Suzuki Unveils New V6 for Performance Boats S uzuki Marine previewed the new flagship of its SS (Sport Series) motors at the Bassmaster Classic in March. This new engine, the DF250SS V6 4-Stroke, is a high-performance outboard engineered to deliver extra kick for today’s performance-based boats. It is sized and designed for bass boats, bay boats and shallowwater applications. BIG FISH Kayak Catch & Release

ou’ve done it! Thousands of casts, dozens of early alarms, countless cups of coffee, and now there’s a monster fish on the hook, and from your kayak, no less! It’s a feat to be proud of. However, if you plan on releasing that fish, your attention should soon turn to proper handling techniques, which ensure safety for you and the fish. A sprinkle of chaos is expected when bringing a big fish into a small, plastic boat, but a few easy steps can ensure the fish goes home safely.

1. Keep Them Wet! Regardless of species, once you’ve netted or attached lip-grips to a fish, keep them in the water as much as possible. This is always true if you need to set up a camera, grab pliers or lay out a measuring board, and it’s especially important in summer months, when release mortality increases due to warmer water. I prefer to use lip grips on bigger catches, since it mitigates the need to untangle a large, fired up fish from a net. Storing commonly used tools nearby is also key, particularly in a kayak where space is limited. Once you’re set up, it’s time for a photo or a measurement!

2. Holding Techniques If there’s one thing anglers universally love, it’s the “hero shot.” You know, the one where you and maybe your buddy grin widely while posing with a monster catch. I’m a big fan of hero shots, and of taking them properly. Handling the fish safely is key here, and that means keeping hands away from their gills, holding them horizontally and supporting their belly. Never weigh big fish vertically on a scale. This point is often debated in angling circles, and I respect both schools of thought, but I go with horizontal holds because I think the photos come out better. With length and girth measurements, you can figure out a rough weight, anyway. Now, smile big and grab that picture… and no straight-arming!

3. Respect and Revive Properly reviving big catches is important. It ensures continuity of strong genetics, allows a future angler a chance at the same fish, and it simply feels good knowing you’ve encountered an incredible animal and returned it home safely. Face the fish into current, open its mouth, and if possible, pedal or paddle your kayak to get water flowing over their gills. Revival can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. A fish is ready to go when it raises its dorsal spines and lightly clamps onto your hand, or straight up kicks off and swims away like a rocket. If you don’t already emphasize this process, I encourage you to not only take revival time, but to enjoy it! Thank the fish, watch them swim off and get casting again! Everyone should have a process for catch-and-release fishing. Above all, if you plan on releasing a fish, show it respect and reverence for the experience it has given you. t wasn’t that long ago when we all thought the only way to get hogfish was to take a plunge with a spear gun. Now-a-days, it’s considered one of the most action-packed trips you can take, albeit a lot of the action is weeding through the plethora of other fish that come to the party.

Despite decades of thinking hook-and-line hogfishing was impossible, they are actually easy to catch. Tackle requirements are very modest; medium spinning tackle is plenty stout. Rigging is simple, too, a knocker rig with a 2-ounce egg sinker and a #4 circle hook is all you need. No swivel is needed to separate the sinker and hook, as you want your bait right on the bottom. Let the sinker slide all the way to the hook. Hog Balls can be deadly as well, but remember when using natural bait a circle hook is a must (it’s the law). Other than that, you’ll need plenty of shrimp, 4 to 5 dozen per person. Hogfish tend to hang out in areas with plenty of grunts, triggerfish and small grouper, which all seem to be much quicker to eat than hogfish. You’ll need to weed through their friends to get to your hogfish dinner. The good news is, all the other fish lead to an action-packed adventure perfect for kids and impatient anglers, alike. Many people use whole shrimp, but I’ve found half shrimp are equally effective and help the bait go further. Finding hogfish is not that difficult either. They like good hard bottom, especially areas with sea fans and nice ledges. You’ll need to start in at least 35 feet, and I’ve had great trips all the way out to 100 feet and deeper. If you don’t already have a few spots in your arsenal, mapping software like Garmin’s Navionics Vision+ can help you find good places to start. You can even use it on a tablet to scout spots from your couch before you go. Once you are there, if the action isn’t almost immediate, move to the next spot. These fish tend to hang out around hungry schools of buddies. The fun really starts once hogfish join the party. They are hard fighters and unlike the others that tend to just pull straight down, hogs will run side to side and are a blast on light tackle. Best of all, hogfish make great table fare and taste similar to snapper, which they are often misclassified as. They are actually a species of wrasse. It is important to be careful handling undersized fish. Hogfish are hermaphrodites. All of them are females until they reach a certain size and maturity when some become males. Since smaller fish are crucial to reproduction, they should be handled gingerly to give them the best chance at survival. College Scouts Witness Stellar High School Fishing on “The Big O”

his spring marked the launch of a much-anticipated partnership between NSR Fishing and Florida BASS Nation at the South Trail and Spring Trail events at Lake Okeechobee. The mission for NSR (National Scouting Report) is simple. NSR Fishing is building a database of qualified high school anglers for use by college coaches across the country. Florida produces some of the best talent in tournament bass fishing, and NSR scouts were excited to get out on the “Big O” to identify young anglers showcasing their skills and knowledge of the lake. National Scouting Report CEO Rusty Rigney was honored to be the keynote speaker for the Florida BASS Nation pre-tournament meeting. Now, they are here to see what you Florida anglers are all about.” Rigney detailed the full NSR program with the anglers and their families. He told them: “We are looking for the best anglers in the state of Florida. It’s not just about wins and finishes, it’s about becoming the complete angler that can bring real value to a collegiate program.” Saturday, Feb. 12 set up perfect with bluebird skies and more than 170 South Trail anglers hitting the water. NSR scouts were out filming and evaluating many teams in the points race for the year, but there was also a lot of buzz about a few teams that had large bags of fish. At weigh-ins, Connor Swindle and Max Lofton of the Hendry County HS Bassmasters placed third with 20.15 pounds. Michael John Teate jr. and Evan Newell of Mid Florida Youth Anglers finished second with 21.88 pounds.

