ailfish are on the move off the coast of southeast Florida. It happens every year as the first cold fronts make their way south and bring cooler temperatures and northerly winds. Highly migratory in nature, these acrobatic pelagics can be caught here year round, but the highest concentrations occur from November through April. Techniques for targeting sailfish vary depending on location. In Stuart, trolling dead ballyhoo with dredges in the spread is the most popular method. Off Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, kite fishing with live bait on the drift is the go-to technique. In the Florida Keys,
it could be a combination of both or it could be sight fishing with a few live pitch baits ready to throw at a hungry sailfish. Regardless of location, wind and sea conditions change constantly and play a huge role in determining the best fishing technique on any given day. The best sailfish bite happens during tailing conditions. Typically, tailing conditions occur right after a cold front passes, while the western edge of the Gulf Stream is in close proximity to the coast. When the strong north current of the Gulf Stream clashes with strong winds from the opposite direction, it fires sailfish up into a feeding frenzy. In tailing conditions, it is not uncommon for the top sailfish boats in the fleet to catch and release 20 or more sailfish in a day. Not everyone can afford the expensive electric reels and other gear required for kite or dredge fishing, but anyone who owns a boat with outriggers can slow troll or bump troll baits to get tight with arguably the most majestic gamefish in the ocean. You will need four 20- to 30-pound conventional outfits. Since sailfish are capable of swimming at high speeds, you want reels with at least a 5:1 gear ratio and high line capacity. Connect the main line to 6 to 8 feet of 40-pound fluorocarbon leader with a small barrel swivel. Tie an inline circle hook to the business end. Use a 7/0 hook for larger baits such as blue runners or goggle eyes. For smaller baits like pilchards or cigar minnows, use a 5/0 hook. Deploy the two outrigger baits first with one long and one short. Then send out your flat lines from the corners with one short and one long. Once your spread is out, position your boat down-sea and keep it moving forward slowly by putting the boat in and out of gear. Keep an eye on your spread, as sailfish will sometimes show up out of nowhere. Sailfish tend to swim in packs, so it’s a good idea to keep a 20-pound spinning outfit ready to go with a live pitch bait. Once you get your fish to the boat, grab it by the bill and remove the hook. don’t throw much anymore. I don’t throw them except for around the spawn, but it sure does work that time of year! JD: What was your most productive technique this year? Lester: A wacky rig, especially early in the season. It’s always huge for me during and around the spawn. It just gets bites and catches big fish, too. I put fish in the boat using the Mustad Titan X Wacky Neko hook with an X Zone Lures True Center Stick. I fish it on the MHX NEPS 81MXF. That rod was my MVP this season too.

JD: Speaking of MHX rods, you’re well-known for building your own custom rods on tour. What rods will you build this off-season? By JD Blackburn JD: How did your Bassmaster Elite Series season go this year? Lester: I finished in sixth place in the Toyota Angler of the Year point standings and also finished sixth in the 2019 Bassmaster Classic. Those were both career-best marks. JD: What one new piece of equipment did you adopt this year that really helped you? Lester: The new C-Map card from Lowrance Electronics. Case in point: on Lake Guntersville this year, I fished structure I had no idea was in existence on that lake. The detail the card has on it is just amazing.

he world’s largest and longest-running watersports and beach/ resort lifestyle show is a best-kept secret for retailers of fishing apparel and accessories. Surf Expo launched its Bluewater category in January 2018 with some of the hottest brands in fishing. Since then, angling has become an integral part of the twice-annual show, which returns to Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center Jan. 8-10. Savvy buyers will find that today’s Surf Expo is a lot more than surf. Featuring internationally influential brands from all facets of watersports, Surf Expo is the show that drives water-lifestyle trends each season. It is geared toward buyers seeking to stock their shelves, which makes it a unique opportunity for retailers to get ahead of the market’s next big thing. Bluewater is where buyers can find all the freshwater and saltwater fishing and marine lifestyle apparel and accessory brands grouped together in one easy-to-shop area of the show floor. Since Bluewater’s inception, more and more marinas, tackle shops and outfitters have discovered that Surf Expo is a very convenient way to shop all their mainstay apparel and accessory brands and then easily browse other products they need such as sunscreens, sunglasses, coolers, T-shirts and PFDs. feet; the fish are swimming along the trough looking for baitfish. When there’s bait around the trough (the deep channel where the breakers hit the beach), there are fish. Look for birds. When there are birds diving around the trough, the fish are near. There are several techniques I use to catch fish.

urf ’s up! Grab your spincaster and head for the beach. I just moved to Hutchinson Island, one of the barrier islands on Florida’s Treasure Coast, and I’ve had a lot of fun fishing the surf early in the morning and late in the evening. I’ve averaged several snook per trip, with a few jacks, plus bluefish and mackerel. My best hour so far was four snook, a dozen jack, two ladyfish, two bluefish and a mackerel. Now that’s an action packed 60 minutes, and the best thing is you don’t have to cast more than 30

