Finding The Touch MARK SOSIN
T
oo many anglers blame what they consider the obvious when they are not catching fish. They reason that the fish aren’t hungry, they’re not fishing in the right spot, or the lure they have chosen is not producing the results they expected. Sometimes, it merely takes a subtle touch to turn frustration into success. Although my father fished around the bend many years ago, I still marvel at his skill working a yellow Upperman bucktail in the ¼- or 3/8-ounce size. To this day, I have never met an angler who could come close to matching his success with that single lure. He caught countless species on that bucktail, from striped bass, bluefish and weakfish, to redfish, trout, bonefish, permit and tarpon. Even when I stood next to him and tried to match his every move, I fell far short. What that taught me is that some simple thing in the retrieve (or lack of one) can make a major difference. Let me share a few examples with you. Two of us fishing side-by-side were casting MirrOlures. They were the same model and the same color. He would get strike after strike, while I could barely get a fish to hit my lure. No matter how closely I watched him, I couldn’t detect any difference in the area we fished and the speed of the retrieve. I had to threaten to physically harm him if he didn’t tell me what he was doing. The only difference was that he occasionally vibrated his wrist on the hand
holding the rod. That caused the lure to flash just like a baitfish, and a predator reacted to that instantly. In another example, my friend and I were both fishing a swimming plug with a lip. During the retrieve, it would dive down, but if you stopped reeling the lure would start to float back to the surface. Once again, my partner got strike after strike, and I could barely catch an occasional fish. All he was doing was swimming the plug for a short distance, pausing for an instant, and then continuing the retrieve. Every time he paused, the plug would start to rise in the water column and then dive again when he resumed reeling. The sudden dive made it appear the lure was trying to escape from a predator. That’s all it took. Here’s one more example. The successful angler would start with a rather slow retrieve and then speed it up about halfway back to the boat. If a fish happened to see the plug, the change in speed would make it appear as if the plug were trying to get away and that’s a trigger mechanism. Seasoned anglers who fish artificials and score frequently limit the number of lures they carry and develop a touch for each one that produces strikes. Basically, there is more than one way to fish any artificial. My suggestion is that you keep trying a variety of subtle approaches until you become the angler that others envy and try to copy.

Fly Reel Backing
L
osing a big saltwater gamefish after it is hooked and decides to head for the horizon is, in many instances, the result of filling your reel with backing that is either too short or too light. It can ruin an otherwise wonderful trip. Also, making wrong choice in backing can lose you not only your fish, but worse, it can cost you a very expensive fly line. Twenty-pound backing is a good choice for most inshore saltwater fly fishing situations, and 30-pound backing will more than fill the bill in getting you through a tussle with an uncooperative bluewater gamefish. The Old School Frame Of Mind: Dacron These days there are many choices when it comes to choosing backing for your fly reels. Some anglers prefer braided backing because of its small diameter. I prefer the tested and trued performance of standard hi-vis Dacron. Why? Because, It’s easier on the fingers while fighting big fish, and it does not have the tendency—as braid does—to dig into itself when reeled back onto the fly reel. How Much Do You Need? Your fly reel should house a minimum of 175 yards of 20-pound Dacron backing. Many inshore saltwater gamefish will make initial runs of from 75 to 100 yards before they turn and settle into a fighting mode. For bluewater fly fishing, 30-pound Dacron or gel spun is standard. A minimum of 300 yards should fill these reels. Big bluewater gamefish like the tuna and marlin will run off 200
yards of backing before you’ve had time to say, “Come back and fight like a man!” These fish can also dive to great depths, thus making essential an abundant supply of backing. One caveat to remember is “Don’t short-line your backing.” Best Color For Backing? The phrase “getting into your backing” always arouses excitement through a saltwater fly fisherman’s being each time he hears it. There is nothing more exciting than witnessing one hundred yards of water-shedding backing slicing through the water, pulled by a bonefish, tarpon, sailfish or marlin. It’s a common occurrence in saltwater fly fishing. When this happens, the color of your backing is essential in tracking the fish’s direction. Is it swimming at an angle or is it sounding. Make no mistake, eventually every saltwater fisherman experiences this. High-visibility backing will help determine how to fight the fish. For instance, when tarpon fishing it is important that you are able to turn a tarpon’s head during the tussle, a move aimed at keeping the tarpon off balance and assuring the fish is brought quickly to the boat. Also, the use of hivis backing allows the angler a better sight-line in tracking the fish’s direction so pressure may be applied in an opposite direction. The best colors? As I stated above, I prefer hi-vis backing in bright yellow or bright orange, both highly visible backing regardless of weather conditions or water coloration.