bl Drew Pitts and Luke Romesburg of the Tampa Bay Jr Bass Club stole the show and took home first place with a giant five-bass limit of 32.18 pounds. Sunday welcomed another 170-plus boats for the Spring Trail tournament. NSR scouts were anxious to get on the water to see how young anglers would adjust to higher winds and rain that were moving in early Sunday. Many predicted lower weights. However, six high school anglers from the Okeechobee Brahmans team proved everyone wrong, taking the top three spots. Joshua King and Hunter Daniels brought in the heaviest sack of the day with 30.35 pounds. Behind them were Lane Davis and Korbyn Lewes with 24.81 pounds. Third place went to Rafe Sexton and Hillary Martin with 23.16 pounds. With two 30-plus-pound bags of fish and many over 20, several Florida high school anglers made a case to be considered NSR 5 Star Anglers. NSR Fishing’s search for the best anglers in the country continues over the next couple months with scouts heading to legendary fisheries like Lake Guntersville, Lake Seminole and Lake Palestine, where more of the best anglers in the country will show off their skills.

April Surf Fishing on the Treasure Coast

pril is windy and will be the last good month of fishing for many of the winter fish like pompano, mackerel and bluefish, before they move north. Some of these fish, especially bluefish, will remain but in relatively small numbers. Pompano can be caught all month on the beach with orange fish bites and sand fleas. In the Indian River Lagoon, try jigging from the bridges with pompano jigs (chartreuse or hot pink) on moving tides. I’ve also caught random pompano in the lagoon on ¼-ounce jigs with a 4-inch tail (white). Permit have also been caught on the beach on small crabs, fish bites or large sand fleas. Both permit and pompano are usually 50 to 70 yards offshore. The mackerel bite is still good on the beach early in the morning and when bait is present. The early morning bite is in the trough around the close breakers. Small spoons (1-ounce silver crocodile or gold Johnson spoons) with treble hooks seem to work best, but the fish will hit any lure retrieved quickly near the surface. The mackerel are still in the Peck’s Lake area, where you need to fish from a boat. The bluefish bite has been sporadic with fish chasing bait. The bluefish bite has been best in early morning or when bait is present. Some large snook are being caught in deeper water of the St. Lucie River both North and South forks, at the Crossroads and around deep piers and bridges. Large Tomahawk jigs and live or cut bait fished early in the morning, at dusk or at night work the best. There are still some snook on the beach, but rarely. April is a month you can harvest one snook between the 28”- 32” slot. Trout are scattered in the lagoon and can be caught on jigs and topwater lures like a Skitterwalk or Zara Spook on warm afternoons. The best trout areas are north from the power plant to the Vero Beach flats. The flounder bite is still good on small jigs and live bait on the flats and around the bridges. Some redfish have been caught on jigs tipped with live shrimp from the power plant north. It’s best to target mangroves on high tide in the afternoon. As usual, there are scattered schools of ladyfish and jacks cruising the beaches. Some nice jacks in the 5- to10-pound range have been taken on jigs and shallow-running crankbaits. The ladyfish and jack bite has been good when bait is present. Remember, see the birds, find the bait, catch the fish! This year’s tournament coincided with the Pelican Yacht Club Billfish Invitational Tournament, giving sport fisherman another opportunity to fish while also supporting ‘The Lenny.” There was increased participation this year, with boats from across the southeast participating in the billfish division and many new entrees in the meat fish division. Awards and cash prizes were provided for both sailfish and meat fish divisions. Anglers fishing in the meat fish division were judged according to aggregate weight of a combination of dolphin, tuna, wahoo, cobia, king mackerel and grouper. This year the top billfishing boat, Cowpoke, captained by Mike Brady won with nine released sailfish. Second place was claimed by Lo Que Sea, captained by Garrett Yarborough, with eight sailfish releases. Waterman was also a big

nce again, sportsmen and anglers faced challenging sea conditions and heavy winds to support “The Lenny,” the annual sportfishing tournament with the sole mission to fund research for a Glioblastoma brain cancer cure. t its March meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a limited, highly regulated recreational harvest of goliath grouper in state waters beginning Spring 2023. This unique recreational opportunity is possible through conservation efforts by state and federal agencies that aided in the goliath grouper population rebuilding over the course of three decades, following years of overfishing. This limited harvest will allow access to a fishery that has been closed since 1990 by issuing up to 200 harvest permit tags via random-draw lottery. This approved recreational harvest of goliath grouper includes: • A recreational harvest of up to 200 goliath per year, with a maximum of 50 from Everglades National Park. • A required recreational goliath harvest permit and tag, issued via a random-draw lottery, to legally harvest a goliath ($150 for residents, $500 for non-residents). • Limiting harvest to one fish per person per open season with permit and tag, non-transferable. • A March 1 through May 31 season. • Allowable gear will be hook-and-line only. • A slot limit of 24 to 36 inches total length. • Harvest would be permitted in all state waters except those of Martin County south through the Atlantic coast of the Keys, all of the St. Lucie River and its tributaries, and Dry Tortugas National Park. • Post-harvest requirements, such as proper utilization of the harvest tag, reporting harvest data and submitting a fin clip for genetic analysis. Harvest will continue to be prohibited in federal waters. “After decades of closure to this fishery, we welcome this opportunity for a highly regulated, limited take of goliath grouper,” said FWC Commissioner Robert Spottswood. “In addition, the post-harvest data reporting will help guide future management decisions for this species.” FWC staff have gathered stakeholder comments on this topic since 2017 from its commenting webpage, various Commission meetings and

he April rays of the Florida sun will illuminate a near coastal ocean that will play host to some of the most prized saltwater grocery trophies in the world. Cobia, snapper, mahi, and king mackerel will top this briny hit list and will be found around and atop the renowned reef system, east of our St. Lucie Inlet. The offshore fish hunters of April will delight in engaging in strategies that involve both surface and bottom fishing during open, user-friendly, weather windows this month. April can still be a windy month that produces rough sea conditions, so anglers (as always) will need to continue to monitor daily offshore forecasts. Cobia typically make a strong showing during the golden days of

