ISTIOPHORUS: THE MYSTERIOUS SAILFISH

he sailfish is one of the most commonly caught billfish. Due to its proclivity for shallower coastal waters and frequency of ascension to the surface, the odds of catching one of these beauties can be much greater than for other billfish. There is little scientific certainty about the mysterious behavior of sailfish. They exhibit a general migratory pattern throughout the year, but they often break their own rules and show up unexpectedly. Summer sailfish catches are generally more associated with the Gulf of Mexico, yet they do appear on the Atlantic coast this time of year, as well. Sailfishing in the Florida Keys is usually a late autumn and early spring

bite. It can be an absolute catching frenzy. However, in July, following the passage of tropical storm Elsa, sailfish were seen tailing at the surface, cruising the waves along a strong current line off of Marathon Key. It was a bizarre and welcomed phenomenon. The conditions that followed the storm created a concise current line, with greener nearshore waters touching the blue water, and a milky powder-blue highway running down the center. Sailfish were spotted swimming east to west at the top of the waves, and seemed to dive deeper to circle back. The locals are no strangers to this phenomenon that occurs in the Keys. Though the time of year may be unpredictable, anglers are always ready to make the most of it. This type of fishing requires polarized sunglasses and a tower boat. Slowly creeping through the powder blue highway, scan the waves for black torpedo shapes or blobs that resemble black garbage bags. Hunt for the opportunity to sight cast live baits. Without the visual vantage of a tower, trolling lures or bump trolling live bait may be more productive than trying to spot them from deck level. Sailfish truly are an incredible and unpredictable species. Very few have been successfully tagged, and few have held a tag long enough to transmit much information. Of those tagged for up to a year, their patterns were generally erratic. They seem to be extremely transient, foraging and spawning in many different coastal regions, predictably unpredictable, like majestic aquatic gypsies. Commonalities in their behavior are that they primarily stay within a water temperature of approximately 80 degrees; they mostly stay near the surface, rarely diving below 300 feet; and they exhibit extremely curious evening routines. All of the transmissions showed sailfish spending the evening within 30 feet of the surface, descending briefly before sunrise and sunset. They were also observed to be active nightly, seemingly unaffected by lunar phases. or Matt Metelsky, daddy-daughter time with his 17-year-old is a little more involved than a trip to the ice cream parlor. Matt’s daughter Lily is a rising high school senior. She loves nothing more than waking up at 2 a.m. to run 85 miles off Virginia Beach and troll the edge of the Continental Shelf with her dad. In late June, the duo fished the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, where Lily placed second in the Lady Angler division with a yellowfin that weighed 39.9 pounds. But that’s not her biggest tuna to-date. Her heaviest yellowfin weighed 44 pounds. She caught it last summer, and at 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, it took her about 15 minutes to haul it in stand-up with a belt. “I don’t know. We do wood work on the side, so we load wood, and I guess that gives you some back strength,” Lily offered as explanation for feats of fishing strength. “We always stay active. With Dad, it’s work hard, play harder.” Lily’s strength and stamina are a given considering she qualified and is working as an oceanfront lifeguard at Virginia Beach this summer. Matt, however, has another explanation for his daughter’s skill, as well as her love for this hard-core style of fishing. Lily was 5 years old when Matt purchased his Contender 25 with twin 150s. At a tender age, Lily cut her teeth going toe-to-toe with hard-pulling spadefish in 50 feet of water, 20 miles offshore. “I’m thinking the technique she picked up with those spades when she was little just kind of morphed over into the tuna,” Matt said. “It really amazes

me she is able to battle those things stand-up.” Lily began joining Matt for long days offshore when she turned 13. She was 15 the summer of 2019 when she was first physically able to handle a yellowfin—a 26-pounder—by herself. But pumping and reeling aren’t Lily’s only deck duties. She helps rig and bait and steers the boat while her dad deploys an eight-rod spread on the Gulf Stream. Last Jan. 11, she manned the helm while Matt battled a 550-pound bluefin. When the handle on the 50w reel broke under the stress, it was Lily’s idea to improvise with a screwdriver and electrical tape to eventually land that fish. The peak yellowfin season is June and July out of Rudee Inlet. Matt and Lily make five or six trips a summer, often with friends. Normal days consist of two or three tuna, some bonita and mahi, and occasionally a white marlin. Two or three times a year, January and February bluefin trips are just for the two of them. There aren’t many people interested in waiting on one big bite in brutal mid-winter conditions, anyway. “She’s just tough as nails,” Matt said of his daughter. “I don’t know how else to describe it. She’s just tough.” Lily doesn’t seem to perceive any hardship. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend time with her dad on the water. “When we’re out there on the boat, it’s just so peaceful,” she said. “I pretty much sleep the whole time. BAY COUNTY’S

