ISSUE 3
G’DAY And here we are. A new year. Hands up if you’re feeling invigorated by the clean slate that is 2021? Ah, all of you. Marvellous. Well, I can’t blame you. There was a universal feeling of joy when the clock struck midnight on the final day of 2020, wasn’t there? A new year! A fresh start. If last year taught us anything, it was how resilient we are. But it was all pretty tiring, wasn’t it? This year, the team at Coasties HQ have decided to be a little kinder to ourselves - mind, body and soul. Fancy joining? Well, this issue is packed with ways to nail your own self-care routines. In fact, Issue 3 is all about discovering the incredible health and wellness that is available right here on our doorstep. From healthy eats and healing yoga, to cosmetic acupuncture and mentoring to help you slow down. And at the helm of each of these local businesses are some outrageously smart and passionate people. We hope each page inspires you to support their dream of arming our community with the skills and knowledge to be healthy and, most importantly, happy. My advice? Just tap into whatever’s your jam, #supportlocal along the way and, most of all, try not feel the pressure to completely overhaul your everything. Seriously, you are awesome just the way you are.

THERE’S A NEW WAY TO
SUPPORT LOCAL Did you know that in the first half of 2020, global pizza chain Dominos made a staggering $3.3 billion? Kmart pulled in $414million in Australia alone. And Complimentary drink at The Joker and Thief? Image supplied
Amazon made a whopping $96.1 billion in just three months. Thanks to the pandemic, lockdowns and life inside our bubble, the money we would have spent when walking into local businesses was often spent at global chains instead. So in 2021 it’s time to claw it back and support local. And we’re here to help. We’ve launched the Coasties Card - a deals card for Central Coast locals only, that unlocks exclusive savings in businesses right across our region. Our aim is simple: we’re hoping a sweet deal will inspire you to keep shopping small and keep pushing that all important money back into our local economy.
HOW DOES IT #SUPPORTLOCAL?
Good question. How does a cheaper rate actually help support a local
Up to 25% off total bill
business? Well, here’s the thing. Say,
In over 30 eateries across the Central Coast,
you’re not really wanting to cook
including The Bon Pavilion, Rhonda’s, The Joker
dinner tonight. You might be tempted
and Thief, The Settler’s Tavern, Mumbo Jumbos
to call a certain pizza chain... But
and Six String Brewery Co.
when you’re offered a saving in a local restaurant, say, 25% off your entire bill, or free wine with your meal, you’re more likely to eat out and support a local business, right?
Fashion & beauty savings In over 60 businesses, including drøm clothing, Miki Finn, Kloth, Sukisu, Pistachio & Co., Meraki Hair
HOW DOES IT WORK?
& Beautè, Central Coast Cosmetic Injections, The Healing Room: Wamberal
The Coasties Card is an annual membership card that costs $25. This unlocks a stack of deals across 120 local businesses for the next year, and you can use it as often as you want. Not bad considering it works out at $2 a month. Less than a takeout latte.
HOW DO I JOIN?
Simple as. Either visit the website coastiescard.com.au or scan the QR code on the right with your phone. Once you unlock this wonderful world dedicated to supporting local you can search though the deals, join up and then later sign into your account.

The Other Stuff
The search is over. We’ve found the best acai bowl on the Coast. Whipped to perfection, sprinkled with coconut, emblazoned with berries and finished off with edible flowers, it looks too good to eat. But you will eat it and it will change your world, guaranteed. Or your morning, at the very least.
It’s pretty child-friendly here, and the kids’ milkshakes are a real winner. There’s seating both indoors and outdoors. But it is a busy spot on the weekend, so pre-book if you’re planning a visit during peak times. And a shout out to the team for having their eye on locally-sourced produce.
Drinks Try the juices. Seriously, the multicoloured, nutritionally-packed juices at The Boy & The Rose are everything. Our pick is the beetroot-based Sunburn.

