By Mike Smith Staff Reporter Col. Anita West-Werner is running against Joshua Hudson for the Indian River School District Board of Education seat representing District 4. Both candidates said this week that they’re concerned about voter turnout. West-Werner said she continues to hear the same concerning thing on the campaign trail — the idea that members of the public who don’t have school-aged children do not need to vote on May 14 in the statewide election for school board members in multiple districts. Throughout Delaware, 480,742 residents were eligible to vote in last year’s school board elections. From that number, only 20,494 votes were cast, only a See CANDIDATES page 4
Spotlight turns to Spring Fling By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter Spring, actor Robin Williams joked, is “nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party,’” and that’s the plan for Saturday, May 4, when the Town of Ocean View will present its annual Spring Fling, from 1 to 4 p.m. at John West Park. A Mother’s Day Market will be open, bubbles will float by, children will create bug-eye and monarch butterfly crafts, and frolic in an obstacle course and bounce house. There will be face painting and visits from costumed characters including “the Easter Bunny on Spring Break.” Charlie and the CoolTones will perform. After 40 years of business, Robinson family set for new course By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter “Thank You. We Love You.” The sign at the front of the Ocean View Produce stand at the end of summer 2023 might have seemed a little different than previous years. Residents, in particular, might have taken note of the absence of the usual “See You Next Year” message. For 28 years, Jimmy and Danita Robinson have been a perennial presence on the north side of Route 26 near Lord Baltimore Elementary School. And for 12 years before that, Jimmy Robinson and his family had operated a stand on the property at the old Summer Place motel, which was owned by his grandparents. This year, however, the produce stand that Jimmy and Danita Robinson operated, along with family members and loyal employees, for all those years will not open.
The Robinsons found out last summer that the property was being put up for sale and decided “it was time” to call it a day, Danita Robinson said. Before that, she said, the family had been starting to talk about having a “big to-do” to celebrate 40 years in business. The celebration was, she said, to include music and food, and the idea was simply to thank the community for its support over the years. “We were just going to let everyone in the area know, and the people passing through, that, ‘Hey, we’re still here, and we made it — 40 years. And, you know, thanks to you,’” she said. “We’re not going to get that,” she said, adding quickly that she and Jimmy still want to let the community know how grateful they are. She is also quick to point out that the idea for the stand was Jimmy’s from the start. “It was your brainstorm,” she said, nodding to her husband. “This was Jimmy’s idea.” “It started out the back of a pickup.
