t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

GOLDEN CRAPPIE CAUGHT IN ARKANSAS

avid Allen Sisson, of Magnolia, Arkansas, caught a fish on July 27 that few anglers have ever seen or even heard of: a golden crappie. Sisson was vertical jigging a brushpile at the 3,000-acre Columbia County, Ark. water supply reservoir when he caught the unusual fish. “The pictures still don’t do it justice,” Sisson said. “It was amazing, and I just feel blessed to have caught it.” Arkansas Game and Fish Commission District Fisheries Supervisor and avid crappie angler Andy Yung also was excited to hear about the catch. “I had never seen a golden crappie in my life,” Yung said. “I’ve read about them, but it’s something you just never see in the wild.” Yung explained the gold coloration is caused by a genetic mutation called Xanthism, similar to what causes a rare animal to be an albino or the black pigmentation in some extremely rare cases of deer and other animals. Xanthic crappie not only are lottery-drawing rare, but their coloring can hinder their ability to survive. These sorts of animals usually stand out from the others and are typically eaten by predators long before they reach maturity. Sisson said his golden catch didn’t end up in a frying pan, but has been taken to a taxidermist in Magnolia to mount.

his summer has definitely been a hot one, and the Dog Days are just beginning. Our purpose is to provide a strong voice in all matters relating to saltwater fishing. This is your opportunity to engage with your state representatives on important matters such as menhaden, a critical forage fish. Some legislators want to better regulate this industry while others support the status quo. • The reduction industry harvest in the bay is down over 50% in the past decade (Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission -ASMFC data); Omega Protein has stated “there is no scientific evidence of menhaden depletion in the bay.” • Many Chesapeake Bay anglers have observed a decline first hand. • Menhaden are valuable filter feeders and help clean the bay waters. • Many fish rely on menhaden for forage, especially striped bass which are also in decline and new restrictions are coming soon; a recent study concluded that striped bass have been reduced by 28% coast-wide as a result of the reduction industry. The striped bass fishery contributes over $100 million a year to Virginia’s economy. • Menhaden are the only fish managed by the Virginia General Assembly rather than the professional fisheries managers at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC). Menhaden bills are introduced every year in the Virginia General Assembly but fail to get out of Senate or House Committees. WHAT CAN YOU DO? eptember is a great time to fish here on the Outer Banks. Surf and pier fishing will offer the angler a chance for red drum, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, sea mullet, spot and speckled trout. Those fishermen may also be some of the first to start landing red drum in the 40 to 50-inch ranges. However, Mother Nature will be the main factor on what species will be biting throughout the month. Those fishing near and offshore may also have great days on the water if the weather cooperates. It is not unheard of for the white marlin bite to stay hot into late September, as well as, good catches of yellowfin tuna and dolphin. If bottom fishing is more to your liking, then a trip out of Hatteras with a charter captain that specializes in this type of fishing will give you a great day on the water. Also surf fishing on Hatteras Island this time of the year is really nice because the crowds on the beaches start to decline during the post Labor Day holiday. If you are headed down to Hatteras to fish on the surf, make sure you purchase or renew your Cape Hatteras National Seashore Off Road Vehicle Permit. You can buy an annual or 10-day permit. Check out the NPS website and you can see all of the ramps that are open and how to purchase a permit online. The web address is https://www.recreation.gov/vehiclepermits. There are also a couple of Hatteras Village events you may want to know about if you are headed to Hatteras Island this month. The first event is the Hatteras Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament, which is September 5 thru 7, 2019. Also, in September, Hatteras Village Day at the Docks will be held September 13 and 14, 2019. This event is held on the docks at Hatteras Harbor, Odens’s Dock, Village Marina and the Albatross Fleet Dock. This event offers something for everyone in your family with all kinds of events planned. While you are there, you can see the oldest fishing fleet in the Outer Banks, The Albatross Fleet, and get the chance to meet the owner, Captain Ernie Foster. If you are in the area, make sure you attend this great event that celebrates the tradition of fishing watermen of Hatteras Village. There is also a kayak fishing tournament in Nags Head September 13th and 14th. Shane aboard The Share Cropper for a 4-hour fishing charter along the jetty in Galveston Bay. After a short ride out, racing a cruise ship along the way, we anchored down and began catching some fish. I pulled up the first fish, a catfish....who would’ve thought catching a catfish in Galveston Bay. Using live shrimp and live bait fish we landed some sheep head, round head, sea trout and some keeper red fish. Capt. Shane and his first mate Kade keep us baited up, netted up, helped with a snag or two and kept us on fish most of the 3 hours fishing. All in all, a good day fishing! If you are ever in Galveston and want to do some fishing, hook up with Capt. Shane and First Mate Kade. Let’s dodge some storms, stay safe, and catch some fish! One eye on the weather channel and another on the fishing reports. September is a great month to fish the Outer Banks. Big Spanish mackerel have been crashing small casting spoons in the mornings and evenings. It’s been a good sign of them this year. Blues and false albacore will be mixed in as well under the birds. Mahi can come closer to shore and love a squid strip or small ballyhoo. Drum will be out patrolling in large schools. Cobia will still be a very viable option! Way out there in the blue yonder white marlin will be on the offshore fleets minds. Of course there will be plenty of meat fish as well. Yellowfin and wahoo always put up a heck of a fight and are great table fare. Big hurricane swell showing up making the inlet unsafe to pass no worries go speckled trout fishing. It has been one of the best trout years that come to memory! Calm waters and light tackle action never get many complaints. Fish are being landed on jigs and live bait. CATCHIN’ AND COOKIN’ DOES RIBBONFISH TASTE BETTER THAN FLOUNDER? by Jim Baugh reporting from Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, Cape Charles VA WOW! Spring and summer 2019 has simply been excellent fishing and Jim Baugh Outdoors TV this year has produced some of our best shows ever. After many years we finally got the dream Black Drum show we always wanted, killer Sea Bass and also a huge boat load of spadefish. Many charter captains I regularly talk to have boasted what a great year they have been having and many anglers have been enjoying this years awesome Cobia bite. The offshore bite at times has been red hot and we are even seeing anglers target species that previously have never really been fished. With fishing this good I can only wonder how well the Fall fishery will pan out. Hoping for the best. As much as I love catching fish, I get even a bigger kick out of watching other people enjoy the tug on the line. One fish that has been poping up a lot all over the internet is the now prized ribbon fish. Now this was a surprise to me and for what ever reason, had never paid attention to them and never really heard of anyone going after them. Well, that has all changed now during the summer of 2019. Many anglers are now targeting these fish and turns out that they are very good dinner fare… so I have heard. One of the captains we have featured on JBOTV is an enthusiastic fellow named Billy Pappas Jr and Captain Billy has really been reelin in the Ribbons!

