t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.

When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES

calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”

The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. 2019 LIONFISH

CHALLENGE UPDATE

n mid-August, FWC released an update on its 2019 Lionfish Challenge, and the numbers are pretty impressive. Since the event opened with Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day on May 18, 304 people had registered for the challenge and 127 had submitted harvested lionfish (113 recreational, 14 commercial). A total of 15,367 lionfish had been removed from Florida waters. The Lionfish Challenge rewards lionfish harvesters with prizes for their lionfish removals. This year, participants who submit the largest and smallest lionfish may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 in cash prizes thanks to support from sponsors: American Sportfishing Association, Yamaha Motor Company, Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County and National Marine Manufacturers Association. All qualified participants (submission of 25 lionfish or 25 pounds for commercial) will be entered in drawings. In May, Brian Hammett, of Ocala, caught and released a 15-pound, 13-ounce monster from Orange Lake that is the second heaviest fish ever documented in FWC’s TrophyCatch program. Then, on July 27, Chad Dorland caught a 13-pound, 5-ounce largemouth that also garnered Hall of Fame status in the state’s big-bass program. Those two fish are highlights of a great season on the lake. TrophyCatch-approved bass must weigh heavier than 8 pounds and be documented by photo or video of the entire fish and its weight on a scale before being released. Nine other Orange Lake largemouths have been approved by TrophyCatch since Hammett caught his fish, and there’s no telling how many undocumented lunkers have been caught. To date during Season 7, 21 TrophyCatch bass weighing at least 8 pounds caught and released in Orange Lake have been approved in the program, including eight bass weighing more than 10 pounds. Dorland’s 13-pounder was caught during a University of Florida fishing tournament. The open tournament hosted 23 teams and four fish were caught that weighed over 8 pounds. Dorland and his teammate, Dusty McDevit, took fourth place overall in the tournament with a 21.26-pound bag. “That day, it was all either little fish or absolute monsters being caught,” said Dorland. “I was flipping hydrilla with artificial bait and was thrilled to catch my personal best during the tournament. “The fishing on Orange Lake is better than it has ever been before,” Dorland continued. “People are catching big fish all over the lake, not just in one specific spot, and that’s because of the success of FWC’s lake management.” Management activities are discussed at public meetings twice a year and have included vegetation shredding, tussock harvesting and invasive plant control. Walker's Cay National Park

alker’s Cay National Park is one of six parks in the Abaco Park System. It was established in 2002 and is just a 15-minute boat ride from Grand Cay, Abaco. It is the northern-most park in the Bahamian National Park system. In 1995, a proposal for creation of a protected area at Walker’s Cay was submitted by the Walker’s Cay Hotel and Marina to Bahamas National Trust. This proposal was supported by many residents and stakeholders from Grand Cay, including fishermen and the local Board of Works. The goal was to protect the reefs near Walker’s Cay, as stakeholders recognized the importance of these reefs to the economic viability of the dive and fishing industries on Walker’s, Little Grand and Grand cays. In 2002, after several consultations with local communities, the park lease was signed to protect 5,800 acres of coral formations and the surrounding marine environment. The Walker’s Cay area is a popular snorkeling and dive spot, particularly used for shark diving and frequented by island visitors. Additionally, the area serves as a site for game fishing and traditional reef and flats fishing. Walker’s Cay is fringed by its own barrier reef. new boat ramp is in the works for Headwaters Lake at Fellsmere Water Management Area (FWMA) in western Indian River County. The St. Johns River Water Management District recently awarded a construction contract for the ramp and other visitor amenities. This comes following the award of a 50-percent funding match for the $842,000 project from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “The Headwaters Lake boat ramp will be the final piece that elevates this area to a premiere recreation destination for the entire region,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board Member Doug Bournique. “FWC has been a tremendous partner in helping make this possible for the benefit of our residents and visitors for years to come.” The project includes construction of an improved parking area, restrooms and a floating dock along with the boat ramp. The Fellsmere Water Management Area and its multi-function reservoirs serve water supply and flood control purposes and help improve the water quality of agricultural and surface water drainage. Additionally, the area offers opportunities for public recreation. Already kayakers are taking advantage of the north reservoir, and because of FWC’s habitat improvement work, the FWMA is quickly becoming an attractive destination for anglers.

