DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com

DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds
or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.
DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. Florida Keys
DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. F
ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. I
t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

Bring Back the Land & Water Conservation Fund By Patrick Morrow
R
ecently, I returned from a trip offshore to Stuart’s Sandsprit Park, ecstatic with a 40-pound cobia in the box. It dawned on me that Sandsprit Park is a priceless local amenity, and an example of wise policies encouraging public recreation and access. I’ve wondered how Martin County afforded to purchase such choice waterfront property. Well, a more than 50-year-old federal program called the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) helped make the project possible. LWCF also helped pay for Jaycee Park in Fort Pierce, Round Island Riverfront Park in Vero Beach and Everglades National Park. Thanks to more than $1 billion invested in Florida, we all enjoy LWCF-funded public lands statewide. LWCF funds are not your tax dollars. The LWCF Act of 1965 commits a small portion of royalties from offshore drilling to conservation and outdoor recreation programs. LWCF in no way incentivizes new drilling, either. The funds simply help state and local agencies keep us on the water, in the woods and prosperous. In Florida, the Department of Environmental Protection administers the program on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Eligible grant applicants include governmental entities in charge of public outdoor recreation. LWCF puts a dollar toward every local dollar spent, including donations of land and in-kind donations. Sadly, Congress allowed LWCF to expire Sept. 30. The House and Senate are currently working on legislation to bring back the fund. If
these bills fail, Florida would suffer profoundly. We’ve become our nation’s third most populous state, and are growing rapidly. Without LWCF funding, we won’t be able to acquire as much land for parks and conservation. It will cost our outdoor recreation industries jobs and revenues. The FWC estimates that fishing generates almost $9 billion annually, hunting $1.6 billion, wildlife viewing $4.9 billion, and recreational boating $10.4 billion. Ask Senators Rubio and Nelson, plus your member of Congress to push for LWCF legislation.
LWCF Works Around The State • Broward County’s Markham Park includes access to superb freshwater fishing in the Everglades, plus world-class shooting/ archery facilities. • LWCF put more than $900,000 toward Pinellas County’s Caladesi Island State Park, one of the region’s few remaining natural islands that includes a marina. • LWCF provided $30 million toward improving fish and wildlife populations in Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress Preserve. • LWCF paid for more than a thousand acres of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The acquisitions protect the watershed that flows into the last extensive healthy seagrass meadows in the state. • LWCF put more than $1.7 million toward the purchase of the 9 miles of barrier island that became St. George Island State Park. • Located at Ponce Inlet, the 52-acre Lighthouse Point Park offers great access for anglers and surfers in rare undisturbed beach, dune and coastal hammock habitats. • Melbourne’s Ballard Park offers boating access to the Eau Gallie River and Indian River Lagoon, along with many other park amenities.

I
n the heart of Palm Coast, also known as “the quieter side of Florida,” is a hidden gem: Princess Place Preserve. Named for its unique history, this 1,500-acre wildlife preserve is home to some of the best camping, fishing and hiking in north Florida. Its close proximity to Pellicer Creek, Moody Creek and the
Matanzas River makes for a great family fishing destination. Inside the preserve, there are many private campgrounds, with some featuring their own docks and waterfront views. Located inside the preserve is also a well-kept boat/kayak launch, which allows for easy access to the main waterway, Pellicer Creek. If you don’t want to bring your kayak or simply don’t have one, there is a kayak outpost named Sunrise Outdoors that will deliver a kayak to Princess Place Preserve and pick it up the next day. Pellicer Creek, one of the main fishing outlets in Flagler County, is an undisturbed salt marsh that opens up to the Matanzas River. Heading out of the kayak launch inside of Princess Place, Pellicer Creek will take you to a big body of water that may seem like an infinite fishing hotspot. If you make a right once you reach this opening, you will hit the Pellicer Flats. These flats are quite extensive, but they make targeting the fish much easier. At one time these flats were home to some of the best snook fishing in north Florida. While snook aren’t as abundant anymore, you can still expect an occasional linesider along with redfish, trout and flounder. Fishing these flats is similar to other inshore fishing. The universal light-wire jig head and Gulp! Shrimp combo is a go-to, with paddletails and popping corks being equally effective. At the end of the day, pulling up to your campground and not having to trailer your kayak is a great feeling. There are fire pits as well as grills at each campground that make cooking your catch quick and easy. Primitive campgrounds and other lodging options allow you to get the rest you need to be back on the water early the next day. Capt. Alex, of the Harvester, ran more than 200 charter trips during the last year, so it’d be understandable if he wanted to take some time to recuperate. But Alex is a pure fisherman, so instead of kicking back he loaded up for a trip to Puerto Calero off the coast of Morocco. There he served on the crew of the Lydia and topped the scoreboard with the first marlin release of a tournament. This was a great experience for Capt. Alex to fish on a different boat in a different ocean. It was also great to see our local hero make big waves on the big stage! Back in Costa Rica, Capt. William, of the Wanderer, and Capt. Francisco, of the Explorer, oversaw maintenance of the boats. Keeping a fleet of sportfishing boats running in such a remote environment requires patience and ingenuity, but these legendary captains have both traits in excess. In mid-October, the Nosara area was inundated with historic flooding. The Rio Nosara swelled to 30 feet above its usual level and left many residents stranded. The FishingNosara team sprang into action and used the 23-foot Adventurer to save multiple neighbors from the floods. Videos of this “Tico Navy” in action quickly went viral (check the FishingNosara Facebook and Instagram feed to see for yourself). All credit is due to the crews and staff for their bravery and selflessness. All in all, it’s been an interesting off-season. We can’t wait to get the boats wet in November for another great season of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica!
D
uring the off-season in northern Costa Rica, the FishingNosara team spent the last two months gearing up for the new season. Their five boats were completely disassembled, sanded, repainted and reassembled. After another 800-plus-trip season, the crews earned some much needed R&R. The problem is these guys have a love of fishing so deep in their bones that they will not be kept away from the water. Capt. Carlos, of the Discoverer, finished his maintenance early so he could run trips in September and October, which is almost unheard of in Costa Rica. He got out to the blue water, nabbed an awesome blue marlin release and backed it up with big dorados and big numbers of yellowfin tuna. FishingNosara ran a few dozen trips during the so-called offseason and saw the fishery has reset itself into the winter patterns, which bring more dorado and fewer yellowfins. There are a lot of sailfish and marlin feeding on the mahi-mahi. This pattern typically lasts into late March when the big schools of yellowfin tuna move in from the north. The El Nino blew through two years ago and disrupted this pattern, but we anticipate things will return to normal this season and for the next few years.

