W
hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.

The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. E
very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and

extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. he cold fronts have been coming across the Florida peninsula with regularity this season. And that is a good thing when it comes to sailfish action. But the early part of the season, which kicks off right after Thanksgiving each year, also had warm air and strong southeasterly winds in between the fronts. And that was not great for sailfish numbers.

So, when the Fish Heads of Stuart Quickie Sailfish Tournament ran through its two-day affair, the fishing was fair, but probably not what it would be later by late December.
Alikai, led by Capt. Patrick Price and fished by co-owners Geoff Mayfield and Joe Schoppe, both of Stuart, and anglers Marshall Busha, Dave Dalfo, Lach Cheathum, John Clarke Bills and Gunner Askland, won the Quickie with eight sailfish releases. The 16-boat fleet combined to catch and release 53 sailfish. Price steered his anglers to five sailfish on the first day and the daily award, and three the second day. He held off the hard-charging efforts of Floridian with Capt. Glenn Cameron (6 sailfish), the Quickie tournament’s winningest captain, and Champagne Lady with Capt. Josh Chaney (5 sailfish). Price knew the fish would be north on the critical second day and was concerned the old Alikai might not make good time running into a headsea to the fishing grounds. So he departed from Fort Pierce Inlet, planning to troll south if he had to. "We moved south and hopscotched a few spots, and caught two singles," Price said. "Then we picked up our lines and moved further south, and I saw where Glenn (on the Floridian) was fishing and knew he had caught three sailfish. We were two miles north of him and caught another one." In Treasure Coast area tournament sailfishing, teams employ trolling methods and drag dead ballyhoo behind their boats. Price said the "critter" fishing was so good his team went through 270 baits in two days catching dolphin, blackfin tuna, skipjacks, bonito and more. Cameron said his team started south but moved north despite the rough seas. "By 10 a.m. we went through 80 baits on junk," Cameron said. "So I steamed north eight miles right into
the headsea and was lucky enough to set out on top of them." Floridian's anglers — Cameron's wife, Jennifer Cameron; Jimmy Vaughan; Justin Drummond; Matt Driscoll; and Brexton Rigsbee — began reeling in the sailfish bites. "We went from dead last at 11 a.m. to having enough bites to have won it by 1:30 p.m.," Cameron explained. When the day began, Floridian had one fish to its credit and finished with six overall.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, anglers will have more opportunities to catch a Florida Saltwater Fishing Record. Four new species – white grunt, blueline tilefish, schoolmaster snapper and red porgy – will be added to the list of species eligible for a Florida Saltwater Fishing Record. Catches for these newlyadded species must be made on or after Jan. 1, 2019, to qualify for a record. or in federal waters extending directly outward of Florida state waters in conventional tackle and fly-fishing categories. appy New Year! And what better way to ring in 2019 then with sailfish, dolphin, blackfin tuna, wahoo and kingfish? With a warmer than normal December, the winter season is off to a slow start but has definitely shown some promise for good fishing. Flurries of sails, mahi, blackfin and kings have become more regular and now that Christmas is behind us and we’re having more frequent northwest winds, the fishing should really get good this month. January is traditionally when the threadfin hearing and sardines show up along the beaches in big numbers. Most of the time when fishing off the Treasure Coast I
would recommend focusing along the Six-Mile and Eight-Mile reefs and the edge of the Gulf Stream, and although those are places that definitely will hold fish and provide a nice line to migrate down during the winter months, don’t count out the near shore bait schools in January. Occurring a number of years that I’ve lived here over the last 33, the sail fishing has been nothing short of incredible just a few hundred yards off the beach during January. Keep an eye out for frigate birds, free jumpers and even sailfish following up your sabiki rig while you’re catching bait. I recommend R&R sabiki’s because they are made with fluorocarbon and have more hooks on them than the average rig. Since we started to use them, we’ve almost cut our bait catching time in half, so I would definitely look into them if you haven’t already. Also, this is a great time to fish a live bait on a spinning rod while you’re catching bait. he New Year brings lots of fishing opportunities for inshore and near-shore anglers. The snook have moved back up in the St. Lucie River where they spend the winter. Small and medium size snook can be caught casting lures and flies along mangrove shorelines, seawalls, and docks. Cast along the sunny side of the river in
the morning. The larger snook like to sit down low this time of year. Many of them can be found hugging the bridge structures. Position your boat up-current and pitch baits against the up-current side of bridge abutments and fenders. For artificials, we use First Light Jigs, D.O.A. TerrorEyz, BaitBusters, and Giles Jigs. Cast them up current and retrieve along the bottom down with the current. Use a slow bouncing retrieve to keep your lure close to the bottom. Drifting the flats can be lots of fun in the winter. While drifting the flats, using a “drift sock” makes your boat drift perpendicular with the wind. This gives both anglers on the bow and stern a good angle to cast down-wind while also slowing the drift. Topwater plugs can work great on the flats by pausing 3-to-5 seconds between pops. The MirroLure “Popa-Dog” catches
snook, trout, and redfish while drifting the Sailfish flats and Sewall’s Point Flats. Another flats option is a popping cork rig with a live shrimp. We also use 3-inch soft plastic shad tail or jerk baits with ¼-ounce jig heads to allow for a slower retrieve. The mackerel season is at its peak in January for fun with the kids and novice anglers who want to bend a rod. On a calm day, cruise south along the beach. You’ll see big groups of boats where the mackerel are schooled up. But you don’t have to join the crowd. Schools of mackerel can be anywhere down the beach and drawn to your boat by Brothers Giles and Alex chumming with glass minnows. s the pages of the calendar turn to the new year, the offshore playing field east of Stuart will display a new profile in the form of winter-time fish that will settle into their January habitats among the reefs and wrecks just outside of the St. Lucie Inlet. Schools of kings, Spanish mackerel and lane snapper will congregate this month and populate known, preferred reef areas. While most species of fish can be found over a wide area in our local zone, these fish seem to have a predilection to certain spots, like the offshore Peck Lake/ Kingfish Hole, the