Stuart Sailfish Club Announces 34th Annual Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament

adies, get your pink on and get ready to fish to fight breast cancer! Stuart Sailfish Club will host the 34th annual Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament to benefit Friends in Pink. The event will take place Sept. 20-21, with weighin at Pirate’s Cove Marina and the Awards Dinner at the Stuart Sailfish Club’s tiki hut. Festivities include a rock-n-roll themed costume contest, silent and live auctions, and a lively awards dinner. “This is a really fun tournament and we’re excited to host it again this year,” said Amy MacKenzie, cochair of the tournament. “It’s also a very important tournament because it helps those in our community who are fighting breast cancer and are uninsured or underinsured. Over the past few years, we have donated more than $37,000 to these types of organizations. Our goal is to bring that total to $50,000 this year. We hope the pubic, whether fishing or not, will come out and support the cause.” Friday evening, the night before the tournament, will be a kick-off party with heavy hors d’ouevres, entertainment, silent auctions, and the costume contest. Final registration is at 4:30 p.m., the

captain’s meeting is at 7:00 p.m., followed by the costume party and other festivities. The tournament itself will begin Saturday morning with a shot gun start at 7:00 a.m. at the red St. Lucie Inlet sea buoy. Eligible fish in the tournament are sailfish, dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, grouper and snapper. The weigh station opens at 2:00 p.m. Lines must be in no later than 3:00 p.m. and all boats must be checked in with the committee boat by 4:00 p.m. Weigh in will close at 4:30 p.m. The awards dinner will follow at 6:00 p.m., including live and silent auctions, music and dancing at the Stuart Sailfish Club’s tiki hut located at 3867 SE Evans Terrace, Stuart, FL. Cost to fish the tournament is $295 per boat and includes up to 4 anglers and 4 dinner tickets per night (price goes up to $325 after Sept. 10). Additional anglers can fish for $100 each. The Safari 1 Charter boat will also be available to anglers for $100 per angler which

Giles Murphy. designated as a species of special concern in Florida. Among other causes, good management and conservation measures have led to removal of this designation. The common snook will be the focus for the rest of this list. • Snook are also known as robalo, linesiders, and sergeant fish. In the past, they were known as "soapfish" when some sections of the "soapy" tasting skin were left on the fillets due to poor cleaning practices. • Snook can tolerate a wide range of salinity and may be found in fresh water. However, they are extremely sensitive to temperature and a strong, fast moving cold front through an area containing snook may claim many lives due to the rapid drop in water temperature. • Long term tagging research has been carried out over the past several years and has proven to be a valuable tool in helping to understand the life history of snook. • Snook are protandric hermaphrodites and change sex from male to female. The actual cause of the change is not known, but current research may provide an answer. • Snook are known as "ambush feeders" meaning that they'll surprise attack their prey as it swims or moves into range. This occurs especially at the mouths of inlets where currents play a role while the snook waits in hiding behind bridge pilings, rocks, or other submerged structures. • Besides preying on small fish, snook also feed on shrimp, crabs, and mollusks. • Snook are very popular with recreational anglers due to their strong fighting spirit and mild, delicate flavor.

What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. he fishing days of September will be a collection of earthly offshore events, which will trigger weather transitions and shape this month’s near coastal ocean. September’s offshore playing field east of Stuart, has the potential to be affected by the dynamics of what is usually the peak of hurricane season, and changes in the physical tilt of the Earth in relation to the sun (the fall equinox). These events and other variables will put both fish and the ocean, in motion. Baitfish will begin to arrive in the near coastal zone this month, as cooler water temperatures to the north will activate their southbound migration. Large schools of mullet

will magically appear like clockwork during this period and tow with them a wide variety of pelagic predators, like Spanish and king mackerel and cobia, just to name a few. Vermilion snapper will be a top target species this month and will continue to gather in large schools during the final phase of their spawning period. Also known as beeliners, these tasty members of the snapper family of fish, will best be found around high-profile reef structures in 80-to-180 feet east of the St. Lucie Inlet. Beeliners tend

to suspend or hover 10-to-20 feet above the reef, so it’s important to present one’s bait-up and off the bottom with a dozen turns of the reel or so. Multiple hook “chicken rigs” help to enhance deployment of the baits above the reef structure in this manner. All types of cut-bait will provide a high rate of capture success when dialing in vermilion snapper. Other snapper such as mutton, mangrove (gray), and yellowtail snapper can be found right alongside each other on the very same structures as the Vermilion. Anglers will be

able to deploy a variety of different strategies during any one outing on a particular reef site and have the opportunity to catch a diverse collection of snapper. Many flavors of reef visiting fish will inhabit the reef system offshore of Martin County this month, including grouper, cobia, amberjacks, triggerfish, sea bass, and porgies. With this in mind, anglers should have a well-stocked tackle box and a versatile assortment of rods and reels to increase the chances for successfully collecting “salty groceries.”

