Keeping it simple beats clutter (ARA) — You’re feeling like the walls are closing in. You’re not a hoarder, but you just have too much stuff. It’s not that difficult to change your ways. If you want to take control of clutter, get a few boxes, one for each room in your home. Start by organizing one room at a time. Begin this initiative by removing everything on top of your cabinets, tables and in bookcases and place it all in a box, says Keith McCleary, academic director of Interior Design at The Art Institute of

York — Pennsylvania. If there are other random accessories in the room, remove them as well. Keep just the basic furnishings. Now sit with the room in its simplest form for awhile. “In room design, make good decisions about what you choose to put in the room and, often more importantly, in what you choose to leave out,” McCleary says. “Simplicity and clean lines make a room feel livable and that’s what it’s really all about: comfortable living.”

Think about the kind of focal point you’re trying to create. How should you orchestrate this space and show off your special pieces in terms of size, scale, color and texture? Exciting and colorful advances in fireplace technology SAN MARCOS — For the last 25 years, most homeowners have had a choice of burning either wood or artificial gas logs in their fireplace. But now there are lots of options. First of all, many fireplace owners have let go of the old notion that the accessory inside their fireplace must look as close to wood as possible. While artificial gas logs have gotten more realistic and beautiful than ever, they now offer many colors of glass to use inside the fireplace instead of gas logs. Some people call the look “fire on ice” or “hot

glass,” but the trend has taken off and Fireplaces Plus in San Marcos has more than 17 different colors of glass to use. If you still want to use the artificial gas logs, you can add the glass as filler around the base of the gas logs. The look is clean and the glass sparkles as it reflects the flame from the logs. When a fireplace has a glass door, the homeowner should always use the fireplace with the doors open and then close the doors when they are finished using the fireplace or when they are going to let the fire die down. This way

the gas logs or burning wood radiate the maximum amount of heat into the room while they are burning and while the doors are open. Then when the doors are closed, the warm air in the home stays in the home rather than being lost up the chimney. Tips for keeping your garden truly organic (ARA) — The trend for gardening at home continues to grow — and people are taking a particular interest in raising their flowers and vegetables organically. With such prominent figures as Michelle Obama taking public initiatives in organic gardening, more and more products that cater to the trend are appearing. Unfortunately, the increased interest in organic gardening has led to some confusion — and some deception — about what it means for a product to be “organic.” The labeling of products has become a minefield for consumers who are interested in eco-friendly agriculture. It can be difficult to know exactly what is meant by products labeled “natural,” “plantbased” or “organic.” Official organic labeling comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).Their seal comes in a few forms, denoting whether a product is “100 percent organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic” ingredients. Unfortunately, anecdotal evidence suggests this multitiered labeling system is also contributing to consumer confusion. For example, for a product to be labeled 100 percent organic, everything in it must

be certified organic. If it says just “organic,” that means that it must contain 95 percent certified organic ingredients. If a product contains 70 percent organic ingredients, it can be labeled as being “made with organic [ingredients].” Any product with less than 70 percent organic ingredients cannot carry the USDA seal. Another thing to keep in mind is that a product labeled “natural” is not organic. While there might be some naturally occurring ingredients in the product, it doesn’t mean that it’s safe or earth-friendly — not to mention organic. Perhaps in an effort to simplify the consumer’s “organic” label options, the USDA also directs consumers to other organizations that can help them determine whether or not the products they’re buying are 100 percent organic. One of those, the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is a nonprofit, independent organization that gives reviews of products and how they stand up to the National Organic Standards from the USDA. However, he adds “not everyone, be it the home owner or gardener, is maintaining a green positive lawn.” Best practices dictate minimizing carbon emissions associated with lawn maintenance while maximizing the “green” benefits of turfgrass. These benefits include oxygen production, heat reduction, dust and pollutant absorption, ground water filtration and runoff control, and soil stabilization. Surprisingly, most lawns are over-maintained and under-cared for, resulting in long-term health and environment problems even if they appear green in color. Lawns are often mowed too low, and also too frequently during the winter months. Perhaps the most common maintenance problem is over-edging. Bathroom additions don’t have to be expensive (ARA) — As older adults age in place and more households make room for multiple generations, how will Americans respond to the home-improvement challenge? Two important housing trends are both emerging and merging today: Older adults increasingly want to “age in place,” while a record number of households have united across multiple generations. The second trend is in response to both the flagging economy and to support elder parents’ desire to stay at home. According to AARP, nearly 90 percent of older Americans want to remain in their homes as they age. But unresolved barriers to convenience and safety at home can force them to relocate. And while extended families were common until World War II, the practice waned with more prosperous times. Now the multi-generational family homestead is making a comeback. In 2008 a record 49 million Americans lived in a house-

