By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter Fenwick Island’s Charter & Ordinance Committee this week considered moves addressing business parking and potential election changes. The committee opted to forward a recommendation to the Fenwick Island Town Council for consideration at its Friday, May 23, meeting that would allow businesses to work with each other to solve issues regarding employee parking. The recommendation that the council will consider includes allowing for the exchange of money between businesses in exchange for use of parking on their respective lots. Current town code prohibits monetary payment between businesses for use of their parking lots. The concept at the root of the issue is allowing businesses that are busiest at night to use for employee parking the parking lots of businesses that are busier during the day. The money issue has been the major sticking point in moving the idea forward. See FENWICK page A3

From their posts at Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234’s Chicken Shack, a hardy band of volunteers worked their magic on racks of chicken halves this weekend as passersby honked in appreciation of the sure sign that the summer season is here. The Chicken Shack reopened Saturday, May 17, for the season — once again taking up its position at the front of the Delaware National Guard facility on Coastal Highway at the northern entrance to Bethany Beach. A fixture on Coastal Highway since the 1960s, the shack had previously been located where the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company now sits, as well as in front of the Bethany Beach Christian Church grounds. Since the late 1970s, the shack has been located at the front of the Delaware National Guard facility, according to shack “Boss” Ken Weber. It was rebuilt several years ago after being damaged in a hurricane, and Weber said he is grateful for the new, larger grilling Coastal Point • Kerin Magill space. ‘Chicken Lady’ Sandra Magera greets visitors at the Mason-Dixon Post 7234 Chicken Shack on “They gave me my Coastal Highway in Bethany Beach. dream,” Weber said, with two more grill masters to regulate the heat generated in the large rectansections than the previous grill had, for a total of seven. The gular firebox. new grill also added firebrick to the cinderblock construction of the older one, he said, making it easier for the grillSee SHACK page A9