n 1985, long before there were so many events to raise awareness of breast cancer, the Stuart Sailfish Club hosted the inaugural Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament to benefit local breast cancer related organizations. Thirty-three years later, the tournament is still going strong and still raising money to benefit those on the Treasure Coast fighting breast cancer. The Stuart Sailfish Club’s SaltWater Sisters 33rd annual Lady Angler Fishing Tournament was held this year on September 14-15 and was deemed a great success, raising funds to benefit local breast cancer organizations and scholarship funds. With more than a dozen women, and a few dedicated fellows too, organizers pulled off a fishing competition, raffle of a golf cart, huge silent and live auctions, costume contest and

not one, but two parties! The event was held at Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina. “This was a really exciting tournament again this year,” said Jason MacKenzie, co-chair of the tournament. “We had more boats and anglers than the last few years and we certainly raised more money. We’re so happy to be able to help those in our community fighting breast cancer.” Funds raised will benefit Friends in Pink, a local not-forprofit organization that helps pay the medical bills for those in the community who are fighting breast cancer and are uninsured or underinsured. It will also benefit Windsor Community Angels, an organization that provides free mammograms and diagnostic ultrasounds to detect breast cancer. Lastly, a certain portion of the funds raised will go to

“B
e at the house at 5:45 a.m.,” said Billy O. on a warm Saturday morning as a slight breeze blew from the west and the sky was overcast. Billy and I knew of each other in high school, but we weren’t close friends. He was a football star and I was the yearbook photographer. Twenty years later, we were at our high school reunion, telling stories of
hunting alligators and fishing. An instant friendship was formed. When he invited me to go fishing with him and his family in south Florida, I jumped at the opportunity. Billy captains the Miss Maddison with a crew of two, his 12-yearold son, Bryan, and 16-year-old daughter, Maddison. Bryan is an impressive young angler who can identify more saltwater fish species
than most adults. Maddison is a lifeguard with a love of the ocean. Our first stop was to catch baitfish. Billy maneuvered the boat into position, and Bryan and Maddison quickly cast out sabiki rigs - groups of several small hooks attached to the end of a fishing line. It was amazing to watch this crew in action. Bryan and Maddison pulled in line after line of baitfish, with Billy switching
back and forth to quickly get the lines back in the water. When the top water swirl disappeared, we moved to another spot, and I watched the scenario play out over and over again until the baitwell was full. As we headed offshore, we shared stories of fishing and boating. Bryan filled my head with knowledge about the different species of saltwater fish. Maddison talked about sea

turtles and her goal of working in the medical field. Billy remained on the hunt for fish. He shared his knowledge of boating, wind direction, tides and seas, as well as navigating and using landmarks to determine distance – all useful knowledge every boater should know. Billy gave directions on which rod and reel to use, then Bryan swung into action. It was apparent they had done this before. Bryan caught the first fish, a snapper too small to keep. After catching a few more snapper, we started seeing dolphins and sharks in the area. We decided to move to the next fishing spot where we saw more dolphin. Another stop and, finally, we were right in the action. Bryan and Billy got Maddison rigged up and she landed a little tunny, more commonly known as a bonito. Within moments, another line at the bow started zinging. There is nothing like the sound of a line screaming off the reel when a fish takes the bait. My turn. I’ll admit, I was out of practice, but Billy kept me on the

hanksgiving dinner, the Turkey Bowl, Black Friday and don’t forget, Mahi Madness! November offers something for everyone, and if you like fish tacos, sailfish, grouper, and hanging with the family, you’re in luck. November and December have always shown us great fishing off the Treasure Coast, but over the last 10 years, the mahi fishing has been exceptional. Trolling, live baiting, chunking, or chumming; dolphin respond to it all, so it really comes down to personal preference. I’ve always preferred trolling for them, but there is no denying the effectiveness of live baiting, and I have to admit, it’s a pretty exciting, aggressive bite.
Under ideal circumstances I recommend trolling till you get a bite, then tossing out live baits on smaller spinning rods to take advantage of the spot. While trolling, fish a few dink baits, but definitely fish a couple larger too. For mahi, big baits work wonders. I bump up my speed to 5.5 to 8 knots. It helps cover more ground and also raises bigger fish. I usually pull a couple lures made by Scylla as my bigger baits in the short rigger position. The extra speed really brings them to life and if there is a quality fish in the area, that’s usually where he shows up. I just got a new set of 22-foot carbon fiber outriggers from Rupp. Not only do they look awesome and have built in pulleys for ease of use, they increase my spread by more than 15%, and are much stiffer. he fishing changes a lot this time of year as the weather slowly cools down in November. The snook have moved further inshore back in the St. Lucie River where they hang around structure such as bridges, seawalls, docks, and mangroves. The big keeper snook are caught mostly along the river bottom under the bridges. The best baits for them are “diving baits” that will swim down to the bottom near the bridge abutments. Croakers

rontal energy born from arctic weather systems will sculpt the liquid playing field of offshore fishermen this November. Like pawns in a great, weather chess game, cold fronts will begin to rhythmically descend across the United States from the north and west and sweep across our Florida peninsula to become offshore weather makers that will chisel a choppy and rough texture upon the ocean's surface during

have become my favorite diving bait. To catch croakers, we fish around docks with a small hook and weight. We use 60- or 80-pound leader and 6/0 circle hooks through the nose of the croaker and cast them gently against the up-current or sides of the abutments. Let them dive down and stop at the bottom. Make sure your drag is set very tight and hold on! For
lures, we have caught the big “bridge snook” jigging D.O.A. Bait Busters and Bucktail Jigs slowly along the bottom. As the water temps go down, the big snook love to sit belly-down on the bottom 10-to-15-foot depth. In the Indian River, we start to see more redfish at the causeway bridges. Big shrimp and greenies work for them. The redfish and