eam Beach Marine Products is riding a high headed into the second leg of the Meat Mayhem Tournament series at Palm Beach March 8-10. Rod man Teddy Beach used one word to describe their $10,000 win at the January Key West Kingfish Mayhem: “Monumental.” In rough conditions, the team weighed in a 65.2-pound kingfish on day two to win the first event of the three-leg series. But things weren’t so rosy on day one. With a 6:30 a.m. Bimini start, the team headed west out of Key West Harbour Marina aboard their 39’ SeaHunter “Prowess” toward the Dry Tortugas. Passing Marquesas Key, there were 8- to 10-foot swells. Beach said they were glad to have their Seakeeper stabilizer when it came time to set out the spread. “When we got to the fort, in 120 feet of water, the waves were stacking up past 10 feet,” he said. “Fishing conditions were tough. Water clarity was junk; it was just milky.” Team Beach Marine fought all day to find clean water. They lost four fish on the first day of the tournament and did not land a single king mackerel. The team, captained by Billy Delph, decided to make a move on day two. They left the docks that morning in 35 mph winds with 10- to 12-
foot seas. They headed west where they had located a temperature break in 95 feet of water. “We knew the area we were targeting,” Beach said. “And we knew it would pay off when the water clarity was good and the temperature was right at 78 degrees.” Several days prior, they began catching blue runners and penned them in two 300-gallon Beach Marine Pro Pens with false bottoms. So, they were fishing good, fresh and healthy bait as they slow trolled the break. The results were impressive. Along with two sailfish, they caught 15 kingfish. The smallest weighed 28 pounds, and they had four heavier than 40 pounds. Their back-up fish weighed well over 50 pounds, but the largest of the day was a 65.2-pound king mackerel. “When Daniel Delph stuck that fish, the mood on the boat was monumental,” said Beach. “We called it a day. We were sitting at the dock at 1:45 waiting for weigh-in.” Watching the weights after the 4:30 p.m. check-in, Beach Marine’s 65.2 was enough for the win. Team Xtended Play took second with a 62.4, and Team Tuppens took third with a 59.2. “Team Beach Marine Products is blessed to have such a great group of fishermen on board,” Beach said. “Our team efficiency and confidence are incredible. It just flows.” The team consists of: Billy Delph, Travis Holeman, Teddy Beach, Daniel Delph and David Delph. L
eading the tournament wire-to-wire, Lakeland, Florida’s Bobby Lane won the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in early February. The Lane family is well known for catching winning sacks. Bobby’s brothers Chris and Arnie are also impressive anglers, and the family grew up fishing the Kissimmee Chain. Bobby, known as “Big Fish Bobby” on the Bassmaster Elite Series, showed the crowd why he’s earned that name at the day-one weigh-in. Bringing a 9-pounder as well as an 8-pound, 7-ounce fish to the scales, he tallied a massive five-fish sack of more than 31 pounds. He was the very first angler to weigh fish in front of a huge cheering group of attendees. Both of his big fish qualify for FWC’s TrophyCatch
Program. Lane held a commanding lead of more than 10 pounds headed into day two, which proved to be a lot tougher than day one. Leaving Big Lake Toho Marina in the latest flight of boats of the morning, Bobby was at the back of the pack to enter the lock leading to Lake Kissimmee. It was about 10 a.m. before he arrived at his best area… and his fish were not cooperating. Bobby made the decision to head back up the chain. He caught his final few keepers on Lake Toho and weighed in 10 pounds, 9 ounces on day two. Day two was tough on the whole field. Even with what appeared to be a light bag of fish, Bobby expanded his lead to 12 pounds headed into the final day of the event, when he chose not to run all the way down to Kissimmee. Early on, Bobby caught a few quality fish on Lake Hatchineha before locking back into Lake Toho to finish out his five-fish limit. On stage at the final-day weigh-ins, Bobby pulled out two more big girls to anchor an 18-pound sack, which brought his three-day total to 60 pounds. He held the winning margin by more than 12 pounds. Bobby Lane’s win qualifies him for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic and relieves the stress of qualifying by points through the Bassmaster Elite Tournaments against 107 of the best anglers in the country. Only 38 anglers will qualify for next year’s classic. Mud Hole Custom Tackle Pro Brandon Lester ended up in second place, finishing with almost 48 pounds. Lester caught his fish on topwater baits and punching heavy cover. Brandon credits his finish to the custom MHX Rods he built for the event during the evenings on his practice days. The flipping sticks he had were not heavy enough to muscle the big girls out of the cover, so he made a few new “broom sticks” that did the trick. The Orlando area’s Bobby Blakewell finished in second place on the Co-Angler side. Blakewell graduated high school last summer and was very successful on the high school circuit, fishing with the Seminole Jr. Anglers Club based in Oviedo in Seminole County. arming March temperatures will bring hot fishing to the Indian River Lagoon and the forks of the St. Lucie River. The water is clearing up nicely, and the big fish will head for the shallows on sunny days to wait for schools of bait circulating with the tides. Reports from the South Fork are promising. Look For Snook: When water temperatures reach the upper 70s, snook will head from the inlet and the deeper water to their spring haunts. On a good warm day, slot snook will be cruising the shorelines and bunching up around piers, mangroves and shoreline structure. You can fish shallow inside the sandbar as the tide turns to outgoing. I like a pearl white paddletail on an 1/8- or 1/16-oz. jighead. Fish slowly around the pier pilings, letting the jig hit the
bottom. I love wading in the spring (Walton/ Midway), but a flats boat will work too. Look For Trout: The trout bite is still good around Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and north. Some smaller trout have been caught south around Bear Point area. The grass is mostly gone, but the pockets of grass you find are holding trout. The fish are scattered on the flats along the east side up near Round Island’s Starvation Bay, Queen’s Cove and The Moorings. Look For Pompano, Bluefish, Mackerel: The cold-water fish are still here but will be moving out soon. Pompano are still around and are being caught off and around the bridges and channel edges on pompano jigs and jigs tipped with shrimp. I like fishing the edge of the channels and flats near the St. Lucie inlet on outgoing tide. Bluefish are still around, and some are resident fish. I caught three around the bridges (Jensen/Stuart) in the last month. Small schools of mackerel are moving along the deep channels to the inlet. Both mackerel and blues like small spoons, shallow crankbaits and fast-moving jigs. Don’t Forget The Ladies, Jacks: Ladyfish have been very active. Once you find some bait, chances are the bite will be on. I’ve had some great action on the shallow flats with some 4-lb. ladyfish that will bust your line. After two or three fish, you better retie. The jacks have been on again, off again. I’ve caught 20 in a day and one the next day. Look For Black Drum, Sheepshead: Some nice black drum and sheepshead have been caught free-lining (very little weight) live shrimp around the bridges on incoming tide. There are lots of small mangrove snapper around, so use a smaller hook. Look For Redfish, Flounder: I’ve been catching small slot reds on the flats around the bridge channels with DOA paddletails. They’ve also been near piers on the west side by the power plant lines. It’s a great time to go fishing. Even if the wind’s up, there’s always a place to get out of the chop. andy Moret pointed to port: “10 o’clock!” he said in a hushed voice. “Lead them.” It took a second for me to sight in, but a moving shadow just beyond the bow brought things into focus. A pod of 70-pound tarpon were running a channel edge and we were perfectly positioned for an intercept. Late with the cast, I dropped my streamer on the nose of the lead fish, which promptly turned and powered into oblivion across the shallow flats of Florida Bay, compatriots in tow. Moret smiled and politely let me off the hook. “Happens all the time down here,” he said. “We’ll get another shot.” Chalk one up to lessons learned. A heavy front was moving in, and what had been a drizzly morning suddenly turned threatening, sending us racing back to port for a round of refreshments at the Lorelei Marina (www.loreleicabanabar.com/ marina-and-fishing). With the Florida Keys steadily rebounding from the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma, anglers across the country are once again making plans for an assault on the stellar flats fishery here. Featuring tarpon, bonefish, redfish, snook and sea trout, the shallows of Florida Bay and Everglades National Park on the village’s lee side are ideal for fly fishing and Moret, one of the founding fathers of long-wand sport in these waters, couldn’t be happier. “We still have a way to go before everyone is back on their feet, but we are getting there,” he said in a recent interview. “As for the fishing, it’s bounced back nicely.” As a guide and outfitter, Moret (www.floridakeysoutfitters. com) logically suggests first-timers to the area head out with a professional skipper. “It’s the quickest way to learn the intricacies of tempting local gamefish,” he explained. Still, he noted that the
fishing in these parts is consistent enough that those launching a kayak or even fishing from shore around bridges and passes have a chance to score. “The most important thing in the Keys is to practice your casting – especially when flyfishing,” he advised. “It’s vital to make a few casts in every spot you stop to factor in the wind, current and water depth courtesy of Sandy Moret before you even see the Photo Sandy Moret shows off a chunky Islamorada fish.” snook taken on the fly. He likes a size 4 creamand-tan Merkin with lead eyes for bonefish. For silver kings, a Keys Tarpon Streamer in purple and black is his choice for murky water. To target snook and redfish, he throws purple Deceivers in discolored water and yellow and white in clear water. Concentrate your efforts on rising tides to avoid groundings, he cautions, and keep moving until you find the fish. Getting to Islamorada is easy. Find your way to Miami or Fort Lauderdale and head south on U.S. 1. uring the 2017 season, walleye anglers on Lake Erie experienced the highest recorded success in nearly 30 years. “The New York State waters of Lake Erie are world famous for outstanding angling opportunities for walleye, smallmouth bass and yellow perch,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “Our Lake Erie waters have consistently ranked among
the top three most heavily fished waters in the state, and the fishery generates more than $26 million in economic activity annually. Anglers should take advantage of Lake Erie’s current conditions and experience this world-class walleye fishery for themselves in 2018.” DEC has conducted an angler survey on Lake Erie to estimate fishing quality and fish harvest annually since 1988. In recent years, walleye fishing quality has been generally increasing. Survey results for 2017 revealed record-high walleye catch rates that are nearly three times greater than the 30-year average. DEC estimates that anglers harvested more than 70,000 walleyes in 2017, a level not achieved since 1989. This exceptional fishing was due in large part to contributions of strong walleye reproductive success in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Recent evidence also suggests that walleye reproduction was strong again in 2016. Walleye are one of the most popular gamefish in New York, as they put up an exciting fight during the catch and make for tasty meal on the table. Walleye are aptly named because of their unique eyes that have a reflective layer of pigment called the tapetum lucidum, which allows them to see very well at night and during other low-light periods. This layer also gives walleye their “glassy-eyed” or “wall-eyed” appearance. Lake Erie is continually ranked among the world’s top walleye fishing destinations by angler publications, with an abundance of trophy-size walleye ranging from 8 to 10 pounds. Local tournament winners often score fish exceeding 11 lbs. Given that walleye typically live 10 years or more in Lake Erie combined with excellent reproduction rates in recent years, anglers should experience continued, exceptional walleye fishing in future years.

T
fishing teams and ordered extra fresh ballyhoo for trolling and teaser mullet. The first day of the event started off as one of the better days of fishing in the entire 2017-2018 sailfish tournament season on the Treasure Coast. The fleet caught and released 48 sailfish, but the captains saw what they wanted to see – eager and active fish. Vintage, led by Capt. Hans Kraaz of Fort Pierce, who jokingly boasts owning the fleet’s cheapest boat, but has the most expensive crew, won the first of two daily awards for the week with eight sailfish releases. Day two, however, had the captains, mates and anglers poised for a big bite. And the sailfish did not disappoint. By day’s end, the fleet caught 182 sailfish and competitors were eyeing

An on again, off again December for sailfish specialists was in the books, but a few days after Santa Claus dropped by, the sailfish decided to take up a pit stop on their migratory route south. A
s we make our way through the winter months, the fishing continues to change. The snook fishing was slow through January due to cold water temps in the 50s. February has picked up a little bit for snook fishing, but the water is still mostly in the low 60s, so the snook should be hungry as bait shows up
more when the water warms back up in March. With snook season now open, a few keepers have been caught jigging the bridges with First Light two-ounce jigs. Smaller snook have been very hit or miss along the mangrove shoreline back in the South Fork casting D.O.A. C.A.L. Jigs and Giles’ Jigs. The pompano bite has been very steady just inside the inlet using sand fleas as bait on fish finder rigs. We caught pompano with incoming and outgoing tide in seven feet of water between the inlet channels. The fishermen jigging the bridges have been catching lots of pompano with pink and chartreuse half-ounce jigs with teasers during incoming tide. The inshore pompano bite can be best in March when schools start to show up on the flats and start skipping. Wade fishing for pompano can be lots of fun on the
Sailfish Flats when the water gets back in the 70s. There has recently been lots of redfish showing up near the inlet and back in the St. Lucie River and South Fork. Jim Harter caught a 25-incher recently back in Palm City Bay casting a D.O.A. Key Lime C.A.L. Jig. Some redfish have been caught along the inlet jetty’s casting shrimp on a three-eighth-ounce jig head and swinging it with the tide. Another great method is Saltwater Spinner Baits back in the St. Lucie River casting along the mangroves and near docks. We should hopefully see the redfish stay here as long as the water quality stays okay. The mackerel bite should slow down in March, but it is still an option for fun with the family! All you need is a Gulfstream Flash Minnow Jig on a light tackle rod.

