In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. T
he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. The

unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. W
alter had just returned from 30 days in Worcester, Mass., helping insured residents with their claims from the most recent bomb cyclone that hit the region. He and his fishing partner of 25-plus years, Kathy, a Dwyer High School geometry teacher, decided to go trolling for dolphin. They headed out the Lake Worth Inlet at 7 a.m. due east at 7 to 8 mph, trolling a pair of small, naked single-hooked ballyhoo and a tuna feather in their 2001, 25-foot Target with a Yamaha 250. It was a beautiful day on the water, with calm seas and a small ground swell. They were about 16 miles offshore when Walter saw a bill slap at the bait rigged on a 4/0 Penn Offshore Senator, loaded with 30-lb. Ande high-vis line. A school of bait had passed under the boat just moments before. Walter let the line free spool and then set the hook. The fish sounded and peeled off all but about 50 yards of line. Kathy quickly cleared the other lines and went chasing after the fish, while Walter recovered line. The fish came back up and jumped within 300 yards of the boat – a beautiful marlin! It jumped and thrashed about, then sounded again, stripping the reel of line. This time, phone in hand, Kathy chased down the marlin with Walter cranking on the Penn reel giving the Star Rod Deluxe a workout. They were able to pull up alongside the marlin, snapping a few photos in the water, before the marlin would swim away. The next round, the marlin did a triple jump right off the bow of the boat. As the fish arced the vessel, Kathy quickly snapped off several pictures… of herself. She had accidently switched the view of the camera. The struggle continued for four hours, with the marlin circling to the left—Nascar formation, peeling off line and Walter reeling it back in at least 30 times. As the fish would get close enough to see the white bottom of the Target boat, it would stripe up with markings a foot tall. Walter estimated the tail to be at least 4-feet and the marlin to be 10 to 12 feet in length. Kathy took the fight for a brief 15-20 minutes, giving Walter a break. She held her own with the marlin. They had drifted with the current about 26 miles offshore and north when the marlin made one last pass. Walter reeled the line until the swivel was about 3 feet from the tip of the rod when the knot broke. The marlin swam off with a bit of leader and a circle hook. Walter looked at the Ande line. It had stretched to the point that the color changed, but it never broke. That Feb. 17, 2018 will be a fishing trip the Mulfords, of Palm Beach Gardens, will not forget. CA Florida STAR, the state’s largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition, is back with changes that will make the 2018 event the best ever. This 101-day fishing event, presented by Yamaha, is conducted by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida, the state’s leading organization for marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy. With more than $500,000 in prizes, the event will run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. During this timeframe, registered anglers who catch qualifying fish will be eligible for prizes that include a brand new truck or boat, motor and trailer packages to all-terrain vehicles, marine electronics, scholarships and more. Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources. The format allows anglers to fish on their own schedule all summer long. A “catch, photo and release” competition, STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement to harvest or capture and transport fish. New details for the 2018 event include: • Kids - Continued free registration for current New Tide Members (CCA members) ages 6 – 17. • Guides - Guides are eligible to compete in their own division for Tagged Redfish and Tagged Dolphin. • Prizes in the Tagged Redfish Division include a Contender 22 Sport, a GMC Sierra, a Pathfinder 2200TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a Carolina Skiff 21 Ultra and Cottonmouth Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha. Prizes for the first two youth anglers in this division include two Carolina Skiff 16JVX CC boats, powered with Yamaha 40 HP motors and trailers. New divisions include: • Tagged Dolphin Division (mahi mahi) - a minimum of 20 tagged dolphin will be released in the state’s waters, with the first registered angler who catches one eligible to win $10,000 in cash or scholarship. • Non-tagged Redfish Division presented by Atlas Jack Plates - even non-tagged redfish are eligible for prizes. • Grouper Division - special prizes for black, gag, red and scamp grouper. • Tarpon Division presented by Humminbird - one winner of a $10,000 prize package will be determined by a random drawing of all catch photos entered in the drawing. Eligibility requirements include proper handling and resuscitation of the catch. Bring the Heat