he silver-side minnows and mullet are schooled up on the beaches with endless snook and tarpon, and jacks feeding on them. We mostly throw artificials when walking the beaches such as MirrOlure Minnows, Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows, D.O.A. Baitbusters and jigs. For flies we throw Puglisi Ghost Minnows, Gummi Minnows, and Clousers. The key is finding the schools of bait on the beaches. When cruising the beaches by boat or on land, look for

ust because the temperature is cooling off in September doesn’t mean the fishing is. Gulf Stream waters will stop increasing in temperature this month and hopefully even retreat back down to the high 80s. This will stop any more fish from migrating north and encourage the fish that did, to come back home. September’s light winds and calm seas remain favorable for family trips and easy cruising, so

diving birds and surface action. Once the sun is up, the bait schools will look like big dark spots 10-to-50 feet wide pushed up against the shoreline. Earlier the better to find the tarpon feeding on the bait schools. For tarpon, it can often help to use bait or lures that stand out more among the thousands of mullet. We’ve hooked them using fresh dead mullet and dead ladyfish on the bottom near the outside edge of the bait schools. For lures that stand out, try topwater plugs or injured twitch baits such as Rapala X-Raps. For fly fishing, I prefer using an intermediate fly line that gets my line under the bait and avoids getting caught in the breaking waves and dragged to shore. The mullet run brings lots of other opportunities than only fishing the beaches. Tarpon are feeding big back in the St. Lucie River in the North and South Forks mostly between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. In the North Fork, we cruise both sides of the river looking for rolling tarpon. In the South Fork, they can be found in Round Bay or

The snapper bite will be good as long as the water on the bottom does not get cold due to a thermocline, which you will mark on your depth finder as a line about 10-to-35 foot off of the bottom. Dolphin, kingfish, and cobia will all be found in 65-to-80 foot of water as well if you want to venture out a few miles. If you are a beach fisherman, the tarpon and snook will be roaming the shallows in the morning and afternoons from Pepper Park in Fort Pierce to the power plant beaches to the south. Kingfish are very toothy fish so you will want to have your baits rigged with a wire leader and a “stinger rig.” For a stinger rig, you will attach your main hook in the nose of your live bait with another short piece of wire from the main hook to a treble hook in the mid-section or near the tail of your bait. Kingfish hardly ever eat the whole bait on the first strike so two hooks on the bait will increase your chances for a hookup. This being said, a light drag is essential because a lot of times a kingfish will get foul hooked and a light drag with steady pressure will keep from pulling the hook out. Once you catch some bait, hook a bait or two up and slow troll the live bait around the edges of the bait schools. As the day goes on, most of the kingfish will move to deeper waters. Anywhere out to 80 feet will be a good area to find kingfish. Look for kingfish around structure and ledges. When heading out to the

deeper depths, try to have a variety of live baits such as pilchards, greenies and big blue runners to put in your trolling spread. If you are running out of live bait, don’t have live bait or would prefer a faster trolling speed, kingfish will hit shiny spoons like the drone spoon and big lipped lures. I would still recommend using a wire leader on lures. As with any lure or live bait trolling for kingfish, cover the water column from the surface to

eptember has arrived and the bigger kingfish will be arriving on their journey to the south. Kingfish are a great fish to target for some good rod bending action and blistering runs. These fish will be found from just off the beach around the bait schools to the 80-to-90-foot depths in our Treasure Coast waters. In the morning, look for bait schools of pilchards and greenies off the beach. For the first couple of hours in the morning, kingfish, big and small, lurk around these