xcellent snapper fishing will continue to prevail through the days of March and will highlight the diversity of bottom dwelling fish that can be caught among the many reefs, wrecks, and snags that lay beneath the offshore waters of Martin County. Lane snapper will still be posted up on near shore reefs and artificial structures in 50 to 60 feet of water and will land in big numbers on fish box ice, again this month. Sturdy mangrove snapper will also be representing in a similar zone and on structures out to 90 feet of water. Mutton snapper will make a solid showing in the March ocean, with medium to larger representatives of the species (10- to 20-pound fish) making their presence known along the naturally occurring reef line in 70 to 80 feet of salty liquid. The anchored boat will encompass the best strategy for getting attached to these salty snapper groceries, as precision positioning will be crucial in cycling for "snapper slams" and will allow anglers to settle in overtop of favorite fishing spots to conduct a surgical strike against their scaly opponents. forecasting is not an exact science, it`s not uncommon to see late arriving cold fronts that wipe out the offshore playing field at any time during the month. So, with this in mind, keep a mindful eye on the weather and be prepared for when a user-friendly window does open. Using forecast savvy web pages like Windfinder.com can help with planning for an offshore fishing trip for a particular week. Another excellent virtual, web page is Windstream at earth.nullschool. net, which is a satellite wind map that gives a snapshot of wind velocity and direction, and allows the user to position a cursor, offshore, via a GPS number to determine wind velocity in an area one may be considering to fish on that day. Open weather friendly windows will lead to a colorful bounty of snapper during this offshore calendar month and will also have the potential to host a flurry of cobia activity, as hungry cobes glide through our zone during the fishy days of March.

arch has arrived on the Treasure Coast, and traditionally, we can expect windy conditions along with some rain clouds most days. It might dictate where and when you can get on the water, but at least we aren't cutting holes in the ice to fish! Water temperatures will continue to rise and the fish will be actively feeding on the flats. Winter was a little cooler for us in February. March brings the transition into spring and things will warm up again. As the sun warms up the water again, look for fish to travel into the shallows to feed. Trout will continue to be most prevalent in the deeper grass flats in two to four feet of water. Those anglers using live shrimp on popping corks, Deadly Combos, C.A.L. jerk baits and top water will have the best chance at hooking up with a trout. I like to fish the edges of the shallows where the water drops

off to these depths. You can find trout in four to six feet of water and they will move onto the shallower flats to let the sun warm them as the day goes on. Depending on weather conditions, there are many areas to fish. Round Island, Bear Point and Harbor Branch are always popular to fish in March. Redfish will get more active this month and you can find some tailing on the flats in early mornings. Top water, D.O.A. 2 ¾-inch shrimp, C.A.L. grub tails or gold spoons are good choices for finding a spot tail on the flats. Don't forget to fish around the mangroves also. So far this winter, there has continued to be a good redfish population around the river and the fishing has been fantastic for them. I tend to like the

east side of the river for redfish, but you can find them on the west side also. Work your baits slowly along the bottom for best results. This has been a good winter to allow us to enjoy a good redfish bite around the docks and mangroves with nice sized slot fish. Learn to read the water so you don’t miss what is happening around you. Anglers will continue to target snook around the inlets, docks and bridges. Live bait always works best, but feather jigs, TerrorEyz and D.O.A. Bait Busters can also get you hooked up. Most of the action will be at night with best results on the high ends of the tides. As the water warms up around the area, the snook action will liven up also. Those fishing the flats can also find snook feeding early
tag along with for the ride north. Riding “shotgun”, this dynamic duo is truly a majestic sight for anglers and sightseers alike. Have your pitch rod rigged with a jig and keep a look out for the massive black shapes to glide by, and when you spot one, pitch toward it. Once you are hooked up, be ready to hold on to your hat, the cobia will melt the line off your reel! When landing a green cobia, it will put a beating on the boat and anything in its path, so watch your feet and get it inside the fish box asap. These fish are awesome fighters, delicious table fare and they love it on the Treasure Coast. March is unpredictable in regard to the winds and weather, but if you can break the inlet, you’ll be guaranteed an awesome day of fishing. Check the buoys, channel markers and sea-drift for baitfish, triple tails and mahi. Look for mutton and gray snapper along the way and a steady king mackerel bite. Tight lines and good vibes.

Top water, twitch baits, TerrorEyz or C.A.L. jerk baits can do the trick on the flats. The pompano bite has been better this year, once the water cooled down. It takes cooler weather bringing them into the area. Whiting, bluefish and pompano will be hanging around the beaches this month. The inlet will be holding Spanish mackerel, jacks and bluefish. Jack crevalle and ladyfish continue to haunt the river and provide fun catch for all. Bridges should give up catches of sand perch, sheepshead and black drum on live or dead shrimp. This year has been the best sheepshead bite in many years. They are not only tasty, but they put up a good battle for anglers. Spring is just around the corner on the Treasure Coast. It won't be long! Take some time to check all your equipment now and be ready as the weather improves to get out on the water. Make sure your reels are in good working order. Check your rods for broken or cracked tips and guides. How old is that line? Get ready now on some of these windy days ahead, so you will be ready to head out to the water soon! he inshore bite for redfish should be good in the deeper holes up around Jack Island and Queen's Cove. Try a D.O.A. Bait Buster or a live shrimp fished under a popping cork. As the day warms up, redfish

will come up onto the flats and take the same baits. Trout fishing should remain good, as long as the water temperatures don't drop too much more. For trout, free line a live pilchard or again a live shrimp under a popping cork. The snook action in the turning basin and the Fort Pierce Inlet will be good when using pinfish or pigfish and fishing them on the bottom. The tackle for snook should be a medium to heavy rod with a reel with at least 30-pound test line and a 24-inch leader of 40- to 50-pound fluorocarbon leader and enough weight to hold the bottom. In the Fort
Pierce Inlet, it may take as much as five- to eight-ounces of weight and one- to 2-ounces around the bridges. I like using a 5/0 live bait hook. The tide changes will be your best time to fish. Around the local bridges, the snapper, black drum and sheepshead are all taking live shrimp, clams or a piece of cut bait. There should still be plenty of mackerel, bluefish and jacks working their way in the Fort Pierce Inlet as they follow the bait schools. The pompano bite should be good in the surf when using clams or sand fleas along with some whiting and croakers.

arch is here and the cobia will be too. With cooling water temperatures that have moved into our area, cobia will also be coming into the waters off the Treasure Coast. When weather allows and you can get outside the inlets, it is a great time to target cobia. Cobia is an awesome fighting fish and one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. These fish will be found from just off the beach on out to 80 to 90 feet depths. There are various ways to find cobia. They follow manta rays, swim behind turtles, and swim with sharks or with bait schools. On days with westerly winds or if there are days with light to no wind, you will be able to sight fish cobia. Look for manta rays or turtles and cast behind them to see if there is any cobia following them. I suggest trolling live baits such

as pilchards, greenies or sardines slowly while looking for cobia on the chance that they may not be visible. You can run the beach on calmer days looking for schools of sharks. When sharks are found, scan the area to see if any cobia is mixed in with the sharks. Whether you locate a cobia or not, cast a two to two-anda-half-ounce jig, preferably with a tail on it, or a big bass worm or an eel like jig, past the school of sharks and work it back to the boat. This will catch the attention of any cobia. Keep in mind, when picking out your
jig, eels are a favorite food of cobia. Cobia will check out the jig and many times hit it. If they don’t eat the jig, they will often follow it back to the boat. In this instance, have another rod ready and rigged with live bait or a whole squid to toss at the cobia to entice it to eat. Cobia can also be caught while bottom fishing. They are a curious fish. They will swim right up to your boat to check it out. While bottom fishing, always have a rod rigged with a bait or jig in case a cobia shows up and always keep an eye on the water.

