In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. T
he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. The

unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. s you read this, large schools of tarpon are making their way to the pristine waters of Franklin County, Fla. They’re hungry, and once here, they’ll be taking full advantage of the pogies, mullet and crabs that these waters are so rich with. For anyone considering a place for the adventure of a lifetime, look no further. This is a place where the entire family can get a wide variety of fishing experiences: from the technical tarpon on the fly, to the simple trout on a live shrimp and everything in between! Capt. Access to places like Gulf of Mexico, St. George and Dog Islands, Apalachicola Bay and St. George Sound are quick and easy. First-timers to the area are encouraged to hire a seasoned guide, but this area offers so many options that almost anyone can load a livewell with shrimp or pogies and catch something. Knoxville To Host 2019 Bassmaster Classic On The Tennessee River
F
or the first time in its 49-year history, the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods will be held on the Tennessee River out of Knoxville. The “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” will be held March 15-17 in downtown Knoxville and on The University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus. “Knoxville meets and exceeds all the requirements we have for the Bassmaster Classic—great fishing on the Tennessee River, first-class facilities to accommodate crowds of fishing fans, a vibrant city with plenty to see and do, and a corps of state and local tourism professionals who will ensure its success,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. The Bassmaster Classic pits 50 of the world’s best bass anglers against one another for shares of the $1 million purse, including $300,000 for the winner. Jordan Lee, of Grant, Ala., a 26-year-old former college fishing champion, is the current defending Classic champion after becoming the youngest ever—and one of only three in history—to win back-to-back titles.
Lee is guaranteed the right to defend his title. Other anglers will spend the rest of this season trying to qualify from several B.A.S.S. circuits, including the prestigious Bassmaster Elite Series. Tournament waters include Fort Loudoun and Tellico lakes, twin reservoirs connected by a canal and comprising about 30,000 acres. Competitors can fish either lake and anywhere along the Tennessee River upstream from Fort Loudoun Dam to the Interstate 40 bridge on the Holston River and the Highway 168 bridge on the French Broad River. B.A.S.S. Nation Championship tournaments for top-ranked amateur club fishermen were held on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in 1998 and 2000, but B.A.S.S. has never held a professional bass tournament on that section of the Tennessee River. “Anglers can expect to catch good numbers of bass in Fort Loudoun and have the potential of catching some above-average smallmouth,” said Bart Carter, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Region 4 fisheries manager. “Largemouth will be the go-to fish for both reservoirs.” Bass heavier than 7 pounds are not uncommon in early spring, and a one-day tournament held on Fort Loudoun a year ago was won with a 27 1/2-pound limit of five bass, which is considered a game-changing catch in any fishery. The Classic is a catch-and-release event, with bass being returned to the fishery under the supervision of the TWRA. The 2018 Classic saw a 99.7 percent survival rate among the bass weighed in. Daily takeoffs will be from Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville, and weigh-ins will take place in the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus. The fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoor Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods will be held Friday through Sunday, March 1517, in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. For the past decade, combined attendance at Classic venues has averaged more than 100,000 per year, and the event typically generates about $25 million in economic impact. Wrightsville Beach fishing...May is when it really gets cranked up! Many different species of fish start to show up and it’s when I feel like summer fishing has really started! As the weather stabilizes and the temps go up in early May we see a lot more days where we can get out in the ocean and look for those high speed and good-eating bonita (maybe even the latter part of April this year) and Spanish mackerel all May long. These fish are a lot of fun to see busting the surface of the water and even more fun to see on the end of your line! Casting small spoons or using fly gear in six- to eight-weights can make for a great challenge on this light tackle. Look for these fish to be hanging around nearshore artificial reefs, ledges and inlets. Trolling Clark spoons and small deep-diving lures can be the key to success some days for the bonita and Spanish mackerel. When using the Clark spoons, I recommend the pink flash spoon in sizes #00, #0 and #1; this pink flash series has really helped me put more fish in the boat. You might come over a few false albacore and bluefish mixed in with the bonita and Spanish from time to time...sometimes too many bluefish are mixed in! Redfish and May go hand in hand; this month is a favorite for casting artificial lures to them. Reds really start to settle down in their summer spots by early May. Casting Berkley Gulp Shrimp in threeinch size on light jig heads is one of my “go-to” baits for May redfish. My “go-to” colors are Sugar Spice Glow, New Penny, Rootbeer Gold/ Chart Tail and Natural. Another redfish bait I like is the three and a half-inch Berkley Powerbait Pro Shad in Pearl White and Perch Ice. Using topwater lures to catch redfish is so much fun, so try casting topwater plugs like MirrOlure’s Top Pup or the new Poppa Mullet. You can also cast popping or rattling corks in these shallow areas with a three-inch Berkley Gulp Shrimp, which will catch the redfish too. If you would rather go the bait route, try some fresh cut mullet or menabove: Capt. Jot and Don from West Virginia with haden on a light two cobia that weighed over fifty pounds each, Carolina rig. Try caught just off Wrightsville Beach.
