ome as you are. Shorts and flip-flops are just fine. Grab a burger and a margarita. Order tacos after a day on the beach. Bring the kids. If the dog is along, there’s a spot on the outdoor patio—and, with permission, even a slice of bacon waiting. Longboard Café owner Rick Vach wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’ve got a beach crowd, and this is a beach place,” he says. But casual doesn’t mean ordinary. Behind Longboard Café’s easygoing surf-inspired atmosphere is a kitchen serving homemade sauces and dressings, fresh seafood, premium burgers, entrée-sized salads and a dinner menu that stretches from Wagyu steak to crispy duck, seafood pasta and a changing fresh catch. Rick has a phrase for the balance: “Casual dining, refined.” It wasn’t necessarily the restaurant he expected to create when Longboard opened at 67th Street in Ocean City in 2013. “It was originally going to be a surfer-rat place—burgers, tacos, margaritas,” Rick says. Then he saw the finished space. The buildout was more polished than he had envisioned. So Rick began thinking bigger about the food, adding salads and eventually dinner entrées. Longboard has continued evolving ever since, including an expansion into the neighboring storefront three years ago and an upgraded enclosure that allows its outdoor dining area to be used year-round. The restaurant now seats about 175, but its original personality remains intact. “We’re not doing foie gras and caviar,” Rick says. “We’re doing good American food with a Mexican hint to it.”

FULL-ON FLAVOR Rick spent years living in San Diego, and that Baja influence naturally works its way through Longboard’s menu. The restaurant’s range is part of its appeal. “You’ve got to play to your crowd,” he says. September/October 2026 • CoastalStyleMag.com

At Longboard, that means offering plenty of reasons to return. There are eight burgers, including the signature Longboard burger layered with spicy-sweet bacon, provolone, horseradish crema, red onion and a fried egg. The crabby patty burger is topped with lump crabmeat and crab imperial sauce. Baja fish tacos remain a top seller, while the new smash burger taco—Longboard’s taco take on a classic fast-food burger—has quickly climbed the ranks. Then there are the dishes that have developed followings of their own. Longboard’s wings have won every wing competition the restaurant has entered, Rick says. The signature version starts with large chicken wings that are fried and tossed in a soy-based house sauce made from roughly 15 ingredients, then finished with bacon dust and crumbled blue cheese. The famous wrinkled green beans date back to Rick’s Island Time Café days. Deep-fried and tossed in a thick, flavorful house sauce, they have become another Longboard staple. “Mothers love us because their kids are eating green beans,” Rick jokes. “We sell these by the truckload.” The sauces behind both dishes have become popular enough to bottle and sell in Longboard’s market, located just off the bar alongside other house-made sauces and dressings, apparel and restaurant merchandise. Freshness, Rick says, is nonnegotiable. “I can’t tell you how many food deliveries we get a week,” he says. “All the recipes are house recipes.” CASUAL, ELEVATED, EVOLVING Longboard changes its menu twice a year, but Rick has learned to choose carefully. “We only change five or six things,” he says. “When we take stuff off, people say, ‘Don’t take that off.’ We introduce very few menu items that don’t do well.” Rather than reinventing Longboard, the team tweaks it. This approach is reflected in the restaurant itself. Over more than a decade, Longboard has expanded physically, developed a more elevated dinner program and become increasingly reservationdriven—even outside of the summer season. Meanwhile, what remains the same are the rituals that Longboard regulars love. Daily happy hour runs from 5 to 6 p.m., with two-for-one cocktails throughout the restaurant rather than only at the bar. Off-season specials give locals another reason to return. Families are part of the mix, too, thanks to a kids’ menu and playful bibs that read, “Burp’s Up.” And for the dogs, there are “Got Bacon?” bandanas. At the heart of it all, Rick says, is a staff he considers central to Longboard’s success. “We have an excellent staff,” he says. “A lot of people have been working with us for many years. We have people who have been with us since the day we opened in 2013.” CS www.longboardcafe.net

or sisters Sherry Christopher and Lori Dever, art is always in motion. It’s something you make, talk about, question and experience. It’s the reason people linger. It can spark a conversation between strangers—or send two sisters to brunch, where a Bloody Mary and a little “what-if” thinking turned a longtime dream into 3ten Studios in Cambridge, Maryland. “What do we have to lose?” Sherry recalls of the conversation that started it all. “Let’s just do a gallery where we can make our own art.” That was in 2023. Today, 3ten Studios is a working gallery in downtown Cambridge where the sisters paint in the space, host themed exhibitions, welcome guest artists, teach classes and regularly transform the walls with new works. “It turned into a pretty cool atmosphere for the community where people are coming in and thanking us because there’s nothing else like it here,” Lori says. Most importantly, 3ten gives Sherry and Lori the freedom to create whatever moves them. “We started to do themes that would interest us, and we both paint anything,” Lori says. “If you come into the gallery, it looks like there are 25 different artists in here.” But there are just two. And this creative range is exactly the point. MADE TO CREATE Long before 3ten had walls of its own, the sisters were creating together. They grew up in Baltimore in a family where making things was part of everyday life. Their mother, Jeraldine, crocheted and painted. Their father, Paul, a Baltimore City police officer, would sit with his daughters at the dining room table and draw. Handmade gifts often arrived from their grandmother. And one particularly memorable Christmas brought a Crayola caddy that helped cement the sisters’ fascination with making art. September/October 2026 • CoastalStyleMag.com

