G’DAY Every year, something quite magical happens from May until November. Yep, I’m talking about the migration of around 30,000 humpback whales that glide through our waters, making their annual 5,000 kilometre journey from Antarctica to Queensland, where they then mate and give birth. And as these magnificent creatures are the stars of our region for the next few months, it’s a no brainer that one of these incredible giants and her babe, captured perfectly by local drone photographer Rhys Jones (@rhysdrones), should be our cover. Inside this issue, our sixth, you’ll notice we focus a lot on the natural wonders of the Coast and ways to keep its true beauty alive and kicking. We’ve handpicked eateries with an eye on sustainability, local businesses that help and heal, and a chat with the CEO of Coast-born organisation Take 3, which has raised awareness of the devastating affects of plastics on our oceans - and not just in our region, but also globally. Food You just never know what’s going to be pulled from the oven. On our visit, petite quiches with bitter chunks of feta and sweet pumpkin are placed on the counter, still pipping hot. Everything is made onsite daily, with in-season produce and herbs picked from their very own garden. Drinks Quality coffee is the beating heart of this Avoca institution. It’s what inspired the cafe’s impressive milk bottle art installation that weaves around the ceiling.

It’s all in the title here: A “wholefood cafe”. Every dish is teeming with high-quality healthy ingredients. The lentil burger is taken to another level with cashew cream that works as a ‘good-foryou’ alternative to mayonnaise and ensures the dish is vegan. We’re also fond of the veggie stack topped with goat’s cheese and available on gluten-free bread. A delight.

For those looking for a cafe that’s never going to give you an eye roll when you ask about glutenfree and vegan options, then this is it. The Three Donkeys has tailor-made its menu so that each dish can be tweaked to suit your dietary needs. And when you’ve finished, head next door to the adjoining homewares store. So many pretty things.

Ken’s Humble Pie Shop, The Entrance

In April, Ken’s Humble Pie Shop was awarded the title of NSW’s best bakery. And while you won’t hear Ken or the team shouting about it (they’re humble like that), allow us to do it for them. There’s no better meat pie on the Coast. Every flavour is a winner and completely comforting. Top tip: don’t overlook the profiteroles. Absolutely outstanding. (32 Coral St, The Entrance)

For the meatiest sausage roll in town, then it has to be a visit to Saddles. They are hefty in size, packed with flavour and can be enjoyed with a takeout coffee as you sit by the pretty-as-a-picture lake at the front of the expansive (and fancy) Mount White property. And you thought it was just slick inrestaurant fare served here. (20 Ashbrookes Rd, Mount White)

Bamboo Buddha, Holgate Nestled in a rainforest in the backroads of Holgate is one of our region’s most unique eateries Bamboo Buddha. Here you’ll find soul-warming feeds and great coffee all set within a Balinesestyle garden. We always go for the Buddha burger, but for a true winter warmer there’s also a delightfully creamy vegetable curry. This is the perfect spot for vegetarians and vegans. Innerglow Kiosk, Ettalong Yep, it’s better known for its health offering, with fresh juices and salads made on-site every day. But to warm your soul, it has to be the cheese toastie. Crunchy buttery bread, gooey rich cheese and pops of sweetness from the cherry tomatoes, all pulled together with a sweet relish. Sweetbabyjesus. You’ll be coming back for more and more. The Lucky Bee, Hardys Bay

South End Social, Gosford

A pie filled with massaman curry. This is not a drill. This absolute game changer of a dish is the creation of Matty B, chef and coowner of The Lucky Bee. The pastry is the perfect mix of crispy and flaky, the massaman rich and slightly sweet, and the meat falls apart, just like it should. The only question we have is: why didn’t anyone think of this collab before? (60 Araluen Dr, Hardys Bay)

Hands up if you like a big heaving sandwich filled with dripping strips of steak, accompanied by crisp fries and large glass of hearty Argentinian Malbec? Ah, you are our people. And the best you’ll find on the Coast is at South End Social in good ol’ Gossy. Don’t forget to book as this place gets busy - and for good reason. The atmosphere is still one of our faves. Avoca Beach Seafoods, Avoca Grab a hoodie, a nice cold beer and head to the beach with an awardwinning bag of fish and chips from Avoca Beach Seafoods. This is one of our favourite Friday night things to do on the Coast. And in the winter months, there’s a real community feel during sundowners on the beach. Insider tip: order a few of the deep-fried mussels. Tremendous. (1/85 Avoca Dr, Avoca Beach)