fishing fresh cut bait around docks in the ICW or along creek mouths when the tide is moving. By mid-May the cobia, one of my favorites, start to show up around Wrightsville! I forecast that the cobia will be here a little early this season. I look for cobia around inlets, shoals and bait schools; nearshore/offshore reefs and ledges are also a good place to look, too. With the water being so clear it will be easier to see those brown logs in the water. We throw big jigs like Bluewater Candy Cobia Jigs, swim baits and live bait to the cobia. Color really does not seem to matter; but “go bright!” When I’m not sight casting for them, we are fishing around inlets, shoals and nearshore artificial reefs. I float fish, bottom fish and kite fish in these areas with live menhaden, blues, pinfish and mullet as bait. Sometimes a great bonus fish when fishing for cobia will be a nice bull redfish. You can chum if you like, but the sharks and rays will come and they will come in numbers! With the warmer weather the flounder will finally start showing up in better numbers. There are still a lot of smaller ones inshore, but the bigger ones will really start showing up in May. Most of the flounder fishing I’m doing is just off the beach, around wrecks and ledges, and around the inlets. I’ve caught flounder on both live and artificial baits in May. What I have seen is you will catch more numbers on live bait, but more keepers on artificial baits. Mud minnows on light Carolina rigs with #1 L42 Eagle Claw hooks will catch the greatest numbers of flounder. Berkley Gulp Jerkshad in five- and six-inch sizes will get the most keeper flounder. I rig these Jerkshads on 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-, and 3/4-ounce (ocean) jig heads with longer hook shanks in red or gray color. Tackle run down: PENN Battle II & Slammer III spinning reels in 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500 sizes. Rods: PENN Battalion 6’6” and 7’ medium-light and medium rods. Line: Spiderwire Ultra-Cast in 10- and 15-pound test. For the cobia, reels: PENN Fathom 20LW or 25LW casting or Slammer III spinning 5500 or 6500 spinning reels, with a PENN Rampage Jigging Rod in 50- to 100-pound class. Kayak Fishing
Next in the Line-up for 2018
So far for the 2018 model year, new kayaks for fishing have been rolling out all over the country. Native Watercraft decided they would unleash the hounds this year with five new models for the kayak angler, by adding two more to the Titan family and a crossover that should be out next month. In the meantime, between all the new innovative designs they have been working on, somehow a hull was born of simple but efficient designs. I had the opportunity last month at our annual spring demo day to have a seat in one of their newest creations (or I should a say a riff on one of their long-term winners that has been on the market for over ten years.) If you are familiar with their family of kayaks you have certainly heard of or have seen a Manta Ray Sit-on Top. Well, I guess that timetested design was just not good enough for the designers at the factory. So I am pleased to announce the new Manta Ray XT. Sleek and simple, the new Manta Ray XT has two molded in rear rod holders. There’s rack running down the side to add more rod holders or a fish finder, and a large front storage pod with more track added to the lid to add other accessories. With a 33-inch width, standing and sight-casting is just as easy as with their other fishing kayaks. As you know, seating is never skimped on when it comes to their kayaks, so you will find a full breathable frame seat with a high and low position (something not offered in the original Manta Ray.) As for weight, the Manta RayXT is where you would expect it to be for a 12foot class of sit- on top kayak. tipping the scales at 67-pounds with the seat in and 62-pounds with the seat removed. That’s so you can shave some weight for loading and unloading.
