ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. I
t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

T
he transition of seasons always brings new opportunity and a change of pace for anglers. Summer to fall offers the richest rewards of any. It’s a time when fish are easiest to find and catch. October has an unlimited array of angling potential for species, tactics and the potential for catching an inshore slam. Let’s start with speckled trout. One of the easiest tactics to catch these fish in fall is under the birds. Typically, this yields smaller trout, but in the fall it is not uncommon to locate many schools holding keeper size trout. I fish a durable soft plastics rigged on ¼- and ½-ounce jigheads. Keeping one rod rigged with each offers several benefits. If the school is moving fast, heavier weight allows for a longer cast. It enables you to pull a few more fish out of the school. If they are really on the move, this can be
the only way to get your lure into the sweet spot. At times, larger trout hang out lower in the water column beneath smaller trout. A heavier jig gets down past smaller fish. On the other hand, you might need the ¼-ounce in order to slow the sink rate when working smaller schools, so the scattered trout have time to find it before it drops out of sight. Here’s a tip: Smash the barb on the hook down. When you are on a school, time is not on your side. You want the trout to fall off the hook once it is in the boat. This allows you to get your lure back out into feeding fish quickly. I typically sling them in without a net. Use the leverage of the rod and the momentum of reeling the fish in. It can take a minute to get the hang of this, but it saves time when working the birds. If I’m on an actively feeding school, I sling them in, let them fall on the deck and cast again. Once we are off the school, I place the fish in the cooler. I also like to wait until a shrimp jumps. Then I cast exactly to that spot. Many times this results in a solid strike. Autumn reds can be found gorging themselves in bayou mouths and marsh drains on outgoing tides as the shrimp, crabs and mullet are making their way out of the shallows. Studying your satellite maps and your tide tables for specific areas will put the odds in your favor and reds in your boat. Flounder can also be found mixed in with the reds as they are starting their winter migration. Flat fish will still be scattered but can be found starting to stage at the major passes. Autumn fishing is a great time to be on the water and a perfect time to introduce young anglers to the sport. The weather is nice, and the fish are hungry! Capt. perations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park have changed over its more than half-century of existence. While no fishing, conching or shelling are allowed, it offers exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the park. The Bahamas National Trust’s mooring system with fees reduces impact on the seabed. All vessels must abide by the park’s rules and regulations at all times. Bahamas National Trust By-Laws • Land and Sea Parks are marine replenishment areas and nurseries for the Bahamas therefore the hunting, trapping, netting, capture, or removal of any fish, turtle, crawfish, conch, whelk, or any marine and/or fisheries resource is prohibited. • The destruction, injury or removal of any plant life, sand, coral sea fan or gorgonians is prohibited. • The molestation, injury or destruction of any land animal, bird or eggs of any animal or bird is prohibited. • Permits may be granted by BNT for the capture or removal of designated land or sea animals or plants required for valid scientific research. • Dumping of waste oil or rubbish in land or sea is prohibited. • No person shall injure, deface or remove any building, structure, signs, ruins or other artifacts. • The posting of any sign, placard, advertisement or notice is prohibited, as is the erection of any building, shed, tent or other structure. • No person shall display, use, fire or discharge any explosives, firearm or harpoon gun. • Offences carry a penalty not to exceed $500 and confiscation of any boat, vessel or aircraft and of all equipment, stores, provisions or other effects used in committing the offence. Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park Rules & Regulations • Trash disposal is not available within Exuma Park—take out everything you bring in. • Anchoring is not permitted in the mooring fields, on reefs or other designated areas. • Stay on marked trails—use Exuma Park Trail Guidelines. • All vessels must operate at idle speed in all mooring field and anchorages. • Jet skies are required to stay at least 300 yards off any moored or anchored vessel • The North tidal creek on Shroud Cay is an idle zone. Motorized vessels are prohibited from other tidal creeks in Shroud Cay. • Pets must be on a leash and are restricted to beaches. • Camping requires a permit. • Open fires and fireworks are not permitted. 2018 Bonito Blast Wrap-Up
T
he sixth annual Bonito Blast, held August 18, 2018, had a fleet of 187 boats and raised approximately $70,000 for Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF.org), and more than 50 veteran anglers, were hosted on 16 of the tournament’s participating boats. Lady angler Christina Fortin, who fished aboard My Other Honey, took first-place in the tournament. Other notable highlights include Karl Kruse, who's dad was a veteran, traveled from Long Island the third year in a row to fish the Bonito Blast, and Dano, from iHeart Radio, fished on the Alikai, owned by DayMaker Fishing Charters. Marjorie Belcher fished on Safari 1 and this is their third year in a row hosting a tournament winner. The winning dolphin, caught by angler Johnathan Kanker, was the only dolphin caught. Brian Mast, U.S. Congressman for the 18th District of Florida, fished the tournament, participating as a veteran in support of veterans, and spoke at the awards ceremony. ‘Thank you every one of you for your service. Whether you served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Kosovo, Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Gulf War, or sometime in between, it doesn’t matter when you served, your community here loves you, they’re proud of you, they can’t thank you enough for your service,” said Mast. “Awesome day on the water, thanks for supporting this great organization, keep doing it, it’s what