I recommend using a sevenfoot rod with a good backbone. The length of the rod will help on casting a lure farther to the fish and the backbone will help for the fight. I would recommend a 6000 to 8000 sized reel spooled with at least 30-pound braid and 50-pound leader with a 6/0 live bait or circle hook. On our coast, cobia are caught up to 50 to 60 pounds and the chance of a bigger one is always there. You will want tackle to handle the big one that may be around. When you catch a cobia and get it boat side, if you are not sure that it is legal size, it is best to use a net to land it so you can release the fish unharmed if it is too short. Also, if at all possible, use a net to land even a legal fish; it will be just a little bit calmer when landed. Be careful after landing these fish because they are powerful, they can destroy anything and everything in the cockpit. The best bet is to get them on ice in the cooler or fish box and the lid locked down as soon as possible. Be careful of the spines on a cobia’s back between the heads and dorsal fin. They are very sharp and covered with bacteria from the slime and can cause a painful puncture through your skin. Have fun and tight lines!

M
arch is the beginning of the spring season in the Sebastian area. The list of readily available gamefish species expands to include leftover winter migrants, resident species and the first of the warm water species arriving from their wintering grounds to take advantage of the abundant food sources of the Indian River Lagoon. With this many type of fish and fishing available, it’s no wonder why the Sebastian area is a popular springtime destination for fishermen and families. Serious anglers can target trophy size snook or attempt to take their first tarpon on fly in the morning and be enjoying family time with the wife and kids catching a variety of species on nearly every cast the
River – The Sebastian River is a great springtime fishery. Barring excessive cold weather in February, snook and tarpon fishing should kick off in March. Along with a good number of juvenile tarpon and a fair number of snook, schools of good sized jack crevalle will begin to cruise the north fork of the Sebastian River as they migrate into the area from their southern wintering grounds. The Sebastian River will continue to be a refuge for anglers on cold, windy days, and the best place to target snook and tarpon in March.
Indian River Lagoon – Trout and redfish are the main target of lagoon anglers in March. From the backwaters to the spoil islands along the Intracoastal Channel, trout of all sizes can keep anglers busy. Redfish and snook are also available and will generally stay close to shoreline cover since the grass beds are still non-existent. A four-inch D.O.A. C.A.L. jerk-bait on a one-eighthounce head is a great all around lure to target everything that swims in

the lagoon in March. Live shrimp fished below a small float will be hard to beat under the right conditions or if you find a concentration of fish. Wade fishing will give anglers an edge and March is probably the best month to employ this tactic. There should be action fishing for ladyfish, jacks, blues and small trout around islands, drop-offs, and the channels and flats behind Sebastian Inlet.
Sebastian Inlet – Sebastian
Inlet has produced some snook since the Febuary 1st season opening. The early part of the spring snook season at the inlet can be hit or miss and is very dependent on water temps. Live shrimp are the bait of choice during the spring season as snook and other predators key in on the shrimp that are running out the inlet at night. Slot and oversized redfish have also been taking advantage of
the crustacean buffet at the inlet. Big jack crevalle, bluefish, pompano, Spanish mackerel, black drum and sheepshead are also available to inlet anglers in March.
Near Shore Atlantic – The
waters from the beach on out a few miles can be very productive in March if the winds allow boaters and surf fishermen the opportunity to fish them. Surf fishermen target pompano, bluefish and mackerel as they begin their northern migration. Boaters can do the same and keep an eye out for cruising cobia and large schools of double digit jack crevalle. Sharks, bonito and king mackerel can also join the beach party in late March. The springtime weather is great and the opportunities are many in the paradise that is Sebastian. Tight lines.

arch is the best month for the cobia run in our area. Veteran anglers will watch the water temperature and listen for reports that say, “The run is on!” This is when you cash in on that well deserved sick day you’ve been saving up at work. The cobia generally move north along the coast as the water warms. Often, cooler water temps to the north (below 65 degrees) will put the cobes in a holding pattern between Fort Pierce and Cape Canaveral. The area midway between Sebastian and Cape Canaveral is always a good bet. Look for bait pods, temperature breaks and subtle weed lines in the 40 to 80 feet range. Spend some time looking at sea surface temperature charts the day before a cobia hunting trip. The fish will often be near that temperature break in the mid-sixties. Cobia
anglers will sight fish for hours looking for the brown bombers cruising just under the surface. The payoff is watching a group of cobias charge a lure and experiencing the “firedrill” that ensues. Try cobia jigs or big swim baits and increase the retrieve when a fish charges. Wait until the fish is pointed away from you before aggressively setting the hook. Jigs will need an especially hard set to move the jig in that abrasive mouth. Traditionally, the big mahi in the 30-plus-pound class, move through this time of year. Water temp is especially important in finding the fish. The typical trolling grounds of summer can be a bit chilly for the warm water loving mahi. Try to get out there in that mid-seventies water if you can. If you can’t, there will be blackfins, sails, wahoo, kings and others caught on the troll, in the cooler water closer to shore. Bottom fishing will continue to be solid this month. Grouper and
different hook sizes and presentations to bring all the species into play. There has been a good run of large lane snapper as of late. They prefer a smaller piece of cut bait and are found on patchy reefs rather than big relief areas. Kingfish fishing will continue to be solid this month. Keep a live bait or a frozen sardine freelined while bottom fishing. The kings will need a small wire leader. Target them by slow trolling and drifting over the reefs or adjacent to areas where the commercial king boats are working. Keep a couple baits near the surface and a couple baits at middepth. Kerr and Dupuis Take First-Place in February BCFA Fishing Tourney F
orty-six teams battled the wind and choppy waters February 3rd, for the Backcountry Fishing Association’s second tournament of the year. At the end of the day, 18 teams weighed fish, with trout being the most prolific at the scales. Only two redfish and one snook were weighed in, and there were no slams. New members Brian Kerr and Ryan Dupuis pulled it together landing the first-place standing with a 2.23-pound trout and a 10.30-pound snook. The duo won $822.50 for their day of fishing. Ryan Jouppi and alternate, David Jouppi (Ryan’s father) pulled secondplace with a 1.62-pound trout and a 6.30-pound redfish, taking home $493.50. With their red being the biggest of the day, they also received a Taco Dive gift certificate. Brandon Miller and Mark Williams took home $329 for their third-place position with a 4.45-pound redfish. The team also won a Taco Dive gift certificate for

being one of the 2 teams out of 46 boats to bring a redfish to the weigh in. Zack Brady and Eric Newman took fourth-place after catching a 3.53-pound trout, which earned them $230 for the trout Calcutta. The Backcountry Fishing Association tournament is a tenmonth circuit, running January through October, ending with a two-day Classic in October. The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers the opportunity to win cash and

gain points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. Teams must participate in at least five tournaments and pay for eight to be eligible to fish the Classic, which is a two-day event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season are given a bye from day one. The remaining eligible teams compete on an elimination basis the first day, where only the top five teams of day one will progress to day two to compete against the season point leaders for the grand prize and
cash for the top four teams. A Billfish 14-foot boat, motor and trailer combo is the grand prize for the winners. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournaments each month, the fee is $60 per team. Tournaments are held the first Saturday of each month, with the captain's meeting taking place the Friday prior at Little Jim Bait and Tackle on the North Causeway, Fort Pierce. Currently 54 teams are in the 2018 circuit. The third tournament of the series takes place on Saturday, March 3rd (Captain's meeting on Friday, March 2nd).

onditions for diving should finally start to improve as the year progresses, and the effects of hurricanes and strong cold fronts begin to fade. Its seems like the wind didn’t stop blowing for months but with water warming and lobster season still open until the end of the month, March is a great time of year for diving. Divers should expect weather conditions to become increasingly more favorable as the frequent cold fronts of January and February begin to subside. More opportunities to head offshore should allow divers to make the most of the last few weeks of lobster season before it closes at the end of the month. So far, this year has been dry with minimal rain and very little freshwater runoff from local

canals, so visibility on the Treasure Coast has been quite good! Passing fronts may churn the shallow water close to shore, but after a few days of calm conditions, this turbidity settles down and clear water returns. On incoming tide, clear water is reaching far inshore to the Stuart Sandbar. Snorkeling can be quite good here along the mangroves and some of the deep edges of the spoil islands
just south of the Stuart Causeway. Remember a snorkel is considered a ‘breathing apparatus’ and requires use of a dive flag. March is the last chance for lobster hunters to stock up for the upcoming summer and catch dinner before the season closes at the end of the month. Lobster should be everywhere since fewer divers have been able to make it offshore due to the challenging ocean
conditions of the past few months. Bag limits should be very easy to come by! Divers may notice an increase in the number of egg-bearing female lobster since the breeding season starts soon. The bright orange eggs are easy to spot but are sometimes overlooked so divers are wise to double-check the underside of the tail for eggs, especially this time of year. Pregnant female lobster are easy to identify because they usually keep their tail curled up protecting the eggs underneath. To increase their chances of survival and release of their offspring, care should be taken to avoid unnecessary damage to females during capture. Hunters should check fishing regulations before heading out since many seasons and size limits have recently changed, especially mutton and hogfish. Kicking Off Spring Fishing in March
“I
t depends” is probably one of the most used words from guides all over the world when it comes to answering a client’s question. There is not such a thing like “for sure” in the fishing game regardless of how talented you may be. Thank goodness we are really spoiled here on the Treasure Coast. “It depends” is more related to what kind of fish we chase and fishing techniques, instead of catching or not catching. It all depends on the weather where I choose my fishing. March is when I start running my boat along the beaches more often to see what’s out there and to fire me up for the next month of what’s to come. Inshore I fish everything from the flats, mangroves, channels, docks to the river and creeks. Searching and discovering snook,
trout, redfish and whatever is out there is what I love to do! Our area is also famous for incredible night fishing. March is a great month for this type of fishing und usually delivers consistent big snook. Make sure to have a good and strong current (incoming or outgoing tide). Find docks and bridges where the wind is coming from the same direction as the current. Wind and waves and some color in the water are always good to hide the thicker tippet you’ll need for these big girls. I like to fish small shrimp flies in white or sand and baitfish flies in white/olive or white/ green size 1 to 4. Use strong hooks like the Mustad O’Shaughnessy bait hook. Even though it is called a bait hook it is one of the best and strongest hooks to tie flies on, especially in small sizes! Use your