chool is almost out, and the heat of summer is right around the corner. So what does this mean for catching fish during the summertime? Depending on your target species, you might have to slightly change your techniques to stay on top of the fish. Bass fishing during the summer can be hit and miss sometimes, but their higher metabolism coupled with the shad spawn will likely help you out with catching some nice fish. With so many waterways that hold bass, it doesn’t take much effort to make a quick trip to a nearby pond. South Florida’s Sammy Suarez, 14, started fishing a couple of years ago and has been honing her skills at catching both largemouth and peacock bass out of local canals and golf course ponds.
During the summer months, she and her dad catch really nice fish in the early mornings and late afternoons using a topwater lure like the Rebel Pop R and popping it at a medium speed. The fish in these canals and ponds regularly approach 5 pounds and sometimes exceed that. Another thing that happens during the summer is the increased growth of vegetation, which in turn brings out frogs in big numbers. To match the hatch, I like to throw a Booyah Pad Crasher at any weeds or vegetation I see and start a slow retrieve. When the bass blows up on it, make sure not to set the hook right away. Wait a second to make sure he has it, and bury the hook. There are also plenty of saltwater opportunities in the summer, speckled sea trout being one of my favorites. Finding the right place to fish for them and understanding their preferred hunting grounds is essential in securing a delicious meal. Trout are ambush feeders, which means they like to be still and attack prey as it swims by. Grass, rocks, oyster bars and docks all make for great structure where trout stage, waiting for a meal. The presence of current is important, since it is what pushes baitfish through the structure where trout are lying ready to ambush. If these two elements—current and structure—line up, you are in a good place to fish for trout. Live shrimp under a popping cork, jig heads tipped with a soft plastic and topwater lures are all good choices. Trout tend to bite better on overcast days, especially if you’re using topwater lures. Remember to try and match the hatch with whatever baitfish you are seeing in the area. These fisheries will surely make it worthwhile to get out and soak up some rays this summer, as well as to enjoy a fun family outing during the most relaxing season of the year in the great outdoors. W
hether wading or fishing from a kayak or flats boat, early summer is one of the best times to fish. When the water temperature gets in the high 70s and low 80s, the topwater bite is on. Be sure to keep at least one topwater tied on. At the last Stuart Rod and Reel Club meeting, DOA Lures founder Mark Nichols showed us the new PT-7 topwater lure, which has a single hook rigged through a plastic body shaped like a small Zara Spook. What’s great about this new bait is you can skip it under mangroves and piers. I also use the smaller size Zara Spook in gold and the Skitter-Walk in both sizes. My standard summer search lures are DOA 1/16- or 1/8-oz. jigheads with 4-inch paddletails in silver sparkle or pearl white. I also throw 4-inch Yozuri shallow diving plugs with treble hooks in light colors—such as light green. Always use a 3-foot mono or fluorocarbon leader tied on to
the end of your braided line. I use 20- or 25-lb. leaders and 6- to 10-pound braid. White braid works the best for me, as the dark colors are too hard to see. Tie lures on with a loop knot so they move more freely. I mainly fish with lures for snook, trout, redfish and tarpon. Other fish frequently caught are jacks, ladyfish, flounder, pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel. Finding Fish As usual, finding the fish is key. Since most of the grass in the lagoon is gone, looking for grass is not an option. But there are still some grass patches growing close to the bottom in Vero and Bear Point/Bear Cove areas. The usual keys to finding fish in the lagoon apply: 1) Look for birds. 2) Look for bait. Right now there’s bait in the backs of coves around mangroves in shallow water. Bait near deeper water means the predator fish can access it. Areas holding ladyfish and jacks usually hold trout, redfish and snook, as well. The jacks and ladyfish are there because there’s bait around. 3) Fish docks. 4) Fish bridges. 5) Fish shoreline structure and mangroves, especially on high tide. 6) Fish humps or shallow spots away from shore as well as contour changes. Top predators often feed in shallow water where they can trap bait against seawalls or shallow points. Know The Tide 1) Fish the tide. The fish are usually facing the current waiting for bait to swim to them. 2) Fish closer to shore on high tide. 3) Fish away from the shore in low tide. n 1983, John Conlon and Steve McElveen saw a need to start a fishing club in central Florida. Both felt a need as they fished the coastal areas and found many other anglers from the central Florida area. Unlike many of the other local ports, central Florida did not have a fishing club. So, through their insight and the efforts of Charlie Eby, Ray Stanton, Jim Neff and Bill Matthews, Central Florida Offshore Anglers (CFOA) was created. Every year CFOA both hosts and directs an offshore tournament out of Port Canaveral. May 19th, 2018 marks the 33rd annual tournament, and with a huge turnout in 2017 there is much excitement about the upcoming event. Proceeds from the tournament enable CFOA to continue contributions to marine conservation and youth-related charities and provide angling education and opportunities for youth and families throughout the central Florida coast and the greater Orlando area. Funds from past events contributed to the recent deployment of a man-made nearshore reef to enhance sea life and add needed hard structure for future growth of the ecosystem. CFOA funding has also helped with many other reef projects as well current clean water projects on the Indian River Lagoon. The annual CFOA Offshore Tournament is a fun-filled family event to attend. Atlantic Grouper Season Re-Opens May 1
Anglers targeting grouper in Florida state and federal waters of the Atlantic, including state waters off Monroe County, will be able to take home some of their catch starting May 1, when the season for several species reopens to recreational and commercial harvest. The following species will reopen to harvest May 1: gag, black, red, yellowmouth and yellowfin grouper; scamp; red hind; rock hind; coney; and graysby. The harvest of these species of grouper will remain open until Jan. 1, 2019. These species are closed annually from Jan. 1 through April 30 each year as a measure to ensure the long-term sustainability of Atlantic grouper species. State waters in the Atlantic are from