Step into this tranquil rainforestretreat and experience delicious vegetarian and vegan fare
Food If there’s only one thing you do in 2021, it should be to visit the Bamboo Buddha Cafe and try the Buddha burger. With its walnut patty, this veggie burger is a taste sensation that is rich, slightly sweet and completely delicious. An absolute game changer. It will undoubtedly elbow its way into your top three burgers of all time, even if you’re not a vegetarian.
Drinks Fresh juices, multicoloured speciality lattes, kombucha on tap and impressive smoothie bowls. The sky’s the limit on the freshness of the drinks available here.
The Other Stuff There’s no other spot like this on the Coast. Surrounded by stunning greenery, centred around a koi-filled pond and with super-friendly staff and childfriendly food options, this is a winning spot for all. It really is an oasis that has its eye on detail.

And these eateries create dishes that are just that
Three Donkeys Wholefood Cafe, Wamberal
The General Store Norah Head, Norah Head
This pocket-rocket of a cafe, found in the backstreets of Wambie, is packed with some of the healthiest fare you’ll find on the Coast. Most come for the multicoloured lattes, ranging from beetroot to matcha, but for us it’s the smoothie bowls. Pretty as a picture and packed full of the good stuff, like nut butter, raw honey and bee pollen. It’s a thing. (threedonkeys.com.au)
The menu here is crammed with gluten-free and vegan-friendly bites, making meal time for those with an intolerance a joy rather than a disappointment. We’re big fans of the plant-based buckwheat waffles that are delightfully showy. Seriously, they’re stacked high, jewelled-up with raspberry meringue shards and dripping in coyo ice-cream. The ruling master of the menu, for sure. (8 Bush St)
Bay Organics, Toowoon Bay Looks may deceive as this is so much more than just a juice bar. In fact, it’s one of the few spots along the Toowoon strip that has indoor seating. So grab a pew and enjoy everything this organic cafe has to offer. We’re talking sourdough toast topped with zucchini relish, cucumber and cashew cheese drizzle, to name just one winner off the breakfast menu. Pure joy. (bayorganics.com.au)
This Little Piggy, Point Clare There are veggies, and there are This Little Piggy veggies. Each dish is packed with all the deliciousness of chargrilled eggplant, beetroot relish, crispy snow pea tendrils and all the herbs. Talk about levelling it all the way up. Seriously, you will easily hit your five a day well before noon when you visit this cute little nook of a cafe. (thislittlepiggyeatanddrink.com.au)
Flour & Co., Toowoon Bay For those with a sweet tooth, this is your place. Flour & Co. is always stocked up with freshly made raw treats. A personal favourite of ours is the raw lemon cheesecake. It tastes like a sin, but is packed with all the good stuff. And you’ll never be served a bad cup of coffee here, either. The outrageously happy team are particular about their beans and it pays off. A true all rounder. (88 Toowoon Bay Rd)