Treasure Coast Spanish Mackerel Fishing:

Spanish mackerel aren’t only fun to catch, they’re fun to eat.
Underrated
e recently set out in our bay boat on an ordinary Saturday afternoon in early January with hopes of finding the Spanish mackerel we heard had been biting outside the St. Lucie Inlet. The weather was overcast, with the sun occasionally peeking out through the clouds, but the temperature was still cool enough to wear a hoodie sweatshirt. We ran south of the inlet to an area known as Peck Lake where Spanish mackerel typically school up in the cooler months. You can typically find the mackerel by running to the large group of boats on the horizon. On this day, it was fairly obvious where the mackerel were biting, as there were over 40 boats grouped together in a relatively small area. Recreational anglers can anchor
and chum up the mackerel, or simply drift outside the boats that are stationary. Regardless, one must be mindful to stay a healthy distance away from the commercial fisherman who are anchored up and chumming; they don’t take kindly to recreational boats entering their chum slick. We chose to drift outside of the anchored boats and the fish were plentiful, to say the least. Using light tackle spinning rods with glass minnow jigs on 50-pound mono leader was most effective, but anything shiny like a gold spoon, sting silver lure, or Got-Cha plug also works great. They are also fun to catch on a fly rod. The idea is to cast towards the fish and reel the lure back to you as fast as you can. Let me tell you, you better hold on when a mackerel hits

your bait! Weighing in at whopping one-to-five-pounds each, you would think you had a baby billfish on the other end of your line. The bites are aggressive, fast and oftentimes on or near the surface. Nothing is more exciting than when you get a bite and the rod is bent over with the line whipping off the reel and the fish flashing beneath the water’s surface. Between the three of us, we caught about 50 fish within an hour. We released the majority of the fish, but we did keep enough for dinner that night. While Spanish mackerel are fun to catch, they are also underestimated table fare. We fileted our fish and left the skin on. We then baked it, skin side down, with butter, lemon and our favorite seasonings. We also like to use the mackerel in ceviche, our recipe for which is detailed. Spanish mackerel fishing is fun for anglers of all levels. Whether introducing a kid to fishing in an action-packed manner or challenging yourself with a fly rod, mackerel fishing is worth the experience. CEVICHE RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
• 2 cups - Spanish mackerel filet removing the outer skin and cut meat into small bite-size pieces • 6 limes – freshly squeezed • 1 cup - diced purple onion • 1 cup - diced sweet peppers (variety of colors) • 1 cup - diced romaine tomatoes • 1 cup - diced fresh cilantro • 1 jalapeno - seeded and diced • Garlic, salt and pepper to taste! To sweeten or to cut the bitterness of the lime add a juice of a fresh squeezed orange.
Directions: Mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate for 1 hour. Serve chilled with your favorite tortilla chips. Enjoy!

Safety First
n last month’s article, we discussed basic wind knowledge, choosing the correct kite for the conditions as well as basic set up. However, before a kite is ever flown, you should have mastered your understanding of the safety systems and protocols. By far the most important safety mechanisms are the safety releases, there are usually two. The first and most important is the main release, this is located just above the chicken loop (the loop that connects the kite/ lines to the rider’s harness). Although there are variations of the design of this mechanism, the general rule with all releases is that they pull away from the rider. This allows the kiter to use the tension of their body to pull against and activate the release. Once this release is activated, three of the four lines (on a four-line kite) will go slack, allowing only one of the center lines to take the pressure. This

deactivates the kite by causing it to “flag out” and fall out of the sky. If you are in deep water, the kite can then be turned into a sailable raft that you can lay on and use to navigate back to the beach. This is called the self-rescue technique and must be demonstrated by an instructor. In very rare cases the main release is not enough to avert the situation at hand. In this case there is one more release located on the end of your “safety leash”. This leash is connected to the “flagging line”, which is the one line that remains connected after the main release is activated. When activated, this secondary release will completely separate you from the kite/lines. It is important to note that the secondary release will do nothing without first pulling the main release. Once you’ve been taught all of the above by your instructor, it will then be time for a launch. Typically, the
instructor will be the initial kite flyer and you will be the kite launcher. This means that the instructor will walk 90 degrees to the wind on one side and you will walk 90 to the other, making the lines perpendicular to the wind direction. From there, both parties will double-check the lines and systems for any tangles. If all looks good, the instructor/kite flyer will walk a few degrees upwind so that the kite starts to generate lift. At this point, the kite flyer will give the kite launcher a thumbs up. This signals that it is okay for the launcher to let go of the kite. Never let go of a kite before you see a thumbs up! Now that the kite is airborne, basic controls will be discussed. There are four main controls, left, right, sheeting in (pulling bar in), and sheeting out (pushing bar out). Sheeting in will pull the trailing edge of the kite in and create more lift/more power while
sheeting out does the opposite. To turn the kite, we have to create drag on one wing tip or the other. For example, if I want the kite to go left, I pull the left side of the bar towards me while pushing the right side away from me. Often beginners try to steer the kite like a car steering wheel. The kite will not respond to this. Our kite is now airborne and we understand the basic controls. The excitement continues next month when we learn to create and manage the power we need to ride! 700 Modules Readied for Indian Hills Oyster Reef Deployment O
n January 20, 79 volunteers created 700 modules in less than three hours. Jack and Jill of the Treasure Coast originally called for the bagging day and was joined by dozens of other volunteers, including volunteers from TBB St. Lucie Church, Dad’s Small Engine Repairs, LCarter Consulting, and other, non-
affiliated volunteers. It is great to see businesses getting out to support environmental restoration projects in St. Lucie County. These businesses believe in the benefit of a healthy environment to their bottom line. Volunteers were joined by Florida SeaGrant Marine Extension Agent LeRoy Creswell who discussed the

importance of oyster reefs on water quality and fish habitat. LeRoy had spawned many oysters while at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and imparted much of his wisdom to the new oyster volunteers. LeRoy is one of the original members of the St. Lucie County Oyster Reef Restoration Program.
The new modules will be deployed at the Indian Hills STA Oyster Reef. Creation of this reef has been sponsored by the Indian River Lagoon Council, with deployment scheduled for late spring/summer of 2018. There are almost enough modules to create this reef in its entirety, but another bagging session is slated for April 14. All interested volunteers welcome to attend this session. Other volunteers were on-hand to support the work of the volunteers who produced the modules. Bags were cut and stapled by Marine and Oceanographic Academy (MOA) preparatory students from Forest Grove Middle School. Similarly, bags for the next bagging day will be made by students from the Indian River State College’s Science Club. Due to the large number of volunteers coming to these sessions, additional bagging materials (tubes and funnels) will be fabricated by Indian River Lagoon Solutions. Three firms have been selected as artificial reef consultants: Coastal Systems International, CT Marine Services, and Ecological Associates (EA). These firms will perform assorted duties and all three are capable of permitting oyster reef restoration in the coming years.

EA has gone one step further in promoting oyster restoration in St. Lucie County—EA has identified three properties along Indian River Drive where the property owners are willing to create an oyster reef waterward of their property. This is in addition to 12 property owners who have already expressed interest in creating oyster reefs. EA has volunteered to help the County apply for additional grant funding to construct oyster reefs waterward of Indian River Drive. It is hoped that many oyster reefs can be developed along Indian River Drive to compliment the Indian Hills STA oyster reef, create new fish habitat, and test the ability of oyster modules
to retain sand along the shoreline, widening beach areas and potentially increasing the sustainability of both aquatic habitats and the shoreline that supports Indian River Drive. This will be a multiyear project. It is hoped that increased fish habitat and widening shorelines will lead to further oyster reef deployments in the area.