Snook are back in season as of September 1 and can be caught from the beaches to the backwaters. Atlantic zone rules apply, with one snook overall length between 28 and 32 inches allowed per angler per day. While snook take center stage in the Sebastian area in September, they are not the only gamefish in town. I’ll break down each fishy aspect of the Sebastian area and discuss what to expect in the late summer/early fall season.

eptember holds a lot of opportunities for Sebastian offshore anglers. In past years, the cobia fishing has been great. Cobia will hang out around the reefs in 40to-90 feet of water. If you’re lucky enough to find out where the giant bull sharks are congregating, you’ll find the cobia. If you see big fish on your sonar, jig the water column at the proper depth. Work the jig as hard and as fast as possible. A live greenie dropped down to depth is a sure thing, but you’ll need to sort through the sharks. The cobia can become thick in close this month when the cold-water upwelling is strong. They’ll be near the surface around the bait pods and weed lines. Bottom fishing can be challenging this time of year. Mangrove and mutton snapper will be caught by anglers who downsize their tackle. eptember's fishing forecast means that snook season is open. On Florida’s east coast, you are allowed one fish per angler with a pinched tail the fish has to measure 28 inches to 32 inches to keep. You will find these fish around beaches, jetties and bridges as they will slowly be making their way into the river as the fall mullet migration starts. So, this means anything that looks like a mullet will get pounded by a lot of different predators. Big schools of tarpon, sharks and jack's will be showing up as more and more mullet come down the coast. Using artificial lures, such as a D.O.A. Bait Buster in the black and silver color or try using the six-inch Bass Assassin Sea Shad in the black shad color with a T&A half-ounce

throw a D.O.A. shrimp, and if there is a chop on the water, make sure you are throwing a darker colored Bass Assassin four-inch sea shad with a quarter-ounce jig head. If you see a lot of commotion, throw all of that out the window and only throw a big surface plug, like a Heddon Super Spook. The recipe that I promised last month for snook is very simple. Cook down one onion and one tomato, half of a garlic clove and some salt and pepper. After that is done, turn on your oven to 375°. Put a very little bit of your favorite fruit juice in the bottom of a dish. I like using mango and orange. Put a little bit of garlic salt on the fish and place the cooked onion tomato mixture over top of Austin Copestick with his your fish. Place in the oven and cook first tarpon. hat else would I write about at this time of the year? Nothing! My heart is pounding from excitement and all I can think about is when can I go back to the beach and hopefully get another shot at these magical creatures, tarpon. If you want to experience one of the purest moments in fly-fishing here is my advice: 1. Walk the beaches along the Treasure Coast and look for them close to the beach rolling or feeding. 2. Look for birds or/and find schools of minnows or mullets and look for tarpon busting bait. You can’t miss them with their big and silver shining scales. 3. The best times are early mornings and evenings with lower light conditions. High tide is the best preference but don’t rule out the rest of the day. 4. Cast your fly to the fish or where the action is happening.

Depending on the type of line I fish, I sometimes wait a few seconds and then strip very slow with longer strips. 5. Don’t bring your butter knife to this gun fight! Stick with your 12-weight tarpon set and make sure that all the lines (backing, fly line, leader) are up to date and strong! My most successful fly is a black and purple on an Owner Aki #5/0 hook. 6. When the fish takes your fly, it is usually brutal with total commitment. Try still to strip set hard for good hook setting. Use as much force as you can with small rod angles toward to the fish and super strong drag set. Drag these fish towards you - this means that you physically walk back up the beach and reel line in while you walk back down to the waterline. If you can’t stop a fish swimming straight out, try to run along the beach to increase pressure from the side. There

Great visibility has allowed a few opportunities that are harder to come by later in the year. Night diving for lobster in the St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park, also known as Peck Lake, has been productive with many spiny and Spanish/spotted lobster being caught. All lobster are nocturnal but Spanish lobsters are much easier to catch after dark when they venture further from deep crevasses and overhanging ledges. When targeting

Stuart Sailfish Club Hosts Successful 41st Annual Jr. Angler Tournament M

ore than 40 kids participated in the recent Stuart Sailfish Club 41st annual Jr. Angler Tournament, all angling for those coveted awardwinning fish. Awards were given for the heaviest fish, first through third place, in many categories. Originally scheduled for Aug. 2-3, inclement weather caused the tournament to be rescheduled. Children from the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches in Live Oak and Bartow, as well as local groups of disadvantaged kids, were invited to participate. Due to scheduling conflicts, these children were not able to attend this tournament but will participate in an identical event on September 7, complete with prizes, a barbeque lunch and awards. “The kids had a wonderful time and we’re truly

