Winter hours at museum start in January

The Carpinteria Valley Museum of History is switching to winter and summer hours, museum representatives announced last week. From January through April, the museum at 956 Maple Ave. will be open Wednesday through Saturday, 1–4 p.m.; and from May through December, Tuesday through Saturday, 1–4 p.m. Museum Director Jayme Yahr said the updated hours allow the museum to work on new exhibitions and upgrade its storage, among other things. “We are also in great need of volunteers, who keep the museum open to visitors and help with administrative tasks, customer service, and general museum needs during the week. The museum is not a city-funded institution and has a staﬀ of one. We welcome anyone who wants to get involved with the museum to call or email in the new year!” Yahr said in an email. Strong storm expected over Christmas holiday

An atmospheric river storm is expected to hit Santa Barbara County and southwest California this week, with rain predicted Tuesday, Dec. 23 through Saturday, Dec. 27. A flood watch was also issued, covering Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening for all four counties: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles and Ventura. Debris flows and widespread urban flooding are possible, the National Weather Service warned on Sunday. Gusty winds were also predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday. Areas north of Point Conception could see two to four inches of rain, with peak rates of .4 to 1.0 inch per hour, and four to eight inches in the foothills and mountains; areas south(805) of Point Conception could see four to eight inches of rain, with peak rates of .6 to 1.25 inch per hour, and six to 12 inches in the mountains and foothills. MY WELLNESS NOW VICKIE GONZALEZ December, we are often told, is a time to feel good, grateful and festive. or many people, this season is lled with oy. or others, however, it can lead to e haustion, overstimulation, or simply a sense of meh. Although December tends to amplify the pressure to be in high spirits, the truth is that it can happen any month of the year. Whenever we are not matched up with how we or others think we “should” feel, an impulse often kicks in we try to talk ourselves into a better mood. We tell ourselves to shake it oﬀ and think positively. We tell ourselves that everyone is in the holiday spirit, and we should be too! But here is the thing: trying to force a feeling will usually leave us feeling more disconnected, not less. People are often taught to try to push past feelings they don t like. Well-meaning people tell us, and we then tell ourselves to “Just be positive!” We are told to snap out of it and be grateful, and you will feel better. These comments usually come from a good place; we want relief, and others want us to feel better. We want to stay connected and keep moving forward. owever, overriding feelings rarely works. t can create tension in the body and self-judgmental thoughts in our

Avofest board continues donations

The California Avocado Festival continued the giving season by donating $2,500 each to two local organizations: The Howard School and the Carpinteria Skate Foundation. The donations were made to The Howard School to help enrich educational opportunities for students and the Skate Foundation to help invest in safe, engaging spaces for local youth, according to California Avocado Festival board member Angie Torres-Miller. ––Jun Starkey

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon invited freelance photographer and Coastal View News columnist Chuck Graham to speak at a recent club meeting, where Graham spoke about his work and the time he spends in nature. Graham also leads kayak tours through the Channel Islands National Park, where he takes many of his photographs. Graham shared many of his photos with club members, as well as insights into the wildlife that exists on the Channel Islands. He is also a published author with three works, including “Paddling into a Natural Balance.”

Since Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Thursday this holiday season, E.J. Harrison & Sons will delay its regular Thursday trash, recycling and yard/organics waste collection schedule in Carpinteria one day during those weeks, to Friday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Jan. 2. Two weeks after Christmas, from Tuesday, Dec. 26, through Monday, Jan. 12, residents may put out extra holiday waste curbside on collection day – up to two 50-gallon bags – free of charge. Also, remember to recycle your Christmas tree by removing the ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel, bows, nails and tree stand. Cut the tree into sections no more than 4 feet long and place in your yard/organics waste cart on your scheduled pickup day. (This is the preferred method, which we highly encourage.) Or, place the whole Christmas tree at the curb on collection day. Flocked trees can be recycled too!

The Clark family of Carpinteria recently traveled to the Solomon Islands, where they took a photograph with the leader of one of the villages they visited. The Clarks were joined by 15 other snorkelers on a multi-island tour of the Solomon Islands. “The boat visited numerous villages where it traded for food and handmade goods,” Larry Clark told Coastal View News.