t the mid-point of the Florida Panhandle, St. Andrew Bay dominates the map of Bay County, flanking Panama City on three sides. It’s a 107-square-mile inshore playground that bustles with all sorts of watersports during the heavy tourism months. But there’s a quieter side to St. Andrew. With access points spread throughout Bay County, skinny water is where it’s at for redfish anglers. The water is clear and maintains predictably high salinity thanks to limited freshwater inflow. There are vast prairies of spartina grass, cut through with channels, as well as acres of sand, mud and grass flats. Much of it is accessible only to shallow-draft vessels, and therein is the allure for folks seeking respite 2 FLORIDA

from party pontoons and jet skis. When you’re in less than 2 feet of water, the only other boats you’ll see are kayaks, paddleboards and flats skiffs. “I fell in love with inshore fishing and kayaking here because of the ease and lower expense,” said Josh Damon, who hails from Fountain, Fla., about 25 miles north of Panama City. “I enjoy the tranquility and access to areas big boats can’t reach.” The fishing is good, too. Damon is a passionate angler who enjoys inshore tournaments, so he specializes in redfish on artificials. He said a good day might results in five or six reds from 18 to 24 inches, with a few trout or flounder thrown into a mixed bag. He fishes from a paddle-powered kayak, which is perfectly at home in the one-and-a-half-foot depths he prefers. Redfish are comfortable and free from predatory threats in extreme shallows, and it’s also where the food is. St. Andrew reds grow fat on mullet, mud minnows, pinfish and a variety of other little baitfish. With good visibility, sight fishing is a good tactic. This time of year, there’s usually a good topwater bite in the mornings and evenings, and walking baits are a favorite of many anglers. Damon, however, fishes soft plastics almost exclusively. With tackle modifications, they can be worked across the top, bounced on the bottom or fished anywhere in between. They’re delicate enough for sight casting and also make great chunk-and-wind search baits. “Aside from the versatility of a soft-plastic bait, I don’t want a fish flopping around in the kayak with six hooks,” Damon said. At St. Andrew, Damon’s go-to lure is a 4-inch D.O.A. C.A.L. Shad Tail rigged on a 1/8-ounce 4/0 Screw Lock jig head. He likes the Houdini color and dresses it with Kings Stank Stick, a scent product he said increases hookups. He fishes variations of this set-up, but this basic rig gets the job done. For safety reasons as well effective fishing, planning is key. Damon studies wind and tide before selecting a put-in on a given day. ith the dog days upon us, night fishing can be productive and much more comfortable than slogging it out during the heat of the day. Many fish feed aggressively in the still of the night. They can be

targeted by anglers in multiple ways in different locations. Here are a few options to try. I’ve utilized all three methods and found success with each. • Perhaps the coolest strategy is wade fishing in the dark. Large trout and redfish move unbelievably shallow under the cover of the night sky, and tossing a topwater plug on the flats can result in exciting explosions. I typically wade in the dark without lights, other than a headlamp for changing lures or unhooking fish. With vision impaired, your sense of hearing is on high alert. Nighttime is quiet on the water, which makes the commotion of a topwater take startling. It can give the impression that a fish is larger than it really is. That’s part of the excitement of a topwater bite! For safety reasons, I only wade at night in areas I know well and have fished many times. • Another way to beat the heat is to focus on dock lights. This can be done from the dock, a kayak or a boat. Many canal homes have lights, both under water and above the surface. Lights attract baitfish, which in-turn attract the gamefish we target. Trout, reds and snook are all drawn to baitfish around lights at night. I like to target these areas with smaller lures. In this situation, I’ve had a lot of success throwing my Knockin Tail Lures, which are soft-plastic paddletails with a built-in rattle. Small, lipped hard baits can also be very productive around canal lights. I prefer natural colors, with some shade of white or clear and some silver mixed in. • Fish also feed around rock jetties at night. The setup for this bite requires a little more work, but it can yield terrific results. When jetty fishing, I bring a generator and two 1,500 watt stage lights. These areas typically have more current, so I fish slightly larger lipped hard lures, but I still go with the smallest lure I can work properly in the current. I stick with the same color pattern as mentioned earlier. The channel and surf side of the rocks can both be productive depending on the tide, water clarity and bait presence. I recommend pointing one light in each direction until you determine which areas have the best conditions. Night fishing definitely brings new challenges, but it can offer some of the best catching of the summer. Remember, safety first and don’t fish alone. Capt. Reports Look Mighty Good

eports from a few of the historic scalloping hotspots indicated a very good beginning to the season. Capt. Katie Jo Davis, of KD Outdoors Fishing Charters, said scalloping out of Crystal River and Homosassa has been great. “It’s been fantastic. It’s been a lot better year than the last few to be sure,” she said. “They have also been larger than in recent years. The quantity and quality are very good, and I expect it to continue into August and September.” Davis said they are finding scallops six and seven at a time in 2 to 6 feet of water. She took her 6-year-old out, and it took them about an hour to get their 2-gallon limit. Up in Steinhatchee, there are reports of plentiful scallops. Headed north out of the river, scallopers are seeing tons of scallops in 6- to 7-foot depths. The bottom is loaded with them, but they are on the small side. Headed south, scallops are running larger, but there are not as many. Either way, quick limits are being reported. With the bulk of the season still ahead for most of the scalloping zones and Gulf County opening up this month, it’s shaping up to be a mighty good year for scallops. ARC KDW Tourney Raises $45,000 for Martin County