User-friendly weather windows will open between fronts and allow anglers to target the visiting fish that have set up shop in anticipation of the winter season.
Weather savvy websites like windfinder.com will best help anglers to locate favorable weather windows and forecasts (out to 10 days), which will enable the best plans for offshore fishing outings. Once offshore, anglers will find lane snapper in large numbers. These snapper will be the "Fish Flavor of the Month" and will congregate around the many reef sites that are just east of Martin County in depths from 50 to 150 feet of water with the greatest concentration of lanes being found in 55 feet of water around the artificial reef system called the "Donaldson Reef ". GPS coordinates for these reefs can be found at martinreefs. com. Kingfish, cobia, and grouper will also be found on and around these bottom structures and will prove to be worthy, scaly adversaries to all of the salty grocery collectors of November.
trout can also be caught along the mangroves and flats. We drift downwind while casting downwind in 2-to-3-feet of water using “Giles Jigs”, D.O.A. C.A.L. jigs, spoons, and topwater plugs. When fishing for big trout, being “stealthy” is very important, so wade-fishing is a great option in the Indian River. The Spanish mackerel should start schooling up off Peck Lake Beach for fun with the family. My favorite mackerel lure is the Gulfstream Flash Minnow in chartreuse green color. The tube jigs and Got-Cha plugs work great also. For fly-fishing I use chartreuse Clouser flies with an intermediate fly line and super-fast stripping. Mixed in with the mackerel are bluefish and jacks. November is usually the start of the pompano fishing season for surfcasting from the beaches, jigging the causeways, and sight-fishing the flats. Whenever cruising the river, look behind you for “skipping pompano” and have a rod ready.

ovember is always a fun month to enjoy the fishing along the Treasure Coast. We are in the middle of our winter transition and you can also count on cooler temperatures that will start the thermometer sliding when it comes to the water temps as well. The days will remain nice and warm, but the nights will become cooler this month. It’s time to change your fishing tactics out on the water. We enjoyed a very mild winter this past year and hopefully it will be the same again this winter. The fall mullet run will continue into November and bring lots of action to the inlets, rivers and beaches throughout the area. Trout will continue to be a target of many anglers. The trout bite will

ovember is a time to be thankful for the calm days with cool crisp air as we approach winter season. The winds will be picking up and on the days that we can make it
be good on the flats, but you must move to the deeper areas as the temperatures cool the water down. Look for them to be in three to six feet of water this month. My favorite lures are D.O.A. Shrimp or Deadly Combos when trout fishing. Don’t forget to fish the sand holes and drop offs on the flats. Many sand holes are much deeper than the flat and you can expect some nice fish to be hiding in them waiting for that easy meal to drift by. Harbor Branch is especially productive for me during this time of year as well as the Midway Road area. The pompano beginning to return to the river and will be a favorite target for anglers throughout the winter. When fishing the surf, use sand fleas or clams and the same in the river. Don’t forget to try a Doc’s Goofy Jig for the pomps. Many are located when they skip behind the boat wake. Keep your eyes open for them. The snook bite will continue to be good, especially at night. The inlet, jetties, bridges and docks around the river will be holding snook. Lighted docks are very popular when night fishing. Live baits, Bait Busters and TerrorEyz are very popular for snook
offshore, there will be an abundance of fish to catch. Grab your lucky hat and bring the family along for a great day of fishing on the Treasure Coast. Grouper fishing will be excellent as the cooling waters will turn these grumpy guys frisky. Get ready for some mighty fish brawls as the gag and red grouper will be taking the bait and become the main course on a stacked menu of delicious table fare. The mackerel will make their presence known near the surface and along weed-lines, so prepare your favorite spoons and Gotcha’ lures for some surface breaking action. The snappers will be nice and fat from the summer and we forecast plenty of grey and muttons in November. There will be a shift in habitat as snappers tend to migrate toward warmer waters. If the bite is not on at your local honey hole, head closer to the warm Gulf Stream
and keep an eye out for temperature changes in the water. The mahi have been showing up over the past few weeks and our boats continue have double digit catches of big bulls and cows. We have seen wahoo and tuna hitting our decks and hope that they will linger throughout November. Keep your reel ready so that you can take advantage of the cool and fish-able days of November. ou can look for plenty of action around the Fort Pierce Inlet and in the turning basin when the bluefish, Spanish mackerel and big jacks are following the bait schools from the ocean. There should also be some bonito and sharks mixed in.
Find the birds and the schools of bait and the fish will be there. Try a live bait or anything shiny like a spoon or a Gulfstream Flash jig. On the flats, the trout and redfish should be in the deeper cuts and channels along the Intracoastal. Try using a finger mullet or a live shrimp fished under a popping cork or a top water bait at daylight or just before dusk. The snook fishing should be red hot around the area docks and bridges. Again, live baits like a mullet, pinfish or a shrimp will be your best bet. Along the channel edges the snapper, sheepshead and a few black
drum should be active when the tide is moving. Anglers using a live shrimp fished on a #2 hook, an 18inch, 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a ½-ounce or 1-ounce weight depending on the current will have the best results. You can try your luck at the south jetty for a few flounder and use a live shrimp and a ⅛-ounce or ¼-ounce Troll-Rite hook. The surf fishing will continue to improve with good catches of whiting, croakers and a few pompano in the mix. Use live or fresh dead shrimp and for the pompano use a stripe of clam.