shore to 3 nautical miles out. Recreational anglers targeting these species may not take more than three groupers per person, per day. ay will be the month of the offshore meat hunter who likes to create a lively saltwater menu. Grouper will be the one of the main components in this fish flavored menu, as the seasonal closure of many representatives of the grouper family comes to an end. May 1 opens the strategy window for targeting, catching, and keeping several species of grouper. dwelling brawlers will be sought after by rod and reel fishermen in depths from 50 to 180 feet of water. The focal point inevitably becomes 120 feet to 160 feet when targeting grouper, although trophy fish can be caught in 65 to 85 feet of water regularly. The common thread running through all successful grouper fishing is fishing around structure, reefs that set the foundation for the ocean food chain. These reefs harbor baitfish and provide shelter in the form of “holes” or voids in the reef, where grouper
like to occupy. Find structure—you will find fish. Like many species of fish, grouper are comfortable being opportunistic feeders and will eat a wide array of dead and live baits. Huge diameter mouths, packing an intense suction mechanism allow groupers to eat just about anything smaller than them. Preferred live baits will include greenies (threadfin herring), sardines, cigar minnows, grunts, and pinfish. Dead or cut baits of almost any flavor will work, just
keep in mind to match the size of your cut bait to a general size of fish you are targeting. Matching tackle is also important, and the tackle needs to be heavy—4/0 to 6/0 class reels spooled with braid from 80- to 200-pound strength is recommended or a reel with mono from 80- to 100-pound will result in the best chance for success. Similarly, strong monofilament leaders from 100- to 150-pound test will be necessary to resist chaffing during the hook up and subsequent battle as the fish initially will swim the tackle through the reef in an effort to escape. Solid, single hooks of 7/0 to 10/0 are crucial, and of course a sufficient amount of lead sinker to find and hold the bottom as grouper typically live very near or on the bottom of the ocean floor around the structure. While the opening of grouper season will be a highlight for this month, May is also characteristically an excellent month for catching all species of snapper, including large muttons. Big (15 to 25-pound) mutton snapper will begin to move up the reef line from points south and east and find reef haunts relatively close to our inlet in depths of 60 to 80 feet. May will be the bottom fisherman’s meat hunting dream, come true.

pring is here! And it brings with it lots of baitfish triggering feeding frenzies along the beaches and rivers. Keep your eyes looking for birds diving in areas such as the Crossroads, Indian River north up to the Stuart Causeway, and beaches close the inlet. The baitfish are also
showing up at the Sand Pile and Bull Shark Barge, both spots about three miles from the inlet. There, you want to use sabiki rigs to catch greenies, threadfins, and Spanish sardines. Ok, now that we have bait, let’s go catch some fish! The cobia are showing up more every day at the Sandpile and wrecks two-to-six miles out such as the three sunken barges and many more. At these spots, we use “fish finder” rigs with three-to-six-ounce egg weights with baitfish. The other method is chumming sharks to your boat, and pitching weighted baits out to “swing under the sharks”. Some other good baits are jigs tipped with squid or big shrimp. But best of all are live crabs! If battling the crowd at the Sandpile, get there super early chum up the sharks. The best chum
wins when competing with other boats. Cut bonito chunks are a great ticket! When you hook your cobia, get it in the boat ASAP or the sharks will rob you. Schools of big jacks can be found chasing bait outside the inlet. Just look for surface activity on a calm morning and cast one-to-twoounce spoon or poppers are fun! The 15-pound jack will give you a great morning workout when you hook them. We should see snook showing up close to the inlet as the water continues to warm up and they prepare to spawn. May is the last month of snook season and usually the best time to target keepers. Drifting by the “Hole in the Wall” with a live pilchard on a knocker rig or fish finder rig is a classic method.

ay is here and that means big dolphin and open season on grouper! Great news, since we’re coming off one of the slowest April’s I’ve seen since moving here back in the 80s. I’m not exactly sure why this spring was so difficult out here, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that May helps us bounce back. Traditionally May has always been our “big” dolphin month with trolling being the best way to target quality fish on a consistent basis. Dolphin are gluttons and although elephants may eat peanuts, mahi eat everything. As one of the fastest growing fish out there, it’s no secret that dolphin are eating machines. Trolling a normal spread of ballyhoo along with a couple bigger baits (horse ballyhoo with a chugger over top or even a marlin lure to make a lot of noise) and at a faster speed than normal (sometimes as fast as 8.5 knots) is the best way to target big mahi out of Stuart. While this is one of my favorite times to troll and usually offers up a pretty good bounty, it’s also a great time to bottom fish, and drift live baits. Grouper season is open and this year we’ve seen more red and black grouper than I can ever remember.

inally, the windy months of March and April are almost behind us and we can look forward to the great fishing weather that May has to offer us on the Treasure Coast. Other than the usual windy days, it has been a pretty mild winter and spring has arrived. Look for warmer temperatures and little less blustery days. As the water temperatures climb, the fishing will steadily improve on the river. The water is already in the mid-70s and that means the fish will be hungry. It will provide fantastic mornings for top water and lazy afternoons to drift the flats. May is one of my favorite months on the water! Redfish will be our main target throughout May. The past several years have bought us schools of slot sized redfish along the Indian River. Most of the fish we have caught have been in the 18-to-30-inch range. The mangroves have produced lots of redfish action again this year. They have been sunning on the flats and May gets their blood pumping and turns on the feeding. I always have three lures ready during May, D.O.A. shrimp, C.A.L. jerk baits and top water lures. Gold spoons and the D.O.A. 2.75-inch shrimp will also be great additions to the arsenal when fishing for redfish. As the fish school up, look for them around the edges of the flats. Most

