Council recognizes employees, announces new police chief BY DALE MYERS
Accolades abounded at the July 27 Carpinteria City Council meeting. The council presented a plethora of awards to various city employees for their years of service and presented Catholic Charities the Outstanding Community Partner award. Accepting on behalf of Catholic Charities was Brian Clark, regional coordinator. “It really is a community effort (in Carpinteria),” said Clark. “It feels like neighbor helping neighbor down here.” On another note, Lieutenant Brad McVay of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, who is the police chief in Carpinteria, announced his retirement effective Aug. 16. McVay also introduced his replacement, Lt. Mike Perkins, who has worked on and off in Carpinteria since 1992, the year law enforcement services for the City of Carpinteria were contracted to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s office. “A lot of my career was in this area (Carpinteria).
I was actually one of the first eight deputies that got deployed down to this station when we took the contract over in 1992,” said Perkins. “The bulk of my patrol experience has been out of the Carpinteria station.” In administrative matters, the council voted unanimously in favor (with Councilman Wade Nomura recusing himself and Councilman Al Clark absent) of amending zoning of the Carpinteria Municipal Code and Local Coastal Program creating a transportation corridor wetland overlay district and a Whitney site agricultural overlay district and removing zoning from a portion of the site. This item follows the June 22 council hearing in which it considered the Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road interchanges and Via Real extension item. The council adopted a resolution that evening and recommended approval of Local

Last member of the original Carpinteria City Council passes away
Robert “Olly” Olivas, the last living original Carpinteria City Councimember, passed away on July 17 in Norman, Okla. Olivas, who was 91 when he died, was elected to the first Carpinteria City Council when the city incorporated in 1965 and served on the council until 1971. He moved from Carpinteria to Washington D.C., and then in 1976 he and his wife, Betty, moved to Norman, where he also served on the city council. During his years in Carpinteria, he ran an auto body shop and worked as a firefighter. His wife survives him.

Tony’s building sells for top dollar
After more than a half century of dishing up homestyle Italian meals, Tony’s Pizza and Pastaria closed earlier this summer, and the sale of the Borrello family-owned building was finalized recently. A local investor purchased the 3,000 square foot building, located at 699 Linden Ave., which is now up for lease. The building’s closing price has not been disclosed, but according to Hayes Commercial Group, which represented the buyer, the sale fetched the highest price per square foot on record for a retail building in Carpinteria.

The artist’s way Art-niture event wraps up Aug. 7
A fusion of furniture and fine art has made a temporary home at Carpinteria Arts Center for the fifth annual Artniture event. Creatively decorated chairs, tables and more are in search of forever homes, and their sales will benefit the nonprofit dedicated to promoting the arts in Carpinteria. The auction style event is open now and bidding will conclude on Friday, Aug. 7 with a celebration from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the arts center, 855 Linden Ave. The Rincons will perform for the event, and food from Señor Frogs and wine from The Carpinteria Wine Company will be served. Coastal View News gives readers a taste of what’s waiting for their bids.
“Carpinteria Herald Tables” By John Wullbrandt
“Celebrating Carpinteria’s Golden Jubilee, I created four “Carpinteria Herald Tables.” During the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s my dad (and City Councilman for 28 years) Ernie Wullbrandt, had saved many issues of the Carpinteria Herald newspaper, predecessor to Coastal View News. The articles and advertising in these old publications revealed much about how our way of life has changed and yet so much has remained familiar, even cherished, by many Carpinterians today. With four orphaned coffee tables and a bucket of wall paper adhesive, I went to work gluing bits of our city’s past in random order and resulting in heavily varnished keepsakes marking our city’s 50th birthday.”
Studio B wins big at Showstopper competition
“Musical Chair” By Lysbeth Chuck
“Believe it or not, the idea for the piece actually came to me and my friend Zelda Prune at Angels Antiques, simultaneously. We were looking through some of their merchandise for an Art-niture candidate and both spotted this little chair—which I believe used to be called a telephone chair—at the same time. Then we said “musical chairs” at exactly the same time in exactly the same tone and at exactly the same volume. For some reason, it cracked us up. Zelda was holding the black and orange sheet music that you see on top of the piano (we had been looking through some old music files), and while we were laughing a little breeze took the music out of her hand and blew it onto the chair. That was enough for me—Musical Chairs it was. We still crack up whenever we see that chair.”