St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program:

CCA – Curtis Bostick Reef Fast Becoming a Fish Magnet! T

he CCA – Curtis Bostick Reef (a.k.a. ex-Voici Bernadette) was deployed on June 23, 2019. As the fish assemblage on this reef continues to develop, anglers with information on catches are encouraged to take photos and report catches, especially if the fish are small and have to be released. The St. Lucie Artificial Reef Program has used such photos and reports to garner more than $800,000 in grant funding over the last 14 years. Dive assessments from charters with Stuart Scuba and Scuba Diving International show that the reef is already home to small amberjack (Seriola dumerili), gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus), and schools of baitfish. The baitfish, likely round scad (Decapterus punctatus) or Spanish sardines (Sardinella aurita) are best seen in an excellent underwater video produced by Scuba Diving International: https://bit.ly/2KAzSKG. Assessment of the development of the CCA Curtis Bostick Reef will be further augmented by Saltwater Interactive and MMPS Environmental who have partnered with Peak Technology Group and Prestige Satellite Communications, Inc. to develop a data acquisition and transmission system that will help researchers track development of the CCA - Curtis Bostick Reef (http://www. GRADOceanographic.com). Especially important will be the documentation of development of fish assemblages and water quality measurements on the reef. The St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program is looking for another vessel to deploy after this summer’s FWC-funded 1,500-ton concrete deployment. McCulley Marine Services has already identified two additional vessels for potential reefing; the first of these vessels is a 230-

foot freighter while the second vessel is a 100-foot tugboat. Once these vessels become available, the Program must find a way to replace the two docks used in preparing the Voici Bernadette. Operation of the Port of Fort Pierce has been assumed by Derecktor Shipyards in Fort Pierce (already a supporter of the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program) and the Program must repair damage sustained to the Summerlin dock by the Voici Bernadette. Future cooperation with both fishing and diving interests is needed to maintain the ecological and economic integrity of the CCA Curtis Bostick Reef, as well as other reefs offshore

A visitor to this reef already has published a spearfishing video (https://youtu. be/nlVlmQBtekY) of harvest of small, albeit legal sized gray snapper in the cargo hold of the Voici Bernadette. Although this video was well done, it ignored the intent of the concrete in the cargo hold. The concrete was supposed to protect smaller fish from the larger predators. This juvenile habitat will be important in removing a bottleneck to recruitment of smaller fish to the reef. As the larger fish on the superstructure are harvested, they can be replaced by smaller fish that have recruited from the concrete. These smaller fish then will grow to harvestable size. In the process of growing these fish will reach sexual maturity and will be able to spawn, replenishing our waters for future generations. Additional concrete, including the 30-foot high Reef Dart modules, designed and constructed by the Palm Beach Fishing Club will be deployed surrounding the CCA – Curtis Bostick Reef. This combination will also provide habitat for smaller cryptic species, increasing fish diversity, and also provide additional baitfish habitat which will help stabilize the reef ecologically. On August 3, fundraising to replenish Artificial Reef Program reserves continued. The community came together for a Bon Voyage Benefit at the Rusty Putter restaurant at the County’s Fairwinds Golf Course to raise more than $25,000. Father-Daughter Team Taylir and Troy Wilson Take First in BCFA August Tournament Backcountry T

wenty-six boats headed out the morning of August 3 to fish the Backcountry Fishing Association’s eighth tournament of the 2019 season. The morning started out mostly cloudy, the high was 89°F, with winds south-southwest at 10 to 15 mph. A total of 20 trout and 15 redfish were brought to the scale. Father and daughter team Taylir and Troy Wilson brought to the scale a 2.25-pound trout and a 6.29-pound redfish, and their total weight of 8.54-pounds put the team in first place winning $487.50. They also won the redfish Calcutta, which earned them an additional $210. Joe and Matt Canestrari grinded it out and took second place with a 2.95-pound trout and 5.28-pound redfish, for a total weight of 8.23-pounds, earning the duo $292.50. Chelsea Hampson and Andy