LET’S EAT TO THAT Coasties Card members, here are some of the exclusive deals your #supportlocal card unlocks at local eateries...
It’s always a fun time at The Joker, and it’s even more fun when you get a free glass of house wine with every main meal you order. Winner winner, chicken dinner. Generally we go for the seafood but you get what we’re saying. (thejokerandthief.com.au)
Sweet Caroline, East Gosford Since opening in September last year, Sweet Caroline has become an instant hit on the Coast. Delicious at breakfast and fun for cocktails at night. Best of all, Coasties Card members get 10% off your total bill all day, every day. (sweetcarolinecentralcoast.com.au)
Mumbo Jumbos, Terrigal Let’s be real, you don’t need much of an excuse to sneak off for a night at Mumbos. This rooftop bar is always a fun vibe. And you can enjoy a free glass of house wine with every main purchased. Then onto the rum cocktails, right? (mumbojumbos.com.au)
The Boathouse Hotel Patonga Beat the crowds and visit The Boathouse for midweek breakfast and get 20% off your bill. Once you’re fuelled up to the eyeballs, walk it all off on the bush walk up over to Pearl Beach. Eating out doesn’t get much better than that really, does it? (theboathousehotelpatonga.com.au)
The Hot Chook Shop, Ettalong Hold up! This isn’t just any hot chicken shop, it’s a culinary dream created by renowned chef Nicola Coccia. But what about wellness? Health? Self-care? And all those buzzwords in between? Perhaps Long Jetty isn’t your first thought, but it should be. There is no other area in our region that has such a concentrated offering of health and wellness as Long Jetty. So, perhaps it’s no real surprise it is our spotlighted suburb this issue. Pack your yoga mat, grab some goji berries and let’s go…
Let’s Eat & Drink
Above and below, Box on the Water. Bottom right, Osteria Il Coccia. Images supplied
Let’s play a word game. We’ll say Long Jetty, and we’re guessing it won’t be long before you think edgy, cool, hip or boho. A spot to get a tattoo, an out-there haircut, to let your freak fly and get that obligatory picture next to the fifty-shades-of-purple Long Jetty mural. After all, it looks hell-of-apretty on your socials.
Long Jetty is home to not one but two of the most popular cafes on the Central Coast. Yep, we’re looking at you, The Glass Onion Society (theglassonionsociety.com) and Green Tangerine (393 The Entrance Rd). These two cafes, that sit on opposite sides of that busy stretch of road, are packed from the moment they open until they close. And for good reason; you’ll always get fresh fare, incredible coffee and great vibes. We thought we’d also spread some love to their neighbours. Equally as fantastic is Modern Organic (modernorganic.com.au), which is our go-to for breakfast. Bonus points as there’s a tranquil courtyard out the back.
The menu is absolutely packed with vegan and vegetarian options. A favourite has to be the buddha bowl with added poached eggs. We’re talking pan-seared quinoa and vegetables, sumac spiced cherry tomato and cucumber salad, kale chips, tahini dip, and pomegranate seeds. Truthfully, is it a healthy eat if it doesn’t include good-old pomegranate seeds?
OK, moving onto lunch. And it’s a no brainer. It has to be Common Ground Canteen and Kitchen (thisiscommonground.com.au). Here you’ll find food that’s so outrageously fresh you’re left wondering if there’s a farm right behind the building. It’s all down to the duo behind this eatery, Nic Barrett and Kath Austen, who are incredibly passionate about locallysourced produce. The salmon poke is created with care, but we usually go for the mung bean burger. After all, who says healthy always has to be a salad? We like to focus on fresh being best.
For dinner, we’re heading over to Yasaka Japanese Dining (328 The Entrance Rd), a new Japanese joint that opened in October last year. Here you’ll find some of the freshest sushi on the Coast, and they even do kids boxes if your wildlings are into sushi rolls. But a head’s up, the menu is usually limited as the owners only offer what is fresh that day.

It’s Time To Play First up, it has to be a bike ride or walk along the Long Jetty Foreshore. There’s something incredibly soothing about this stretch, with its bushmeets-water vista. In total, the track is 12 kilometres going up to The Entrance or around towards Chittaway Bay. Whichever direction you choose, there are plenty of picnic spots, playgrounds and pee pit stops. The three important ps. And now it’s time to stretch it out at one of the many yoga classes available. All classes are pretty amazing in the area but we like Compass Pilates, where the owner Robyn is brilliant, no matter if you’re a newbie or wellseasoned. (compasspilates.com.au)
We know that shopping is a great form of exercise and Long Jetty has all the spoils. We always start at Long Jetty Vintage (298 The Entrance Rd), which is packed with some of the best vintage clothes you’ll find in our region. We then work our way down, popping into every shop before arriving at Mowgli Studio (1/384 The Entrance Rd), where you’ll find handcrafted plant pots. Oh, and for everything woo woo, then Totally Active Healing Centre (312A The Entrance Rd) has you covered. Then, after all the healthy eats, exercise, yoga and shopping, take a moment to enjoy a total rub down at the Avani Women's Bodywork (399405 The Entrance Rd). You deserve it.

Copacabana by @fromabove.images
OK, if you’re going to tackle the full walk, which is 10km from Macmasters all the way to Terrigal, then you’ll need to be relatively fit. But beauty rewards brawn here, as this walk - connecting the five seaside villages of Macmasters, Copa, Avoca, North Avoca and Terrigal - is picture perfect, with ocean views punctuated by intersections of deep bush. Kicking off at Macs, you walk along the beach to Copacabana, and we highly recommend using Burnt Honey Bakery in Copa as a pitstop.