TACKLE: I use a spincasting reel with 10-pound braided line and a clear 20-pound fluro or mono leader. Tie 2 feet of leader onto the braid with a double uni knot, and then tie your lure on with a loop knot so it moves more freely. I use a 3/8- or ½-ounce jig with a D.O.A. paddletail either in pearl white or silver sparkle. I like the lighter weight, but it’s harder to cast. Silver spoons and topwaters are my secondary lures. THE SURF: you want some wave action, and rough surf is better than calm, but if it’s too rough the jig doesn’t stay in the strike zone long enough. Always fish into or toward the wind so you keep in contact with the lure. TECHNIQUE: I wear shorts and stand in the shallow wash. You don’t have to get wet. After a wave breaks, fish the backside between waves, jigging gently and keeping some tension on the line. When a wave overtakes the lure, keep in touch with it and let it tumble until the wave crashes on the beach. Then fish the backwash on the beach side of the trough. If you fish perpendicular to the trough, the lure is only in the trough for a few seconds. If you cast parallel to the beach, the lure stays in the trough longer and you have better action. Remember, the fish are feeding in 6 inches of water sometimes and can even strike in the backwash. Keep tension on the fish when you get one on, and lower your rod tip so Spanish, snook and bluefish won’t jump as much. When a fish rides the wave into the shore, you’ll need to reel fast to keep tension or they will flip off. Where to Fish: Any beach access is good, but look for birds and activity. No birds, consider moving to another beach access. I like the St. Lucie beaches in the Herman’s Bay area and the beaches near the inlets. he second annual Lenny Schelin Jr. Memorial will take place December 27, 2019 to January 4, 2020. Lenny Schelin, 33, was a wellknown and well-liked professional fishing mate from Fort Pierce who lost his battle with a rare form of brain cancer, glioblastoma, in July 2018. Schelin, regarded as a world class angler with excellent bait rigging skills, worked aboard the sailfish tournament boat Lo Que Sea, crewed aboard Southern Kingfish Association tournament teams, fished in competitive inshore and

offshore fishing tournaments and crewed aboard sportfishing boats on fishing excursions to the Bahamas and beyond. The week-long tournament will open with the captains’ meeting and kickoff party beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, December 27 at Cobb’s Landing at Fort Pierce City Marina, 1 Avenue A, Fort Pierce. There will be awards and cash prizes for sailfish releases and “meat fish” divisions. Entry is $1,500 per boat for the sailfish division and $500 per boat for the meat fish division. Anglers fishing in this division will target aggregate weight for a combination of dolphin, tuna, wahoo, cobia, kingfish and grouper. Eligible catches must weigh a minimum of 10 pounds. Cobia minimum 33 inches to the fork. Teams may weigh a single fish of each species. Teams may sign up for both divisions; combined entry fee is $2000. Of the eight elibigle days to fish, teams may choose to fish three of the fishing days and may fish out of St. Lucie or Fort Pierce inlet. Teams may weigh-in at either Fort Pierce City Marina, Fish Heads of Stuart, or Little Jim Bait and Tackle. An awards party will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 4 at Little Jim Bait and Tackle on the north causeway at 601 N. Causeway, Fort Pierce. It will feature live music, food, and live and silent auctions with items ranging from fishing charters,

Are On the Move! T
he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is reminding the public to slow down and look out for these large aquatic mammals. As cooler weather comes to the Sunshine State, manatees begin to migrate to warmer waters. During this time of year, many of Florida’s over 7,000 manatees will be on the move. Warm-water habitats, like Florida’s springs, are critical to the survival of manatees during the winter because they can’t tolerate water temperatures lower than 68 degrees for extended periods of time. Remember, disturbing manatees at warm-water sites may cause them to leave those areas at a time when it is critical for them to remain there. “Manatees are more vulnerable in the winter months and it’s important not to disturb them, especially at warm-water sites,” said Ron Mezich, who leads the FWC’s Imperiled Species Management Section. “Getting too close to manatees can cause them to leave these critical areas at a time when it is important for them to stay in warm water habitats.” Boaters can make a big difference for manatees by following guidelines and obeying manatee protection zones marked by waterway signs. How can you help manatees? • Wear polarized sunglasses to spot them moving, grazing and resting in the water. Keep a lookout for the circular “footprints” or ripples they leave on the surface of the water. • Follow posted manatee zones. • Observe manatees from a distance to limit disturbance. t took all year, but December finally arrived. Sailfish, mahi, blackfin, grouper and swords are the target species for this month and it’s the best it’s been in a while, so get out there. Extreme cold fronts swept across the northeast starting in early November this year, and the sooner and colder it gets up there, the better it is down here. Most of the species above prefer water temps between 70-80 degrees during the winter months and temps colder than the mid-60s send them running south. Big schools of bait have already started to show up along the beaches and reefs, so now all we need is the water above us to cool down a little more. With each cold front expect a

