he rising sun revealed unaddressed devastation as Capt. Randy Cnota backed his 22-foot Pathfinder down the ramp at Tyndall Airforce Base. Less than a year after Hurricane Michael rocked the Florida Panhandle, we launched near the heart of the destruction. Just east of Panama City and a short drive from the catastrophe that unfolded at Mexico Beach, this slice of the Panhandle is a community doggedly enduring the slow process of rebuilding. The bright boards of new framing show progress in neighborhoods of single-story homes. Blue-tarped roofs, shredded metal buildings and acres of tall pines snapped like so many twigs are reminders of just how far there is to go. At the docks, bare wood pilings and concrete footings are left from what was a bustling little marina before the storm surge. But the fish don’t care. And with an eager 8-year-old angler perched on the leaning post, Capt. Randy pointed us toward the open Gulf of Mexico. This was early July, during the Gulf red snapper season, and Capt. Randy’s numbers would take us a few miles out to some hard-bottom that promised big snapper. But first we had to catch bait, which was plentiful in the form of Spanish sardines balled up around the markers just outside the pass from St. Andrews Bay. The 8-year-old would have spent all day catching sardines on a Sabiki rig, but shortly we left the other boats jockeying for position at the marker. We had our bait, and Capt. Randy now had an idea of how the boy would handle his first fishing trip on the open ocean. The kid emitted enthusiasm, and it’s a good thing we didn’t make a several hour run. The waiting would have driven him mad. Bigger boats out of Panama City can comfortably take anglers dozens of miles out to deeper water, quick limits and huge fish, but this nearshore trip was more our speed. Less than 10 miles from the coast, and even inside the 9-mile state waters, there are wrecks, reefs and hard bottom in the 100-foot depths that offer plentiful bottomfish as well as shots at some big pelagics. Within minutes at our first drop, the boy was hooked up with a big bonito, and Capt. Randy was steering with one hand, while holding the butt of the rod with the other. The kid had a death grip on the handle and cranked with all his might. “You’re gonna have to come over here and make sure this rod doesn’t get pulled out!” Randy barked at me with both hands full. But I couldn’t. On the other side of the boat, I was pumping and grunting on what turned out to be a stud red snapper. Somehow, both

fish made it onto the deck, and Randy went right back to work feeding out a freelined sardine from the stern. “Where there’s Bonnies, there’s kings,” he called the shot. Shortly thereafter, he handed me a rod with line ripping off the spool. I came up tight on a good king mackerel. It was one of three kingfish we had on that morning, but it was the only one that made it in the boat. Through the morning, the fish kept us continuously busy. We caught more red snapper than we could keep track of as well as gag and red grouper. Capt. Randy was great with the kid. Seeing the big bottom rigs were too much for an 8-year-old, Randy tied up a chicken rig on a lighter rod, showed the boy how to bait and fish it and then set him loose. Although the beeliners we were hoping for didn’t show up, the boy had a field day hauling snapper and triggerfish off the bottom. He was particularly proud of an FWC-tagged trigger he caught. “Part of the fun is you never know what you’re going to catch when you’re out here,” said Randy as he unhooked a 2-foot-long smoothback pufferfish. The whole time out, we kept eyes peeled for weeds and surface activity that might belie the presence of mahi-mahi or cobia. In the week before our trip, Randy managed to put clients on a sailfish and a big blackfin tuna. Although we didn’t encounter these species, we did watch in awe as two 10-foot tiger sharks circled uncomfortably close to the boat. We went home with a cooler full of fish. But more importantly, while those meaty chunks of snapper sizzled in hot oil, the boy regaled his grandparents with stories of the trip. His first time was an experience he will never forget. Snapper seasons may be over along the Gulf Coast, but if you find yourself hankering for a good fishing trip that’s fun and easy, consider hiring a captain out of the Panama City area. Capt. Randy said fall brings better opportunities for sailfish and tuna nearshore, and with his smaller boat, he is also well equipped to fish inshore. The fall redfish and trout bite can be off the charts. These hurricane-battered communities remain in recovery, but the fish, beaches and visitor ammenities are still there. Go spend some time at Panama City and eastward along The Forgotten Coast. You’ll be glad you did, because the fishing is pretty spectacular. Capt. hy do people feel the need to head to remote destinations a million miles from nowhere to fish? Some of the best fishing opportunities exist right under our noses, and many times they are very close to major metropolitan areas. The Grand River is just such a place. Michigan’s largest river runs through the heart of the state’s second largest city, Grand Rapids, and offers great fishing through its 252-mile run from rural headwaters in Hillsdale County down to Lake Michigan. Downtown Grand Rapids: Home to more than 37 craft breweries, Grand Rapids is Beer City. But there is another side of Grand Rapids that few know about. It offers the

lure of big-river fishing in an urban environment. The river through downtown Grand Rapids offers the angler a unique opportunity to fish for steelhead in swift rapids beneath the city’s skyscrapers. On an early leg of their run up out of Lake Michigan, these fish are strong and as hot as they come. From October through December and again during March and April, droves of steelhead run through downtown as they migrate through and hold up in the rapids. Some of the best steelhead fishing lies between Sixth Street Dam and the Fulton Street Bridge. It’s not uncommon to see people wading the river, fishing from the banks or in boats landing these chrome bullets. When fishing here, the angler can expect to only move a few times to get on fish. Once you have your spot, you don’t want to move very much as it can be crowded at times. If you’re not on a fish right away, be patient. These fish get backed up at the dam and constantly move around in search of the fish ladder to pass through and continue their migration up the river. Lowell To Ada Section: Just minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, a roughly 10-mile stretch of the Grand River between the towns of Lowell and Ada offers fishing that is a little more secluded. From late spring through early fall, this section offers smallmouth bass and northern pike. There is little public access here, and the angler can expect solitude and no-pressure fishing in a remote river setting just outside Grand Rapids. A typical trip involves floating in a drift boat or jet boat from Lowell to Ada, covering a lot of water while casting to the banks, river timber and rocks. Bald eagles, osprey, blue heron and deer are common sights on this piece of river. Rarely will the angler lay eyes on another boat or fisherman. On the Grand River, one can enjoy spectacular fishing and then enjoy a cold beer and everything else the city has to offer. t may seem logical, but it’s not always right. My favorite example is George Westinghouse, the man who invented the air brake for oversized vehicles. Researchers relied on logical thinking and experimented continuously on using air to apply the brake. It didn’t work. Westinghouse took an opposite approach and used the air to hold the brake off the drum until the driver stepped on the brake pedal and released the air. The common approach to understanding fish behavior lies in applying human values with the assumption that a fish’s brain has the capacity to reason. Just because a particular lure looks good to us does not mean it’s a fish’s favorite, too. Few of us can boast even the slightest knowledge of the release that triggers a fish into striking or simply passing up an offering. And, we probably wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it. Repeated observations hold the key to helping us focus our efforts on techniques that have worked in the past. As an example, fish have an amazing alertness to movement. It can cause them to flee a situation or take advantage of it and feed. The same applies to underwater sound. Low frequency vibrations such as those that indicate a fish is in distress usually cause predators to investigate with the hope of finding food. The more natural a bait or lure appears to a fish, the greater the chance a strike will occur. When you can see your quarry