Both pursued art beyond those early years. Lori studied at Columbus College of Art and Design, while Sherry developed her work through art classes and largely self-directed study. Over the years, both exhibited in galleries and shows, but the idea of opening a place of their own persisted. Even the gallery’s name circles back to the family that encouraged them. Their father’s police badge number was 310. “It was always a significant number in our family,” Sherry says. Naming the gallery 3ten was a tribute to their parents, who gave the sisters such a creative foundation. Lori and Sherry are close. “We’re best friends,” Lori says, with Sherry laughing, “We want to strangle each other sometimes, but that’s normal.” Artistically and professionally, however, their differences work in their favor. Sherry has taught herself the digital and technical side of the business; she built the gallery’s website. Lori brings a retail background and an eye for merchandising, price points and what appeals to visitors. “Sherry is the yin to my yang,” Lori says. Their artwork is equally individual. Covering 3ten’s walls are floral and nude paintings, whimsical and abstract works, pop-culture-inspired pieces, largescale canvases and art that draws from

memory, emotion and observation. Lori has also created painted skateboards and works influenced by artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, mixing those references with contemporary social media culture. Sherry’s abstract florals have developed their own following. Some canvases stretch four or five feet. Others are translated into accessible pieces such as prints, stickers and candles featuring original artwork. “Everything is 100 percent original,” Lori says. And there is always more coming. “We’re very prolific in production,” Sherry says. “We’re always creating.” WHAT’S NEW The sisters work together as a creative machine, and the energy is palpable at 3ten. They rotate exhibitions every three months, producing four themed shows each year. Their annual Rock & Roll Art Show has become a signature event, while previous exhibitions such as Land of Misfit Toys have explored pop culture and nostalgic subjects. Unlike a traditional gallery where artists deliver finished pieces and walk away, Sherry and Lori are often standing a few feet from their canvases, working on whatever comes next. For visitors, that changes the

experience. “What they’re getting is one-on-one connection with the artist who has actually created the work they’re looking at,” Lori says. The sisters are happy to talk about a painting, but they’re equally interested in hearing what someone else sees in it. Abstract work, in particular, tends to invite questions and different interpretations. These exchanges have helped create a community around the gallery. Some visitors have become collectors, returning to purchase multiple works. Others simply come back to see what’s new. Also, 3ten participates in downtown events and hosts Second Saturdays, bringing musical guests and a regular DJ into the gallery. Classes invite adults and teens into the creative process. “I want them to live the art,” Lori says. “I think it’s important.” The gallery has already evolved since opening its doors. After beginning in a quieter location in 2023, 3ten moved a block into the heart of downtown Cambridge in December 2025. The current space puts the sisters closer to the activity of the city’s Arts & Entertainment District and the community that has increasingly embraced what they are doing. “The space has galvanized people to gather here,” says Lori. “They’re excited,

they’re moved and they keep coming back.” Now people ask when the next show is coming. The answer is always “soon.” This fall, Lori will take the idea of conversation between viewer and artwork even further with an evolving exhibition built around the premise that a person standing before a painting becomes part of its story. Visitors will be invited to spend time with the work

and anonymously record what they notice, feel and imagine the painting might say. Those responses can then become part of future exhibitions and explorations of the project. “There is no official interpretation,” she explains in her invitation to viewers. “There are no wrong answers.” CS For events and shows, visit www.3tenartgallery.com.

or Sharon Thorpe, photography opens a window to explore new worlds. It’s a storytelling medium that exposes viewers to diverse perspectives, new ideas and places they’ve never visited—or places they see all the time but, through her lens, can experience in different ways. On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, that might mean workboats returning to Dogwood Harbor, watermen carrying on generations of tradition, or a familiar landscape transformed by season and light. Sharon is drawn to these moments, but she is interested in more than merely capturing what she sees. She wants to dive deeper. Sharon says she is getting more comfortable with the idea of herself as an artist whose foundation is graphic design. In her career, she has moved fluidly from photography to graphic design, collage art and visual storytelling. “I’ve always had an interest in photography, but I like many different creative avenues,” she says. Increasingly, those disciplines are coming together. Some of Sharon’s photographs simply document a moment in time. Others become starting points for more abstract work, shaped and reconsidered through the eye of an artist who has spent decades communicating visually. “I’m working on more abstract, less literal, less pictorial versions of these photos,” she says. In many ways, Sharon’s work has become an evolving visual archive of the Eastern Shore—its landscapes and working waterfronts, certainly, but also the people and traditions that give its communities their character. Sharon says, “The Eastern Shore has an inspiring landscape and environment, and it breeds creativity.”