new body of fish to make their way down into our area. If the bait sticks around, there is no reason for sails, dolphin and other predators to keep going. Live bait works well this time of year, but you’ll notice most of the locals trolling for the first half of the season. This not only lets us prepare for the upcoming sailfish tournaments which are dead bait, but it allows us to cover more ground and get a better idea of where the fish are. A spread of four or five small ballyhoo rigged on circle hooks and a dredge or two along with a daisy chain as teasers works great.
Let your baits dictate the speed, but usually somewhere between 4.5 and 6.5 knots is where you want to be with the best depths usually between 100-200. The fishing industry has really made some huge advances over the last few years and since it’s December I figured I’d give you a quick list for Santa: 1. If you don’t already have side scan sonar, get it! HumminBird Solix units have changed the game. 2. Longer, stiffer outriggers. Rupp Marine has new 22-foot long carbon fiber outriggers which turn a center console’s spread into the footprint of
a much larger sportfish. 3. A set of electric downriggers. Cannon 10TS with auto deploy, auto up, stop and prospect mode. he fall fishing has been great with lots of options to try in the river and along the coast. The pompano bite has started inshore close to the inlet and the Sailfish Flats. For bait, we use sand fleas on a double hook chicken-rig with a two-ounce pyramid weight. While our baits are out, we also cast ⅜-ounce pompano jigs and bounce them along the bottom. I’ve done best with outgoing tide,
but still catch them with incoming tide. It’s fun to drive the boat 5-to10 miles-per-hour circling around Sailfish Flats in 3-to-5 feet of water looking for “skipping pompano”. Basically, the boat makes them jump next to your boat, or behind your boat, sometimes on their side like a skipping rock thrown on the surface. When you see this, immediately turn off your motor and throw your bait and jigs. There is lots of Spanish mackerel and bluefish in the river and along the beaches right now. Walking the beach and casting a ½-ounce Gulfstream Flash Minnow Jig (chartreuse) is always fun on a decent day with clear skies and winds 10to-15 miles-per-hour or less. Some other good surf lures are Kastmaster Spoons, Giles Jigs, and Got-Cha 1-ounce plugs. Surfcasting from the beach with bait is another option for pompano. We use 10-to-12 foot rods with a 2 or 3 hook chicken-rig baited with sand fleas, clams, or Fishbites

Flavored Artificial Bait. Your rig should have a 3-to-5 ounce pyramid weight or “spider weight” (very useful). Incoming tide is always best for surfcasting pompano. Snook season ends December 15 and there has been lots of keepers caught in the St. Lucie River near
the bridges and docks. The winter is a great time to cruise the mangrove shorelines of the North and South Forks casting D.O.A. C.A.L. Jigs and Giles Jigs. We’ve also been catching occasional big jacks and Spanish mackerel back there. Enjoy your holidays everybody!

T
his year has flown by! Here it is December already and the holidays are almost upon us. Both inshore and offshore fishing have provided anglers with many great fishing adventures. We managed the hurricane season with some luck. You can see the seagrass making a comeback to the Treasure
Coast. Hopefully, this winter will be milder, the water quality improves, and the fishing is great for everyone. Trout, redfish and snook will be targets throughout the winter. Snook season closes December 15, but many anglers will still play catch and release with them. Fishing around bridges, docks and inlets can bring great action with snook hanging around the deeper waters of the river. Trout will tend to hang around the deeper cuts of the river. Move off to three to six feet of water for trout. Live shrimp on popping corks or D.O.A. Deadly Combos will work the best for them. Redfish can be found around local docks during the winter months and a live shrimp or D.O.A. Shrimp can entice them into striking. Don't forget about the deeper cuts along the mangroves for redfish and snook in December. Using stealth is essential when

fishing the shallow waters for redfish. We had very good success at finding the reds in shallow on sunny days on the grass flats. A mild winter will have them feeding
in the shallows this month. Pompano are already arriving in the area and not only provide great fishing action, but fantastic table fare. Spanish mackerel and bluefish will continue to hang out in their favorite haunts of the river. Jack crevalle will be traveling around in packs chasing bait all over the river. Flounder should arrive soon and hang around the inlets, docks and sandy flats of the river. Ladyfish is a great way to spend a few hours with the kids on the water. The bridges will be holding sheepshead, black drum, croakers and sand perch for those anglers. There is a good variety of fish to target on any given day in any kind of weather conditions. Remember, fishing is not just another hobby, it's an ADVENTURE! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Fighting one of these beautiful, high-speed fish will leave you both breathless and in awe, creating an experience that will last a lifetime. Look for the baitfish around the reefs as a good indicator of where to throw the lines out. Cobia will also surface and can make for a pleasant addition to a day of fishing. Trolling rigged ballyhoo or mackerel while keeping a pitch rod standing by will get you in the game. Be sure to take advantage of weather windows as fishing will be hot and the weather nice and cool. he inshore fishing for December should start to get red hot as the month goes along. Starting with the Fort Pierce Inlet, look for Spanish mackerel and bluefish to start showing up. These fish will hit just about anything starting with spoons, Got-Cha Jigs and Flash Jigs. Make sure you use a small piece of leader wire as they both are toothy and will take your jigs. As the cooler weather shows up you can look for plenty of big trout
edges, sand bars and along the flats. A pompano rig with a sand flea, shrimp, Fish Bites or a pompano jig will work just fine.

