Madden launches campaign with Millville event By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter For the first time in more than a decade, there will be a Democratic challenger for the 38th District seat in the Delaware House of Representatives. Dagsboro resident Maureen “Mo” Madden announced her candidacy Friday, Aug. 22, at the Millville Community Center in Evans Park. Madden, 60,

announced her candidacy in front of about 150 supporters, with special guest U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) in attendance. The 38th District includes Millville, Ocean View, Bethany Beach, South Bethany, Fenwick Island, Selbyville, Dagsboro and part of Frankford, stretching from the Indian River Inlet to the Delaware-Maryland state line. Madden, 60, a retired NASA physi-

cist, sat down with the Coastal Point last week to discuss her candidacy. She started a career with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in 1991 and worked there for 27 years, she said. From there, she moved to NOAA, where she worked on ground systems. “I built instruments. I built ground systems. I managed operations at NASA, and then when I went over to NOAA, I was working on a new, big

ground system for them. I became acting director for the office that manages all the meteorologists and oceanographers who get the remote satellite data,” she said. That data gets converted into equations that allow weather services to better forecast the weather and analyze other things, such as water quality and See MADDEN page 5

Selbyville to honor ‘Hometown Heroes’ By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter Selbyville resident Howard Murray — who spent his career in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam — will be among the military veterans honored at the Hometown Heroes event, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company fire hall. Each veteran will be honored or, if the hero is deceased, family members will be introduced. Throughout town, 57 Hometown Heroes banners — flags with photos of local veterans — have been hung. The 30-by-60-inch banners have photographs of veterans and active-duty military personnel who have a family or historical connection to Selbyville. They are printed on both sides of durable material and also have each service member’s name, military branch and era of service. “This is the first time we have done this ceremony, and we are very excited See HEROES page 7

IRHS expansion a big plan — maybe next year instead By Laura Walter Staff Reporter Indian River High School has more than 1,000 students enrolled, and the school district has plans to add to classrooms and expand its culinary arts program. But the State hasn’t been approving such projects lately.

In fact, “Eleven core curriculum teachers are currently without a permanent classroom and are on mobile carts,” said IRSD Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds W. Joseph Dooley. “And 30 give up their classrooms for another class during at least one semester,” thus losing their planning-period space. The Indian River School District has

been pitching a plan that would include a small addition with eight new core subject classrooms, plus a large addition for the career-technical education (CTE) programs, including the newest culinary arts expansion. For such projects, districts must receive State approval and major capital construction funding, but the State has

made it clear that the project money will not happen this year. But IRSD is at least going through the motions to keep this project at the forefront of state officials’ minds. “If the State approves the CN [Certificate of Necessity], the school is See IRHS page 6