The time I got to paddle around at our demo day was impressive. The new XT preformed as I expected. The tracking was great and speed is where it should be for a 12-foot hull. The sharp bow entry sliced through the water like a sharp steak knife through a New York strip. Seat comfort was amazing with their hand-sewn breathable seat system. Stability was excellent while in the high position and from there standing was almost effortless. At the end of the day, the mad scientists in the R and D room in Fletcher, NC did it again. They made a great fishing kayak that hit all the right marks for a great day on the water. Now what really dropped my jaw is the price. This sweet little package comes in at $899...yes, that’s right, $899...they did all this with a quality frame seat and came in under a thousand dollars. That’s high quality and a great price for a kayak made in the Great North State. My plan this summer is to work this little jewel and put fish in my lap. Flying Around With Captain Lee
April has been another productive month, with many big Hatteras blues being around again this year, along with a lot of reds. We have had many half days of 15 to 30+ fish! There are not as many black drum being caught this year as there were last year, but there’s been some good solid fishing, even though Mother Nature could not make up her mind with the cold, wind and rain. May is one of my favorite times of the year, Stripers are spawning on the Roanoke River at Weldon. At any one time, there are a 100,000 to 500,000 in the upper five-mile stretch of the river. This is my 23rd year guiding for them up there. Keeper season is over and the river has calmed from all the boats the that were there during keeper season. The stripers have one thing on their mind, spawning, and the morning and evening topwater bite is on. You can almost count on having 100 fish days and I have seen two guys land over 400 fishin a day...did I say it can be very good? Red drum abound on the flats waterway edges and docks; topwater bites can happen all day long and bigger fish may be taken on topwater. I prefer the above: Katy Dean of Wilmington with a nice striper, caught smaller topwater plugs like the MirrOlure Pups and Jrs., smaller Rapalas and while fly-fishing with Capt. Lee Zara Spooks, all will work well for you. Gold spoons and grubs on worm hooks work well as search baits for the flats and waterways. Around the docks, live baits on lead heads work well for this. Black drum can also be found on the docks and flats; fresh shrimp is the bait of choice for them. For dock fishing you will need some stiff rods and heavy line as they can be large Flounder are moving into the inlets in good numbers and you can move up in bait size now. Inlets and waterway edges on the rising tides are target areas, as well as creek mouths on the falling tide. If you find one, there should be more in that area. This is also the time to fish the flats (one to two feet of water) in the grass edges with live baits or soft plastics. Purple with a chartreuse tail is the color of my choice for flounder. Speckled trout are on the topwaters now. I like the smaller baits (like I talked about above) which will work very well for trout, but you should also have some without a rattle in them. When you have multiple hits on a cast, you will know that you are on a school of fish. Soft plastics and small hard plastic baits like the MR17 MirrOlure will work well for this. Hit any marsh edges with moving water, oysters rocks and holes for your trout. Have a great time fishing in May. 13th Warriors on the Water Tourney Set for May 2-4
first time at Sports USA on Ft. Bragg, NC. This night is called Icebreaker Night because the anglers meet their military partners and get to sit together during the opening ceremonies. There are guest speakers including military leaders and Bass Pro Anglers. One of the Pros this year will be Hank Parker, host of Hank Parker’s Outdoors Magazine. He is also a past Bass Master Classic Champion. Other Pro Anglers who will be attending are David Williams and Shane Lineberger. Then on May 3, Mike Green and his staff will take sponsors, volunteers, and fishermen out to visit Ft. Bragg, Simmons Army Airfield, and Pope Army Air Field. The group will get to meet troops and do a lot of memorable activities with them. Finally, on May 4, tournament day is here! The gates open at New Hope Landing on Jordan Lake at 4:00 AM. Volunteers greet all the boaters to put on American flag and a yellow ribbon on each boat as a way to say “welcome home”. The troops are all excited and wait for their boaters to come through to pick them up. The event starts off after opening ceremonies and the weigh in will begin at 2:00 PM. The 13th annual Warriors On the Water (WOW) event will be held May 2-4, 2018. This event is a Military Association Bass Fishing Team Tournament that honors our military men and women. Surf City/Topsail
The weather this year has been a roller coaster and the spring has been no exception, but the fishing around Topsail has been really solid, despite the up and down weather patterns. We are very close to seeing large pushes of forage, as menhaden, mullet, and shrimp will begin their migration back into the marsh. Once more bait begins to enter the system the fishing will get even better. The inshore bite is heating up and the bluefish, flounder, and redfish are all on the feed. Look for the redfish to begin to spread out along the marsh and many of the mid- to upper-slot fish that have spent the last four months on the beach fronts are now inside, taking advantage of the more abundant food source. Look for the reds to begin to patrol shallow flats, oyster beds, grass shore- above: Justin Clover from PA with an amberjack lines, and creek caught while fishing nearshore with Capt. Chadwick mouths. This is of South End Anglers. the time of year that topwater baits are an effective tool to catch these fish. MirrOlure Poppa Mullet and Rapala