Turns out he also has some good recipes that I am anxious to try. I ask the good captain about basic prep and he did say that you leave the skin on, it helps hold the filet together. Like most fish, a good pan sear in olive oil and butter with some stuffed crab meat is always a winner. In the past we have usually caught Ribbons while bottom fishing for Spot and Croaker. However, the size Ribbons we would catch are nothing like the huge ones that Captain Billy has been catching. He would not divulge his secret, but what ever it is they are putting some huge Ribbon fish in the boat. You can go catch some of the fish with Captain Billy out of Virginia Beach, his charter is called Playin Hookey Charters 757-619-3530. Great boat and crew. It would be a good idea to book your ribbon trip early in September while the big ones are still here. Speaking of seafood, plan a trip to the Eastern Shore and stop by the Oyster Farm. leave the skin on! Cut the filets into about 6 to 8 inch long filets and roll then up. Stuff the top of the roll with fresh backfin crabmeat seasoned the way you like. Bake at 380 for 12 minutes. Then put on top rack and broil for about a minute with some light stuffing or crumbled saltine crackers and some melted butter. Broil for only about a minute. That is it! AREA ANGLER CLUBS The Great Bridge Fisherman’s Association is a family-oriented fishing club located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake, Virginia. Our charter is to introduce new anglers to the sport of recreational fishing while promoting the conservation of our resources. The diversity of its membership covers all aspects of recreational fishing from freshwater to saltwater, surf to pier, and inshore to offshore fishing. The club is active in the community, sponsoring various events including Wish a Fish, an Annual Scholarship to high school seniors pursuing higher education and inshore party boat fishing for both our senior and disabled residents. Our Tournament Director also ensures that the membership sponsors and participates in various inter and intra club tournaments throughout the year. Some of our annual activities include a banquet, lead pouring, oyster roast and fishing flea market. Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is always a guest speaker talking on a wide range of topics and there are plenty of door prizes, raffles and snacks to round off the night. The Tidewater Anglers Club (TAC) was founded in February of 1941 at a meeting at the Monticello Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. The objectives of the TAC were the same then as they are today—to promote legislation and fishing practices that effectively provide protection of the environment and our resources. TAC is an organization that influences the customs and practices for the conservation and propagation of fish and kindred creatures. The TAC organization is committed to the promotion of true sportsmanship among all fishermen along with providing entertainment and education for its members. The club has grown into a truly multi-disciplined angling organization with almost equal individual and family memberships. Each year there are 11 monthly membership meetings and an Annual Awards Banquet. There are also club activities such as tournaments, family fishing days, a fish fry and other events which allow members to gather for fun and fellowship. OUTBOARD FLUSHING THE RIGHT WAY It sounds simple, but there is a right and a wrong way to perform this essential task. In our coastal area waters, flushing your outboard after use in salt or brackish water should be an everyday part of your boating routine. WHY FLUSH? Salt and brackish water is a corrosive killer of the aluminum from which outboards are made, so flushing every time after salt water use is a must. Left unchecked inside the cooling passages, salt water will quickly build up and may cause cooling blockages, leading to overheating and over time can corrode an engine from the inside out. Operating an engine in sandy, silty, or muddy water also dictates the need for periodic flushing. All of the outboard manufacturers recommend flushing an outboard (according to the procedures outlined in the engine owner’s manual) after every use in salt, brackish, dirty or polluted waters. This reads pretty much the same way in the “Maintenance” and “Engine Flushing” sections of all owner’s manuals from BRP/Evinrude, Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu, and Yamaha. THE OLD SCHOOL WAY Flush muffs are the most common way to flush an outboard; they’re available at most marine stores and online resellers, they’re inexpensive, and easy to use. Connect to a garden hose, fit the muffs over the engine’s water intakes on the sides of the gearcase, turn the water on, start the engine, and let it run. That’s it…with the following precautions: • If your engine has additional water intakes that are not being directly fed water via the flushing muffs, they must be sealed off with a bit of duct tape or overheating may occur. • If your engine doesn’t have water intakes on the sides of the gearcase, you will need a special type of flushing attachment that covers the front of the gearcase. These can be purchased from aftermarket shops (www. bobsmachine.com). • When attaching the muffs, be sure they cover the water inlets completely, and don’t pop or slide off when the water is turned on. • Be vigilant, and do not leave the engine while flushing. Watch the engine’s “tell-tale” overboard water indicator to ensure that the engine is pumping water. • The engine should be kept in neutral and not run above a fast idle speed (1000 rpm maximum). BUILT-IN-FLUSHING ATTACHMENTS Built-in garden hose attachments are a standard part of many outboards manufactured in the past decade or so. These attachments make flushing easier, because the engine usually does not need to be running (and in some cases, should not be) to accomplish the flushing procedure. Simply check to see if your engine has this attachment (look in the owner’s manual), find the connection point, hook up a garden hose, turn on the water, and let it flow for 10 minutes. This is handy if you can’t start the engine (dead battery, for example) or if your neighbors would balk at your engine’s noise.