“Mod Pod”
By Mike Millan and Stuart Carey “I must thank Geri Campopiano of the Carpinteria Arts Center for making the match, as it was she who let me know that Mike Millan had donated a piece. As for my own process, I fell in love with it as soon as I laid eyes on it. I thought it very unique and a great object on which to paint. I didn’t work on it right away because I wasn’t sure what to do. However, once I started, it seemed to paint itself and come to life. I used oil on an acrylic base for the top of the piece, the image of which is infused with elements of jazz—rhythm, texture and improvisation within a framework. The legs took on a jungle theme. I coated the whole thing with an epoxy to both bring out the vivid colors while at the same time providing a protective cover. Hence, the “Mod Pod” was born!” ––Stuart Carey
“Southern Steelhead Trout in Blue” By Kim Snyder
“I have had an interest in the southern steelhead trout since I moved to the Santa Barbara area in the late 1970s. I was given a pretty little table that I could paint for the fifth annual “FUN”raiser Art-niture. With the steelhead in mind and my love of blue, I began painting table “Southern Steelhead Trout in Blue” by sanding, priming and then arranging the trout. I hope the viewers of the table get a smile think of our local southern steelhead.”
Carey paintings placed at Seven
WhirlYgYgs, a collection of vibrant new paintings by artist Stuart Carey, will hit the wall at Seven restaurant at 224 helena Street in Santa barbara on Aug. 3. A reception for the show will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. Carey, who has his studio and residence at palm Loft Gallery in Carpinteria, paints vivid images infused with elements of jazz and its improvised rhythm, texture and structure. According to Carey’s artist statement, his work reflects his perception of the world as dynamic energy and color that is in constant motion, hence the title, WhirlYgYgs. his work has shown all over Santa barbara, in british Columbia and in private collections across the united States. Carey also expresses his creativity as a singer, actor, dancer and choreographer in professional theater. For more information, visit stucarey.com.

Eugene “Geno” Bonior
Eugene “Geno” Bonior passed away at the age of 93 in Seattle, Wash., where he resided for the past 22 years with his daughter and her family. In 1962, he transferred his family from Chicago to Carpinteria to work for Infrared Industries. After leaving Infrared, he opened up Geno’s Kitchen (now Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) in Montecito, a quaint, greasy-spoon diner that he ran from the early-70’s to the mid80’s, which was the highlight of his career. He reminisced fondly about his employees and customers even years later. He served in the Coast Guard in World War II, was an avid baseball fan and loved bigband music. He is survived by his son, Tom; daughter, Carrie; grandchildren, Jillian and Elliot Bonior and Samantha and Scott Edwards.

City offers superb animal services
I read with disappointment the letter last week from Dave Morris “County animal services trump city’s.” I have been active in Carpinteria Valley and Santa Barbara animal care and control for over 24 years. I have provided hundreds and hundreds of hours of low cost veterinary services to virtually every private and civic organization in the area, including the County of Santa Barbara. Eight years ago, after the county suddenly demanded an exorbitant fee for services, I contracted with the City of Carpinteria to provide facilities and low cost veterinary services in order to help them establish an independent animal control. Since that time the city has provided for the medical needs and has found homes for all adoptable animals except for the three dogs currently in foster care and looking for homes. For Morris to describe our efforts as “a disaster” and “dysfunctional” and to compare us unfavorably to the Santa Barbara County Animal Control, which is currently under review by the County Board of Supervisors due to their poor performance in an independent audit by the American Humane Association, is as insulting as it is inaccurate. In fairness to the county, the challenges they face are massive, but I am proud of the job we have done and the efforts of the city, my staff and our volunteers. I have worked with Morris for years and know him to be compassionate, caring and committed. I have also found that he does not deal well with those who disagree with his vision. The truth is, we are all caring, compassionate people, struggling to do a difficult and vexing job with limited resources. It is a situation that cries out for cooperation, compromise and flexibility, not insults and vitriol.