Skittterwalks are among my favorites to cast to these fish. Bluefish will hang in the same areas and crush the same plugs fished for reds. Redfish can still be found schooled up around docks up and down the waterway. Z-Man MinnowZ, PaddlerZ and Swimmin’ Trout Tricks fished on Fathom Inshore jigheads will produce strikes from these fish. If the bite is slow, the addition of Pro-Cure bait scents can be the difference in catching fish or not. Cut bait and live minnows on Carolina rigs are very effective for catching redfish on those days when they aren’t responding to artificial baits. Save a bluefish or two to use as cut bait and work areas upcurrent from schooling fish to get them to strike; be sure and use circle hooks to avoid deep hooking fish. Flounder fishing can be very rewarding this time of year, both inshore and around nearshore structure. Live minnows on Carolina rigs and Z-Man plastics fished on jigheads are both very effective. Drift fishing around the area inlets can be very effective for locating flounder. Once a fish is caught, take note of the area where it was caught and fish it more thoroughly, as there will likely be multiple fish in the same area. The nearshore fishing around Topsail really gets going this month. Cobia will arrive later this month and look for them following schools of menhaden, on buoys and around area inlets. Always keep a rod rigged with a Blue Water Candy cobia jig or Z-Man HeroZ on a HeadlockZ jighead to sight cast to fish. Cobia can appear “out of nowhere” while fishing for other species. Live and cut menhaden fishing throughout the water column is a very effective tactic for catching cobia. Focus your efforts around structure and areas around the inlet while bait fishing cobia. Chumming can increase your odds of bringing fish to the boat as well; keep in mind that this will also increase the amount of shark and stingray activity. King mackerel fishing can be excellent this month. Rapala Mag Series X-Raps, Drone spoons behind planers and slow-trolled live and dead baits will get them to bite. Nearshore hard bottom, reefs, ledges, and buoys will hold good numbers of school-sized fish this time of year. Spanish mackerel fishing during the early season can be exceptional. Some of the largest fish of the season can be caught trolling spoons and deep diving plugs. #1 planers and size 0 Clarkspoons are the tried and true method for loading the fish box with Spanish.
Don’t overlook bottom fishing this time of year. Grunts, porgies, sea bass, triggerfish, grouper, and many other species will provide steady action. Metal jigs like BWC Roscos and larger Jigfish work great. Chicken rigs baited with squid and oversized Carolina rigs fished with frozen minnows are the best way to bring these fish to the boat. Be sure and support your local tackle shops and charter captains; they are your ticket to a great day on the water. This is it, this is the month we have all been waiting for – winter is gone and we have all tried to get our stuff ready and sneak offshore a day or two when the weather has allowed. This has seemed to be the winter that just would not quit, but somehow we all managed to make it. May is the month when it all seems to come together with better weather, warming water temps and large groups of fish moving closer to shore. Finish up the boat work, sharpen up those hooks and get everything ready because it’s time to go fishing offshore on the Crystal Coast! This is one of my favorite months for fishing. The weather has improved and the fish will begin to gather in large groups. We usually still see some yellowfin tuna and some wahoo in May but the highlight of the month is the availability of the larger gaffer-size mahi. These fish move in, and many days it can be hard to even get a bait out, as these fish will follow others to your boat and wait for anything to come their way. Lots of nice sized good eating fish, lots of action – that’s hard to beat! Not mention that there will be some sailfish around and the blue marlin bite should pick up steadily through the month, making for excellent opportunities to catch multiple species and experience some epic fishing. These mahi show up and they are very hungry and very aggressive on most days. They will readily take most any properly rigged/swimming bait and then put on a great show once they are hooked. Usually found in good numbers gathered up in large schools, once you get a bite you can almost rest assured there are plenty more right there waiting. As I always say, there is no super-secret bait and that goes even more so this time of year, but blue/white will always be hard to beat, and then the mahi often are drawn to anything bright – it can be orange, pink, chartreuse, or most any combination. This is a great time of year to experiment with some things and I would also suggest trying to practice using some circle hooks during the day. Once you have found some fish,please use a little judgement and realize that you (just like most folks) will never eat all the meat from 20+ large mahi before it succumbs to freezer burn, so catch and release a few or just head a little farther offshore and look for a marlin. The blue marlin begin to gather up a bit this time of year, and can be targeted with just changing out a couple of baits to something a little larger (like an Islander and horse ballyhoo). You still have other stuff out to attract the usual fish but also have something of a little more interest to a large marlin – you never know when it will be your turn at that once in a lifetime fish! I’ll cut this short since you folks are probably ready to catch fish instead of reading about it. Get your “stuff” ready, find the temp breaks occurring in good areas and get on out there for some awesome offshore action! Tomorrow is never guaranteed, so take a minute every day to call a family member and tell them you love them – no fish out there is more important than that! Plan ahead, be prepared and have fun!

