The Southern Sussex Rotary displayed flags outside Lord Baltimore Elementary School on Wednesday, May 22, as they take part in their annual Flags for Heroes effort. The VFW will also hold its ceremony on the Bethany boardwalk on Monday.

Saturday, two days before Memorial Day, the lifeguards go out to their stands, ready for the summer crowds. From full-timers to part-timers, seasoned veterans to first-years, lieutenants to crew chiefs and, of course, the captain, they all prepare themselves for whatever might happen out there. Joe Donnelly is in his 20th year as captain of the Bethany Beach Patrol (BBP). The summer of 1993 was Donnelly’s first as a lifeguard. At the time, Tim Ferry was in his third year as captain, and the BBP was in its 60th year of service. Donnelly was promoted to lieutenant in 1995 and took over as captain in 2004, after Ferry became the head of the Fenwick Island Beach Patrol. The captain is in charge of the entire agency. By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter Delaware Register of Wills Greg Fuller — retired as first sergeant after more than 20 years in the U.S. Army and the first African-American elected to a countywide office in Sussex County — will be the guest speaker at two Memorial Day events this week: the Southern Sussex Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes event at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234 in Ocean View, and the annual Memorial Day Service on the Bethany Beach bandstand. Flags for Heroes is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, and the Memorial Day Service will be on the Bethany Beach bandstand at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27. “There are so many heroes that walk among us that have, for many years, kept us safe while we slept. This is our time to honor those who deserve to be thanked,” Flags for Heroes Events Chairman Steve Cropper said, adding that this is the 10th year the event has been presented.

About 250 flags are flying on Route 113 near Blades HVAC Services in Dagsboro and at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View. Each flag was sponsored for $50 by those who wanted to honor a veteran or hero. Proceeds will benefit the community, including the Family Assistance Program for veterans, “so if you’re deployed and your refrigerator breaks down back home while you’re in Afghanistan in a foxhole, you don’t have to worry about that,” Cropper said. “We take care of many community needs — things like, there is a camp for developmentally disabled kids that we sponsor, and we also sponsor an Easter Seals camp for the developmentally disabled, a respite camp that gives parents a week of rest while the children are off enjoying themselves,” he said. At Flags for Heroes, VFW Post Commander James Jensen and Rotary Club member Scott Smith will welcome guests. The program includes the presentation of colors by the VFW 7234 Post Honor Guard, “Pledge of Allegiance” and national anthem sung by Jennifer Carter See MEMORIAL DAY page A4
