A
s far as baits go for summer fishing, you’ll see a wide variety of techniques come into play. Big crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, spoons and all sorts of other baits will catch fish as the warm water temperatures of summer arrive. One bait I’ve always had a ton of confidence in this time of year is a big worm. It’s a very versatile bait that just gets bites in the summer months. Big plastic worms have been around a long time, and they’re often overlooked. You can use a big worm with a light bullet-shaped weight and swim it through grass in shallow water or put a heavier weight on and fish it 30 feet deep. It has a big profile that is just the right size for fish looking to make an easy meal after the spawn is done. That shallow grass bite is extremely fun and isn’t all that common these days. That rod is perfect for maintaining the proper contact with the worm on a long cast and getting a good hook in the fish, especially big fish. A key part of my gear setup is the Mustad Big Bite worm hook. It’s a round-bend style and a 4/0 up to 6/0 is my go-to for big worm fishing. In recent years, we’ve been fishing big worms on a heavy shaky head, too. A ¼- to ½-ounce shaky head allows the worm to stand up a little straighter on the bottom. It is a great way to fish them. I always encourage people to try new baits and new techniques, but don’t pass up throwing a big worm this summer. It works – trust me.

ith state control of Gulf of Mexico red snapper seasons, recreational anglers are seeing more access to one of the most popular fisheries on the planet. However, keeping track of when and where you’re allowed to fish is now harder than ever. With 2019 state summer seasons already open and rocking along, here’s a quick run-down of the regulations so you can tell whether or not you’re allowed to make red snapper fishing a part of your summer vacation.
State Seasons Florida: June 11-July 12, with a possible fall season if there is available quota. Alabama: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 1-July 28, plus Thursday, July 4. Mississippi: May 24-Sept. 2 (Labor Day), with a mid-season closure from July 8-28. Louisiana: Opened May 25 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the state’s recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met. Harvest is also allowed on the Monday of Memorial Day and the Thursday of the Fourth of July. Texas: Open year-round in state waters. State waters extend from the coastline out to the 9-mile mark for Texas and Florida’s Gulf coast. State waters in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana stretch out to three miles from the coast. The daily bag limit is two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length, except in Texas, where there is a four fish per person daily limit with a 15-inch minimum length requirement. A state-specific license is needed for whichever state waters an angler plans to be in possession of red snapper. Each state is also collecting its own red snapper harvest data. Reporting requirements and self-reporting for each state can be conducted through the following apps. See the state websites for information on how to obtain these apps. TARGETING SHORELINE SNOOK

I
t was a typical steamy morning with no wind and flat calm surf. Although I was casting toward the rising sun and could not see into the water, the large accelerating wake tipped me off to a fast-coming strike. Moments later my line was tight and chaos ensued as the large snook made for deeper water. This is a regular occurrence during the summer along the beaches of southwest Florida, and fortunately it can be enjoyed from a boat or the beach, making it accessible to all. You don’t even need to know secret spots, just get out and start looking.
Sure it’s helpful to use your fishing senses to start your search. I like to begin at a pass if possible, but these fish will spread out up and down the beaches. Beach fish tend to be found in one of two places, cruising down deeper cuts or sitting tight to the beach waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey. Because of this, when on foot, it is very important to keep your distance from the water. These laid-up fish can be in extremely shallow water sitting in that first little drop off where the waves lap up, and if you are too close they will see you long before you see them. When choosing your lures, keep in mind that the water is usually pretty clean here and you are fishing over a white sandy bottom. For that reason, lighter colors work best. Spoons can be deadly, and I’m partial to a Reflecto spoon. Bucktail jigs in white, soft swimbaits in light colors and suspending twitch baits all work well, too. You will often see schools of pilchards along the beach, so anything that emulates them is usually a good choice. For tackle, don’t over do it. This is light-tackle fishing at it’s best. A good portion of these beaches is clear from snags and hazards, so heavy gear is not needed. I opt for a G Loomis PR844 popping rod. Its light action allows me to cast anything from a small white bait to a jig. A Shimano 2500 Stradic balances out well, and when spooled with braid gives you plenty of line with stopping power, too. I opt for slightly heavier, 17-pound braid for a couple reasons. In the rare case when a snook does find that one lost crab trap, I have a little more oomph to turn the fish. More importantly, I like the slightly heavy line for knot strength and durability. Regardless of whether you’re in a boat or on foot, fishing the beaches is great. Almost anyone, from a seasoned pro to a visiting newbie, has a great chance at catching fish. Productive beaches are easily accessible and don’t take a lot of preparation or equipment. CCA STAR 4,000 Anglers, $500K in Prizes and Scholarships
T
he CCA Florida STAR competition presented by Yamaha kicked off on Memorial Day weekend, engaging over 4,000 anglers in conservation. The 101-day event invites anglers of all ages and skill levels to walk away with their share of $500,000 in prizes. During the opening week, five unregistered anglers caught 2019 STAR tagged redfish and missed their choice of a brand-new truck or boat, motor and trailer package in the event’s signature iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish Division, including a GMC Sierra pickup truck, a Contender Boats 22 Sport, a Pathfinder Boats 2200 TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a 21’ Carolina Skiff, or a Relentless Boats 24’ Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha Outboards. The CCA Florida STAR competition releases an average of four tagged redfish per coastal county in the state, three counties have eight tagged fish and those are Brevard, Charlotte and Citrus counties. Each year during the competition, anglers catch the fish and call, per tag instructions. And each year, most anglers who catch these tagged fish miss out on a $40,000+ prize package because they aren’t registered, or never thought it would happen to them. Since its inception, the competition has awarded five prizes in the signature redfish division, with over 90 tagged redfish caught in those four years and nearly $900,000 in total prizes. Registration remains open throughout the competition until Labor Day. The STAR competition launched in Florida in 2015 with a focus on conservation through the use of technology and a catch-photo-release format. CCA Florida uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources, and STAR’s smart phone app eliminates the requirement for anglers to harvest or capture and transport fish, while promoting the proper handling of all species. In addition, non-anglers can participate and win by collecting trash and debris. With 17 total divisions, prizes are awarded by random drawing in most divisions and include boats, cash payouts, tackle and marine electronics. As in past years, current New Tide Members (CCA members ages 6 – 17) can enjoy continued free registration in the Youth Scholarship Division, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, which offers $100,000 in scholarships. f you’ve ever competed in a fishing tournament, then you understand how the thrill of the hunt fueled by a competitive drive can create levels of excitement, anticipation, joy and crushing defeat all in the same day… or the same hour, for that matter! When you bring hundreds of people together that share this passion to help find a cure for leukemia, you have what promises to be a great time! Once you throw in the drag-screaming thrill of a big king mackerel, you’ve found yourself smack in the middle of the C-quarters Marina Kingfish Shootout in Carrabelle, Fla. Anyone capable of making it Carrabelle in August should participate. It’s a great tournament, and anyone has the potential to bring home the gold. In the world of competitive fishing, it’s anybody’s game on any given day. This event has a Spanish mackerel division, giving competitors more chances to win and more species to chase. Obviously, due to their smaller size, the Spanish mackerel won’t burn the bearing out of most reels like a king can, but on light tackle these fish put up as much fight, pound-for-pound, as any of them! These toothy critters demand wire leaders and smooth drags. A 40-pound skyrocketing king will cut through mono effortlessly, and if your reel has a sticky drag, forget it; they strike with incredible speed! Live or dead bait will get them to strike, as will a variety of trolled plugs or duster rigs. When trolling, try to target different depths and vary your speed. Some days they want their targets moving fast, and on others, they want it slow or dead still. This is where one of my favorite ways to catch them comes into play. Anchor up or drift with several flat-lines out with an offering of live or dead baits such as cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or even pinfish. Enjoy a cold beverage and a snack, bask in the warm sun and take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. When that peaceful moment is interrupted by the sound of a screaming drag and a bent rod, you’ll be hooked on king mackerel fishing just like me. These fish are incredible fighters, and big ones can peel off a hundred yards of line in mere seconds! C-quarters Marina will host the 16th Annual Kingfish Shootout Aug. 3-4 in Carrabelle, Fla. Editor’s Note: IGFA’s Billfish Royal Slam requires anglers, over a lifetime, to catch nine species of billfish. The following is how Trent Glaub, of Palm Beach, Fla., completed a Billfish Royal Slam in less than a year. By Trent Glaub 1) Black marlin; Los Suenos, Costa Rica; March 20, 2018— On vacation with my wife Stacy and our daughter Marlynn (pronounced marlin), we fished with Capt. Randall aboard the Go Fish. Slow-trolling bridled tuna, I hooked into what I thought was a big jack… until we saw the dorsal fin. “Negro, negro!” yelled Capt. Randall. I battled the estimated 400-pound black marlin stand-up on 30-pound tackle and achieved my first-ever marlin release. I had no idea how lucky I was until Carey Chen told me he’s caught more than 300 blue marlin and is still in search of his first black. I set out to catch all five marlin species. I hadn’t even thought about the Royal Slam yet.
We made a 50-mile, two-hour run to the Finger Bank. When we arrived, the ocean was alive with birds and porpoise balling schools of bait. The bait was so thick we dip-netted sardines, hooked them and pitched them back out, sight fishing to striped marlin on bait balls. My wife, my daughter and I were hooked up nonstop, and we ended up returning to the marina flying 20 release flags.