Vintage won the daily with nine tied by Champagne Lady except for time of last release. Grand Slam caught five for 30 overall, and held on to win the team’s third straight Pelican Yacht Club Billfish Invitational. The fleet found 89 on the last day to wind up with 373 overall – the tournament’s fifth best finish and is in the top seven alltime in the 64-year history of sailfish tournaments on the Treasure Coast. The sailfish fishing season remained one of the best for charter fishing throughout the month of January, thanks to regular cold fronts.

Nicholas Rosario wins TCC February tournament
icholas Rosario took the firstplace slot of the Treasure Coast Casters (TCC) Senior Inshore Division Tournament held on Sunday, February 11. Second-place went to Ciara Franqui, and thirdplace to Josh Richter. “The wind picked up late morning, but we had beautiful weather, and the fish were biting,” said tournament cochair Cammie Ward. Weigh masters John and Theresa Gilson, residents of Ohio and longtime TCC supporters, weighed in catches of black drum, blue fish, croaker, mangrove snapper, sheepshead and Spanish mackerel. The youth anglers brag-worthy catches included: Brayden Adams with a 2.02-pound sheepshead; Ciara Franqui with a mangrove snapper and two sheepshead, one weighing in at 2.02-pounds; Jake Lee a 1.04-pound sheepshead and Spanish mackerel; Owen Nail a 2.09-pound sheepshead; Jeff Richter a 1.09-pound sheepshead; Josh Richter a 3.10-pound black drum, and also a mangrove snapper; Nicholas Rosario with a 4.07-pound bluefish (the largest fish of the tournament), as well as two mangrove snappers and a croaker. After all the fish were weighed in, final points and standings were: 1st: Nicholas Rosario, 70 points 2nd: Ciara Franqui, 35 points 3rd: Josh Richter, 30 points Prize bags were provided by MirrOLure. he Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club has a high priority for membership as well as public boating safety. Number 1: When checking with the tow boat companies, we find the number one reason boaters calling for assistance is running out of fuel. The preventive solution for this is fairly obvious and every boater should be preplanning as to the length of time they anticipate being on the water and the amount of fuel they will be using. Obvious as it seems, please make this a high priority on your prep list. Number 2: The second most common safety concern is water entering the boat hull. It is interesting to note that within three miles of launch ramps there is an inordinate number of boats
requiring assistance for taking on water, and in some instances even sinking. Trailer boats or rack stored boats are particularly vulnerable as skippers may inadvertently forget to install the hull plug prior to launch. Although this is another obvious item there are still way too many recurrences. Another safety concern regarding water entering the hull can be traced to through-hulls and hoses that are located below the water line. All hoses and through-hulls should be checked annually at a minimum, and if there are gate valves on any of these fittings, they should be tested frequently to assure they are all in proper working order. These simple preventative maintenance activities assure a safe day on the water. Number 3: Another area of concern is
that many boats carry little or no water in the hull. Therefore, owners do not know whether the automatic bilge float switch or the bilge pump itself are actually working. It is a good safety practice at least twice per year to take a fresh water garden hose and put enough water into the hull to verify the switch and pump are functioning properly and discharging bilge water overboard. Keeping these few basic items high on your priority list will help keep your time on the water safe, fishable and fun! “N
othing stays the same”, as the old saying goes. It’s midFebruary and I’m in the office with some time to reflect on another successful season fishing here in Southwest Florida. It’s an Obsession It’s common for outdoorsmen to get into a comfortable rhythm in our sporting activities. We are creatures of habit and patterns. Following our quarry day after day, joining in on their prehistoric rhythm as the weeks turn into months. Fortunately, for anglers here in Southern Florida, nearly eight months of the year offer favorable temperature and conditions starting in March and holding well into the late fall. There are few species that captivate me as an angler like the tarpon does. It’s hard to argue the silver king’s position as the ultimate inshore saltwater game fish. These animals have migrated the warm southern oceans for millions of years. They follow ancient routes along the Caribbean through the Florida Keys, stopping along the immense labyrinth of islands and passes along the Ten Thousand Islands northward along the upper Gulf of Mexico and back again. Frequently reaching sizes upwards of two hundred pounds, the tarpon will test the best anglers’ wits and stamina. Some days, they feed with reckless abandon, devouring anything crossing before them. There are days where you may watch hundreds of tarpon swim past you, ignoring even the most delicate presentations. They are predictable, yet wholly unpredictable at the same
time. You’ll find yourself feeling confident, to be quickly humbled as they disappear on a single tide change. This challenge, the hunt, the presentation, the strike and the battle accumulate into one of our sport’s greatest achievements and obsessions. There is a brotherhood of guides and anglers that target them for months on end, only to patiently wait out the winter months, eagerly awaiting their arrival in spring. The Last Dance I always try to hold onto those last couple local fish of the season. Those moments of excitement will be remembered often over the next few months of winter. You’ll reminisce on the battles over strong beverages with fellow tarpon anglers and patiently wait for the return of the king. Rewards For The Travelers For those like myself who can’t go for more than a few weeks without hunting tarpon, angling opportunities exist during the coldest winter months if you know where to look. It’s not exactly a secret, but word doesn’t travel far about one of the best tarpon bites that occurs in South Florida. Every winter, during the coldest of front and strongest of winds, an epic bite unfolds under the cover of darkness along Miami’s Biscayne Bay and it’s connecting inlets. When the tides are right, shrimp migrations of massive proportions being pouring out of Biscayne Bay toward the ocean to spawn. This massive movement of food gathers tarpon by the thousands as they gorge on the giant crustaceans. A few select

anglers have followed this migration for years and can predict the best tides and winds to fish this epic bite. The most productive techniques match the hatch and drift palm sized shrimp on light wire hooks along the inlets. Strikes are explosive and ravenous for those brave enough to battle the weather, looking for those hidden winter tarpon.

Robert J. Skidmore, Sr. Scholarship Fund The Robert J. Skidmore, Sr. Scholarship is for college-bound high school seniors pursuing a career involved with the marine industries. Administered by the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC), this scholarship was named to honor Robert J. Skidmore, Sr., who passed in 2004. Mr. Skidmore became a member of MIATC in 1988 when he moved to the Treasure Coast. He served on the association’s board in 1989 and served as president in 1993 and 1994. He had a love for the marine industry and treasured those who had high work ethics. Each year local artist Dan Mackin donates a Giclee for the association to raffle to benefit the fund. The drawing is held in June at the association’s Annual Dinner.

New IGFA Observer Training in Mattituck, Long Island

The International Game Fish Association will conduct an observer training courses in New York on Long Island at Strong’s Water Club and Marina in Mattituck, Long Island, New York on Saturday, May 19. The half-day session teaches observer responsibilities and duties, billfish identification, and IGFA’s International Angling Rules. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes a training manual, two DVD’s, a one-year IGFA membership and costs just $150. hen Leesburg, Fla. angler Tim Frederick turned pro and began competing on the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour, the first event of his career was at Lake Okeechobee in February of 2016. Frederick caught just one bass in two days of competition at that tournament and finished in last place. In late January, Frederick redeemed himself by catching a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 14 ounces, to win the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude.
Frederick’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 85-4 gave him the win by a narrow 1-pound, 2-ounce margin over second-place pro Bryan Schmitt. It earned him $100,000 in a dramatic finale to the four-day event that featured 188 of the best bass anglers in the world. “I’m still a little shocked,” said Frederick, whose previous best finish in FLW Tour competition was a 14th place finish on the Harris Chain of Lakes in 2017. “I didn’t think that I had as much weight as I did today. Some of the best fisherman on the planet were fishing in this event and to come out on top after four days – this is a dream come true.” Frederick caught his bass by targeting isolated reed clumps in Harney Pond. “I had a small limit, and I had missed a good one earlier, and I did not know whether to leave or to stay,” Frederick said. “I had to sit down for a minute and regain my composure and I decided to stick it out in that area. I had nothing else to go to, and that place had been special to me. With just 10 minutes left in the day, I caught a big one. It was a $100,000 fish.” Frederick’s “big one” was an 8-pounder. Frederick said all of his fish this week came on a pair of stickbaits – a Strike King Ocho (black with blue flake or black with blue tail) and a Strike King Shim-E-Stick (black with blue flake or black with blue tail) – and a Strike King Pure Poison Swim Jig (green-pumpkin) with a Rage Bug trailer. “I think the keys for me this week were my Power-Poles, my Florida knowledge, and patience,” Frederick said. “It would have been near impossible for me to fish some of the areas that I did this week if I wouldn’t have been able to pole down. And when I would first pull up to a spot, I would target the key areas. Sometimes it took multiple casts and fishing extremely slow, but every fish that I caught were in those key areas.” Complete results for the entire field can be found at FLWFishing. com.