Catch & Release Reminders Releasing Caught Fish Helps Ensure Sustainability
Fishing is a favorite pastime of both Florida residents and visitors. Fishing efforts in Florida have increased dramatically over the past decade, making it more important than ever to practice effective catchand-release techniques to reduce fishing impacts. The majority of fishing trips in Florida result in some fish being caught and then released. Regulated species, such as red drum, are released if they are outside the slot limit, either too small or too large. Tarpon and bonefish are examples of fisheries that are strictly catch-and-release only. Some anglers even fish with the intention of releasing everything they catch. Fish are released for a variety of reasons and increasing a fish’s chance of survival after it is released will help ensure that fish populations remain sustainable for future generations.

• Using barbless hooks, or hooks with a flattened barb, is one of the most important things an angler can do to minimize internal damage to the fish and make release quicker and easier. • If a hook cannot be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible. • Use non-stainless-steel hooks, as they will rust and deteriorate out of the fish over time.

Reviving Fish
• If the fish doesn’t immediately swim away and is lethargic or erratic, some resuscitation may be needed. • Revive exhausted but otherwise healthy fish by first placing the fish in the water, one hand under the belly and the other hand holding the bottom lip or tail. • If the vessel is anchored, point the fish head-first into the current to gently force water through the mouth and over the gills. • If the vessel is not anchored or there isn’t a current, hold the fish in the water alongside the boat and gently nudge the boat into gear, forcing water through the gills of the fish. • If you are fishing from a nonmotorized vessel such as a kayak, place the fish in the water, hold its front lip (use a gripping tool if the fish has teeth) and move the fish in a “figure-eight” motion. Never move fish backward in the water, since water will not flow properly through the gills.

ctober's ocean will be one that is in motion on many different levels. A large biomass of mullet (which began arriving in our near shore waters over the last several weeks) will continue to stream through our fishing seascape and pause to take up residence in Martin County`s estuaries, which will also include inlet and surf zones. This seasonal movement of mullet and their arrival in our local waters, heralds the official beginning of fall and the journey mullet take. These large schools of mullet and other baitfish have the tendency to attract and tow many species of hungry, travelling fish along with them,

including pelagics like king and Spanish mackerel, cobia, dolphin, and sailfish. Resident species are in turn activated by the arrival of vast expanses of these baitfish and give local anglers a reference point for nailing down a good spot to fish. While these baitfish typically stay close in proximity to the surf and beach zone and points inside of the inlet (through the lagoon and river), they will sometimes be seen several miles off the beach. Many other species of migrating fish will arrive in the “deep sea zone” during October,
as they are propelled by the same forces of nature that motivate baitfish into their seasonal journey. Wind velocities will noticeably increase this month, making for a choppy offshore playing field. Near shore reefs in 50 to 60 feet of water will become the “go to zone” during these rougher days, allowing fishing crews to take it slow into choppy conditions and make the first offshore stop on a vast array of reef structures that are within three to four nautical miles of our St. Lucie Inlet (for GPS coordinates of these reefs, go to

n October, as we continue through the fall, fishing changes dramatically. The mullet run continues through mid-October for some last chances to catch tarpon at the Crossroads, inlet, and power plant. As the mullet run winds down, it's also a good time to try using live shrimp for snook that are tired of