One might wonder what there is to gain by Coastal View News putting a picture of former Carpinteria City Councilman Joe Armendariz as its “center fold” in the pages celebrating “Carpinteria’s Fifth Decade.” How low this publication has sunk in trying to, again, focus on a man’s mistakes. In my eyes, you have joined the ranks of other sleazy publications for the sole benefit of readers’ entertainment over the back of another human being. So Armendariz made mistakes. But don’t we all? Isn’t that what life is all about: living and learning? Venoco should swap oil for water
What’s going on at the Venoco property on Dump Road? Could they be installing solar panels and wind turbines to provide power for a new seawater desalinization project? Is it possible to convert the existing Venoco facility into a desalinization plant converting millions of gallons of seawater into potable water? Everything is there that is required for such an undertaking. All that is missing is a complete change of moral responsibility by Venoco leadership to undertake such an incredibly worthwhile project. You can’t drink oil, and with their operations basically shut down because of the oil pipeline spill disaster at Gaviota this could be the incentive Venoco needs to convert from producing toxic fossil fuel to production of renewable energy or desalinization. This oil company is well aware that Saudi Arabia is flooding the world with cheap oil. Their goal is to put small and medium sized companies like Venoco out of business worldwide and become a major source of oil for the world. This is a high stakes game for the Saudis, and they have billions in reserve to outlast most of the competition. When the sanctions on Iranian oil are relaxed, they too will begin to flood the world with cheap oil, and for Venoco to remain profitable the price of a barrel of oil must be much higher than it presently is. There have been several articles written recently about life without Big Oil in Santa Barbara County, and regardless of what the oil companies say, we can survive without them. The dirty and viscous oil produced here is simply not needed as it can readily be replaced with renewable energy. Finally, that Venoco has avoided a major oil spill at its platforms or onshore facilities is miraculous, but a spill is inevitable.

Tanker trains running a mile a minute
The cautions about potential oil tanker trains that I have read in your pages were brought to mind late Saturday evening, July 25. Returning from Ventura at 11 p.m., I was passing under the railroad bridge over Highway 101 just as a train came overhead. I realized it was a lengthy train of tank cars, carrying what, I didn’t know—potentially the crude oil that has been discussed. Would that train be passing through Carpinteria? Within two minutes after I crossed the railroad tracks on Linden Avenue, I heard the train whistle. I walked to the rail crossing and observed the very same train of tank cars rumbling through Carpinteria. Using the time it took me to drive home and the mapped distance from Ventura, I calculated that train was averaging at least 45 mph. It was moving fast coming through Carpinteria at about 11:30 p.m. The train took over one minute to pass the crossing—that works out to a train length of over three-quarters of a mile long. Just imagine if a train that long derailed in our town, spilling crude oil and wrecking nearby buildings. As I have read, the blast zone from a crude oil train crash with fire is a one-mile radius. In other words, everything from the ocean to Via Real. Those trains have the potential to incinerate all of Carpinteria. It already happened in Lac-Megantic, Quebec in 2013, where almost half of the town was destroyed and at least 42 people killed. Keep this in mind when the oil train people, much like the 2014 Measure P opponents, reassure us that everything is safe.

Genuine candidates garner support
I genuinely like Bernie Sanders. He is a self-described Democratic socialist. I won’t vote for him since his views on many issues, including income and wealth inequality, differ considerably from mine. But Sanders clearly articulates his views, doesn’t back down from political confrontation and doesn’t spin words to state what he thinks his audience wants to hear. I would not hesitate to shake his hand and thank him for being a refreshing contrast to many other presidential candidates. And, I genuinely like Donald Trump. Yes, I would vote for him. Like Sanders, he doesn’t hesitate to say what he thinks, and if one looks beyond some of his seemingly brash comments, he is clearly identifying problems that our wonderful country must address. Unlike most of our present day politicians, he understands business and finance. He has built a financial empire, experiencing bankruptcies along the way and using the laws of the land to clearly demonstrate one can become a success after reorganization. Trump believes in operating from strength. He has supported Democratic candidates in the past. Bernie and Don, the political spectrum needs more like you. Bernie, I don’t think you can win, but you have my respect for being clear and precise with your views and for having the guts to take on Hillary. Don, I think it is possible for you to win. Frankly, at this point in time I don’t know if you are the best of the candidates, but you have clearly rattled the timbers of the Republican party. Yes, you’re a bit brash as you sometimes ignore political correctness, but we need that. And you clearly identify issues that others too frequently ignore.