hold with at least two adult generations, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census data. If your home is reaching capacity, as family members band together, you are likely faced with a home-improvement challenge. How can you inexpensively accommodate additional family members under a single roof, especially their need for added bathrooms? (ARA) — A visit with your doctor is the best way to determine whether you have a cold or an allergy. While allergy symptoms and cold symptoms are very similar, there are some signs to look for if you want to know the difference. 1. Take a look at the color of your nasal discharge, mucous or saliva. Both allergies and colds cause a runny nose, but for cold sufferers, the discharge is usually green or brown — which is a sign of an infection. “If the mucous is clear — it is probably an allergy,” says Dr. Carl Wurster, chair, Allied Health Department, at Brown Mackie College — Boise. The allergy comes from an aller-

gen, while the cold indicates exposure to a virus. 2. Allergy sufferers do not generally have to deal with body pain, but if you have a headache and feel lots of aches and pains, it’s probably a cold. If you have a viral cold, you’ll also experience fatigue and a severe sore throat. “A mild sore throat may accompany an allergy, but with a cold you could lose your voice and have hoarseness. It is rare to be hoarse with allergies and lose your voice,” adds Wurster. 3. Check your calendar and keep track of how long you’ve been sneezing or feeling sick. Answers to five common questions about the water in your home pipes (ARA) — Do you take clean water for granted? As one of the basic necessities of life, you are constantly consuming water. Whether you are drinking it, cleaning with it or using it in your home appliances, the quality of your water affects your life. However, a recent Kenmore and Sears consumer survey on water treatment highlights the need for additional education on the water we consume, as not all Americans understand the differences and benefits of treated versus untreated water. In fact, the survey reveals that 85 percent of respondents are aware they could be drinking more contaminants in their unfiltered tap water compared to the treated alternative; however, they don’t currently have an in-home water filtration system. Does this mean you are too trusting when it comes to the quality of water in your home? The survey further reveals that 61 percent of homeowners and renters said they believe the water in their home is clean enough to drink without installing a water treatment system.Although,more than 57 percent admitted that if the water in their home had a strange taste or an odd color, they would consider installing a water system. There are some common questions that people have about water consumption and water treatment, and some things you should know about how a water treatment system can improve the quality of the water you use. 1. How do impurities get into your water? Treatment methods vary by region,as does water quality. Public water must adhere to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) minimum standards. However, impurities and other contaminants, such as lead, bacteria and even traces of prescription drugs can enter into your water as it makes its way through city pipes and ultimately into your drinking glass.According to the survey conducted by Kenmore and Sears, a shocking and overwhelming majority of Americans, more than 75 percent, are unaware of the potential dangers that may be lurking in their pipes.Nevertheless, there are, in fact, a number of contaminants and pollutants that can be found in your running water. While local water companies are required by the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 to monitor the quality of