t’s more than just tricks and treats this October. The waters may be starting to settle after another phenomenal mullet migration this year, and even though the temperature is cooling off, the offshore fishing is just heating up. As the southerly winds of summer switch to the north, all species in the Atlantic start to make their way back down the beach. Mahi-mahi are some of the first to arrive, with quality fish typically migrating down the offshore side of the Eight Mile Reef, all the way out
chasing mullet, and don't forget to try using cut mullet heads for monster snook along the flats. The pompano can start showing up in October mostly along the beaches for surf-casting. Incoming tide is best for pompano with clear water to cast sand fleas and brined clam strips off the beaches using chicken rigs with spider weights. The FishBites flavored bait is also worth trying. Snook season has been great so far with keepers caught near the inlet jetties and beaches. We should start to see the snook move back inshore throughout October where they hang around the bridges, sea walls, and docks. Pitching threadfins and mullet along these structures is the best method. For fly-fishing, use sinking line with heavy chartreuse Clousers along the bridges, poppers or gurglers on the sea walls, and weighted Deceivers or Clousers
along the docks. As the water cools down, we can see pompano along the flats and possible redfish and trout. D.O.A. jigs and Terror-Eyz are great
to 1500 feet of water. I prefer to troll while I’m targeting mahi, unless it’s super calm, in which case I opt to zip around (run and gun) looking for places to deploy a few live baits for short periods of time and then on to the next spot. Look for pieces of float, weed lines and color changes as well as birds feeding and even fish jumping, giving away their hiding spots. This year there has been a tremendous amount of sargassum weed, so I’m betting if you put the time in, and run the distance, you’ll probably find some big mats to try. Even though dolphin are the target species on these run and gun missions, you want to have a lighter rod with a shrimp and jig ready for triple tail hanging around the debris. October offers a range of other species too. There’s a good chance at stumbling across a wahoo, and there

ctober marks the transition into the fall weather patterns along the Treasure Coast. Expect temperatures to begin to cool down somewhat into more comfortable days to enjoy the outdoors, and water temperatures will begin to slowly cool off as well. October provides great weather and hungry fish! The fall mullet run will continue to dominate the area as large schools of finger mullet fill the
beaches, inlets and rivers of the area. It has been an active season this year. You can expect lots of big fish to be feeding on them both day and night. Snook fishing will be best during the night hours on the higher ends of the tides. Live finger mullet, croakers and pigfish will be the best live baits to use. D.O.A. Terror Eyz, Bait Busters and feather jigs will be good artificial lures to use for snook. Try around the jetties, turning basin and bridges as well as many of the deeper docks around the river. Lighted docks are especially productive when fishing at night. Redfish has continued to be a wonderful fishery for us again this year. Each year has seen their population increase and many anglers have enjoyed the experience of fishing a large school of reds this year. October will continue to be a productive month for those who seek redfish on the flats. The new D.O.A. 2.75-inch shrimp or C.A.L. grub tails are two of the
best choices for redfish, along with a variety of live and cut baits. The west shoreline south of Fort Pierce is always a good area when looking for redfish. The trout bite will be good this month. Get out early with a top water lure for some exciting action on the river. Switch to a D.O.A. shrimp or C.A.L. jerk bait later in the mornings. Harbor Branch, Queen's Cove and Middle Cove are all great areas to fish for trout around the Treasure Coast. Look for some sheepshead, black drum and snapper around the bridges, docks and channel edges. The surf will be alive with jacks, snook, bluefish and other predators, which will all be chasing the bait schools along the beach. Snook season has been in full swing for the past month and anglers are always looking for that slot fish to take home. Beaches, jetties, bridges and mangroves are all popular areas to seek snook. s the weather starts to cool off some, you can look for the fishing to get better. The schools of bait fish should be coming in the Fort Pierce Inlet with plenty of action not far behind. The snook bite in the Fort Pierce Inlet should be good for anglers using live baits, like greenies and mullet, and fishing them on the bottom, at places like Judy Rock or the cleaning station, and fish on the outgoing tides. Also, in the Fort
Pierce Inlet, the Spanish mackerel and bluefish will be showing up and they will take anything shiny. Look for trout and redfish in the deeper holes and channels around the flats. They will be taking a live shrimp fished under a popping cork and fish in five-to-seven-feet of water when the water starts to cool down. The local bridges should be holding some nice snapper, sheepshead and black drum. Try fishing a live shrimp on a #2 hook and a halfto-one-ounce weight. Around the south jetty, there should be some flounder on the beach side. A large live shrimp or mud minnows fished on an eighth-or-quarter-ounce Troll-Rite hook. In the surf, the whiting and pompano bite should improve later in the month. Shrimp, clams or sand fleas will all be a good choice.