Halos Pitchforks Shantytown
Deputies investigated a report of several men, likely gang members, trespassing in a shed on Concha Loma Drive on July 16. The shed had front and rear entrances so officers manned each side while announcing their presence. Two men surrendered out one door, so both officers pounced, but a third man escaped in the opposite direction. An inspection of the shed turned up a mattress, cell phone and meth pipe. Though the property manager said the men were trespassing; they claimed to be painting. The men, 28 and 33, were arrested for possession of a meth pipe, .2 grams of the drug and trespassing.
Following a hunch
Deputies patrolling a cul du sac on Via Real noticed a man hunched over the steering wheel of a vehicle parked in the red zone at around 6:45 p.m. on July 17. A look inside the vehicle revealed a knife near to where the man’s limp hand rested. Deputies awakened the man and asked if there were any other weapons in the vehicle, and the man said there was a pistol. A deputy found the gun and also noticed a meth pipe and pen tube that was likely used to smoke heroin. The man also admitted to having an unknown drug in his wallet. It was a friend’s, and he was holding onto it, he said, but he didn’t know what it was. Deputies had a hunch that the drug wadded up in tinfoil in the man’s wallet was heroin and arrested the man for possession.

Man in a van
A company contracted to clean up the Refugio oil spill reported that a former employee had stolen a work van on July 21 at 7:57 a.m. Deputies tracked down the man and van at a Carpinteria Avenue motel. There, the man, 40, was standing next his personal vehicle. He said he had realized that the van wasn’t his so he had done the right thing returned it to the motel. Deputies however noticed an aberration jutting out from the man’s gas flap. Flipping open the flap revealed two meth pipes and a marijuana pipe. The vehicle owner said he hadn’t the faintest idea of how all that contraband ended up near the portal to his gas tank. Deputies destroyed the drug paraphernalia and inspected the van to make sure it was in good working order but made no arrests.

Beautiful Carpinteria garden gossip CHRIS & LISA CULLEN I have a soft spot for Carpinteria. I’d rather be here than any other place in the central/south coast. Is it any surprise that we host so many flower growers? It is paradise for nature lovers. The things I love about Carpinteria are too numerous to mention, but I need to mention some of my favorite haunts and favorite people: The Farm Stand, Jill and Jean-Michel at CaliBressan, Bill and Dani at Rose Story Farm, Brent and Suzi at Eye of the Day and of course, Christie and Diana at Porch. Yep, I like living here, love the wide-open spaces, walking the bluffs, the cool ocean breezes and our wonderful small town atmosphere. I’m pretty sure you do too. That’s why you live here! We have had the pleasure of creating some beautiful gardens in our town and I thought, just for the heck of it I’d start a tradition of featuring beautiful Carpinteria gardens from time to time. (If you’d like me to visit your garden, email lisacullen@montecitolandscape.com)
Arriving in paradise
This project was a favorite because the owners love to work in the garden and thus were very involved in the process. They had just moved to our little paradise and were enthralled by the natural beauty of the surroundings. What it really needed was what we call a Garden Edit and a spark of life. And to provide some extra spark we brought in Brent at Eye of the Day Garden Design Center, who helped pick out the perfect

What to do in your garden in August Though it has been a fairly mild summer, we still need rain, and that means it’s still time to mulch. I know I say it every month, but please allow leaves to stay on the ground and replenish mulch regularly. If you have deep mulch and allow the leaves to accumulate, you’ll have fewer weeds. The key to healthy plants is healthy soil. Did you know that living soil needs 50 percent less water? We have had great success with Sacred Cow Biodynamic Compost (I know, love the name). We spread an inch of this magic brew around the base of all of our plants. Specifically, we brought some citrus back within weeks. Water it in well and watch your plants respond. Sacred Cow Compost is available at Island Seed and Feed in Goleta (29 S. Fairview Ave. 967-5262). Request it at your local nurseries. Deadhead flowering plants so they keep on blooming. Roses, ivy geranium, alstroemeria, Shasta daily, dahlias and all other perennials will keep producing all through the year if you pick off spent blooms. Watering tips: Check soil moisture before watering. When you do need to water, let it soak in deeply so you can water less often. You’d be surprised how infrequently plants need water if you deeply mulch and create living soil. This is the time of year to clean out dead brush and weeds around your property. Overgrown areas are subject to fires, so do your clean up now to make your property less susceptible.
A comfortable sitting area draws attention to the purples and green plant palette, as well as the local foothills beyond the house.