On The Rocks

The cooler deep currents washing around and through miles of barnacle-encrusted granite provides an abundance of cover for bait and gamefish alike. The close proximity to open water draws both inshore and nearshore predators, offering a vast array of opportunity for the jetty angler. Some jetties offer easy walk-on access, while others are only accessible by boat. Both options require special caution to safety. If walking the rocks is your choice, any amount of green algae can create an instant slip hazard. This is something I’ve witnessed

many times, and the result is always abrasions and bruises from the barnacles and sharp edges of the granite boulders. A simple safeguard against slipping is to wear spiked golf shoes, river shoes with studs, or my favorite and most economical, a simple 3/16-inch sheet metal screw. Simply screw several of these into the sole of your shoes, and you will have a much better grip on the rocks. Change these out before every trip, and you’ll enjoy a safe day on the rocks. If you are fishing the jetties by boat, having a good anchor is paramount. Special attention also needs to be focused on the current and wind to ensure you will not swing into the rocks. Knowing the tide chart is also a must. A switch in tide direction and velocity can pull your anchor, creating an obvious safety concern. Now to the catching! I would say live bait, specifically shrimp, is the most used bait when fishing the jetties, and for a good reason. All fish species find it hard to turn down a wounded shrimp. They can be fished on the bottom, under a popping cork or free lined. When dredging the bottom, make sure your hardware is on the sand and off the rocks. This is a good way to target flounder, redfish and black drum. I recommend using a #10 treble when fishing under a cork or freelining. The shrimp can be rigged under the horn or in the tail, and some people like to break the tail fin off to release a scent trail. This is a good technique for trout, sheepshead and Spanish mackerel. There are many ways to fish shrimp under a cork, but the following is my favorite technique when fishing the jetties. Use a popping cork that is heavily weighted at the bottom. Tie your line to the top of the cork and also tie your leader to the top. A 3- to 5-foot leader is ideal. Depending on the strength of the current and the depth of the fish, a split shot can be placed a few feet above your #10 treble, or you can freeline under the cork. A 7-foot rod is a minimum length for walking the rocks. Give the jetties a try this summer, be safe, and watch your footing while on the rocks. Capt. By Richard Matteson hen the fishing is hot… the Treasure Coast is also hot. Here are some ways to beat the heat and catch fish on the beach, the St. Lucie River and the South Indian River Lagoon. The best fishing is early morning and late, which will eliminate problems with overexposure to the sun.

of the shoreline. If you cast deeper, you’ll catch more jacks, bluefish and ladyfish. Remember to bring extra jigs and leaders since your line can be cut by bluefish and mackerel. The Lagoon: I fish the lagoon at first light. Since I usually wade, I want to be on the water at sunrise and off the water by 10:30 a.m., when it starts getting hot. The fish will still bite during the hot part of the day, but overexposure to the sun is a problem. I love fishing at night around the Stuart bridges, where the snook congregate around bridge lights. You need to fish moving tides, and I prefer falling tide. I fish topwater, shallow-running crankbaits and jigs. I like a 1/8-ounce CAL jig with a 4-inch pearl-white paddletail as my main search-bait. My favorite wading spots are Walton Road, Herman’s Bay North, and Midway Road. Since there’s still little grass south of Vero, I target shallow water with mangroves and piers. St. Lucie River: I like the Crossroads area and South Fork. Right now there are tarpon in the North Fork. The St. Lucie, in general, is not easy to wade and is better fished in a boat. Since not much freshwater has been dumped from Lake Okeechobee this year, the salinity level is good and the fishing is great.
The Beach: I’ve already had several 30- to 40-fish days fishing in the evening on South Hutchinson Island. I walk the beach and cast various lures. If the fish are there, almost any lure will work. I usually fish the beach accesses between Tiger Shores (south) and Hermann’s Bay (north). When you go to any beach access, look for birds and bait. If there’s nothing there, try another access. Even if you find little activity, there will still be snook in the first cut before dusk. Also expect to catch jacks and ladyfish. The last time I walked the beach, I caught snook, mackerel, bluefish, blue runners, jack, croaker, ladyfish and a look-down. There were also tarpon, but I had no hook-ups. I kept a few mackerel to eat. The snook come in the shallow water around 6:30 p.m. and stay until after dusk when the bait moves out. Usually snook are right on the shore in the first cut, where waves break on the sand. I use a steady retrieve, since it helps the fish find the lure in the waves. fleet of 93 boats fished the 23rd annual Fishing Frenzy hosted by the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce and presented by Treasure Coast Geico, out of Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce. The dolphin-only affair is always a favorite of many bluewater anglers. Oculina Bank fishing team won the $10,000 top prize with a dolphin weighing 29.40 pounds. A mere 5 pounds separated first from fourth place, but it was only a half-pound separating winner from runner-up, a payday difference of $7,000. "We caught bait at Bull Shark Barge and started out trolling at about 150 feet of water," said Meloy, who fished with his brother, Brian; son, Zachary; and family friend Jim Tourek aboard Brent's 26-foot Pro Line, named Zachary. "We found convergent currents at 250 feet and were going to put out some live bait and drift." They had begun reeling in the lines to change out for drift fishing and had one last line in the water with a naked ballyhoo still on it, Meloy said. That’s when the big fish hit. The second-place dolphin weighed 28.94 pounds, caught by Eric Kucera aboard the Summer Girl led by Jamie Chandler. Summer Girl won $3,000.

One of Florida’s coastal traditions occurs every July when the official mini-lobster season kicks off. Coastal areas are flooded with “bug-hunters” trying to find their share of these tasty crustaceans. Keep in mind, there are two Florida lobster seasons, the two-day mini season and the eight-month regular lobster season. The mini lobster

Lobster harvesting during either season requires a resident or nonresident saltwater fishing license and a special lobster permit, unless you are exempt. he early bird will get the worm in July`s near coastal fishing zone, as anglers watch for natural fireworks in the summer sky above their offshore playing field. Early departures from the dock will be one of the key components to fishing success, as daytime heating and the convergence of sea breeze boundaries will have the potential to form daily afternoon thunderstorms that often possess dangerous lightning and extreme wind conditions, which can create hazardous boating scenarios. Offshore fishing crews must check local, daily weather forecasts and current radar signatures before launching and then maintain a vigilant, wary eye to the sky for looming weather while fishing.