and observe hesitation of any type, assume that something in your offering appears unnatural. Fish may be curious, but they are seldom in the habit of wasting energy to pursue something needlessly. Many species have the ability to measure energy expended in chasing food against the value received. Because fish are creatures of habit, they tend to do the same things over and over. That’s why captains and guides boast the ability to find fish. The quarry may hold in one spot with uncanny precision day after day, month after month, and year after year. If that fish is caught or leaves for any reason, another will take its place. Those fish that work a tide follow the same pattern daily. Even offshore skippers understand reliable patterns that fish follow and troll the waters where their quarry should be. For some unknown reason, fish tend to hold at the same depth over a wide area. If another angler can tell you the depth where he found fish, you don’t need to know the precise spot. Keep in mind that water temperature can play a role. Each species has its upper and lower limits. As water temperature drops, fish tend to swim slower and chase an offering for shorter distances. Figuring out what motivates a fish to strike a bait or lure becomes a continuous challenge for leading anglers as well as the scientific community. The important thing to remember is that fish do not think like humans. Their basic approach is simple, yet it is not always easy to detect. The more you observe fish behavior and understand that it follows patterns and procedures established a long time ago, the more successful you are going to be.

REDBREAST SUNFISH?

t first glance, Alphonso Jackson’s 2-pound, 1-ounce redbreast sunfish might not seem all that impressive. But when you consider the size of your average redbreast, this thing is a monster. Jackson was fishing the Lumber River in central North Carolina’s Scotland County on June 10 when he caught the fish on a cricket. It bested a 36-yearold North Carolina state record for the species by 5 ounces. The previous record, caught in 1983 by Ronald Stanley in Big Swamp in Bladen County, N.C. weighed 1 pound, 12 ounces. Jackson’s fish also outweighs the world record. The current IGFA all-tackle world record for the species has stood at 1-pound, 12-ounces since 1984. That fish came from Florida’s Suwannee River. Wikipedia claims the heaviest redbreast on record weighed 2.3 pounds (2 pounds, 4.8 ounces), but there’s no information as to where that weight came from or whether it was angler-caught. So, if Jackson bothers to complete all the paperwork properly, he would definitely be the new IGFA record holder. Jackson, 43, is an avid fisherman, a passion he attributes to his father Johnny Jacobs who taught him how to fish when he was a boy, and one that he has passed on to his children, ages 23, 18 and 17. They were with him the day he caught the massive readbreast. “We started fishing in a pond but weren’t having any luck, so I said to my kids, ‘Let’s go back to where I learned how to fish.’ And this is what we caught,” Jackson said. “I’d like to thank my daddy for teaching me how to catch fish and where to catch fish.” COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

READ GRASS MATS FOR BIG BASS

ate summer and early fall absolutely scream for a frog. With big bass holed up in thick vegetation, working a frog across grass mats can lead to some of the most explosive strikes in fishing. I always look forward to the frog pattern setting up around this time of year. This year should be especially sweet because of the reemergence of Alabama’s Lake Guntersville as one of the best bass fisheries in the nation. This Tennessee River impoundment is frog fishing heaven. Over the last decade the Guntersville bass fishery saw a bit of a decline. But the “Big G” has come back in a big way. Bassmaster ranked Guntersville the No. 2 fishery in the nation in this year’s “100 Best Bass Lakes” listings. It is fishing lights-out, with five-fish tournament sacks regularly approaching and surpassing 30 pounds. I just came off a top-10 finish in the June Elite Series event on Guntersville. Some fish came off frogs, but the best patterns I found were deep cranking and worms. You can bet the frog bite will ramp up soon, though. No matter where you fish, the key to topwater frog fishing is reading the grass. To really dial in a pattern, you need to observe what’s happening on the lake. At Guntersville, the two prominent grass types are hydrilla and milfoil. There are other types, but these are the two you will encounter

most often. From the time the grass first tops out in the summer until the first frost of the fall, I will concentrate on milfoil. Milfoil creates a great canopy and is hollow underneath, so the bass can get through it to get to your frog. When the hydrilla is still green, it is so thick that a bass has trouble seeing your frog on top of the mat. With that said, later on in the fall when the hydrilla starts to turn brown and break up, it starts to get hollow underneath. That is the time to start targeting it more. Another key to frog fishing is to listen and watch for “active” grass. Bass school up in grass mats just like they do on ledges, points and humps, so it is important to find a mat that has activity in it. Listen for bluegill popping the mat or watch for shad to flicker. Those are signs that bass are not far away. Also, look for points, turns and indentions in the mat itself. Anything different will often hold bass. Rod selection is important for hauling bass out of matted grass. I throw a MHX-MB-874. This rod is 7’3” heavy power with plenty of backbone, but more importantly it has enough action in the tip to allow the fish to eat the bait. I use 50-pound Vicious braid and a 7:1:1 reel. Try a topwater frog on your next trip out, or better yet plan an excursion to Guntersville for the trip of a lifetime.

Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit & Education Available Online

The education and permit requirements also apply if you plan to fish from shore for any species of fish with tactics and tackle including: • fishing with a metal leader more than 4 feet long • Using a fighting belt/harness • Deploying bait by any means other than casting (kayaking for example) while using a hook that is 1.5 inches or larger at its widest inside distance OTHER REGULATION CHANGES:

• Prohibit of chumming when fishing for any species from the beach. • Require immediate release of prohibited shark species when fishing from the shore and require anglers to cut the leader or hook to prevent delaying release of prohibited species. • Require that prohibited shark species remain in the water (when fishing from shore or from a vessel). • Require the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks to target or harvest sharks when using live or dead natural bait (when fishing from shore and from a vessel). • Require the possession/use of a device capable of quickly cutting the leader or hook when targeting sharks (when fishing from shore or a vessel). These rules are intended to increase survival of released sharks, improve information-gathering from the fishery and address public safety concerns.