their water and report annually to customers based on health standards for contaminants established by the EPA, why not take preventative measures by installing an in-home water treatment system? 2.Why is having soft water important? Hard water can cause many undesired affects in a home.Scale can build up in your pipes, which can reduce water flow and increase the maintenance on your plumbing and faucets. Hardness minerals can also build-up on sinks and bathtubs, as well as leave spots on dishes and glassware.This is why making the switch from hard water to soft water can be important in the home, as a water softener can help with these common household issues. In addition, bathing or showering with soft water is usually gentler on your skin and makes it easier for you to rinse off soap or shampoo. As a result, another benefit of having a water softener is that you can use less of these products, which may help decrease the amount of soaps and detergents that are used. 3.If water is softened,does that mean it’s clean? While water softeners bring significant benefits to water quality,it might be wise to also install a filtration system to help eliminate additional impurities from drinking water. Filtration systems can be installed under the kitchen sink or installed on the main water line to service the whole home. 4. How is your water softened, if it is softened? Give old interior new life with Vogue Home Interiors CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — One of Vogue Home Interiors’ recent projects was to redesign a master bedroom in a condo overlooking the water. The room had 30-year-old wallpaper that couldn’t come down without bringing the sheetrock with it. Owner and designer Myrna Everett’s challenge was to bring in a fresh new look that was contemporary while incorporating the blue and green floral wallpaper. She was tasked with essentially reinvent the same style treatment of sheers/drapes and canopy in a new way, and with more functionality. Everett found a blue velvet in the exact same shade that was in the wallpaper as well as an up-to-date sheer that had lots of sparkle and shine to reflect light. She used the blue velvet for the window canopy and the bed drapes and completely lined all of it in the sheer material. She also built a headboard with a mirrored frame to tie in the new mirrored bedside

tables. She then updated the canopy with a smooth interior ceiling and hung a very contemporary Lucite chandelier from the center making the light bounce off the silvery white sheers and mirrored frame of the headboard. The effect provides enough light for reading and can be dimmed or switched off from a switch hidden near the headboard for easy access The owners also wanted a TV in the room, but wanted it hidden from view. Everett designed a bed drape at the foot of the bed conceals a flat screen monitor that is visible only when you are in bed. The stand it is mounted on is a slim metal stand that is hidden between the drape and sheer so the screen appears to float discreetly at the corner of the bed. After the bedroom was complete, the owners’ old dog bed looked even worse. “It was old and dirty we decided Molly needed a brand new bed that

What you should know before choosing a home fire sprinkler system (ARA) —- Most people have never stopped to consider the various options available for home fire sprinkler systems.That’s because, until now, most homes were not protected by a residential sprinkler system. In response to growing concerns about fatalities caused by household fires, as well as enhanced education regarding the effectiveness of fire sprinkler systems, building codes are changing to prompt an increase in the number of homes having sprinklers. January 2011 is when the new code takes effect requiring that single-family homes constructed after that time contain sprinklers (although each state has the option to adopt the code on its own timeline). Sometimes allergy sufferers have a line across the tip if their nose and puffiness under their lower eyelids because of heparin (a substance naturally generated from the white cells of the body),” he says. 4. If your eyes, nose, throat or mouth itch, it’s a sure bet that you are reacting to some kind of allergen which can come from pollen or even an allergen in the workplace or on a college campus. If your allergy stems from something in your workplace, some industries have set up “clean

rooms,” where employees wear “clean suits” in highlysterile rooms. Some employees feel claustrophobic in clean rooms, but people with allergies tend to like it. “With allergies, you will run a low-grade fever of 100.1 or 100.2 F. With the viral or bacterial cold your temperature will be a degree higher — 103 or 104 F,” says Wurster. Hay fever is the old term for allergies “because you get symptoms of a cold with a low grade fever,” Wurster says. The average person does not know whether their sickness is viral, bacterial or the result of an allergen. “Allergy sufferers should consider using antihistamines at night (Benadryl),” Wurster says. “A cold will not respond to an antihistamine. Claritin and Afrin would be effective during the day because they don’t cause drowsiness. Take a decongestant to prevent mucous from building up in your sinuses.” Not being able to sleep at night is another sign of an allergy. “You should elevate yourself on a bunch of pillows to get the drainage of fluid out of your head to

help you fall asleep,” says Wurster. Wurster says there is one good thing about having allergies. “Allergy sufferers are genetically-coordinated with high intelligence.” He added that “the peak incidence of allergies can be absent from the onset of puberty to the mid-20s, but can show up when the patient is in their 30s and late 40s.” For cold sufferers, the key is to visit your physician because you may need antibiotics. Try to avert getting a cold. “When it first starts, rinse your nose out with salt water four to five times a day. It can prevent a bacterial cold and treat sinus infections,” he says. “For some people with allergies, mucous gets backed up in their sinuses which serves as fertile ground for bacterial culture. What could have been a twoto three-day allergy can turn into sinusitis, bronchitis or a cold which includes congestion and the risk of an upper respiratory virus infection,” says Wurster who added, “It’s important to visit your doctor to see if your lungs are clear.”