Sweet Caroline, East Gosford Nonna’s baked eggs at Sweet Caroline are seriously authentic. The recipe has been handed down to the owner, Tony, from his own nonna. And the result? A rich tomato sauce, perfectly cooked eggs and shavings of parmesan, all served with crispy sourdough. It doesn’t get more comforting than that, does it? Oh, and the coffee here is also spot on. Has Toukley’s time finally arrived? We think so

It’s long been believed that there’s one single signifier when it comes to a neighbourhood tipping into the cool: the arrival of a trendy cafe or restaurant. Or in the case of Toukley, the signifier has been the arrival of many.

By early 2021, Toukley’s status of most exciting destination in our region was cemented. The Beachie opened its doors, showcasing a multi-million dollar eat, drink and play spot that the northern reaches was more than ready for.

Rise Mofo got in early, opening its bright yellow hole-in-the-wall coffee space back in late 2019. Then came Fade Nation, a trendy barbers with on-site cafe in early 2020, quickly followed by the slick Mexican eatery Mexicoast Cantina.

Feeling dubious? We’ll back it up with this... In May, Toukley was even named Small Tourism Town finalist at the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards for 2021. Like we said, Toukley’s got it going on. And here’s your ultimate guide to its best bits.

Let’s Eat & Drink OK, let’s talk Rise Mofo again. You’ll find it right at the top of Main Road, just before it dips into Noraville, the next neighbourhood over. You can’t miss this trendy little hole-in-thewall as it’s bright yellow with an incredible mural down its side. What’s on offer? Superior coffee, bulging bacon and egg rolls and a selection of sweet treats. It’s really a grab-and-go spot as there's limited seating outside is hot property. Wander a little further down Main Road and you’ll also stumble across Toukley’s newest addition, a coffee van called BlackFin Espresso. Opening in late April, this little coffee pod on wheels packs a punch when it comes to its caffeine offering. There are also delicious bakery items and a mean avo on toast available. And plenty of outdoor seating.

Now, if you’re looking for a sit-down breakie then it has to be Fade Nation, also on Main Road. Try the shakshuka with its smoked tomatoes, five beans and baked eggs arriving with crunchy sourdough. Delicious. There are also fresh juices made on site, smoothies and iced coffees. It’s a win. For lunch, it’s a no brainer. It’s time to test your midday drinking skills at The Beachie. The menu is expansive, the drinks flowing and the vibe is buzzing. And it’s kid friendly with an on-site petting farm allowing you to chow down (or more importantly, sip) in peace. Then for dinner, head over to Mexicoast Cantina where the service is friendly and the cocktails deliciously dangerous. Try the steak fajitas. Enough to feed a village.

Let’s Play Conscious shopping is something we should all get behind and no one does it better on the Coast than Coastal Chill (366 Main Rd). Inside you’ll find everything from children’s clothes to soaps and plants. But what unites each item is a story. The plant boxes are created by a former engineer who lost his eyesight. He makes them purely by feel. And they’re flawless. The baby clothes are hand knitted by a local trying to support her husband who is currently on dialysis. Another spot that has its eye firmly on offering more than just a spot to shop is Luna & Co (2/317 Main Road East). There are crystals, jewellery and homewares, and also a focus on wellness with in-house massage, therapy, life coaching and workshops and retreats, too. Now, there is life off Main Road. Head to Canton Beach for a walk along the waterfront. There’s a playground here for littlies and it’s also a great place to watch the sun set. Grab a spot on the grass, take a nice bottle of wine and treat yourself to some fish and chips (or even oysters) from the nearby Beach Parade Seafood & Takeaway (1/16 Beach Parade). Bindi & Minka's doggy picks Massage therapy for dogs? Insta-famous @bindi_and_minka have got the insider info on why it’s more than pet pampering

A massage for dogs? You heard us right. But a rub down isn’t purely for pooch pampering. It actually helps with a dog’s overall wellness. Coastie Leigh Hogan fused her love of dogs with her expertise in remedial massage when her dog Shelby needed massage to supplement her recovery from an injury. Flashforward to today and she’s since set up Human and Hound and is now the leading doggie masseuse on the Coast. From anxiety to injury, Leigh helps pooches get back on track. But for her, it has to be a holistic approach. She considers diet and environmental factors, as well as working with a vet.

