1 29

If one were to pick a single adjective that would describe the difference between the freshman and the senior at Colby

that adjective would be "responsibl e . " The

college experience at a small coed institution cannot, of course, be summed up in one word, yet it can be said that much of that experience consists of a growing awareness of the consequences of behavior. As freshmen we learned to drink, and to take care of our buddies who drink too much. We learn about quiet hours and other mandatory rules. Our social codes evolve in the four years at Colby ; the way to understand social behavior is to realize that the individual must take responsibil ity for what he does. With that understanding, there can be no objections to particular forms of behavior, and by ano large what objections there are should be ignored. Throughout our four years we learn academic responsibility. Many who started with us do not share our graduation-some will share no graduation at all. Because of our h igh attrition rate we can be aware of what a college education is and is not. We should, and do, appreciate the fact that we are graduating. As undergraduates we were responsible for a great number of activities and projects-Fraternities and sororities, student government, student publications and clubs, religious l ife, big weekends, and honor societies. Individually or collectively we took care of our college l ife. We tried to influence policy, and sometimes our pressure and publicity achieved results. The ban on discrimination, open house rules, the drink ing rules, woman's hours, coed lounge, improvements in the library, and a new bookstore-these were all brought about in part as a result of student awareness that something needed to be changed. We have, as undergraduates, participated fully in the continuing achievement and growth of Colby College. And as graduates what will we do? Will we continue to exercise our responsibil ity toward Colby? I don't mean j ust financial responsibility. This i s important, but some other things are more important. For one thing, we can recruit the people we would l ike to see attend Colby, and we can discourage the application of those who don't measure up. We can suggest educational improvements. We can observe decisions of the Board of Trustees and question the wisdom of these decisions. Finally, we can continue to participate in the intellectual l ife of the college. One of the many summer programs Colby can and should institute is an alumni center, through which alumni could return a few weeks to Colby to participate in classes designed especially for returning sons of the college. The old homecoming, and the Joe College type it attracts should not be the only alumni experience available . W e began with a definition a n d e n d with an editorial. In a way, each graduating student can say the same thing. Each of us has enough material for a thousand editorials on his college experience . One hopes some of this material can be put to

fl

use . R ichard Pious

1 35

Late into the darkness of the night, with eyes forced into blackness by the inside of my arm, I watch a tiny death-curled leaf slide down the river of my mind. Getting too close to the bank , it is caught in an eddy formed by a small tongue of l and and a broken white birch-branch jutting out in the on-roll ing water. The leaf slowly revolves . . . halts . . . turns ; and slowly revolves-as if looking for an exit from its tiny snare . Later, quite early in the morning, the filmy cold has consumed the outer river-the leaf is halted in its confusion, and by the bleak, puffy morning; is quite frozen-a dead unit with the branch, the tiny jut of earth, and the water-glass surface. Death or momentary suspension? . . . By the Spring, its fibrous elements will have decomposed in the increasing solidarity of the ice ; its varying elements fused and lost in the river of itself. Was its existence only a thought in my mind or but a pawn in the reversing processes of Life? The cold freezes over the pupils of my eyes, my heart is suspended, and the components of the pulpy brain rot in the bony encasemen t . The sky is clear , stil l , and the frozen stars are pinholes in its black surface. I choke on the earth that trickles and now gushes into my gasping mouth. M y rage is smothered at its birth by the fine loam that has reached the back of my throat . . . and now ; goes further . . . The silvered circle of the naked moon wafts its transparent pallor over me, and now, further up the river, an imperceptible incision jags its way through the satin surface of the ice . h. byler