friendly weather window, anglers will be able to ply honey holes in depths from 35 to 70 feet of water, where pelagic and resident fish, frequent for feeding and spawning. Live bait should be available in abundance by January, however, anglers should always bring a good selection of dead baits (like Spanish sardines, ballyhoo, and squid) in case live bait is not easily found. Spoons and jigs should always be part of good offshore tackle box, so don`t forget to bring a selection of artificial baits or lures, along with whole dead baits. A good selection of frozen baits and jigs will always compliment a live well full of ammo and give January`s offshore angler endless options as they dial in the desired fish catching strategy. So, in January, watch the weather, find your fish-friendly window and keep your offshore strategy options open, as this will be the month to make your main resolution come true- and that will be to fish more for a happy New Year!

bait when fishing these areas. Don’t forget mangroves for redfish and snook as well. Spanish mackerel will generally come in with the tides and can be found around the inlet areas. Small shiny lures work best on them. Water temperatures can determine where you fish and how your fish. Winds will give
various schools of delicious snappers, and with a little searching you can lock in on them by finding their reef of choice. Look for bottom structures, artificial and natural reefs and cast your line, if no bite, move to the next one. Be prepared for other reef species such as trigger fish and black sea bass to take the bait as well. Try your favorite structures and remember to mark your out GPS with the coordinates of both hits and misses. Spanish and king mackerel will be biting and make for a delicious smoked fish dip appetizer. These darting delights will be seen shooting out of the water left and

he holidays are over and 2019 is upon us already. Winter arrived a little early this year and the cold fronts have cooled the water down quite a bit already. January is traditionally a cold month for the Treasure Coast and the weekly fronts will bring a few days of cooling things down for us to deal with. Wearing layers is essential to cope with the temperature swings that can be as much as 40 degrees or more. Plan your fishing according to the weather forecasts and enjoy the fishing. Lots of species are in the river this month. Pompano, sheepshead,
you another factor to adjust to. As temps drop, move to deeper water areas for your best opportunities for catching fish. Channel edges are particularly productive in winter. Fish the grass flats for redfish and trout as the sun gets higher in the mornings. D.O.A. Deadly Combos are excellent tools for searching out trout and reds. January is typically a windy month and it will continue the tradition if recent weather gives you an insight to the coming month. You might enjoy one or two days a week that is calmer but expect it to be windy most days. Using the right ramps can make your day a little easier in dealing with the weather. There are many ramps around the area that allow you to launch depending on wind direction. The river can be rough some days, but you can still fish most days if you plan your trips carefully. It is a great month to fish despite weather conditions that might not be to your liking. 2018 was an outstanding year for us and I expect this year to be even better! Remember, fishing is not just another hobby, it's an adventure! Have a wonderful 2019!

