DESA renews promise for offshore wind power By Mike Smith Staff Reporter A new bill called the Delaware Energy Solutions Act (DESA) was introduced in the state senate last week. It envisions a carbon-free future for the state, with a goal of a net-zero emissions standard for energy production in Delaware.
Millville budget up for vote
After a recent decision by Ørsted to abandon its Maryland offshore wind provision commitment off the coast of Ocean City, Md., due to inflation, supply-chain issues and the terms of the contract with the State of Maryland, this new Delaware legislation provides hope for proponents of wind-based renewable energy. State Sen. Stephanie L. Hansen (D-
10th) is chair of the Senate Energy & Transportation Committee. She has a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in earth science. Hansen on April 18 introduced the new bill on offshore wind to review pricing options and potentially bring renewable wind energy to the state. After an initial bipartisan exploratory
panel called the “stakeholders’ group,” chartered to look at wind options, Hansen was able to garner six co-sponsors in the General Assembly. There are also four additional senate sponsors, including state Sens. Russ Huxtable (District 6), Kyle Gay (District 5) and Jack

The next generation
By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter The Town of Millville’s 2025-fiscalyear budget, scheduled for a vote next week on its passage, contains no increases in taxes or fees and could see the Town picking up the existing $50-perhousehold annual ambulance fee. The budget, which was reviewed by the council on Friday, April 19, and was the subject of a public hearing on Tuesday, April 23, shows projected revenue of just over $2 million, compared to 2024-fiscal-year revenues of $1.5 million — representing a 31 percent increase in revenue. Next year’s budget, meanwhile, projects expenses to drop slightly from last year, from $1.14 million to $1.04 million, according to the draft document prepared by Finance Director Will Mumford. At the Tuesday hearing, there were no comments from the public — written, in person or online. Council Treasurer Joseph Parent proposed that the Town pick up the $50 Coastal Point • Susan Lyons