arpinteria s ghosts of hristmas past

Early Carpinteria residents celebrated Christmas with verve and imagination. One year, Santa distributed gifts to children beneath a Christmas tree — as traditional as it gets. Another one featured temperance verse and gory scenes from luebeard. A different time, Santa clambered through a church window and stirred up mischief, until the real Santa burst through the door and exposed him as a fake. On Christmas Eve 1873, Carpinteria families assembled in the Methodist Church, where a huge tree was laden with gifts. After songs and prayers, Santa handed out presents. While the children got gifts, bachelors in the crowd got cakes. The bachelors looked so delighted, according to a letter in the Santa Barbara Weekly Press, that they seemed ready to stay single for another year just to get more cakes. Another paper, the Santa Barbara Daily Morning Times, urged other communities to emulate Carpinteria’s Christmas celebration. Five years later, the Weekly Press recounted a more cerebral event. On the evening of Christmas 1878, several Carpinteria schoolteachers mounted what the paper called “a literary entertainment and festival,” apparently with no children and no Santa. J. C. Oliver led off with a temperance lecture and discussion, followed by the reading of a temperance poem by Mattie Colby. The rest of the evening combined skits (with a few more temperance messages), music, and a Victorian craze called tableaux in which people dressed in costumes and posed in imitation of great paintings or literary classics. The Carpinteria tableaux included the blood-soaked fairytale “Bluebeard” — perhaps a better choice for Halloween than for Christmas. In 1884 came the reverse of that Santa-less literary evening: a Christmas Eve featuring three Carpinteria Santas, according to the Santa Barbara Independent. At the Baptist Church, P. C. Higgins as Santa descended through a fake chimney, grumbling about the tightness of the t and the heat of the flames, and gave out presents, candy and popcorn balls.

Not to be outdone, the Methodist Church that year had two Santas. The rst one, played by ohn ailard, climbed through a window and began pilfering things and causing a ruckus. Then a second one, played by Col. J. G. Deaderick, came through the door, declared himself the one true Santa, and ordered the impish impersonator to go. After a brief squabble, the real Santa allowed the pretender to stay and help distribute gifts. Whether sacred or secular, these holiday gatherings provided one measure of the Christmas season. Another measure was what passed for cutting loose in early Carpinteria. A few months after buying the Carpinteria Valley News in 1913, Arthur Miller Clark got a taste of holiday revelry in his new hometown, as he recounts in his 1962 book “From Grove to Cove to Grove: A Brief History of Carpinteria Valley, California.” After work on Christmas Eve, News printer Harry Moon told Clark, “Let’s get out and paint the town red.” Clark agreed. They headed to the pool hall, where they threw back a couple of bottles of soda pop. The barber shop next door was crowded with men waiting for haircuts, eager to look their best for Christmas. Some were passing the time playing cards. Moon spotted an opportunity to show his boss a sample of Carpinteria carousing. He asked the dealer for $10 worth of chips. Cards were a regular pastime in Carpinteria. On Sunday mornings, some ranchers would drop their families at church and then play cards until the service ended. But on Christmas Eve, nobody felt like wagering serious money. Moon’s request for $10 in chips shut down the game. So, after a soda and a failed eﬀort to play cards, Clark headed home, having learned what it meant to paint the town red on Christmas Eve in Carpinteria. Stephen Bates is coauthor (with Vince Burns) of a pictorial history of Rincon Point, which is available at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History and elsewhere.

Four pairs of sisters join forces on Carpinteria’s girls soccer team

Carpinteria’s girls soccer team has started this year with an impressive 7-0-1 record, beginning the year with an early mi of oﬀensive repower and defensive strength. Heading into the winter holiday break, the Warriors have outscored opponents - this season, with ve shutout wins, including the team’s latest 7-0 win over Citrus Coast League rival Hueneme on Dec. 19. The Warriors success this year is no surprise. Carpinteria’s team is built from a core group of returning players from last year s playoﬀ s uad, with the addition of a new generation of younger players who have already made an impact at the varsity level. But there’s a reason these veteran players and their younger counterparts get along so well together, and it’s the true secret to the team’s success this year. The Warriors have four pairs of sisters on this year s s uad freshman en i ardner and her older sister, unior aydance ardner freshman oselyn ara and senior velyn ara freshman aroline ooney and senior harlotte ooney and sophomore Callie Labistour and senior Logan Labistour. Carpinteria head coach Freddy Martine said it was a uni ue e perience to coach four pairs of siblings on the same team. In his 18 years of coaching, he’s seen plenty of siblings come and go, playing

for the same program in diﬀerent years, but this is the rst time he s ever seen so many siblings take the eld together on a varsity s uad. He said this is a situation that can only happen in a small, close-knit beach community like Carpinteria, where families grow up together and kids play together as soon as they can kick a ball. The ardner, ara, ooney and abistour families have spent many weekends on the sidelines together, watching the girls progress through the A S youth soccer program. In 2022, the older sisters aydance ardner, velyn ara, harlotte Cooney and Logan Labistour — won the Western State inals two years later, their little sisters did the same. The younger Warriors — freshmen en i, oselyn and aroline, with sophomore Callie — were immediately ready for high school competition, and all were called up to play on the varsity s uad in their rst years in the program. “The fact that all the younger siblings were varsity-ready their freshman season is no ﬂuke, coach artine said. know it’s because the sport of soccer and our Warrior Spirit runs deep in all those families. He says it’s been a pleasure to watch the older generation take on leadership roles on the eld and to see the sisterly bonds extend out to the rest of the team. “I think this is the special sauce that has been a huge reason for our early success this season, artine said. ven the