he inshore fishing should be red hot in January if the weather conditions are good. This is the time of year when the cold fronts start coming south with all the low temps and strong northeast winds causing a lot of headaches for anglers. But it is time for the bluefish, Spanish mackerel, croakers and black drum to show up in full force. These fish will be coming in the mouth of the Fort Pierce Inlet and working their way into the turning basin and both north and south in the river. On the nicer days try some of these tips. Redfish and trout will be
in the deeper holes and channels around places like Harbor Branch and Queen's Cove to the north and to the south try places like Pete Stone Creek or Big Mud Creek. Try working a live shrimp on an ⅛- or a ¼-ounce jig head and fish it very slow if the water is cold. For some fun and maybe a fish dinner try fishing in the Fort Pierce Inlet and the area between the bridges for some nice Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Your best results will probably come from using a Gulf Stream Flash Jig or a small spoon. Just look for the birds and the fish feeding on top. Remember, don't take more than you can eat because these fish don't freeze well and there should be plenty of them around all winter. For bottom fish, like black drum, sheepshead and croakers, use a shrimp or a fiddler crab on a #2 hook and a 15-pound fluorocarbon leader with just enough weight to hold the

ith the winds still blowing hard in January, there are still fish to be caught. The water temperature should have dropped enough to bring in the schools of bluefish from the north. Bluefish will be from the beaches to one or two miles offshore. On days that the weather will allow, you can find bluefish cruising the near shore waters in larger schools. This will allow you to get out and bend some

bottom. Try places like the Drum Hole, Sand Pit or around the bridges. In the surf, the pompano bite should be good for anglers using sand fleas or clams fished on a
pompano rig. Try one kind of bait on each hook to see which one is working better that day. Just a reminder, snook season is closed from December 15 until February 1.
rods. They travel in schools looking for anything that swims to eat. You can catch bluefish on smaller mullet, pilchards and sardines if you are a live bait fisherman. The faster the bait swims the better the chances of hooking these fish. If you like to fish with artificial bait and lures, bluefish will hit anything that is shiny and quickly retrieved. It doesn’t matter if you are using top water or sub-surface lures, they will hit them. Bluefish will also hit a silver spoon with a fast retrieve. Watch for birds diving and schools of jumping bait, which usually means bluefish are in that area. Light tackle setups are great for these fish. I would recommend a 4,000 size reel matched with 10 to 15 pound line. I prefer using 10-pound mainline with 20-pound leader and a small barrel swivel. You will want to put a piece of #3 wire up to your
hook or lures so you don’t get bit off due to the blue’s razor sharp teeth, and attach the wire to the swivel. Once you catch some bluefish, try to catch some live-bait. Many days as the sun comes up, the winds and chop subside and conditions allow for a run further offshore. Look for the sailfish as they will still be in the area. There will possibly be some mahi mixed in with the sailfish. The best bet to get hooked up will be to troll ballyhoo from 90 feet on out towards the warmer Gulf Stream waters and once found, switch over to live bait. If live baits are found and caught they will improve your chances of hooking up with a sailfish or a nice mahi. If you pull a dredge or teaser in front of your baits, this will entice a deeper fish to come to the surface to check out your baits. The offshore bite will be good this time of year when you can get out.

anuary is a fine month to fish out of Sebastian. It’s a time when nice snapper and grouper can be caught along the shallow “beach reefs” to the south. Those reefs along the beach and within a few miles of shore are good alternatives when the wind is westerly and the waters well offshore are no fun. Big gag grouper can move into these shallower areas so try heavier gear and a live bait on the bottom. Also, big sheepshead and triggerfish will be present, so mix it up with some lighter tackle and a #2 hook. In January, the reefs in 60 and 90 feet are excellent fishing. In addition to snapper and grouper we always seem to pick up some nice cobia off the bottom. Remember, when you are grouper fishing and you realize you’ve hooked a cobia, loosen the drag immediately. The hammered down drag of grouper fishing may
result in a lost cobia. The cobia will need to run a bit to prevent broken lines and pulled hooks as you fight him near the boat. This time of year, I am always ready for tripletail. I’ll rig a light spinner with a big weighted floater and 30-pound leader with a 1/0 hook. It is always worth examining the weed patches in that 40-to-70-foot range for trips. If conditions are good, cruise along the weed lines for a bit and look hard for the camouflaged rascals. When you see one, cast over him and wind in until the bait is dangling in his face. Live shrimp is a sure thing, but fresh cut bait, squid or frozen ship will usually get it done. It’s best to keep your distance from the fish. They will get lockjaw when disturbed. Kingfish fishing will continue to be solid this month. Keep a live bait or a frozen sardine freelined while bottom fishing. The kings will need a small wire leader. Target them by slow trolling and drifting over the reefs. Keep a couple baits near the surface and a couple baits at middepth. A simple rig is a two-to-fourounce jig head with a live bait or frozen sardine hooked through the lips. Prepackaged “kingfish rigs” are always a good way to go. Put an egg sinker above the swivel to get your