Then walk up Del Monte Place to the Captain Cook Lookout. A great spot to catch your breath, as the views are incredible. But then off you go again and whip through the bush before arriving in Avoca. Follow the sign to the stairs that take you right down to the beach and walk along the shoreline until you get to North Avoca. You’ve nearly made it. Now, it’s time to walk up past North Avoca Surf Club and over the hill into Terrigal, where you’ve earned yourself a swim for sure.

Star 104.5’s breakfast host Sarah Forster discovers the healing power of yoga with this issue’s hidden hero, Jeannie Solar from The Yoga Collective
Jeannie with Sarah. Image by Oak Street Images
Jeannie Solar is a firm believer in the healing power of yoga - for the mind and body. She even credits her daily practice with helping her overcome three major health battles. The owner of The Yoga Collective in Erina runs her studio as a community-based environment, with a focus on giving back. “Yoga helps you through so many things in your life. It isn’t just a way to get fit and flexible and wear cool tights - although, that is part of it,” she laughs.
Jeannie’s yogi journey began as a child, when her mum encouraged her to start her practice after undergoing heart surgery at the age of 12. “I became very thin, very weak. I didn’t have much strength. Yoga was my way of recovering,” she recalls. From there, a life-long dedication to yoga was born. However, her calling to become a yoga teacher would have to wait. First, Jeannie filled two decades of her life working as a DJ, touring all corners of the globe. But even during this time she practised yoga daily. “Yoga was the thing in my back pocket, my secret weapon. It kept me grounded,” she says. In 2016, she made the decision to step out of the fast lane of globetrotting and focus fully on yoga. “I decided I had to dedicate myself to yoga. I knew it was time to start sharing what I had in my heart,” she explains. Jeannie became a yoga instructor and started teaching classes in Terrigal, before moving to Erina late last year. But as her full-time yoga career was taking off, Jeannie was hit with another major health battle. This time with Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid. She experienced dramatic weight loss, energy loss and pain. If that wasn’t enough, Jeannie was then involved in a serious car accident.
With multiple fractures, including to her pelvis and ribs, as well as bulging discs and severe whiplash, she found herself almost unable to move and struggling to accept the changes to her body and lifestyle. Jeannie credits yoga with helping her cope and believes the experience has helped her connect with her students on a deeper level. “Our physical bodies are going to change. We are going to get older. We might have injury. We might have something that impacts on our physical practice and if that comes, which it did for me, we need a way to deal with it,” she explains. For Jeannie and The Yoga Collective, community is everything. And she loves to give back. In the studio, you can buy a clutch purse made by women fleeing sex trafficking; the profits help those women save money to start a new life. And over Christmas, Jeannie collected donations for Coast Shelter. The studio also runs movie nights and music sessions. Jeannie strongly believes there’s something for everyone in yoga and is doing all she can to spread the word. “It’s almost like an ancient form of psychology,” she says.

Run by Mick and Belinda Ostini, there are over 75 classes available, a creche, cafe and enviable weights room. Oh, and Coasties Card members get 40% off joining fees. Winning! (impactc.me)
Belle Movement, Ettalong This might be one of the least cliquey boutique yoga spaces on the Coast, with the team offering reformer, pilates and stretch, in standard classes, private lessons, and even 15-minute quickie classes to suit even the busiest of mums. The perfect all-rounder, the space is pretty as a picture. (bellemovement.com)
Landete Health, Erina Landete Health is all about ensuring everyone who walks through the door gets as much out of their workout as possible. Les Landete is at the helm and sees the gym as more of a personal training space. He hopes to help everyone, from the gainchasers to mums getting back into check, hit their individual health and fitness goals. (landetehealth.com.au)