he summer months are gone, and we now have November upon us. It’s the time of year cool fronts will start rolling in and small boaters will need to watch the weather forecast. When the conditions allow, you can run offshore and the mahi should be heading south again. This time of year, I have found that you don’t have to go beyond depths of 80-to-100 feet to find mahi. I usually start looking for them when reaching depths of 60 feet. Have ballyhoo (or trolling lures) and chunk bait on hand. Trolling ballyhoo is a known method for finding and catching these fish, but if live baits are available, it is always a good idea to bring some along for when mahi are located. Troll ballyhoo at 5-to-7 knots, naked or with colored skirts to cover more ground when searching. When mahi are located

around floating debris or weed lines, switch to some live bait, if available, or throw out some chunk bait to start a feeding frenzy. If you choose to troll a weed line with live bait, lower your trolling speed to idle speed and try to keep the weed line on one side of your boat to avoid getting your live bait hung up in the weeds. When a hooked mahi gets boat side, leave him in the water to see if a school is around, and if so, they will stay with the hooked one and you can pitch baits to them and catch a few more. On the days that are not good for a long run offshore, just look outside the inlets. Big schools of Spanish mackerel will be arriving (also called Spanish Macks). These fish are fun to target and great on the table. When exiting your inlet, just look for birds diving into schools of fish on the surface. The Spanish mackerels will school around the glass minnows and while they are eating you will see the Spanish mackerels jumping out of the water. Spanish macks will eat shrimp, but the best way to hook up these fish is to troll a small spoon around the schools or cast a small spoon, mylar jig or shiny top water lure into the school. When doing this, troll at about 2-to-3 knots or reel the lure fast. A small Clark Spoon or Drone
Spoon from 1.5-to-2-inches is a good size. A good recommendation when fishing for Spanish mackerel is to use a 1-to-2-inch piece of #3 or #4 wire in front of your lures so the teeth of the mackerel don’t cut off your lure and make it an expensive trip. A good setup for catching these fish would be a light 10-to-15-pound rod and reel matched with up to 12-pound mainline and a 20-pound leader. These are a great fish for kids to have a good time catching. Just remind them that Spanish macks have sharp teeth and depending on the child’s age may need help with removing the hooks.

n November the bottom fishing gets much more predictable. The cold water upwellings are gone and the heat of summer has subsided. This should bring the snapper, grouper, amberjack and others back to the reefs for business as usual. Take a few dozen pinfish out there and enjoy some rod bending action in 70 to 150-foot ranges. A three-way rig works wonders. Remember to let her down slowly to fish the whole water column and prevent getting a twisted mess on the way down. I’ll form a quick three-way rig on mono packed reels by tying on a 40 to 80-pound leader with a Seagar knot. Leave an extra 2-feet of main line (tag end of knot) to tie a loop for attaching a bank sinker. Try 3/0 to 6/0 hooks in the 3x strength. Trolling in November will be on the upswing too. Dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna and sailfish will be taken by those who get out and drag baits
where the water clears up. There will be less fishing pressure this time of year. Out of Sebastian, the edge of the Gulf Stream usually falls at about 180 feet (give or take a couple miles). This is a good area to work over thoroughly. As usual look for sargassum weed and a color change. The best type of sargassum weed is that which forms a clear edge on one side. This gives away the location of a current rip and the fish will feed here. Try adding a small feather, or feather and strip bait to your spread for blackfin tuna. Drop it way back and keep it clean of weeds by checking it frequently. No matter what type of fishing you end up doing offshore, live bait is always a plus. If you are in a fishy looking area offshore and the fish won’t bite your trolled ballyhoo, try drifting a couple livies. Often, there are threadfins (aka greenies) outside Sebastian inlet near the tide line. If near the surface, greenies will create small splashes that look like someone flicked the water with their finger. Deeper schools will show up on the depth finder as large red masses. Cast a sabiki rig into them and twitch the rod. SISA reefs out of Sebastian also hold good bait. Spanish sardines and cigar minnows will hold on the artificial reef. Drop a #6 green glow sabiki rig down with a 4-ounce lead weight. Tip the sabiki with small

pieces of squid tentacles to pick up other baits like pinfish and blue runners when the “good baits” aren’t there. The Bethel Shoal buoy to the south of Sebastian is another good
bait spot. Use the small green sabiki rigs with flourocarbon leaders here. The bait can be finicky at the buoy sometimes. Best of luck out there!

ovember can be a transition month for fishing. Some patterns will be ending, and some new patterns will just be getting started. There will still be signs of mullet and some of the bigger predator fish will still be pounding them along local jetties bridges and seawalls throughout the Indian River Lagoon. This will also be a time where the weather will dictate a lot of your fishing plans. Some years we get cold fronts and some years we don't so your window of opportunity in November will normally be prefrontal conditions or looking for any kind of stable weather pattern with good tidal flow. This should produce a good number of sea trout redfish and flounder along the Indian River Lagoon using live shrimp on a jig head or going with the old faithful

migratory species. Going with a standard pompano rig with fish bites and sand fleas as a preference and always bring an extra spinning rod
with a one-ounce silver spoon or a Gotcha lure one-ounce yellow with chrome or orange and chrome will be my preference for the mackerel, bluefish, jacks, and lady fish. For the pompano, it will be important to look for the higher tides and the other species that will just be around bait schools moving down the coast. Snook fishing will still be hot. Some of the approaching fronts will make for a very good jig bite around some of your deeper bridges. My lure preference of choice will be a 1.5-ounce First Light or T & A snook jig in red and white or chartreuse and blue with 80-pound leader. Also use a much heavier rod when you are fishing for these fish around structure. You must have the right equipment to pull them out or you will be telling the story of the one that got away time and time again. A Different Kind of Fly