nglers of all ages fished the ARC of Martin County’s seventh annual ARC KDW Offshore Fishing Tournament on Sat., June 19, in Port Salerno, Florida. It was the first in-person fundraiser for ARC since pre-COVID, providing much needed operating funds to benefit over 400 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the Treasure Coast. The weather was great, the fishing was, well, fishing! While the fish weighed in were all under 12-pounds, with no wahoo or grouper being reported, 21 boats and 89 participants fished under blue skies and fair winds returning midafternoon to Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina to weigh-in their catch and attend the evening’s festivities. Team Real Tradition was top boat, winning in multiple categories, though the junior anglers stole the show with their energy and fishing prowess! Then there was My Other Honey and Capt. Pete Morello, who again sponsored capable adults with

disabilities to enjoy some catching. The virtual, but viewable, in-person auction continued taking bids online through the week, allowing all participants to relax and enjoy the evening including a BBQ dinner and event only raffles. Next year, the ARC of Martin’s goal is to attract more area charter boats and private owners willing to take out one or two individuals with disabilities. Local vendors graciously donated silent auction items raising over $6,000. Corporate and local area business sponsors (full list available at www.arcmc.org) and various private donors stepped up to make the ARC’s first post covid in-person event the best one yet. The ARC of Martin County, (Advocates for the Rights of the Challenged) is a 501(c)(3) nonfor-profit organization dedicated to empowering children and adults with I/DD through residential, vocational, educational, behavioral, and other healthcare services. The non-profit has been providing services since 1956.

“Our goal is to provide support, assistance and training that will enhance the abilities for children and adults with disabilities to thrive each day and achieve their fullest potential,” said ARC President and CEO Keith Muniz. he seventh installment of the Backcountry Fishing Association series took place out of Little Jim Bait and Tackle on July 3 and in star-spangled fashion a beautiful summer day ended with thundering afternoon storms, resulting with only six boats weighing fish—two redfish and four trout. Newlyweds Hanna and Sean Tillett took first place with a 5.67-pound redfish, earning a $394 payout. The couple topped the day with an extra $180 for the redfish Calcutta. Kyle Engelmann and his alternate Brandon Damron took second place with a 5.33-pound trout, winning $236. The duo also won $180 for the trout Calcutta. Andy Fantini took third place with a 5.26-pound redfish, earning $158. Troy Wilson and Tim Woodward took fourth place with a 4.04-pound trout, which earned the team circuit points. The Backcountry Fishing Association tournament is a ninemonth circuit which runs from January thru September, with a twoday Classic held in October. The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers the opportunity to win cash and gain points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for

weigh in and live release. Teams must participate in at least five tournaments to be eligible to fish the Classic which is a two-day event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season are given a bye from day one. The remaining eligible teams compete on an elimination basis the first day, where only the top five teams of day one progress to day two to compete against the season point leaders for the grand prize and cash

for the top four teams. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournament each month, the fee is $60 per team. The next tournament is Sat., Aug. 7, with a captain’s meeting on Fri., August 6, at Little Jim Bait and Tackle, 601 North Causeway, Fort Pierce, Fla. oming off such an incredible July, we can only hope that August will offer up some leftover action as the water continues to warm. Sails, mahi, blackfin and kingfish have been staging in large numbers off the Treasure Coast from 85-to-135 feet for the last couple months and baring an influx of fresh water from the locks, I don’t see any reason for it to stop until the water warms to over 84 degrees. Live baiting is the ticket for your best chances at variety and overall success. This is a great time of year to kite fish, so breakout the SFE kites, the 6’6” 12-20lb Blackfin Rods with Marquesa 30’s and get out there ASAP. On days when live bait isn’t available or if there is no obvious condition and you’d like

to cover some ground and find the fish before you set out the live bait, trolling has been good and definitely worth doing. (As long as there isn’t too much grass.) Spend your time fishing around float, weed lines and current edges. If you don’t see an obvious condition, try trolling along the Six Mile or Eight Mile reefs or slide out a little deeper to Push Button Hill. These pelagic predators migrate up and down our reef systems and tend to congregate

around any large underwater structures. Trolling ballyhoo, small lures and a combination of the two for the mahi—little jigs or feathers— trolled so they are pretty far back, but still skipping, is the key to catching those blackfin on the “Hill”, and a simple spoon rigged on wire attached to the downrigger will add kings, mahi and even blackfin and cobia to your Yeti. This time of year, I really like sending a bait down. I use the

