Selbyville votes to impose rental tax

By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter By unanimous vote, the Selbyville Town Council this week amended the town code to impose a 2-percent gross receipts tax on all rental income of occupancy of any private and public lodging facilities and housing accommodations. Accommodations include rooms, rooming houses, boarding housing, bedand-breakfast inns, cottages, cabins, houses, duplexes, apartments, stores, garages, warehouses and commercial buildings or structures that rent or lease space. The council amended Chapter 166, Taxation, and added a new Article II, Gross Receipts Rental Tax. “Several towns impose taxes on rentals,” Town Administrator Stacey Long told the council at the Monday, April 8, meeting. She said 2 percent seemed to be the average amount imposed, after polling several nearby towns. She said income from the tax will “offset the cost of code inspectors who conduct inspections” and that inspec-

Kern named a finalist for James Beard Foundation award One Coastal’s Kern breaks through after previous nominations By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter Fenwick Island restaurateur Matt Kern has joined the exclusive field of finalists for the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards. He is the first Delaware chef to do so. Kern, one of the chefs named as finalists for the Mid-Atlantic region, owns One Coastal restaurant in Fenwick Island. Although he has been nominated as a semi-finalist twice before, this is the first time he has made

it to the list of finalists. Reached this week at his restaurant, Kern recalled the moment last week when he read the news in a social media post. “I had woken up, made coffee and mentally prepared myself ” for the announcement he knew was coming. Kern said he told himself, “You did great. It was nice while it lasted. Let’s get back to reality here,” as he waited for the list to be released. “Ten o’clock came around, and I was like, ‘OK, we’ll take a look.’ I pulled up Instagram, and they had just announced it.