April and will be found in many dynamic scenarios of the local, liquid playing field. Hungry packs of cobia will be attracted to all types of reef structures, both naturally occurring and artificial, and will fall to live and dead baits presented throughout the water column. Live baits are especially effective and will prove to be irresistible to a cobe in the right mood. Fishing live whitebaits is your ticket to success in any conditions. Fishing structure such as docks, seawalls, submerged rock piles, and mangrove shorelines will provide plenty of bites. Typically, you will use a 40-to-60-pound braid with a 40-to-60-pound fluorocarbon leader with 5/0 circle hooks to increase your catch ratio. Also don’t be surprised if you find yourself hooked up to a random trout and or redfish in the mix while targeting snook and jacks around river structure. Rapala topwater plugs work wonders at first light around seawalls and along mangrove shorelines until about 9 a.m. As the day progresses switch to sub

Rigging consists of 5000-to-8000 size spinning outfits with 40-to-80pound braid with 40-to-80-pound leader. Live whitebaits will work great rigged on a 5/0 circle hook for cobia, jack, and tarpon. Crabs on a smaller 2/0-4/0 2x Eagle Claw circle hook will work wonders for permit. Add a pinch weight if they are suspended in the water column. Kingfish, barracuda, and sharks will require wire leaders with heavy spinning/conventional outfits. Again, larger 2x 5/0-9/0 circle hooks with wire leaders and larger live or dead baits will get the bites. Live blue runners are plentiful and make

he winds of March are behind us and the calmer sunny days of April are upon us. There are many things to look forward to about April fishing. However, my favorite is the run of mahi-mahi that we are about to see come through the east coast of Florida. In April we will see a large influx of larger mahi-mahi out of the Fort Pierce Inlet. We will see the normal 20-to-25-inch fish but, there will be many more 10-to-20-pound fish to be caught along with the possibility of catching a giant mahimahi of over 40 pounds. The key to catching these fish is to spend more time fishing and less time running at high speeds going from spot to spot. It is very common for anglers

to “run over” the fish trying to get to deeper water. I always start fishing in 100 foot of water and do not go out deeper than 300 feet of water during this mahi-mahi run. These depth ranges will have the most attractive water temperatures for the bait and mahi-mahi to follow as well as the highest probability of currents pulling weed lines together. I like to troll ballyhoo at five- to six-milesper-hour with green and orange skirts. I also like a pink and white skirt as well. If running a longline, a black and purple skirt will get the bites as well. If you do not want to troll ballyhoo, you can also troll lures such as a Chugger or a Rapala diving crankbait (25 feet) to yield results. Other fish that will be around are wahoo and kingfish along with the mahi-mahi, it will not be uncommon to catch a couple of these as bycatch. As always on the bottom there will be some mangrove and mutton snapper to be caught on the 80-foot reef. We are approaching the spawn for these snapper, so the fishing will continue to improve for them. There will also be some more cobia showing up on the reef so keep those flat lines

with a live greenie or pilchard ready. The yellowtail and lane snapper will also be some common species in April to find out on the reef. If you are looking to deep water bottom fish, the amberjack should be plentiful in 120 to 200 feet of water. I would recommend a live blue runner

around artificial sunken ships to get the best results. Last but not least, nearshore there will be kingfish and cobia to be caught in 40 to 60 feet of water. Slow trolling live bait around artificial reefs will prove to be the most productive.

pring has arrived on the Treasure Coast. Typically, in April the winds start to subside slightly where we start having more days to pop out the inlet and change the scenery. Overall, the winter was fairly mild, and we have had quite a bit of good fishing opportunities. On the calmer days this month, I’ll find myself out on the beach looking for the large schools of jacks. The schools can range from 10 fish to 200-plus and can range from 10- to 30-pounds plus. They can be found roaming in anywhere from 15-to-40 foot of water. These are some of our most underrated hardest fighting fish in our region. I often say if they jumped, they would be more sought after than tarpon. Use heavier gear than you think you need. We use 5500 size reels with medium heavy action 7-foot rods. You want to enjoy the fight but also need to be able to land the fish quick if a shark shows up. A large casting spoon is a good lure to use for the larger jacks. I like the Kastmaster brand spoons in the 1.5- or 2-ounce

size. They cast 10-to-20 percent farther than any other brand I have experience with. Removing the treble hook and replacing it with a large inline single will speed up the releasing process. You can cover quite a bit of water when running the beach. Don’t go out there with tunnel vision. Many other opportunities can arise while you’re just off the edge of the nearshore reefs. Cobia, permit, tarpon, and kingfish are all likely species to stumble across while looking for the jacks. Having

When the weather is calm, a boat ride down the beach can really pay off, keep your eyes open and have some stout spinning tackle on board for double-digit jacks, the occasional cobia and an early school of migrating tarpon. The only thing being done is your tax dollars being spent for a grant to do research to determine the species of the sharks. I offered pictures and video but that wasn’t scientific enough. Spoiler alert there 70% bull sharks, 20% sand bars and the rest are not a problem. Make some noise guys!

Spring is in full swing. Glass minnows will be the bait to match the hatch this month. Artificial baits like D.O.A. C.A.L. Shad Tails, jerk bait and TerrorEyz will work well around the mangroves, docks and bridges. Try fishing dock lights and bridges around Lake Boca at night for some snook action. Make sure to wear a head lamp and have a 360-degree light on your kayak. Pompano are still around in our northern areas like the Jupiter and St. Lucie inlets. Goofy jigs, D.O.A. Shrimp and sand fleas are great options to work around the channel edges.

