SAN MARCOS — The new owner of the Old California Restaurant Row property in San Marcos has applied to develop over 200 housing units and 10,000 square feet of new commercial space on a portion of the siteRANCHO still home to several businesses. SFNEWS Located along West San Marcos Boulevard and Via Vera Cruz, Restaurant Row has been a San Marcos pillar since it was founded by developer Jim Eubank in the 1970s, hosting a variety of mom-and-pop as well as chain eateries over the years. Many were shocked when the Eubank family sold the land to a company called San Marcos Restaurant Row LLC at the end of 2020, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Application materials submitted to the city of San Marcos on June 17 identify the new owner as Elizabeth Papera and real estate company Lennar Homes of California as the developer and applicant for the project. The submitted plans cover a nearly 11-acre site area in the center of the property, partially bordering West San Marcos Boulevard. Most of the area is currently used for parking but also houses businesses The King & I of San Marcos, Landon’s East Meets West, Old California Mining Company, The 55 Yardline Sports Bar and Grill, and IHOP in two separate buildings. City officials do not know whether the developer plans to displace these businesses as part of their project. “If they are going to be displaced, I don’t know if the developer is going to be working with the exist-

Candidate’s leaked email stirs controversy By Stephen Wyer

ENCINITAS — Anonymous individuals recently installed a series of public displays across the city featuring copies of a one-way email sent from first-time mayoral candidate Jeff Morris to his political foil, Mayor Catherine Blakespear, attempting to strike an accord before the election. Morris, administrator of Facebook group Encinitas Watchdogs and staunch critic of city leadership, sent an email to Blakespear on March 10 titled “Potential Common Ground,” urging the mayor to “(discuss) some type of agreement or truce before the election,” according to a copy of the communication obtained and authenticated by The Coast News. “We have far more commonalities than you know, and I am not against most of your decisions,”

Morris wrote. “The fact that you are running for senator is huge. Maybe we can work something out where you get elected to senate and be on good terms with Encinitas residents. I can calm this community down. It could be invaluable for us to have a working reMORRIS lationship.” The email does not include a response from Blakespear. But the conciliatory language used in the email — received by an anonymous individual via public records request earlier this month and shared with The Coast News — stands in stark contrast to Morris' campaign platform and his TURN TO EMAIL ON 9

CARLSBAD — The city’s latest large-scale, mixed-use development broke ground in June and is on track to come online next year.

Marja Acres, the once quaint site of several businesses on El Camino Real, located south of Kelly Drive across from Robertson Ranch, was sold by Mike and Marja Selna in 2015 in a joint agreement with New Urban West and San Diego-based real estate investment firm, IHP Capital Partners. IHP has now fully acquired the property and