FLORIDA LOBSTER SEASON

he beginning of Florida lobster season gets many divers more excited than kids at Christmas. Barely able to sleep, the divers nestle all snug in their beds, while visions of lobster dance in their heads. Whether locals or out-of-state visitors, many arrange their vacation plans around this special time, either during the two-day mini-season or the actual start of lobster season on Aug. 6. Mini season falls on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, while the regular season is Aug. 6 to March 31. Some will brave the two-day mini season, when tourists descend on the state, and some simply wait until Aug. 6 when things calm down. The most popular destination in Florida is The Keys, where shallow warm waters provide great breeding grounds and easy dives. However, the east coast from Miami to Jupiter and beyond can also be popular and productive destinations. Generally speaking, the farther north you go, the farther out and deeper you will need to dive, but you can also be rewarded with larger lobsters. The biggest challenge is finding lobster spots. Divers who find good spots tend to go back to them year after year and, understandably, don’t like to share their locations. However, there are

plenty of charter boats that specialize in taking new divers or tourists to productive spots. What you need to know: 1) A recreational saltwater fishing license and a spiny lobster permit are required to harvest spiny lobsters. Information is available online at MyFWC.com. 2) The recreational limit for spiny lobster is six per person, and the carapace must be longer than 3 inches. By law, it must be measured in the water. Possession and use of a measuring device are required at all times. You can google “how to measure a lobster” to be sure you are doing it correctly. 3) The possession of egg-bearing lobster is prohibited. Egg-bearing lobsters have hundreds of orange eggs that are easily visible and attached under the tail. While most lobsters have completed reproduction by the start of season, some still have eggs in August and beyond. 4) Do not take lobsters using any device which could puncture, penetrate or crush the lobster. The most common methods are the net and tickle stick combination or the looper. There are plenty of videos online to show you how to use each method. 5) Lobsters must be landed in whole condition. Separating the tail from the body is prohibited in state waters, so bring a cooler large enough to hold the entire catch until you reach land. 6) Although most people wring/twist the tail, it’s possible to get more meat by cooking the whole lobster. 69.3-pound flathead catfish was recently certified as a new Florida state record. Measuring 47 inches long, with a girth of 34.25 inches, the monster Yellow River flathead bested the old record of 63.8 pounds. The angler, Marvin Griffin, of Santa Rosa County, is no stranger to the Yellow River or huge catfish. Griffin’s family has been fishing the Yellow River for years and they have caught exceptionally large catfish there. Griffin’s uncle, James Auston Jr., caught a state record flathead catfish in the Yellow River, which held the record from 2011 until 2016. “I have always wanted to catch a state reFWC Photo cord,” said Griffin. “After my uncle caught his, I made it a mission of mine to catch my own. “I wasn’t expecting to catch a state record when I started fishing that day with John Babb. But, it was the first and only fish we caught that day. I never would have been able to bring the fish into the boat without his help.” Flathead catfish are a non-native fish found in many northwest Florida panhandle river systems. Flatheads prefer long, slow-flowing, moderately turbid rivers. Their solitary lifestyle makes them more difficult to catch than other catfish. Adult flathead catfish feed primarily on live fish, crawfish, freshwater clams and mussels. To properly certify a new Florida state record, an FWC biologist must identify the fish species and witness its weighing on a certified scale. Anglers can check the current state records at BigCatchFlorida.com by clicking on “State Record,” and should notify the nearest FWC regional office if they believe they have caught a record fish. he 26th Annual Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s Blue Water Open Charity Oﬀshore Fishing Tournament was held June 1, with tournament headquarters at Capt. Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian, Fla. It was a beautiful weekend with a thunderstorm threat that fortunately passed with just a light drizzle. The field was competitive, with135 boats registered and 58 boats weighing in ﬁsh.

The event included dolphin, kingfish, wahoo and grouper on the main board and bonus board. The total purse was a guaranteed $20,000, which included $1,000 each for the biggest amberjack and yellowfin tuna, as well as $2,500 for Top Boat. The catch was dominated by kingfish, with the biggest king weighing 51.29 lbs., caught aboard Easy Drinkin’. To round out the board for kingfish, second place weighed 37.46 lbs., caught on Wet Rods; third place was 35.06 lbs., caught on Knot Scared; and fourth place was 34.41 lbs.; caught on Slab Grabber. First-place dolphin was 29.79 lbs., by Bottoms Up; second place was 23.22 lbs., by Reel Twisted; third place was 22.68 lbs., by Risky Business; and fourth place was 22.37 lbs., by Team Shoot Out. Top wahoo was a big 50.61 lbs., caught on Far Side, with Capt. Jeff Driscoll. No other wahoo made it to the scales. First-place grouper was 22.27 lbs., by On The Rocks; second place was 18.48 lbs., by Smooth Finish; third place was 17.45 lbs, by Reef Affliction; and fourth place was 16.54 lbs., by Pura Vida. Top Boat went to Far Side. The Top Boat award is based on an aggregate weight of three fish in at least two of the main-board categories. Far Side weighed in a total of 97.71 lbs., with the top wahoo, a 21.65-lb. dolphin, a 21.20-lb. dolphin as well as a 25.45-lb. kingfish and an 18.87-lb. kingfish. The $1,000 Top amberjack award weighed in at 43.12 lbs. It was caught by Out For Fun, captained by James Kahn. No yellowfin tuna were weighed in. On top of the $20,000 purse, there was the Capt. William Charles Memorial Largest Grouper award of $1,000, donated by Carol Knapstein. This year, the award went to On The Rocks Captain Josh HUff, with a 22.27-lb. grouper. Our winning Lady Angler was Dina Strickland on Slab Grabber with a 26.42-lb. kingfish. The Junior Angler winner was Owen Zierer, fishing aboard Reel Twisted, with a 23.22-lb. dolphin. TIPS AND TECHNIQUES FOR WADING THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON

ne of the best ways to catch fish in the Indian River Lagoon is wading. I’m not the only local fisherman to recommend it; Mark Nichols, founder of DOA lures, recognizes wading as a top method also. The advantages are obvious: you can fish shallow mangroves and docks better; you can be in the same environment as the fish and not disturb them with a boat and motor; and it’s easier to maneuver hooked fish around pier pilings. Here are some considerations before you set off on foot into the lagoon. Although I used to fish with tennis shoes and shorts, chest waders are recommended for local wading because of the changing water quality. Waders also protect you from submerged dangers. There are two types of chest waders, stockingfoot and those with attached boots. I use the stockingfoot type and wear a pair of boots over them. Keep in mind, boots worn over neoprene stockingfeet must be at least a full size bigger than your regular shoes. A longer 10-foot rod is best to get more distance on your casts. You need a good inshore spinning reel, a 3000 or 4000 series, which will be spooled with braided line. Use light or white line for visibility. I use 6- to 10-pound braid, which is easier to cast and heavy enough to land most fish. You won’t be able to land medium-sized tarpon or horse large snook from under piers with light braided line, so if you are fishing for these species you’ll want to upgrade your line. Tied to the end of the braided line with a double uni knot is a 2-foot length of fluorocarbon leader. Tie your lure to the fluorocarbon with a standard loop knot. For instructions on tying these two knots, run a search for them online. Make sure to bring pliers, extra lures, jig heads and leaders, since you will likely break off several times during a wade. Summer is a good time to use topwater lures. I also use jigs and shallow-running crankbaits as search lures. The fish feed more at night, in the early morning and at dusk when water temperatures drop. I prefer fishing in the morning or evening after a high tide, when fish move shallow on the shoreline, mangroves and piers. Fishing at night is easiest around lighted bridges. Fish the shadow lines with a crankbait, topwater or heavier jig, since the current under bridges is stronger. I like the two large bridges in Stuart and usually wade the northeast section of the southern bridge, officially known as the Earnest Lyons bridge. There are many great areas to wade. Some of my favorites are Walton Road (PSL), Midway Road (Ft. Pierce) and Harbor branch (Vero). On the east side, try Herman’s Bay (Stuart) or Bear Point (Ft. Pierce). when registering or re-registering a vehicle or boat at local tax collector’s offices across the state. “When someone purchases a manatee or sea turtle decal and displays it, they’re not only contributing financially to conservation,” said Carol Knox, who leads the FWC’s Imperiled Species Management Section. “They’re raising awareness about these species and specific issues they face. It’s a simple way to make a difference for Florida wildlife.” Over 6,000 manatees swim in the state’s coastal waters, rivers and freshwater springs, and about 20,000 sea turtles nest each year on Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf coast beaches. The decals help fund manatee and sea turtle conservation efforts. For example, when someone calls the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888404-FWCC (3922) to report an injured, entangled or sick manatee or sea turtle, FWC staff works with partners to respond and rescue the animal. The decals also spotlight important conservation issues: • The “Warm Water Saves laptops, water bottles and coolers throughout the state. Get yours Manatees” decal shows several