May is the month for cobia down along the Crystal Coast! The season opens May 1, so be ready. We will only get a good six weeks of these fish in good numbers to catch. I’ve been tracking the fish up the coast and have heard Florida had a great run, so hopefully, with the cooler than normal water temps we had in April, it will lock the fish here for a good season. I looked back at reports from previous years and every year we’ve had a cold winter and spring we had a good cobia season, so let’s hope that’s the case this year. Last year was an off season for us, but if you can remember, we had a very mild winter and water temps were higher than normal all spring. When the cobia arrived, they didn’t stay around long and moved north quick to find cooler water. The best places to look will be along the beaches; the fish will be around bait, no other way around it. Looking for bait balls along the beaches is always a good way to locate fish for sight fishing; just because you may not see the fish doesn’t mean above: Greg Marguart, with his first they aren’t there. There could place fish from last year in the Cobia Challenge that weighed in at 96 be schools of fish under the bait pounds. Will this record fish be beat in that are just not coming up to this year’s Cobia Shootout? Guess we the top, so always fish under the will have to wait and see! bait baits to the bottom before you move on. You never know you might be passing up fish. I often get asked, Wwhat do I need to be throwing at them for sight fishing?” That’s pretty easy, we have an end cap full of Bowed-Up hand-tied local-made bucktails; these guys cobia fish for a living, so trust me, these bucktails are well-made and will catch fish. Also, we have a good selection of Sea Striker Bug Eye Jigs that worked well last season, too. Another good lure we have in the shop is the 3D Real Eel; it has worked well year after year, plus we’ll have live eels in-stock through the cobia Season. As far as bait fishing it’s pretty simple. Cape Lookout Inlet and the Beaufort Inlet will be the best areas to set up and fish. We’ll have fresh shad at the shop and plenty of chum, ready to go, all you’re doing is bottom fishing. Key to catching them this way is to check baits a lot and make sure they are fresh. It’s pretty much a waiting game, but a very effective way to catch cobia. Check out our “Cobia Shootout.” It starts May 1 at the shop and is a boat style event that will be fun for the whole family. When cobia fishing you never know when you might catch that fish of a lifetime, so if you’re entered in our “Cobia Shootout,” it might be worth quite a bit of cash. You can find more info on the event by calling the shop or looking on our website www. chasintailsoutdoors.com. Registration can be done in person at the shop or over the phone. We have started seeing the first signs of Spanish moving in. As a rule, Spanish fishing will be on fire mid-May through the end of May. This will be some of the best fishing we’ll see going on all year except in the fall. When these fish arrive, they are in big schools and are eating up everything. Also, some very nice-sized fish up to six pounds have been caught, but most have been running around 15 inches, which is a nice fish. The best areas to fish will be around the Oceanana Pier, out to AR315, also at Cape Lookout along the edge of the shoals. Anglers are catching them by trolling Clarkspoons and the local Bowed-
Up Spoons, which we had great luck with last year. Also, we’re seeing some great action casting to the Spanish; the key has been using very small lures. They’re feeding on very small glass minnows, so you need to match the hatch to catch them. We have a “Glass Minnow” lure in the shop that’s been killing them again this year, just the right weight and size to fool the fish into biting, and we’ve been seeing some action on the Sea Striker 1/2-ounce Jig Fish Lures. Along with the Spanish, plenty of bluefish are being caught in the area, mostly with the same lures used to catch the Spanish. Casting lures have been working well on the blues in the Cape Lookout area. Using finger mullet rigs on the bottom and topwater chuggers have been working the best. There’s nothing better than watching a 10-pound + fish crush a topwater lure in just a few feet of water. We should see these massive fish stay along the beaches for a few more weeks before they move on up the coast to find cooler waters. We’re beginning to see bonito at the AR reefs now, usually AR315 and AR285 are going to be the best areas to fish. Trolling Yo-Zuri DD’s in the smallest size usually is the “go-to” lure for catching these tasty fish around the reefs. Also, you can catch them casting jigs around the reefs at first light before the fish go down. Some flounder have begun to move in; we weighed a few this past weekend that were caught at the Port Wall and the deeper channels along the inshore waters on live mud minnows. The AR reefs haven’t fired up yet, but keep in mind, it’s just about time, plus not too many anglers have been out jigging the reefs over the last few weeks. If you’re