That factor has given the youngsters some condence and that has really driven their success on the varsity s uad. n the eld, the sister-teammates ust need a uick glance, a small shout of encouragement, and they seem to know just what needs to be done to help the team win. The team chemistry was on full display during the Warriors most recent win, a 7-0 shutout over ueneme in the nal game before the winter break. In this win, one of the older sisters, aydance, scored a goal within the rst two minutes of the game. Then the younger generation got involved, with allie and oselyn adding goals to give the Warriors a 3-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the freshmen kept the highlights coming, with Caroline scoring a pair of goals, and oselyn scoring twice more to nish with a hat trick in the win. n the last goal, oselyn got the assist from her older sister Evelyn. It was a perfect example of the unselfish leadership from the veteran players, who set the stage for their younger teammates to nd success on the eld. “Evelyn has had many moments when she can pad her stats and keep some personal glory but she doesn t, coach

Every December means the return of holiday hoops to Carpinteria with the annual Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic boys basketball tournament. Three Carpinteria eighth graders were selected to take part in the prestigious USA Water olo lympic Development rogram oliday amp in olorado Springs, Colo., where the three young water polo stars had the opportunity to train with some of the best in the country. olyn ega, ia a and unius edders were among the youth athletes chosen from across the entire country. Being selected is considered a milestone moment for young water polo athletes. That four-letter word

THE SEAWITCH SAYS AMY OROZCO Dear Amy O, There is a four-letter word, beginning with an “F,” that is considered profane, but linguistically is one of the most versatile words in English — verb, noun, adjective, adverb and exclamation. I believe that men exercise the usage of this word extensively in their communications. When women use this word, it is not acceptable in any context by most men and women. The need for this choice of words is individual and it exerts “expressive power.” As a woman, I choose to express myself many times using this word (dependent on company of course). The need to be this expressive is rooted in the individual woman. Where does the problem lie? With those who are choosing to be oﬀended because of its traditional “vulgar” association r the users in need to nd the root of exercising such “expressive power”? Lack of vocabulary has always been the argument. But is there another word that commands attention and at the same time expresses the emotion of the spewer? Finding light when the season feels heavy

COFFEE, CAREER AND KIDDOS T E R E S A A LVA R E Z The holidays are supposed to be joyful — at least that’s how I remember them as a kid. There are twinkling lights on houses, holiday music at every store, and what seems like never-ending tamales. But for many of us, especially this year, that joy can feel just out of reach. As the executive director of Carpinteria Children’s Project, I spend my days immersed in the realities facing local families: housing instability, financial stress, parental exhaustion, and children carrying more anxiety than any child should have to hold. As a mom of two, I also experience the quieter weight of the season — balancing schedules, planning family gatherings, managing emotions (theirs and mine) and trying to create magic while the world feels uncertain. Some days, the heaviness is hard to ignore. The holidays tend to magnify every-

thing. The joy, yes, but also the grief, the worry and the sense that we should be doing more or feeling better than we are. I hear it from parents in our programs, from friends, and from colleagues alike: I’m tired. I’m overwhelmed. I want to feel joyful, but how do I hold both the heaviness and the joy? This year, instead of chasing a picture-perfect holiday, I’ve been practicing something simpler: focusing on the experiences that help break through the noise. Those look like my kids dancing at the Aliso Holiday Party, children laughing in our classrooms, and a parent expressing their gratitude for connecting them to the right support. These moments don’t erase the challenges we face, but they soften them. As a mom, I’m learning that my children don t need a ﬂawless holiday. They need presence. They need honesty. They need to know that it’s okay to feel many things at once — that joy and sadness, excitement and worry, can coexist. When I allow myself that same grace, the season feels more manageable. I’ve also been reminded that hope doesn’t always arrive loudly. Sometimes it shows up in persistence. In kindness that isn’t performative. In showing up again and again, even when it’s hard. I’m grateful for our team at CCP for doing this day after day. So if this holiday season feels heavy for you, you’re not alone. It doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re human, living in a complex world, caring

Teresa holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from UCSB and a master’s degree in psychology from Antioch Santa Barbara. She currently serves on the Future Leaders of America board and is a founding member of the Santa Barbara Latino Giving Circle. Teresa loves to travel, read and chase after her two boys.