armer weather has led up to great fishing on Lake Okeechobee, as stable weather patterns usher in some of the better catching of the year. Bass anglers are finding that catching large numbers of bass to be tougher this year than it has been in quite some time. The artificially high water levels maintained by the Corps of Engineers is allowing the bass to access the deepest part of the marsh areas where anglers can no longer penetrate due to extreme weed growth. The bite can be a hit or miss affair, one day the fish will be stacked up in an area and eating a spinnerbait or chatter bait and the next day the area will seem devoid of fish. The tried-and-true Senko in a black and blue color or a watermelon/red color will always produce fish, it is just a little slower presentation than most people can stand. Working through an area thoroughly before moving on is much more productive to run and gun-style fishing on Okeechobee. Guided shiner trips are producing 25 to 40 fish per morning with big bass in the mix almost daily. Look for the best bass fishing for numbers and big bass around three to four days prior to and after a full or new moon phase. Many anglers visit Okeechobee each year around this time to target the hard fighting and very tasty panfish she produces. Shellcrackers are primarily caught near or on the bottom, although the water they are in may only be two feet deep. The canal edges and the shallow water marsh areas are key spots to find large areas of spawning beds, which appear as light spots on the normally dark bottom. We have found beds over the years which were very small, and other years we have found beds that were 30 to 40 feet wide. The primary bait for shellcrackers is either a red worm or a grass shrimp fished very near the bottom. Bluegills can be coaxed to rise up and strike a popping bug or small floating fly, but most are caught on grass shrimp, crickets, or

red worms under a small bobber. It is that time of year that many are out fishing for speck (crappie) out on Lake Okeechobee with great success. It has been quite a few years since so many large specks have been found in the grassy areas that form the littoral zone of the lake. Kissimmee grass is found surrounding the outside edges of the lake on the north end of the lake and is a prime spot to target and find large, speckled perch when they move in shallow water to spawn. When Kissimmee grass and other native grasses can be found adjacent to one another fishing can go to catching very quickly. Anglers targeting the fish are using small jigs on a very thin line. The weather is perfect, and the fishing is top notch for fishing out on Lake O this time of year!

Hunters should know lobster season closed April 1 and since grouper and hogfish seasons continue to be closed through the end of the month now is a great time for some recon dives to be ready for May 1. When the water hits 80 degrees, many local divers in south Florida consider this the start of ‘dive season’ and with such a mild winter this year, it is entirely possible this will happen this month. Early in March, divers were already reporting temps in the mid-to-upper 70s! It is worth noting that even if air temps may

be summer-like, the ocean does lag behind a bit and this can be quite refreshing on a hot day. This time of year, mated pairs of loggerheads are frequently seen on the surface and once begun, mating can last for several hours. This leaves them

vulnerable to passing boat traffic. Care should be taken to avoid disturbing breeding activities. All Florida sea turtles are protected by the endangered species act making it against the law to harass or otherwise interfere with their normal behavior. Many consider it a violation to impede their direction of travel underwater. Although grouper and hogfish are still closed until May 1, many divers are reporting them both

in big numbers around natural and artificial structure in March. Scouting missions ahead of opening season are a great way to determine which spots may be productive come May 1. Consider bringing a single tank on fishing trips to make a quick bounce dive on a select spot or two to see how it looks on the bottom. This is a great way to cool down during the heat of the day and will help dial in where to get the big ones when the season open.

hat a great experience and what a good time! We just wrapped up three Saltwater Flyfishing Bootcamps here in beautiful Stuart, Fla. Our attendees came from all over the US and were very excited to get a winter break even though our weather was very windy and kind of cold. Each bootcamp started with a four-hour theory session where we talked about all and everything from the right equipment, how to choose the right location and fly fishing tactics and techniques. The following three days were very intense with tons of fly casting (serving all levels). Hands-on flyfishing tactics and techniques

training from flats, inshore to near shore. Casting made up a big portion of everyday practice and it was amazing to see how all of my students improved and became better casters. They learned single and double hauling and got their rod handling and fly line management dialed in. Strip setting, and how to apply pressure on the fish while fighting it was another piece of the puzzle that everyone practiced and learned quick. We spent every day on and in the water so that each student could adapt to the different conditions. Hands on training while fly fishing was the most important part (other

FWC Commission Approves Rules to Allow Production, Sale of Largemouth Bass

t their March meeting, Commissioners with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved rules to allow for the production and sale of Florida largemouth bass as a food product. Statutory changes made during the 2021 legislative session sanctioned the sale of Florida largemouth bass produced in aquaculture facilities for food. Staff worked with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) to ensure continued genetic conservation of Florida’s iconic freshwater game fish. Key points from the approved rule language include: • Allow for the culture and sale of Florida largemouth bass as a food fish. • Incorporate FWC’s Genetic Authentication Standards for Florida largemouth bass into rule by reference. • Prohibit the importation into or transportation within the state of any live bass species, except permitted Florida largemouth bass that meet FWC’s largemouth bass Genetic Authentication Standards. • Require any shipment of live bass in Florida

Prior to presentation of the draft rules at the December Commission meeting, FWC staff held four public meetings and solicited online comments from stakeholders. Bad Seagrass Bill Fails W

e are happy to report that House Bill 349, a seagrass mitigation bill filed by Rep. Toby Overdorf, with a Senate companion (SB 198) sponsored by Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez, has died in session. As we reported in our March CAM column, it allowed developers to pitch some money into a mitigation bank to make up for any and all destruction of Indian River Lagoon seagrass they might cause in shoreline or below waterline projects. The Lagoon has lost in the

neighborhood of 60 to 90 percent of native grasses due to poor water quality primarily. The maddening part of these dead bills is that mitigation bank monies could be used for seagrass restoration anywhere in the state, not necessarily where the initial damage happens. Secondly, seagrass restoration is in its relative infancy, and success rates are low, and real success on a large scale will depend on substantial water quality improvements, which was not addressed in the bills. Interestingly, the sponsors

of the bills are now advocating for changing Florida’s seagrass restoration permitting process, one that takes nearly a year by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). According to a video email released in early March by Rep. Toby Overdorf, the hope is to expedite the process to allow seagrass growers to plant in specified locations in more timely manner, as soon as grasses are available. “Through administrative process rather than a bill, it appears we can get DEP to issue permits quickly, when growers have the materials (such as the woven grass mats that Florida Oceanographic makes) and ideally, in the prime growth months from April through September,” said Florida Oceanographic (FOS) Executive Director Mark Perry. Perry stresses the need for the right site, the right time of year, and ultimately, the best water quality possible to allow mostly manatee grass and shoal grass to get a foothold and survive. FOS still monitors a successful planting site, just north of the Jensen Causeway on the west shore of the Indian River Lagoon. Woven manatee grass mats with a mix of