jigging, fishing a twoounce Spro Bucktail tipped with a four-inch Berkley Gulp Shrimp will be the way to go. Nothing is going to outfish that combo at the reefs. We’ve been seeing good numbers of sea mullets over the last few weeks. With the cold spring, the fishing has been off just a bit compared to last spring. Most of the fish have been caught around the 25 Buoy back toward the Beaufort Inlet area. Now that we’re getting late into the mullet season run, they have moved to the Morehead side of the Turning Basin; some are even starting to move down the sound. Sam’s Gitters Spec Rigs tipped with bait shrimp are the hottest ticket in catching a cooler of the fish. We have plenty in the shop for you to choose from, with fresh shrimp as bait. The redfish bite is still good. Now that the water temps have warmed up, we’re starting to see fish move into the marsh areas. Anglers have been reporting success around the Core Creek area on topwater lures. There are still some schools of fish hanging around Shark Island at Cape Lookout; these fish have been there for the last month, so they are starting to get harder to catch but still will bite. Berkley Gulp baits and live minnows have been getting plenty of bites from the reds that are still in the ocean. Next month, speckled trout will be back open after the close was put into effect from this winter’s cold temps and freeze. We are already looking forward to the fall bite. So far this spring, we have seen good numbers of big fish around since the hard freeze, so we could see some good action. Most of the Trout caught this spring has been in the creeks, but now the fish are starting to move out toward the open water areas. Topwater lures and MirrOlure 17MR has been getting the job done; some have been having good luck with live minnows also. As for sheepshead, the Port Wall, AB bridge and the Beaufort bridge seem to be holding the most fish. The bridges are producing the majority with the larger fish, who’re making their way to their summer homes. Live fiddler crabs and sea urchins will be the best bait of choice...we do have both in stock. 877-Pound Bluefin Tuna Caught; Sets New North Carolina Record
The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries has certified a new state record bluefin tuna. Retired Army General Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the 877-pound fish March 17 after fighting with the fish for 2½ hours off Oregon Inlet. It measured 113 inches curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail) and had a girth of 79 inches. He caught the fish using trolling dead bait on 130-pound test line on a 130 Shimano rod and reel aboard the charter boat A-Salt Weapon fishing out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo. Chambers’ fish broke the former state record bluefin tuna by 72 pounds. That fish was caught off Oregon Inlet, as well, in 2011. The world all-tackle record bluefin tuna was 1,496 pounds and was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. Finally, Grouper Season Is Open!

The ultimate presentation of a live grass grunt, which is the ultimate gag bait in my opinion, due to its size and what I consistently find in the stomach of gags when cleaning them, is on a decoy jig. I hate to be a self promoter, but a struggling grass grunt or cig attached by fluorocarbon is the “cleanest” tackle possible. This is a more savvy presentation than a big bank sinker to a triple swivel, or sliding swivel to a leader to a bait. The Decoy Jig is the bait and weight in one, with no unnecessary hardware. To see a video regarding the construction of this heavy duty, simple bottom tackle, go to https://www.youtube. com/user/barefootfishing/videos?view=0&sort=dd&shelf_id=1, click on “HEAVY DUTY (simple) Bottom Tackle.” If I could give you one piece of advice to improve your grouper catching, not fishing, I would suggest your polish up on your anchoring…and use big, pretty grass grunts. This is how you make numbers of grouper show up in the cooler, and not just a bunch of grunts and pinkies. Fish for grouper, and you are more than likely to catch grouper…Fish cut bait and frozen minnows and squid, and you are assured to come home with a bunch or pinkies, grunts and sea bass, with a few grouper mixed in. When you anchor on the ledge, wreck or live bottom, you can get a “rally” going on the bottom as well as all the usual suspects on the light line. This is one of the main reasons why I look for an area with bait. The sabiki can be the “most valuable player” on the boat. Given fact: frozen cigar minnows have caught more grouper on the bottom, and kings on the light line than all the other baits combined! However...that was back then, this is now…nothing outfishes the light line now more than a live cig or sardine on clean tackle, and nothing is more irresistible on the bottom than a live cig or sardine. The only problem with live minnows on the bottom is that pinkies or grunts can destroy these baits instantly, and do. As always, I would suggest taking the kids and plenty of pics and video of the day…you’ll thank yourself later.