New manatee and sea turtle decals coming to a bumper near you! The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), has unveiled its new 2019 manatee and sea turtle decals. These high-quality stickers, featuring beautiful original artwork, are a fun way for people to support the research, rescue and management efforts that conserve these species and spread the word about the challenges they face. Every July, the FWC introduces new manatee and sea turtle decals that are available with a $5 donation. The waterproof decals are designed to look good on a vehicle’s bumper or the side of a boat, and they can also be found on

manatees gathering in a spring. Florida manatees require warmwater refuges to survive the winter months. Manatees cannot endure water temperatures below 68 degrees, so warm waters are critical for their survival. • The “Keep on Swimming” sea turtle decal shows a Kemp’s ridley hatchling. Kemp’s ridleys are the world’s rarest sea turtle. They rarely nest in Florida, but many of them spend most of their lives in Florida waters. Marine debris can have a big impact on Florida’s sea turtles, so make a difference by keeping our beaches clean. rapping summer up, August is usually a transition month as our offshore waters push 90°. Lucky for us, it’s not all about fishing this month. Lobster season starts August 6th and our fingers are crossed for pollutant free waters that we can surf, swim, SUP and dive in. As I’m writing this, there are currently reports of blue green algae making its way from Lake Okeechobee to our St. Lucie Inlet. This has been a recurring and worsening problem for many years now and my fingers are crossed, hoping that we don’t have another “lost summer.” Aside from the algae putting a damper on the inshore and nearshore activities, the offshore fisheries maintain to be almost as good as can be expected.

With water being so hot, focusing deeper where the water is cooler will often pay off during the hot summer days. If you don’t already own a downrigger for pulling your teasers, now is the time to get one to use it for what it’s intended for. Cannon’s (10 TS downrigger) oscillates, triggering lazy fish to bite reactively. You can fish one or two baits from each downrigger, and I recommend anywhere from 30 feet down, to the bottom. I like to fish my down bait close to where the thermocline is. You can sometimes mark it on your sonar. I just got new electronics and went with the Humminbird Solix series.

Aside from having the side scan sonar, which is amazing near wrecks, reefs, the beach and especially catching bait, this unit has such definition that it not only marks the obvious fish and structure but shows the sub-surface temperature beak so much clearer. August is also a great time to take advantage of the calm weather and cover some ground or water in this case. Run and gun styles of fishing, tuna trips, bahamas runs, and my favorite of all, swordfishing are all great options this last month of summer. Over the last 15 years, daytime swordfishing has become extremely popular, primarily for one reason, it works!

Targeting these fish from 1000 to 2000 feet down with squid, eels, strip and belly bates can give you and your guests food for a year and memories that will last a lifetime. This style of fishing has been primarily an electric reel game, but over the last few years with developments in line, rods and reels, we’ve caught some nice fish conventionally too. Either way, not many people get to see these unicorns and each one is such a special experience. If you’re looking to check one of these beasts off your bucket list, or do anything any else exciting this summer, please give me a call, I hope your next fishing trip is Off The Chain!

Many species of snapper, including lane, vermilion, mangrove (gray), and mutton, will be into their yearly spawning period this month. These members of the snapper family will populate an expansive swath of Martin County’s reef system from 50 to 180 feet of water, allowing anglers to dial in a daily fishing strategy that best suits individual tastes and abilities. The snook bite has been great with big females caught on live greenies and croakers inside and outside the inlet close to shore. The big tarpon are cruising the beaches early morning and can be caught on live mullet and greenies. As we get closer to September, it's time to start gearing up for the "mullet run." Make sure you have a good cast net, plenty of 4/0-6/0 hooks, and 40-to-60-pound fluorocarbon leader. Snapper ‘grand slams’ will be a highly achievable feat during offshore bottom fishing outings this month, as these members of the snapper family coexist at similar reef sites and will fall prey to similar baits and tackle presentations. All varieties of cut bait, including squid, grunts, bonito, sardines, and ballyhoo to name a few, will result in snapper catching success. Chicken rigs and single hook, straight leader rigs will suffice for bait delivery options to these tasty bottom dwellers. Large cut baits and live baits presented at the end of longer (20 to 70 feet) straight leaders will produce a snapper bite from larger representatives of the mutton and mangrove species at these same reef locations. Besides a flavorful selection of snapper as fish targets, anglers will continue to be able to catch and keep grouper this month. Grouper will also be found right alongside schools of spawning snapper at these same reef outcroppings, making a bottom fishing strategy for a day’s outing, a highly desirable option. Barring any tropical weather systems, August will host relatively, user-friendly sea conditions and allow fishing crews to explore their near coastal fishing zone. As in all summer months, fishing teams must maintain a healthy concern for thunderstorm activity and shape their trips accordingly. So, in August, stock the boat up with plenty of lead and cut bait and target the many species of bottom fish that will provide both naturally occurring sport and “salty groceries” for the anglers of Martin County.

