I got crushed beneath the 1978 Shovelhead, to the point I could no longer breath!!!

Unloading the bike out of my old truck! With me sitting on the ground holding the “unloading” board in place, so my son in law could back my blue FLH out of the Silverado’s truck bed. As Boogie pulled the handlebars back toward his person, the board came off the truck bed, causing the heavy Harley to fall on me, literally crushing me between it & the ground, folded over like a piece of typing paper when you want 4 sides to write on.

I was so crushed by it’s weight that I couldn’t breath. I had what air I had in my lungs only. I have heard many people say what they would announce to the world for all to hear, if they knew they were dying. Some say, they would say “Oh God/Jesus”, others, “Oh Shit”, etc.

You know what I said? “Help Me!” I said it three times, and was blacking out when my SIL, somehow got his leg out from between myself and the bike, to lift that bohemoth off of me. I immediately streched out on the ground and started breathing again. I was saved!!! Thank God and Boogie for this. I owe my life to both.

I was sore for the rest of my time there, (I was there to perform my oldest granddaughter’s wedding), as my back was aching even more now than previously, from scatica (at that time 5 solid months of everyday PAIN)! Boogie, said it looked like I could have been able to kiss my own butt, so it stretched some back muscles pretty good, and I’m not for sure I didn’t crack a couple of ribs. All in all, I was grateful, but the pain was not appreciated on top of what I already had, LOL!

What went wrong, well it was the first time in 12 years that I drove a car/truck to KY, as I always ride there on one of my bikes. Twelve years of riding to see family/friends a couple of times a year, was

God’s Corner

While we’re all weak and sinful, we are thankful to have Jesus to atone for our sins and to intercede before the Father on our behalf. Hallelujah for that grace! However, there are still a couple of significant problems with our sins. This verse reminds us of one of them. We don’t want our sins to become a stumbling block to others or a disgrace to God and his

broken, and I paid the price.

First, I was going to load up 2 bikes to take there, one for my SIL to keep and the FLH for me to ride while I was there. After struggling to load the one bike I didn’t attempt to load the Softtail, so off I went.

On the way up, right outside of Dalton GA, the radiator let loose and I was grounded there for a night. After paying a “premium” price for a cheap room, I put my demise upon Face Book, and within an hour I had all kinds of offered help.

But it was Mike & Denise that lived very close to where I was, so I humbly asked them to come to my rescue. AAA hauled the Silverado to a mechanic’s shop and within in 2 hours & $400 I said good bye to the Good Samaritans and pulled out, again, for KY.

The wedding went as planned, and my granddaughter was so beautiful, it made we weep. As the day went on I became even more sore and had to leave the reception early to go back to my daughter’s home to lay down. It didn’t take long for me to start snoozing, and the next thing I remember, after 2 trips to the bathroom during the night, was a rooster crowing and it was daylight outside, so I gingerly rose from my borrowed (from my grand son) bed, more sore now than ever.

As I loaded up to head home to see my gorgeous wife, 825 miles Southeast of me, all I thought about, other than seeing Bianca, was going through Chattanooga and Atlanta, two cities we all dread to come up on while traveling, but by the grace of the good Lord, it was smooth sailing and though my back was kicking my butt, (I had a cushion to put between my lower back and the seat that helped), driving became tolerable. So I aimed the old Chevy towards my Home Sweet Home. Thirteen hours later I was pulling into mine and B’s driveway.

I’d like to add more, but I believe you get the picture of my jinxed trip, jinxed because I should have been riding not driving! Cochise

Qualifications to be a legend/icon is to be in your 70’s and lived here 20+ years, or dead!

This is iconic Art Hamilton, and I’ve known him for over 20 years. Art is a master mechanic with his speciality being Harleys. He’s worked for Black Gold for years, but also at Hog Ridin & Doom Town Choppers.

Art was an instructor at the now defunct MMI or AMI, or whatever it was called when it was up near the HD Dealership. He is a great person who knows his stuff, as he has built some awesome scoots, years a go, and recently refurbishing some older iron. From Ironheads to Twin Cams he has built them and rides them. Art is good people!!! ‘Chise

Gary Luke AKA Luke is a Viet Nam combat vet, who loves and rides his motorcycles.

Like a lot of us, age has crept in & slowed down any long rides, but Luke still gets out for a couple of weekly trips to the Iron Horse & to Bike Night/Shovelhead Night!

Luke is another one, who is just good people. Always willing to talk with people about any and everything Nam and bikerdom. Right now he is doing some kind of cleaning of motorcycle parts (and other things) with steam/ water, (honestly I forgot what it’s called), but anyway when he is done, the piece looks brand new!

Thanks brother in arms for being a friend, I cherish your friendship, oh and “Stay Kool”!!! ~Cochise

MONDO MAN!!! Another great guy that I’ve known for years, first through the Hot Rod/Antique Vehicles, then through Choppers.

Mondo Man has built a few hot rods and some kool Choppers. What I love about his work is, he will chop & build whatever is available. In other words it doesn’t have to be a Harley.