coastal STYLE TH E A RT S A VISUAL VOCABULARY Sharon grew up in Baltimore as part of a family that traveled often; although somewhat surprisingly, the Eastern Shore wasn’t a regular destination. She first encountered St. Michaels on a high school field trip. Years later, after a career centered largely around Washington, D.C., the Eastern Shore would become home—and one of her most enduring subjects. Sharon trained as a graphic designer and spent more than 30 years leading a graphics team for the Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County. She also taught design, typography and illustration as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her career included work for organizations such as World Wildlife Fund and the DC Environmental Film Festival, along with more than a decade of projects with National Geographic. There, she mostly focused on children’s publications including World magazine, as well as books, atlases and educational materials. Being surrounded by National Geographic photographers, writers and explorers left a lasting impression. “I was really lucky to work with some amazing photographers,” she says, recalling elevator conversations with photographers casually discussing assignments such as documenting giant squid. “It was just an incredible environment.” It also reinforced an approach that continues to inform her photography today: images can explain, interpret and tell a story. GAINING PERSPECTIVE Sharon is particularly drawn to the individuality of Eastern Shore communities. “Each little town is so different,” she says. “St. Michaels is different from Easton, which is different from Cambridge. They all have such unique flavors.” Tilghman Island has become especially personal. Sharon considers it her community and serves on the board of the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum. She also volunteers her creative skills with organizations including the Talbot Watermen Association and other local groups. Through those relationships, her understanding of what she photographs has changed. “When I started photographing down there, I was just collecting and grabbing and looking,” she says. “I’ve learned to be a little bit more selective and careful and respectful.” That distinction matters when the subject is not simply a picturesque workboat but the person whose livelihood depends on it. Sharon often spends time around Dogwood Harbor, watching boats return and talking with watermen. She has heard some say that the attention from cameras can make them feel as though they are “in a zoo.” “This is their vocation,” Sharon says. “They’re very proud and hardworking people.” She asks her subjects’ permission to share. “There are times I’ve taken photos where I’ll say, ‘I love this photo, but I really need to ask the subject if I can share it,’” she relates. “I just do it intuitively. I’ve never heard a no, but I think people appreciate being asked.” Her work with the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum has taken that idea further. For a recent exhibit featuring photographs by Eastern Shore photographer Jay Fleming, Sharon organized imagery into subject areas and developed accompanying text explaining aspects of the watermen’s work, including gill netting and crab potting. She interviewed watermen to make sure she got it right, and the

conversations went beyond technique. Watermen talked about generations of families working the water. They also pointed out the uncertainty facing a traditional livelihood as the Chesapeake Bay and the commercial fishing industry continue to change. Photography, in other words, led to a way to learn more. “It allowed me to really ask their opinions about things and interview them and hear what they were most proud of,” she says. A CREATIVE LANDSCAPE Sharon’s work continues to push beyond literal documentation. Her Look Again collection explores new territory, moving toward less pictorial interpretations of familiar subjects. Other projects capture log canoe sailing and the working Chesapeake, while portrait, street and industrial photography allow her to exercise an entirely different visual muscle. She often begins with a project in mind, an approach that reflects her design background. Rather than waiting for an image to happen, she considers what she is trying to explore or communicate and builds from there. Still, there is plenty of room for spontaneity. And the Eastern Shore keeps providing material. “The longer I’m here, the more I appreciate winter and off-season

too,” she says. “It’s just so incredible all year long.” Outside her home, ospreys nest nearby and bald eagles remain a sight she says she will never take for granted. She also finds inspiration in the creative community around her. On Tilghman Island, she shows her work at 2Vintage Too. The space features 11 local artists working in mediums ranging from oils and watercolors to mosaics, found objects and photography. Spaces like this allow artists to collaborate and connect— another expression of the creative energy Sharon sees throughout the Eastern Shore. That community comes together in many forms, including Tilghman Island Day in October, when Sharon will once again be behind the camera documenting the watermen, workboats and traditions that make the island distinctive. But whether Sharon is photographing a community event, experimenting with abstraction or quietly watching boats return to Dogwood Harbor, she is interested in what happens after the first glance. “I feel so lucky to have all these creative opportunities,” she says. “The Eastern Shore is a plentiful land of creative people.” Her advice is to participate in it. “I would encourage people to jump in and creatively enjoy all the different aspects that the area has to offer,” she says. n Tilghman Island, working the water is a way of life passed from one generation to the next. On Saturday, Oct. 17, this heritage takes center stage during Tilghman Island Day, a celebration of the watermen, traditions and Chesapeake character that have shaped this historic island community. Workboats race. Captains put their docking skills to the test. Crab pickers and oyster shuckers go head to head. There’s an anchor throw, rowboat competition and plenty of fresh seafood to fuel the crowd between events. It all unfolds in a place where these skills aren’t simply demonstrations of days gone by. Generations of Tilghman Island families have made their living catching crabs, harvesting oysters and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. Once home to dozens of skipjacks used for oyster dredging, the island remains closely tied to its working-waterfront roots. Tilghman Island Day puts those traditions on display—with a little friendly competition thrown in.