ctober has arrived and with it will be the start of slightly cooling water temperatures. The waters to our north will cool down faster than the Treasure Coast and this will start our fall mahi run. This is when the mahi start heading south through our area. The fall mahi run is not as large and does not last as long as the spring time run, but there will be more mahi in our area looking for a meal than through the summer time. Trolling is the best-known method for targeting mahi during the fall run. Multitudes of live
bait to catch mahi. Normal tackle set-up used for trolling for mahi is 20-to-30 pounds, but when live bait trolling, use a 50-pound leader as it will be less noticeable at a slower speed. When trolling with live bait, keep your baits spread out at different distances behind your boat and always keep one in your prop-wash. A faster trolling method to cover more ground when targeting mahi is to use rigged ballyhoo and colorful trolling lures. When trolling these baits, 30-pound tackle will still be sufficient, but I would suggest using 60-to-80 pound leader to compensate for the higher speeds (since it is moving faster, it won’t be seen as easily as slower live bait trolling speed). Whichever trolling bait preference you choose, always use mono main line instead of braid, as you will want the stretch for the trolling strike.
then look for the tarpon rolling along the surface. These fish will be off the beach to a mile or two off the beach. Big tarpon are very strong fighters, so you will need to use some heavier gear. I prefer an 8,000 size spinning reel on a 7-foot rod. You will want to use at least 50-pound braid with about 5-feet of 60-to-70-pound leader to withstand the fight of these fish and their rough boney mouth. Cast a lively mullet, or a mullet like lure, in front of the tarpon. When they find your offering, hold on! The fight of a tarpon can last quite a long time but after getting the fish boat side for a picture of two, please revive the fish for a safe release. The water conditions will start getting rougher when the cool fronts start moving in so get out on the water and enjoy some time catching!

Live finger mullet flipped to rolling juvenile tarpon generally bring vicious surface strikes that eventually turn into tarpon hook ups. If you prefer artificials, small mullet shaped topwater and suspending plugs will not go unnoticed. Fly rodders should also throw finger mullet patterns on floating and intermediate lines. Snook numbers will continue to rise in the Sebastian River, as post-spawn fish return from the inlet and ocean. The bridges and oyster bars early and late in the day with live mullet and topwater, then around and under the docks while the sun is overhead with D.O.A. shrimp and jerkbaits,

Indian River Lagoon – The flats
of the central lagoon will be at their best in October. Trout and reds will be in the shallows all day long hunting the masses of mullet that have already begun to invade the lagoon. Find the bait and find the fish is a general rule that is especially true in October. Although live finger mullet will be very plentiful, artificials will allow
you to cover much more area and may be the better choice. Topwater plugs reign supreme in the fall, with jerk baits and suspending plugs, like the MirrOlure Catch 2000 Jr., possibly being even more productive but not as fun. Jack crevalle of all sizes will keep anglers busy between trout bites. The occasional snook will surprise anglers on the flats, but most of the inshore snook will be setting up ambushes along mangrove shorelines and around docks. D.O.A. shrimp and jerkbaits fished in, around and under the cover will draw strikes from linesiders of all sizes.

Redfish, mostly oversized, will join the snook between the jetties for the “fatten up” before winter binge. The snook and reds spread throughout the inlet giving anglers more areas to fish and they also seem to become less picky about what live bait they eat. Croakers are never a bad choice, but pigfish, shrimp, pinfish and mullet will all draw strikes at the right time and tide. Night time will find live baiters floating the channel under A1A bouncing bottom, while plug and jig anglers will be on their favorite rocks east and west of A1A.
Near Shore Atlantic – The fishing along the beaches can be explosive in October. Tarpon will school outside Sebastian Inlet, as long as bait stays available. Live mullet, greenies and even pinfish pitched at pods of rolling fish will bring strikes. Jigs, plugs and flies can also do the job when the bite is on. Spanish mackerel should show up in hoards from the beach out to five miles, wherever the glass minnow are hanging out. Spoons, jigs and flies are all you need to fill the cooler with Spanish in the one-to-ten-pound range.

ctober is a transitional month for offshore fishing. The days are getting shorter and the fish are getting hungrier. Early October can provide some great sea conditions while later in the month the wind will start to blow, and you must pick your days. Grouper and snapper fishing should be solid. The thermocline and cold upwellings will be gone and the fish will get back into their normal feeding patterns. Look for baitfish on the reefs in 60 and 90 feet and you can bet there will be big fish in the area. Try fishing on top of the reef near bait schools. Don’t be overly concerned about getting right on the ledge. Big predator fish will get out and hunt when they are feeding, and they will find your bait. The important part is using quality bait and presenting it properly, rather than being on the exact spot. Throw