Cannon 10 TS downrigger paired with my Solix units through my HumminBird One-Boat Network™. I can operate everything right from the console through the Solix or even my phone, so since I usually fish without a mate, that’s a huge help. There has been a ton of Sargassum weed, which makes pulling any teaser, especially a dredge, very difficult but if and when conditions allow, I always recommend that. Hopefully, fishing will be good enough where you can cull your catch. With the mahi, after you box a few, it’s a wonderful practice to start releasing smaller ones and try to only keep the males if you can. Remember, if you are not going to smoke the kingfish, it doesn’t freeze well, so don’t keep a bunch. Keep a bottom rod ready, especially while you’re live baiting. As you are drifting along keep an eye on your sonar and when you mark something be ready to drop on it. If you have it, the side imaging feature definitely aids in knowing what’s coming, so that’s a huge advantage. Expect cobia, amberjacks, grouper and snapper. he summer continues as we see different bait schooling up along the coast bringing with it lots of hungry fish! The silverside minnows are one of my favorite baits to find schooled up along the beaches and inlet jetties getting gulped by snook, tarpon, and big jacks. We mostly use artificials such as YoZuri 2.75-inch Crystal Minnows and D.O.A. Jerk Baits. The tarpon bite continues back in the St. Lucie River with juvenile 20to-50 pounders rolling near docks and oyster beds 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. For the juveniles, live finger mullet

or D.O.A. Rootbeer TerrorEyz are your best bet. The summer snapper bite has been great with muttons, lanes, and nice mangroves caught on shallow wrecks 3-to-6 miles out with live bait and chunks. The Spanish sardines started showing up at Bull Shark Barge, and they work great for fresh cut bait. There’s also countless bonito at the shallow wrecks that provide a fun opportunity for fly-fishermen to use a sinking line to get their fly down 30-to-50 feet deep, and then quickly double-hand strip to hook into these solid-muscle-fish. The “mullet run” can begin towards the end of August as we start seeing lots of 8-to-10-inch silver mullet schooling up on the flats and around bridges. This makes for a great opportunity to target tarpon near the “crossroads”, St. Lucie Inlet, and causeways early in the morning. We use 7/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks with these 8-to-10-inch mullet with 50-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader. As the mullet run continues into September, big schools of 4–to6-inch finger mullet start to work

their way down the beaches and Indian River. The best times to fish the mullet run is early morning 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. before the fish fill up and get lazy.

Snapper fishing will be the go-to strategy for near coastal “meat hunters” as many local species of snapper, including lane, vermilion, mangrove (gray), and mutton, will be engaged in their yearly spawning period this month. These snapper, and the salty groceries they represent, will populate an expansive swath of Martin County’s reef system from 50 to 180 feet of water, allowing captains and anglers to dial in a daily fishing strategy that best fits individual desires and abilities. Depths of 55 to 95 feet of water will be the focal point for most snapper fishing and will allow anglers to catch representatives from all four categories of snapper mentioned above. “Snapper Grand Slams” will be a highly achievable feat during offshore bottom fishing outings this month, as these representatives of the snapper

family coexist at similar reef sites and will fall prey to similar baits and tackle presentations. All varieties of cut bait, including squid, bonito, sardines, and ballyhoo (to name a few), will result in snapper catching success. Chicken rigs and single hook, straight leader rigs will suffice for bait delivery options to these tasty bottom dwellers. Large cut baits and live baits presented at the end of longer (20 to 70 feet) straight leaders will produce a snapper bite from larger representatives of the mutton and mangrove species at these same reef locations. Grouper will also be found alongside schools of spawning snapper at these some reef outcroppings, making a bottom fishing strategy for a day’s outing, a highly desirable option. As in all summer months, fishing teams must maintain a healthy concern for thunderstorm activity and shape their trips accordingly. So, in August, stock the boat up with plenty of lead and cut bait and target the many species of bottom fish that inhabit the near shore waters of the Treasure Coast.

summer, the snapper fishing will continue to be exciting. In addition to the wide variety of snapper available, the cobia will be making some moves as the water (temperatures and currents) do the same. Baitfish are plentiful, and the availability of live bait (shiners, goggle eyes, and pilchards) give the summertime anglers an added advantage. Nighttime fishing offers booming catches and a cool break from the unforgiving August sun. Grab your favorite spinning setup, your livewell and hit the reef. Live bait will be plentiful, and you can find pilchards right along the beach, with sardines and cigar minnows along the second (outer) reef. Live bait is a great way to increase your bite and presenting lighter tackle and a change in bait, day or night, will make for increased catches. The words cold water upwelling makes any angler cringe, and the presence of cold seabeds will pester anglers once again in the late summer months. We expect to see a thermocline, or cold water upwelling, that will cause some changes in the bottom fishing bite. The upwellings are nutrient-rich and bring both positive and negative changes to the snapper and reef fish game. On the up-side, cold water pushes the cobia to the surface which makes for great targeting, catch and dinner. On the flipside is the snapper bite. The cold water is known to cause the snappers to take on a “lock jaw” attitude. Thankfully, we know of a few tricks to fight off the “lock-jaw” and keep the snappers biting. Safety first is key as boat traffic increases over the summer. Lobster

appy August everyone, I hope everyone enjoyed mini lobster season and the red snapper season. If you were not able to partake, I hope that next year you will get to! Fishing along the Treasure Coast is RED HOT right now! We have been catching large numbers of snapper, mahi-mahi, cobia and kingfish.

NEARSHORE (6-10 MILES) Right now, nearshore the live bait bite is on. Mahi-mahi are being caught anywhere from 60-to-90 foot of water using live greenies and pilchards. The most effective way to catch them has been to anchor up on the reef (60-to90 feet) and run a flat line on top out of the back of the boat. The mahi have been cruising by and smashing the flatline while we are bottom fishing. The same tactic has been working for the cobia and kingfish as well. I like to fish a wire kingfish rig on my flatline

in case of a toothy bite. The mahi will not shy away from this rig and you will still be able to land a kingfish or wahoo bite as well. The snapper bite on the reef in 75-to-85 foot of water has been spectacular as well. There have been multiple mutton snapper over 10 pounds caught in the last few weeks and many days of limits of mangroves in excess of 25 fish a day caught. When fishing for mutton snapper, we have been using 50-pound braid mainline with a 6-ounce weight, to a swivel and then 10-to-12 foot of 60-pound fluorocarbon leader. The bait of choice has been a live pilchard or a live sardine. When fishing for the mangrove snapper we are using the same rig and leader length but with 30-pound fluorocarbon leader. The baits of choice are cut grunt, shrimp, cut greenies, cut pilchards, and also live or frozen sardines. If you can find some cigar minnows, they also are working great. The grounds directly off of the Fort Pierce Inlet and then north off of Vero Shores in 80 foot of water have been the most productive. If you find yourself not catching any fish, just move north or south of where you are fishing, the reef runs for miles and the current/conditions will change every few miles up or down the reef. he inshore fishing should be red hot for trout and redfish on the flats, both to the north and south in the river. First light and just before dark will be the best times. For the trout try using live baits like a pilchard or a pigfish and fish them under a popping cork. Also try an artificial bait like a D.O.A. Bait Buster or some other top water bait. Use the natural-colored baits. Later in the morning, fish a little deeper and use a live shrimp. For the redfish, you will want to try the same baits along with a gold spoon. Fish the docks along both north and south Indian River Drive and around any mangroves. The snapper bite should continue to be good along the channel edges and around the local bridges. Try using a live shrimp on a 2-foot leader of 20-pound fluorocarbon, a ½-ounce weight and a #2 hook. Catch and release snook action

bridge with live bait, or cast plugs, bucktails or soft plastic swimbaits from the rocks. Catch and release is the law until September 1, so please handle the snook with care. Bull reds will also take advantage of the buffet provided by the inlets outgoing tides. Live and cut bait can be effective for reds along the edge of the rip at the mouth of the inlet. When juvenile crabs decide to catch a ride on the outgoing tide, big reds and permit can often be seen slurping them off the surface along the rip created by the outgoing tide as it pushes into the ocean. Topwater plugs, poppers, crab flies and live crabs properly placed will do the trick.

SEBASTIAN RIVER – The north fork of the Sebastian River is usually the place to look for tarpon in the early morning and evening. Flies, plugs, D.O.A. Trout and redfish have been hard to find in the Sebastian area this summer. If you can find a flat or drop-off harboring a concentration of baitfish, there is a good chance predators, including trout and reds, will be nearby. The lackluster trout

and redfish bite has been made up for by a noticeable increase in snook numbers in the lagoon. Fishing around docks and mangrove shorelines has been a great way to bend a rod this summer. Skipping D.O.A. shrimp and jerkbaits under cover will produce violent strikes from linesiders of all sizes. ugust’s fishing forecast will consist of catch and release snook around your local bridges and jetties. The outgoing tide should be best. Be on the lookout for a silver king, also known as tarpon. This fish will give you everything you want as a landbased angler. I like throwing big swim baits and small plugs to these fish. Focusing on afternoon fishing trips, the summertime thunderstorms will really get the fish fired up for a great evening bite. Make sure you bring heavy tackle; you do not want to be under-gunned.

I also enjoy bass fishing this time of year, walking local ponds and canals. Throwing frogs or weedless twitch baits will be very productive. This can also be an afternoon thing. Wade fishing in the morning along the east side of the Indian River lagoon throwing topwater plugs at first light for big seatrout and snook will always be something exciting way to start your day. August can be extremely hot so getting out at night is something that will be very productive during the summer months. There will also be a lot of bait fish showing up as we are getting closer to the mullet run. August will start the action and September and October should be on fire for some insane mullet run action. Good luck on your next adventure and always remember to support the belly of a big fish when you are taking a photo. This is very important to help improve the fish’s survival rate. INSHORE: Summer heat is here!

The beaches and inlets are still your best bets for snook fishing. Bucktail jigs and live bait fished near the bottom around the mouths of the inlets work well. Fishing these areas in a kayak can be dangerous. Be aware of tide and boat traffic at all times. On an incoming tide you can launch right at the south jetty at Jupiter inlet. Fish the outside and drift in the inlet with the tide. Fighting the tide in the inlet will be a challenge so maximize time on the outside jetties.