Check local radar loops and tune into regional weather broadcasts and statements on shipboard VHF radios to stay abreast of changing or threatening weather indicators in the local atmosphere. Know your boat`s limitations in case of fast-moving weather events and adjust your fishing strategies accordingly, which could mean things like fishing nearer to the inlet and/or cutting the fishing day short as a result of menacing conditions. Once offshore and fishing, the anglers of July will want to steer towards the many wrecks and reefs east of Martin County. Fishing
around bottom is the common thread that runs through most successful fishing strategies, as these reef structures provided food and shelter for untold amounts of saltwater species. A simultaneous strategy of bottom fishing for snapper and grouper, while deploying surface or flat line baits will be the go-to fishing technique for near coastal anglers. King mackerel and mahi will be attracted to surface areas in the water column just above these reefs and will regularly eat shiny dead baits, as well as live bait offerings. Grouper will continue to be high on the fish wish hit list, as the “catch and keep” season
for these tasty, bottom brawlers continues this month. Large grouper will be best located on reef structures from 120- to 180-feet this month. Live bait offerings at the base of these reef structures will yield the best results for a grouper bite. Snapper fishing, especially for mangrove and mutton, will also continue to be as hot as the July sun. A pretty class of mangrove snapper (from 3-to-8 pounds) will inhabit a lengthy swath of reef line in 70- to 80-feet of water from the Loran Tower Ledges, north to reef locations east of Jensen Beach. For sturdy mangrove snapper, fish dead or live sardines (or cigar minnows) tight to the reef profile. Various cut baits, such as grunt plugs, will also prove to be irresistible to these tackle savvy snapper. Mutton snapper will be found along this same reef line in a similar depth and fall to the same baits deployed for the mangos. Use a longer leader presentation and deploy baits on the outer contours of the reef`s “footprint” (in the sand), to entice and hook larger, trophy size mutton snapper. So, in July, show your independence from sleep. Get up at the crack of dawn and leave the dock at daybreak to ensure that one gets a jump on the summertime pattern of “afternoon weather” and get your fishing job done early.

he weather is getting hot and so is the fishing as we get into July! The baitfish greenies are schooled up just outside the St. Lucie Inlet, Bullshark Barge, and Sandpile. The pilchards are showing up more along the beaches and under the greenies. Simply look for birds on the beaches, move in fast, and throw the cast net.
I use a half-inch mesh nine-foot cast net. The pilchards can also be found early morning near the boat ramps and causeways. The tarpon bite has been steady back in the St. Lucie River every morning. We use live mullet 5-to10-inch long or D.O.A. Rootbeer TerrorEyz. Some mornings they prefer live mullet, and some mornings they prefer small rubber lures. We always cast both until we see what works. July is also a great month to try for tarpon at the “Crossroads” and St. Lucie Inlet. We do best at the Crossroads with an incoming tide between 5 and 7 a.m. The inlet fishes best with outgoing tide early morning and near sunset. Live 8-to-12-inch mullet work best with 60-to-80pound fluoro-leader. The snook have moved out near the inlet for the summer months. There are many options when
fishing for them throughout the summer depending on what baitfish they’re feeding on. Hopefully, we see the massive schools of silverside minnows, but they don’t always show up. We always see the pilchards throughout July. You can’t go wrong with using live pilchards at the “Rock Piles”. We also throw them near the docks of Sailfish Point and along the bottom near Hole in the Wall. And of course, along the beaches. Some redfish and trout can also show up near the inlet throughout July. When using artificials, we do best with D.O.A. C.A.L. Jigs, Giles Jigs, Yo-Zuri crystal minnows, and split tail jerk baits. I’ve started seeing lots of glass minnows in the river, so hopefully the silverside minnows show up. If not, there’s plenty of pilchards. We’ve seen the live two-to-threeinch crabs drifting out of the St. Lucie River with a morning outgoing tide.

They also show up at the causeways with tarpon rolling on them. Look for small “buzz spots” on the surface and use a dip net to pick up the crabs. You can also bring the crabs to some nearshore wrecks to try for permit.
phenomenal. It helps cast delicate live baits so far and still has enough backbone to really stick it to an angry tarpon or cobia. I’m just now starting to use the Humminbird Solix sonar and I’m totally blown away by that. The side scan advantage is a game changer. Literally within the first 10 minutes of using it, it provided action from a tarpon we would not have had. I will keep you posted as to how it works in deeper water scenarios, but I can tell you now, I can’t wait. This stuff is definitely Off The Chain. Offshore, there is plenty of sargassum weed moving up the coast, so I expect dolphin fishing to get better. Later than normal but I’ll take it. July is also one of my favorite times of year to target swordfish in day or night and also run over to the east side and target yellowfin tuna. shade and a D.O.A. Shrimp can help you hook up on a nice red. Docks are usually very productive all year for us. Top water lures are good to use early on the flats. There have been some nice trout this year and it’s a great way to target them on the
grass flats. With snook season being closed, I generally try not to target them in summer. There will be larger snapper in the river around structure and along channel edges. Bridges will be producing snapper, drum and
one keeper red snapper per person, per day. There are no minimum or maximum size limits for red snapper and they will be holding out on our favorite reefs, ledges and deep-sea structures. We recommend using live bait and chumming the water in order to bring the snappers away from the line-cutting reefs and structures! Also, red snapper doesn’t move around a whole lot, so when you get a bite, mark your coordinates and return the next day for one more. No boat, no problem, The Lady Chris will be running specialty red snapper trips offering a limited number of anglers to load up on these delicious red treats. Summertime in Fort Pierce is a true fisherman’s paradise. Not only are the reef fish biting, but we also
have an influx of mahi-mahi adding a splendid splash of yellow and green to our fish boxes, and with the annual turtle hatchings going on there will be an all-round fishing frenzy. Remember to stay hydrated, keep your eye on the radar and skyline for fast moving thunderstorms, and always let your friends know when you are expected to be back. uly has arrived and it brings hot weather, festive parties and some great fishing action to the Treasure Coast. Getting out early or late is a must to beat the heat of the day. Action will begin at first light and late in the evenings. Water temperatures are warm so look for docks and mangroves that provide shade to help the fish cope with the hot weather. I like to fish docks and mangroves in July. Redfish like the
sheepshead during July. Live or dead shrimp will be hard for them to resist. Watch the tides and fish the slower sides of them for best results. Whiting will continue to be in the surf with the occasional bluefish and Spanish mackerel. Sharks will be patrolling along the beach also. Watch for the glass minnow schools to flood into the river and you will find lots of action surrounding these tasty morsels! Jacks, Spanish mackerel and bonito are a few of the fish that love to feast on the glass minnows. Fish deeper water as the sun warms things up. I like channel edges for a variety of species as the water temps get into the upper eighties. Incoming tides will bring in cooler water and that’s a good time to fish! Try Harbor Branch, Queen’s Cove and Bear Point this month for some good action. Enjoy fishing in July! Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby, it’s an ADVENTURE! Good fishing!

hile trolling for pelagic fish will still be producing, it is cobia time! This is the time of year that we could see cold water upwellings, which will push cold water from the deeper depths closer to shore. With these upwellings, the cobia will move into shallower waters and all the way onto the beaches. Cobia are a great fighting fish and taste great as well. One of the ways to find these fish is to look for structure or reefs in the areas of the cooler water temperatures and then start sight fishing. If the water is clean and clear, have someone with polarized sunglasses stand at the highest safe spot on the boat looking for these fish swimming on the surface. Also watch for sharks or rays, cobia will more than likely be following them
or under them. If any of these are seen, cast a bigger jig or a weighted grub in their direction to try to entice any cobia that might be around to eat. If there is a cobia that looks at your jig but won’t eat, have a frisky live bait or a piece of squid to pitch to him and it should be game on. If you haven’t been able to sight fish any cobia around structure, it is always a good idea to try slow trolling or drifting live baits around structure. You can also sight fish cobia the same way off the beaches in as close as 10-to-15 feet depths. It is best to use a longer fishing rod when sight fishing cobia for making longer casts. Cobia will eat most live baits such as sardines, pilchards, greenies and even mullet. When using a jig, cobia most likely will go after a bucktail type jig with a grub tail attached or an eel like jig, such as a Hogey jig, being eels are their favorite food. Please be familiar with the size limit of cobia to the fork of the tail. Always net a smaller fish if legal size is questionable for immediate release. Remember, these are a strong fish and will cause damage if they get away from you. So, if you know the fish is legal, have the fish box ready to receive the fish and

close the lid quickly. Keep in mind while sight fishing, if you see any mats of sargassum weed, slowly make your way over to them. With pitch rods ready cast some live bait toward the edge of the mats and see what comes out. If the mats are in a line along a rip,

The catch and release snook action should be good in the Fort Pierce Inlet when fishing with live baits. Remember to fish the baits on the bottom in the inlet or free line them up around the rocks. The whiting bite should remain steady in the surf. Use a piece of fresh dead shrimp. You may also get a few pompano.

set out your live baits and slow troll along the edges of the mat. This time of year, you could catch mahi, triple tail or any number of other species. Be safe and watch the sky for afternoon storms while on the water.

he inshore fishing should be red hot for trout and redfish on the flats both to the north and south in the river. First light and just before dark will be the best times. For the trout, try using live baits like a pilchard or a pigfish and fish them under a popping cork. Also try an artificial bait like a D.O.A. Bait Buster or some other top water bait. Use the natural colored baits. Later in the morning fish a little deeper and use a live shrimp. For the redfish, you will want to try the same baits along with a gold spoon. Fish the docks along both north and south Indian River Drive and around any mangroves. The snapper bite should continue to be good along the channel edges and around the local bridges. Try using a live shrimp on a two-foot leader of 20-pound fluorocarbon, a half-ounce weight and a #2 hook.
Buddy and Rose from the Lakeland area fished on the LottaBull and Rose hooked up this 13-pound mahi along with a limit of kingfish. This fish was caught out in the open water off of Fort Pierce, with no flotsam in the area. It ate a live pilchard and was caught in 120 feet.

uly offshore of Sebastian offers up some great fishing opportunities and the flat seas will make it a pleasure to be on the water. American red snapper (ARS) season for 2019 is for five days (July 12, 13, 14, 19, and 20). The limit is one per angler and no size restrictions. The Sebastian reefs in the 70-to-180-foot range are rich with red snapper. The ARS show up nicely with sonar since they like to hang out in the water column from bottom to halfway to the surface. They are easy to catch once you’ve found them. Frozen squid, Spanish sardines and cigar minnows are usually gobbled up. Sometimes when the fish get finicky, you’ll need to downsize your terminal tackle and use a sneakier approach. A live
greenie, pinfish, etc. will catch the monsters. When using live bait, let the ARS peck a few times. Wait until the rod bends, then wind and engage the circle hook. Please remember, when releasing the larger ARS, to use a venting tool when you notice a distended stomach. When you are catching a lot of smaller/medium ARS, try to slow your retrieve down when winding in the fish. This will allow it to decompress and increase its chances of survival when released. Water temps this month can range from hot to freezing cold. The key is to adapt your fishing to match the conditions. Each summer we get cold water that pushes in from the deep ocean. It comes in under the warm surface water and varies in temperature, depth and timing. Bottom fish become lethargic at these cold temps and are difficult to catch. When the bottom temp is cold, try bottom fishing somewhere else or try fishing on the surface for different species. You can detect cold water by feeling your lead sinker and the cold fish. The reefs in 60 feet and along the beach can have warmer water and can be productive for mutton and mangrove snapper. Some fish are more resilient to the chilly water. Amberjack, cobia, and even snapper will rise easily to a chum slick on

the 60-to-100-foot reefs. Look on your sonar for big fish way up in the water column. The cobia and AJ’s will swarm around bull sharks this time of year on certain reefs in the 90-foot range. They will slam a bucktail with a twisty tail worked very aggressively. The challenge is to get the fish boated before the bull sharks get them. In the Gulf Stream there will be plenty of dolphin, wahoo and sailfish caught this month. Usually there is a good run of summer sailfish in July. Watch for the free jumpers, from 70 feet on out, and change your spread up a bit to include some naked ballyhoo. Calmer waters call for less commotion on the surface and a sneakier presentation. A good teaser will bring them into the spread. Try getting away from those skipping and popping baits and try some swimming rigs with chin weights and even split bill rigs. They are a little harder to rig and present to the fish,
but when they swim right, at slow speed, they are deadly. This month the two-day lobster mini season is July 24 and 25. You’ll want to avoid fishing on these days. The lobsters of Sebastian are not as numerous as they are in south Florida, but they make up for it with their size. Five- to ten-pound lobsters are common in our waters. Any of the reefs from the beach out to 100 feet will hold them if the right kind of cracks are present. Have fun and dive safe. Don’t let lobster fever make you take risks. This time of year, it’s good to get on the water early and get home early. Watch out for those days when the severe thunderstorms are predicted to form early and move offshore or along the coast. These offshore moving storms can be severe and can quickly get between you and the inlet. Be safe and enjoy those flat morning seas this month!

The top of the list in the Sebastian River in midsummer is tarpon. As migratory tarpon arrive in the Sebastian area, they find their way into the north fork of the Sebastian River. Live mullet early and late in the day are the best bet, but jerk baits, diving plugs, D.O.A. shrimp and topwater can be successful when the fish turn on. Approaching afternoon thunderstorms can spark the tarpon into feeding, but if you can stand the heat, soaking a bait at mid-day has been productive as well. Some big snook continue to reside in the Sebastian River throughout the summer. Fish docks and cover by day and lighted docks and oyster bars in the dark.

uly's fishing can be HOT, but not in a good way. Summertime heat for a land angler means get out early and be home early. Walking the beaches for snook, tarpon, jacks, and other predators will be the main target. Having four-to-six-inch swim baits will cover most sizes of the bait fish. If there are smaller bait fish around, I like throwing the Bass Assassin Little Boss in the silver ghost color with a one-quarter ounce no color jig head. Your window of opportunity will be small in the river if you plan on throwing artificial lures for seatrout and snook. Sometimes when it gets hot you will definitely have to resort to a live greenie, live shrimp

— Snook season may be closed but it’s the best time to get in on the catch and release. The beaches and inlets are your best bets for snook fishing. Bucktail jigs and live bait fished near the bottom around the mouths of the inlets will work well. Be aware of strong currents and large boats if you plan to fish in any inlet. Be sure to have a PFD and all safety equipment for any trip. A good kayak launch is the south side of Jupiter Inlet. Try fishing the outside of the north and south jetty as well as drifting the current in the main channel.