bait to the proper depth. A sure thing is to find the “kingfish fleet”, which often fishes the Pelican Flats area. Sometimes dozens of commercial guys will bunch up and have their way with the kings. Remember to respect these guys fishing area. There will be plenty of fish around the periphery. Sailfish can be hot this month when the fish move to the north. Look for them in the 180-foot range off Bethel Shoal. Trolling smaller blue/
white Islanders with ballyhoo seems to work well. Keep a naked ballyhoo in the spread too. If you locate the fish, switch to drifting live baits and circle hooks on eight feet of 60-pound Fluoro leader. Remember that regulations require keeping released sailfish in the water while dehooking and getting pictures. Please handle these great fish gently and revive them well boat side before releasing. f you are in to beach fishing, January's fishing forecast is for you. January is all about pompano, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and other species. For the pompano you want to have an 11-foot or 12-foot surf rod. Tsunami Airwave is my preference. Okuma 55 Azores with 30-pound braid for my reel of choice, your standard yellow float with red bead chicken rig, and for bait I like to put a piece of Fishbites and add a sand flea or a salted piece of clam. For the bluefish and mackerel, you can't go wrong with a 3/8-ounce T&A flash minnow in green. INSHORE — Here comes the
winter. Winds and colder temps will keep you wet and cold in the kayak. A good pair of waders is highly recommended to keep you warm this month. Pompano, bluefish, jacks and Spanish mackerel become more of the focus in January. I like to target areas near the inlets like the mouth of the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter and Sailfish Flats in Stuart. The deeper channels and sand flats make them ideal locations for the fish to swim in and out with the tides. Try working the edges of these channels with Goofy jigs, small buck tails and D.O.A. jerk baits.

your days wisely and be sure to have all safety equipment on board. Sailfish prefer smaller baits like smaller goggle eyes and pilchards. Kingfish will still be around, scattered mahi and wahoo could make an appearance in the kayak.
FRESHWATER — Depending on
how cold it gets, the peacock bass should be hungry. Live baits like shiners and shad will be the best bet. Clown knifefish, largemouth and sunshine bass will make their way to deeper water as the temps drop. Try fishing the deeper holes with baits near the bottom for best results. W
ow, what a fantastic year flyfishing the Treasure Coast. We caught fish, I mean really brilliant fish, and created memories that will last a lifetime. Working and playing hard, learning, failing and succeeding is what fishing is about. Living my dream is what keeps me going every single day and I’m very grateful for my life. I am writing this column while sitting on my couch, cup of coffee in hand and thinking about the long, but profitable day of fishing with my guests. My recent Norway guests included nine boys ranging in age from 17 to 21, and their two teachers. If my memory serves me correctly,
when I booked this group several months ago, I was thinking, as I often do, that all men are fly fishermen. Much to my surprise only two are serious fly fishermen. The remainder of the group were anywhere from just a little fishing experience to spinning gear and live bait fishermen. Can you imagine my face when I realized the challenges that lay ahead for me? Hey, life is a challenge and so was this week! However, my guests (even the beginners) caught snook, bonefish, pompano, Spanish mackerel and jacks on fly! They lost monster sharks, jumped a big tarpon both on bait and got all kinds of fish on spin. My head was spinning as well just thinking
about the upcoming days. I loved it. These boys were so excited just to be here, catching all these different fish in pristine water conditions. It is a challenge for me because I’m definitely better with the fly but I gave it my best and hey, I had a great time and enjoyed it as much as they did! Have a great and successful 2019! Capt. St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program Update:
It Takes a Village to Sink a Boat A
preliminary report from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s (FAU) fisheries independent stock assessment of St. Lucie County’s artificial reef has revealed that fish communities on artificial reefs deeper than 40 meters (130 feet) were different than fish communities on artificial reefs shallower than 30 meters (100 feet). Deep reefs were dominated by red snapper whereas shallow reefs were dominated by vermillion snapper. A comparison of vertical longline fishing, Baited Remote Underwater videos (BRUV), and Roving Diver Surveys has revealed fishes (tiger grouper, red grouper, blackfin snapper, sandbar shark, and white shark) not documented by the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program in the last 14 years. The FAU study was the first of its kind on St. Lucie County artificial reefs and shows a complex fish assemblage (61 total species), including 8 species of snapper, 8 species of grouper, plus amberjack, cobia, kingfish, snook, and triggerfish. Previous studies on vessel reefs elsewhere plus monitoring of St. Lucie County artificial reefs in the 100- to 120foot depth range indicate these fish species and more will benefit from sinking the Voici Bernadette in depths near 100 feet.
Thorough cleaning of the interior of the Voici Bernadette reveals multiple connections between the upper and lower decks, wheelhouse, engine room and cargo hold. The complexity of this vessel will offer habitat for many different species of fish, plus recreational opportunities for anglers and multiple connections for divers to explore. Fundraising for this deployment is nearing $30,000 with donations by the Coastal Conservation Association’s Music City Chapter, St. Andrew’s Academy, and HayGar Enterprises. MMPS Environmental has also raised money with its fundraisers, sales of ten memorial plaques, the help

