Program Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 39

Simon Yao, Piano (age 12) Simon Yao is a seventh grader of Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School in Camarillo. He began playing piano at age six, initially studying with Richard Qiu. Simon has won various competitions including first prize and the Best Performance Award among all ages in the 2022 Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, gold medal in the 2023 Southern California Junior Bach Festival Complete Works Audition, and the Special Recognition Award in the 2023 Steinway Piano Competition. He has participated in master classes with Fabio Bidini, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Ory Shihor, Lang Lang, Boris Slutsky, and Alvin Chow. He made his solo orchestra debut at age 10 and gave his first solo concert at age nine. In March 2024, Simon will perform with the Glendale Youth Orchestra at the Alex Theatre as the winner of their annual concerto competition. Besides playing piano, Simon likes math and playing golf. Simon is a student of Jeff Lavner.

Dominic An, Violin (age 13) Henry Gronnier, Piano Dominic Hyunjin An studies at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. He began playing the violin at the age of eight. By age ten, Dominic had won second prize in the VOCE Competition’s state finals and became the youngest Concertmaster of the Temecula Youth Symphony. In December 2022, he was recognized as the youngest recipient of a scholarship from the Los Angeles Korean Musician Association, where he made his solo orchestral debut. He also won the Colburn Concerto Competition in May 2023, leading colburnschool.edu

to another solo performance with an orchestra. His musical skills have been displayed at the Poway Performing Arts Center’s 2023 spring concert, the Temecula Music Festival, and in the documentary The Last Repair Shop. Beyond his musical achievements, Dominic is dedicated to teaching violin to underprivileged children and performing at various charity concerts in the United States and Korea. His commitment to community service has earned him the President’s Volunteer Service Award Gold Medal for three consecutive years. As an eighth grader at Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Dominic excels in both his music and academic pursuits. Dominic is a Herbert Zipper Scholar and student of Henry Gronnier.

Piano Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14

I. Allegro ma non troppo Kai Canton, Piano (age 16) Kai Canton started taking piano lessons at age three and has performed for audiences in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Twenty-twenty-three has been a break-out year for Kai. He was awarded first prize in the California Association of Professional Music Teachers District IX Sonata/Sonatina Competition, second prize in the California Association of Professional Music Teachers District IX Honors Piano Competition, first prize in the California Association of Professional Music Teachers Junior Bach Competition Southern California Division, and Honorable Mention in the California Association of Professional Music Teachers District IX Romantic/Impressionistic Competition. Kai also won second prize in the Palm Beach Atlantic University Young Artist Piano Competition, earning the Sandra Houle Memorial Piano Scholarship, and he recently participated in the Sorel Piano Fellowship Weekend at SUNY Fredonia. Kai has performed in master classes with Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Fabio Bidini. Kai is a student of Ivana Grubelic Malo.

Andrés Engleman, Violin (age 16) Andrés Engleman began playing violin at the age of five and has studied at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts since 2016. He has also been a student in Colburn’s Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute Honors Program since 2019. In 2018, he soloed with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, and in 2019, he soloed with the Eastern Sierra Symphony. In 2020, he won first prize at the state level as a soloist in the Music Teachers’ Association of California’s VOCE Competition. Andrés has participated in master classes with world-renowned professionals including Anthea Kreston, Almita Vamos, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Gil Shaham. Andrés is a student of Aimée Kreston.

Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111

I. Maestoso—Allegro con brio ed appassionato Amy Liu, Piano (age 14) Amy Liu, originally from China, began her musical journey at the age of four and currently resides in Irvine, California. She attends Brentwood School, and she has studied at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts since 2019. She was the winner in the 2019 Music Teachers’ Association of California Piano Concerto Competition, 2020 Southwestern Youth Music Festival Piano Competition, 2020 Singapore International Piano Competition, and 2022 Chopin Youth International Piano Competition. Amy also participated in the 2018 Virginia Music Festival and the 2023 MAYA Music Festival in Switzerland. She has benefited from master classes with musicians, such as Matti Raekallio, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Lang Lang, and Stephen Kovacevich. Amy possesses a significant passion for music, particularly for Beethoven and Chopin. Beyond the piano, she enjoys reading, sports, attending concerts, and meeting new people. Amy is a student of Inga Kapouler-Gartner.