I’m going to throw in a pic here of one of his cars, as he’s a member of the Misfires CC, as well as a badass biker! Thanks Mondo for keeping the Chopper world alive, well and iconic, like you. Cochise

Below: Starting a 500 BSA chopper. It was a big single and would try to kill you. I lived up in Washington state then. I bought the XLCR a year later, it was like a Cadillac compared to the Beezer! ~Mondo Man

I’ve known Andy for several years, first from the Swap Meets, where he always sits up, then later as him being a part of the Panhead Committee, where I hang out with those rowdy old men, HaHaHa from time to time. Andy, though we disagree on politics, is GOOD people!

Moving here for good in ‘03 he started his swapping, buying and selling old iron parts.

Known for always having some kool stuff while sit up at Rossmeyers and willing to talk to all that wants to sit and hear a good story from him, thus causing him to become an icon. Living here 23 years and at 72 years old, he qualifies for this issue!

By the way, ask Andy about his cross country trip in the very early ‘70’s that took 31 days to complete, in an old mail truck/van, LOL! And buying a big bag of weed (a lid) from a kid in Cally for ten bucks!!! Back then Weed was just that, Weed!!!

Look for this brother at the swap meet every month!!! ~Cochise

Round and Round

O.K., here’s the plan. Gas up the bike and point her towards I95. A twenty minute blast straight up the intestate to Hwy. 40 in Ormond Beach. Caught the red light at the exit, as usual. Left onto 40 and chased it to it’s second traffic light. Leaned it to the right just enough to line her up onto Timber Creek Rd. Followed that to it’s second traffic light as well. Another right lean onto Airport Rd. and just kicked back a bit and enjoyed a leapfrog over I95 followed by a handful of curves and light hills. Love this short ride, short but very quiet and picturesque. Never much traffic.

This short roll will end at US1. Caught the red light as usual, again! Left lean this time and before you can say “Where are we going”? we’re there. The Beaver Bar. No, not for cocktails, way too early for that. It’s for their $7.50 breakfast buffet, times two of coarse. Seems only fair that since the bike’s tank is full we should fill our tanks also. Done and Done! Made 30 or 45 minutes disappear, climbed back aboard the scoot and North was the direction of choice.

Put half a dozen miles or so behind us and landed in the Destination Daytona parking lot for their monthly swap meet. Don’t typically buy anything but we just love to look around. And, it’s a great way to walk off some of that delicious breakfast! Nothing really grabbed our eye but we did bump into a couple of friends. Jeff, who we met and have ridden with for several years, or there about. Strolled

around a bit longer and ran smack dab into Ray. Another riding friend, same time frame. Always great to run into friendly faces wherever we go!

Too early for the band to start so we climbed aboard again and reversed coarse, to the Iron Horse Saloon for a bloody and a mimosa. It’s kind of become a Sunday tradition for us. Thank You, Lisa! Still have some time before the band hits the stage so we decided to make a break for “The Loop”. If you love a canopy covered road with twists and turns abound, this is a must! Been riding this little slice of Heaven for a couple of decades now. Incredible! Through a part of the loop and made our way back to US1 right where the White Eagle used to live. Around another one of those silly Roundabouts, made it about three quarters of the way around that Merry Go Round and it spit us out right onto the Southbound lane on US1. Alright, south it is! “Let’s hit the swap meet again”, she said. “I want to look at some long sleeve T shirts I saw there”. Her command is my wish. I guess it was later then we thought, T shirt vendor was gone.

Back to the Iron Horse to grab some vibes from the band, Gun Shy. Great Vibes! Hung there just long enough to wet our whistles, a couple of times and headed up to Saints and Sinners, (Destination Daytona), for some Big Engine sounds! Not car engines, Big Engine was the band. Seems as though we’ve going in circles! Beaver Bar, Iron Horse, Saints and Sinners, Iron Horse, and came to rest back at Destination Daytona?! Doesn’t matter though. Weather was Great, bands were Awesome, ride couldn’t have been better, even though we were going..............Round and Rou nd. Gregg Riggle

Mryna

My friend Rocky is another local legend, selling parts/old iron parts all over East of the Mississippi. He’s heavy into old Harleys, and throws one of the biggest parties ever during Bike Week, that draws 50 older bikes in his yard and down both streets. It’s like a full blown Old Iron/Antique Bike Show. It NEVER disappoints. He also delivers some good grub, and if you want to get one of the best Chinese egg rolls ever, you better get there early, IF you’re invited. Rocky is GREAT people!!!

BTW, he’s real old, really old....one day older than me! lol

“I Love Doing These Kushtails!” ~ Marcus

I don’t remember the year I met Scott Durkee, but I am glad I did, as we have been friends since that day. Scott builds & rides some cool bikes, & has been for many years. You can catch this bro at the Fox Head in Osteen, on his ‘78 FLH. A beautiful bike, and like I said, gets ridden a lot. Durkee you’re an Icon in my eyes as you’re just cool & been around long enough in our world to no the true score! ~Chise

Another Daytona Beach mechanic & Icon, Domenick Greco. From what I’ve been told by Marcus & Shaun, Dom is a master mechanic that builds motors “right”.

He has built many bikes over the years, and like so many more in this issue, rides them. The ONLY way to be.

I’m not for sure how long he has lived here, but long enough to met the criteria of being Legend. He and his wife Tina are bikers with a great love for rescuing kittens/cats. Their hearts are big for these orphans and is on speed dial for animal people who know they won’t be turned down by this good couple.

Look for Dom riding around town on one of his builds, mostly older iron and say hey to him, for keeping chopping and cats alive.