Nail and Forlifer win TCC December Inshore Tournament Treasure Coast Casters (TCC) held its monthly Senior Division Inshore Tournament on December 13, 2018, out of Dockside Marina and Resort in Fort Pierce. Owen Nail took the first-place spot in the Middle School Division and Kendrick Forlifer took first-place in the High School Division. According to co-tournament chair, Cammie Ward, “The ‘catch list’ called for a lot of fish, with flounder being the big-point fish. Our anglers caught fish, but not many that were caught were on the fish list. There were short snapper, reds, and mackerel, but the only legal length fish caught were sheepshead, mangrove snapper, black drum and a croaker.”

Since High School Division anglers Kendrick Forlifer and Andrew Evans both had 45 points, placement was determined by the weight of the fish caught. Forlifer’s biggest fish weighed 1.81-pounds, and Evans’ largest fish weighed 1.33-pounds. Tournament first-place winners Owen Nail and Kendrick Forlifer received American Tackle prize bags and $25 Bass Pro gift cards. The biggest fish of the tournament went to Owen Nail for his 3.5-pound black drum, earning him a trophy and goods donated by American Tackle. “We want to thank our guest speaker, Jason Franqui, who is on the Pro Staff at American Tackle,” said tournament co-chair Capt. Joe Ward. “He demonstrated how to put a JigSkinz on a lure. Afterwards, each one of the Treasure Coast Casters got to make their own lure with this method.” Ward added, “Kendrick Forlifer was the only one to catch something on the lure he made, which earned him a special American Tackle prize.” Treasure Coast Casters offers experiences that educate young anglers on the importance of marine conservation, while maintaining a sustainable and healthy estuary and marine environment. The all-volunteer non-profit offers two fishing tournament divisions, a Junior Division for youth 5-11, and a Senior Division for youth 12-18. There is no cost to join or to fish a tournament. Wrapped Up Takes First at Pirates Cove Sailfish Classic By Ed Killer for CAM
T
he Pirates Cove Resort and Marina Sailfish Classic has enjoyed some of the largest catch totals for Treasure Coast area sailfish tournaments. At least four times in its 35-year history, its fleet has amassed in excess of 300 sailfish and has been within sight of 400 sailfish at least twice.
The crew of Wrapped Up back at the dock celebrate their victory in the Pirates Cove Sailfish Classic.
But the 2018 affair pulled in 20 boats and settled for 92 sailfish releases as the migratory body of sailfish remained out of range, and likely, north of Cape Canaveral at least until later in the 2018-2019 season. And eventual winner Wrapped Up needed to find its final three catches, including a last-minute tournament-winning double-header, within the final hour of fishing time. Capt. Chris Lazarra of West Palm Beach, Brian Kirkpatrick, Ryan Schwarz, Mike Irwin, James Green and James Lagrone fished the charter boat, normally docked at Sailfish Marina in Palm Beach, won the Classic by catching and releasing nine sailfish over its three days. "It feels good to win," said Lazarra. Ford agreed. "We had been battling fish to fish with a couple of other boats today," Ford said. "It was really a down to the wire moment. We had a triple up at the end and caught one. Then, right at the last 15 minutes, I got on a couple more fish, and we ended up catching both of them." Ford said the weekend's fishing was tough. He said he ran the boat seeking sailfish from as far north as offshore of Vero Beach to as far south as Jupiter. "We have an awesome crew, and I couldn't have done it without my mates James Green and James Lagrone and Chris Lazarra," Ford said. Champagne Lady's Capt. Josh Chaney said he began the final day of the Classic off Fort Pierce Inlet. "We hooked a double first thing in the morning and jumped one of those two off, but the conditions were great off Fort Pierce Inlet,"
Chaney said. “Then (Capt.) Wink (Doerzbacher of Showtime!) caught a couple next to me, but then the fleet had a couple of fish off Jupiter and the Cabana had one off Stuart." Champagne Lady consisted of Scott Levin, Wallis Higginbotham, Rob Miller, Dennis Rosen, Brad Wilson and Matt Bagley. Chaney had to decide whether to make a big move and sacrifice critical fishing time in order to find better sailfishing. He decided the risk was worth it. "We ran 17 miles so it took us a little less than an hour," Chaney said. "But right when we pulled up, we hooked a double and had a couple of singles so it put us right up there in the standings." Wrapped Up was nearby, too. And when Champagne Lady caught fish, Ford moved Wrapped Up to get into the same area. "It was a real nail-biter to the end," Chaney said. "We were right there fishing rigger-to-rigger. Then right at the end, we saw he hooked that double. I was glad to be out there." Champagne Lady, which won the Classic in 2016, finished with seven sailfish overall for third place. Cabana led by Capt. Eddie Wheeler also had seven to finish in second place.

