Beaches shut down over medical waste, trash By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter Coastal towns from Virginia to Delaware are continuing to monitor beach conditions after days of closures due to medical waste washing up on their shorelines. The source of the waste remained un-

known as of the Coastal Point’s press deadline on Wednesday. Locally, Bethany Beach, South Bethany and Fenwick Island all closed their beaches to swimming last weekend due to reports of hypodermic needles, needle caps and other medical waste being found on the beaches. On Monday, the Town of Bethany

Fenwick Island town manager leaves post

Beach issued a statement that in light of recent events, “the Town has decided to close the beach until further notice.” “We are still closed,” Fenwick Island Mayor Natalie Magdeburger said on Tuesday. She added that “a few” syringes had washed up on Monday but said she had not gotten any reports of anything after

that. Some of the syringes had caps and some didn’t, she said. There were also loose syringe caps washing up, according to Magdeburger. Magdeburger noted that DNREC had posted a swimming advisory that runs through Monday, Sept. 21. See BEACHES page 3

Pure joy

By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter After seven months on the job, Fenwick Island’s town manager has parted ways with the Town, according to Mayor Natalie Magdeburger. Lori Dabbondanza, who took over the position from Patricia Schuchman in February, left that job earlier this month, Magdeburger said. She called the move a “mutual parting of the Dabbondanza ways” and would not comment further on the circumstances of Dabbondanza’s departure. Magdeburger said there are no immediate plans to replace Dabbondanza. Instead, she said, Town Clerk Erin Ellinger will oversee day-to-day operations. Town committees made up of council members and residents will oversee specific areas of Town operations. For example, she said, Fenwick Island’s Infrastructure Committee will oversee the Public Works Department and the Building & Code Department. See FENWICK page 5

Community rallies behind injured Selbyville teen By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter From the bedside of his 16-year-old son — in critical condition and sedated

after being struck by a speeding motorcyclist in Ocean City, Md., last weekend — Cory Walsh asked for prayers and good thoughts. “It’s going to take a miracle for this

one,” Walsh, the father of three — whose wife, Rhonda, died from sarcoma cancer in October 2022 — said quietly. “His doctors say he’s stable, but he’s very critical and there are many more

surgeries to go,” Walsh — vice president and loan and business development officer at Taylor Bank in Ocean View — See TEEN page 4