It’s been a long time since I ate a piece of FRESH grouper, and you can bet your last dollar that some brown fish are getting ready to be “dinner guests.” With the water temps normally in the mid- to upper-60’s during the beginning of May, I’d concentrate on the 85- to 100-foot water range for the gags, and 125-foot structures for the reds and scamps. Bait will be one of the key ingredients to look for in the search for the perfect ledge to fish. Look around a little to start with…with maybe a “test drop” or two on a good mark before you commit to anchoring. Seeing visible schools of cigs and sardines on the surface are a great sign that there is life in an area, and it is also a sure sign the light line could be productive for kings, cobia and/or dolphin. I would also be looking at the recorder for bait on the bottom. This is where the sabiki comes into play. There are some days when the live cig or sardine is the key to getting the bite from the bigger brown fish and big snapper. I’m not saying that it’s not a proven method to fish frozen cigs and sardines, but to get the bite going, sometimes it takes a something irresistible. This is exactly why you fish from an anchored position, rather than drift through a place time after time… for a number of reasons, but primarily to get a “rally” going. Gags can come on board in numbers from a single anchored position, due to their feeding habits. They respond to the sound and smell from a feeding frenzy happening, and will travel to it, and get in on the action. Speaking of the sound and smell of a feeding fenzy going on, this is why we always start with rapid firing whole frozen squid and minnows to the bottom to get the grunts, pinkies and sea bass going, in order to create the sound and smell….then it’s time to stop with the “freebies” and put down live grass grunts, cigs and sardines. To target flounder this time of year in the backwaters, bounce a Halo Shad along the bottom in a slow retrieve on the downcurrent side of drop-offs where an eddy is created around the transition area where it goes from grass to oyster beds. Trout and drum will also be frequenting these same areas, so be sure to try different baits based on the conditions of the day you are fishing and find what is working to entice the bite that day. Dead cigar minnows rigged on a swimming rig such as a Pirate Plug with a duster skirt will often lead to a reel screaming before anglers can even get all the lines in their spread put out. Be sure to run a hand line or a down-rigger with a bait down half-way in the water column; at the end of the day you will have many more fish in the box! In these same areas, anglers can drop to the bottom and find nicesized black sea bass and some really nice vermillion and gray snappers! Nearshore, the Spanish mackerel will begin to come into the picture along with some nice bluefish during the month of May. ClarkSpoons rigged behind planers is the way to go when it comes time to catching Spanish mackerel. Be sure to pick up a Coastal Angler Magazine next month, as I will go into detail on how we rig, tangle free, to catch Spanish mackerel on the Yeah Right! Fishing in southeastern NC is often best during the spring months, it’s the time of the year to take advantage of all the preparations and repairs that have been made during the winter months, time to employ all the new tackle and tactics that you have been anxiously awaiting to entice that trophy bite, time to get out on the water with friends and family and hear the words that we have all been waiting to hear, “FISH ON!”