The wahoo bite should be on the mind this month. Running baits deeper in the water column anywhere from 60-to-80 feet below surface will give you the best opportunity to land a wahoo. Tuna chances will remain good while vertical jigging. Look to fish the 220-to-260-foot range.

in the Heat of the Summer
love this time of the year; running the beaches or fishing the reefs and wrecks in the morning in search of a good fight! This is a pure adrenalin rush! I first look for schools of baitfish with big predators busting them. If there is nothing happening, I start running the wrecks and reefs. The technique I’m using is very simple - cast your fly out, let it sink and strip the big baitfish fly as fast as you can. Fishing this way and fighting kingfish (use wire), mahi-mahi, monster bonitos (false albacore), etc. is brutal! It can be exhausting because you are fighting against big sharks and goliath grouper as well. Put the maximum pressure on the fish and get them in the boat as quick as possible! • 12-weight rod with a good reel and a great drag (Nautilus fly reels made in Miami) • Sinking lines (SA big water
100-pound core) • 50-pound tippet • 4/0-7/0 baitfish flies BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET TANGELD UP IN THE LINE! If you are not feeling comfortable with the heavy stuff - fish a 30-pound tippet! Casting tip of the month When you pick up the line to start your back cast, make sure that your rod tip is low right above the water and that your arm is straightened out. Strip all your loose line in to avoid any slack in the line so that when you start casting you’ll instantly load the rod. If you start with a very short line and you want to avoid a lot of false casts, put your rod tip deep right above the water, wiggle your fly rod and feed some line out by using the water resistance. Follow with one roll cast to extend the line length before you’ll

uly marks the peak of awesome summertime dive conditions in south Florida and is the best time of the year to experience what the Treasure Coast area has to offer. Visibility has been great recently and although upwellings have been reported, divers are still having a great time this year. July also marks the return of the annual tradition of lobster mini season. Always falling on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, mini season is considered an annual tradition for many in south Florida. This year, timing for ‘Midnight Madness’ dives should be ideal with an overnight high tide around 1:00 a.m. opening night making for near perfect conditions for dives off the beach in Vero, Fort
Pierce or Pecks Lake. Experienced divers will focus on scouting spots and ensuring equipment is in good working order while rusty divers should look in to refreshing dive skills before heading out on the hunt at the end of the month. Interestingly, many are surprised to hear that some divers never even leave the inlets to bag a limit; especially this year, local waterways have been blessed with clean conditions and minimal freshwater releases. Rocky channel edges and structure in the river have been known to hold big lobsters if you know where to look. Be advised that boat traffic can make these areas hazardous and strict adherence to dive flag laws is a must. A quick review of dive flag laws seems appropriate: Flags towed on buoys in the water must be at least 12-inches by 12-inches, while flags displayed from boats must be minimum 20-inches by 24-inches. Boaters must make reasonable efforts to stay at least 300 feet away from dive flags in open water and at least 100 feet away in rivers, inlets, or navigation channels. Divers must make a reasonable effort to stay within 100 feet of a dive flag while in rivers, inlets, or navigation channels and within 300 feet on open water. Lastly, check the flag has been taken

lans are nearly complete for the seventh annual Treasure Coast Bonito Blast (TCBB), which is set for Aug. 16-17, 2019. This year’s tournament includes $2500 in prize money, dinners live music, auction items, and a raffle for a Flying Fish paddle board. The Treasure Coast Bonito Blast is the largest one-day tournament on the Treasure Coast and to date, the tournament has raised over $300,000.00 for the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF), helping approximately 130 veterans. A captain’s meeting on Friday, Aug. 16, will include dinner and entertainment by Jupiter Trailer Trash. The awards party on Saturday night, Aug. 17, will include dinner, a silent auction and music by the Mikey B band. All tournament festivities will be hosted at Pirates Cove Resort and Marina, Stuart, FL. The captains meeting kicks off Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., weigh-in (Aug. 17) on the dock from 12 noon to 3 p.m., and awards party (Aug. 17) at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $125 for up to four anglers if registered before Aug. 16 and $150.00 on or after August 16. Anglers may be added at $25 for each additional angler. Junior anglers (under 12) fish for free and
will be recognized for their catch. Non-anglers may join in dinner and festivities for a $25 donation. Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($1500), second ($750) and third place ($250). Two Calcutta’s will be offered, one for the largest dolphin and the other for the largest snapper, largest grouper, and largest amberjack. Capt. Billy Black and Karen Hermanspan are once again organizing volunteer boat captains who will host Veteran anglers, many of whom have never fished in a tournament before. Ariel Seafood has graciously supported the event for six years and will once again donate all proceeds obtained from the sale of all unwanted bonito, collected on the day of the event, to WVRF. The WVRF was founded in 2009 to assist qualified disabled post 9/11 veterans’ transition into civilian life. The organization provides immediate emergency financial support. WVRF assists veterans with job training, housing, transportation, past-due bills, child needs and other forms of assistance. he Stuart Sailfish Club, the area’s oldest fishing club, held its second annual KDW Fishing Tournament May 10-12, 2019. The tournament hosted a fleet of 25 boats and was held in conjunction with the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Fishing Frenzy Tournament, allowing participants to fish in both tournaments and to be eligible to win double the prizes. First, second and third place cash prizes for largest kingfish, dolphin and wahoo were up for grabs. Winners in the dolphin category included: first place, Brian Hargrave on The Boat, 25.82-pounds.; second place, Kadri Benton, on White’s Tackle/Smoke Show, 23-pounds.; and third place, Chris Langle, on White’s Tackle/ Smoke Show, 19.34-pounds. In the kingfish category, winners were: first place, Gary Belcher, on Plum Krazy, 26.2-pounds; second Place, Carlos Lopez, on Dr.’s Orders, 22.4-pounds; and third place, Brandon Haynes, on White’s Tackle/Smoke Show, 11.4-pounds. No wahoo were caught during the tournament. Other prizes awarded included: blackfin tuna, heaviest fish, Stacey Dunton, on Hot Pursuit, 7.06-pounds; junior angler, Jaydon Leonard, on Hawks Hooker, 10.2-pound dolphin; female angler, Michelle Henderson, on Angler Management, 17.33-pound dolphin; and sailfish release, Brock Belcher, on Plum Krazy. More than $3,700 in prizes were awarded in the tournament. Participants fishing in both tournaments could leave out of any of three inlets but were required to weigh in at the Fort Pierce - Fishing
Frenzy location. There were weigh stations available for KDW only boats, at the St. Lucie Inlet and Jupiter Inlet. “This is the first year that we worked in conjunction with the Chamber’s Fishing Frenzy in order to provide a greater experience for our participants and to give them the ability to win larger prizes,” said Charlie Conigliaro, Stuart Sailfish Club president. “Overall, this was a great tournament, due in large part to the organization committees, volunteers, sponsors and those who fished. We’re also excited to be able to continue our Club’s missions of promoting the conservation of game fish, providing for scholarships, and encouraging fishing opportunities in Martin County waters.” The KDW awards party was held in the Club’s newly built tiki-style pavilion. Guests were treated to a pig roast and full-service bar provided by Paella King/Bonner Mobile Bar. The Stuart Sailfish Club was formed over 78 years ago and was incorporated in 1941. Formed for the purpose of promoting the conservation of game fish and encouraging visitors to fish in Martin County waters, the club has over 250 members with over 100 boats in the member fleet. Voici Bernadette Deployment Update
P
reparation for the deployment of the 180-foot freighter, Voici Bernadette continued through the deployment date of June 23rd. The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Florida and the Music City Chapter of the CCA donated a total of $50,000. By donating these funds, the CCA was awarded the naming rights to the reef and chose the name “CCA-BCT Reef ” to highlight the Building Conservation Trust’s role in the CCA’s conservation projects. The Providers of Freedom Veterans group, in cooperation with American Legion Post 40, Stuart Scuba, and MMPS Environmental planned pre-deployment dives for the sinking of the vessel. These dives ensure that no biological resources (natural hardbottom communities) or cultural resources (historical shipwrecks) are affected by the deployment. Since the driving purpose of artificial reefing is to create additional fish habitat that can be enjoyed by anglers and divers, it is important to deploy in locations without existing hard bottoms. In keeping with the moniker “People’s Reef Program”, these three groups and businesses have shown the importance of different segments within the community to the success of artificial reefing. Having veteran’s groups complete the pre-deployment survey saves the County money, which can then be used to sink additional vessels. Further community involvement has been shown by: • MMPS hired The Lady Chris to view the deployment of the Voici Bernadette. Jimmy Freitas’ Bonner Mobile Bar and Paella King was chosen to cater the boat. • The Fort Pierce Yacht Club sponsored the deployment and hosted
the “after-party” in conjunction with and MMPS. • Technical Diving International - Scuba Diving International (TDISDI) affixed video cameras to the ship so that the sinking can be viewed later by interested parties. St. Lucie County Commissioners have also been involved: • Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky planned an auction of memorabilia removed from the Voici Bernadette. The auction took place at the Bottom’s Up Public House on June 19. • Commissioner Cathy Townsend, in conjunction with Jimmy Freitas held another auction at the Rusty Putter at the Fairwinds Golf Course for any items that did not meet the reserve price set in the auction booklet. This was the Bon Voyage party for the Voici Bernadette and paid tribute to Mr. Freitas who has unselfishly helped us out with many projects in the past. On June 19, McCulley Marine Services towed the Voici Bernadette to the Port of Fort Pierce. The port donated dock space to the project for final preparations including loading the ship with 200 tons of concrete donated and delivered by the Orlando Utilities Commission. This delivery was arranged by the CCA and will make the CCA-BCT reef stable at a depth of 100 feet. This depth will make the reef home to such species as amberjack, gag, red snapper, scamp, and juvenile snowy grouper. ometimes it's good to knock off early. Just ask anglers Dr. Michael Lustgarten, Tom Daniels and Jason Paukune, all of Stuart. Competing in the 33rd annual Treasure Coast Builders Association Memorial Day Weekend Fishing Tournament, the Off Call fishing team boated what may have been the biggest dolphin Lustgarten has caught off Stuart in 27 years of fishing here. A fleet of 82 boats fished the TCBA's offshore division and another 20 teams fished the inshore division. Offshore teams fished for dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, grouper and snapper to earn cash prizes. The heaviest cobia and tuna were awarded special prizes, as were the top Junior Angler and top Female Angler. Inshore anglers fished for cash prizes for total length combined of each team's largest snook, trout and redfish. Lustgarten said his team's big dolphin was in the boat by 11:15 a.m.
"When we got it into the boat, we all looked at each other and said, 'We're done!' " Lustgarten said. He pointed the boat toward the St. Lucie Inlet and ran back to the tournament weigh-in at Pirates Cove Resort and Marina. The fish, Lustgarten said, was a nice surprise after what had been a slow day of trolling offshore. "It's one of those times when it's better to have luck than skill," Lustgarten said. "We started off at the Bull Shark Barge trying to catch live bait but couldn't find any. We ran to the south and started trolling in a spot where we had seen a kingfish skyrocket." After little action, they headed to three more spots before deciding to troll in about 145 feet of water, he said. Due east of St. Lucie Inlet in that depth, Lustgarten said one of his teammates noticed a pair of dolphin swimming alongside the boat. "I made a right turn and we hooked up with both," he said. "We landed the cow first. It weighed 19 pounds. Then we got the big one in." It weighed 41.54 pounds and
won $1,500 as the division winner in the tournament. Later in the day, Scott Vanduzer's Jobsite fishing team weighed in a 39.41 pounder to make Lustgarten's team nervous. Emil Laviola, Larry Benning, Ron Massaglia and Tony Brown, all of Fort Pierce, and members of the Sunseeker Too fishing team hoped there would be a good grouper bite. They fished the reefs in 120-160 feet Saturday to find out. "We dropped down on a spot in 140 feet and started pulling up two genuine red snapper," Laviola said. "They were big, too, 20-25 pounders. As I was helping to vent and release them, my rod got bit, and I knew right away it was a big fish." Laviola said it kept pulling drag, so he thought it was an amberjack at first. Then after it quit pulling, and he began to get it closer to the surface, he realized it was a big grouper. At the scales, it weighed 32.18 pounds. Big enough to win the division. No wahoo were weighed. Ryan Regan of Jobsite won the kingfish division with a 42.67-pounder.

Hampson and Fantini Take First Place in June BCFA Tourney A
total of 32 boats fished the Backcountry Fishing Association’s sixth tournament of the 2019 season, held on June 1, out of Little Jim Fish Camp in Fort Pierce. Conditions were hot, with a high near 90F. Winds were southsouthwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. At the end of the day, a total of 23 trout and 7 redfish were weighed in. Chelsea Hampson and Andy Fantini took first-place with 2.34-pound trout and a 6.07-pound redfish, a combined weight of 8.41-pounds, earning the duo a nice payout of $600. And if that wasn't enough, they also took the redfish Calcutta, winning an additional $230. Darren Frost and Colin Willis took second place, winning $360 with a 3.39-pound trout and a 4.14-pound redfish, a combined weight of 7.53-lbs. Jason Gillespie, and his wife Ashley (alternate), took third place winning $240 with a 2.22-pound trout and a 4.98-pound redfish, a total combined weight of 7.20-pounds. Ashley also took

The Backcountry Fishing Association tournament is a ninemonth circuit which runs from January through September, with a two-day Classic in October. The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers the opportunity to win cash and gain points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species.

Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. Teams must participate in at least five tournaments to be eligible to fish the Classic which is a two-day event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season are given a bye from day one. The remaining eligible teams compete on an elimination basis the first day, where only the top five teams of day one progress to day two to compete
against the season point leaders for the grand prize and cash for the top four teams. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournament each month, the fee is $60 per team. The seventh tournament of the series takes place on Saturday, July 6, with a captain’s meeting the night before on Friday, July 5. Treasure Coast Casters held its Fish Off for the Treasure Coast Caster of the Year tournament on May 19. Despite a few glitches, which included the cancellation of a live shrimp delivery due to technical difficulties, the community rallied to ensure live baits were available for the tournament. “David Maxwell of Dave’s Live Baits saved the day, supplying all of our anglers with live baits for the tournament,” said tournament co-organizer Cammie Ward. Anglers had 11 species to fish for, but as fishing sometimes goes, only 1 species of fish was weighed in, snapper. “Anglers caught fish, but they were either too short, or not on the list,” added Ward. Notable catches included a large bonnet head shark, and plenty of jacks, catfish and ladyfish. Kendrick Forlifer pre-fished the day before the tournament and caught a 25-inch redfish and a snook, but on tournament day, he didn’t have anything to bring to the scale. At the end of the day, Andrew Evans earned the prestigious Treasure Coast Caster of the Year title with 40 points. “This was Andrew’s last tournament, as he just graduated from John Carroll Andrew Evans, 2019-2020 and is headed off to college. 12th Annual Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup July 27
A
s summer comes into full swing, so do the organizers of the Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup, which is slated for Saturday, July 27, 2019. Conducted by the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC) and sponsored by the Florida Inland Navigation District, since 2008, the Treasure Coast Waterway cleanup has engaged more than 9,600 volunteers, who have removed more than 82 tons of trash from the waterways of Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. The counties of Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River, along with the municipalities of Stuart, Port Saint Lucie, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach and Sebastian will all recognize July 21-27 as Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup Week, as well as the efforts of the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC), the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND), and the businesses, community organizations and 1,000-plus volunteers who are dedicated to keeping Treasure Coast waterways clean. “The waterways in the District can accumulate trash and debris from many sources. FIND sponsors voluntary waterway clean ups in each of the 12 counties in the District with Keep Florida Beautiful affiliates, as well as Marine Industry Associations,” says Janet Zimmerman, Assistant Executive Director for FIND. “We believe these cleanup efforts are important not
just for the health of the waterway because of the removal of the debris, but they also help to bring together the users of the waterway in a spirit of community and in a way, that fosters environmental awareness. These are good projects, and we enjoy sponsoring them up and down the waterway.” This year’s volunteers will receive a commemorative 12th annual event t-shirt and watercraft participants