of the river here on the Treasure Coast has been holding redfish and you should be able to find some on your favorite flats. I tend to enjoy the east side of the river, but we have found many on the west side as well. Snook fishing in the early mornings will bring some rod bending action as they head up on the flats for an early morning or late evening meal. Top water lures (like the D.O.A. PT-7), Bait Busters and D.O.A. shrimp are all great lures to tempt a snook into biting. We have been broken off numerous times by big snook under the mangroves. Docks will also hold snook lurking around for an easy meal. Live shrimp is hard to beat around the docks. In the inlet areas, try around the seawalls and bridges with live bait, TerrorEyz, feather jigs or deep diving plugs. I love early morning for great snook fishing opportunities! Snook season will close May 31st. Trout will continue to feed on top water at first light and live shrimp on popping corks during the day. As the sun rises, they will

head off the shallows to deeper water in the two-to-four-foot range. We have had some nice gator trout of late and should see some still big trout throughout the month of May. I have had great success with C.A.L. jerk baits and Deadly Combos this
year in place of live shrimp. If you are using live baits, try big shrimp or pilchards on the flats. Both sides of the river have been productive in early mornings. Winter fishing for trout has been good this year and spring should continue to give you some great action. Bridges will hold the usual sheepshead catch, while snapper will be moving into the river along with flounder. Jacks and ladyfish will be patrolling the areas and creating havoc all over the river. Beaches will produce whiting with still a few catches of Spanish mackerel and bluefish along with the usual whiting. Tarpon will begin their trek into the river and you can start looking for them in the St. Lucie River, Big and Little Mud areas and the channels of the river. May is a great month to fish the Treasure Coast; plan on a trip out on the river soon! As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby...it's an ADVENTURE!! Good fishing and be safe.

ooray for May and the fish we will slay! May is filled with fishing opportunities; the grouper season has reopened, the snapper fishing is on fire, and the winter storms are gone! We have patiently been waiting for the first day of May and the opening of grouper season. With all the great species of grouper swimming in our waters, our top picks are gag and red. Anglers should be ready to take full advantage of the fair boating weather and the early season bite. With the calm weather, we plan to launch further out and toward our favorite grouper grounds to target these grumpy tugging machines. Snapper fishing will continue to be stellar throughout May. Gray and mutton snappers will be the heavy hitters on the reefs, weighing well into double-digits and adding color and taste to the fish boxes. Overall bottom fishing will yield great bounties and good chances of capturing a true trophy fish. So, if you are looking to hook a fish of a lifetime, don't miss out what the incoming weeks have to offer.

ook for the inshore fishing to improve this month as the water temps warm up. The snook action around the Fort Pierce Inlet and at the area's bridges should be red hot for anglers using live baits fished on a 5/0 live bait hook and enough lead to hold the bottom. You will want to try a hand-picked shrimp, pinfish or a pilchard. The redfish bite should also be good at places like Jack Island, Round Island and around Harbor

he month of May has a lot of fish catching opportunities. The spring mahi run is in full swing, kingfish will be starting to show in good numbers, the snapper bite will still be on and the big thing will be that grouper season is now open. Grouper are a highly sought-after game fish that can be found around any structure in our Treasure Coast waters. Offshore they can be found in depths around 10 feet on the reefs that run the beach out to the deepwater canyons in 1,000 feet of water. For a day of fun grouper fishing, there are many natural and artificial reefs out to 150 feet of water that hold these fish. You can find structures on charts from your local tackle shops and also by watching your bottom machine while running to find new areas of structure. Grouper are a magnificent fighting fish and they know where their home is and they don’t like to leave. When they do leave, grouper usually don’t go far from their home; they will usually travel 10 to 20 feet to find food. When they feel the hook, they will head directly back to their home and if they can get into their home they will usually rock you. If this happens, gently release your reel

to allow the line to slack and wait a bit. Sometimes you can trick the grouper into coming back out by doing this, giving you another chance to reel it up. Grouper will eat a variety of different baits, both live and artificial will work well. For live bait fishing, a big greenie will work well, but a bigger blue runner that is lively, will work even better. Drop the blue runner (or greenie) down to the bottom near the edge of the structure with enough weight to hold bottom. Artificial lures work just as well. A butterfly jig bounced off the bottom is a good way to entice a grouper to eat. Bouncing the butterfly jig off of the bottom makes noise and pushes puffs of sand causing a reaction strike from the grouper when it comes to check things out. When fishing for grouper, you
will want to have some heavier gear for the fight. A good set-up is a 6-to7-foot rod matched with 6/0 reel or 8,000 size spinning reel with a lot of

drag tightened down, with 50-to-80pound braid for the sensitivity and it doesn’t stretch like mono. This will keep the grouper from getting back to its hole after eating and getting hooked up. The short rod will give you more leverage and if you use short pumps it will tire the fish out quicker. If you do get “rocked” up, leave the rod alone for a few minutes, sometimes the grouper will come out of its hole and then you can try to reel it up. There are many species of grouper, so it is a good idea to know the species and to know the characteristics of each. There are many apps available that can be downloaded to a cell phone and used to compare to your catch to help you confirm your grouper’s identity. While fishing for grouper, don’t forget to keep a pitch rod ready, you might get a visit from a cobia or a mahi. Get out on the water and enjoy the springtime bite and be safe.