Meri Ter-Ghukasyan, Flute (age 15) Roberta Garten, Piano Meri started to play the flute at the age of seven in Yerevan, Armenia, where she participated in various orchestral programs and competitions. In 2018, she won the Grand Prix in the Art Music International Festival. Later on, Meri won first prize in the Odessa Music Competition in Ukraine, and she received an Award of Outstanding Achievement at the New Talent British International Youth Music Competition. In 2020, she soloed with the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia and had a master class with world-renowned flutist, Emmanuel Pahud. Meri then started studying at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. She was accepted into the Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute, and she was accepted into the Colburn Youth Orchestra in 2022. Meri is a Herbert Zipper Scholar and a student of Karen Lundgren.

Allegro moderato Dominic An, Violin (age 13) Collin Noah Gee, Cello (age 14) Simon Yao, Piano (age 12) Arensky Trio Dominic Hyunjin An (violin), Collin Noah Gee (cello), and Simon Yao (piano) are members of Colburn’s Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute Honors Program. Coached by Aimée Kreston, the honors piano trio was formed in the fall of 2023 and recently participated in a master class with Lisa Batiashvili, Gautier Capuçon, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Collin Noah Gee is from Arcadia, California, and a freshman at Arcadia High School. He has been playing cello since he was seven years old and is currently studying with Dr. Elizabeth Su. This is Collin’s third year playing with the Colburn Advanced Orchestras, and he is currently the principal cellist of the Colburn Chamber Orchestra. He was the grand prize winner in addition to winning first prize in both the concerto and baroque categories at the Satori Music Festival in 2021. Besides pursuing his musical journey, he is sharing his gift by being a member of the Back to Bach Project and donating some of his savings to music programs for underprivileged kids. Outside of music, Collin is a member of the Arcadia High School speech and debate team, and he enjoys reading, badminton, and boba.

Holly Lacey, Violin (age 16) InYoung Huh, Piano Holly Lacey, violin, was a winner of the 2023 Colburn Concerto Competition, and as such, performed as soloist with the Colburn Chamber Orchestra. She has also previously performed as soloist with the Los Angeles Dream Orchestra and the Colburn String Orchestra. Holly is a prior first prize winner of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers Contemporary Music Competition, the Southern California Philharmonic Young Artists Competition, and Southern California Junior Bach Festival Complete Works Audition. Holly serves as the current Concertmaster of the Colburn Sinfonietta (2022–present) and previous Concertmaster of the Colburn Youth Orchestra (2021–22). As a member of the Nth Trio, Holly was awarded the 2023 inaugural Horzowski Trio Prize at the 50th Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and first prize in the 2023 California-wide Music Teachers’ Association of California VOCE Chamber Music Competition. During the summers, Holly attends the Meadowmount School of Music where she studies with Gerardo Ribeiro. She has had the privilege of playing in master classes for Alexander Kerr, Kikiue Ikeda, Almita Vamos, and Ivan Zenaty, among others. Holly is a student of Margaret Batjer.

Dr. Herbert Zipper leads a concert at the 32nd Street Magnet School in Los Angeles.

Herbert Zipper, Champion of Community Music Dr. Herbert Zipper, for whom the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall is named, was a pioneer of the community music movement in the United States. Remembered as a dedicated activist, Dr. Zipper was known for his work in music education and his deep commitment to students. He believed a performing arts education should be available to everyone, a philosophy on which Colburn’s mission of “access to excellence” was built. Born in Vienna in 1904, Zipper was accepted into the Viennese Academy of Music where he studied with Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel. Later in life, after his release from the Dachau concentration camp, he accepted a conducting position with the Manila Symphony Orchestra where he reunited with his future wife, Trudl Dubsky. The two later migrated to the U.S. where Zipper expanded his efforts in music education. On August 26, 1980, the groundwork for the Colburn School was secured after Zipper approached Richard D. Colburn with the idea of making the University of Southern California’s preparatory school independent. One of the very finest halls for chamber music in the U.S., our beloved 430-seat performance hall is named after Herbert Zipper. Colburn proudly welcomes students, faculty, staff, families, and other members of the community to Zipper Hall each year.