Two Chesapeake staples become spectator sports from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the crab-picking and oyster-shucking competitions. apan has a rich history in textiles, so it’s not surprising that Yuh Okano was drawn to the art. As a child in the city of Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, she would watch a maternal uncle—a graphic designer—at work. “Everything was done by hand,” says Yuh, who has been living in Chestertown, MD, since 2020. “Handmade is what I wanted to do.” Beyond her love of textile arts, Yuh had another dream. She was determined to move from her native Japan to the United States. But realizing that dream took time and, as Yuh describes it, “hard work.” For Yuh, talent combined with determination opened remarkable doors. She has designed scarves for Martha Stewart and Donna Karan. Her work has been shown at New York’s Museum of

Modern Art and is represented in the 2026 MoMA Appointment Calendar. The Museum has been producing its weekly engagement calendar since the 1950s and explores different themes from its collection each year. Fifty-three artworks focusing on weaving and textiles are featured in this year’s calendar. “That was lucky for me,” Yuh says of MoMA’s decision to include an image of her Epidermis (Ocean), a 71-by-20inch polyester scarf that is shibori-dyed and heat-set. She was inspired by “the sea and its creatures” such as seaweed, coral, jellyfish, and sea urchins. Shibori, a traditional Japanese technique used to dye fabric, incorporates tying, bunching, folding, stitching, and wrapping fabric to create different patterns. Yuh’s work is also included in the book Structure and Surface: Contemporary

Japanese Textiles, published by the Museum of Modern Art in 2002. Yuh’s father was an electrical engineer, and her mother was a craftsperson who designed, knitted, embroidered and made everything by hand. Yuh wanted something different than working in Japan after graduating from college. “I didn’t think that was the life for me, just to get a job in Japan,” she says. “I was questioning almost all the time. I wanted to understand myself.” Yuh’s dreams began to crystallize when, at 18, she decided to become a textile fashion designer. She enrolled in art school in Japan, where she learned weaving, knitting and silk screening. “I wanted to do textiles,” she says, and her dream of relocating persisted. Her parents said if she chose to go to the U.S., they would help her. She researched all the art and design schools in the U.S. and England, and ultimately transferred to the

She graduated from RISD in 1991 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. “In the U.S. everything was very new to me,” Yuh says. “Students worked very hard, and I loved that.” Recalling those years, Yuh, now 61, lights up. Despite classes in sculpture, glassmaking, ceramics, painting, and textiles, she laments that she “had no portfolio of textile work for the fashion industry” upon graduation. “I couldn’t get a job in New York, so I went back to Japan, and I worked as an assistant graphic designer in Tokyo,” she says. That lasted just a year before her luck changed. Yuh landed a position teaching textiles at a school in Japan. The focus was on dyeing textiles, including silk. Each week she spent four days teaching and had three days off—time that allowed her to develop her own skills. “The teacher has to study as well,” she says, a smile spreading over her face. “I wanted to do something new.” While teaching in Japan for seven years, she also had days off during the summer and winter. It was time to pursue her dream again. She traveled to New York City and showed her portfolio to design agencies, fashion designers and art gallery owners. “I knockknocked everywhere,” she says. She began designing scarves for collections by Martha Stewart and Donna Karan four or five times a year. In 2000, Yuh’s ultimate dream came true. She learned of the artist visa that allows artists with “extraordinary ability,” according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, to live in the U.S. while they are pursuing their work on an ongoing basis. She renewed her artist visa three times before obtaining permanent residency. “Without the artist visa, I wouldn’t be here,” Yuh says. “It changed my life.” That year she set up her own business. “Working hard is important,” Yuh says. “Believing in what you do is important. You have to trust your style.” Yuh lived and worked in Brooklyn for 20 years. Yet life has its twists and turns. “Business from fashion designers declined,” she says. She no longer needed to be in New York, so she began searching for another place to call home. “Since my business shifted to craft, I have to go to shows” in various cities throughout the U.S. such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. While exhibiting at an American Craft Council show in Baltimore, she met Carla Massoni who owned a store called Create, located in Chestertown. Carla purchased Yuh’s scarves, and Yuh learned about the historic town where many artists live. Its charm, pace and supportive artistic community suited her perfectly. What inspires Yuh today? The seasons and colors of nature—plants, flowers and ocean creatures. Besides patterns, color is a big part of her art. She likes to wear yellow and gold but her clients often like blue in her designs, or “something that makes you happy and uplifts your heart.” If it feels right, she goes with it. “I don’t force myself,” Yuh says, who currently exhibits her work in both the U.S. and Japan. “It comes to me.” CS

eep the goal. Alter the course. Regroup and run to the finish. Christine Palmisano collected these life lessons during 16 years of running half marathons across all 50 states. At first, she chased the clock, aiming to break two hours (which she did). She trained with accomplished runners and pushed for performance. Along the way, life evolved and so did the process of accomplishing a bucket list effort that turned into a lifestyle, a commitment to service and newfound love. These lessons are at the heart of Finishing Fifty, Christine's memoir about completing a half marathon in every state. But despite the miles logged and finish lines crossed, she hopes readers understand something from the outset. This isn't really a book about running. “It’s about how we all might adapt and change and still set goals,” she says.

GOING THE DISTANCE—TOGETHER If adaptability kept Christine moving, community helped get her there. “I am a social runner,” she says. Over the years, running introduced her to teammates, coaches and elite athletes. She participated in Team in Training, raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society while two friends battled blood cancers.