I like a medium action rod with 20-pound main line and a 30-pound fluorocarbon leader. Remember when it is cold you will need to slow your retrieve down. beaches all along the Treasure Coast begin to fill up with snowbird surf fishermen in December, and for good reason. Schools of pompano cruise the troughs and sandbars along the coast hunting down sand fleas, crabs, clams, and glass minnows. Pompano, a favorite eating fish, is also an excellent gamefish on light tackle. Ten-plus-foot surf rods with three hook pompano rigs is the standard technique for both pompano and the tasty whiting that share the surf with them, but casting Goofy Jigs on light spinning gear can be very productive when the surf is calm and clean. Live sand fleas are top bait followed by cut clams and pieces of fresh shrimp. Blues and Spanish macks will also keep surf fishermen
and boaters busy along the coast in December. Cut bait, spoons, jigs and gotcha plugs are all good choices for these toothy gamesters.

Although the Sebastian River is usually a last-ditch spot to get away from wintery weather in December, the mild temperatures this fall could have snook and tarpon continuing to be viable options for anglers in the Sebastian River during the last month of 2019. If cold weather does make an appearance, trout, bluefish, pompano ladyfish and jacks can keep anglers busy by bouncing jigs in the deeper areas of the north fork.

ecember is a great month for offshore fishing out of Sebastian. We usually get some gorgeous weather days and it’s not crowded with boats out there. Bottom fishing should be solid. Grouper and snapper get back into those winter patterns in the water depths of 60 to 100 feet. Fish the reefs that are holding baitfish. The quality fish will be close by. Go with live bait if you can and slow drift these fishy areas. Anchoring slightly up current of fishy areas and chumming will work too. Often the large mangrove snapper will rise into the chum line. For the mangroves you’ll need to downsize your tackle. Try some 30-pound fluorocarbon leader on a spinning rod with a 1/0 hook. Hide the hook in a small piece of cut bait. Always watch for threadfin herring (aka greenies) outside of the inlet. Often the bait will be bunched up three to four miles outside the inlet. Hopefully large schools will be flipping on the surface. If not, look for birds and red masses on your depth finder. A few dozen greenies in the live well will pay off with quality
fish throughout the day. Sebastian can be the hot spot for sail fishing this month. Most years the area between Sebastian and Fort Pierce, in that 130-to-200 foot range, produces lots of sails. They bunch up in this area before the cold fronts of late December and January push them south. It is a time when the south Florida sailfish pros envy us. The best action comes from drifting and slow trolling live bait but trolling with specialized gear like dredges, teasers and swimming ballyhoo/ mullet will score too. Of course, dolphin, blackfins and other fish will be mixed in. December is also the month when kingfish start to congregate in large schools and as a result, the commercial boats often converge on our area. These fish will be in the 10-to-20-pound range and will bunch up at various depths between 50 and 100 feet. Often, you will notice schools of bait on your depth finder at mid-depths. The big red marks just below the bait are often kingfish. They will come to the surface especially early and late in the day for trolled ballyhoo rigs. The sure-fire way is to drift live baits down to the depths they are patrolling. Use light tackle to really enjoy these gamesters and don’t forget to use a few inches of wire to prevent cut-offs. ecember's fishing for the land angler is very diverse. Bass fishing one day and saltwater fishing the very next day. This is the time of year when I like to do all different types of fishing. Wade fishing early for seatrout and redfish can be on fire especially during the incoming tide when warmer water will flush into the river. If you can plan an early morning incoming tide fishing trip it is almost guaranteed to be a great fishing trip. Keep in mind there could still be some mullet around, but this
is normally a transition time. So, you could have fish that could be keyed in on big baits one day and the very next day they could want smaller baits. This time of the year my catchall bait is normally the Bass Assassin Sea Shad in the Electric Chicken or Panhandle Moon color with a ¼-ounce jig head. fish the whole water column. And don't be afraid to add a little scent to your rubber bait. This could make the difference on cold days. Beach fishing is also something I do a lot of in December. I try to plan my beach trips according to the tides. And I love doing some bass fishing in the afternoon time. This is when the weather is just perfect out. ith the arrival of late fall and heading toward early winter, the water temperatures in Lake Okeechobee are FINALLY dropping. The water level is high enough to provide access to the marsh areas as well as the shoreline cover. Savvy anglers eagerly anticipate the first wave of large female bass as they move along the shallow shorelines, where they gorge themselves preparing for the spawn. From late October into December, Lake Okeechobee’s bass go into feeding mode. They are chasing and eating shiners, shad and whatever food morsels that are available. Once the bass locate a food source they will hang out in that particular area as long a food is