FLUSHING BAGS Flushing bags are soft-sided heavy plastic/vinyl bags with a support framework, designed to be fitted up and around the lower end of an engine and fully enclose it. A garden hose is attached to fill it and keep water circulating; the engine is then started and run much the same as with a flush muff attachment. Flush bags allow for engine-on flushing without the loud noise of the engine’s open exhaust. Online, google “outboard flushing bag,” and several options pop up. As with other flushing devices, caution must be exercised: • The bag must fit snugly around the engine’s midsection, and be tall enough to reach well above the water intakes. • The propeller should be removed before installing the bag. • As with a flush muff attachment, engine speed should be kept to a fast idle, no more than 1000 rpm. The engine should be kept in neutral. MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS Most outboard manufacturers’ flushing recommendations are similar. All of them make a statement about ensuring that all water is drained from the engine after flushing. This is especially important in freezing climates, so that there is no water left inside the engine which could then freeze, and cause damage. CONCLUSIONS This writer’s recommendation for flushing may be oldschool, but sometimes the old ways are the best ways. After conferring with several highly trained and experienced outboard technicians (with a combined experience level of more than 150 years), my recommendation is to use a method that allows starting and running the engine for at least 5 minutes, especially for engines run in salt water. Why? Because a warm engine with warm water running through it will work better dissolving salt and other deposits in the engine than a cold engine with cold water will, and the only way to get warm water coursing through the engine’s cooling passages is to run it and allow it to reach operating temperature. While cold-water flushing with the engine off is better than not flushing it at all, a warm water, engine-running flush is the best method available and should be employed when possible. In addition, a bag or container is not the best method to do this — flush muffs, carefully installed and monitored, is the best way. The bag/container method will keep the exhaust quiet, but it allows for circulation of salt and fresh water combined (i.e. what was in the engine and what is then in the bag via the hose). This is not the same as fresh water entering the engine from a hose. Also, the bag/container must be refreshed with input from a hose and also very carefully monitored, because the water will not only splash out thereby reducing the available cooling volume, but also will become heated as it is recirculated. STRIPERS IN THE RIP By Mike Buss

he fall striper season is almost here so let’s talk about one of my favorite places to fish for them, rips. They love to hang out around rips for a number of reasons, but probably the biggest reason is that most rips serve as a food conveyor belt bringing all types of bait to them as they lay in wait. A rip forms whenever there is current passing over a bottom of changing depth. Rips can be created by ledges, reefs, boulders, shoals, bars, and wrecks, anything that will disrupt the flow over the bottom and result in an increase in the current. This increased current forms a line of disturbed water at the surface called a rip line. It also sweeps baitfish and other prey that are unable to cope with the fast water making them easy pickings for the stripers. As the current flows over the shoal, wreck, reef or whatever, it creates a pocket of calm water on the downstream side of the structure. A perfect place for stripers to conserve energy and wait for a meal to come to them. When they see bait passing by, they move into the current and grab it, returning to the calm pocket to digest it. They are reluctant to move far to chase a meal and that can cause a problem for fly fishermen. During the day and if the current is strong, it will be difficult to get our fly down to the fish, but there are times when they will feed closer to the surface, like first light and dusk during moderate currents. Overcast days and night will also bring them up a little closer to the surface. Stripers like to feed in current, but during peak current during the middle three hours of a tide cycle, they often will hold close to the bottom and not be feeding. They also go into a shell during slack tide. Because of all of this, the best time to fish for them in a rip is during the first or last couple of hours of the tide and when that lines up with first light or dusk, it can be very good. Rip fishing from a boat is usually a two-man operation with one on the helm and the other in the front of the boat ready for a cast. It’s best to approach the rip from the up current side at an angle turning into the current and holding while the partner in front should make a cast toward the rip and let the fly be swept down current to where the stripers will be holding. You often don’t need to give much action to the fly, just let it drift along the current. Keep your fly rod tip pointed to the fly as it moves along and be ready to make a strip strike any time you feel something unusual. Experiment with different flies and retrieves until you find one that works. Because of the strong current your tackle should be a little heavier. I like to use a 10-weight balanced system so I can cast the heavy flies and sinking lines required to get down to the fish. The bigger fish often hold below the smaller ones picking off bait that is injured and dropping down to them. You need to get your fly through these smaller fish to get a trophy. Rips usually stand out so they are not difficult to find and will be the same at the same part of the tide, so it is a good idea to keep a good logbook so if you have success you can return again at the same portion of the tide. If you catch a real trophy, it is probably a female and next spring will be loaded with eggs. Treat her well, take a picture and release her to spawn.

KAYAK FISHING

Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel (CBBT) also know as one of the largest man made artificial reefs in the country. Kayak Kevin made this place famous after catching large spade, Sheepshead and citation size Red drum in his videos pioneering kayak fishing. Now it is a hotspot for kayak fisherman. Most people put in at the base of the bridge at chicks beach and paddle towards the first island fishing piling to piling along the way. I haven’t fished here in a couple of years. For one it’s a very long paddle and the current here is very unforgiving. It can be downright dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. I got the call from my salt water fishing buddy Jimmy Tran. Hey conditions are perfect lets go. I met him at the Bridge right at sunset and we were off, and sure enough once we got out there the current was ripping and had to fight an outgoing current for about two hours before it finally started to slow down. I had been fishing with clams hoping for a decent spade. Nothing but little bait snatchers out here. Jimmy caught a 10lb sheepshead and I immediately switched over to some sand fleas I had brought up from the outer banks. I watched as Jimmy reeled in yet another large fish and add to his stringer. It was my turn. For about an hour I didn’t catch anything and decided to switch to the north bridge. I hooked up with one and made sure I stayed away from the razor sharp pilings. I just knew it was a 10 lb fish but was shy by a half a pound. Two piling down I hooked up again hauling in a 13 and a half pound fish. I got my citation after all and then some. As we kicked our Hobies back to the beach we talked about how good these fish were gonna taste and thinking to ourselves, It just cant get any better than this.

Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations

n my previous article, I talked about the Ash Wednesday Storm in March of 1962. We were so blessed to still have a home, as so many others lost everything. While I can’t say that things went back to normal, slowly we got basic services back and were able to come back to our cottage and spend the night. Gradually, the area looked less and less like a war zone. I say that, advisedly, as there were actual National Guard troops that patrolled, looking for looters. As a child, I was amazed at the power that Mother Nature had exhibited. Eventually, the neighbors that could, were able to repair their homes and there more lights on our lane. I was comforted by the return of streetlights and lights in windows. At some point, we got a visit from a realtor, named Mrs. Janey. She was a very pleasant woman and she wanted to check on us. She had been the realtor for the purchase of our little asbestos cottage with the pink tile. She said that she knew of a property with multiple lots and a house on the Bay. She said that the owners were anxious to sell, and she thought of us. This intrigued my Father, as he wanted a better view, and this could be the new home of our practically professional seafood harvesting operation. We had the aluminum boat, a garvey, multiple fishing poles and three inner tubes with bushel baskets in our inventory. What a great opportunity to have our own beach. Mrs. Janey said that she could arrange a private showing. One Saturday, we piled into our car and headed for this coastal Shangri-La. I would point out that my Father offered to drive, as he was concerned about Mrs. Janey’s ability to drive. I had noticed that she wore very thick glasses that made her eyes look more like a Blue Fin Tuna, than a human. The first warning shot was when she said that we needed to look past the disrepair and concentrate on the view. She pointed out that the home had survived the Ash Wednesday Storm, without any major damage. So, we made a right turn onto a sand driveway. This was the second warning shot, as some of the water filled holes were deep enough to swallow a VW. Down the lane we traveled, swerving to avoid the sink holes and there it was – The Red Ruin. Red paint was peeling off and there were multiple holes, where the local birds had created an aviary condo complex. Fortunately, Pop took some deep breaths and chose not to go to prison for strangling Mrs. Janey. Mrs. Janey, in true realtor form, kept repeating that this was such an opportunity. Mom, sensing Pop’s anger, said that we should just look, out of respect to Mrs. Janey’s 80 or 90 years of real estate experience. Pop, weighing continued marital bliss and the prospect of having to cook for himself, opened the door. Off we marched to look at the Bay, while our tour guide prayed that we didn’t look at the looming structure. She took us down to the beach to soften the impact of the nightmare that was the house. Pop almost immediately saw the potential of launching our fleet from our own beach. Garveys, aluminum boats, and the newest member of our fleet, the Snark. The Snark was a Styrofoam sailboat, about 10 feet long, and offered the opportunity to learn to sail for us “stink pot” mariners. It had a sail, centerboard and a rudder and that was about it. It was a fun little craft, that looked more like a white bathtub, rather than an actual sailboat.

