beach and dunes in October. “The Town has been having continuing discussions with DNREC and, as of an hour ago, DNREC said they will have equipment here … and should get at least three of the crossovers open by the Thanksgiving holiday — so thank you, DNREC,” Calef said. “They will be harvesting sand from
the beach and surf, with some possible other sources,” he noted, “and they will be beefing up the dunes, but we’re not sure how much will happen. This is a remedial repair, and a full-fledged replenishment is still in question,” he cautioned, “with federal funding being the way it is. Hopefully, our nor’easters won’t be as severe, so we’ll see how it goes.”

By Laura Walter Staff Reporter The Indian River School District will be adding a school day back to the calendar next month. Students were originally staying home on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, while staff had a professional learning day. But now, students will report to school for regular learning that day. Schools were closed during October storm flooding, so the IRSD is replacing a professional development day with student learning. “Our PD days are very important,” said Superintendent Jay Owens. “We work hard to embed them into our calendar. However, there’s no substitute for having teachers in front of kids.” Jan. 14 will add classroom time “when we are in our stride,” about two weeks before high school exams and the end of semester, Owens said. Districts also add “snow days” by adding extra days to the calendar in June. But, realistically, most lessons, competitions, concerts, SATs, AP exams, and even graduation, are wrapping up by then. Safety on the minds of Frankford residents regarding intersections By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter Improvements meant to boost safe crossings at intersections on Route 113 have some in Frankford concerned
about unintended impacts to public safety. In August, representatives from DelDOT and the engineering firm Whitman, Requardt & Associates presented a traffic study focusing on in-
tersections along Route 113 in Frankford. The study specifically targeted intersections that do not have traffic lights. Before the update from Whitman, Requardt & Associates, Town Man-
ager Sheldon Hudson said, “WRA and DelDOT have been great to work with and responsive” on the proposed intersection changes, which were inSee FRANKFORD page A7