and plan your fishing for early mornings or late evenings for best results. Enjoy fishing in August! Trout, snapper and redfish will be the best opportunities this month. Get your favorite top water lures ready for some good trout action on the flats. Follow up with a D.O.A. C.A.L. jerk bait as the sun rises on a light jig head. Water quality has been good so far this year and you can find plenty of grass flats to fish. Harbor Branch, Queen’s Cove and Bear Point have all been productive so far this year. Look for snapper and redfish around docks and mangroves. Live bait or a D.O.A. shrimp can help you find a nice slot redfish in August. It has been a good summer for redfish already. Tarpon will be moving into the river along with many other species. Look around the turning basin for the tarpon action with live bait or a D.O.A. TerrorEyz. Baitfish are plentiful, and the availability of live bait (shiners, goggle eyes, and pilchards) give the summertime anglers an added advantage. The words “cold water upwelling” make any angler cringe, and the presence of cold sea beds will pester anglers once again in the late summer months. We expect to see a thermocline, or cold-water upwelling, that will cause some changes in the bottom fishing bite. The upwellings are nutrientrich and bring both positive and negative changes to the snapper and reef fish game. On the up-side, cold water pushes the cobia to the surface which makes for great

targeting, catch and dinner. On the flip-side is the snapper bite. The cold water is known to cause the snappers to take on a “lock jaw” attitude. Thankfully, we know of a few tricks to fight off the "lock-jaw" and keep the snappers biting. Safety first is key as boat traffic increases over the summer. Lobster season draws in many crustacean crazed divers, so keep a close eye out for dive flags. Take some time to brush up on the general boating rules for safer boating and show due diligence when protecting and hydrating yourself. The intense sun and heat can drain both mentally and physically. With lobster season open, the reef bite on, and schools out, we see August to be filled with great catches! nshore fishing should be red hot for trout and redfish on the flats both to the north and south in the river. First light and just before dark will be the best times. For trout, try using live baits like a pilchard or a pigfish and fish them under a popping cork. Also try an artificial bait like a D.O.A. Bait Buster or some other top water bait. Use the natural colored baits. Later

ugust has arrived and will bring very warm temperatures, both in the air and on the surface of the Atlantic waters. Bottom fishing will be the way to go to get the most rod bending action but keep a lookout for a nice cobia that might be lurking around your boat. Usually the bottom temperatures will still be cooler in the deeper depths, which can push the cobia to the surface. This time of year is a great time for catching a lot of bottom species, such as a variety of snapper, trigger fish and sea bass. There are numerous areas to target these bottom species off the Treasure Coast from the beach

to 150 feet depths and beyond. If you are new to the area and don’t know where these areas are, pick up a chart, available at any tackle shop. Also be sure to pick up the latest fishing regulations for size and quantity limits for the area you are fishing. Be sure to vent the fish if you are fishing

in deeper waters before releasing any non-keepers. When on the water, look for structure on the bottom, and if there is bait marking on the structure that is a plus. Anchor up near the area and get to catching. Bottom species will eat almost any live or cut bait that

is offered to them, such as sardines, squid and chunked grunt. Trigger fish, lane snapper and mangrove snapper will be relatively close to the structure. Mutton snapper will be a bit away from the structure waiting in the sand. The terminal tackles used to present your bait will be the most important. You will want to use just enough weight to get your bait to the bottom. I prefer a four-to-fivefeet piece of 30-pound fluorocarbon leader; it is thinner than mono line and more abrasive resistant. I prefer a 2-3-O-size hook to not be seen. Braid main line is preferred by most for bottom fishing as it helps you feel lighter bites and does not stretch. To beat the heat, fishing at night is a great thing and it is also harder for the fish to see your tackle. Please remember August is the start of lobster season so please keep your distance from divers and hopefully they will respect your area as well. There is a lot of ocean out there for all of us. Get out on the water, catch some fish, have fun and be careful!

River – The north fork of the Sebastian River is usually the place to look for tarpon in the early morning and evening. Flies, plugs, D.O.A. Root Beer TerrorEyz and finger mullet when they become available will all catch these backwater tarpon. Mayan cichlids have found their way into the Sebastian River system. They hit small jigs and plugs around cover and fight well. Rumor has it they are also fine table fare so if you catch something that looks like an oversized sunfish it is likely a cichlid and you would be doing the native species a favor by taking it home for dinner.

Night fishing can also be great, whether you drift through the bridge with live bait, or cast plugs, bucktails or soft plastic swimbaits from the rocks. Catch and release is the law until September 1, so please handle the snook with care. Bull reds will take up feeding positions throughout the inlet on outgoing tides. a ride on the outgoing tides, big reds can be seen slurping them off the surface all along the inlet channel. Topwater plugs, poppers, crab flies and live crabs properly placed will do the trick.

Indian River Lagoon – Trout

and redfish are available early and late for anglers using topwater plugs and jerk baits on the flats. Find where the baitfish are concentrated, and the predators won’t be far away. Live pigfish, jigs and suspending plugs will catch trout in deeper pockets and drop-offs throughout the day.

Better numbers of snook in the lagoon have made fishing around docks and shorelines a great way to bend a rod this summer. Skipping D.O.A. Shrimp and jerk baits under cover will produce violent strikes from linesiders of all sizes. You may also find a fair number of trout, redfish and mangrove snapper in the same areas taking advantage of the shade. Residential canals are a good place to look for juvenile tarpon and snook. Small jigs and plugs fished on a medium action rod with 10-pound braid will do the trick.

Near Shore Atlantic –

August should find king mackerel, bonito, and the occasional cobia within a few miles of the beach, as long as the ocean remains calm and clean. Tarpon will also be a possibility over the reefs just off the beach, weather permitting. As mullet and other baitfish begin their southern trek late in the month, the near-shore can come alive. Big tarpon, king and Spanish mackerel, sharks, snook, jacks, and the like, all chase the bait south. The mullet schools tend to stay within surf casting distance of the beach, so surfcasting for fish weighing in the double- and even triple-digits is possible. Tight lines!

ugust is a great time to get out on the flat seas and enjoy some offshore fishing. Cobia, dolphin, sailfish, snapper, kingfish and grouper are all in play this month. The cobia run seems to coincide with the cold-water upwelling that occurs unpredictably in the summer. When there is cold-water on the bottom, the cobia will rise to the surface and perhaps move towards the beaches. Look for the fish cruising along the 60 foot and 90 foot reefs or any inshore weed lines. Have your favorite cobia bucktail or a good-sized swimbait ready to cast. If that doesn’t do the trick, follow up with a whole squid or a chunk of fresh cut bait. If you’re lucky enough to find the reef holding giant bull sharks, the cobia will be with them. This mass of fish will show easily on your depth finder and may include other species like amberjack. Try sending a jig down and test the bite. Anchoring up and chumming

these areas will produce some great action. Mangrove and red snapper will be fair game too in the chum lines this month. For the mangroves during daylight, use less than 30-pound flourocarbon leaders and bury that hook. Freeline the bait as natural as possible for these smart rascals. Trolling this month can be hot too. We get a lot of pelagics in as close as 50 feet this time of year, but 50-foot

depths aren’t just for kings this time of year; dolphin, sails, barracuda and even cobia will jump on a trolled bait. Try putting more naked ballyhoo in the spread when the water is calm and blue. I think a “sneakier” presentation is necessary under these conditions with less need for flashy

trolling feathers and bubblers. Near the end of August, the first of the mullet run starts. Run the beach and look for big boy tarpon showering the mullet. An artificial will draw a strike when they’re fired up but a live mullet on a big circle hook will seal the deal. Use at least

seven-feet of 60-pound leader and a rod with backbone. Great fighting blacktips and spinner shark will be in the mix too. Snook will be on the beach near the mullet pods also. First light and afternoon dark clouds are good times to get into some hot action.

