africa with virtually all of the comfort and amenities.
The AmaDahlia is a 72-passenger ship that sails the Nile River. On board are Egyptologists, who are trained to illuminate the history and stories that have shaped modern Egypt.
Also touting smaller ships, Windstar’s unique addition of sailing yachts also sets them apart. “Yes, Windstar Cruises has three sailing yachts alongside a suite of sailing yachts ranging from 148 to 342 guests.” He explains of their hybrid fleet.
“See, these ships have motorized sails and are actual sailing yachts; while these are also motor ships which boost speed and reliability. This balance means there are various ships to meet different needs, yet the experience is quite similar across
the fleet, and matched to personal preference. Some prefer the romance of sailing on our Wind Class options, while others prefer the larger suites and additional amenities offered on our Star Class yachts,” explains Prelog.
Pearl Seas Cruises is another company that is making travel to desired destinations even easier. With locales, such as the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay, and the St. Lawrence Seaway, which are difficult to navigate with larger ships, travelers are sure to experience something unique.
One ship in particular stands out, the Pearl Mist, which was recently redone. “They have elevated
Pearl Mist’s décor to the finest available in small ship cruising, masterfully blending the casual elegance and comfortable luxury our guests enjoy,” says Carter Robertson, president of Pearl Seas Cruises. Finely decked, the ship also offers onboard historians and naturalists, a culinary program that utilizes locally sourced ingredients, and some of the most spacious staterooms available.
What’s Trending
Is solo travel on your itinerary this year? These more intimate ships provide an ideal setting for those traveling alone. Not only does it simplify your trip and reduce the juggling of time zones, connecting flights, and more, but it also allows guests to once again reconnect with fellow, like-minded travelers. The RitzCarlton Yacht Collection, for example, offers the same care and attention that’s synonymous with the brand.
“Every aspect, from arrival to departure, is meticulously planned, ensuring a seamless, highly personalized voyage that consistently exceeds the expectations of our guests,” notes Murren.
It’s clear that travelers are craving a slower, more personal form of transportation and travel and Avalon Waterways is another notable company that advertises a better way to cruise. With ads that feature the T.V. show “Outlander” actor, Graham McTavish, the company vows to enhance the travel experience
with ships that intimately connect you with nature and spend more time in ports. In 2024, Avalon has new Bordeaux itineraries scheduled. “Along the shores of the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers, we’re elevating immersive experiences for guests, offering them deeper discoveries of the richest traditions in Southwest France,” says Pam Hoffe, president of Avalon Waterways.
Long gone are the days of behemoth ships and subpar dining. Today, cruising checks every box when it comes to luxury travel. Prelog sums it up perfectly, “It’s unpacking once, but still having an in-depth exploration of a destination and the ability to have deep and meaningful interactions with the locals.”

Remember, just because you can borrow up to a certain amount, chances are you won’t want to max that number out. It’s really important to avoid overextending your budget, especially in today’s market. Other housing expenses like home insurance, homeowners association (HOA) fees, and taxes are on the rise, and you need to factor those in. Bankrate offers this advice:
