Bimini Bay Sets A New Standard With BloodGuard Apparel By CAM Staff

F

Bay an industry leader in today’s outdoor apparel industry. Always in the forefront of new fabric technology, Bimini Bay has also been a manufacturing leader in creating moisture management systems. Their shirts are engineered to keep the body comfortable and dry by drawing moisture to the fabric’s surface (wicking) where it can quickly evaporate. Now, with the introduction of their BloodGuard line, they have set a new standard in the industry. Try one of these new BloodGuard shirts for yourself. Blood washes right off with only water. No more bringing detergents or peroxide on the boat or dock to spare your favorite fishing shirt. Designed and tested in the field with real anglers, this new line of outdoor apparel is destined to set a new standard in the industry.

For more information on this exicting new line of outdoor apparel visit www.biminibayoutfitters.com. Check out BloodGuard in action in a video at https:// www.bloodguard.org/.

Living The T

he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Poncho: “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” Poncho is a new company that makes just one thing: a fishing shirt. We like that focus. Poncho calls their shirt “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” We’re impressed with the fast-drying fabric and innovative magnetic pocket flaps, which you can easily open with one hand. Smart details like a built-in eyeglass cleaner, slot to hang your sunglasses, roll-up sleeve tabs, and hidden zipper pocket will make anglers happy. They even go the extra mile by offering both relaxed and slim sizes. Poncho founder Clay Spencer grew up fishing the humid Texas coast. He’s also a former Alaskan fly fishing guide, so he knows a thing or two about extreme conditions. Clay said, “I made the Poncho shirt for guys who are serious about being comfortable on the water and don’t want a bunch of gimmicks. I cut the velcro, loops and baggy pockets. This shirt is made to have everything you need—and nothing you don’t.” Get a free hat with purchase of a shirt with code COASTALMAG. Gillz Apparel –

By Anglers For Anglers

G

illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor

O

ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

MARCH 2019

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. Join or follow the adventure, and learn how the foundation’s “Salt Supply” program is connecting saltwater-based vendors and guides with CF patients. For more information, see www.crossingforacure.com/ and www.facebook.com/CrossingForACure/.

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

12

FLORIDA

CANGL_FL1-FL24.indd 12

MARCH 2019

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. You’ll learn to navigate the site, identify wildlife and recognize indicators of dens for animals like octopuses. Sign up for an upcoming class by calling 561-8408750.

W

elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Get out and enjoy the weather, and remember to take a kid fishing! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

TAMPA BAY FISHING REPORT BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE

I

f February was any indication, our snook bite should be good in March. As the water temperatures begin rising, snook should continue moving into their summertime patterns and start chasing a few sardines. Greenbacks should begin showing up and live bait anglers will be getting out that dreaded cast net. Look for snook to pattern along outside edges and points along mangrove islands and shoreline--especially where tidal flows move bait. Our miles of grass flats with sandy potholes also offer excellent ambush locations. Live bait, suspending lures, topwater’s and soft

plastics always produce. There’s nothing more exciting to a redfish angler than easing onto a shallow grass flat and seeing tailing fish. The first thing is to identify which direction they are feeding and approach quietly from the other. Now comes the tricky part. Using a perfectly placed cast, try picking off the outside fish. Never cast directly into the school. I’m mentioning mullet schools again, because it bares repeating. When trying to locate feeding redfish, remember they follow schooling mullet eating the baits they stir up. So, I guess it stands to reason that fishing mullet schools usually produces reds. Some anglers use the dead stick method with cut ladyfish, mullet or chunks of crabs. Others still prefer artificial lures or live bait. Whatever you use, just remember schooling mullet on a grass flat. What does March, incoming tides, outgoing tides, fifty-cent size pinfish, shrimp, small sardines, popping corks, grass flats and broken bottom equal? They equal good catches of spotted sea trout. Also, I cannot overemphasize the excitement of using topwater lures on calm early morning trout grass flats. Trout love MirrOLure Top Dog Jr.

and MirrOMullet. Twitch or “walk-the-dog.” Pause the lure momentarily after each series. The anticipation is un-nerving. Sheepshead, snapper and cobia are showing up almost everywhere--especially around docks and canals. These tough, toothy, boney mouths mean aggressive hook sets. Try fishing for these great fighters around markers, bridge fenders, docks, seawalls, rock piles, oyster bars or practically any type of structure. I like shrimp for cobia. Check markers and cans holding bait, and be ready to toss something in the path of a circling cobia. Not picky about food, cobia will readily take large shrimp, small crabs, and pinfish. Or, toss them an artificial jerk bait or plastic eel. “Give Me a Call & Let’s Go Fishing” Captain Woody Gore is the area’s top outdoor fishing guide. MARCH CAN BE A CRAZY GOOD MONTH BY: CAPT. MIKE ANDERSON