Two standout artists will perform this weekend at carpinteria’s Plaza Playhouse Theater. The White Buffalo (aka Jake Smith) takes the stage like a hurricane makes landfall. His songs are authentic, graphic and emotional. Smith’s swirling rhythms and haunting lyrics were featured on TV series “Sons of Anarchy.” The charismatic vocalist’s sold out show takes place on Friday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. The White Buffalo has a big frame, full beard and hair to his shoulders. He looks like a guy who’s lived his dark lyrics. in the song “John Jameson,” he sings “There’s nothing that can lead me to the light, in the darkness of my heart there’s only shame.” looks and lyrics can be deceiving. Offstage, Smith is relaxed and unassuming. There’s no distress. He’s married with a young son and writes most of his songs in his garage. Smith described his “stream of consciousness” technique. “i almost never write songs about a specific subject. I dive in and stuff jumps out spontaneously. i might start to craft a lyric around a phrase. it could become any part of the song. They’re little narratives, sort of short movies. i don’t know where the songs come from. I just hope the ideas won’t stop.” The White Buffalo’s solo set will preview songs from his August cD release. “I’m playing four or five new ones on this tour. i have a couple of songs that actually feel good, including a gospel influenced tune. i still take things to dark places, it’s my style, but this record does more genre jumping than ever before.” On Sunday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m., Americana musician Paul Thorn and his talented band will perform. Thorn’s roots-rock songs jump off the stage. His colorful personal history includes prizefighting. The songwriter once fought world champion boxer roberto Duran on national television. Thorn has released three Billboard charted albums including 2014’s Too Blessed to Be Stressed. The Tupelo, Mississippi native is known for his high energy shows. Tickets for the show are available at onestowatchproductions. com and, if available, at the door.
Brickley
Jake Smith, The White Buffalo, brings his gritty and touching lineup to a sold out crowd at the Plaza Playhouse this weekend. Oscar winning documentary “Searching For Sugar Man.” The film’s title refers to rodriguez’s noted song which was covered by The Dave Mathews Band. rodriguez released two early 1970s albums (cold Fact and coming To reality) and then disappeared from the music scene. He didn’t know his records had become hugely popular in South Africa. The film follows the quest of two capetown fans to find the elusive Detroit musician. Fortyfive years after their release, Rodriguez’s songs still resonate with strong hooks, hip lyrics and unusual arrangements. Purchase screening tickets at plazatheatercarpinteria.com or at the door.
On the record
James Taylor’s 2015 album Before This World is evidence that superb songwriters can’t be rushed. His last record, October road, was released in 2002. Taylor’s new 10-track cD includes a smartly designed photo booklet, song lyrics and a revealing DVD documentary. “This may well be the last of this kind of album with my own material—that i make,” he offers as the film begins. The new record is Taylor’s 16th studio album since 1968 and his first #1 Billboard charted recording. “you don’t get the lighting strikes like you do early on,” Taylor stated, alluding to his early hits singles like “Fire and rain” and “you’ve Got a Friend.” “i think there’s urgency and burning need to get your point across, expressing yourself, getting things out that you can’t stand to contain,” he said. Taylor explains the rudiments of his songwriting process.
“i usually start with a chord progression which suggests a melody or a number of melody lines. if i’m lucky, the melody will somehow be accompanied by a lyrical idea.” Taylor’s songs have always woven subtle metaphors inside complex musical passages. His chords shift and change, sometimes on each word within a lyric. Taylor says he comes back to the same issues over and over again. His familiar themes include a new recovery song, “Watchin’ Over Me.” “That’s the main part of my life. it has to be,” he said, alluding to his past addiction problems. “Angels of Fenway” uses a smooth rhythmic groove to tell a family story about the Boston red Sox. “Far Afghanistan” touches the truth of war as listeners hear the call of the Shehnoi, a Middle-eastern, obo-like instrument. He records in a converted barn located on his farm in Washington, Mass. Taylor’s core musicians and studio producer have worked with him for decades. They include famed cuban-born percussionist luis conte, who owns a vacation home in carpinteria. Guest performers on the new album include Sting singing harmony on the album’s title track and cellist yo-yo Ma providing classical accents. The renowned singer-songwriter reverses field as the documentary ends. “I mentioned that Before This World may be my last album, but i don’t think it is. it’s very gratifying to try this, and find out you can… that when you go to the well, there’s still water.” See markbrickley.com for Brickley’s music articles and photography.