he dry, temperate winter we experienced in East Central Florida has me hopeful for the fishing in May and possibly for the beginning of the recovery of the seagrass beds in the Indian River Lagoon long term. The dry weather will concentrate snook and tarpon in areas with fresh water inputs, such as the Sebastian River, small creeks, canals and culverts. The low, clear waters of the lagoon caused by a lack of rain, if it persists through the summer, will allow good light penetration to the lagoon bottom which may spark some regrowth of the grass beds. This has happened in the past, so please, nobody do a rain dance and don’t complain about your lawn being brown, it is for the best.
Sebastian River – Late spring
is “the season” for the Sebastian River and many of the other freshwater feeders that flow into the Indian River Lagoon. Tarpon and snook of all sizes are at their highest concentrations of the season and they are eager to feed on the variety of baitfish that take up residence in the Sebastian River. ay is the best month for offshore fishing out of Sebastian when the wind doesn’t blow. Dolphin fishing is a solid bet. Go east and fish where you see baitfish or sargassum weed. The key is to keep your bait spread looking sharp and fish good water. Don’t just head east and put your lines out. Fish around weeds, or birds, fish over reefs. Pick up and run for a while until you see something. Change your baits out if they don’t get hit. Work the good areas north and south and fish the fishy spots thoroughly. Keep a wahoo bait in the spread too. A wire rigged ballyhoo with a heavy cone head skirt running just beneath the surface will eventually pay off. Grouper season opens in Atlantic waters May 1, so big gags, blacks, scamps and reds will all be keepers on the reefs of Sebastian.
Try live baits a few feet off the reef. Heavy tackle will be key for landing these bruisers. Anchor up near the reef and the big boys will find you. When feeding, they roam around looking for chow so be patient. Amberjack will fill in when the grouper have the day off. AJ’s will show easily on the fish finder over top of the reefs. Jigging with a squid tipped bucktail or a butterfly jig is a fun way to get hooked up to the hard fighting brutes. A live bait dropped down will always seal the deal. nook fishing can be red HOT in May! The fish will be eating good from inlet to inlet on the Treasure Coast. Throw artificial lures, such as the Bass Assassin LIT'L Boss 3.5inch, the 3-inch ¼-ounce D.O.A. Shrimp, and the LIVETARGET 3-or-5-inch finger mullet swimbait. The fish will be very hungry getting ready for their summer spawn, and don't forget if you're in search of a keeper fish, season closes June 1 and until then you are allowed one slot size snook that has to be between 28-and-32-inches with a pinched tail. Look for these fish in very shallow water around structure like docks and seawalls. The flats will also be holding fish in very shallow water. Look for bait fish, such as greenies or mullet, and a snook will
the roof with blistering dragged screaming runs and very violent strikes on your bait. The Indian River Lagoon is such a diverse fishery, especially from land. You can go largemouth bass fishing, river fishing and beach fishing all in one day. This is also when afternoon thunderstorms normally start to begin. Sheepshead on a Fly
I
love the heat that summer brings here on the Treasure Coast. A ton of options from the river to the Intracoastal Waterway, flats, inlet, beaches and offshore. Everybody loves to chase tarpon and big snook, but I am finding a new passion in the technical fishing required for sheepshead on fly. Walking the flats and fishing for these super picky critters on sight, with small flies is as pure as it comes. It is not an easy task and one that requires stealth and patience. A 6-weight or 8-weight fly rod with a floating line and a 10-foot leader with a 15-pound fluorocarbon tippet is the proper set up. Start at low tide with the sun on your back, slowly walk the flats and look for small schools, typically 3 to 12 fish. Take your time while wading the flats. Most fishermen are too fast and
spook the fish. Look for little structure, ledges and holes or the edge of channels. Make sure to put the fly far enough in front of them and wait until they get closer, then strip. Usually I prefer short consistent strips but always adjust my game plan as I see different scenarios while fishing. I prefer a variation of Clousers and shrimp flies in size 4-to8 with different weights for different depth and changing current. I usually go brown, sand, chartreuse, green, olive, white, blue and orange for color. Keep a few bigger flies in your box in case you run into some redfish, snook or bonefish as well. ay marks the return of great diving conditions to the Treasure Coast as water temperatures rise above 80-degrees for the first time in months and sea conditions become increasingly more advantageous. Hunters know grouper AND hogfish seasons open this month and many will be out opening day for the first crack at a big one. Since summer is right around the corner, this time of year also marks many locals first dive of the season and a thorough shakedown of gear and equipment is always a great idea before heading out. As summer draws near, winds also become more favorable for trips offshore. Many divers say, “Call me when its 80-degrees,” and