And luckily for us four-legged pooches, she’s on hand to help owners with tips on how to boost wellbeing at home. Her top tip is to take the time to sit with your dog, run your hands through their fur, and gently massage around their neck and shoulders. And it’s proven that this can even be beneficial for dog owners’ wellbeing, too. And owners don’t have to miss out on the massage either. In the history of mankind, never has a boardwalk caused so much feather ruffling. But alas, Terrigal Boardwalk has opened and whether you are #teamyay or #teamnaynay due to the cost, let’s all be in agreement that it is making the walk from one end of Terrigal over to the Haven a hell of a lot more pleasant. So pleasant, in fact, that we’ve handpicked it as this issue’s spotlighted walk. Grab your Terrigal-inspired tight Lycra and let’s get moving... We like to kick off at the far end of the Terrigal Esplanade, parking opposite Bellyfish, The Captain’s Cafe and the like; close to the Wamberal end.

Once on the esplanade, it’s an easy route to follow. You just stick to the path until you make your way over to the Haven. It should only take you 20 minutes. But don’t think your walk is over once you’ve arrived. Keep walking along the cliff’s edge and make your way to The Skillion (the highest peak). Once you’ve climbed to the top, truly working your glutes, you’ll have reached the best vantage point for some whale watching. For the next few months our waters will be filled with those mesmerising sea giants, so keep your peepers peeled. Once spotted, loop back, and treat yourself to a well deserved lunch.

The Skillion, Terrigal

Norah Head Lighthouse

Whale watching in Terrigal is a must-do during the migration season. The Skillion is the steepest hill found at Terrigal, so if whales are in the area, you’ll definitely see them from up here.

This is an iconic Central Coast landmark with the best views of the ocean. Walk down from the lighthouse onto the rock shelf where you can walk all the way back to Norah Head rockpool.

Captain Cook Lookout, Copacabana

Crackneck Point Lookout

While it’s a bit of a trek to Captain Cook Lookout, it’s one of the best vantage points to watch whales on the Coast. Here you’ll be able to look out over the ocean all the way to Terrigal, through Avoca and down to Macmasters.

Found in Wyrrabalong National Park, uninterrupted views of the waters and several picnic tables and benches are available. Grab yourself a delicious lunch to-go from nearby Cafe Mocha (1/103 Bateau Bay Rd, Bateau Bay).

Marine Discovery AMY NELMES BISSETT

You’ve probably walked past it a million times, usually while heading into its neighbouring park and coffee spot, Park Life. But it’s time to stop trying to peek through the windows of the Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre (CCMDC) and step inside. Once inside, a guide will explain each species and how their unique features help them to survive and thrive in our coastal waters. It’s a super immersive experience, with children getting to handle shark eggs and shells, and maybe even feed the fish. As you move through the centre, each exhibit offers an incredible insight into the marine environment where many of the 600 species call home. Our personal favourite is the whale bones, putting into perspective how big these water giants really are, and the importance of educating everyone about protecting and exploring the Central Coast’s marine environment. For the younger children there is the Activities Room and the infamous Treasure Hunt, while the adults can uncover the Wonders of the Wreck with a dive experience around the wreck of HMAS Adelaide and Australia’s Marine Heritage.

You know those gorgeous, handdecorated gingerbread biscuits adorning cafe countertops across the Coast? They’re Adri’s.

Confession. It wasn’t that long ago I thought I wasn’t cool enough to wear Drøm. That was until I got to know owners Gary and Sheryle Berman, the down-to-earth husband and wife team behind The Coast’s own brand. They launched Drøm as a proud Central Coast surf and streetwear label, for all Coasties.

Owner Adrianna started her business from the humblest of beginnings. A stay-at-home mum, she had the aim of making $20 a week to pay for her coffees. If I’m buying a sweet treat for the kids, Adri’s is top of the list. Not only are the biscuits delicious and beautiful, but I know they’re made with love and real ingredients. (adrisgingerbread.com)

Phoenix Pilates When I walked into the Phoenix Pilates studio for the first time, I knew I had found my place. Owner and instructor Liz Chamas is as real and nonjudgemental as you get. And super smart when it comes to how our bodies work. I can’t count the number of times I’ve limped into a class nursing an injury and bounced out feeling like a million bucks. Forget the pressure of Instaworthy outfits and nailing the yummy mummy look. This place is for real bodies and genuinely feeling good. I know I’m showing my age when I say grocery shopping on a Sunday is one of my favourite things to do. There’s something about topping up the fridge and pantry with beautiful, delicious food that makes me feel like I can take on the week ahead with confidence. And Fresko’s is the place to do it.