And in 2013, several years into the 50-state quest, she met her husband, Mike, who joined the adventure. “I couldn’t have done this without the support of the community,” Christine says. That community became as much a part of the experience as the races themselves. So did the places. Checking off states was never simply about arriving, running 13.1 miles and flying home. She wanted to experience them. In Alaska, she traveled to Seward and cruised among glaciers and wildlife. A race in Arizona meant visiting the Grand Canyon. Other events introduced her to parts of the Deep South and regions she had never explored. “I didn’t realize how much I would learn,” she relates. SAY YES Perhaps the greatest lesson of the journey came from considering how easily it might never have happened at all. Christine hadn't run in 20 years when an aunt invited her to complete a half marathon. Her first instinct? No, thanks. At the time, she was in her 40s, raising a teenager and moving through a divorce and other significant changes in life. Eventually, she reconsidered. Maybe taking

on something difficult was exactly what she needed. “I think I realized the power of accepting an invitation,” she says. “Sometimes it’s easier to say no than do that uncomfortable thing. When you say yes to the thing that pushes you out of your comfort zone, how much growth can you have?” That first half marathon in New York City's Central Park in 2009 was difficult and sweltering, with temperatures around 90 degrees. It was also exhilarating. “I thought I was going to do a half marathon—one and done,” she says. “I didn’t imagine I was going to get the running bug.” One became another. Seven states in, Christine decided she needed a larger goal to ground her through a period of change. Why not all 50? She quickly adds, “I didn’t do it by myself.”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF FINISH LINE Christine didn't know she was collecting material for a book as she crossed the country. The miles, monuments and milestones were filed in her head. Turns out, they needed an exit plan—on to pages. Writing was another part of herself she has rediscovered. During a 35-year government career, Christine wrote reports and assessments for senior leaders. She had largely stepped away from personal writing for more than three decades. As retirement approached, she began writing poetry for herself. Then her father-in-law, Dr. Joseph Palmisano, whom she calls Opa, found out and read her work. He encouraged her to publish. “Sometimes people push you because they see something in you that you don’t see in yourself yet,” she says. She listened, publishing Thoughts From the Heart: Embracing Change and Finding Love in 2025. Then came another idea: Maybe she should tell the story of those 50 states. Christine dug through race records and old emails, reconstructing a journey she had never planned to document. Finishing Fifty followed a year after her poetry collection. Now retired and dividing her time between Ocean Pines and The Villages in Florida, Christine sees writing as another opportunity to keep learning, creating and testing what might come next. It’s not so different from running. Find your people. Adjust when you need to. Give yourself some grace. And keep moving forward. The next finish line? He plans to join the practice in 2028. “As a father and as a physician, it is incredibly rewarding to see Andrew and Justin pursue gastroenterology and bring their own training, expertise and ideas to the practice,” Canakis said. “Our third son, Alexander, pursued his passion in finance and works with J.P. Morgan Chase. What makes me equally proud is seeing him bring that same personal commitment to his profession, helping people understand their finances, guiding

them through important decisions and building relationships with the people he serves.” Canakis believes that Alexander’s approach to his chosen field, like the rest of his family, shows that the same care can be applied to other fields. Not every breast concern is cancer, but every concern deserves answers By Sharnell Smith, MD Breast Surgeon Dense breast tissue: A very common finding that is not abnormal but can make mammograms harder to interpret and may slightly increase breast cancer risk. Women with dense breasts should discuss their screening options with their healthcare practitioner.

Finding a lump, experiencing breast pain or receiving an unexpected mammogram result can be alarming. For many people, the first question is, "Could this be cancer?" The reassuring news is that many breast concerns are not cancer. However, every breast change deserves attention and evaluation. Some of the most common noncancerous breast conditions include: Breast cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that may feel smooth and round. They can sometimes be tender but are usually harmless. Fibroadenomas: Solid, benign lumps that often feel firm and movable under the skin. They are especially common in younger women.

Breast pain: Often caused by hormonal changes, cysts, medications or muscle strain. Breast pain alone is rarely a sign of cancer, but persistent or localized pain should be evaluated. High-risk lesions: Certain biopsy findings, such as atypical hyperplasia, are not cancer but may increase the risk of developing breast cancer in the future. These conditions often require closer follow-up. You’ve been called back after a mammogram. Now what? By Alissa Carr TidalHealth Contributing Writer will determine whether abnormalseeming tissues or cells are cancerous. This result can take five to 10 days.

If you receive a call or a letter indicating something possibly abnormal was found on your mammogram, the first thing you should do is take a deep breath. Your medical team may request additional imaging for a variety of reasons, and they will always be vigilant about reviewing your scans. Next steps could be more detailed imaging, such as a new mammogram or a sonogram, according to Nicholas Dudas, MD, FACS, and medical director for surgical specialties at TidalHealth. You will have an appointment scheduled to review your latest imaging with your physician. Alae Zarif, MD, explained that it will be during this appointment that the physician will discuss what they see and answer your questions. “It’s important to explain everything in terms that my patients can understand,” Dr. Zarif said. This visit may lead to a biopsy, which

Once the biopsy results are received, your doctor will tell you if the results are benign or malignant. Benign means the sample doesn’t show signs of being cancerous, while a biopsy determined to be malignant means cancer cells are present. Malignant cells can grow and spread throughout your body if they are not removed in surgery or targeted with chemotherapy and/or radiation. Sharnell Smith, MD, explained that her relationship with her patients is very important and sharing knowledge and listening to her patients is paramount. For some patients, surgery is the best way to remove a malignant tumor. Your team can consist of a surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, nurses, navigators and support staff. Depending on the individual situation, you and your surgeon may choose a mastectomy or partial mastectomy. Dr. Dudas said that in most cases for breast cancer patients, lymph nodes are also removed and sent for testing to give your team additional information. Dr. Dudas also said he works closely with radiation oncology and medical oncology for additional treatment. Chemotherapy and/or radiation

therapy may be used before surgery or after surgery to target cancer cells and shrink a tumor. After treatment is completed, or sometimes in tandem with surgery, a plastic surgeon will join your team if you choose reconstructive surgery. Dr. Dudas said, “Breast cancer reoccurrence is generally low, but not zero,” so even after the cancer is eradicated, your team will continue to follow you and check in periodically.

tanding outside a home overlooking Indian River Bay, a real estate agent FaceTimed her clients who were casually looking for an Eastern Shore home to serve as a destination for relaxation and hosting extended family. The find turned out to be serendipitous. One look at the water and they knew. “It was naturally stunning,” they agreed. The couple bought the house from its original owners, recognizing good bones and even greater potential. But making it theirs required more than a refresh. What began as a facelift steadily grew into a full-scale reimagination, bringing together architect Sarah B. Armstrong, AIA, of Studio 360; Kelly Kalb, owner of Rehoboth Beach-based Room to Breathe Design & Build; interior designer Maria Galiani; and a host of craftspeople and specialists. Somewhere along the way, the owners realized something else had happened organically. They had assembled an all-female core team that was innately aligned, open to possibilities and detail-driven.

CALM CHARACTER The home's great room offers evidence of the team’s collaborative approach. Two fireplaces anchor opposite ends of the expansive space. One became a dramatic floor-toceiling composition in richly veined marble surrounding a linear fireplace. The other features a quieter marble surround beneath wood paneling and a television. Mitered corners and carefully matched joints turn the marble into architectural art. Much of it was fabricated onsite. “The work was perfection,” Kelly says. This attention to craftsmanship carries into even the smallest spaces. In the powder room, a waterjet-cut marble floor creates an intricate pattern of magnolia-like petals. “Everybody who walks into the house almost gets down on their hands and knees and touches that floor because it’s so beautiful,” Sarah says.

“There was a lot of camaraderie—it was all very cohesive,” they say. “It just flowed.” ROOM FOR A VIEW Sarah saw the potential in the house immediately, particularly upon arrival. From the front door, the eye travels through the house toward Indian River Bay. “I had a vision for that space,” she relates. So did the buyers. “We wanted the view to take over from the time you come up the front steps to the time you leave.” The exterior footprint remained, but the first floor was gutted to the studs and extensively reconfigured. Windows were resized and replaced. NuCedar siding, roofing and trim refreshed the exterior, while a new deck and streamlined railing opened sightlines toward the bay. Inside, Sarah shifted the home away from the owners’ previous high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic toward something softer. “They were very focused on having a calm, coastal feel, but they were very specific—they wanted it to be luxury,” Sarah says. “They did not want it to be beachy.” A muted color palette, subtle texture and quietly sophisticated materials answered the call. Eight-inch-wide white oak floors stretch through the first floor. Woven rattan inserts lend texture to cabinetry, and fabric wallcovering threaded with hints of blue adds depth. “Every piece and part was completely custom,” Kelly says.

CENTERPIECE In the kitchen, one element came first: the range hood. Sarah showed the owner an image of a curved metal hood combining warm and cool finishes. It clicked immediately and became the foundation for the kitchen, much like choosing a piece of art or an area rug and building a room around it. She calls the custom piece “the jewelry” of the kitchen. From there, other selections fell into place, including range knobs that repeat its mixed metals, Plain & Fancy cabinetry and a marble picket backsplash selected after the team studied multiple possibilities through 3D renderings. Behind closed doors, walnut interiors inject warmth. A concealed coffee bar opens when family and friends gather, then disappears behind retractable doors when not in use. The effect is precisely what the owners wanted. “When we close up the kitchen, everything is in its place,” the owner says. “We like a clean, simple look.” MOODY BLUE Clean and serene may characterize much of the house, but tucked just beyond the kitchen is a deliberate departure. It evolved from what had been a butler's pantry and passageway. The team opened the surrounding area and turned the space into a dramatic destination with a speakeasy vibe. Deep blue saturates the cabinetry and walls. Walnut adds richness. Oversized squares of Bardiglio and Carrara marble create a checkerboard floor. The room is polished and unapologetically different—exactly as intended. And all of this is tucked behind a partially obscured glass door. The color offers just enough of a glimpse from the kitchen to pique curiosity. Even the margarita maker gets a moment. Concealed inside the cabinetry, it rises on a hydraulic lift when cocktail hour calls. The decision to fully saturate the space evolved along with the room. After the owners saw a similarly enveloping blue space in a Northern Virginia show house, they decided to commit to color on both the cabinetry and walls. Achieving a seamless match took some doing. “It took us five or six tries with Benjamin Moore to get a perfect match between the walls and cabinets,” Kelly says of the custom Plain & Fancy cabinetry color. As for what to call the one-of-a-kind blue? One collaborator suggested, “Blue Knight.”

MASTERING A PLAN The first phase may be complete, but this house is still a work in progress. Work is underway upstairs, where bedrooms and bathrooms are being reimagined. Eventually, the third floor will become a wellness retreat with a gym, sauna and massage room. The owners don't seem to mind that the project continues. They describe themselves as “serial renovators,” and for them, the process is part of the pleasure. Still, nothing quite compared to seeing the completed first floor for the first time. They had followed construction remotely through weekly videos and photos, watching demolition, discoveries and craftsmanship unfold almost like a documentary. Sarah's detailed 3D renderings had allowed them to visualize choices long before they existed. But renderings only go so far. When they finally walked through the finished space, both admitted to happy tears. “We pinch ourselves,” the owner says. “We're so proud of what this team did.”CS

he cottage was charming. The problem was that this family had already outgrown it. With three teenagers, three dogs and a steady stream of friends, the owners quickly realized the original Bethany Beach cottage they purchased shortly after the pandemic wasn’t quite big enough for the way they wanted to spend their summers. More importantly, they recognized that this particular season of family life wouldn’t last forever. “We knew we had a short window with our kids,” says the owner, whose children are now 19, 19 and 17. “We wanted to be able to enjoy it in those last years of high school and hopefully through summers before and during college.” So, they started over, enlisting the help of Miken Builders and Denise Perkins, lead interior designer at Bountiful Interiors. In place of the three-bedroom cottage, they built a three-level retreat designed around togetherness: plenty of bedrooms for family and guests, a bunk room for overflow, spaces where teenagers could claim some territory of their own and a

generous screened-in porch where everyone inevitably ends up. The vision: coastal and accommodating. “We always have a lot of kids at our house—both at home and at the beach,” the owner says. “I wanted to sleep as many people as we could, and I wanted everyone to have a bathroom.” TRUE BLUE The color story began before the new house did. The owner had spotted a particular shade of blue while in Annapolis and snapped a photo. Translating a color captured on a phone into cabinetry proved less straightforward. Bountiful Interiors scoured paint samples, sifting through 24 different shades before landing on the right one: Sherwin-Williams Undercool. The clear, spirited blue now enlivens the kitchen island and bar cabinetry and establishes a visual thread throughout the home. Thus, the name of the home: Blue Tide Retreat. “It took many tries to get the correct shade of blue,” Denise says. “But that color definitely set the tone.” From there, she layered in softer blues, grays and whites, then warmed the palette with natural materials. “Blues and grays tend to be very cool, so it was important to bring in warmth through natural textures like rattan and raffia,” Denise explains. Guided by designer Oras Al-Bakry, woven pendant lights, a natural window shade and cane stools balance the saturated kitchen island. White perimeter cabinetry and Silestone Ethereal Dusk countertops keep the space light, while a softly curved white

backsplash tile extends all the way to the ceiling, including behind the floating shelves. “I like this effect, as there is no halfway point that stops the eye,” Denise says. Even a mix-up became a happy design turn. The owner originally envisioned the floating shelves in natural wood. They arrived blue. “Denise was like, ‘Just look at them,’” the owner recalls. Once they were installed, there was no going back. “I really loved it!” A LITTLE PERSUASION Blue may have been the starting point, but Denise wasn’t content to stop there. “She got me to add some green, which was out of my comfort zone,” the owner says. The nudge paid off. In one bathroom, a lively blue-and-green combination turns walls and the ceiling into a playful cocoon of pattern. “I love a punch of color and pattern in powder rooms and bathrooms,” Denise says. Wallpaper also delivers one of the home's defining moments at the wet bar, where Thibaut’s Heron Stream brings movement and personality to the compact space. The selection required some persuasion, as did the choice of a turquoise beaded Currey & Company chandelier hanging in the main stairwell. Denise saw a connection between the two that could carry the palette beyond individual rooms. “It took a little convincing, but in the end my client was thrilled,” she says. “I like creating that continuity.” That approach plays out throughout the home. Rather than relying on overtly nautical motifs, Denise used color, texture and selective pattern to give the interior a coastal ease. Even the ceilings got much-deserved attention. Coffering in the great room gives definition to the expansive open space and creates a subtle transition between the kitchen, dining and living areas. In guest bedrooms, ceiling treatments serve a different purpose, making rooms with generous height feel cozier. “High ceilings add the feeling of space and height, but in my opinion can sometimes feel too open, especially in a bedroom,” Denise says. The bunk room embraces this with a wink. “It’s always a fun space to be a little whimsical, so we created a sky feeling by painting the ceiling in a very soft blue to complement the blue, geometric wallpaper,” Denise explains, noting how the wallcovering mimics nautical flags. BUILT FOR REAL LIFE Pretty was important; precious was not. “We live hard in our house between the kids, the dogs, and the friends coming over,” the owner says. “Everything had to be able to withstand all of that.” Denise knew the house would also occasionally

serve as a vacation rental, adding another layer of practicality to the selections. Serviceable fabrics and rugs were essential, as were materials that could handle sandy feet, wet swimsuits and the general wear and tear of beach life. “Form follows function,” Denise says, before admitting with a laugh, “Sometimes this is difficult for me. I always want beauty first.” Here, the two coexist. The layout does some heavy lifting, including spaces devoted to the daily ritual

of coming home from the beach, just a fiveminute walk away. Outdoor showers, fencing, towel storage and a lower-level entrance keep much of the sand and beach gear contained before anyone heads upstairs. The family's bedrooms are positioned on the upper level, creating welcome separation from the activity below when someone is ready to turn in. A lower-level space with a television and Ping-Pong table gives the kids their own gathering spot. “We use every inch of that house,” the owner says.

PORCH LIFE There was one thing the owner knew she wanted from the beginning. “All I ever wanted was a daybed swing,” she says. Suspended on the screened-in porch, the oversized swing has become perhaps the most coveted seat in the house. The owners spend a significant amount of their time outdoors, so the porch was designed as another living room rather than an afterthought. The blue palette extends from the great room onto the porch, while indoor-outdoor materials there stand up to sun and weather. Wicker rockers invite lingering, and a large dining table accommodates family meals, games and the extra friends who inevitably show up. And then there’s the breeze. Denise points to the porch’s east-west exposure, which keeps air moving through the space and makes the daybed an especially tempting place for an afternoon nap or reading session. Getting the spot to yourself might be the challenge. “It is the most popular place in our house,” the owner says. “Everyone wants to sit on the swing—the dogs, my kids’ friends…” All of this seems fitting for a house conceived around a fleeting stage of family life and built to make the most of it. The kids are getting older. Summers come and go. But for now, there is a house near the beach with room for everyone—and, if guests are lucky, an open spot on the swing. The owner says, “We had a general vision of what we wanted, and Denise brought it to life.” CS

aterfront living comes naturally on Kent Island. Sunset Wharf takes it up a notch, pairing the island’s relaxed Eastern Shore lifestyle with 28 luxury residences at Bay Bridge Marina, where expansive views and marina access meet a decidedly elevated experience. The development also marks new territory for Kent Island, with homes in the first phase selling for more than $2.3 million. Yet for the team behind Sunset Wharf, raising the bar wasn’t about departing from the character of the island. It was about designing something that belonged there. “There was already an established energy there that I felt like I had to honor,” says Tessea McCrary, founder and principal designer of Tessea McCrary Interior Design. “Instead of trying to invent something totally new, we asked, ‘How do we lean in and nod to what’s already there?’” Tessea spent time experiencing Kent Island and the waterfront before developing the interior design program, tuning into the sense of place that has long defined the community. Working with Fisher Architecture, developer Petrie Ventures and McGrath Builders Inc., she translated that understanding into interiors that are refined but easy to live in, timeless rather than trendy, and subtly coastal without relying on predictable nautical references. “We wanted the new build to feel like the best part of returning home after a long day,” Tessea says. LOOKING OUT From the beginning, Tessea and the project team studied the plans for opportunities to strengthen the connection between indoors and outdoors. Windows and doors were enlarged wherever possible. Sightlines were carefully considered. In the primary bath, for instance, the team moved and enlarged a window so homeowners can see the marina while soaking in the tub. “We made sure to experience those moments,” Tessea says. “Where will the homeowner be sitting in the living area? How will they move about the kitchen? Then we configured the floor plan to showcase the home’s greatest selling point: the view.” Similar thinking informs the layout and interior design throughout the Sunset Wharf residences. Nearly every room maintains a visual relationship with the water.

And, Tessea points out, the duplex architecture naturally emphasizes long horizontal lines, pulling the eye through the home and toward the waterfront. She embraced that movement while introducing vertical elements to create balance. Lighting, fireplaces and millwork draw the eye upward. In a dramatic move, nickel gap shiplap wraps the elevator beside the grand staircase and rises through all three levels, creating a continuous architectural thread that culminates in a statement chandelier overhead. The effect is subtle but intentional: look outside, look upward, then look back toward the bay. “These decisions became about more than just materials,” she says. “The vertical cues are a visual thread—a connection throughout the entire house.” SIMPLY SOPHISTICATED If connection to the water guided the architecture, longevity drove many of the material choices. “Luxury homes shouldn’t feel trendy,” Tessea maintains. “And everything needed to be refined and luxurious without feeling precious.” Natural materials provide the foundation. Quartzite brings practicality and a clean finish to kitchen surfaces, while oak cabinetry adds warmth and character. Tessea expects both materials to look just as relevant years from now. One of the most significant edits involved the kitchen island. Early drawings called for a waterfall edge, a sleek detail Tessea ultimately felt was too contemporary for the home. More importantly, it made the island read as an object rather than an integral part of the architecture. Instead, she gave it the presence of a freestanding piece of furniture. Stained oak distinguishes the island from the painted perimeter cabinetry, while substantial wood end panels lend weight and permanence. A combination of polish and practicality carries through the residence. These are homes designed for people who might come through the door carrying boat bags, coolers or sandy gear. On the ground level, a flexible living space with a wet bar creates a natural landing spot. Timelessness rules. Tessea says, “These homes are designed to become multigenerational in keeping with Kent Island tradition.” A SENSE OF PLACE There are blues, of course. But you won’t find a house filled with anchors, ropes and other expected signals that scream coastal. Instead, references to the bay reveal themselves quietly. In the primary bath, a feature wall behind the mirrors is covered in large-format porcelain tile with an ombré effect in shades of blue and a wave-like pattern. The effect reflects the water outside without being too obvious. “We wanted people to have that waterfront feeling and a sense of place,” Tessea says. This distinction was important. Kent Island has its own identity, and Tessea wanted the interiors to belong to it rather than impose a stylized version of coastal living upon it. For residences not yet constructed, opportunities for customization extend to room planning, materials and finishes. Decorative lighting brings another opportunity for personality, as homeowners can select fixtures from a curated collection from Visual Comfort. Now, as the community takes shape, Tessea can see how the