this month should be when local waters cross that mark! Calm seas should also allow access to many of the shallow reefs along local beaches too. These dive sites, such as Bryn Mawr Beach, the Georges Valentine wreck off the House of Refuge and Bathtub Beach, should start to experience clear water once again and make for great snorkeling, freediving and scuba diving. Grouper season has been closed
on the east coast since the first of the year, and many spearfishermen consider it a tradition to get out on opening day with the hopes of landing a big one. And, many divers organize special trips to take advantage of the start of the season with trips to some sites usually picked over later in the year, like the David-T or the Cement Barge out of Stuart. These areas can hold some big fish come opening day. It’s also worth noting hogfish season
reopens May 1 in Atlantic waters, and reminding divers of recent hogfish rule changes, which include an increased size limit to 16-inches and a reduced bag limit of one per harvester. An eye should be kept out for passing cobia, as they have been reported in good numbers this year. Be prepared with a flashlight to follow grouper who duck into dark ledges to evade capture. Since sea conditions have been so poor this winter, many divers may be surprised to realize how much time has passed since their last dive. Speargun bands in storage may have dry rot and should be inspected and replaced before a trip comes up. This is a great time to review tank inspection stickers and check hydro dates to ensure both are current; this will help avoid any surprises when having tanks refilled the night before a trip. Gear in storage should be tested for function to ensure a safe dive and any safety concern should be dealt with before heading offshore. Regulator service at the dive shop may take up to a week this time of year, so plan accordingly. A quick pool session is also a great way to brush up on skills and shake down any issues before heading out on the next dive.

homas Parramore took the first-place slot in the Treasure Coast Casters April Junior Division tournament with a 1.12-pound ladyfish and two eels, and Brexton Hager took second-place with a puffer. Judging by the weather the night before the scheduled April Treasure Coast Casters Junior Division Tournament, organizers Cammie and Capt. Joe Ward were not sure if there would be a tournament on
Sunday, April 8. “We did get it in before all the rain started pouring down, but it was a tough morning of catching. Everyone was fishing but only four fish were caught,” reported Cammie Ward. No fished were weighed in the third-place slot. Biggest fish of the tournament went to Thomas for his lady fish, earning him a trophy and a Fishing Center gift card. The next Junior Division tournament will take place in June.

reat weather for the March tournament resulted in lots of fish caught during the Treasure Coast Casters Senior Division tournament in March. Boats left Castaway Cove Marina at 7:15 a.m., and at the end of the day, anglers brought the following fish to the scale: Josh Richter weighed in the only redfish—2.04-pounds; Kendrick Forlifer a 2-pound croaker, as well as a sheepshead; Andrew Evans, two sheepshead, the largest 1.08-pounds, as well as the only snapper of the tournament; Ciara Franqui, two sheepshead, the largest 2.02-pounds; Owen Nail, two sheepshead, with one weighing 2.06-pounds and officially the biggest fish of the tournament; Jeff Richter, two sheepshead, the largest 1.06-pounds; Micheal Rochedieu, two sheepshead, the largest 2.0-pounds; and Nicolas Rosario, two sheepshead, the largest 1.08-pounds. Nicholas also caught the only two black drums of the day. Owen Nail's 2.06-pound sheepshead, the biggest fish of the day, earned him a trophy, prize bag and a $50 Bass Pro gift card.

he third annual Sebastian Lionfish Fest will take place May 19-20, 2018, at Captain Hiram’s Resort and Marina in Sebastian. Each year, this event is met with great success, last year hosting almost 600 attendees, who devoured over 1,200 lionfish, and removed another 300 lionfish from Treasure Coast reefs. The Sebastian Lionfish Fest is a multifaceted festival, which includes a two-day lionfish tourney, a cook-off between eight local restaurants, and an educational fair of organizations and vendors. What You Need to Know
n the April magazine, we discussed the wind window. It is important for a kiter to grasp the theory of the wind window and have the ability to comfortably navigate the kite around the edge of the window before learning to body drag. Body dragging is the act of powering the kite to propel the body through the water without a kiteboard. Body dragging, is a critical step in the learning process, as it can be used for both board retrieval and for navigating back to dry land if needed. The first form of body dragging we will discuss is known as upwind body dragging. This is mainly used for board recovery. Typically, after a fall/wipeout, a kiter will be dragged out of reach and downwind of their board. Trying to swim upwind toward the board can be time consuming, exhausting, and in big swell, dangerous. The kiter must maneuver the kite to sail back
upwind to their board. This is done by keeping the kite at the 1:30 or 10:30 clock position. The kiter will then lay on their side and form a semi rigid, yet hydrodynamic body position. The kiter will then point themselves 15 to 20 degrees upwind of the kite. Basically, the kiter becomes a sailboat keel and uses their hands and legs like a rudder to steer themselves at the appropriate angle. They will then tack back and forth until they have gone upwind enough to intersect their board. The next thing a kiter will learn is how to body drag down wind. This is a very useful tool for getting back to the beach quickly if you lose your board and are unable to retrieve it. However, the main purpose of this exercise is to teach the kiter how to perform a proper power stroke. As discussed in our last article, the power stroke is what actually provides the initial lift/pull

that gets the kiter up and riding. To practice this, the kiter will first lay on their belly facing downwind with the kite at 12:00. If the kiter wants to simulate riding to the right, they will dive the kite from 12:00 to 1:00 and then back again while allowing the kite to drag them through the water. The kite's flight pattern should resemble a "figure eight." As the kiter becomes more comfortable they will gradually dive the kite deeper into the window. Therefore, if the kiter wanted to simulate riding to the left, the power strokes would then be performed on the left side of the window.