Fantini took third with a 3.73-pound trout and a 4.02-pound redfish, earning $195.00. Lora Peters earned herself a $25 gift card to the Taco Dive in downtown Fort Pierce for being the lady angler weighing in the heaviest fish, a 2.31-pound trout. Jason and Ashley Gillespie brought to the scale a 3.08-pound trout earning the couple $200 for the trout Calcutta. The Backcountry Fishing Association tournament is a ninemonth circuit which runs from January through September, with a two-day Classic in October. The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers

the opportunity to win cash and gain points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. Teams must participate in at least five tournaments to be eligible to fish the Classic which is a two-day event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season are given a bye from day one. The remaining eligible teams compete on an elimination basis the first day, where only the top five teams of day one progress to day two to compete against the season point leaders for the grand prize and cash for the top four teams. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournament each month, the fee is $60 per team.

Tons of Trash Scored at the 12th Annual

Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup

ons of trash, 5.1 tons to be exact, were removed from the waterways and shorelines of the Treasure Coast on July 27 during the 12th annual Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup, reports the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC). This year 1,050 volunteers came out to collect trash on the sultry July morning. The volunteers targeted 125 miles of waterways and approximately 15 miles of ocean front to collect trash.

“Since 2008, we have engaged more than 10,650 volunteers, who together have removed more than 87.2 tons of trash from the waterways of Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties,” said event coordinator April Price. “We have an amazing group of business leaders and volunteers whose duties range from acquiring sponsorships, recruiting volunteers, running our check in sites (we had 30 locations this year). Our participants range from 18 months to

90-plus years of age and come from all segments of our community.” Although 5.1 tons of trash is way too much, this year there was a slight increase in the number of volunteers and a decreased amount of trash from 2018, when 5.11 tons was collected. “Our data is trending in the right direction,” says Price. “In the first four years we averaged 10.5 tons of trash collected by 700 volunteers. The following four years we averaged 8.6 tons of trash with 900 volunteers. Over the past four years we averaged only 5.2 tons with 1,000 volunteers. Our collection data also indicates a decrease in marine usage when we are dealing with poor water quality conditions. Other community efforts regarding litter education reflect in our numbers too. For instance, we

saw a significant decrease in straws and cigarette butts for the first time this year. Both forms of debris have received a lot of media attention over the last 12 months. Many of our trashy treasures are expected like bottles, cans and fishing line, but we find some crazy stuff too. This year we found items representing every major holiday, including an Easter egg with a $1 bill, a floating dock, boat decks, a duck decoy, meter box, balls from every major sport, hub caps and a machete.” Next year’s event is slated for Saturday, July 25, 2020. This 80-pound, 68-inch long wahoo was caught by Bob Sonnenberg on Starycat with Capt. Rick Pino north of Sebastian Inlet. Caught in 100 feet of water while fishing on the bottom for snapper, fellow angler Brian Combs helped pull the beast into the boat. The research was painstaking, and the researchers gratefully recognize fishermen’s help. Most recently, researcher Steve Poland, who represents the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Division at the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC), spent three years working with charter fishermen, commercial fishermen and tournament directors sampling stomach contents to identify preferred prey. In 2010, a North Carolina State University team, led by Dr. Paul Rudershausen, published findings after 10 years of sampling from the week-long Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. Both studies came to similar conclusions—bullet and frigate mackerel are far too important to be left unmanaged. Bullet mackerel occur from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. Frigate mackerel mostly occur from North Carolina through Florida. Though a few years back the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council placed protections on a number of forage fish species, bullet and frigate mackerel remained unmanaged, and are vulnerable to industrial fishing as crab/lobster bait, animal food and for human consumption. There are no seasons or limits on either species. That’s concerning, since demand for forage fish is increasing. Fortunately, there’s a provision in the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act (MSA) and associated National Standards that allows protections for forage fish as “ecosystem component species,” if there’s a clear trophic (foodweb) connection to a managed predator. When the researchers made the connection between wahoo and the small mackerels, they provided the SAFMC with justification to manage those two species as “ecosystem components” of the Dolphin/Wahoo Fishery Management plan. In June, the SAFMC voted to develop an amendment that may include protective regulatory actions. Fishermen of all stripes publicly supported the decision, and it’s important we stay engaged in the process. Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag

or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