TIPS FOR THE ATLANTIC RED SNAPPER SEASON

T
his month’s Atlantic red snapper season is short, so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed for good weather. The snapper are out there, so catching a limit shouldn’t be a problem. The following are some tips from Capt. Greg Rapp on how to maximize your limited time on the water. 1) Have a Game Plan: Plot a course of action. On opening day, the reefs and wrecks will be a zoo. Know where you’re going and have several backups before you head out. 2) Trust Your Bottom Machine: When you arrive, watch your bottom machine for signs of life. If you roll over a wreck or a nice ledge and are not marking life, don’t waste your time fishing it. When a spot has abundant snapper, the machine will light up like a Christmas tree. If you check two or three spots within an area and you don’t mark fish, don’t be afraid to make a significant move. 3) Start Big: Bigger bait equals bigger fish! There are plenty of 20-plus-pound sow snapper ready to engulf a giant live bait. Plus, none of us will be disappointed if we crank up a chunky grouper. This will also result in fewer small fish being reeled to the surface and dying from barotrauma. When targeting big snapper, I use jumbo live pinfish, a big pigfish or large croakers. To properly fish large baits, a sliding sinker rig is the way to go. Start with the smallest egg sinker the current will allow you to get your bait to the bottom with. When it comes to bottom fishing, your main line and leader line should be about the same. Make sure you use a strong hook that you can really pull on without straightening it out. Set your drag to slip just before the breaking strength of the line. After the fish is away from the bottom, back the drag off a little more or at least be sure to lean to the fish when it surges. I can’t tell you how many times I have caught large snapper and grouper that have frayed the line or have come up barely hooked from a ripped lip. If we didn’t lean on the surges, they would have gotten away. 4) When to Lighten Up: If you find yourself on a spot that is marking fish but they are not biting, or you are only catching small snapper, it may be because the spot has already been beat up. GULF REEF FISH SURVEY SEEKS FISHERY INFO

here are several ways you can help FWC improve recreational fisheries data. If you are fishing for red snapper or other reef fish in the Gulf, don’t forget you are required to have Gulf Reef Fish Angler on your fishing license (even for those 65 and older). Gulf reef fish anglers may be selected to receive a fishing survey in the mail. If you receive a survey, please return it to us, even if you didn’t fish for reef fish. The iAngler app, created by the Angler Action Foundation, is also a great way to share information about your catch, whether it is red snapper or red drum. And finally, no matter if you’ve responded to a survey or logged your catch on iAngler, if FWC staff approach you at the dock asking for details about your fishing trip, please share. Florida Angler Achieves 50-Fish Milestone Allision Stattner’s big wahoo was the 50th species caught on her Saltwater Fish Life List.

llison Stattner is an accomplished angler. She has a pending 130.2-pound tarpon world record on fly and is featured in the new book “Fifty Women Who Fish.” Recently, she added another accomplishment to her list by becoming the first—and only—angler to join FWC’s 50-Fish Club. The milestone recognizes an astounding number of fish species Stattner has checked off in her Saltwater Fish Life List.

don’t want to sound like I disapprove of harvesting fish, but we should all do our best to use fish as a sustainable form of entertainment and food. De-hookers and barbless or circle hooks minimize the time trauma for fish at boatside. I catch quite a few fish I want to release as healthy as possible due to size, creel limits and seasons, as well as fish that are heavy with roe. There are many ways to accomplish the release without ever touching the fish at all. A quality de-hooker with a T handle provides full control of the fish and hook when using barbless circle hooks. With quite a few species, dozens of fish are caught per trip, and being able to take care of the smaller fish helps those fish survive to sexual maturity. Hopefully they’ll have at least one successful spawn, which ensures the future fishery. There are other species like speckled trout that are effortless to release with a barbless jig hook. You can simply give trout slack line at the boat, and they will release themselves. Or just grab the jig head and barely push backward, allowing the trout to swim away without ever being touched. Too may times, I’ve seen young or uninformed anglers struggle with fish at boatside. It’s even worse when a fish intended for release is hooked deep with a barbed jig or J hook. I try to be courteous and inform the angler on how to use the de-hooker and/or barbless hooks in the future. Another way to reduce the possibility of deep hooking is to use more soft plastic baits. I’ve found that Gulp! baits work great with circle hooks, as well. Because they are impregnated with scent, fish tend to keep Gulp! baits in their mouths much longer than standard soft plastics. I’ve found that using Pro Cure Shrimp flavor on my soft plastic shrimp jigs has a similar effect. All fish have great senses of smell and taste, and a bag of soft plastic baits typically smells or tastes like… plastic. This is the reason Pro Cure Shrimp is a no-brainer. Everything in the water eats a shrimp. I typically keep a shrimp tied on the jig rod, and a shrimp on the cork rod. Speaking of smell and taste, if you smoke, consider how the smell of cigarettes on you hands affects the smell of the soft plastics you use. In closing, I’d like to encourage all the parents and role models out there to set a good example of how to properly release fish and how to use all the tools available to release fish as healthy as possible. NEW RULES FOR SURF SHARKS
S
hore-based shark fishing is undergoing some changes in Florida. Effective July 1, FWC regulations changes are intended to increase survival of released sharks, improve information gathering for the fishery and address public safety concerns. The rule changes include: Photo • Creating a mandatory, nocourtesy cost, annual shore-based shark of Chris fishing permit. This permit is reBeardsley quired for all shore-based shark anglers age 16 and older, including those 65 and older who are normally exempt from needing a fishing license. • Requiring those under 16 to take the educational requirement associated with the permit unless they are fishing with an adult who already holds the permit. • Prohibiting chumming when fishing for any species from the beach. • Requiring immediate release of prohibited shark species when fishing from the shore. Anglers are required to cut the leader, line or hook to prevent delaying release of prohibited species. • Requiring that prohibited shark species remain in the water when fishing from shore or from a vessel. • Requiring the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks to target or harvest sharks when using live or dead natural bait when fishing from shore and from a vessel. • Requiring the possession/use of a device capable of quickly cutting the leader or hook when targeting sharks when fishing from shore or a vessel. • Defining beach, chumming and shore-based shark fisher. This includes changes to how shore-based shark fisher is defined.