Lake O Watch After a drier-than-normal dry season, Treasure Coast anglers on the southern Indian River Lagoon have enjoyed fairly good water clarity. However, this clarity makes plain just how much seagrass we have lost, as well as the forage species such as pin fish, and gamefish, such as spotted seatrout, that depend on grassy habitat. Much of the sand flats inside the St. Lucie Inlet look like the Bahama Bank, and macroalgaes, Caulerpa algae and Lyngbya, a cyanobacteria, are predominant. And now, the wet season lies just ahead, with June 1 the official start. It is with trepidation that we watch Lake Okeechobee’s elevation (water height above sea level) to predict if and when the Army Corps decides to start Lake discharges to the coastal estuaries. Keep in mind that the Lake Okeechobee Systems Operating Manual (LOSOM) that promises a 37 percent reduction

in Lake water to the estuaries does not kick in until 2023. The Herbert Hoover Dike strengthening project will be completed by late 2023. But this year, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. At this writing (March 8) the Lake stood at 14.32 elevation, around 3/4 of a foot lower than this date in 2021. It’s an improvement, but Treasure Coast residents would like to see the Lake down to 12.50 for “breathing room” especially in light of the prediction by forecasters that the Florida peninsula will see more hurricane strikes than in 2021, when Louisiana took the brunt. Since November 2021, the St. Lucie River and lower Indian River Lagoon has enjoyed normal salinity readings,

2nd Annual Sand Spike Shootout a Great Success

ndian Riverkeeper would like to thank all donors and attendees for making the second annual Sand Spike Shootout a success in lateFebruary. Approximately 100 paid anglers battled some conditions— slime weed and sharks in the surf— but plenty of pompano and whiting were brought to the scales both days. Ten major prizes were won by the top five pompano and top five whiting (by weight) anglers. Prizes were donated by Snook Nook Bait & Tackle, Penn Tackle, Engel Coolers, Akios Reels, Ninja Tackle, Pompano Rich Vidulich, and Bajio Sunglasses. Anglers tackle packs were provided by Tony Faggioni of Fishgum, Pompano Rich Vidulich and Tim Goodwin of T&A jigs. p to press time, weather continued to delay the deployments of the Captain Patrick Price Memorial Reef and the Daymaker Charters Reef. After Willis Custom Yachts placed both the Last One and the Spirit of Palm Beach into the water, sea conditions had been too rough to sink these vessels safely. In the meantime, David Powell, VicePresident of MCAC Artificial Reef Fund, has been busy securing and cleaning a 142-foot motor vessel to be deployed this summer by the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program. While waiting for the weather to improve, the Program has been awaiting monitoring reports from its consultants, Coastal Systems International and Ecological Associates (EA). EA has developed a Remotely Operated Vessel/360o drop camera methodology that, once perfected, will allow St. Lucie County to compare data over many years. It will also allow fish to be monitored that are often averse to the presence of divers. Initial trials on the CCA Curtis Bostick Reef

using this methodology revealed 10 species of fish in 5 families, including large numbers of blue runner (Caranx crysos), tomtates (Haemulon elegans), French grunts (Haemulon flavolineatum), and gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus), plus lesser numbers of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and other species. This methodology also detected 22 species in 12 families on one reef on the Stan Blum Memorial Site including gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus), ocean triggerfish (Canthidermis sufflamen), sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus), black sea bass (Centropristis striata) and a single juvenile gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis). The gag grouper was the latest in a growing group of juvenile fishes on St. Lucie County’s artificial reefs. Other fish species include black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci), black seabass (Centropristis striata), gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus), scamp (Mycteroperca phenax), snowy grouper (Hyporthodus niveatus), and yellowtail snapper (Onchorynchus chrysurus). These juvenile

fishes show that the County’s artificial reefs are providing habitat for juvenile fishes to grow to maturity, replacing the fishes that have been harvested The Artificial Reef Program also continues to work on water quality entering the Indian River Lagoon. Tributaries to the lagoon impact fish habitat in this water body by delivering nutrients, sediments, metals and other pollutants to this important nursery. Early in March a diverse group of volunteers helped remove bottles, cans and other debris from Moore’s Creek, an urban tributary that runs through downtown Fort Pierce. These volunteers were aided by governmental organizations to clean the creek. The City of Fort Pierce lowered the water level in the creek, enabling volunteers to remove trash stuck in muck sediments on the creek bed and also helped to remove debris from the creek once it had

Youth Encouraged to Apply for CCA Florida Youth Scholarship Program

he CCA Florida Youth Scholarship Program is an opportunity for Florida High School Students to earn college scholarships. Students will compete throughout the week, and scholarships will be awarded based on merit, attention, focus, creativity, speeches and more. Students will travel to Orlando, Fla. for a five-day experience unlike any other. Students will tour the CCA office, meet industry professionals, participate in habitat projects, visit with special guests and so much more! Hotels, meals and transportation during the program are included. Parents/ students are responsible for transportation to and from Orlando. After the conclusion of the program, all participants are encouraged to start/engage in CCA Florida programs in their own communities. They have 10 months to creatively participate in enhancing and protecting Florida’s marine resources. TRAILER INSPECTION TIPS FOR THE SPRING BOATING SEASON

he weather has finally given in, spring is almost here, with summer right around the corner, and we will be spending more time “on the road” to get to the water. Before doing so, make sure to check out your boat trailer and make sure you are up-to-date with the requirements and safety issues. • BRAKES. If you have a doubleaxle, or tandem as it’s called, the law says you must have working brakes on all wheels. If you’re bound for the Keys or plan to drive a distance,

make absolutely sure all brakes are working properly. • LIGHTS. Be sure your lights are working. Brake lights are especially important, along with directional lights. You don’t want to stop at a light and have someone run into the back of your boat. • TIRES. Check for uneven wear and heat cracks. Insuring proper tire pressure is an easy way to help keep heat cracking from happening. Most standard tires in the 14-inch and 15inch sizes should be kept at 52 psi.