Carpinteria’s n
Coastal View News has packed Carpinteria’s five decades of histo This week, we look into the crystal ball for an educated progno 10 years. Much of what will happen between now and 2025 is pa construction will be a prominent problem of progress; bond m school improvements; and the oft spoken of Carpinteria Coastal Claus Lane to Carpinteria to Rincon Point. Along the way, a new Carpinteria bluffs.
Bluffs hotels
A big question that has come in and out of city development circles over the past handful of years has been how and what to build on the resort-zoned property at the eastern end of Carpinteria Avenue. The property, known as Thunderbowl for the race track that existed there in the 1950s, has had plans pitched for it over the past decade, but nothing has gotten beyond conceptual review. Whether a development plan strikes a chord with city brass over the next decade remains an uncertainty. Previous concepts containing multiple hotel structures, employee housing, a restaurant and convention centers earned tepid receptions from the slow-growth city populace. Still, there might be some sort of resort keeping watch over Rincon Point from Carpinteria’s east end by 2025.
Casitas Pass Road overpass will look a lot more like this by the year 2025.

Freeway widening and new bridges
The size and scope of infrastructure upheaval scheduled for Carpinteria over the next decade is daunting to consider. Two freeway bridges over Carpinteria Creek will be replaced, and the Carpinteria Avenue bridge over Carpinteria Creek is also due for replacement. Bridges over Highway 101 at Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road also have futures of falling before being rebuilt at greater heights and lane widths. Via Real will punch through, connecting the east end to downtown, and five new stoplights will spring up. Ground should break over the next couple of years on the Linden/Casitas Interchange Project and on the Carpinteria Avenue Bridge project. Shortly thereafter, Highway 101 between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara will undergo its fattening, which will include an HOV lane. It’s no secret that traffic between Ventura and Santa Barbara already hits a rush hour snag that has daily commuters tearing at their hair. Construction will only add to congestion.

Cucumber rumble chef randy
The delicious dressing for this salad comes from the juices that form while the cucumber marinates with garlic, an Arbol chile, lime juice and other ingredients. As a bonus, the fresh mozzarella pairs well with the marinated cucumbers.

