Community readies for a Night to Shine By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter A cheering crowd known as “the paparazzi” will be outside Ocean View Church of Christ on Friday evening, cheering for the young women and men who arrive at Night to Shine, a prom for the developmentally disabled, featuring formalwear, dinner and dancing.
Guests 14 or older will walk on a red carpet into the church, where, before the prom, they will have their hair styled, makeup perfected and shoes shined, then enjoy dinner, a table brimming with desserts, dancing and, later, the crowning of each of them as prom king and prom queen. “Night to Shine is one of the highlights of the year. As somebody who puts on a lot of different events, it takes an incredible amount of work to do this, but it is such a good thing to do for the community,” Ocean View Police Chief Kenneth McLaughin said. He and officers regularly attend, dance and interact with the guests. The police department is “always
honored to participate in this event, that provides a memorable prom experience for individuals with special needs, fostering a sense of community and inclusion,” McLaughlin said. “Everybody loves Night to Shine,” the Rev. Ethan Magee, church pastor, added. See SHINE page 3

By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter A car wash to be located on Route 26 has received a green light from the Millville Town Council. Gander Car Wash received conditional-use approval in May 2023 for the new business, to be located west of Millville Volunteer Fire Company Station No. 1, at 35528 Atlantic Avenue. Preliminary site plans were approved in April 2024. Property owner John Sovero appeared at the Tuesday, Jan. 28, town council meeting with project engineer Casey Rauch and revised plans to reflect changes that had to be made in the site’s stormwater management. Sovero said construction should begin on the car wash this month. The council on Jan. 28 also held three public hearings: on an ordinance addressing trees in subdivisions, on signage in the commercial district and on an annexation of mostly pieces of parcels in a development that was built in the 1970s. The tree ordinance was tabled last See MILLVILLE page 6

Millsboro residents speak out on traffic, clean water By Maddy Lauria Special to the Coastal Point Ongoing concerns about traffic safety and congestion, driven in large part by ongoing development in the
Millsboro area, were repeatedly in the spotlight at Monday night’s Millsboro Town Council meeting. During a public hearing to review a request for preliminary approval of a major subdivision for the proposed
Towne Lakes development, area residents raised concerns about the potential for traffic safety issues for the roadways near where developers propose to build 450 new housing units. For Gloria Duffy — who, along with
her siblings, inherited her mother’s adjacent property and whose family still farms land nearby — the development is indicative of a broader changing landSee MILLSBORO page 7