BCFA Readies for 2019 Tournament Season
T
he Backcounty Fishing Association (BCFA) was founded in 2015 and its ten-month artificial lure tournament circuit spans from January through October. Two-person teams and solo anglers compete to win cash and gain points in the nine monthly tournaments, with a classic finale in October. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and a live release. Teams must fish a minimum of five tournaments and pay entry fees to at least eight tournaments to be eligible to fish the ending “Classic”, which is a twoday event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season will be given a bye from day one and automatically entered for day two. The remaining eligible teams will compete on an elimination basis the first day, with the top five teams from day one moving on to compete for cash and the grand prize (2018 grand prize was a Billfish 14-foot
boat, motor and trailer combo). The annual BCFA membership fee is $25 for the year, and the entry to each monthly tournament is $60 per team. Tournaments are held the first Saturday of each month, with a captain's meeting the Friday evening prior at Little Jim Bait and Tackle, Fort Pierce. BCFA 2019 board of directors consists of Scott Kuipers, president; Audrey Kuipers, secretary and treasurer; Denver Kesner, weigh master; Cheryl Arnold, social media/publicity; Brandon Miller, sponsorship; Stephanie Compton, sponsorship; and Kyle Englelmann, sponsorship.

Association has become involved by identifying potential benefactors that have donated to fish habitat projects in the past. Local businesses are also becoming involved in fundraising. The first bid for an auctionable item has come in for a brass porthole displayed at Hickman’s/ Elpex. Another porthole is being displayed at The Cake Lady in downtown Fort Pierce to join other displays including those at Hickman’s/Elpex, Fire Equipment Services, the Manatee Observation and Education Center, Suncoast Welding Supplies, and West Marine. Volunteer interest in the deployment of the Voici Bernadette is starting to gain momentum. The Providers of Freedom Veterans Group has offered to help with obtaining concrete ballast to help hold the vessel in place at relatively shallow depths of 100 feet and volunteers from Fire Equipment Services have refurbished the ship’s original fire extinguisher dating back to the Voici Bernadette’s construction in 1964. Local radio
personality Christa Stone rented a tour bus for a local Christmas event and will be educating people on the history of the Voici Bernadette and its future as an artificial reef. Seating on the bus was sold out in its entirety to Florida Power and Light. Local artists have become involved; a metal stabile is being welded by Catherine Duffield using objects salvaged from the Voici Bernadette and prints by photographer Bob Bernier have been laminated to be sold as placemat souvenirs. The educational component of this ship’s deployment has not been lost on the community. Tours of the Voici Bernadette have been taken by the Indian River State College’s Science Club and other groups. he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take� marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. To provide additional opportunities for the public to comment on this proposal, FWC is also holding public workshops on state management of Gulf red snapper. Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