Directions
In a large, plastic bag, combine cucumbers, garlic, chile, sugar, salt, and 1 tablespoon of the lime juice. Seal and shake the bag. With the palm of your hand, lightly smush the cucumbers to release their juices. Let the bag with the cucumbers and juices stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Drain the cucumbers, reserving 2 tablespoons of the cucumber juice. Discard the garlic and chile. In a medium bowl, whisk the cucumber juice with the remaining 1 tablespoon of lime juice and 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Add the cucumbers, sliced radishes, and herbs. Arrange the salad on four plates. To serve, place a slice of fresh mozzarella on top of each salad. Longtime vegetarian Randy Graham is the author of several cookbooks and a popular food blog. Heather Olmstead, front left, was an assistant coach for the gold medal winning Team USA women’s volleyball team at the recent Pan Am Games.
Olmstead worth her weight in gold
Assistant volleyball coach part of first USA Pan Am gold since 1967 BY DAN TERRY, VOLLEYBALL EDITOR Every four years, in years preceding the Summer Olympics, a new batch of national team volleyball players cut their teeth in the Pan American Games. One of the coaches at the helm of Team USA this year was newly promoted Heather Olmstead. Olmstead, a Carpinteria High School alumna, was just awarded the head coach position for the Brigham Young University Women’s Volleyball team after the team’s Cinderella run to the National NCAA Championship in December, at which Heather was the assistant coach. Shortly after BYU’s incredible performance in the NCAA tournament, Olmstead was contacted by Santa Barbara native and volleyball legend Karch Kiraly. Kiraly is the current head coach for the 2016 Olympic Women’s Indoor Volleyball Team and asked Olmstead to assist Dan Fisher with the U.S. National team at the 2015 Pan American games in Toronto, Canada. Needless to say, Olmstead got on board. “Coaching at the international level has been a great experience for me. I got to see how similar it is to what we’ve been doing at BYU, so it was easy to feel comfortable coaching these players. Their talent level was very high and they understood the game extremely well. It was also great to work with coach Fisher, he managed and coached the team very professionally, which will help me as I transition to being a head coach myself,” says Olmstead. This year’s Pan Am team was a very promising group of players, and expectations were high. Through the initial two matches in pool play, USA looked to be the favorite for the championship, winning each match decisively 3-0. In the third and final match of the pool, they faced defending Pan Am champions Brazil. USA took game one and looked to be in control for most of the second, but eventually let it get away from them, giving up the second game to Brazil. Team USA bounced back and
took game three by a wide margin, 25-18. On the brink of losing the match and a bye in the next round of the tournament, Brazil, fed by an electric crowd, battled back winning games four and five, 25-22, 15-11 respectively. “It felt like playing in a home match for Brazil,” recalled Olmstead. “Overall, we were very pleased with how we played and did a good job considering all of the emotion of the match.” In the quarterfinals, Team USA faced off against Cuba, while Brazil rested, and won 3-1. In the semifinals, Team USA also defeated Dominican Republic, 3-1, while Brazil narrowly defeated Puerto Rico, a team that the U.S. beat in three games, in five. This gave the U.S. another shot at Brazil, but this time for a Gold Medal. Again, it looked as if things were under control and through two well fought games the U.S. had Brazil at its mercy, just like their first meeting, but as history enjoys repeating itself, Brazil refused to go down without a fight. Brazil battled back into the match in the third game putting the U.S. down 20-12. “When we were down in the third set, we were telling the team what we needed to do to get back into the set, which was stay in the present with each touch. We made a few huge plays and suddenly we were back in the game. The team always believed in each other and never gave up,” said Olmstead. Refusing to let Brazil get a foothold, like they did in pool play, Team USA avenged its only loss of the tournament and came back to defeat Brazil 28-26 in dramatic fashion, winning Team USA’s first Pan-Am Games Gold in Women’s Volleyball since 1967. “We played a better and smarter match in the finals … We were prepared for the emotions playing Brazil creates; we were playing for each other and for the USA. It was so amazing to see them win Gold and bring it back to the USA!” commented Olmstead.

Carpinteria Junior Lifeguards of the week are, from top left, Carly Medina and Kai Camlimpong; from middle left, Grayson Macleod, Jeanette Fantoni and Reyn Clayton; and from bottom left, Shaya Alexander, Rafael Lopez, Wyatt Stevenson and Isaac Carrillo.
JGs of the Week A group (ages 14 to 17)
Wyatt Stevenson has focused all his energy towards achieving one goal, a goal he achieved at regionals by winning first place in beach flags. He gives 100 percent every day and stays longer to get more practice. Jeanette Fantoni has always brought the best attitude to JGs. As a safety aid this year, she sets an example, and not a day has gone by without Jeanette coming to JGs with a stellar smile. Shaya Alexander has one of the best attitudes at JGs. No matter the workout, she maintains a positive outlook throughout the day constantly encouraging the other A’s, in addition to the instructors.
B group (ages 12 and 13)
Rafael Lopez was chosen for his hard work, positive attitude and being an all around great JG to have. Isaac Carrillo was asked to come to Regionals on short notice and pulled off some great swims. He also helped out his team and had a great sense of humor the whole time.

Kai Camlimpong is one of our most improved JG’s. The first week, he struggled to swim a short distance and needed a lot of assistance. This week he swam a crazy 500 meter platform workout swim with very little help. His stroke has improved significantly, and his attitude has been exemplary. Carly Medina works so hard on all of our dry land workouts. Today during our “suicide runs” she pushed herself and finished first out of all 130 C’s. She shows us what a true competitor looks like. Reyn Clayton traveled to the Regionals Championship in Huntington last Friday and placed fifth out of 17 in the distance paddle. Clayton caught a wave into shore where he passed four other JGs at the finish. Grayson Macleod is the C’s strongest swimmers and helped compete in all of the swimming events at regionals. She is always excited to be at JGs and even more excited to workout.