orn, raised and having lived in Europe where the Atlantic salmon fishing was a big part of my season, I feel like I should write about a different type of fly in this column. I am talking about a tube fly. If you have never heard about tube flies, let me explain. A tube fly is a metal or plastic tube where the fly is tied on instead of the hook. The size, dimension, color and weight of these tubes can be chosen for the specific needs of your fishing situation. When fishing, you push the leader through the tube (from the head of your fly) and tie to the hook. Then you can pull the hooks eye back into the tube to fix it or let the hook swing free outside the tube. You can also use single, double or triple hooks, but my personal preference for saltwater fishing is a single hook. I can share a few of my

iving on the Treasure Coast in November can be very exciting. Cooler water temperatures mark the return of large migrating fish species to area dive sites and spearfishermen should be ready. Staying prepared to take advantage of calm seas on short notice will allow divers to make trips offshore when the opportunity arises since sea conditions can be challenging this time of year. Even when it’s too rough to clear the inlets safely, savvy divers may still find places to get wet if they pay attention to the tide. Diving is great in our area yearround. Unfortunately, strong winds associated with cold fronts could make area inlets challenging or even treacherous. Divers should keep tanks filled in advance, dive sites selected,
and gear packed so when conditions cooperate on short notice they can take advantage. Many times, weather windows can be short, allowing for a quick morning trip while calm seas allow before the next front arrives. Despite the potential for rough seas in November, the Treasure Coast is in luck. Below the surface, conditions are consistently favorable for diving due to the proximity of local waters to the Gulf Stream. A strong east wind may push this current closer to shore, resulting in good visibility even if seas are rough. Divers maybe surprised to find clear water just inside local inlets on the incoming tide. Places like the south side Boy Scout Island in Stuart or The Cove in Fort Pierce are protected from heavy surf and may be clear at high tide. Snorkeling is great in the mangroves and channel edges, provided divers pay attention to the tides and maintain an appropriate distance from dive flags (100 yards in open water, 100 feet in inland waterways) As fall progresses and temperatures drop offshore, large fish should return to area waters. Spearfishermen will notice the return of large gag and black grouper to area reefs and wrecks when water temperature hits the mid to low 70s. Cooler water may slow fish making

them easier to spear but the same affect has been noticed on divers too. Underprepared divers might consider adding the following equipment for cool-weather diving. Beneath the surface 5mm wetsuits, hooded
vests and neoprene gloves help from becoming cold in the first place. On the surface, basics like dry clothes, a beanie hat and a knee-length dive parka (a “boat-coat”) help block the wind and warm chilled divers.

The largest snook of the year weighed 10.3-pounds and was brought in by Brian Kerr and Ryan Dupis. The largest redfish tipped the scales at 7.89-pounds and the largest trout weighed in at 7.15-pounds, both brought in by Derek Engle and Darren Frost. The heaviest bag of the season was one of the two slams brought in this year. Ryan Jouppi and Luke King won it with a 1.68-pound trout, 6.09-pound redfish and an 8.66-pound snook, totaling 16.43-pounds. The circuit

Anglers competed for cash and points through the season. The top five-point winners automatically get a bye for the first day of the end of season Classic. Ryan Jouppi and Luke King ran away with The Team of the Year award, scoring 39 points were given to the four other teams for the season. Honorable mentions that ground it out during the season to be in the top five, which included: Lorae Simpson and Zach Foltz (33 pts), Darren Frost and Derek Engle (32 pts), Jason Gillespie and Josh Pesce (26 pts) and Lewis Arnold and Jason Bailey (25 pts).

The BCFA was able to award the top two teams with a skiff and a trailer through the generosity of Billfish Boatworks, Meltra Trailers, M & M Marine, T-N-T Boatworks, and Lazy River Skiffs. The 2018 season was also kindly supported by White’s Tackle, D.O.A., MANG, Weedline, Taco Dive, Indian River Vinyl Designs, Snookrd Jigs, Coastal Angler Magazine and ZF Custom Rods. A 14-foot Billfish Boatworks Skiff was awarded to the first-place team,
Darren Frost and Derek Engle, who brought in the only slam of the Classic. They weighed in 1.62-pound trout, a 3.89-pound redfish and a 7.38-pound snook totaling 12.89 pounds. The second-place team, brothers Matt and Joe Canestrari, walked away with a Lazy River Skiff. They weighed in a 5.15-pound trout and a 5.62-pound redfish for a total bag of 10.77. Rochedieu and Richter win TCC September Senior Division Tournament

reasure Coast Casters (TCC) held its second Senior Division inshore tournament of the 2018-2019 season on September 30. Michael Rochedieu took the first-place spot in the Middle School Division and Jeff Richter took first-place in the High School Division. According to tournament co-organizer Cammie Ward, “We had a great day of fishing and snapper was the fish of the day for sure, with five of our anglers limiting out on snapper within an hour of leaving the dock.” Angler Owen Nail reported he caught a lot of fish, but all were just a little short, and Josh and Jeff Richter both declared that if catfish were on the list, they would have won with their catch totaling 25 fish.

Cash prizes, based on minimum participation, will see a first-place prize of $5,000, secondplace payout of $2,500, third-place winnings of $1,500 and a daily prize of $500. Fish Heads of Stuart Tourneys Mark the Launch of 2018-2019