fresh chunks of baitfish in the water every couple of minutes to increase your odds. A chum bag is great but, sometimes it can draw sharks and remoras that will drive you crazy. Another advantage of being away from the ledge is that when you hook that big grouper, he will not be able to charge into the deep hole. You’ll have a much better shot at turning him. The mullet run will be going
strong all month. This means there will be solid action close to shore and around Sebastian Inlet. Early October is probably the best month for large tarpon along the beach in our area. Look for them busting big mullets along the beach and throw a large mullet in the melee. Be prepared to start the boat and follow these bruisers if you get hooked solid. Look for big kings in-close as well
as other predators around the bait schools. Drifting live baits or a frozen sardine in these areas can produce some great action. Use a circle hook and set the drag tight enough to set the hook when something hits. Dolphin should be a good bet this month. Trolling a typical dolphin spread in the Gulf Stream will catch fish. As usual, troll around the birds, weed lines and color changes. When the bite slows, one effective trick is to set out a chum bag and wait for the fish to come to you. Turn the engine off around a fishy looking area and put out a chum bag. Be patient and let the chum deploy for the better part of an hour. Drop a couple pieces of chunk bait in the water on a 6/0 circle hook and relax. Keep your eye on the water and have a live bait ready for finicky fish. A piece of single strand wire will catch the occasional wahoo. Watch out for the shrimp boats out in that 130-foot area. The black fins, bonito, cobia, and other predators will swarm around them early in the morning as they release their bycatch. Try chumming with a frozen block or chunks in the general area of the boats to get the bite going again. Best of luck out there and remember that you can’t catch ’em sitting on the couch! ctober means mullet run, which can be extremely exciting and frustrating, all mixed into one. Everything from snook, tarpon, sharks and big jack's will be blasting these mullet. Look for the action to be the best during the high tide along beaches and throughout the Indian River lagoon. A lot of your bait fish imitation lures will work best during low light. Morning and evening times will be prime time to throw a D.O.A. Bait Buster, any top water lures in a black and silver or red and white color pattern. Everyday can be different fishing around the mullet schools. One day they will want something that looks exactly like the bait. And the very next day, they will be eating something that is one of my all-time favorite lures, the

Fly Fishing Corner By Capt. Michael Mauri
was searching through my pictures trying to find inspiration for this article when I came across one trip that left an imprint back in July. This story is about my client and friend Bob. Bob’s success on the water was pure heart and dedication so it deserves to be shared. Bob is from Philadelphia and he booked his first trip with me in July of 2017. He is now one of my most frequent customers and we have become great friends. He gave me the nickname Captain No Slack and tells others my guiding service is fly fishing boot camp but nonetheless he returns for every season to enjoy the variety of species Stuart has to offer. Bob arrived in July to target the monster ‘”False Albacore” and king mackerel. We fished for three days and had a lot of success and decided we would fish a few hours on the day of his evening departure. I took him to Bullshark Barge a little later than usual in hopes the other boats would
be gone. Boy was I wrong! There were boats everywhere. I decided to anchor my boat a little further away from the other boats with my trolling motor. I set Bob up with a sinking line and a 1/0 Clouser. The current was really strong that day with wind and good size waves pushing from the Southeast. It didn’t take long for Bob to hook into a nice size fish. The boat was bouncing up and down in the waves while Bob was playing the fish from the stern casting deck. I was standing next to him when the unthinkable happened. In a split second, Bob lost his balance and fell overboard with his fly rod in hand. I immediately got in position to jump in after him and I see his arm come up with fly rod still in hand followed by his head. He immediately yelled, “Take the rod for me.” I took the rod while he swam to the boat and climbed up the ladder. As if nothing happened he grabbed the rod and landed a nice kingfish. We ended that day with two nice

s the year winds down and fall approaches, divers on the Treasure Coast can expect great diving provided the weather cooperates. Autumn brings cold fronts and shorter weather windows so divers are wise to stay prepared to take advantage of calm seas when the opportunity arises. Additionally, many divers are excited to see how the large swells from Hurricane Florence may have affected the local reefs. After a period of choppy weather, a little scouting will help determine conditions beneath the surface and make for a more enjoyable day. Summertime has passed but visibility and water temperatures are still nice on the Treasure Coast due to the proximity of local waters to the warm Gulf Stream current

Passing cold fronts with strong winds can make area inlets challenging or even treacherous and visibility poor near shore, but just a few miles out visibility quickly returns as divers near the gulf stream waters. The generally north-bound current does a great job of flushing away turbid water and replacing it with clear conditions rather quickly. Weather windows this time of year may be short and calm seas may only last for a day or two. Divers should stay prepared by having tanks

filled in advance, dive sites selected, and gear packed so when conditions cooperate on short notice they can take advantage. During October visibility reports could be scarce and divers may have to do some reconnaissance when planning the next trip. The Titan Tug out of Stuart is a great dive site to test visibility, temperature and current since it is directly east of the St Lucie Inlet and just a few dozen feet from the Six Mile Reef. A quick bounce dive to determine conditions could prove beneficial: if visibility is
bad, head south towards the Loran Tower ledge or reefs off Hobe Sound. If visibility is good, dive sites closer to shore may be better, including the Donaldson Reef area, Guardian Reef, Pipe Barge or the Cement (concrete) Barge. This time of year brings changes to local reefs in the form of more frequent strong winds and cold fronts. When conditions allow though, divers can make great dives if they remain prepared and poised to take advantage of narrow weather windows when they arise.