• BEARINGS. If you notice uneven tread wear on the inside or the outside, you may want to have your bearings checked. • BUNK CARPET. Check to see if it is in good condition and stapled securely. If it is worn or torn, replace it. • WINCH STRAP. Be sure your winch strap is in good condition. You don’t want it breaking while your loading the boat back on the trailer. Take a little time and look your

trailer over carefully from front to back and side to side. If you see anything questionable, have an experienced technician check it for you. Report Horseshoe Crab Sightings to FWC for Science

pring has sprung and that means it’s peak mating season for horseshoe crabs. Help biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gather valuable information about these ancient creatures by reporting sightings on the online survey at https:// bit.ly/3KG7WRJ. Horseshoe crabs mate by pairing up, with the smaller male attached to the larger female. They then crawl onto the beach up to the high tide line where the female digs a nest and lays her eggs, all while the male is attached and fertilizing the freshly laid eggs. They mate year-round, but it is most common to see mating groups along the shore of sandy, lower wave action beaches in March and April as well as September and October. Beachgoers will have the most luck spotting horseshoe crabs around high tide within a few days of a new or full moon. Reporting horseshoe crab sightings provides valuable information about habitat use, population distribution and environmental conditions for nesting to the FWC. FWC Encourages Boaters to “Spring Aboard” and Take a Boater Education Class S pring has arrived and that means many residents and visitors will be flocking to Florida’s beautiful beaches and waterways. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants boaters to “Spring Aboard” and get educated prior to the kickoff of the boating season to make the most of their time on the water. Spring is the perfect time to take a boating safety course before the summer boating season begins. In 2021, Florida boating accident statistics indicated that 83% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction. Education is the key to having a safe and enjoyable day on the water. While not currently required, owners of human-powered watercraft, such as paddleboards and kayaks, are encouraged to take a boating education class as well so they are aware of critical boating

knowledge that anyone who plans to get out on the water should have and be better prepared for the risks they might face while boating. “In Florida, boaters who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, are required to complete and pass a boater safety education course. But everyone interested in boating should take a course,” said Maj. Rob Beaton, FWC’s Boating and Waterways Section Leader. “Taking a boating education course is one of the best things you can do to prevent accidents on the water.” Boaters have many ways to get educated, from classroom courses offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadrons to online offerings available any time day or night. 4 (6-ounce) Florida red snapper fillets, skin on 1 large Florida avocado, peeled and sliced thin ⅓ cup Florida orange juice 2 Florida Key limes, juiced 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1 lime, juiced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon all-purpose seasoning (your favorite) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

PREPARATION: Peel and slice avocado. Place on heat safe surface and char with kitchen torch or by placing under broiler for several minutes. Squeeze fresh lime juice over avocado to prevent browning. Preheat large sauté pan over medium-high heat and add oil. Score skin side of fillets with sharp knife to create hash marks. Season fish on both sides with salt and pepper and lightly coat in cornstarch, dust off excess. Gently place in pan, skin side down, for 3-4 minutes. Flip and continue to sear until completely cooked through, about 2-3 more minutes. Remove from pan and set aside. In the same pan, add butter, lemon juice, and lime juice. Bring to boil and reduce by half to create a sauce. To plate dish, spoon sauce on each plate; arrange charred avocado over sauce and add snapper over the avocado.

ESA Listing Anniversary for Smalltooth Sawfish T

he population of smalltooth sawfish in the United States experienced a significant decrease in numbers and distribution during the 20th century due to overfishing, habitat loss, and limited reproduction. Given the decline, NOAA Fisheries listed the U.S. population of smalltooth sawfish as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act nineteen years ago on April 1, 2003. The smalltooth sawfish became the first fully marine fish and first elasmobranch (sharks, skates, and rays) protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The goal of the Endangered Species Act listing is to recover the population to the point that it no longer needs the protections afforded by the Act. A recovery plan for smalltooth sawfish in the U.S. was published in 2009 and recommends specific steps to recover the population, focusing on (1) educating the public to minimize human interactions with sawfish and any associated injury and mortality, (2) protecting and/or restoring important sawfish habitats, and (3)

ensuring sawfish abundance and distribution increase. For smalltooth sawfish recovery means ensuring the long-term viability of the species in the wild through substantial increases in both abundance and range. At the time of the listing in 2003 scientists knew little about the biology, ecology, and population dynamics of smalltooth sawfish. The recovery plan identified actions and research goals aimed at gaining a better understanding of the species and the population. Over the last 19 years, scientists from multiple agencies, universities, and organizations have collaborated to research the smalltooth sawfish population in the United States. We now know more about their size and age at maturity, the number of young they give birth to, the food they eat, their large- and small-scale movement patterns and habitat use, and their response to a variety of stressors. This research greatly improved our understanding of the species and helped us prioritize the actions needed to reach recovery as

quickly as possible. One of the best ways to monitor the population and track recovery progress is analyzing public sawfish encounters. Captained by Kevin Paul, Waterman released seven sailfish in the men’s division, with four caught by lady anglers in the women’s competition. Second place in the Women’s Division was Valentine. Ellen Gross fishing on Valentine, hooked all of her own fish, taking the top Lady Angler title. The smaller boats competing in the meat fish division braved the weather and all had good catches overall. Southern Eagle, captained by Chase Cornell, won top prize in the meat fish division with 52 points overall. Despite the weather, some nice tuna and mahi were caught. “We’re hoping for better weather and improved fishing for meat fish next year,” said Lenny Schelin, Sr. Sutton Paul continues to dominate the young anglers division this year, winning the Junior Angler title with top points on sailfish. He took home another sailfish trophy necklace, donated by Michael’s Jeweler’s in Fort Pierce. Cobb’s Landing, Little Jim Bait & Tackle, and local purveyors provided live music and amazing

the awards banquet. Down home southern barbecue with all the ‘fixin’s’ was prepared and donated by grillmaster Scott Holmes. This year many businesses generously provided donations for the tournament events, including the live auction. Donna Qvarstrom and her able staff, including Katie Hogan, coordinated it all expertly. The Lenny Schelin, Jr. Memorial Tournament is a non-profit 501(c)3. Organizers are already planning for next year’s event. “It’s so gratifying and heartwarming to see the support that local businesses and anglers provide year after year to this event”, says Debbie Johnson, mother of Lenny Schelin, Jr. “It is just awesome that Lenny is so honored and remembered by friends and watermen at this event. We know it is helping bring us one step closer to a cure, year by year.” Lenny Schelin, Jr. was a wellknown and beloved mate and captain who lost his struggle with devastating terminal brain cancer in 2018 at the age of 33. The Living Docks and Oyster Gardening Project at Florida Oceanographic is a collaboration with Florida Tech. FOS is looking for homeowners and local residents with personal or private docks to help improve water quality in the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon. A Living Dock consists of 6 - 10 mats made from aquaculture grade mesh, with 60 - 80 dried oyster shells, which are then attached to dock pilings. The chemical composition