M

arch is by far one of our craziest months. It can bring complete madness to those of us who love to fish, and is usually the month when things come alive on Florida’s west coast. As water temps slowly climb, the bait will become plentiful back on the flats and become the food of choice. Big speckled trout fishing should be great this month on both live bait and artificial lures on shallow dark bottom flats. Baits like the Mirro-Lure Mirrodine will do very well this month. Big trophy-sized snook will slowly start their push from the deep back water Winter haunts out onto the flats for the Spring feed. They are usually very hungry as they come out due to the warming water and a need to fatten up for the Summer spawn. Redfish schools will appear on the flats in mid-March. They seem to know that the bait has shown up and they come to enjoy the easy feast. New schools of redfish will be very spooky for several days as they move from the deeper water up onto the shallow flats. Once they get comfortable, it’s game on! Live pilchards, pinfish or cut mullet will all work on the redfish as will any number of artificial lures. I prefer soft plastics for reds such as the Mirro-Lure Lil John or Marsh Minnow in molting color. Redfish can’t resist this little mullet

imitator early in the year. March is also a great month for early morning top water action on big speckled trout, snook and redfish. Stick with natural colors for your top water plugs this time of year and fish the mullet schools as rummaging mullet kick up a great deal of crustaceans on the flats for gamefish to forage on. As water temps near that magical 72-degree mark, the beaches will come alive with kingfish. Anchor up or slow troll areas of hard bottom or structure such as reefs and wrecks for the best results. Large threadfin herring, pilchards or even silver spoons will all produce kingfish in late March. March can be windy, so pick your offshore days wisely. The last two years, March has been very warm and very fishy with almost a late April feel. This Winter has been colder, but warming as of late. Be ready as things could bust wide open this making for a crazy month! Catch Capt. Michael Anderson every Saturday morning starting April 1st on Ch32 WMOR-TV at 6:30am for the Reel Animals TV and Saturdays for Reel Animals Saturday on 970WFLA from 6:00am to 8:00am and Sunday mornings on AM620 for the TA Mahoney Co. RECIPE OF THE MONTH CEVICHE BY: MICHELLE ATKINS

C

eviche is a South American dish that is served cold. It can be made with fish or shrimp and other seafood. It has a citrus flavor and is complimented with other flavorful ingredients. I love this dish and find the shrimp to be the best for our family.

Ingredients: • 1-pound medium-small shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 tablespoon salt (for salting the poaching water) • 3/4 cup lime juice (juice from 4-6 limes) or your choice • 3/4 cup lemon juice (juice from 2-3 lemons) • 1 cup finely chopped red onion • 1 jalapeño, ribs and seeds removed, minced (optional) • 1 cup chopped cilantro • 1 cucumber, peeled diced into small pieces • 1 avocado, peeled, seed removed, cut into small chunks

Directions: The first thing I do is bring a pot of water to a boil with salt. Add the shrimp. Only boil the shrimp for one to two minutes. Remove and place in ice. Take the juice of the lemons or limes, which ever you wish, and place into a bowl. Chop the shrimp into pieces and add to the juice. The acid will continue to cook the shrimp. Place in refrigerator for one hour. Remove shrimp from the refrigerator and cut up veggies in small pieces and add to bowl. Mix all together and serve. You can serve this as is, or with toasted Cuban bread or French bread.

SNOOK AND REDFISH ARE THE HOT BITE IN MARCH BY: CAPT. ANTHONY CORCELLA fish common. Jigs and live shrimp are your best bets. Book a trip and get in on the hot action. We can fish from one to four people on our boats and can accommodate larger groups with our team of experienced captains. The Highwater fishing lures can be bought at St. Pete Fishing Outfitters. Now, it’s time to take these tips and get out there and fish.