available. Last year we located a spot early in October that bass frequented fall, winter and spring, with bass coming and going in conjunction with the moon phases. We were able to catch bass in this same area during pre-spawn, spawn and post spawn. It is not easy or normal to find a spot that will produce big bass and large numbers of bass. We fished this productive area many different ways and from many different angles. At times during the season the fish

would be holding in one single piece of cover along the area, other days they would be scattered along the whole stretch. Don’t misunderstand, there were a few days when we were hard pressed to catch fish in our number one spot and we would have to move to another area to catch fish. Each year as we have fished Lake Okeechobee, we have learned something different about the lake. Many times, it is very subtle and only becomes clear after much retrospect. Bass fishing is a wonderful sport and I can honestly say that I still get very excited when a big bass comes to the boat. Late fall fishing on Lake Okeechobee is second to none. The sheer number of bass in the six to ten-pound range is incredible. Traffic is relatively low since many of our visitors from the North aren’t here yet. The days are mild, and the bass are biting. It just doesn’t get much better in the bass fishing world. The northwest side of Lake Okeechobee is loaded with, eel grass, pepper grass and other great cover elements where big bass love
to hold. From the east side of the lake at J&S Fish Camp all the way around the north end of the lake to the Point of the Reef, bass are already being caught in good numbers. Each year it’s only a matter of timing until the bass are triggered to start their late fall feeding spree. It happens suddenly and without fail, one day the bass will be of average size and the next day you might catch four or five bass over seven pounds. Crappie fishing will start to fire up as well as the water cools and will always be better before the full moon. They can be caught on jigs, and below a bobber with minnows. The limit for Okeechobee is still 25 fish over 10 inches. Specks can still be caught up to two pounds, with many fish coming in the one pound plus range. People come in droves to the lake in late November and early December to catch these fish because of their fantastic table fare. Catching specks on an ultra-light rod with four-pound test line and a jig is one of my personal favorites.

D
ive conditions in December are quite predictable since one to two possibilities generally happen this month. Passing cold fronts are common but are usually interrupted with a calm spell that can last a week or more. Divers who plan around cold fronts or who are ready to take advantage of calm seas can expect good visibility during December. Provided big swells steer clear of the area, visibility typically returns fast to local waters after wind swells have cleared out. Cold fronts are a part of life on the Treasure Coast this time of year and overcast days may be a blessing in disguise for the savvy hunter. Cloudy days mean less sunlight on the bottom, making it easier to sneak up on smart fish that would otherwise see a diver
coming and take off. Less ambient light at depth may also confuse large fish into thinking darkness is approaching too. It has been noted that big hogfish come into shallow water to sleep and on overcast days they may be found in much shallower water than usual. After hitting the bottom, many times spearfishermen have only seconds to react before large fish swim off out of reach. Loading spearguns while descending may help divers capitalize on an early shot and increase the chances of landing a nice fish. Water temperatures this year are still relatively warm with upper 70s common through the month. As noted last month, packing mask, fins, snorkel, speargun on fishing trips even when diving is not the priority can be a productive way to capitalize on floating debris. Cobia are around too this time of year and freediving/snorkeling can be a great way to land a big one if the bite has shut off. While fishing during calm spells this month, cobia

International Fishing Mecca F or the second year in a row, I was excited to get a visit from 17 students and 2 teachers from Norway, traveling all the way to Stuart for 12 days to experience our beautiful Martin County and our great fishery on the Treasure Coast. We fished a lot from the beaches and my boat, and caught all kinds of fish including shark, tarpon, snook, lookdown, ladyfish, sheepshead, largemouth bass, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and jacks. Using live bait, lures and fly was the perfect mix to keep them busy. My personal fishing highlight was getting them their first fish on fly, like Sigrid with her first snook, and Trond and Albert with their first tarpon. Albert’s was actually a giant golden river tarpon which we landed in under 15 minutes using the fighting method I described in last month's column. Annual MIATC Holiday Boat Parades Set to Sail G
et ready to deck those towers and trim those transoms with holiday decor for the Marine Industries Association’s annual holiday boat parade tradition. Three parades, three different locations, and all free for spectators and participants. On Saturday, Dec. 7, parades will be held both in Stuart and in Fort Pierce. And the Vero Beach parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. The Martin County parade will begin at the Jensen Beach Causeway at 6 p.m. and travel to Sandsprit Park and proceed to The Twisted Tuna in Port Salerno, arriving there at approximately 7:45 p.m. where winners will be announced. Prime viewing locations will include downtown Jensen Beach, the U.S. Sailing Center, Indian Riverside Park, Stuart Causeway, eastern side of Sewall’s Point, Sandsprit Park, and the Manatee Pocket. The Fort Pierce parade will begin at Taylor Creek near Harbortown
Marina at 6:30 p.m. and will proceed past the South Beach Causeway turning around at the Fort Pierce Inlet at approximately 7:00 p.m., then end at the Fort Pierce City Marina at approximately 7:45 p.m.

lorida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission workshops are designed primarily for women; however, it is an excellent opportunity for anyone 18 years of age or older to learn the outdoor skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, and a variety of outdoor pursuits. These workshops focus on the learning of outdoor skills. We strive to offer a variety of topics in our workshops, balanced between hunting/shooting, fishing and non-consumptive (canoeing, camping, etc.) activities. This workshop is for you if . . . • You have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn. • You are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills. • You know how to do some of these activities, but would like to try your hand at some new ones. • You enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals. A workshop consists of four sessions, lasting three and one-half hours each. The workshop is held at the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp in the JW Corbett management area to keep cost to a minimum. This is a rustic camp facility. Lodging is dormitory-style. Meals are served at designated times, cafeteria-style. The registration fee for these workshops is $200, with a $25 early registration discount; however, the fee will ultimately be determined by the availability of facilities and the number of volunteer instructors. The registration fee typically includes instruction in the topics you choose, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, lodging and all meals starting with lunch on Friday through lunch on Sunday. Workshops and topics are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships. Limited funds are available for scholarships to first-time participants. Florida Grouper with Citrus Salad INGREDIENTS: • 4 (6 ounce) Florida grouper fillets • 3 Florida oranges, peeled, seeded and segmented • 2 Florida grapefruit, peeled, seeded and segmented • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar • ¼ cup fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped • 1 bulb fennel, thinly sliced • ½ cup jicama, peeled and julienned • Olive oil for cooking • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions: Combine the fennel, jicama, citrus segments, olive oil, vinegar and parsley in a large bowl. Season
with salt and pepper and mix thoroughly. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly season grouper fillets with salt and pepper. Carefully place the fillets into preheated pan. Sear for two to three minutes on each side or until completely done. For those who do not want to fish the tournament, we have other ways to donate, including individual contributions, sponsorships, donated auction items, and bidding for the incredible prizes that have been donated for this event,” said event coordinator Donna Qvarnstrom. “We are fighting diligently to find the source of this rare form of brain cancer that has had a major impact in our community. The Islands Of The Bahamas State Of The Business Tourism Update What's Open, Rebuilding and Recovering
More than three months has passed since Hurricane Dorian made landfall on two northern islands of The Bahamas. Already, Grand Bahama Island is rebounding with many of its hotels and attractions reopened and plans for its airport to resume international service soon. While The Abacos face a longer road to recovery, the country remains resilient and steadfast in its commitment to help the island rebuild by maintaining a healthy flow of tourism – which accounts for half of the country’s GDP – to the islands that were not affected by the storm.

• Nassau and Paradise Island This pair of islands which are home to the country’s most extensive array of resorts, hotels, restaurants and tour operators, were not affected by Hurricane Dorian and are operating
normally. With seasonal hotel incentives and increased airlift, it is easier than ever for travelers to visit. • The Out Islands - With the exception of The Abacos, the Out Islands are open and operating as usual. Some resorts and lodges take a fall hiatus for annual leave or renewal projects, but there are many options for accommodations. Airports, government ports and marinas are open across the islands. • Grand Bahama Island Grand Bahama Island is back to business welcoming travelers at its cruise port. Ferries and cruise lines, including Balearia, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, are already bringing travelers to Freeport to experience a number of excursions and sites that have reopened. The airport is operating domestic flights via temporary facilities. Numerous hotels and resorts are already open
• The Abacos - Abaco has the longest road to recovery with virtually no viable options for leisure tourism in the near future. The current focus is on re-opening local government complexes and restoring basic services to facilitate rebuilding. • Response to Hurricane Dorian - As the capital of The Bahamas and the home of the country’s government, Nassau is also a central hub for the Hurricane Dorian recovery process. Persons that have been displaced by the storm are being accommodated on the island, with the most recent information from The Bahamas National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) indicating that 895 individuals are being housed across six shelters. • How to Help - One of the best things people can do to help, now more than ever is to visit. The Bahamas is open for business and still delivering the tropical getaway the country is known for. Organization Creates Operation Topaz in Abaco and Grand Bahama
In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a number of yachters have jumped on board with relief efforts by employing eight private yachts to provide aid to Abaco and Grand Bahama. YachtAid Global (YAG) is a nonprofit organization (NGO) dedicated to undertaking conservation, humanitarian and disaster relief work in communities that are located on the cruising routes of private yachts. After Hurricane Dorian demolished much of Abaco and Grand Bahama in September, officials of YachtAid did not hesitate to contact the Bahamas’ National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). “We are the only yachting disaster response NGO to cooperate with the United Nations around the world. During disaster relief work, we have three guiding principles: the right aid, the right people and at the right time,” explained Founder and Executive Director of YachtAid Mark Drewelow. “We operate on the pull, not the push system, which means that we
take action based on verified needs assessments and we don’t take guesses at what people need to push supplies into the system.” Before Hurricane Dorian even made landfall, YachtAid crafted Operation Topaz. The proactive initiative netted thousands of donations of water, lifesaving, comfort, rebuilding and school supplies. Nearly two months later, Drewelow said the organization continues to provide aid and hopes to continue to assist with the rebuilding of Abaco and Grand Bahama. “We continue to work at the UN level and incorporate industry best practices in all that we do. Using those guidelines, we collaborate with our on the ground partners, then find volunteer boats that offer to move the cargo. We expect to be involved in various types of ongoing recovery and rebuild work in Grand Bahama and the Abacos for months and years to come,” he said.