Wesley’s Island
I
n March, the third annual Wesley’s Island Pig Roast was held to benefit MMPS Environmental and its continued progress on Wesley’s Island, located on the west end of the Fort Pierce Inlet. The event was conceived by MMPS to remember John Wesley Davis, former resident of the island, who used to walk his pet pig, Ollie, on a leash around Downtown Fort Pierce. Honored at the pig roast were several organizations and people who distinguished themselves through environmental volunteerism in the Artificial Reef Program over the last ten years. These included: American Dream Factory, LeRoy Creswell, Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club, Lewis Garrett, Jack and Jill of the Treasure Coast, Debbie Langley, Marine Cleanup Initiative, Mark McGee, Sea-life Habitat Improvement Project, SWORD Outreach

will contribute $2,000 towards the purchase of additional trees for planting on the island. During the next rainy season, ERD plans to plant larger trees on the island pending potential grant funding from the Indian River Lagoon Council. In a public/private cooperative effort, it is hoped that ERD will be able to plant the additional trees, leaving even more money for trees on the island. The island has been the focal point of volunteers since 2014. In 2016 St. Lucie County’s Environmental Resources Department (ERD) helped volunteers by removing exotic vegetation and replanting coastal grasslands on the island. Planting of larger trees is hoped to commence in the upcoming rainy season. In the future, maintenance of the island will be the responsibility of MMPS Environmental and a group of dedicated volunteers.