A charity run by locals for locals. Did you know one-in-six kids right here on the Central Coast lives in poverty? It’s a shockingly sad statistic. We Care Connect exists to make sure those kids aren’t forgotten. But they need our help! Donations of pre-loved or new items for children aged from newborn right up to teens are always needed. I’m talking clothes, shoes, bedding, furniture, books and toys.

The owners are locals who support locals, stocking as much Central Coast grown produce as possible. And did I mention the fully stocked deli, juice bar and cafe? Another thing to love about this family-run business is that it’s plastic bag free. But you’ll never be left juggling your apples out of the store if you forget to BYO. Coast-born organisation Take 3 can be credited with changing the world’s attitude to plastic. Coasties meets the woman leading the charge ISOBEL GOODWIN-MOORE

She’s behind some of the world’s most cutting-edge documentaries, dedicating three decades to film and production, but in March 2020, Sarah Beard found herself accepting a different kind of job in a completely different industry the role as CEO of Central Coast grassroots conservation organisation Take 3 For The Sea.

“I’d never envisaged that I’d be walking away from a 30-year career in film and production,” says Sarah. “But I’ve always been passionate about marine conservation and antipollution, so it was a no brainer.” Since 2010, the Coast organisation has been leading the charge in raising awareness to the damaging

effects of plastic on our marine environment. Originally set up by marine ecologist, Roberta Dixon-Valk, youth educator, Amanda Marechal and environmentalist, Tim Silverwood, the trio urged our nation to take three pieces of rubbish away with them every time they visited a beach. A simple act that has a huge impact. At present, researchers say that by 2050, there’ll be more plastic than fish in our oceans unless we change our ways. It was during Sarah’s work in film, travelling the world, where she first realised the huge problem. “It’s something I couldn’t walk away from,” she explains, saying that in 2013 she joined Take 3 as a volunteer. Five years later, she worked as a producer on the award-winning documentary Blue (2017), which delved into the ‘hidden crisis’ of plastics killing marine life. When Take 3 approached her and asked her to become CEO in 2020, it was something she couldn’t say no to. And now, well into the role, Sarah plans to keep storytelling at the core of her work. “Storytelling will always be a big part of whatever I do. It’s beneficial in the direction we’re taking Take 3,” she tells Coasties. On top of being CEO, Sarah is also a mum of two teenage boys, who are now 15-years-old and 18. “I think I’ve got a pretty good balance,” says Sarah. “I have my family fully supportive of what I’m doing.”

Sarah has big ideas for Take 3 and its place on the Coast, the rest of Australia, and over into international borders. She’s heavily influenced by the likes of Jane Goodall, Valerie Taylor and Sylvia Earle. “If I could get to the end of my days and [have] had the impact that they’ve had, then I would have lived a good life,” she explains of her drive. Sarah encourages everyone to participate to tackle the pollution crisis, “It’s going to take all of us. Parenting is messy. There’s no manual on how it should be done and we all have to find out own way and muddle through. Drink A cold beer on a sunny day at The Sunken Monkey Hotel is always a winner, and it’s actually really good for kids in there. It has one of the best kids menus on the Coast, I think. Also, for cocktails, we’ve our eye on the New York Pizza Bar and Grill once we’re out of the new baby stage.

Eat My two favourite cafes have to be Glee Coffee Roasters and Cheeky Charlie’s. I’m a coffee fanatic and they’re always consistently fantastic. I also love the poached eggs with avo and halloumi at Charlie’s. It’s a slight obsession of mine. We don’t go out that often in the evenings now we’ve got a newborn, but we do love a takeaway, especially from the new Mumma Clucka.

Play The new playground at The Tame Fox is perfect for kids and they have some excellent raw treats. We also love The Hive in Erina for its playground. And on a rainy day, we go to Impact Kidsworld Play Centre. It’s a bit of a hidden gem as it’s never too busy, like other soft plays in the area, and they do an awesome cheese toastie and the coffee also really isn’t too bad.