Tug Penobscot Becomes

ug Penobscot was neglected and abandoned at Port Canaveral after Hurricane Matthew. After the storm, the port authority secured the tug and attempted to locate the owner. All documents and records had been removed from the tug. Concerned
about the vessel and the environment, the U.S. Coast Guard started the slow process to remove fuel from the tug. The Port Canaveral harbormaster organized an auction hoping someone would claim the tug. After several failed efforts to dispose of the tug, a gentleman came forward and
took ownership and transferred it to a charitable organization, Sea-Life Habitat Improvement Project, Inc. (aka SHIP) of St. Lucie County. SHIP was founded to establish artificial reefs offshore in St. Lucie County. Working with CRB, a vessel cleanup company, SHIP raised enough
money to arrange towage from Port Canaveral to the Fort Pierce Harbor commercial docks. Unable to raise $100,000 to fund the entire project, in late July SHIP transferred ownership to the MCAC Artificial Reef Fund, which establishes artificial reefs in Martin County. The Port of Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County supported the project by donating three months of dockage fees to MCAC, setting a departure deadline of August 24. MCAC Reef Fund Vice-President, Dave Powell, would normally have had a team to tackle this project; however, with the deaths of MCAC Artificial Reef Fund member and

diver, Kerry Dillon, Fund member Karl Wickstrom, and Fund president, John Burke fishing in Alaska, he had only one month to complete the project. The last week in July was used to negotiate and purchase the tug from SHIP for $10 and to negotiate a contract with CRB for the cleanup, inspections, towage and sinking offshore Martin County. The site selected in cooperation with the county and the state is in 185 feet of water at the south end of a line of existing artificial reefs. At the north end of this line, rests the coastal freighter “Wickstrom Reef ”. Just north of the new sinking site sits the 200-foot bulk carrier “Haley Glasrud”. During the four-week project, MCAC needed to raise additional funds to cover the $100,000 total project cost after the Reef Fund’s large donation. The first sponsor/partner was Ted and Lynne Glasrud, who were given the naming rights. To recognize their three granddaughters, Jessica, Madison and Allison Brause, the new reef gained the name, BRAUSE GIRLS. Additionally, more than twenty-five sponsors committed to support the project including a SHIP sponsor, CCA (Coastal Conservation Assoc.) and Carlson Enterprises of the Treasure Coast. Initially, there were concerns the entire process could not be completed in 24 days. CRB’s cleanup process began on August 1 under Joe Weatherby’s supervision with the assistance of lead men, Chip Powell and Doug Lowell. Seven to 15 men worked 12-hour days, 7-days a week to meet the 24-day deadline. Numerous contracted companies supported the project. They included
McCulley Marine Services for towage; the port of Fort Pierce for cranes; CBI for pump-out service and the Safari I, which provided a spectator boat for the deployment. Dive News Network provided video and drone coverage. During the cleanup, Bill Horn, on behalf of MCAC, undertook the permitting process with Martin County, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, State of Florida and the U.S. Coast Guard. Weatherby organized inspections by these same agencies. CRB employees were so supportive they painted the external surfaces to make the tug look good. On August 23, McCulley Marine Services personnel arrived and organized the towage of the “new” 62-year old tug. At 4 a.m. on August 24, the Brause Girls began its 25-mile voyage to the sinking site. More than 30 boats watched the mid-day sinking aboard sponsor boats Safari I and Wet and Wild, along with special guests and NBC reporters. Due to the low free board on the tug, holes were cut in the deck so once the deck was flooded from the open sea chest flooding inside the tug, the vessel submerged in a matter of minutes. The sinking was successful with the tug landing in an upright position. Within an hour, divers from Stuart Scuba descended and videoed the new reef and removed the go-pro cameras. Forlifer and Rochedieu win TCC August Tournament
reasure Coast Casters (TCC) held its first Senior Division inshore tournament of the 2018-2019 season on August 26. The tournament was won by Kendrick Forlifer (high school division), and Michael Rochedieu (middle school division). Per tournament organizers Cammie and Capt. Joe Ward, “Boats departed from Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce and mangrove snapper was the fish of the day. All our anglers reported catching fish, with quite a few mutton snapper mentioned, but they were undersize, along with a few short lanes.” Other species weighed included only one sheepshead, 1.4-pounder by Kendrick Forlifer, and the largest fish of the tournament, a 1.1-pound snapper, caught by Michael Rochedieu.