OFFSHORE: The offshore bite will slow as usual this

time of year. Running the normal depths of 90-to-220 off Boynton Beach and Palm Beach will still produce the sailfish, small kings and tuna, but with lower numbers. Look to run out five-to-eight miles to find the dolphin bite. Most will be small, but there are chances for a big bull. The wahoo bite is also something not to forget about. As usual running baits on a downrigger anywhere from 60-to80 feet below surface will give you an opportunity to land a wahoo. n the past, we have experienced many great years of pan fishing. This year has provided some of the best summertime catches of shellcracker I can ever remember. Of course, the big bluegill are caught in the same areas as the shellcracker, but anyone that has eaten freshly caught and fried shellcracker filets know exactly what I am alluding to. The tremendous run of shellcracker started on the full moon in April and has continued on each moon phase up through August. How long it can and will continue remains to be seen. With the water level in the 12 to 13-foot range, the panfish stayed mostly to the outside edges of the vegetation, some even fanning spawning beds well out into

the lake, where the water is still only two to three feet. The primary baits have been grass shrimp, red worms, and crickets. Many anglers target and catch large numbers of bluegill on a fly rod and popping bugs when they are in such shallow water. Bass fishing tournament anglers have found that it takes 5 bass that weigh 25 to 30 pounds to win a tournament on the lake. The numbers of quality-sized bass in the 5 to 10-pound range caught this summer has been staggering, and these bass

are growing each season getting bigger and fatter. During the summer months, we try to get onto the water before sunup, if possible, to take advantage of schooling action that takes place along the outside grass lines. Bass can be seen and heard blasting baitfish, such as shad and shiners, in the cover and sometimes well out into the lake. When they are schooling on bait, a spinner tossed well back into the grass and worked toward the outside edge can present heart-stopping action. Some mornings we catch 8 to 12 bass and the action ends quickly, other days we may catch 35 to 40 in the first couple of hours. The catching can end in a second and the rhyme or reason eludes me but the sun rising higher into the sky is certainly one reason. Once they quit eating the spinnerbait, we switch to soft plastics, flukes, speed worms, and Senkos being a key part of our arsenal. Those anglers who want to target only large bass very often will opt to flip and pitch matted vegetation or thick clumps of bulrush with creature-style baits. There are many styles, configurations, and colors of creature-style baits, some use a jig with a trailer others use a punch skirt and creature baits.

There really aren’t any secrets. The best anglers in the world are those who spend their time on the water consistently, dissecting depth and cover changes like a surgeon, taking advantage of every possible angle to get the most out of each area that may hold bass. Many amateurs, however, will stay in an area that is not producing for them, especially if they have caught bass there before; know when to move and be decisive about your game plan, are all keys to success. Captain’s Tip: As a rule, always use the lightest weight possible when fishing with plastics. It won’t inhibit the action built into the bait. As the water temperature has increased over the last month, we have found ourselves using heavier weights to get the bait right on the bottom in the face of the fish. We are also finding better success by using a slower presentation. Inch the bait along to keep it in the strike zone for as long as possible. The water level has risen just enough that the outside grass lines are fishable. It requires shutting down the boat well offshore of the spot and idling in to fish, but it is well worth the effort.

ugust on the Treasure Coast is an exciting time of year to be in the water because lobster season is back, and grouper/hogfish seasons continue to remain open. Manly locals who skipped the rush of lobster mini-season, may time their first dive trip in August to coincide with opening weekend of lobster season. Since grouper and hogfish seasons are both open, buddy teams may consider each taking a different role on the dive to increase the odds of success and not to get too overloaded with equipment. For example, one diver has lobster and lionfish supplies and the other carries the speargun and fish stringer. This way, each diver has a narrow objective, the other can lend help as needed and both can

focus on being good at only one or two activities yet still have all options covered. Last month, divers reported strong cold water upwellings up and down the coast with bottom temperatures reaching the low 60s for a few days. Short-lived cool spells are common this time of year, usually don’t last more than a few days to a week and are even welcomed by some to beat the heat at the surface. Even on hot summer days, divers are wise to pack a wetsuit just in case. Some believe cold water can help to drive fish and lobster into shallower reefs from far offshore as they try to escape the chilly conditions. Lobster with bright orange or purple bodies are thought to move in from deep reefs and are usually found after cold water moved through. Luckily, the Gulf Stream’s strong currents do usually flush away upwellings in a week or two and for this reason, drift diving is the way to go. It’s important captains and divers review some important details before diving in heavy currents. Carrying a float ball is a critical part of the process and knowing what to do if the float line snaps or the ball gets pulled under while a diver is hooked off to the bottom

can help everyone get back on board safely. Large capacity reels for more scope, handheld grappling hooks to hold the bottom and a two-buoy system are all great ways to handle heavy current. Large, rigid float balls with more volume tend to stay on the surface better them small Styrofoam styles used by snorkelers.

Establishing an emergency recall system (like revving the engines three times) and agreeing when to activate professional search and rescue in the event of separation are all good practices. Divers should carry signal devices with them in the water like inflatable safety sausages, signal mirrors and whistles.

“These Fish Are Not Chewing”

his was a comment from one of my recent customers after missing a few fish while sight fishing for snook. Here I am, being a flyfishing guide with a strong and straight mind set when it comes to my game, fly fishing. His presentation was far from precise, and he didn’t hit the right spot most of the time. He was still convinced that these fish were not chewing and even with my guidance and gentle reminders he just didn’t “get” it. Yes, I know that some days are tougher with less fish chewing but how can you make this presumption without factoring in your casting skill and presentation. Some fishermen struggle and just can’t deliver, especially when they have big fish in front of them and that’s fine. Be open and listen to your guide and he will find an opportunity for your level to catch a fish but please don’t blame the fish for your failure! When you’re out fishing by yourself, be aware of what’s going on with the fish. I usually start fishing with one fly that I trust and if I’m not getting any reaction from the fish, I change my fly, leader or whatever I feel is needed. I always make sure that I offer my A-game to the fish, meaning precise casting. Being a fly guide, I put all on the table and work hard to provide opportunities for my customers

rogress on the deployment of the Tug Singleton continues. On June 27, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners formally accepted a grant contract with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and accepted a work authorization for McCulley Marine Resources, Inc. to prepare and deploy the tugboat. Saltwater Interactive, LLC, has also been communicating with the Blake Charron Foundation. The foundation has pledged funds to acquire the naming rights for this deployment. The tugboat is scheduled for deployment in late August, subject to passing a United States Coast Guard inspection. The Marine Cleanup Initiative, Inc. (MCII) has remained focused on water quality issues and other aquatic habitats in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and its tributaries. The St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program welcomes the partnership with MCII and its emphasis on improving water quality. The water column is part of what the National Marine Fisheries Service defines as ‘Essential Fish Habitat’.

Water entering the IRL via the C-44 and C-25 canals, Moore’s Creek, as well as effluents from stormwater outfalls, impacts fish habitats in the Indian River Lagoon which diminishes the ability of the IRL to support healthy fish stocks. MCII is spearheading an effort to bring a Watergoat to Moore’s Creek to help keep floating debris from entering the Indian River Lagoon. Watergoats are floating booms that collect trash that has been discarded or blown into the water. They can be highly effective in removing certain kinds of materials but have to be maintained by groups of volunteers. SWORD Outreach and Mentoring, in conjunction with MCII will maintain the Watergoat, subject to City of Fort Pierce approval. In addition to its concerns with water quality, MCII is raising funds for the deployment of St. Lucie County’s next steel vessel, Tug Alois. One of the fund raising events includes the Little Jim/ Summerlin Fish Fry held at the end of July. The festival celebrated the rich nautical heritage in St. Lucie County, especially that of Summerlin’s

Marine Construction and McCulley Marine Services as pioneers in artificial reef deployment. The Tug Alois is a former Navy submarine tender and is very heavy, making it an ideal candidate to be deployed in water depths less than 150 feet. MCII is also partnering with the Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club (FPSC) to revitalize the Club’s operations. A staple of fishing and conservation efforts for 40 years, the FPSC promotes both fishing and habitat conservation in the Fort Pierce area. In 1989, the FPSC helped the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council establish Special Management Zone regulations prohibiting highly efficient fishing gear on some of the County’s artificial reef sites. St. Lucie County’s SMZs were one of the first in the nation and were meant to

LOSOM Plan in the Spotlight

or good reason, our focus at Indian Riverkeeper has been laser-sharp on the progress of the formulation of the Army Corps’ Lake Okeechobee Systems Operation Manual (LOSOM) that will replace the original Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule (LORS), which dictated where and when Lake water would be dispersed for good or for bad. For bad would apply to Lake Okeechobee discharges to the northern Everglades coastal estuaries (St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee) and Florida Bay. For good largely applies to agricultural interests and to a lesser degree, the municipal drinking water supply in Palm Beach County. The estuaries are routinely wrecked by the massive blasts of fresh water laden with pollutants, excess nutrients, and now that the Lake blooms with Cyanobacteria annually, toxins that harm marine life, people, and pets. For the record, under LORS, Palm Beach water supplies never dried up. And you can be sure that growers of sugar in the Everglades Agricultural Area never had to worry about irrigation. They are guaranteed that water supply, whether the Lake is high or low. So, the adversity has not been shared

across the board. That must change. The Army Corps has whittled the LOSOM alternatives down to 6 plans, AA through EE. Each plan seeks to establish “balance” in the Corps’ own words, but balance is not what Treasure Coast residents should be seeking. The St. Lucie River estuary and lower Indian River Lagoon needs not one drop of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee. The C44 canal which was built to connect the Lake to the headwaters of the St. Lucie has served up nothing but harm for over 80 years. It’s not about balance. It’s about harm. Only harm has resulted from Lake O water over the years. And it is high time to ensure that Lake Okeechobee discharges and the damage wrought come to an end. The LOSOM plan that Indian Riverkeeper and most Treasure Coast water activists prefer is Plan CC with an amendment or two that ensures that any Lake water diverted from this estuary go to environmental benefit, especially increased flow to Florida Bay. We also support more protection for the Lake Worth Lagoon, our sister estuary down the coast. Its waters are impaired as is with greater urban density, and Lake O discharges have adverse impacts