pring is around the corner, and a lot of fishermen who hang up their gear for the winter can’t wait for the temps to rise. Although the enthusiasm is high, spring can be a difficult season to successfully pattern and consistently catch fish inshore. Most fish are still in transition between the deep mud and the shallow sand and grass flats, which has them spread out through the bays. Add high winds, cool fronts, the small size of the forage, and you have a tougher puzzle to put together than the other three Photo courtesy of Controlled seasons. I have put together Descent Lures a few tips to help you sort though this maze and hopefully land a few more fish this spring. First and foremost, the size of the baitfish is extremely small this time of year. It is not uncommon to find dozens of small glass minnows in the bellies of trout and reds in spring. This makes my first tip very obvious. Downsize your lure presentation if you can. Obviously, this can impact one’s casting abilities, so rigging small lures in tandem can be a plus and increase casting distance. Something else I like to use in the spring is a clear or transparent lure with some glitter or maybe one with a light translucent color. I choose these because it’s more difficult for the fish to see its actual size and gives the appearance of being smaller than it actually is. I’ve found this to be a productive alternative to downsizing my lure. While choosing a typical size trout and red lure for this application, I look for one with subtle movements. I like either a darting-style bait or a very subtle vibrating paddle lure. Strong, big vibrating tails have their place, but early spring is not one of them. One thing I notice about schools of small baitfish is that when they are displaced they seldom dart deeper before quickly regrouping. Most of their movement is to the side and up. Due to this characteristic, I also like a light lure that has a slow sink rate. I feel this imitates the spring forage movements and increases my strikes. I like a lure you can twitch from side to side that doesn’t sink very fast on the pause. In early spring while the fish are in transition, they will start to congregate on sandy shores with grass. This will be the main cover for the small fry. While employing these techniques and lure choices, concentrate your efforts on broken grass flats with potholes and distinct edges. Early in the season, areas like these near deeper water is where I would start. I hope you find these tactics helpful. “F
ish happy my friends.” Those are the words James “Docky” Smith wrote when he autographed his new book, “Through a Guide’s Eye.” Ironically, he wrote them when happiness and fishing were words I couldn’t say in the same breath. That wasn’t always the case. I love everything about bonefishing so passionately that my husband and I decided to buy a house in the Bahamas after fishing five days straight with Docky Smith. It was not a difficult decision. Out on the flats, one is lured into a Zen-like tranquility surrounded by miles and miles of every shade of aqua marine. Gin clear waters
reveal a buffet of ocean life, starfish, conch, stingrays, turtles, crabs… everything but bonefish. To the unpracticed eye, they are “ghosts.” Their silvery, translucent scales seamlessly blend with the white sands below. For Docky, however, spotting them is a “piece of cake.” I have never known anyone with more extraordinary eyesight. When fishing with Docky, one of the most challenging aspects of bonefishing is served up on plate. Poling the flats, the quiet is punctuated by the gentle shifting of the pole and the eerie wail of the mangroves. I am poised with fly rod in hand, and Docky will say, “Okay get ready for me now.” My body tenses with anticipation. “10 o’clock, 30 feet out,” Docky says. “Oh please, let this be a good cast, not one that flops down or gets carried in the wind or worse, ends up in my bun,” I think. I cast, not great but good enough for Docky to say, “Now strip slowly.” Then… his magic words: “Set it.” The fish takes off like a rocket, draining your reel of line, and every thrilling moment vibrates in your hand. That is fishing happy. It doesn’t always transpire like that. Sometimes the fish elude you, sometimes they spook, or sometimes you can’t get your fly in front of them. But I still love it and come back year after year. Last fall I was out with Docky wading. The fish were in range. I cast and cast, but I wasn’t casting! I’d invented a whole other movement that couldn’t have been more wrong. It was such a bad feeling. I stepped aside for my husband, and he pulled out three from the school. I went home with my tail between my legs. I was angry and disgusted. We returned to Long Island six weeks later, and the gloom of my previous pathetic performance still lingered. “Fish happy. Fish happy. Fish happy.” All of a sudden it came back to me. Docky had me casting correctly in less than five minutes. Moments later, I was hooked up with a gorgeous Bahamas bonefish. fter a launch at their recent January show, Surf Expo will be expanding the new Bluewater section in the upcoming Sept. 6-8 show in Orlando. Bluewater showcases inshore and offshore apparel and accessory companies. The January show was anchored by outdoor industry company leaders Yeti, Salt Life and Bimini Bay.
“One of the ideas behind Bluewater was to centralize our saltwater apparel and accessory exhibitors to make them easier to find for the buyers who come to the show,” said Surf Expo Show Director Roy Turner. “The response from both attendees and exhibitors was resounding approval.” “It’s a brand new section and it’s perfect for us. It fits our lifestyle,” Jeff Stillwell, president of Salt Life said about the Bluewater section. “Everything we do is connected to the water. “W
hen is the best time to fish?” has to be the most common question I am asked as a captain in the Florida Keys. Any time of the year can be the best time of year depending on what you’re looking for. The constantly changing weather and the different fishing it provides is what makes fishing here very special. All in the same day, you can cast at large fish in inches of water and feed baits to legendary deep-water gamefish. Having an open mind, being properly informed and preparing in advance are the keys to ensuring a fishing trip to the Keys is the adventure of a lifetime. First you have to determine your priorities. Are you looking to catch fish to eat, like tasty grouper? Are you looking to target legendary catchand-release gamefish, such as the mighty tarpon? Is there a particular time of year you want to fish and target the best bite, or is there a particular species to cross off your bucket list? The Keys are completely surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The two are connected by a complex system of channels that snake between the islands. The inshore scene is dominated by the “slam,” or tarpon, permit and bonefish. Methods for targeting these fish include sight fishing in shallow water or drifting the edges of deep-water channels. Unusually warm weather in winter can create short windows of incredible fishing, but north winds shut these species down. Early bites in late February to March can be red hot. They can be the best bite of the year, especially for trophy fish with a fly rod. However, if your trip occurs during a cold snap, fishing can get real tough. Summer and early fall have the most consistent weather. It is prime time for targeting bonefish and small tarpon. These smaller fish are more aggressive and are a great way to break into the sport.

If you desire a short run to the open ocean, the Florida Keys are also the place for you. Most fishing occurs within a mile of the reef line, which is only about 7 miles offshore. In addition to catch-andrelease billfish, many tasty species inhabit these waters, such as blackfin tuna, cobia, king mackerel, wahoo and dolphin. The “season” for these fish starts in the fall, when cooling waters push bait into the area. Big-time gamefish can be seen blowing up baits in as little as 15 feet of water, offering a unique sight fishing opportunity. Once the water heats up, you get the spring migration. When Gulf Stream currents push in close to the reef, fish move in to feast as they work toward summer spawning grounds. Whatever fish you crave, the Florida Keys has the trip for you. he 2018 season is in full swing in Nosara, Costa Rica. The five boats of the FishingNosara team have already run 225 trips since our season kicked-off in November, and show no signs of slowing down. As usual, the flagship Wanderer has led the charge with great action this season. One of our favorite anglers Leah Merryfield helped the Wanderer ring in the New Year with a great day of action on Jan. 1. Capt. William found a 40-plus-pound dorado lurking offshore, and Miss Merryfield was there to land the monster. Mate Johnny had his work cut out for him to filet this big green beast. With dinner on ice, Mike battled a big sailfish all the way in for the release. Filets for the table and another trophy release for the scrapbook… that’s a perfect day of fishing to kick off 2018. On Jan. 9, Soren and Marianne Dalberg-Pedersen had a big day with
Capt. William, highlighted by a pair of awesome marlin releases. They added a big dorado for the icebox, and all of this happened on just a fivehour, half-day trip! Our big battleship Discoverer also has been delivering big fish and big smiles. Our dear friend Jerome McKown continues to add to his FishingNosara Hall of Fame resume with a great day of action for his group on Feb. 1. After a sweet sailfish release, these Texas anglers scored a nice yellowfin tuna with a baitcaster reel he brought from home. Ryan McPherson joined Capt. Carlos and had the best five-hour trip you can imagine on Jan. 31. First up was a big blue marlin release. The blue water kept producing with an excellent sailfish backed up by a tasty yellowfin tuna. Our newest weapon, the 32-foot Eduardono mega-panga Harvester, has already redefined the potential of panga fishing in Central America. After three full days of fishing, angler Chuck Hanford saved the best for last with a mammoth roosterfish release on his final day of action on Feb. 5. This monster was a legitimate 60 pounds, proven by Captain Alex’s Bogagrip. Great work by the mega-panga to photograph and release this monster. Meanwhile, our smaller pangas, the Explorer and Adventurer, are delivering the best bang-for-your-buck fishing action in all of Central America. The Explorer put on a show for Maurycy Krzastek, of Poland, with a wonderful day of action on Jan. 12. The fish were fired-up as the Explorer released not one but two mighty marlins. This amazing feat was backedup with plenty of dorado, so these boys will be well fed. Great work by Capt. Fico! The Adventurer scored a swarm of permit, snappers and yellowfin tuna on Jan. 6. his is the time of year when crappie anglers flock to the water. The predictability and seemingly never-ending abundance of these tasty fish make them a springtime tradition with a community feel. No one’s going to fight you for crappie; there are plenty for everyone. Here are a few tips to help you load a cooler this spring. • Fish The Right Areas: This time of year, crappie are either shallow or thinking about moving shallow, depending on where you fish. With warming waters, the spring spawn will find them right up on the banks in water as shallow as 1 ½ feet. Explore backs of the creeks that feed reservoirs or the flats adjacent to creek channels. Crappie use those channels to travel in and out of their spawning areas, so they’ll be stacked up in shallow brush near those slightly deeper areas when they move up. They’ll be holding in those slightly deeper channels before and after the spawn. • Brush, Brush, Brush: The necessity for cover cannot be overstated. Crappie seek out hard bottoms with abundant cover to hide and