ugust's fishing forecast can be hot for the land fisherman. August is one of the only months that the land angler can target the silver king, also known as the tarpon. In south Florida, we do have resident tarpon throughout the year but during the late summer we have migrating fish moving up and down our coast. August can be prime tarpon fishing. Walking the beaches in the morning and evenings and going to some of your local bridges at night will be just some of the places you will find tarpon. At bridges, use a big live mullet or big seven-inch to nine-inch swim baits. Along beaches, it can be a totally different ball game. Some days the fish will be focused on a two-inch

bait fish like silversides or greenies. It can be very hard to use these small baits to catch these large fish, but with the right tackle and the right technique, it is very possible. When a tarpon is a leaping out of the water, always remember to bow to the fish. This is something that you don't normally do but because the fish is so powerful and strong you have to create slack in your line, or the fish will bust off every time. An eight-foot spinning rod

If you are looking for a mahi dinner make the run four to eight miles out looking for weedlines. Plan your launch and take out spots as the current will most likely push you 10-to-20 miles from your launch spot. I like to launch at Boca Raton Inlet and drift to Palm Beach Inlet on these long-range trips. Trolling a daisy chain or pilchards will help put a fish in the kayak. Most will be small, but there are chances for a big bull.

It Doesn’t Matter!

hether it is saltwater or fresh water, there is nothing better than fishing top water. Seeing fish chasing and taking the fly is just hard to beat! Here along the Treasure Coast we have great opportunities to use this technique especially during the spring, summer and fall. No matter what we chase, we always have one 10-weight or 12-weight rod ready to go on the boat. I’ve learned from experience that these preparations enable quick action should situations shift and it allows for added opportunities.

Tackle recommendations:

• Fly rod: 8 foot – 9 foot / 10-weight or 12-weight rod. • Fly line: One with a powerful taper to turn over these bulky flies (SA Big Water Int.). in floating or even better in intermediate

(preferred!). With the intermediate line the popper will stick better to the water and will fish better. • Fly reel: A lot of backing and a strong drag (Nautilus CCF X2 or NV-G). • Leader: Recommend 5-to-6 foot, 30-to-60-pound, sometimes with 80-pound shock or wire depending on the situation. • Flies: Poppers in sizes 1 – 9/0 and be sure to use strong hooks like AKI from Owner or O’Shaughnessy Bait from Mustad. Truth be told there might be some situations where it is smart to use a popper less aggressively or fish with a gurgler. However, in most cases you want to make some real noise to get the attention of the fish. Use a long arm to give you more stripping room, keep the rod tip down right above the water while stripping. usually a short and hard strip to keep the fly in the zone as long as possible or a long, fast and hard strip to move the fly quickly. This month’s casting tip: When making forward and back casts, practice keeping your rod tip in a straight line regardless of your rod angle (straight or side). Learn to cast without looking back at your back

rom a diver’s perspective, August on the Treasure Coast is an exciting time of year to be in the water because lobster season opens August 6, grouper and hogfish seasons continue to remain open and conditions are reliably clear both near and offshore. Many locals who skipped the rush of mini-season may time their first dive trip in August to coincide with opening day of lobster season. Since grouper and hogfish seasons are both open, buddy teams may consider each taking a different role on the dive to increase the odds of success and not to get too overloaded with equipment. For example, one diver has lobster and lionfish supplies and the other carries the speargun and fish stringer. This way, each diver

has a narrow objective, the other can lend help as needed and both can focus on being good at only one or two activities yet still have all options covered. During August, typically what we call “80-80” conditions prevail all month long. That means that despite a few upwellings, 80-foot visibility and 80-degree water temps should be the norm. High tide is always best for

clearest water nearshore. Offshore, clean water can also indicate strong currents due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream. For this reason, drift diving is the way to go and it’s important captains and divers review some important details before jumping in. Carrying a float ball is a critical part of the process and knowing what to do if the float line snaps or the ball gets pulled under while a diver is hooked off to

the bottom can help everyone get back on board safely. Large capacity reels for more scope, handheld grappling hooks to hold the bottom and a two-buoy system are all great ways to handle heavy current. Large, rigid float balls with more volume tend to stay on the surface better than small Styrofoam styles used by snorkelers. Establishing an emergency recall system (like revving the engines three times) and agreeing when to activate professional search and rescue in the event of separation are all good practices. Divers should carry signal devices with them in the water like inflatable safety sausages, signal mirrors and whistles.

Treasure Coast Lionfish Safari Harvests 354 Fish

lanning an outdoor event, months in advance, is a crap shoot in South Florida where weather can dampen the best of plans. A spearfishing tournament, however, is another kettle of fish. SCUBA divers are going to get wet no matter what’s happening with the weather topside. The Treasure Coast Lionfish Safari is traditionally held the second Saturday of June to coincide with World Ocean’s Day. This year we had six well-seasoned teams taking on the

well-established lionfish. A decade ago, the goal was to eliminate this invasive marauder from waters where it doesn’t belong. Our more realistic goal has evolved into controlling the lionfish in our near shore reefs and coastal waters, giving native fish species a chance to maintain their populations. This year’s tournament harvest brought in 354 fish ranging in size

from 5-to-16-inches. Some interesting anecdotal observations from the divers included surprise that some habitat usually covered with lionfish, was not. The upwelling of cold water is not favored by either lionfish or divers and most importantly, the pressure being put on this tasty (but prickly) fish by local divers is helping to control the lionfish on wrecks, artificial reefs and structures preferred by the lionfish where they are easiest to access by divers. The size of this fish is growing way beyond its normal weight in the home waters of the Indo-Pacific. We saw some nice size filets coming off the bigger fish and this will continue to attract spear fishermen and women through the next several months of diving season along the Treasure Coast. FWC continues to support lionfish harvests statewide. The amount and size of these fish in the Gulf waters is even more alarming and we should be wondering if we could be facing a monoculture of lionfish in Florida’s West Coast waters. It is good to see growing cooperation among area lionfish tournaments. This year the Treasure Coast Lionfish Safari was the recipient of gift certificates for free team registration at other area lionfish events that were awarded to our participating divers, along with free air fills, two-tank diving excursions from dive shops, as well as $1,500 in prize money for the team with the Most, Largest and Smallest lionfish. Great things are already in the works for next year’s Safari. Come rain or come shine, the lionfish are here for the taking.