the juice boss
Inner Glow Goodness was the success story of 2020. We meet the woman behind the business
It all started as a side hustle for Tira MacGregor. A friend was selling her juice company and Tira, a full-time make-up artist, jumped at the opportunity of a sweet second income. And for the first year, that’s exactly how Inner Glow Goodness, a cold-press juice created right here on the Central Coast, worked out. Then 2020 hit.
“It kind of exploded,” she laughs. “We’re the only cold-pressed juice company on the Coast that delivers. And suddenly, when everyone went into lockdown in March, our sales kind of tripled overnight. And since then, it hasn’t really stopped. It’s been amazing, and also kind of exhausting as I’m now trying to do two full-time jobs.”
G et 1 5 % o ff cleans es with your Coastie s C a rd
Or, more realistically, three full-time roles, as she is also mum to her 11-year-old son, Luca, alongside her husband, Jamie, with the family living in Copacabana. “Life is definitely very busy,” she explains. But for Tira, the dream has always been to work within the health and wellness industry. She is beyond passionate about the healing power of food, and believes that in-season, fresh produce is at the core of a healthy lifestyle. “Growing up, my parents were hippies and we lived off the grid just outside Cairns,” she explains. “We had no electricity. But we were at one with the earth and the food we cooked was wholesome and just so good for you. That message really underpins what Inner Glow Goodness is all about.”
And while you can simply enjoy the freshly-made juices, delivered straight to your door, it’s the juice cleanses which are the bestsellers. And it’s perhaps no surprise as Tira is meticulous about each juice giving all the nutrients needed for the day, working with health professionals to ensure that each cleanse is nothing short of, well, perfect. The business is growing, too. In November, Innerglow Kiosk, a walkin juice-bar-come-cafe opened in Ettalong. “It was always the dream to have a cafe offering the freshest salads and all our juices. And it’s given us the chance to really connect with the community,” Tira says. Inner Glow Goodness Shop 366 Ocean View Road, Ettalong. (innerglowgoodness-com-au.myshopify.com)

w o l s t i e tak Slow Coaching Co.’s Nikki Tiedeman went from a high-pressure corporate job to helping the busiest people in business to slow down. Want to feel less zapped and more focused in 2021? Here are her four top tips to finding your perfect pace
DITCH THE PHONE
REST EVERY DAY
Are you guilty of a roll and scroll as soon as you wake? Well, for 2021, how about spending the first eight minutes of your day phone free? It’ll make a massive difference. Seriously, stress levels plummet.
It’s not always easy, but if we all took five or 10 minutes out of our day to take a deep breath and clear our thoughts, we would be so much more productive. Tip: Put a daily diary entry in so you always do it.
START SAYING NO
BECOME MINDFUL
Guilty of being a bit of a people pleaser? Well, you’re not alone. But saying ‘yes’ constantly means you’ll likely be taking on too much. Unlock the power of “no” this year and enjoy all the extra me time.
Every day Nikki runs a sunrise mindfulness class on the beach in Wamberal. It’s an introduction to the power of living in the now. To join or find out more, visit slowcoachingco.com
BEAUTY HONESTY BOX THE TREATMENT
DOES IT HURT?
Cosmetic acupuncture.
Big call, but it was the most relaxing experience ever, especially when the needles are taken out and your face is massaged with sweet-smelling facial oils.
WHAT IS IT? In short, facial acupuncture is a natural alternative to Botox. It stimulates the muscles to improve the appearance of fine lines.
WHO IS IT FOR? Really, anyone who is feeling like they’re wanting a freshen up, but who doesn’t want to go down the injectables route. Or have already, but are looking for an alternative.
DOES IT WORK? We were told it takes a few sessions, so we were surprised to come away with a noticeably dewier and brighter complexion after one session. A success! We had cosmetic acupuncture at Eunoia Acupuncture in Erina. (eunoiaacupuncture.com.au)
Local Favourites
Mum-of-one Donna Minton works as an events and promotion manager at Star 104.5 and has lived in Budgewoi with her husband Brendan and daughter Zara for the past three years. Here she shares her ’hood’s best bits Eat The Budgewoi Corner Store was taken over earlier this year by Nicole. She’s beyond generous with her serving sizes. Try the BLT! Also, make sure to grab some lollies from her lolly bar (I can vouch for the sour strawberry fizzers). There are delicious cupcakes made fresh each morning, too. A no brainer!
Drink My two favourite coffee spots are The Anchor Budgewoi and Village Cafe Noraville. Great with the fam. Then afternoon drinks sitting on the balcony at Dunes by Dish, Soldiers Beach. You could be forgiven for thinking you are on holidays. Play Beach wise, we are spoilt for choice, with Budgewoi, Lakes, Pebblys and, of course, the Norah Head Rockpool. They’re all great spots to spend your weekends. Canton Beach Foreshore Playground is such a perfect little playground to wear your kids out.