W

ith the relatively mild winter, snook have continued to be a go to target. The fish are feeding strong on moving tides. It’s not uncommon to catch over 30 fish in a day. They are hitting lures, live and cut bait. Lures are working well around residential docks and in potholes in the grass flats. Top choices are High Water Lures Get’em Shads on a ¼ ounce jighead or a suspended hard bait like a MirrOlure. Live greenbacks and

handpicked shrimp are working well in the same areas. Bring plenty of live chum along to fire up the snook. If you’re targeting bigger snook, try cut threadfins or ladyfish along the mangrove shorelines. Using cut bait, we’ve been averaging over 20 snook on our half-day trips. Chumming with small pieces of threadfins will get the bite going. The big redfish are starting to show up. The big schools haven’t arrived yet, but small pods are on

the prowl. Using the same bait and tactics for the snook have been working for reds up to 30 inches. For gear, try 7-foot 6-inch rods with 3000 size reels loaded with 15-pound braid. A 36-inch leader of 20 to 25-pound fluorocarbon tied to a 2/0 to 3/0 circle hook will get the job done with cut bait. Try 0/1 to 1/0 hooks if fishing live bait. The trout bite also remains strong with limits of 18 to 20-inch

What makes our charter service unique is that we cater to disabled veterans and wheel chair bound clients! Our boat is able to accommodate wheelchairs and is ADA compliant. FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT

LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO

B

ass are practically jumping in the boat! We’re seeing lots of nice bass in the 5 to 11-pound range lately. This is the time of year that you’ll find those bigger ones as shown in the photo of Tammy Rakusan who recently reeled in a 26inch 11.3-pound beauty right here in Lake Alfred on Lake Alfred. The abundance of large bass this time of year is due to their spawning season. We recently weighed in three bass over 11 pounds--one here in Lake Alfred out of Lake Rochelle. The Lake Rochelle catch was brought in on a live shiner and the other two out of Lake Alfred were snagged on a Booyah “One Knocker” in royalty color. This is the one I recommend all the time--it’s the best! Lake Alfred is not only having great bass results of up to 11 pounds, but is still seeing good results on specs. Best reporting lakes in Lake Alfred are Alfred, Rochelle, Haines, Echo and Swoope. Over in the Auburndale area, Lakes Ariana and Juliana are seeing lots of smaller bass up to four pounds. At this time, we don’t have reports

of large bass there yet. Ariana and Juliana are still experiencing great reports on specs. Juliana is also still seeing many shell crackers mixed in. Shell crackers seem to be hitting early this year Moving on to the South Winter Chain, great reports are coming in from Lakes Shipp, Cannon and Summit where we’re seeing big bag limits on bass. The recommendations are to fish the mouth of the canals. These lakes are also experiencing excellent spec fishing. Our central Florida area is just the best place to fish! Call me (or better yet come by) and I’ll point you in the right direction. Giving you the best daily first-hand information. We carry an extensive inventory and have what you need to catch those big ones. After serving our fishing community for the past 20 years, Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments have now ended. We’ll still be hosting “Special” Tournaments from time to time. Stay tuned for future developments. Our goal has always been to host bass tournaments that are honest, provide great fishing, and offer a family-friendly environment. W We will continue to do so. HERNANDO COUNTY

TIPS FOR THE NATURE COAST BY: CAPT. JOEL GANT

F

ishing the Nature Coast can be challenging. It takes time to learn an area. Knowing where to go, what to use and when to go to catch some fish. Being a Charter Captain, I get asked these questions all the time. In this article I would like to share some tips I’ve learned and use on my trips. Off Hernando Beach, the

channel can be very productive. Cobia, trout, bluefish, redfish, mackerel and many other species can be caught there. Work the rock edges and cuts. I like a jig/jerk bait or topwater bait. Then you have the marked rocks (North rock, Middle rock, South rock, Cutters and don’t forget the new reef balls). Here you can anchor and throw jigs or

shrimp on a hook. I also love to drift fish these areas. Drift fishing can be very productive and it’s easy. You can cover a lot of ground with this tactic. As long as you have some wind or current to drift, not too slow or too fast (one mph give or take). I like to use a 1/4 oz jig with either a jerkbait or a 3-inch gulp (everything eats gulps). Throw the bait as far as you can in the opposite direction your moving and let it get to the bottom and quick twitch it two or three times, then let it drop back to the bottom without reeling until you feel a hit. Always keep an eye on your fishfinder and you will pick up some new spots. Another tip for drifting is raise the outboard motor and you will drift sideways. This makes it easier for everyone to fish from the side rather than the back. As far as when to go, I like before or just after a high tide. With the rocks and shallow water at low tide, I find it much better fishing and I keep my lower unit in one piece--I’ve hit rocks way too many times. Offshore fishing has been a challenge with the cold fronts, wind

5000 Calienta St., Hernando Beach, FL 352-610-9999 www.BluePelicanMarina.com

and dirty water. For those willing to take on this challenge, there are still a lot of fish to be caught. Grey snapper, grunts, sea bass, gag grouper (can’t keep because it’s seasonal) and red grouper are still being caught regularly. Look for them at your rock piles in 20 to 60 feet. Once we start getting some steady warm weather, the Spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia and sharks will be moving into the near shore areas. Get out there on the water and make some memories with friends and family! Capt. Joel Gant operates Fishdaddy Charters out of Hernando Beach. Coast guard licensed, insured and Federal permitted. SKINNY WATER REPORT BY: DERICK BURGOS

W

ith the influx of rain and intermittent cold fronts, we decided to take a break from the usual kayak trips and bring it back to our roots with some freshwater pond hopping. We decided to conduct an experiment to see what would cause the best reaction strikes for largemouth bass during the unusually late winter pattern. One of us took a classic popper chug bug style lure and the other a Texas rigged trusty watermelon plastic creature bait. The results were quite interesting. On days where the

wind was causing ripples across the water, the bass crushed the popper without hesitation. Nothing beats watching these big largemouth get air born to attack these lures. On calmer days, the creature bait seemed to do the trick very well. We did a very slow retrieve to provoke the bass that are sitting on the bottom to strike. They tend to sit down there more often during the colder periods. This made the creature the better selection to stir up the fish’s appetite. In conclusion, just because

it’s too windy to get on a kayak or boat does not mean you can’t get outside and catch some pigs. So, turn off your TV, grab your rod and your kiddo and get out to your neighborhood pond. You won’t catch fish from your couch! Good vibes and tight lines always!

elcome back Yak fans. This month I’d like to share something I believe sums up who we are. Hope this touches you as it did me!

The Fisherman’s Candy Store Over 5,000 sq. ft. of Fishing Tackle and Supplies

In place of Father, yours might may say brother, uncle, neighbor. or even Mom. In my case it was my Grandfather. Dale Butler, my Grandfather, was a man who had worn many hats. He was a lineman who first brought phone service to rural Indiana in the 20’s. A barber, a salesman and on December 7, 1941, a John Deere dealer. But, I remember him most as the guy who in the late 50’s and 60’s, on the east coast of Florida, would take a kid fishing--that kid was me. A champion snook fisherman who, when the tides were right, would wake me with a “let’s go!” at 3am, and I was always ready. I hope this story makes you take a minute to remember that person that

shared their love of fishing with you. And remember to be that person for someone else! Feel free to share your stories with me on Facebook. CAPT. SERGIO’S CORNER BY: CAPT. SERGIO ATANES

M

arch is a great month for catching large redfish in Tampa Bay. Although redfish are year-long residents of the Bay, the large breeders prefer the mangrove shore line. March water temperatures are a welcome relief after the cold winter months and a turn on for the big bruisers.

A short trip to catch bait at my secret spot and from there it was off to Weedon Island--one of my favorite spots for large redfish this time of year. Once we reached the no motor zone, I lowered the trolling motor and with a push of a button 113 pounds of thrust came to life propelling my 25-foot Pathfinder

bay boat in the direction of Weedon Island. Many islands and keys in Tampa Bay are protected areas. One must use either a trolling motor or a push pole. Be aware and obey the rules. FWC keeps a good eye on these areas. We slowly worked our way to the southeast point of the key. Here we anchored and waited for the school to appear. Patience is important since the school can appear in a moment’s notice. We were prepared for action. One rod was rigged with live pinfish suspended just below the surface of the water using a float. A second rod was rigged with a greenback freelined just beyond our float. The third rod was rigged with a cut threadfin sardine and a piece of Fishbites Fish’n Chunk crab scent bait, just to add that extra scent. I prefer to use a small split shot to keep the cut bait on the bottom. The sun’s rays were slowly breaking into the crystal-clear water. You could see the movement of small pinfish darting in and out of the grass and mullet starting to jump. I could tell by my clients’ look they were ready for action. Just beyond our reach, we could see a small wake as if a small boat had buzzed by. We looked at each other and without a word prepared for an attack. The reds were coming. Doug drew first blood and, within a split second, mine was next. Three hook ups and no one around to see it. We had them all to ourselves for over three hours. We battled reds, winning some fights and losing others. Large schools of reds will congregate around mangrove islands. Some schools are so large they form a red wave as they push

through the shallow waters of the flats. My favorite baits for these large bruisers are 3 to 5-inch pinfish, cut fresh dead threadfin, sardines and dollar-size pass crabs. Casting distance is a must and medium tackle works best. I prefer to use 15-pound test braided line, a 7.6foot medium action fast taper rod and 3000 to 3500 reels. Reds in shallow waters will spook easily and the stealth system works best. This means keeping a safe distance from the school and being quiet. Remember, sound travels seven times faster through water and the slightest noise can break up schooling fish. I prefer to fish the start of an outgoing tide for reds; because, as the tide drops, they are forced into the cuts and potholes around the mangrove island creating a private casting pond for my clients. Get there early ahead of the tide change. I have sat and waited for an hour for fish to move in and it has been well worth it. While other boats are trying to follow the fish, let the fish come to you. Never cast into a school of fish. Always cast ahead of them and let them come toward your bait. On days with strong currents, I will use a float and let the current drift my bait towards the fish. My clients had a great day and one they will never forget. SPRING IN FLORIDA

ENJOY THE PARK, ROD & RIDE. LET’S TAKE IT OUTSIDE BY: MISTY WELLS

O

ne of the best things about living in Florida is that there is so much to do yearround. Spring is in the air. With perfect temperatures and not that many biting insects yet, it is perfect camping weather. Did you know there are 175 state parks, nine state trails and three national parks in the state of Florida? There are also six state parks where you can boat camp with boat slips, restrooms, showers, water and electricity. You can also find several places where boaters can anchor overnight and camp out. Find a park right for you and the crew and go. Want the boating lifestyle, but not the expense and headache? Check out Freedom Boat Club of Tampa Bay--I’m a member. Another thing that Florida Spring brings is tarpon season. The allusive Silver King is on the way. Once the water hits a sustained 70

degrees and the love bugs show up, it’s time to get your rods ready. There is more than one place to go for epic tarpon fishing in the state of Florida--let me name a few. Boca Grande is known for the largest concentration of tarpon in the world, but the fishing in Tampa Bay for tarpon is just as good. The entrance to Tampa Bay by the Sunshine Skyway and Egmont Pass have become a great tarpon location over the years and really produces--I have caught a few there. Want to head a little south? Islamorada and Marathon in the Florida Keys are stellar. Tarpon swarm the bridge connecting Bahia Honda Key with Summerland Key. A place that may not be front of mind for tarpon, but should be, is St. Augustine. Spawning occurs between May and September so get ready for the fight of a lifetime. Check FWC guidelines to ethically handle your tarpon. Practice catch and release and keep em wet--don’t take them out of water. Switching gears, let’s go biking. Florida offers some of the most scenic bike trails from a leisure waterside ride to something off the beaten path. One of my favorites is the Pinellas trail. It extends over 54 miles from St. Pete to Tarpon Springs and they are always adding more. Want that “Old Florida” feel?

Check out the Withlacoochee State Trail with over 46 miles of paved rail-trail--you can pedal back in time. Sanibel Island features 22 miles of paved trails that include a ride through the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge--it is a bucket list ride. You can be a serious rider or someone like me looking for trails that have some great local bars and restaurants along the way to break up the ride and grab a cold one. Spring in Florida. W

ith the weather showing signs of consistency over the past weeks, it’s really turned all species of fish back on! We still have some negative tides to come, but that’s not an issue. The gator trout are still schooled up in the deep pockets that have water in them during the lower tides. When the tide rises, they are moving around to the edges of oyster bars and are mixed in with the mullet. The bait of choice this time of year for these big trout is smaller pinfish under a bobber or a free lined shrimp. Use 20-pound line to help get a couple extra bites. Redfish are beginning to school up in great numbers. This time of year is a great time to go chase after those tailing redfish everyone talks about. Find an open flat and stalk it with ease. Keep your eyes open for the redfish schools to tail in groups of

three to six, depending on how thick you’re in them. Make sure you are very quiet as these fish will spook very easily. Tail hook a shrimp on a 2/0 circle hook and make sure you make long casts to prevent scaring them. It’s best to chase these fish at the lowest of the tide, so they are flushed out from the mangroves and easier to spot. Snook have been showing up in great numbers recently which is always a plus! Tons of the lower 20’s sized snook have been caught in their normal spring spots already. Find a trough along a mangrove line with a little water movement and you should have no problem catching one. The bait of choice is, once again, shrimp. Use a select shrimp freelined and let the current take it down the mangrove line. ST. PETE REPORT BY: CAPT. CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR

F

ebruary was a total knockout! The redfish bite was an inferno that stretched from the Howard Franklin Bridge to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and even further south around Fort Desoto State Park. Tides, wind, and water clarity are some of the things to bring into perspective when in search of these fish. Unexpected cold fronts that bring a whirlwind of fury to most guides in the Tampa Bay area will set the most experienced angler back to the basics of fishing. However, if the conditions are right, there are plenty of fish to wrangle up. March is well known for its cooperative weather and great fishing. The redfish bite is predicted to remain steady through the month of March. When it comes to non-stop drag screaming, rod bending

action that leaves you with a sore forearm, snook is the second fish for the month. The snook spawn historically starts before or after the full moon in May and peaks in the month of June. March and April are the two months when the stove heats the pot as the water temperatures hit the mid 70’s. Go to spots for snook are all major passes and bodies of water surrounded by sandbars or some type of structure that has the potential for holding baitfish during tidal changes. The most common fish to catch are the smaller males. However, there are plenty of big female snook to be hooked. March is definitely a great month for all day snook fishing due to the forefront of their spawn and water temperatures reaching the mid 70’s. This allows for great feeding activity because they will become lethargic as water temperatures rise closer to mid-summer. Choice baits for redfish this month are pinfish--live or cut. For snook, I recommend live scaled sardines or dead scaled sardines cut in half. Free-lined baits (or with the necessary split shot for stronger tidal flow) are the preferred presentation for both targeted species. OLD SALT 26TH ANNUAL SPRING KING OF THE BEACH TOURNAMENT & FESTIVAL MAY 2-4, 2019

H

ave you ever tournament fished? If you have, then you know what the “King of the Beach” is and if you haven’t, and always wanted to, it is the best tournament in town. This spring we are celebrating our 26th Annual and we are keeping it exciting with a more ways to win and adding a Kids Sea Wall Tournament on Friday night. There are 3 main reasons to fish the King… • LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: The Old Salts have made the competition one of the most fair to ALL levels of fisherman. They implement a 30-mile boundary to ensure any size boat can compete. They also offer extra places to single engine vessels. There are also no intimidating check outs or shotgun starts. • OVER 60 PLACES TO WIN: The tournament has 6 divisions; Overall, Single Engine, Spanish Mackerel, Traveling Angler, Ladies and Youth. Each division has cash and/or prizes with approximately $200,000 up for grabs. • LOW ENTRY FEES: You can enter the tournament for as little as $225 which is almost half the cost of most Kingfish tournaments. So, the risk is smaller and at the same time the rewards are bigger. First place overall wins $60,000 guaranteed. The event is so much more than just fishing. It is a 3-day festival with all types of marine related art & craft vendors and a food festival with local flavor. Friday night is Community Night with a free Kids Fishing Slam and live

music. “Combining a community food festival and live music into our tournament seamed natural to us. Fishing is part of our community, so we welcome all to join us,” says Old Salt President Tom Verdensky. The event will be held at the Madeira Beach Recreation Complex at 200 Rex Place, Madeira Beach. We have ample FREE parking and a FREE Water Ferry shuttle to the event, with a special thanks to Hubbard’s Marina. FISHING TOPWATER LURES BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE

E

arly mornings, light wind and a mirror ripple on the water are outstanding times to fish topwater lures--especially for snook, redfish and trout. Anglers, especially throughout Florida, seem addicted to MirrOLure. Located in Largo Florida, this lure manufacturing company has committed to the highest quality since their beginning. They continually improve and create stateof-the-art fishing lures, resulting in millions of fish caught in both fresh and saltwater. From topwater prop baits and surface walkers to new slow sinking C-Eye Skin Series and diving lures to soft plastic’s, MirrOlure is the favorite of everyone. One of my favorite topwater techniques and lures is a MirrOlure Top Dog Jr. over a shallow broken bottom grass flat. Here are a few tips on setting the hook when using topwater lures or hooks in general. Snook are much like freshwater bass. They

both strike suddenly with an open mouth sucking strike. The key to setting the hook is waiting until you feel the fish before you ever begin your hookset. If you try to set the hook prematurely, you’ll pull the bait or lure out of the fish’s open mouth. On the other hand, when a redfish strikes a topwater lure, they do it with a swirling open mouth sucking motion. Since they normally feed facing down, they’re forced to get their mouth up on top of the lure. This often pushes it forward ahead of the fish. This means they occasionally miss on the first attempt-particularly in shallow water. So, if you’re “walking the dog,” slow it down, but do not stop it. Stopping during the attack usually causes the redfish to lose interest and turn away. Do not set the hook prematurely. Wait until you feel the fish before setting the hook. Here’s a little something about hook setting. We’ve watched TV bass professionals wrench back on their rods to set the hook. However, today with many anglers switching to braided line, these aggressive snatch back and set the hook techniques are completely unnecessary. Braided line has no stretch and no memor-just getting the slack out of your line usually forces the hook to set itself. Remember, that

the braided fishing lines have no stretch, so you feel everything. All you have to do it keep a taut line and the hook does the rest. One final point on hook setting involves circle hooks that have been around for centuries. Over the last 10 to 20 years, with a move toward environmentally friendly, circle hooks have increased in popularity with recreational anglers and have become mandatory when targeting certain reef species. They have proved to be an almost foolproof way of catching fish while producing the least amount of damage. Hook sets normally occur in the outer edge of the fish’s mouth. Seldom, if ever, are they throat or gut hooked. If you try setting a circle hook yourself, before you feel the fish pulling, guess what? The fish wins. “Give Me a Call & Let’s Go Fishing” Captain Woody Gore is the area’s top outdoor fishing guide. A BREED OF THEIR OWN BY: PAUL PRESSON

A

s they pull up to the beach in an old, beat up pickup truck, it is hard not to notice the bed overflowing with fishing gear. As the truck sputters to a stop, people jump out and immediately go into action. Methodically, the truck is unloaded. It is easy to tell that this is not their first rodeo. A cart modified for their purpose is loaded to the gills. A kayak on two dollies is so full, it flexes in the middle. One would think that just getting to the water’s edge with all this equipment would be pushing the envelope. This is not the case. In the dead of night, the journey is just beginning. Pushing and pulling all of this gear in the wet sand is no easy task. But, there is a distance to go before they get to the spot. As the second round of unloading begins, the heat and bugs are already taking their toll. Using nothing but headlamps to cut through the darkness, a canopy is raised and a makeshift camp begins to take form. Each individual has their own tasks to make this endeavor possible. This is the beginning of a long evening with team LowTide, a shark fishing crew that is serious business. Hammering can be heard as team members pound PVC rod holders deep in the sand. It is easy to tell that this process has been done countless times before. The PVC holders are placed at equal intervals down the beach. As the rods are being secured in the receptacles, it is impossible not to be impressed by the size of the behemoth reels. Most people would be completely exhausted at this point. This is just the beginning for this hard-core team. Stingrays are pulled out of large, sealed plastic bags and sliced down the wings. Enormous hooks impale these baits in a precise manner. To cast these rods is not feasible.

This is when the kayaks play an important role. A team member dawns a life jacket and does one last radio check. The bait, attached to the line and a strobe light, is placed into the kayak. The team member is pushed from shore and paddles into the waves and disappears into the night. As he paddles through the strong currents for hundreds of yards, the support team directs him. When he has reached the predetermined fishing area, he is radioed to drop his bait. This procedure is done again and again and is determined by how many rod and reels will be used that night. When all the equipment is at the ready, glow sticks are attached to the fishing line close to the tip of the rods. If for some reason the sound of reels screaming after a bite is not noticed, the movement of the glow stick is a visual cue. A fighting belt is centrally located so that it can be used to battle larger sharks. Now the waiting begins. Occasionally, sharks will mouth the bait and the clicks from the reels can be heard. When the bait is taken, patience is the key. Experienced shark anglers know just how long to wait and with a mighty pull, the hook is set. Now the real work begins. With adrenaline flowing, the fight is on. Just because these creatures are hooked, certainly does not mean that they will be landed. A shark can shake the hook or cut the line. When a shark is caught, the team jumps into action securing the shark for measurements, photos and tagging. This is all done as quickly as possible to ensure a safe release. This is a way of life for team LowTide. They compete with teams throughout the world, traveling the Southeastern United States seeking trophy fish. The team is very conscious of the conservation

and preservation of these mighty creatures. They work hand-inhand with wildlife officials and marine biologists reporting species locations and trends. Sponsorship is imperative for this type of fishing, the cost of equipment, upkeep and travel is staggering. Shark fishing is certainly not for everyone. To endure the physical and mental obstacles of this type of fishing, one must have a true passion for it. The crew of team LowTide is certainly a breed of their own! I would like to thank Team

LowTide, (based out of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties), Lane Carter, Chance Martin, Clayton Watts, Christopher Leigh and XtremeBraid. Paul Presson, outdoor writer and published cartoonist. He has fished the coastlines of Tampa Bay for 28 years, land based, wade, kayak and by flats boat. If he is not writing, he is out on the water!

THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM OPENS $4 MILLION SEA TURTLE REHABILITATION CENTER CARE CENTER HAS ONE OF THE STATE’S DEEPEST TURTLE-EXCLUSIVE DIVE POOLS

T

ampa, FL – The Florida Aquarium officially opened its $4.1 million Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Apollo Beach today. The two story, 19,000-square-foot center features five different rehabilitation pools including one of the state’s deepest turtle-exclusive dive pool with observation window. “We rescue sea turtles from around Florida and beyond, but during winter months, there is a growing need for more animal care facilities to rehabilitate cold stunned sea turtles,” said The Florida Aquarium President and

CEO Roger Germann. “This center is opening at the right time, and The Florida Aquarium will be able to dramatically increase the number of sea turtles it cares for during the year.” The pools at the new care center range in size from 1,500 to 25,000-gallons. The sea turtle dive pool, which reaches a depth of 11-feet, will be used to assess buoyancy issues, swim conditioning and food trials before turtles are cleared by FWC to be returned back into the wild. The center also includes a state-of-the-art sea turtle surgery

suite. “We believe we have a responsibility to be good stewards of our environment and the animals that depend on it, and this investment will only help us further our mission of protecting and restoring our fragile Blue Planet,” Germann added. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center was made possible through a unique publicprivate partnership consisting of groups who all shared the same common goal of working to achieve and maintain healthy sea turtle populations. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), contributed $3 million, The Spurlino Foundation and others donated $690,000, The Florida Aquarium contributed more than $400,000 and TECO Energy helped make the center a reality through a generous land use agreement. “We are grateful to continue to expand our partnership with such a world class facility like The Florida Aquarium,” said FWC Executive Director Eric Sutton. “We look forward to further work together on sea turtle conservation, coral research and more.” The Florida Aquarium’s Animal Response Team, that manages sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release efforts, has recently been expanded, thanks to a $250,000 grant from Florida Blue. Since opening its door, The Florida Aquarium has helped

rescue and rehab more than 150 threatened or endangered turtles. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center will only ensure that number grows.

DID YOU KNOW: • Roughly 90% of all sea turtle nesting in the United States takes place on Florida’s beaches. • There are seven different species of sea turtles including Flatback, Green, Hawksbill, Kemp’s Ridley, Leatherback, Loggerhead and Olive Ridley. • Of the six sea turtle species found in U.S. waters or that nest on U.S. Beaches, all are designated as either threatened or endangered. • Some sea turtles can live up to 50-years or longer. • Leatherback sea turtles can travel more than 10,000 miles every year. • Green sea turtles can stay underwater for up to five hours.

About The Florida Aquarium The Florida Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution whose mission is to entertain, educate and inspire stewardship about our natural environment. It has been voted a Top 3 Aquarium in North America by the readers of USA Today (May 2018), it’s earned a Trip Advisor Hall of Fame Rating (2018). The Florida Aquarium has also earned a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator and been awarded a platinum rating from GuideStar.

Destination Fishing! By Tom Schlichter

St. Augustine’s Shallow Water Reds And Trout

Capt. Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures prepares to release a typical St. Augustine redfish taken from shallow waters on a quiet soft plastic. Photo courtesy of Capt. Tommy Darrenger.

W

ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). For overnight accommodations, The Inn at Comanche Harbor (904-825-0003; www. camacheeinn.com) is right next door to Comanche Cove Yacht Harbor (904-829-5676; www.comancheisland.com) where transient slips are generally available.

CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND

MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton

T

he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.

Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. This report barely scratches the surface of the blistering-hot action in Nosara. Remember, you can always check the FishingNosara Blog for daily catch updates. If you have been reading this report for a while and waiting for the right time to visit, stop wishing and come fishing! Call FishingNosara at 904-591-2161 or email craig@ fishingnosara.com.

ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. IS THERE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE?

ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. The number of lionfish you noted with ulcers 3. A photograph of what you saw, if possible

ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter

I

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. Pallot’s unparalleled passion for fishing has paved the way for his successful career and has inspired fishing enthusiasts worldwide. He is widely recognized for Walker’s Cay Chronicles, which aired for 16 seasons on ESPN, a TBS series titled Saltwater Angler and his most recent Fishing the Keys show on VERSUS network. Each show is centered around Pallot’s fishing insight as he travels around the world on angling adventures. “I smile, knowing that most of my life is spent in a glow of solar energy reflected by the world’s most beautiful wet spots,” said Pallot. “Montana meadow stream or shimmering, tropical bonefish flat, I’m stacking sun drenched miles on my Fish Hippie wardrobe. I’m enjoying the function of the product along with the fashion attention when I return to the dock!” In spring 2017, Fish Hippie launched the Solarhaze Performance Collection, which has become a fast favorite among outdoor and fishing enthusiasts nationwide, including Pallot. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Sheri Daye

s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.

News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic

T

he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of

the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.

Baja’s Inshore Action

On The East Cape

By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.

J

ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