The PDT is comprised of local government officials, and other business community stakeholders. So, there will be a lot more “pushing and pulling” to be had until a final plan is chosen and sent to the public for further comment. Indian Riverkeeper is present in all LOSOM meetings, with our firm conviction to Plan CC, which diverts the maximum volume of Lake water possible (a 75% decrease), with the exception of emergency events, such as heavy hurricane rains threatening the Lake dike during already highwater periods. Plans such as BB are more beneficial to agricultural interests which are most concerned about water supply to irrigate crops. This plan does not benefit the beleaguered estuaries at all. We stress that you can add your voice to the LOSOM dialogue as a stakeholder. You can take part in meetings, and workshops, delivered virtually by Zoom. You can make written comments, too. t’s hot. The bass are transitioning, and the fishing can be very fun if you can locate them. Generally, summer bass are chasing baitfish. This can group fish up and make them eager to eat easy meals off the surface. Whether you’re throwing a walking bait, a buzzbait or even a popper, topwater lures can do some extreme damage in the heat of summer. When targeting fish chasing bait near shallow water, I like a popper-style bait or a bait that kicks up water, like a buzzbait or a Whopper Plopper. Bank dwellers usually chase bluegill and shad. They can be very aggressive and fun to target. Always keep your eyes peeled for movement and baitfish activity when you’re working down the bank. Bass won’t be far from this activity. Often times in the summer, fish group up near deeper water to harass large schools of baitfish. The baitfish will be different from lake to lake and region to region, but the patterns will be similar. Focus on points and humps, where the fish can push and ambush bait. These deeper fish tend to show themselves, and you’ll sometimes see them schooling on top or chasing bait near the surface. Keep your eyes and ears open

for activity. When schooling activity occurs, you want to get a bait in the mix as quickly as possible. I like a walking bait for this scenario and throw Spook-style baits like

the size of your lure to the size and shape of the baitfish will result in more bites. Always look for activity, and be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Summertime is an awesome time to fish, and it’s my absolute favorite time of year to throw a topwater.

Topwater Gear When targeting fish chasing bait near the shallows with a popper or a buzzbait, I like a shorter rod for more accurate casts. I use a 13 fishing 7’ 1” MH Omen Black casting rod paired with an 8:3:1Concept A reel spooled up with 20-pound monofilament or 40-pound braided line. When chasing schooling fish in deeper water, I like a longer rod for longer casts. I use a 13 Fishing 7’ 5” Omen Black casting rod paired up with an 8:3:1 Concept A reel spooled with 30-pound Seaguar Smackdown braid. The braid and the long rod pair up to allow long casts to get the bait in the strike zone when fish come up schooling far from the boat. The fast gear ratio reel is important in both the shallow and deep scenarios. CAMP FOR TROUT DEEP IN THE SMOKIES By Nick Carter

hen the boat dropped us off Friday morning, it was with an understanding someone would return for us Sunday afternoon. We debarked into two nights and three days of camping and trout fishing deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With no cell service or road access for miles in any direction, we were about as disconnected as you can get in this part of the world. It was a glorious feeling. Actually, one of our guides, Jake Tallent, of Fish Tales Outfitters in Franklin, N.C., had a satellite phone/EPIRB “for emergencies.” Around the campfire one night, he admitted using it to text his girlfriend. Guess the whole out-of-touch and roughing-it fantasy is a little outdated these days. We weren’t really roughing it much at all. Tallent and our other guide, Nick Potts, rolled cartloads of gear up the trail to our campsite near the mouth of Hazel Creek. Three other clients and I sat in camp chairs and got to know each other while the guides set up camp. That set the mood for the weekend. The camping was comfortable, everything was provided for. All we were expected to do was fish hard, enjoy ourselves and return to hot meals around a campfire each evening. Hazel Creek flows through high mountains on the north shore of

North Carolina’s Lake Fontana. Road access to the north shore was completely cut off in the 1940s, when TVA flooded this impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. Abandoned, the communities that existed there returned to the forest. In three-quarters of a century since, it has become one of the most beautiful and historically intriguing areas of the Smokies. The best access is by boat across the lake. Proctor, N.C. is the ghost town on Hazel Creek. The town’s main drag, Calico Street, is now the gravel trail that parallels the creek for 15 miles up into the hills. Ruins of Proctor are hidden everywhere in the creek and up steep wooded hillsides. Tallent regaled us with history as we passed landmarks hiking upstream in search of good trout water each day. The creek itself is on the large side of typical for the park. It is cold and clear with a relatively flat gradient that makes for easy streamside hiking. A mix of boulder-strewn stretches and bedrock shoals create interesting holding water. There are also some deep, dark pools. Hazel Creek is loaded with beautiful 7- to 12-inch stream-born rainbow trout. There are also some big browns lurking in the deep holes. Over three days of fishing, we caught good numbers of fish with simple dry-dropper rigs on 3- and 4-weight fly rods. There’s nothing more fun than wading up a mountain stream to toy with wild trout that are eager to jump on a dry fly. Hazel Creek is a gorgeous place to do it.