Fall Boat Trailer Care A
s we approach the fall boating season, it’s time to look at some of the important parts of your boat trailer, such as springs, hubs, bearings, tires, all the stuff we normally neglect: • Wheels: If they have any play as you attempt to shake them, then the bearings probably need attention, a bearing repack and rear seal change should be done at least once a year. • Springs: Look for heavy or encrusted rust and separation. If you see these symptoms, you may want them checked by a reliable trailer shop, broken springs can cause serious problems and ruin your entire outing. • Tires: Here in Florida with the extreme heat, tires tend to get dry and actually start cracking. This will at times cause a loss of air pressure and could cause a blowout. If this happens at highway speeds, it truly could be disastrous • Winch Strap: This is another important item to look at. Check it for dry rot, check the stitching where the hook is attached, and if there’s a question, replace it. They’re not expensive. If you are stopped and you accelerate quickly and the strap parts, your boat could slide off the trailer. Winch straps are not expensive, but boats are! Be sure you have a safety chain or cable as a second means of support.
• Brakes: If your trailer has brakes, they need to be inspected periodically as well. Check the brake pads to insure they are intact and that the backing plate is not rusted. Contrary to popular belief, brakes on a boat trailer can last for several years if they are maintained properly. • Lights: Some people think lights are only required for night use. Not so. You need to have working lights in every trailer stop, with turn signals being the most important. In most cases on boat trailers, if you have a light out, it could be as simple as a bad ground. Checking them before you leave home could save you the price of a citation, or worse, an accident. As boaters, we all tend to take very good care of our boats, but we usually neglect our trailers, and let’s face it, as trailer boaters, what’s the most important part of your rig? Engle and Frost Win September BCFA Tourney T
he Backcountry Fishing Association’s September tournament was productive, despite a cold, rainy and aggressive start. Fifteen boats braved the crazy weather and some of those returned with some slobs and gators. Derek Engle and Darren Frost took first-place with a 7.15-pound trout and a 7.89-pound red. With a total weight of 15.04-pound the pair took home $376.50. They also won the trout Calcutta of $100, and the redfish Calcutta of $80. Lewis Arnold and Jason Bailey took second-place with a 5.21-pound trout and a 3.34-pound redfish. Their total weight of 8.55-pounds earned them a check of $225.90. The third-place slot was won by Monty Peters and Jeff Ellis. For their 3.52-pound trout and a 3.95-pound redfish (total weight of 7.47-pounds), they took home a check for $150.60. Andy Fantini and Chelsea Hampson took fourth-place with 3.98-pound trout and a 3.46-pound redfish. Dustin Bragmen and his

alternate took fifth-place out of 21 boats with a 4.75-pound redfish and a 2.28-pound trout. Lorae' Simpson earned the Lady Angler of the month title, with a 3.69-pound redfish and a 1.88-pound trout (combined total weight of 5.57-pounds), which earned her a a $25 Taco Dive gift card. The Backcountry Fishing Association is a 10-month circuit, which runs from January through October, finishing with its two-day Classic, where the top team will win a 14-foot Billfish boat, motor and trailer combo.
The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers monthly opportunities to win cash and earn points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. The tenth installment of the series, the Classic, takes place October 6-7, 2018, with the captain’s meeting on Friday, October 5.

Fishing for Futures Makes a Difference I

t may have been a Day for Kids but some of the adults made out well at the inaugural Fishing for Futures tournament benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. The tournament, founded by TRM Construction, piggybacked off Day for Kids, a national event hosted by Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The fishing extravaganza featured an inshore and offshore tournament to kick off the Labor Day weekend at Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce on Saturday, Sept. 1. Day for Kids is an event recognized for its advocacy of youth through the nationwide programs of the Boys and Girls Clubs. Clubs around the country cordoned off a little section of their universe to celebrate their youth with games, food and outdoor activities. The Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County’s little section of the universe took place at Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce. With several acres set aside for the kids’ activities in bounce houses, water slides, and a kickball field, there was no shortage of space for them to run