This time of year is what we anglers in southeastern North Carolina wait all winter for; when the water temperatures are becoming most favorable, the baitfish are on the move with sportfish following, and spring is fully upon us and the end of “cabin fever” is being realized. Whether you enjoy working through the selection of artificial bait selections for speckled trout and red drum, or awaiting the favorable weather day when the winds want to cooperate and you find yourself returning to the dock with a box full of king mackerel and quality bottom fish...or better yet, enjoying a great day in the Gulf Stream with wahoo and tuna screaming the reels! Spring is upon us and it is time to go fishing! The end of April, all of May, and the first couple of weeks of June have always been my most favored time of year for fishing in our area. I remember when growing up and fishing with my dad, Capt. Butch Foster, I could hardly wait to begin brining ballyhoo and getting the tackle staged for the impending Gulf Stream trips where we would be targeting large wahoo, yellowfin and blackfin tuna, big mahi-mahi, and even the occasional nillfish hook-up! Our six-line spread often included ballyhoo rigged behind a series of Laceration Luresalongside a Cedar Plug marinated in Pro-Cure bait oils deployed off the outriggers and with a ‘Dorado’-colored Islander tipped with ballyhoo bobbing in the propwash. A Yo-Zuri bonita lure in purple/black or a medium-sized Braid Marauder in ‘Yellowfin Tuna’ color would often turn out to be the lure of the day. We could produce a mix of quality fish by running one of these lures down on a trolling weight off the 30-degree gunwale rod holder, under the naked swimming ballyhoo rig riding in the ‘second wake wave’ positioned off the back of the boat. Gulf Stream fishing can be some of the most tedious fishing with lots of effort going into boat, bait, and tackle preparation; the techniques utilized must be honed to create a seamless and enjoyable experiment, but once all these elements come together, it is some of the most exciting and rewarding fishing the deep blue has to offer! There is simply nothing quite like watching the perfect bubble trails from the baits in a finely tuned spread...oh, wait, there is... watching the water explode in that spread and hearing the simultaneous screams of line peeling off a Penn 50-wide and the words FISH ON! As I have mentioned in previous reports, the often-finicky nature of backwater species such as speckled trout, flounder, and red drum create an element of fishing that I enjoy the most, due to the fact that every single day is different, and you must find the combination that they will be enticed by that day. This trend is extremely true during early spring months such as May simply because the natural baits such as mullet minnow and live shrimp are not yet large enough to be cast-netted. As a result, anglers are required to resort to utilizing artificial options –Betts’ Halo Shad and Shrimp, Mirror-Lures (MR17 suspending twitch bait color #808 is one of my favorites), and sometimes a simple ‘Christmas tree’ curly tail on a 1/4-ounce orange jig head. Be sure to have a bottle of Pro-Cure Inshore Angler Super-Gel on board to tip your artificial baits. We have tested the effectiveness many times of these scent gels and they are proven time and time again to catch more fish at the end of the day. Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.

3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! aise your hand if you’ve ever spent the entire day on the water without a bite. Be honest. Now look around and see who else has their hand in the air. It’s probably everyone. So, what can you do on those days when the fish simply don’t want to bite? Before you throw in the towel, there are some tricks you can try that can fire up the bite, and here are a few that have helped me put a fish or two in the boat.
To me, there are three key components to re-igniting the bite: location, presentation and bait choice. You’d be surprised how many people will sit on a spot and flail the water because they “know” there should be fish there. Maybe there are fish there, but after 152 casts beside the same stump, that fish is probably not going to bite on cast 153, so move. It might mean simply casting to a different piece of structure, or it could mean a move to another likely spot. If you watch The Nuts & Bolts of Fishing TV series, you know I prefer to fish moving water. Fish actively feed when there’s some current. During slack tide or while you’re waiting for the power company to start pulling water at the dam, take a boat ride. Before you crank the engine, get a game plan. Look at your chartplotter and pick a fishy spot. Set a waypoint based on intelligent thought, and then hit the throttle. Presentation is another key component to triggering bites. What worked yesterday might not work today. Try slowing down your presentation even more. That will get your lure a little deeper or impart a slightly different action. Conversely, if you’ve been slow-rolling all morning, try speeding up the retrieve. Bait choice is possibly the most critical factor for hook-ups. Maybe these fish have been seeing a purple worm for the last month, and making a change to bubble gum color will trigger a bite. Size and shape can be a key as well. You might think big baits catch big fish, and that’s true. But elephants also eat peanuts. Downsizing to a smaller offering can often produce the biggest fish of the day. I like live and natural baits. If fish aren’t biting a lively pinfish or herring, I will switch to a piece of cut bait or make a pinfish tail rig, and that can make a stubborn fish come to the hook. When the bite turns off, you can sometimes fire it back up by using different tactics and techniques, and turn a slow day into a very fishy day. On recent trips to a nearby reservoir, he noticed the fatter blueback herring seen during the day and on dock lights. I
t’s all too easy to read fishing articles and have it be entertainment and inspiration instead of education. What can you do to begin to accelerate your learning curve? First, start taking notes. That’s right, this is your leisure time and you’re not in school any more but its time you take your game up a notch. Get a notebook; this could be the back half of the fishing log book you started, and start using it when you read articles in magazine, books or online subscriptions. Review your notes after you finish reading an article and make sure you understand those notes. If not, get in touch with the author if possible and ask. Next, using Google Earth (the program—not Google Maps satellite version) make a game plan based on what you learned from the article. Take screen shots and print them to remind you what your plan is and take these with you in the boat with your notes. Execute the plan, and stay on task. I find that it’s all too easy for a student to begin the plan that was laid out, only to quickly let it evaporate and punt, reverting to old habits once on the water. ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