International director visits Carpinteria Lions
Howard Hudson, newly elected Lions International Director, paid a visit to the Carpinteria Lions Club on July 23 and spoke about his new role. Hudson is from the Santa Barbara Host Club, and he is a regular visitor to the local club. This meeting, however, marked his first visit since becoming an International Director. In his new role, one of many programs Howard will advocate for is the Centennial Service Challenge to benefit 100 million people for Lions International’s 100th anniversary in 2017. The four areas of focus are youth, vision, hunger and environment.

Chamber CEO meets Morning Rotary
Joyce Donaldson, the new president/Ceo of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce, gave the Carpinteria morning Rotary Club an overview of what the organization does in the community. CVCC is taking a leadership role by promoting local businesses and by serving as a conduit to influence local, state and federal legislative policies. prior to accepting her current position, Donaldson was president/Ceo of the Indio Chamber of Commerce in the Coachella Valley, which was awarded a prestigious 4-Star Accreditation, putting the organization in the top 3 percent of nearly 7,000 chambers in the United States. “(Donaldson) brings a tremendous amount of leadership experience and enthusiasm that will surely benefit our local business community,” stated morning Rotarian einar Roden.
Noon Rotary welcomes Olympic swimmer
The Rotary Club of Carpinteria enjoyed the story of swimmer Jeff Farrell, an olympic gold medalist, who lives in montecito. Farrell presented to a group of 25 Rotarians and guests at their weekly luncheon meeting on July 23. He spoke of how important it is to have a goal in life and how he was able to secure the coaching and personal support that was needed to reach the olympic level and compete at the 1960 games in Rome.

Working with uncertainty
uncertainty shows up in large and small ways all the time. There are many times in life when we are stuck in limbo—waiting to hear from your doctor about some test results, waiting to find out whether you got the job, waiting to hear your partner’s response to your concerns or waiting to hear if your funding proposal was accepted. No matter how courageous or motivated we feel, when we put ourselves out there and live our lives, there are no guarantees. Because uncertainty can be uncomfortable, we have trained ourselves to avoid it whenever possible. We form opinions, treat them as facts and then defend them as if our physical survival depended on it. We make predictions about the future as if we carry a crystal ball everywhere we go. This strategy of prediction and defense often leads to stress, conflict and disappointment. So, how do we work peacefully and joyfully with the reality of uncertainty? It is useful to know that uncertainty (and certainty for that matter) is physiological. There is activity in the brain and body that creates the discomfort associated with not knowing. Therefore, the first step to working with uncertainty is to notice the physical sensations that show up with it. In other words, where in your body do you feel it? This awareness allows you to practice acceptance of these sensations as a natural part of life rather than something to be avoided. Next, it is helpful to focus your attention on what is most important. It is helpful to use compassion and gratitude as tools for connecting with what really matters to you. You can open your heart to the reality that everyone struggles with uncertainty. You can sit quietly and be grateful for the fact that you are a living, breathing human being. When you have recognized and accepted the internal experience of uncertainty, and when you have connected with what is

deeply important to you, then you have a choice to make. Will you drop your worry about the unknown future and put your energy into something else in the present, or will you take some small action that will positively influence the unknown future? once you commit to letting go or taking action, then you have the opportunity to notice what happens next. This practice—opening, noticing, accepting, connecting, choosing, and committing—is how we move from awareness to action. This practice will not keep uncertainty from showing up in your life—there is nothing that can do that. However, this practice provides a path for strengthening self-awareness and wellbeing when uncertainty naturally arises. Wellbeing—vitality, personal growth, human connection and unconditional happiness—is a skill that you can practice in any circumstance. The experience of uncertainty is one of many opportunities to master this practice. Dave Mochel has taught classes in neuroscience, wellbeing and leadership for 25 years. He works with individuals, schools and businesses to help them focus their attention and energy to enhance performance, reduce stress and maximize quality of life. The dragons were among dozens of local participants in the Carpinteria Library’s recent Stuffed Animal Sleepover, in which kids brought their favorite plush playmates to the overnight activity.

Tunbergs fall for Havasupai Falls
Absorbing all the wonder of the Grand Canyon, Cindy and James Tunberg stumbled upon the spectacular Havasupai Falls. The falls are on the Havasupai Reservation, and the people, the Havasupai, are named for the wonder of the waters. Havasupai means people of the blue-green waters.