Yamaha Goes Big With Their New 19-foot Center Console When Yamaha Boats entered the center console category in 2015 with their first gen 19-foot 190 FSH, skeptics questioned if Yamaha could compete in the segment in the same way the “Rev Your Heart” brand dominates the 19-foot, 21-foot, and 24-foot bowrider category. Just three years later, Yamaha clapped back by winning Boating Magazine’s coveted Boat of the Year honor with their 21-foot 210 FSH. For 2019, Yamaha upped the ante with a complete refresh of the 190 FSH Series. Yamaha’s 19’ center console boats return with an all-new deck and hull design that is 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than previous year models. With the added space, Yamaha engineers increased storage capacity and improved overall functionality. From bow to stern, there is not another 19’ center console boat as spacious or more comfortable. Under the waterline, the longer, wider hull is designed for added comfort too, favoring characteristics that reduce bow rise when accelerating and hull packing when operating in choppy water conditions. Another significant improvement included on all Yamaha boats for 2019 is a new V-shaped reverse bucket that enhances handling when in reverse, a redesigned Articulating Keel that reduces drag, and a new compliment of corrosion resistance measures to protect the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts. The new V-Bucket works by diverting water thrust laterally (not down) to take advantage of the benefits of side thrust. The redesigned Articulating Keel is thinner and with tighter tolerances to reduce drag while maintaining all its low-speed handling benefits. And to increase corrosion resistance to the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts, a three-step process that combines Alumite, a ceramic coating, and expoxy paint has been added. Most Usable Deck Layout Ever in a 19’ Center Console Starting at the bow, the storage compartments are larger and open wider than
before. To help keep tackle and other essentials organized, Plano storage trays are integrated into the new portside mini-pod storage compartment, and on the starboard side, the mini pod opens into a huge storage area. These padded mini pods also serve as convenient ingress and egress points. The bow platform is wider than previous models, and the bow platform hatch is wider too, providing better access and more light for stowing or retrieving gear. The bench seat and front of the center console lifts up to reveal an extra deep, large storage area that can also serve as a changing room or head compartment, thanks to the curtain enclosure included on Deluxe and Sport models. The entryway to this compartment is redesigned to make ingress and egress easier. This compartment can also store equipment and recreational items and offers convenient access to the backside of the helm for easy service and installation of aftermarket marine electronics. On the sides of the center console are six vertical rod holders, three on each side. Four additional rod holders are located under the gunnels on the port and starboard sides. With the addition of four flush-mount rod holders on the deck, there are 14 rod holders across the boat. The Sport version adds four more rocket launchers on the T-top. The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, GPS unit, and other marine electronics. Also included is Yamaha’s 4.3” touchscreen Connext control system featuring a brand-new user interface in 2019, and conveniently-placed rocker switches for Yamaha’s No Wake Mode and Cruise Assist, along with bilge, horn and other vital functions.

resentation holds the key to catching fish. That cardinal rule proves just as valid for critters that hunker down on the sea floor as it does for more glamorous denizens in the upper level of the water column. If a bait isn’t in the zone where the fish happen to be or if it doesn’t behave in a natural and realistic manner, it will be ignored. Sinkers are a vital aspect of fishing success. Their mission goes well beyond the task of simply dragging a bait to the bottom or some midpoint in the water column. View them as part of the total presentation package. That includes such factors as sink rate, whether it anchors a bait or allows it to drift, and as an aid in casting. If you’re going to troll, sinkers help to adjust the depth at which each bait or lure is moving through the water. With very few exceptions, select the lightest sinker that will carry your offering to the bottom or the desired depth. Don’t assume that if 1 ounce does the job, 2 ounces are better. Not only do heavier weights keep the bait or lure from looking like a tempting morsel, they make the hook-up process more difficult. Remember that when an unsuspecting fish inhales an offering, it must drag the sinker along before the hook will embed in its jaw. Line diameter plays a major role in determining the weight of the sinker you will need. Generally, the finer the diameter of the line you are using, the less weight you need to achieve the same results in a given situation. As an example, the bottom bouncer who insists on using 30-pound test line needs a heavier sinker than someone using 20-pound test. Sinker shape helps to determine sink rate. The fastest, freefalling sinkers have the weight concentrated at the bottom, tend to be very compact and are streamlined. It’s important to note, however, that fast-falling sinkers have a tendency to cause the
hook and tag end of the leader to wrap around the standing part during the drop. In most situations, it proves more effective if the sinker will drift across the bottom rather than anchor the rig in one place. If you’re trolling, sinker choice should include enough weight to keep the bait or lure at the preferred depth. No assortment of sinkers is complete without split shots, bullet weights, pinch-ons, and twist-ons. These can be added very easily to make minor adjustments to the weight of the primary sinker. Sinkers come in many different shapes, and each shape has a specific purpose. It’s important to choose a shape designed to do the job you expect. The right sinker for the task at hand will increase your catch rate significantly, and that’s the easiest way to turn an average day on the water into a memorable one.

s responsible anglers, we want to do everything we can to return bycatch safely. Anyone who’s fished bottoms deeper than 30 feet has probably experienced the “floating fish syndrome.” This is caused by barotrauma, an expansion of the fish’s air bladder as they are brought up from depth. Signs of barotrauma include eyes popping, stomach extending out of the mouth, intestines extending out of the anus and bloating. These fish will not be able to descend upon release and are subject to predation. Thanks to a NOAA grant, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to develop an interactive online tutorial detailing fish-handling and release techniques
that give fish the best chance of survival. In 2018, anglers fishing waters of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida released more than 2 million red snapper. Even a 5 percent increase in survivorship would save 100,000 red snapper a year. All those surviving fish would remain in the stock. The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council includes bycatch mortality as part of their population estimates that determine seasons and catch limits. MONSTER BROWN CAUGHT ON WHITE RIVER

ou don’t see a brown trout like this one every day. This massive and battle-scarred bruiser was caught and released by Paden Flippen on Arkansas’ White River below Bull Shoals Dam on June 14. The 36.7-pound monster was a fitting present for the angler, who celebrated his 24th birthday that day. The White River is well known for producing gigantic trout. This system of hatchery-supported tailwaters has the food sources and habitat for rainbow, brown, brook and even cutthroat trout to reach almost unbelievable sizes. Flippin guides for Cotter Trout Dock and said he and other guides had been tracking this big brown for more than a year. If he had decided to keep it for certification, Flippen’s big trout would have fallen just shy of the state record, which is held by a 40-pound, 4-ounce beast that was caught from the Little Red River back in 1992. That fish, caught by Rip Collins, was the world record up until 2013, when an angler in New Zealand caught a 42-pound, 1-ounce brown trout.

few inches until it can deliver the fly ever so softly. Always carry extra spools of leader material to meet this problem. Once again, your leader length is often determined by the fishing conditions. If the wind is howling and you are having a difficult time rolling over your fly, shorten the leader. If conditions are glass-slick, the fish will be spooky. You will need a much longer cast, so lengthen your leader and reduce the size and weight of your fly.
THE BASIC SALTWATER LEADER: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The leader is the connection between fisherman and fish. If tied incorrectly, not only will it be difficult to cast, it will also be responsible for losing saltwater gamefish. I prefer a 9-foot leader when fishing saltwater, although there are occasions when a 10-foot leader is needed. A good leader can turn over the large, heavy flies used in saltwater fly fishing. I will often start my day with a longer leader, and reduce its length depending on the demands of weather conditions and efficiency in properly delivering the fly. The leader is a simple equation: 4x3x2. I have found this the preferred method to construct a solid saltwater leader: • 4 feet of 40-pound stiff mono; • 3 feet of 30-pound mono, and • 2 feet of 20-pound mono. This system works well with lighter tippets as well. If I need to add a lighter tippet, I shorten the heavy 40-pound butt section to keep the overall leader length 9 feet, adding the light tippet to the 20-pound test on the fly end of the leader. How the fly lands on the water is important. You want the fly to land as softly as a whisper. If, however, your leader is too long, a heavy fly will hit the water as loudly as a thrown rock. The noise will alert every fish in the vicinity. I usually solve this problem by shortening the leader and cutting off a
There are times when a shorter leader is needed. The short leader makes it easier to cast a heavy fly into the wind. I will often shorten leaders to fewer than 7 feet when dealing with very strong winds. It’s good to remember that shallow-water fish are less spooky under windy conditions. Therefore, they will often swim within close range of the angler without being spooked. I believe the wind and the distortion it creates on the water’s surface acts as a barrier to the world above the surface, making the fish feel more secure. I’ve witnessed this on many occasions when tarpon, redfish and permit swim within a rod’s length of me while the wind was blowing 20 knots.