Laydowns on the bank, shallow docks, timber and brush stacked up by currents, angler-placed brush in shallow water, all of it will hold spawning crappie as long as there is firm bottom for them to build their nests and something to conceal them. • Tactics: Male crappie are usually the target when fishing during the spawn. Males are the ones that guard the beds, and while they are in protector mode they are aggressive. They are not necessarily feeding; they are attacking. Minnows under a float are the traditional bait for crappie fishing, and it is a tactic that works any time of year. But during the spawn, minnows can actually hurt your productivity because fishing them out of the livewell and hooking them up is time consuming. If they will take a jig, there is no reason not to use one. Jigs are just more efficient. This time of year, bright and gaudy colors are the way to go. Angry fish don’t need to be enticed into feeding, just getting their attention is often enough to make them strike. Whether you’re vertical jigging thick cover or casting to the banks, move quickly until you find crappie and then slow down to catch all of them that will bite. • Remember: When you find a good spot, mark it on the graph or remember where it is. Crappie know where to go to spawn successfully and comfortably. They will utilize the same areas year after year, and so should you. This holds true on a short-term basis also. Catch a limit one day, and you might think you’ve fished a particular bank out. Don’t count on it. Those good spawning sites reload. New fish will move in to take the place of the ones you took home to the fryer. That spot is worth checking again as early as tomorrow or even this afternoon.

FRESHWATER PUNCHING MATS

T
he first pro event of the 2018 Bassmaster schedule was the Bassmaster Eastern Open in Kissimmee, Fla. I love Florida in winter, and love it even more now. I finished the event in second place, my highest professional finish to date. To notch that result, I had to adapt. Here’s how I did it. In practice and early on day one I was catching fish on a prop bait. The fish were eating it, but I started catching smaller fish as time wore on. I knew big fish were in the area but weren’t willing to hit a topwater. They were buried in the cover, and I needed to go in after them. That meant punching the heavy mats. My arsenal for approaching the thickest Florida cover is simple but vital. I like to
use a MHX FP936 flipping stick with a 1 ½-ounce tungsten weight. I like a 4/0 Mustad 3X Grip Pin Max flipping hook, which helps keep a compact creature bait on the hook shank while penetrating abrasive cover. I pair it with 65-pound Vicious No Fade Braid to a high-speed reel to ensure I can muscle trophy fish from matted cover. A big key to punching heavy cover is the bait. It must have a compact shape to slip through the mats behind that big weight. I worked with X Zone Lures to create a new punching bait that does just that and is a new look for the fish. The Muscle Back Finesse Craw is the result. You can find them on the X Zone website (www.xzonelures.com). I relied on the Okeechobee Craw and Black/Blue Flake colors, which are both Florida staples.

What To Wear?
W
ho says you can’t have it all? When it comes to wetsuits—whether man or woman, warm or cold water, scuba or freediver—there are many great choices on the market. They are more comfortable, better-fitting, and more fashionable than ever. Pioneers in the dive world had to endure cold temperatures sometimes. Finally, in 1952, a University of California physicist invented the wetsuit. Water conducts heat away from the body about 20 times more efficiently than air, which is why an unprotected individual feels cold even in “warmish” water. The inventor created a foam-like material to cover the body, which reduced the water’s ability to conduct heat away from the body. This, plus the fact that water is warmed by your body and trapped inside the suit, made for a more comfortable experience. Previous materials were very fragile or very rigid. Due to product innovation, wetsuits are more flexible, warm, and come in many different colors—even camouflage patterns. Better-fitting designs and new methods of joining the seams make today’s suits even more waterproof and reduce “flushing,” which is the seeping in of cold water. In the warmest parts of the world, divers may opt for a simple “lycra skin” for protection from jellyfish, coral and sunburns. However, even in the summer, most will still wear at least a 2-mil wetsuit. On the other end of the scale, my very admirable friends in northern California wear two-piece 8-mil wetsuits complemented by thick neoprene boots, gloves and hoods. As an example, someone in the Bahamas might wear a skin for the summer and a 2-mil in the winter. Someone in Florida might own a 3-mil for the summer and a two-piece 5-mil for the winter. A Californian would probably own a two-piece 5-mil for the summer and 8-mil for winter.
The rule of thumb is that you want to wear the thinnest possible wetsuit, but enough to feel comfortable throughout the dive. That’s because you want to maintain maximum Photo by Jose Fernandez flexibility and reduce the amount of lead needed on your weight belt to submerge (wetsuit material is buoyant). The beauty of owning two-piece suits (hooded top and farmer john bottoms) is that you can switch pieces around for the perfect combination—such as wearing a 5-mil bottom with a 3-mil top. Along these lines, it’s also possible to buy a sleeveless vest for more layering options. With just a few basic pieces, many different combinations are available. This is especially handy if traveling and exact conditions are unknown or could change. The following brands are available at your local dive shop: Yazbeck, Mares, Riffe, Omer, Cressi and more. If an off-the-rack suit does not fit, there are several affordable custom manufacturers who will tailor one to your measurements, such as Polosub or Elios. ichael Clark’s 9.66-pound sheepshead might not be the biggest ever caught, but it’s the heaviest officially recognized sheep ever caught on a fly rod in Louisiana. Clark, of Charleston, S.C., and his father-in-law Craig Pagels booked a couple days with Louisiana Low Tide Charters and Capt. Lucas Bissett last January to fish the marshes of Delacroix. The big sheepshead came on the second afternoon of the trip. The day had dawned clear and calm, but when winds picked up in the afternoon it stirred up the mud bottom they were fishing. Capt. Bissett made the call to move in search of a sand bottom and clear water. It was a good call. Bissett spotted two sheepshead from the poling platform. “He told me to strip out all my line and said ‘four o’clock, four o’clock,’” Clark said. “I threw it out there and dropped it right on the shadow. Then I waited for what seemed like forever. Then I twitched it once and it took the fly.” The fish ate Bissett’s own pattern, a Bissett’s Mud Bug, which has a deer hair head and a baitfish profile. It was caught on a 10-weight Orvis Helios. The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA) recognized it as the fly-caught state record. The all-tackle LOWA record for sheepshead was caught in 1982 by Wayne Desselle. That one weighed 21.25 pounds.

pring temperatures can swing widely; the morning can start very cold with late season frontal passages, or strong winds with clouds or fog. Even warm days can feel cold due to the water’s ability to cool the near surface layer of air. However, those cold mornings can warm to hot afternoons and back to cold. First, start with a thermal layer that breathes well that can be worn on its own if it warms up. I prefer merino wool for this, but cotton thermals are fine as well if that’s your budget. The merino seems to wick and dry better and is comfortable in a wider range. Next comes a hoodie of some sort, whether that be heavy cotton, fleece or poly, and on your legs either poly sweats or jeans are usually enough for spring. The hoodie will be a welcome addition over your hat of choice at dawn, during high winds, or evening low-light conditions. The final layer should be some sort of windproof and waterproof layer. For wade fishing or rough water conditions, I like a pair of Simms fishing waders and a jacket. I can’t stress enough how important it is to block the wind and water on the top layer. Spring fishing brings variable conditions that require you to layer your clothes so you can adjust through the day. The mornings may be cold, but the mid afternoon leaves you peeling off clothes and sweating. You’ll be ready if you layer.