and play. A group of dancers from the club’s Chuck Hill Unit performed their choreographed routine to the crowd at fishing tournament weighin. Club kids were also treated to some time on the water for fishing, some enjoying a morning or afternoon excursion with chaperones on the deep-sea fishing charter boat, Fort Pierce Lady, a deep-sea fishing charter boat. Some of the junior anglers had never fished before or even been on a boat. The marina’s location was a double-edged pleasure as this year’s event was shared with Fishing for Futures. Following a day of fishing, the boat captains started coming in mid-afternoon with their competitive catches to see who would walk away as the fishing champion of the day. One of the event sponsors earned a trifecta of fishing recognition by taking the first, second and third place spots in the inshore portion of the tournament. Backcountry Fishing Association’s Derek Engel and Daren Frost took first place with an amazing 95.5-inch overall length of their fish that were caught and released in the inshore tournament. Lewis Arnold and Jason Bailey took second place with an impressive 87.5-inches, and Lorae Simpson and Zach Foltz took third place with 71.5-inches. The offshore division started out with some high winds and whitecaps but that didn’t deter the captains who had their eyes on the prize. Of the three fish allowed for the tournament, only the kingfish was
getting hooked. It was T.J. Keifer and Tony Vercillo earning the top spot $3,500 prize for their 27.4-pound kingfish. “The event was a success because of the sponsorship partnerships with TRM Construction, the Law Office of Villafranco and Garcia, Southern Eagle Distributing, Bonner Bar, Paella King, DLF Media, and UBU Brands. Our staff that has worked on this for the last several months. We gave the kids a day of fun, memories to keep and planted the seed for how they should work with children when they are in our position one day,” said Will Armstead, CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. onathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP) will host the twelfth annual Fire Fest on Saturday, October 20, 2018, 1-9 p.m. JDSP Fire Fest is all about prescribed fire and educating the public on how this tool benefits and protects Florida’s natural areas and wildlife habitat. While once a natural, frequent occurrence throughout much of our state, fires became infrequent and restricted in
the early 20th century. As a result, wildlife and plants that needed fire suffered, and wildfires became an issue. ith a little math from this old engineer and some hungry central Florida permit, dinner was M’m, M’m good! Capt John Milroy, Scott Davis and I headed out the St. Lucie Inlet recently targeting permit and cobia on my 24’ Ranger “R KA NU.” As we headed north along the beach, greenies were everywhere. In about 10 minutes, we added 30 to go along with the 10 small crabs from Fish Heads Bait & Tackle. We ran north, waking up a few large turtles, but no cobia. North of the Martin/St. Lucie county line, we started drifting close to the beach. It was time for a math lesson. Light fishing gear + crab on the bottom = permit. Heavy spinning reel + greenies = cobia. After releasing a small permit, margates and several spinner sharks, including one six-footer, we got serious with our math. The permit hit hard, with four runs to the bottom of the Penn reel. Capt. John ran in circles as the permit circled us eight times. After a long fight, I brought a 30-pound permit alongside. Scott waited nervously with an 18-inch-wide net, knowing if he blew this opportunity he would never live it down. After some fist bumps and another spinner shark, we headed home in a 1- to 2-foot swell at 11:30 a.m. We never found cobia, but the one bruiser permit was enough to complete the equation.

wordfishing is more of a south Florida thing. But on good-weather days when they’re not chasing tuna or wahoo, there’s a group of Melbourne fishermen who gear up with big Lindgren Pitman 1200 electric reels and make a 40mile run out of Sebastian Inlet to the middle of the Gulf Stream. They drop foot-long strip baits rigged with bonito, dolphin or wahoo bellies into the darkness of 1,500 feet. With 10 pounds of lead and lights staggered up 65-pound braid, they wait… sometimes all day for a swordfish to bite. Saturday, Aug. 18 was one of those days. Capt. Roger Montz pointed his 36’ Yellowfin offshore with a plan to take advantage of this year’s Atlantic red snapper season before heading to deep water in search of swordfish. On board were Logan, Montz’s 16-year-old son who works at Strike Zone Fishing in Melbourne; Matt Fowler, who also works at Strike Zone; and Ron Yampolsky, of Corey’s Bagels in Melbourne. “It was a zoo,” said Yampolsky of the red snapper scramble. “Every spot had like 10 to 20 boats on it.” In short order, the anglers picked up their limit of red snapper, four fish that weighed about 10-pounds each, and they headed out for the deep drop. In the Gulf Stream, Logan manned the reels all day long. With two baits out, the high-schooler hooked landed his first-ever swordfish, an 85-pounder that Yampolsky called “perfect eating size.” And the boat picked up another not-so-widely-known species for the supper table, an Atlantic pomfret (brama brama). Pomfret live in depths down to more than 3,000 feet in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. “It’s bycatch, but it’s actually better eating than the swordfish,” Yampolsky said. “The meat is like a huge, giant piece of pompano. It’s really better than pomano. It’s white meat, and it’s got a texture similar to swordfish, but it’s less fishy.” Yampolsky said they catch a few pomfret while deep dropping for swordfish and would probably catch more by sizing down to target them. This was the biggest one Yampolsky has seen. He estimated its weight at 30 pounds.

and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. He’s one of those anglers who knows there are still plenty of fish in the famous inshore waters around Titusville. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. That fly worked for the 26-incher on the cover, but this time of year presentation is much more important than fly selection. ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. O
ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right

gear. If you throw a hollow frog like the one in this photo over matted grass and he bites, you probably won’t get him in using monofilament line and a rod and reel from the department store.