in the shells attracts oysters, as well as other bivalves through chemical cues, and acts as natural habitat for filter-feeding organisms to settle on. In return, these communities will attract larger organisms such as fish, dolphins, and turtles, creating a diverse ecosystem. Oyster gardening is another restoration tool to improve water quality and enhance oyster reefs by protecting young oysters from predators and competition. A portion of the Living Docks will be paired with oyster gardening to see how overall water quality is impacted by the presence of both. Spat (baby oysters) will be grown off of docks for about nine months before being returned to our locally restored reefs as stable adults. Mahi-Mahi Cuts Explained I

f you’re an offshore angler in Florida, you likely already know the state is cutting in half the recreational limits for dolphin in Atlantic state waters. The changes, effective May 1, slash the recreational daily bag limit from 10 to 5 fish per person and the vessel limit from 60 to 30 fish per vessel. The simple reason given in FWC’s press releases is that anglers in the Keys and the state’s analyses have both witnessed fewer and smaller dolphin in recent years. FWC’s presentation from the most recent commission meeting tells a

deeper story. First off, mahi are extremely important to recreational fisheries off south Florida and the Keys, and Florida recreational landings have fallen dramatically, according to FWC data. In the 1990s, the recreational fishery experienced several peaks between 20 and 30 million pounds per year. Since 2010, the highest year for landings came in at about 15 million pounds in 2015. Between 2016 and 2020, that number never topped 10 million pounds, and in 2020 it slipped below 5 million. Those are pretty scary numbers with an abrupt downward swing for a species that is short-lived, fast growing and should repopulate quickly. The kicker is, no one really knows the status of Atlantic dolphin stocks because they are highly migratory and distributed from New England to the Caribbean coast of South America. International harvest is an unknown factor. Dolphin are very sensitive to water temperatures, and warming oceans are offered as a potential explanation for Florida anglers seeing fewer dolphin. Meanwhile, recreational dolphin trips and anecdotal reports of success are increasing off the Mid-Atlantic and New England. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, which manages federal waters of the Atlantic off the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, reduced the recreational dolphin limit from 60 to 54 fish per vessel in June 2021. Florida advocated strongly for deeper cuts as a precaution; however, North Carolina is apparently reveling in its improving mahi fishery and would only agree to the 54 fish per vessel reduction. Part of Florida’s push is proactive management for the fishery, which would include increased international engagement to get a better idea of what is actually going on. This year’s dramatic cut in recreational limits for state waters might, however, be little more than a gesture. Over the last decade, about 90 percent of the recreational catch off Florida has come from federal waters. There aren’t many anglers catching mahi in state waters, but it’s worth noting that Florida anglers and charter operations have shown ample support for these cuts. Perhaps the fishery will see self-imposed restrictions on the part of anglers in federal waters. If you’re wondering why no one is screaming about commercial anglers in this issue, it’s because commercial harvest in U.S. waters of the Atlantic has made up only about 5 percent of landings over the last 30 years.

International Rod Building Competition Judges the Finest Rods in the World

he International Rod Building Challenge is a truly international competition, with builders from all over the world crafting some of the finest custom fishing rods on the planet. This year’s competition, judged in March in Oviedo, Fla., was the largest competition on record. More than 80 mystery blanks were sent out all over the world to North American builders as well as builders in Europe, South America and Asia. All the competitors returned their completed rods to be initially judged at International Custom Rod Building Expo by a panel of 30 judges to choose the top 10. The top 10 were then taken back to American Tackle Headquarters, where an elite panel of judges from custom rod builders, media, trade and anglers graded each rod. With such a high caliber of builders, it was amazing to see all the different styles and builds all based on the same blank. “It was incredible to see so many different interpretations on what the American Tackle Co. mystery blank could be used for,” said Don Morse of American Tackle Co. This year’s winner was Danny Thomson, of

North Carolina. His amazing custom rod build incorporated his love for duck hunting as well as fishing. Second place went to Hoove Brieuc, of Belgium, with his diode and cooper build. Third place was awarded to Gary Allner, of the United Kingdom, with his ultra-shift chameleon painted rod. The winner, Danny Thomson, said this about his build: “You may have heard of an Eastern North Carolina tragedy that recently occurred,

where four youth duck hunters and four adults went down in a plane crash. All eight lives were lost. BROWARD CLEANUP NETS 20 TONS OF TRASH

he Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) organized the 45th annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup on March 5. Presented by the Florida Inland Navigational District (F.I.N.D.), this annual cleanup is Broward’s largest and longest-running environmental event and began in the 1970s. This year, more than 1,100 volunteers gathered at more than 35 sites throughout Broward County to clean up waterways, parks and communities. Participants took part in the event by land and boat. In total, more than 20 tons of trash was cleaned up across the county. Some of the more unique items cleaned up included two cars, a boat, a guitar and a large gold chain. To thank volunteers, MIASF hosted its Trash Bash, the annual postevent celebration, at the Lauderdale Small Boat Club. This party gathers all volunteers, ranging in ages from 2 to 87, to celebrate with food and drinks, live music and raffles. “While taking care of our environment is a priority 365 days a year, it is exciting to bring the community together on this one day with the mission of cleaning our waterways,” said MIASF Vice President, Lori Wheeler, “This event creates the impact it does because of all of our incredibly passionate volunteers. It’s amazing to see the community come together, year after year, for a cause bigger than ourselves.”

he fight didn’t last long, maybe a couple of minutes, but it was exciting. Between bulldog runs, the fish broke the surface and walked on water, shaking its head in anger. When Kent Edmonds steered the fish out of the current and brought it to hand, a broad grin broke across the man’s face. He lifted a chunky shoal bass for appraisal before release. It was a decent fish, maybe 14 inches. Still, on a 6-weight fly rod, the strength of the fight rivaled that of a largemouth twice its size. Shoal bass are aggressive and pugnacious. They are an intriguing sport fish native to just one Southeastern river system.