ish Heads of Stuart is ready to kick off the Treasure Coast 2018-2019 sailfish tournament season with two tournaments—the second annual “Quickie” (Nov. 26-28) and the sixth annual Fish Heads of Stuart Sailfish Invitational (Dec. 12-15). Center stage for both tournaments will once again be Sailfish Marina, in Stuart, Florida, the home of Fish Heads. The Quickie is a “shout out” to its predecessor. For years, the Quickie was a tournament crowd favorite and Brent Kane, owner of Fish Heads of Stuart, thought it fitting to keep this event in the forefront of Stuart’s Sailfish tournaments. “Sticking with Stuart’s tradition,
the Quickie is a dead bait/conventional reel tournament, setting the Quickie apart from other tournaments. That said, the Quickie is an angler-friendly format, hook and hand, no problem. This is a fun, easy to fish, two-day tournament,” said Kane. Since its inception, the Fish Heads of Stuart Sailfish Invitational has continued to grow in popularity and participation. The tournament allows live bait and dead bait. Dead baiters will score 300 points per release and live baiters will score 200 points per release. The Sailfish Invitational is a three fish-day tournament and retains its very angler friendly nature. Participants may depart from the
St. Lucie, Ft. Pierce or Jupiter inlets. According to Kane, “Last year, we made the decision to open the tournaments to three inlet departure opportunities. Departure times are earlier and return times are later, giving plenty of time for boats to get out and back without beating up boats and anglers regardless of inlet. Fishing hours remain the same, lines in at 8:30 a.m. and lines out at 3:30 p.m. Tournament prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and thirdplace finishers. GONE COASTAL......... FROM PAGE 3 fish and I got it in the boat. It was another little tunny. Fun to catch, but they are often released or used for bait to entice other species. We were a bit bummed that we hadn’t had more luck, but Billy reminded me that the weather was working against us since the wind was blowing from the west, causing choppy waves. We hit one more spot with no action and decided to call it a day. After a bumpy ride into a sandbar, we decided to take a swim and have a snack. With more than enough to share, I brought out my bananadate-walnut bites. “WHAT! You brought bananas on the boat!” said Billy. I was quickly informed that bananas are considered bad luck on a boat. Apparently, this is either an old fish tale or superstition. Who knew? Not I. A quick survey of a few boaters and anglers at the sandbar confirmed it. They all knew what it meant to have bananas on board a boat. Even the attendant and guests at the fuel dock solidified this story. Billy then told me of a time he wore clothing with a banana on the label during a fishing trip. The label was
promptly cut off prior to leaving the dock. What’s behind the banana ban? Some speculate that: ships had to make fast trips to prevent the fruit from spoiling so there was no time to fish; that bananas float, so if a ship went down they might be the only sign; and, Billy’s favorite, huge spiders often hitched a ride in the banana boxes. I learned a lot on my fishing trip and I will tell you this, I will never bring a banana on a boat again. Thankfully, I was forgiven by Billy and the crew and was allowed to board the boat for the ride home. While we didn’t get completely skunked, I now know our bad luck had nothing to do with the west wind, rough waves or cloudy skies. It wasn’t because of a lack of knowledge, skill or passion for fishing. It was my banana snacks. Heading home for the day, I was left with a newfound respect for a man teaching his children to fish and get outdoors, a renewed hope for the future of fishing and the next generation of conservationists, and a reminder that fishing and a love of the outdoors brings people together. I look forward to many more fishing adventures with this crew… without bananas!

This gave them an opportunity to participate in an event they normally wouldn’t be able to. St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program Update: November 2018 Indian Hills STA Oyster Reef
T
he St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program continues to make progress on the deployment of the Indian Hills (Stormwater Treatment Area [STA]) Oyster Reef. Both the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection permits have been obtained by the County’s consultant, Dredging and Marine Consultants, Engineers and Scientists (DMCES). Funding for this reef was provided by the Indian River Lagoon Council. The reef was designed by DMCES to include up to twelve 15foot by 15-foot oyster reefs parallel to the shoreline at the Indian Hills Stormwater Treatment Area
outfall (located between 2601 and 2609 South Indian River Drive). Volunteers will place five-gallon oyster reef modules in each of the 15-foot by 15-foot square reefs until the reefs reach the intertidal zone (about two modules high). These oyster reefs will be monitored to test ability to provide fish and invertebrate habitat and forage area for shorebirds. Local water quality improvements will also result from oyster growth on the deployed modules. Other organisms associated with the oyster modules (mussels, tunicates, sponges) will also filter water flowing past the oyster reefs. Seagrasses are also known to improve water quality and have been found recruiting waterward of most of the oyster reefs deployed in St. Lucie County. The mechanism

behind enhanced seagrass growth associated with restored oyster reefs has not been studied but may be due to stabilized sediments, which allow seagrasses to take root. Regeneration of seagrasses in the area will be good for water quality and will also create essential fish habitat. Juveniles from several fish species use the Indian River Lagoon prior to emigrating to reefs

be measured periodically, and data will be used to determine if greengrey infrastructure can be used to help increase the resilience of Indian River Drive to the effects of hurricanes and other major storm events. Ecosystems artificial reef modules are being produced locally by the County’s artificial reef contractor, McCulley Marine Services. Deployment of these modules (one module per oyster reef) has also been permitted, making combinations of oyster reef/seagrass/hardbottom fish habitat mosaics possible, subject to funding.

rogress continues on preparation of the 180-foot freighter, Voici Bernadette, for artificial reefing on St. Lucie County’s deepwater artificial reef site. Samples of the ship’s paint, wiring, and gaskets have been tested for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), chemical pollutants found in some ships built prior to 1980. PCB analyses, requested by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, revealed that both types of paint on the ship, as well as rubber gaskets, contained no PCBs. Wiring
contained very small, trace amounts of PCBs but all wiring had been removed in August. The ship has been moved back to the Summerlin Dock for final preparation and fundraising prior to deployment. B
y the time Justin Lucas made it to the stage during the weighin for the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Lake Chatuge, Georgia, the drama was all but gone. Lucas entered the event with an eight-point lead in the AOY season standings—and after solid catches during the event, he had stretched that lead to an almost-insurmountable 47 points. His closest competition in the race, Arizona angler Josh Bertrand, decided not to fish because his wife was expected to deliver their second child. It eliminated all the suspense, but that suited Lucas just fine. The California native turned Alabama resident caught five bass