Throughout the two-day event, each vendor had representatives that shared valuable information regarding their products as well as offering financial assistance to guides to update and improve equipment to better serve their clientele. The push to end using plastics has been a theme in recent years spearheaded by Costa and Yeti. We encourage all boaters and anglers alike to stop using plastics. Plastics are not ‘biofriendly’ and never go away. They are killing our fish, birds and mammals. Contests were held for guides to prove their ability in areas such as knot tying, poling, fly-casting and other events. Prizes were provided by the vendors and given to the winners of each event to encourage participation. The camaraderie that we shared proved that we are all a family. One of the most important educational highlights of the event included the presentation by Captains for Clean Water founders, Chris Whitman and Daniel Andrews. They have been a relentless force in getting federal, state and local officials to take action on the devastation that we have been experiencing in regard to damaging water releases from Lake Okeechobee and other problems contributing to algae blooms and red tide. Federal, state and local funding has been acquired to support these
actions, as a result of their efforts. We are already starting to see positive results. Supporters and members of Captains for Clean Water have all gotten on board. Continued support and contributions to this organization are necessary to ensure that our fisheries are cleaned up and that Florida remains the Fishing Capital of The World for today, tomorrow and beyond. The September event in Jensen Beach, a springtime event on the upper east coast as well as a summer event on the Great Lakes. Each of these events are important to all people as they will provide education and actions that will protect all waters from plastic debris, toxic chemicals and developments that cause water pollutants and problems for our oceans, rivers and lakes. It is easy to understand the need for all to support the agendas as developed and laid out by the above vendors and leaders for clean waters and habits, as our future depends on it. You can do your part by not littering the waters with plastics, fishing lines, cigarette butts and other debris that defeat the efforts.

I
t’s the holiday season, a time of giving and good cheer, and divers are as ready as any to participate. One source of good cheer is supporting good causes. Humanitarian causes are typically linked to this season, but we can feel good about aiding organizations focused on our diving environment, too. A number of worthy organizations stand ready to put your aid to good use. This year, on the humanitarian front, there’s a special cause for divers to consider. Hurricane Dorian did a number on Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands. The devastation has dropped out of the news cycle, but their needs will be great well into the future. The Bahamian government maintains a webpage listing relief organizations at www.bahamas.com/relief. While donations are a major component of the relief effort, restoring jobs is also essential. If you want to boost your spirits along with the local economy, try a winter dive vacation to Grand Bahama. Its major dive operations are back up, and flights to Fort Lauderdale and other international airports should have resumed. Restoration of Abaco’s services will lag Grand Bahama’s, but the islands should offer
great adventures for the more self-reliant. Of the many marine-focused organizations, here are several that Florida divers might consider: Probably the best-known diver-oriented nonprofit is Reef Environmental Education Network, based in Key Largo. Check out R.E.E.F.’s website (www.reef.org) but plan on a lengthy visit. Their “quizlets” will hook you if you’re into fish-ID. Coral propagation is an important tool in restoring disease-damaged reefs. The Coral Restoration Foundation (www.coralrestoration.org) has focused primarily on growing elkhorn and staghorn corals to replace stands wiped out in the 1980s. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium (mote.org/research/program/coral-reef-restoration) is working with brain and boulder corals, with the goal of repairing reefs hit by the new disease outbreaks from Martin County down into the Florida Keys. rowing up, I used corks a lot, usually to know when a bream had taken my little dough ball when I was fishing in my backyard. Later, I used them to keep track of lively white bait or aid in casting shrimp farther. Now days, I use them more as a dinner bell than anything else. I am also using them in much deeper water than you would ever expect, but here you need a little patience.