Shoal Bass Fishing for “shoalies” is so much fun. They exhibit the aggression of any black bass, yet their preferred habitat is the swift-water shoals other bass avoid. Like trout, they hover in eddies and dart out to grab prey adrift in the current. They readily attack topwater lures and flies and grow to record weights approaching 9 pounds. Anglers regularly catch 2- to 5-pound shoal bass, and the largest fish reach lengths up to 24 inches. A new Georgia record was caught from the Chattahoochee River near Columbus, Ga. in December. It weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. The IGFA world record was an 8-pound, 12-ounce monster caught from Florida’s Apalachicola River. With all that going for it, the relative anonymity of shoal bass is due to geography. There is only one small slice of the world where they exist. The species is native 14 NATIONAL

to the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin, which drains portions of Georgia and Alabama down to the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida panhandle. They are a very cool fish that would be in serious trouble if not for one stretch of Georgia river. Extensive damming has turned ACF River Basin into a series of reservoirs. Shoal bass still exist in pockets across the entire drainage, but habitat alterations have allowed non-natives like spotted and smallmouth bass to out-compete and interbreed with shoal bass. The upper Flint River is the largest remaining stretch of unaltered native shoal bass habitat. It is arguably the best shoal bass fishery in the world.

The Flint River Edmonds has guided fly fishers on the Flint for about 30 years, and while he won’t admit it, he’s largely responsible for the river’s sterling reputation as a fishery. In rural Upson County, Ga., the Flint is like a snapshot back in time. It twists through pine forests of the middle Georgia countryside, undammed for some 220 miles. There’s a sweet spot for fly fishers in the middle of this long run at a geologic formation known as the Fall Line. The Fall Line is the coastline of an ancient sea that cuts a 20-mile-wide swath of rapid elevation loss across the region. PELAGIC HUNTING WITH THE CORRECT TOOLS

here are correct tools for any project, and we have to use our time wisely. First and foremost, I think water temperature is a key to finding the wahoo and tuna consistently. I know it costs a few bucks, but you can subscribe to some sites (not promoting any here) that will give you a very clear picture of where you can find a degree or two temperature break on the edge. Once you narrow down a distance and heading for the desired water temps, you then need to locate the bait. Granted, there are times when the fish will not be on the bait visible on the recorder or on the surface, but just oriented on structure and/or temperature break. This is when it gets down to visible and electronic hunting. There are electronics available that can locate individual and groups of birds at long distances. This is always a good thing to find. If you have a few birds working an area, chances are they are there because the bait is there. Again, I know this electronic equipment is costly, but it’s yet another tool that can narrow down the search for wahoo, tuna and dolphin.

Then there are tools we possess as humans such as good eyesight (good binoculars) and judgement. If you see a noticeable water color change, birds and/or fish feeding on the surface, weed lines and floating objects, chances are, you’ve found the correct general area. A lot of these floating objects will hold bait and fish, especially wahoo and dolphin. After narrowing down an area where the fish will likely be in due to temperature, depth, structure etc., this is when I prefer to high-speed troll. High-speed trolling is another tool to locate the fish, and not a tool to use all day! This is true for wahoo, especially. Once you get a bite, mark that location on the chart. Now it’s time to go back to that area and go to work on ’em. By this time of day, the sun is up pretty good, and the surface bite might slow down a little bit. Like I’ve always said, the fish don’t have Maui Jim’s shades, so they use depth to get the correct amount of light they want. They look up to see bait at, or near the surface like flyers, tinker, cigs and sardines. They also look down for the squid down deep. This is the reason the planer rod is typically the one that produces in the middle of the day. When the sun is high in the sky, it’s time to go deep with your baits. You can’t always catch them where you want to. You have to catch them where they are... down deep. ason Christie finally did it. In early March, he won the Bassmaster Classic on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell and was named champion of the biggest event in tournament bass fishing. In two previous Classics, Christie has held the lead headed into the final day of the tournament, once with a more than 6-pound lead and once with a 4-pound lead. Both times he came up short. This year, he found himself tied for the lead with newcomer Kyle Welcher after Day 2. “Honestly, when I was sitting at the door waiting to come in and weigh my fish, I thought I had given it away again,” said Christie. “Stetson Blaylock had just weighed in a big bag, and Kyle Welcher used to be a professional poker player, so I knew he had more than what he was saying. “I knew it was gonna be close. I honestly thought there could be a tie, and that was scary for me because I didn’t have any fish left.” After Welcher weighed in and took over the “Hot Seat” from Stetson Blaylock, who had just weighed the largest bag of the tournament, Welcher and Christie stood side by side as the largest crowd in the event’s history cheered awaiting the final tally. On the stage, Christie’s five-bass limit of 17 pounds, 9 ounces was 5 ounces heavier than Welcher’s bag of 17 pounds 4 ounces. Known as one of the best power-fishermen in the world, Christie utilized a 5/8-ounce War Eagle Jiu-Jigsu Jig with a Yum Craw Chunk in green pumpkin/purple. He used a green pumpkin/orange jig until the final day when he switched to straight green pumpkin because he “banged all of the other ones off docks” until they were unusable. He caught most of his fish on the final day fishing shallow docks in 1 to 3 feet of depth in clearer water where most of the other angler were not fishing. He liked the heavier jig due to its faster rate of fall, which drew reaction strikes. Christie, who returned to the Bassmaster Elite Series a year ago after as short tenure with MLF Fishing, was looking hard for redemption in this year’s Classic. Maybe beginning tied on the final day took some of the pressure off, because the third time was a charm for Christie, who took home a $300,000 purse for his win that pushed his total career earnings to over $1,668,000. Welcher earned $50,000 for finishing second with 53-11, and Blaylock earned $47,000 in third place with 53-5, which includes a $7,000 bonus for his Sunday catch of 20-9 that ranked as the Rapala Monster Bag of the Week. South Carolina pro Brandon Cobb earned $2,500 for overall Berkley Big Bass of the Week with the 6-12 largemouth he caught on Day 2.