that weighed only 11 pounds, 14 ounces on the final day at Chatuge. But his three-day weight of 39-0 was more than enough to give him the AOY title. “I wanted this so badly,” Lucas said. “The build-up to this tournament affected every part of my life. I haven’t been sleeping because I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about my game plan for this week. I’ve told my family and friends just to bear with me for a few more days, and everything would be okay—and now it’s all good.” The gravity of the award hit Lucas and moved him to tears on stage. “You think about the guys who’ve won this title—Gerald Swindle, Kevin VanDam—it’s unbelievable,” he said. “I’m the 23rd guy who’s ever won this in the 50-year history of B.A.S.S., and that’s humbling.” Lucas came into the week knowing if he finished inside the Top 8 he couldn’t lose the AOY title—even if Bertrand won the tournament. His Sunday weight helped lift him into seventh place and capped a dominant finish to his 2018 season. The seventh-place showing marked his fifth straight Top 12 appearance in a Bassmaster Elite Series event, dating back to the regular-season tournament held on the Sabine River in Orange, Texas, in June. Lucas earned one of the most coveted trophies in professional bass fishing and a $100,000 bonus. Besides the AOY title, Lucas qualified for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic—his fourth time to qualify for bass fishing’s biggest event in five years on the Elite Series. The Toyota Bassmaster Rookie of the Year award went to North Carolina pro Jake Whitaker, who finished 15th in the tournament and barely edged Arizona angler Roy Hawk for the title.

I
f I had to choose one inshore bait over all others, it would definitely be a shrimp. I can’t name a fish that doesn’t eat shrimp. It’s especially effective for trout, drum, snook and tarpon. Here is a technique for rigging a soft-plastic shrimp with a snelled weed guard that makes it easier to fish through mangroves, marsh grass, docks and all the other thick places that hold fish. Tools: Needle nose pliers, 80lb. fluorocarbon line for the weed guard, 20- to 50-lb. fluoro for the leader, a red or brown Sharpie marker to color the antennae/weed guard, a pre-rigged soft-plastic shrimp.
Steps:
• Carefully remove the hook from the pre-rigged soft plastic shrimp. • Cut a 7-inch piece of 80-lb. fluoro. Pinch it at the center with pliers and bend it backward against the natural curvature of the line to create the antennae. • Push both tag ends of the 80-lb. line through the backside of the hook eye. Leave about 1 ¼ inches of the loop that’s created on the backside of the hook shank. • Thread a strand of the 25- to 50-lb. leader material through the backside of the hook eye. This will be your snell. • Using the leader material on the shank side of the hook eye, make a loop about the diameter of a baseball. • Take this loop and snell it to the shank of the hook, which secures the antennae/weed guard. • Trim the tag end of the leader material as well as the closed loop of 80-lb. line against the
hook shank. • Bend the antennae back along the length of the hook, and trim them just past the barb of the hook. • Use the Sharpie marker to color the antennae. This same weed guard can be snelled onto almost any hook for a variety of applications. Substitute heavy-duty hooks to target species like tarpon and large snook. The 80-lb. fluoro is stiff enough to fend obstacles off the hook point and gives the shrimp a realistic appearance. Fluorocarbon is highly preferred for its stiffness, but some monofilament lines like Triplefish and Ande are stiff enough to use for this
purpose. This might appear to be complicated, but it is a very simple way to kill two birds with one stone. By snelling it, you secure the antennae/weed guard to the hook and create a leader at the same time. Check out the video linked below to see the techniques used in this rig. By CAM Staff ictoria Watts, of Titusville, Fla., had only been fishing a couple years on June 9 when she caught the fish of a lifetime. Her 45.8-pound African pompano is big enough to claim the IGFA women’s 20-pound line class record… if Watts ever gets around to submitting the paperwork. Watts and her former boyfriend Tyler Baruch were drifting live goggle eyes and blue runners over about 300 feet of water out of Boca Raton Inlet. They had been fishing all day without so much as a bite when they decided it was time for one last pass. Well, that last drift did end up being their last of the day, because they needed to get to the docks and weigh a potential record. “When I picked up the rod, Tyler knew right away that I was about to get spooled,” Watts said. “He ran to bring in all the other lines and then fired up the boat to chase it.” After maybe 20 minutes of following the fish and fighting it on a 5000 spinning reel with 20-pound braid, Watts was finally able to gain some ground. She said they thought it was a big sea turtle when they first caught sight of it. When the big African pomp came boatside, it took two gaffs and both anglers to bring it over the rail. “When we finally got it in, we were going crazy,” Watts said. The IGFA All Tackle World Record African pompano weighed 50-pounds, 8-ounces. It was caught out of Daytona Beach by Tom Sargent in 1990. The existing women’s 20-pound line class record is 39-pounds, 5-ounces. That fish was caught by Karen Hogan out of Ft. Pierce, Fla. in 1985.

reedive spearfishing is the most sustainable way to harvest dinner from the sea. There is no by-catch. The challenge of holding your breath and swimming down to a great depth for a chance at a fish is a risk not many are willing to take. Many people fear sharks. Most spearos have a healthy respect and relationship with sharks. The ability to traverse the unknown and the challenges that we encounter are, in fact, what drives us. It’s not all about who can shoot the largest fish or who can go the deepest. Most of the people in the spearing community are actually more conservative than rod and reel fishermen. One of the reasons for this is that we enter the environment on a personal level. We see the species surrounding the rocks and wrecks we explore. We can decide if there is enough of a species at a location by a visual confirmation. Before pulling the trigger, we can determine if it’s a smart move to harvest a fish. We can selectively harvest so that it won’t have an adverse impact on the

ovember and December are great fishing months in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River. The water begins to cool, and with air temperature highs in the low to mid 80s, it’s very comfortable. The mullet run is finishing up, and species that prefer cooler water start to return. Pompano and mackerel start showing up in the ocean and lagoon. Bluefish appear in numbers during the mullet run, although there are always some resident bluefish year-round. Snook fishing continues to be excellent on both live bait and artificials. Fishing was good around the St. Lucie inlet and the river last