Trailer Inspection Tips
for the Spring and Summer Boating Season T
he weather has finally given in, spring is here, with summer right around the corner, and we will be spending more time “on the road” to get to the water. Before doing so, make sure to check out your boat trailer and make sure you are up-to-date with the requirements and safety issues. • Brakes. If you have a doubleaxle, or tandem as it’s called, the law says you must have working brakes on all wheels. If you’re bound for the Keys or plan to drive a distance, make absolutely sure all brakes are working properly. • Lights. Be sure your lights are working. Brake lights are especially important, along with directional lights. You don’t want to stop at a light and have someone run into the back of your boat. • Tires. Check for uneven wear and for heat cracks. Insuring proper tire pressure is an easy way to help
keep heat cracking from happening. Most standard tires in the 14-inch and 15-inch sizes should be kept at 52 psi . • Bearings. If you notice uneven tread wear on the inside or the outside, you may want to have your bearings checked. • Bunk carpet. Check to see if it is in good condition and stapled securely. If it is worn or torn, replace it. • Winch Strap. Be sure your winch strap is in good condition. You don’t want it breaking while your loading the boat back on the trailer. Take a little time and look your trailer over carefully from front to back and side to side. If you see anything questionable, have an experienced technician check it for you. .S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 59 recently announced its support of ‘Wear Your Life Jacket to Work’ Day on May 18, 2018. Flotilla 59 joins boating professionals and boating enthusiasts to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life jackets, and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work. The annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) serves as a fun, educational element just prior to National Safe Boating Week, May 19-25, the official launch of the 2018 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating the boating public about the safety and comfort of life jackets has been a main focus on the North American Safe Boating Campaign. ‘Wear Your Life Jacket to Work’ Day will take place on May 18, wherever you are, but in Stuart it will be culminate with a picture at 12 noon at the Stuart River Walk. On Saturday, May 19, Coast Guard
Station Fort Pierce will hold an open house to kick off the week’s events. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in 80% of recreational boating fatalities in 2017, and that 83% of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 59 in Sandsprit Park has been serving the boating community on the Treasure Coast for over 75 years. The Flotilla can be reached at 3443 S.E. he warm summer months are upon us, which means lots of boating, diving and, of course, the annual Abaco Lionfish Derby! Friends of the Environment is calling all fishermen to participate in our annual effort to decrease numbers of this invasive species in our waters. Striving to eliminating an entire fish population may seem strange for an environmental organization, but in The Bahamas’ case, it is crucial for our natural marine ecosystem. The red lionfish, Pterois volitans, is an alien invasive species in our waters. They are not native and have harmful impacts to the ecosystems that they are introduced to. This is of particular concern to island nations like The Bahamas due to our heavy reliance on native species such as the Nassau grouper and snapper in the fishing and tourism industry. Lionfish not only eat a lot of our native species, but also compete with them for habitat and other resources such as shelter and food. They reproduce abundantly and often, and grow swiftly. The red lionfish, although appealing to the eye, has venomous spines. Research has shown that these spines make it difficult for our native fish to prey on lionfish without hurting themselves, leaving it up to us to help remove this species from our reef ecosystems. Once caught, lionfish can be properly filleted and enjoyed, resembling a fish such as snapper, with a flaky, white texture. This will be the 10th Annual Abaco Lionfish Derby. Since it began, derbies have been hosted in Marsh Harbour and Green Turtle Cay and have resulted in over 9,250 lionfish being removed from Abaco waters. aiting at home for a phone call, running to the mailbox for news from a friend, scanning the Yellow Pages for a plumber—these artifacts from the pre-Internet days are laughable activities in today’s era of technology.When was the last time you replaced the tape in your answering machine or the ribbon in your typewriter? So in this modern age, why would anyone look to a tour book with old information for advice on planning a fishing trip? For unknown reasons, all the tour books for Costa Rica list the high season for fishing as November to April. At FishingNosara we get calls from clients all the time regarding the best time of year to come fishing in Costa Rica. The truth is the fishing here is fairly consistent year-round. After all, fish eat every day.
But, armed with an out-of-date tour book, these callers insist that summer is no good. To counter these misconceptions, FishingNosara maintains photographic evidence to the contrary at blog. FishingNosara.com as well as on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Let’s take a glance back at the last few years of fishing in the month of May and prove the tour books wrong. In May 2017, angler Roger Chambers fished for a week in Nosara and closed out the campaign with a four-species day. They had an early roosterfish release, then Capt. William of the Wanderer got a call on the radio from Capt. Carlos on the Discoverer reporting a kettle of yellowfin tuna offshore. The mid-afternoon bite led to dorados and yellowfin tuna on ice for Team Chambers. The final score of the day was a Sailfish release. In May 2016, the Harvester welcomed Ken Richmond and his group of hard-fishing Texans and caught a true fish of a lifetime with a massive 400-plus-pound blue marlin. Also, the 26-foot Explorer scored an 80-plus-pound floor-sweeping wahoo, several nice sailfish and a half-dozen roosterfish releases. Likewise, big cubera snapper were abundant on the 23-foot Adventurer, and the 32-foot Wanderer scored some trips with double-digit sailfish releases. May is also a great time for honeymoons. Newlyweds Daniel and Vicky Martinko scored a mammoth wahoo, a beautiful roosterfish and lots of sailfish during their 2015 trip. In May 2015, the Discoverer brought the house down with a billfish grand slam on May 10. Client Tony King and his group scored a striped marlin estimated around 200 pounds and a larger blue marlin estimated at more than 350 pounds. They added a sailfish to the scorecard to round-out a legendary day of fishing. t’s that time of year again to dust off the rods and reels for the 25th Anniversary Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s (SECF) Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Tournament. With such a special anniversary, there will be many surprises. Over the previous 24 years the tournament has raised more than $567,000, all of which has gone back to the community and the causes SECF supports. The Exchange Club is all about the prevention of child abuse
as well as supporting many area youth-oriented services and organizations. A few of these are Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, Shiloh Youth Ranch, CASTLE, Sebastian Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew, and the list goes on! This year’s tournament will be held again at Capt. Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 1, there will be a captain’s meeting and party, starting with registration at 5 p.m. and the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. This is a great party and an added benefit to the actual tournament. There will be all kinds of drawings as well as a live auction. We have an awesome shirt designed for this year’s tournament, which will be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 2, fishing starts with lines in at 6 a.m. The weigh in starts at 2 p.m., with a cutoff of 5 p.m. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year, and watching fishermen bring in some monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of a guaranteed $19,000 purse. The four main-board payouts will be for grouper, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin. Payouts for the four categories are: 1st place-$1,250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $250; 2nd place-$600, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $150; 3rd place-$400, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $100; 4th place-$250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $50. Some of the other divisions include Junior and Lady Angler. Along with the main board, there is a $1,000 prize for the largest cobia and amberjack. But wait… there’s more! verything about the Bahamas holds a special place in my heart. Forty-five years later, whether I am chartering Duchess or guiding my clients on their own boats, I still feel the excitement of seeing the Bahama Bank as if it were for the first time. Introducing new friends or returning old friends back to the islands never gets dull. Docking at Rosie’s Place on Grand Cay, Old Bahama Bay in West End, or Orchid Bay on Guana Cay, I know we will be welcomed by our island friends and enjoy the rich hospitality that each one provides. Everyone knows my favorite fishing is for pelagic fish. It never gets old hearing the squeal of the reel as a wahoo, dolphin, tuna or marlin strikes the lures of my design. I also enjoy shutting down the diesels and drifting over the reef with spinning rods catching grouper and snapper. I enjoy eating our catch when we arrive and also look forward to seeing my local Bahamian friends who dive and fish, come to the dock to sell us lobster and stone crab, in season, and conch. Fresh bread brought to the docks by the local ladies goes perfectly with the huge bowl of conch salad I make every time I am there. My last trip was extremely special, as I had my son Allan, grandson Marlin, and longtime friends the Sultan family on board the Duchess. We arrived in Grand Cay for Homecoming and The Joe Flanigan Memorial Tournament. Big Joe was my mentor and close friend. His family holds the tournament every year in honor of their father, who loved fishing and diving the Abacos. This event allowed me to visit with old friends and generations of Grand Cay residents. I feel fortunate that my life’s direction has taken me to places in the Bahamas that bring me and others I have shared it with so much joy. Capt. Billy Black has been fishing the productive offshore waters of Florida’s Treasure Coast and the northern Bahamas for decades. Over the years, he has nurtured many great relationships with the Bahamas and its people fishing the classic 50 ft. Hatteras Duchess.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