St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program:

Newest Artificial Reef Continues the Legacy of Voice Bernadette A

fter a year in Fort Pierce at both the Summerlin dock and the Port of Fort Pierce, the 180-foot freighter, Voici Bernadette, became St. Lucie County’s latest artificial reef on June 23. Preparations began in June 2018 when McCulley Marine Services, Inc. towed the vessel to Fort Pierce from United States Customs and Border Protection in Miami. MMPS Environmental, Inc. helped remove memorabilia (e.g. brass windows, ship’s binnacle, ship’s wheel, etc.). In a process lasting three months at the Port of Fort Pierce, McCulley Marine Services and Marine Environmental, Inc. began cleaning the ship and preparing her for deployment. All hazardous materials, including fuel and hydraulic lines were removed. The original diesel engine was then removed along with a total of six 20-yard dumpsters filled with trash, wiring, wood, and other floatables. Because the ship was built at a time when polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used, all suspicious materials were removed. Tests of these materials as well as tests on remaining paint on the ship all turned out negative and the ship was towed back to the Summerlin dock in November 2018. Concrete was added to stabilize the Voici Bernadette to stabilize her at a depth of 100 feet. On December 13, 2018, McCulley Marine Services loaded 125 tons of concrete that had been donated by Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. On June 19, 2019, McCulley Marine Services towed the Voici Bernadette back to the Port of Fort Pierce for final preparations, including loading the ship with an additional 200 tons of concrete donated and delivered by the Orlando Utilities Association. The deployment of the Voici Bernadette occurred on June 23 and was well-attended. Post-deployment dives conducted by Keith Mille and the FWC revealed that the ship is sitting upright at depths of 102 feet. Coordinates of the reef are 27°23.870'N, 80°02.970'W. Minimum depth at crow’s nest is 62 feet. Interestingly, photos from these dives showed a number of sea pens, identified by Coastal Systems International as Virgularia presbytes, inhabiting the sea floor surrounding the reef. These organisms, not documented on St. Lucie County’s artificial reef sites before, are related to hard corals and are forage for loggerhead turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. The reef is already home to seaweed blennies but in the future should provide habitat for species like amberjack, gag, red snapper, and scamp. Fundraising to replenish artificial reef program reserves continues. Deployment of the Voici Bernadette would not have been possible without the financial help of Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Florida and the Music City Chapter of the CCA. Each organization donated $25,000 and the reef will be named the CCA Curtis Bostick Reef after a founding member of the CCA. Memorabilia removed from the Voici Bernadette auctioned at the Bottom’s Up Public House raised more than $4,600 for St. Lucie County’s next artificial reef and on August 3, a “Bon Voyage” benefit is being held at the Rusty Putter restaurant at the at the County’s Fairwinds Golf Course. The St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program already located a 575-foot freighter that may become available in the coming years. Dina Strickland Wins Big in 27th Annual Fort Pierce Sport Fishing Club KDW Offshore Tournament T

he Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club’s 27th annual KDW Offshore Tournament took place on June 22 at Causeway Cove Marine and was a great success. The tournament had a fleet of 63 boats participate and paid out $5,000 to the biggest fish of the tournament, won by Dina Strickland with a 39.4-pound

kingfish. Congratulations Dina! Her catch also gave her first place Lady Angler. Cash prizes were also awarded to first, second and third place in the dolphin and kingfish divisions. No wahoo were caught. Also awarded, was $500 to Corey Clive fishing on Reel Krazy for the club member with the largest fish.

Inaugural GBM Snook Tournament: Fish Any 4 Days in September T

he B.R.A.I.N. Cancer Foundation of the Treasure Coast and Little Jim Bait and Tackle are joining forces to host the inaugural GBM (Glioblastoma) Snook Tournament over the month of September. The tournament is organized by and to benefit, brain cancer patients, their families and surrounding Treasure Coast communities. Their goal is to share and spread awareness about cancer and congregate data to study where high concentrated areas with cancer diagnosis are and to discover possible leads to its cause and cure. The inaugural tournament will kick off with a captain’s meeting at Little Jim Bait and Tackle, 601 North Causeway, Fort Pierce, FL, on Saturday, August 31, 2019. Registration and a full set of rules is available online at braincancertc.org and littlejimbaitandtackle.com. The 2019 GMA Snook Tournament fishing runs from September 1, 12:00 a.m. to September 30 at 12:00 a.m. Anglers will be comprised of two-person teams with an entry fee of $200 per team. Teams will have four declared fishing days

during the month. Teams will receive markers at the captain’s meeting and will photograph the length of each snook caught. Cash awards will be given for first, second, and third place, prizes and trophy for Lady Angler, and Junior Angler. One hundred percent of entry fees will be dispersed to winners. The awards party will be held on October 5, 2019, 6:00 p.m. at Little Jim Little Jim Bait and Tackle. Both the captain’s and award’s parties will include live performances, silent auctions, food, a 50/50, and giveaways. At the awards ceremony, a check will be presented to The BRAIN Cancer Foundation of the Treasure Coast with proceeds raised from the silent auction, sponsorships, donations and the 50/50. Bringing Resources And Information Now (B.R.A.I.N.) The mission is to assist families on the Treasure Coast who are affected by cancer and to collect data, diagnosis, personal information, including location, to help map and keep a cancer registry at the local level. The ultimate goal is to help identify hot spots in our communities.

ARC of Martin County KDW Fishing Tournament Raises More than Fish T

he weather and seas were cooperative Father’s Day weekend, providing a good turnout for a local nonprofit’s fundraiser fishing tournament. Saturday, June 15th saw 28 boats and well over 100 anglers compete for $5,000 in cash prizes for kingfish, dolphin and wahoo. Even with a waxing, almost full moon, no wahoo were caught. Peter Morello, owner of My Other Honey Charters sponsored several ARC individuals to enjoy a day out fishing, which was enjoyed by all participating. Anglers were treated to an awards dinner hosted by Manatee Island Bar and Grill. Other top sponsors included H.E. Hill Foundation Inc., Publix, PepsiCo, Frito-Lay and Treasure Coast Provisions. Over $32,000 in auction items were available in silent and Chinese style auctions with KC Daniels volunteering his time to live auction the auction items. With planning in the final stages for ARC’s tenth group home in Martin County, and new transportation vehicles needed for

he Abacos are a 120-mile long island chain in the northern region of The Bahamas. Great Abaco Island and Little Abaco Island serve as the mainland and are paralleled by a chain of barrier islands that are separated by a 62-mile lagoon, called the Sea of Abaco. The lagoon area between this formation and the main island is 3 to 7 miles wide. Abaco Marine Parks are distributed throughout the Abacos. Walker’s Cay is in the northernmost part of the Abacos. Black Sound Cay National Reserve is on Green Turtle Cay. Fowl Cays National Park is between Scotland and Man-O-War Cay. Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park, the southernmost marine park, is 8 miles north of Cherokee Sound. Protected within these parks are coral reefs, reef fish and invertebrates, seagrass beds, mangroves, coastal wetlands and tidal creeks. These parks are managed by the Bahamas National Trust, the organization charged with managing the national park system for The Bahamas. The Trust manages 32 national parks across the archipelago of the Islands of the Bahamas, protecting the unique fish and wildlife. There are also two Marine Reserves in the Abacos, established in 2009, under the management of the Department of Marine Resources. Crab Cay Marine Reserve is just north of Green Turtle Cay, protecting bonefish flats, seagrass beds and mangrove habitats, while No Name Cay Marine Reserve, is situated south of Green Turtle Cay and protects a coral reef system and seagrass areas that are known for healthy conch and tidal creeks. PELICAN CAYS LAND AND SEA PARK