If you’ve fished the flats in saltwater, you have probably used a popping cork and a shrimp at some point. Giving your rod a sharp tug to make the cork pop always seemed to liven up the action. Well, the same can be done in deep water to help hungry reds find your meal offering. The really cool thing about this is it works with conventional tackle as well as fly setups. The concept is pretty simple, a popping cork with about 20 inches of mono out of the bottom tied to large swimbait or fly. We use them around large schools of bait that are being worked over by breeding-sized reds. “Pop it hard and wait at least 10 seconds. You know it’s deep here and it will take at least that long for the fish to find it,” said Capt. Gary Dubiel. He should know since he invented the Pop N Fly technique. The key is to make a huge pop with a lot of noise and then pause. The deeper the water, the longer you wait. The fish are in constant movement around enormous schools of bait. When they hear what seems to be another fish feeding, they come running to get their share. But it might take a minute. You want to make sure your bait gets straight down below the cork, as well as giving the fish plenty of time to locate it before popping again. On average, wait 8 to 10 seconds in 14 feet of water, longer if the water is deeper. It is also nice that you don’t need live bait for this technique because it saves time at first light, making it easy to run and gun on large schools of bait. For tackle, a medium weight spinning rod with plenty of 20- or 30-pound braid will do the trick. On the fly, you will want a 10 weight to cast the rig and plenty of backing. Below the cork, your fly or swimbait will slowly sink down looking like a stunned or wounded baitfish that seemingly escaped a vicious attack… aka an easy meal. Pop and be patient, the strikes are basically unremarkable; the cork just disappears. But the fight of these 40-plus-pound beasts on light tackle or a fly rod is much more noteworthy. FWC has approved several draft rule changes for spotted seatrout. Based on public comment, the Commission also directed staff to continue considering public input and update the proposal as needed prior to bringing this back at a future meeting for final approval.
Approved draft changes include:
• Splitting the Northwest spotted seatrout management zone into two separate zones including the Western Panhandle (Escambia County through most of Gulf County, not including Indian Pass/Indian Lagoon) and the Big Bend (Franklin County, plus Indian Lagoon, through Fred Howard Park Causeway in Pinellas County). • Moving the boundary between the southern management zones to create the newly-renamed South Florida zone (Fred Howard Park Causeway in Pinellas County near the Pasco County line through Broward County) and Central East zone (Palm Beach through Volusia counties). • Reducing bag limits - Western Panhandle: five to three fish - Big Bend: five to four fish - South Florida: four to three fish - Central East: four to two fish - Northeast: six to five fish • Modifying the recreational slot size limit from 15-to-20 inches to 15-to-19 inches total length.
• Allowing one seatrout over 19 inches per vessel (currently, per harvester). • Changing the current daily commercial limits to 50 per harvester and 100 per vessel. • Prohibiting captain and crew from keeping a bag limit on a for-hire trip. • Re-establishing the February recreational closure in the Western Panhandle zone and the November-December recreational closure in the Central East zone. F
rog fishing is one of the most exciting ways to catch the largemouth bass that ambush feed in grass-choked reservoirs of the South. Lake Seminole, on the Florida/Georgia border, is one of the best frog-fishing lakes in the country. If you ever get the chance to visit Seminole, do it. In the meantime, these tips and techniques may help on your local grass mats. My favorite hollow-body frogs are the Spro Bronzeye series. Spro Bronzeye frogs are built
around a Gamakatsu EWG double hook that is very strong and sticky sharp, which is needed for getting big bass out of heavy cover. They come three styles: Bronzeye Frog, Bronzeye POP and Bronzeye Shad. Each has a unique action that works great under different circumstances. The Bronzeye Frog 65 has a pointed nose that can be worked over and through the heaviest cover or in open water. It’s the frog I choose for covering water to find concentrations of bass under grass mats. As the grass starts to die under mats, it creates open pockets and perfect frogging conditions. When fishing a Bronzeye Frog 65, heavy braided line is a must. My choice is Cortland Master Braid for its durability and strength. I also prefer a high speed reel, at least 7:3:1 gear ratio mounted on a 7-foot, 2-inch to 7-foot, 6-inch heavy action rod with a fast tip and a lot of backbone to haul big bass out of cover. Make long casts across a flat and work the frog with a fast hopping action. Expect a blowup! This is a great technique for covering large expanses to find out where fish are holding. When you get a strike, be sure to pause before setting the hook. Also, when a missed strike occurs, reel the bait in as fast as possible and cast back past where the strike occurred. Work the frog slowly with slight twitches to move it side to side but not forward. The bass should key in on the bait and strike again. The Bronzeye Pop 60 has incredible attention-drawing power. Its concave nose allows you to fish slower with a popping of the rod tip. The frog remains in the strike zone longer and generates explosive strikes. Fish this frog around all types of cover from laydowns to docks, to grass lines and holes in grass beds. I prefer a 7-foot to 7-foot, 3-inch heavy action rod with a fast tip and a high-speed reel with 50- to 65-pound braided line, depending on the cover I’m fishing. The Bronzeye Spit Shad 65 has a spitting and gliding action. It can be fished anywhere you would want to throw a hard bait but can’t due to hangups. I fish lily pad fields with this bait. It comes through pads very well and allows faster fishing to cover more water.
