Trucks driving through Millsboro still a concern By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter When it comes to the new Millsboro bypass, now under construction, a frequently asked question is: Will tractortrailers carrying live chickens to Mountaire Farms, just east of town, still travel through the quaint downtown?
U.S. Wind addresses comments made at county hearing
That question came up, as it has been for months, during an informational meeting about progress on the bypass last week, and Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) civil engineer George Pierce told the audience there won’t be a “No Trucks Through Town” stipulation. Implementing a “No Trucks” rule is
“on the radar, but enforcement is an issue,” Pierce said. “It’s an enforcement issue that puts a lot of pressure on the local police. It’s a constant battle, but there will be no reason for trucks to go through town, so the first step is to build it and see how it works,” Pierce said. He has worked for DelDOT 16
years, and he and engineers designing and building the bypass live in the area, just as residents concerned about trucks do, and they understand the frustrations, he said. “A lot of the problems you bring up See BYPASS page 4
Waves for everybody
By Mike Smith Staff Reporter A proposed conditional-use zoning application filed by Renewable Redevelopment LLC — a U.S. Wind subsidiary — for a substation near the Indian River power plant had passed easily through the July 10 Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission process, with no opposition testimony. However, the full Sussex County Council held a hearing on July 30 to review the application to construct a large electric substation in Sussex County, off Irons Branch Road, with about 50 people expressing opposition. The hearing took four hours, and there were no proponents of the wind project who spoke at that time, except for the U.S. Wind representative and their legal counsel. The substation would be a key part of U.S. Wind’s offshore wind project, which includes plans to place up to 121 wind turbines 12 miles off the coast of Ocean City, Md. The substation would receive four cables from the offshore Special to the Coastal Point • Butch Comegys

Van Horn appointed to South Bethany Town Council seat By Mike Smith Staff Reporter Cindy Van Horn, who lives on S. Anchorage Street in South Bethany, was appointed this week to the South
Bethany Town Council seat vacated by Edie Dondero when Dondero was elected mayor. Van Horn has served for several years on the Town’s Budget & Finance Committee along with Treasurer Randy
Bartholomew, who nominated her for the open council position. The council vote on the appointment was 4 to 2, with two council members — Robert Shields and Tim Shaw — nominating and voting for Glenn Tom because of
his service on the Town’s bicycle safety committee. “We were fortunate to have two excellent candidates apply for the vacant See SEAT page 4