population of a particular species at specific location. This is something you cannot do topside in a boat. You might have hooked the last big breeding black grouper at your honey hole without realizing it. Spearos strive to avoid that crucial mistake. As freedivers, we are aware of the importance of management because we see it first-hand every day. There is a perception that spearos have an underwater machine gun and we are just mowing down every fish in our path. That is not the case. We train our eyes and our minds to know what species is what and what size they need to be to be harvested before pulling the trigger. We are very selective. We have only the breath in our lungs to make the decision to shoot or not. This mental ticking timer telling us to breathe makes us really focus on each dive and each shot to make sure it is the right decision. I hope to change the bad publicity associated with spearfishing as a whole. I want to help raise awareness of the importance of conservation one dive at a time. month, with numbers of over-slot snook caught. Local guides and some anglers have been using pigfish (grunts), pinfish, mullet, greenies and other baitfish with great success. The water in the river has cleared up some, and deeper docks with lights, the inlets and bridges continue to be the best spots. Snook will hit a variety of lures. My favorites are D.O.A. 4-inch paddletails on 1/8-ounce jigs. In stronger current, I like Shimano shallow-diving plugs in silver or white. Look for bait and birds. If there’s lots of bait, look for feeding fish, sometimes in schools. Big numbers of small trout are in the Harbor Branch and Vero area. I had several active days with 50 to 70 trout in the Vero area. Most of the trout in that area are small, between 12-16 inches. They are around patches of grass in 2 to 3 feet of water. Larger trout have been showing up in the Bear Point area, sometimes mixed with small trout. Gator trout have been caught from the power lines in Fort Pierce down to the St. Lucie Inlet by guides using live bait. My favorite trout lures are D.O.A. 4-inch pearl/white paddletail on a 1/8-ounce jig and mid-sized gold Zara Spook. I’ve been catching the occasional redfish on the flats around baitfish. I’ve noticed more blue crabs in the lagoon recently, which is a favorite redfish bait. Piers and mangroves are the haunts for redfish, which pull out deeper at low tide. Favorite lures include small gold spoons and gold paddletails on chartreuse jigs. I fish slower for redfish—sometimes dead-sticking a jig and popping it off the bottom. As the water cools, schools of mackerel and pompano will make their way up the lagoon from the inlets. Mackerel have very sharp teeth, so use a wire leader or a heavier fluorocarbon leader. Mackerel like shiny fast-moving lures, as do bluefish. Pompano will hit standard jigs, but I use pompano jigs, too. Many anglers fish off or around the south Stuart Lagoon bridges on the moving tides. Pompano also like shallow flats, and can be found by driving your boat on flats. here is hope on the horizon to alleviate Florida’s water pollution woes. In October, by an overwhelming vote, the U.S. Senate approved major water resources legislation and sent it to President Donald Trump. His signature, which is expected, would clear the way for steps to reduce the massive algal blooms choking Florida’s coasts. Included in a nationwide list of projects authorized by the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) is the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Southern Storage Reservoir. The project would send excess water from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay and the Everglades instead of down the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee river systems. It would provide freshwater to the water-starved Everglades while reducing the discharge events of nutrient-laden output from Okeechobee that pollutes Florida estuaries on both coasts. WRDA also authorizes and funds the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a five-year study to develop technology for large-scale filtration of water to prevent and manage harmful algal blooms. While it might take a few years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to secure federal funding for the reservoir project, a mechanism for funding the state’s portion of the project was approved be the state legislature in 2017. Once federal funding is secured, construction of the reservoir could take a decade or more.

ld Bahama Bay Resort and Marina will host the second annual OBB Wahoo Charity Cup Nov. 15-17 in West End Grand Bahama. This is a charity tournament with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Leukemia & Lymphoma NI. Registration is $1,500 until day before the tournament. Last year’s inaugural tournament had 18 boats participate and raised over $100,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma through 20 percent of all entry fees and silent and live auction items that were donated by sponsors. After two long days of fishing, there will be an awards dinner with live music by country music recording artist Channing Wilson and Junkanoo performance by the locals of West End. Last year’s tournament paid out over $40,000 and winners received beautiful hand-carved wooden wahoo trophies. The 2017 tournament winner was the 48’ Viking Day Sea owned by Robert Desmond with a three fish aggregate weighing 109.6 pounds. Biggest fish of the tournament as well as top lady angler went to Andi DeYoung with a 48-pound wahoo aboard the Day Sea. We are looking forward to a bigger and better tournament this year with goals of exceeding the amount of money raised last year for such a great cause. I
t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

Very young divers can snorkel on the surface and are likely to see fish, turtles, stingrays and more. If you’re an underwater hunter, there’s no better place to find a large variety of delicious fish within easy freediving depths. Hogfish, snapper and grouper, as well as conch and lobster, can be found on the beautiful reef formations. It’s no accident that The Bahamas boasts some of the best spearfishing grounds in the world. It was the first country to establish a Land and Sea Park to protect the reefs. Spearfishing is only allowed while freediving and by use of slings or polespears. No scuba or spearguns are allowed. As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow
water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gathering over a meal and talking about your underwater experience. If you picked up seafood along the way, there are many restaurants on the islands that will be happy to cook your catch. And with the added attraction of a scent trail, FRIGGs are proven on the water to out-catch other lures. “We’ve all had fish follow a lure right to the boat,” Sundstrom said. “You caught that fish’s curiosity through sight and sound, but you haven’t convinced the fish that it’s looking at something to eat.” That’s where the scent system comes into play. For many species, scent is the most important sense utilized in targeting prey. FRIGG
lures use sight, sound and smell to convince even the wariest fish to feed. An empty FRIGG will draw strikes as well as any lure out there, but it’s almost unfair to the fish when injected with a scent product called Fish Smack. Fish Smack was formulated by Bioedge specifically for use with Odin lures. It is a 100 percent natural extract of the oils, enzymes and amino acids from baitfish. It has the viscosity of grease, which makes it uniquely designed for Odin’s “bait chamber.” On retrieve, water pushes through a rubber membrane on the front of the lure and past the Fish Smack in the bait chamber. A
laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. I will never forget the sheer awe of that experience. A visit to Kenai Peninsula would not be complete without a hike to view Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefields. here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-
t a r p on t o grow up to 40 pounds. Anglers make casts to large schools of rolling tarpon over shallow eel grass flats early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders
