Nestled in the heart of the Nerang River, Chevron Island is a cherished part of the Gold Coast’s vibrant community. Long before it became the lively neighborhood you now call home, it was known as Goat Island, a natural landform used as a cattle farm where goats roamed freely, helping to manage the area’s tough vegetation.
In the 1950s, Chevron Island was transformed through land reclamation—adding sand and earth to elevate its shape and form. During this process, it was physically separated from the mainland where the famous Home of the Arts (HOTA) now stands, creating a unique island environment right in the river.
The Nerang River once meandered wide and shallow, dotted with shifting sandbanks, making navigation tricky. Over the decades, dredging and river engineering turned this natural waterway into a navigable channel, with the sand used to develop the island and other land in the area. Early ferry crossings linked the island to Surfers Paradise, helping to establish it as a lively community hub.
Almost everyone who moves to Chevron Island finds it hard to leave. Locals treasure the unique lifestyle, friendly community, and beautiful natural surroundings that make this little island so special. It’s a place where neighbours quickly become friends, and the charm of island living creates a true sense of home.