stablished in 1972, the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park is in the central eastern part of Abaco, Bahamas. It includes Sandy Cay, South Pelican Cay, Middle Pelican Cay, Gaulding Cay and Channel Rock and is comprised of some 2,100 acres of terrestrial and marine habitats managed by the Bahamas National Trust. Created in 1972, Pelican Cays National Park was supported by Dave Gale, Frank Kenyon, Dixon Downey and Dr. John F. Storr. Friends of the Environment, an Abaco environmental NGO, was also part of the initiative. The original goal was to protect Sandy Cay Reef, and Gale and Kenyon installed the first mooring buoys to protect the reefs from anchor damage. The mooring buoy program continues today. On the seaward side of Sandy Cay lies Sandy Cay reef. Teeming with fish, the reef offers spectacular snorkeling and diving. Magnificent reefs and pristine beaches within the park make it valuable for swimming, sunbathing and picnicking. The Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park abounds with terrestrial plant and animal life. More than 170 species have been documented. Commercially important species such as Nassau grouper, queen conch and Caribbean spiny lobster are seen in the park. In addition, the park serves as refuge for endangered marine species such as the green sea turtle and the loggerhead turtle. Bridled terns nest in colonies on High Rock and on the northwest side of Pelican Cay beginning late April. Marine mammals frequent the area, including resident bottlenose dolphins. 6 barrel swivel. I like to stay on the long side with my leader to be a bit stealthier. This step will help to avoid line twist, especially when using a spinning reel. Now it’s time to put together some rigs. You’ll need some #5 stainless steel, coffee-colored wire, and depending on the bait that is available, octopus hooks ranging from 3/0 to 7/0 and some treble hooks in size 4 and 6. If you are using smaller baits like pilchards, you’ll want to use a smaller main hook and smaller treble hook for your stinger. For bigger baits like goggle eyes, blue runners and speedos, step up your hook size for your main hook and stinger. Use a haywire twist to attach a 20inch length of wire to the main hook. Don’t over do it, as four to five twists on a 45-degree angle will suffice. Finish off your haywire with three to four straight wraps to secure the connection. Now it’s time to attach your stinger to the main hook. Again, depending on the size of your bait, attach 4 to 8 inches of wire to your stinger hook with a haywire twist and then attach the other end of your stinger rig to the eye of the main hook with another haywire twist. It’s extremely important to rig your stinger with enough slack so that your bait will swim naturally. Now you are ready to attach your rig to your leader. Use an albright knot to connect your rig to your leader. If you don’t know how to tie an albright knot, do an Internet search and plenty of pages and videos will pop up. You can fish this setup a couple of different ways. If you will be drifting, fish at least two rods. You’ll want one bait on the surface and one deeper, from 30 to 60 feet. Send your surface bait out first and allow it to swim away from the boat. You can attach a balloon to your main line to help keep track of where your bait is. Depending on conditions, add 4 to 8 ounces of lead to your deep rod. Slip your lead on above the swivel or attach it to the main line with a rubber band. If you utilize the rubber band method, it’s highly likely that you’ll lose your sinker on the strike. These rigs can also be used for slow trolling baits. Slow trolling can help determine what depth the fish are in. Start trolling in about 60 feet and head out to 200 feet and then back to 60 feet. Once you find the fish, set up your drift at the depth. When kingfish strike, they typically go on a long run away from the boat. Take your time and slowly work the fish toward the boat. Don’t be surprised if you get it close and it takes off on another short run after it sees the boat. Let the fish run and tire out. You should then be able to get your fish back to the boat for a gaff shot to the head.

ing mackerel are aggressive predators with extremely sharp teeth. To catch them with consistency, you must prepare accordingly. Though there are many ways to rig your rods for kingfish, I’d like to focus on a few techniques that have worked for me over the years. These techniques can be utilized on both spinning and conventional tackle. To start, you’re going to want a rod in the 7-foot range that has a sensitive tip, so you can feel the bite, but also some backbone to turn the head of a smoker that just peeled off 100 yards of line in 20 seconds. Sometimes, a big king will swim right back at the boat after a blistering run, and you will have a better chance of coming tight with a higher speed reel. You’ll want nothing less than a 5-to-1 gear ratio. When it comes to line choice, you can certainly spool your reels with braided line, but I prefer 20- to 30-pound monofilament, as I’m kind of old school and learned to fish for kingfish before braid became so popular. CHUMMING UP MAKO SHARKS One of the greatest adversaries on the fly rod in saltwater is the shortfin mako shark. The mako is considered by many as the fastest of all sharks, but what makes this great gamefish stand out is not only its fighting ability but its tendency to leap 20 feet in the air once hooked! The mako shark is one of saltwater fly-fishing’s outstanding but unappreciated gamefish. Found on both in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, a smaller mako in the 20- to 30-pound range can be perfect for the beginning saltwater fly fisherman; of course, fishing for sharks is a tad different than fishing for bluegills in your Uncle Ned’s farm pond. First, you’ll need a boat, preferably a boat over 18 feet that can handle fairly choppy seas. Most center-consoles will do; however, a skiff with a beam of 8 feet or wider and a not-too-deep V will settle in the water better and reduce pitch and roll to a minimum, guaranteeing a much more stable casting platform. A chum line is the most effective way of attracting makos into casting distance of your boat. Chumming attracts the larger makos and will allow you to sight-cast to them. Into a chum bag, place the belly sections or fresh carcasses of tuna, bluefish or bonito. Then place the bag into a milk crate or five-gallon bucket, lower this mess by rope over the side and listen for the musical score from the movie “Jaws” to begin. You won’t have long to wait once that chum slick begins to spread. Ideally, you should use fresh carcasses, but store-bought chum will suffice. One bit of important advice: Less is more when chumming; you don’t

need much; no matter how small the slick, a shark can smell it from miles away. Now that you have the boat and chum, the next thing to do is find a mako. On the West Coast we are fortunate to have the continental shelf only a few miles offshore. On the east coast, you’ll have to venture bit farther offshore. Keep your eyes peeled for working birds and surface-busting bait; constantly check the water temperature, looking for readings between 66 and 70 degrees. But, be patient when chumming. I will wait at least an hour and a half before moving to another spot, but there have been occasions when the sharks make their appearance within a few minutes. Once in the slick, makos will stick around for most of the fishing day. Drifting allows you to cover more water and, in the process, attract more makos to your boat. By choosing the right season, having the right chum and chumming the right areas, you can count on hooking and releasing a good number of makos during the course of a single day on the water.