Pop explained the principles of wind and sail and then proceeded to demonstrate. Unfortunately, this required him to recline in the bottom of the boat and handle both sail and rudder above him. I watched and learned as he sailed off into the Bay. It was like a stealthy, ghost ship, as you could barely see Pop lying in the bottom of the boat. He managed to bring the boat back to shore, without incident and with a great smile. I digress. Having used all the words that she had to describe the merits of Bayfront living, Mrs. Janey now led us back to the Bates Hotel. On the back deck were the owners of the property. An elderly couple, who were able to find two spots on the deck, that would not collapse under the weight of twenty pounds. The husband said, “I wonder what the poor people are doing, today?” Now I was about 13 at this point and I can remember thinking that this was a strange comment, based upon the wreck of a house this was. Into the house, we marched. It was a dark cathedral with a great view. The centerpiece of the room was a grand piano. However, it had been used as a storage top for the wife’s paints and the husband’s books. I doubt it had been played in years. Walking around the inside was a chore, as there was stuff, everywhere. The final straw was the garbage that had been stacked in the kitchen. The smell was overwhelming. Out of the house, we marched. Pop was quiet on the trip back. I wasn’t sure if he was contemplating where he was going to hide Mrs. Janey’s body, or he was mesmerized by the waterfront. Turns out, it was the latter and he would not face jail time, just the headache of the money pit. Soon, the fleet was transferred to our new “home” and we began the process of reclaiming the house from the racoons and birds. The back porch was used to store the aluminum boat, as this was the only use that would not cause bodily injury. We settled in for a long winter of DIY adventures. I have included a photo of the front of the Red Ruin and the back, showing the aluminum boat resting on the back porch. It was, in fact, the only thing that could rest on the back porch. So many memories, so little time.

TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO FALL BASS FISHING

here I grew up, fishing is a lifestyle. I would fish Southern farm ponds and creeks day-in and day-out every summer, no matter the weather conditions. As I began to get a little older and experienced, I realized that fishing for a big bass as summer comes to a close was a little different than fishing in the cooler temperatures of fall. There’s lots of variables that come into play when figuring out how to catch fish during this time of year. A lot of your success can depend on what type of water you’re fishing. Typically, fish tend to go to deeper depths of water in the summertime. Bass want to stay cool, and the deeper water offers less light penetration. During these months, bass will actually begin to school up on offshore ledges, and if you find one of these schools, you’ll likely have a successful day out on the water. Finding where the fish are located is only half the battle; knowing what baits to throw is also vital. For me, I have more success during the summer with slower presentations like Texas-rigs, football jigs, ned rigs and drop-shot rigs. Once things start to cool off, the fish do the total opposite when it comes to where they can be found. Instead of the fish schooling together, they tend to be spread out throughout a certain area, making the bite more random at times. A lot of the shad that also call these creeks and lakes home seek more shallow water, and the bass often follow them. In the part of the country where I’m from, I notice this transition during September and October when it starts to get a lot cooler out. The baits I throw in the fall also vary from those baits of the summertime. Buzzbaits, topwater walkin’ baits and others that can cover a lot of water are what I usually get bites with. Whether you’re just getting into bass fishing or are an experienced angler, knowing how the fish behave during certain times of year is essential for your success, and it’s not something everyone always thinks about. HYBRID STRIPERS STOCKED IN N.C.’S HYCO LAKE

he N.C. Wildlife Resources C om m i s s i on is offering anglers a unique opportunity to catch hybrid striped bass in Hyco Lake with an initial stocking of 37,500 fingerlings. This 3,750-acre lake south of the Virginia border in Person and Caswell counties was pegged by biologists as suitable for a hybrids, or Bodie bass, because of its warm year-round water temperatures, a wide forage base and ample depth for this deep, open-water species. The fish are expected to reach harvestable size within the next year or two. Bodie bass regulations on Hyco will be four fish a day with a 16-inch minimum length. Bodie bass are a cross between striped bass and white bass. They grow larger than white bass and withstand higher water temperatures than striped bass. “Adult Bodie bass are a schooling fish typically found in open water searching for shad or other prey fishes. In Hyco Lake, tilapia may provide an additional food source not found in other reservoirs in the state,” said District 5 Fisheries Biologist Kelsey Lincoln. “This possible predator-and-prey interaction could make for some fun fishing opportunities.” Bodie bass are captured using various angling techniques including trolling, artificial lures and live bait. While Bodie bass do not grow as large as striped bass do, they commonly reach 5 pounds. Next summer, Commission staff will stock additional Bodie bass fingerlings in the lake at a rate between five and 10 fish per acre. Biologists will monitor the population to determine the success of the fishery and to update management recommendations.

Chasing The Dream

ver the last decade, tournament bass fishing has undergone some major changes for young anglers. From high school club teams to officially sanctioned tournament trails, the pursuit has been recognized and is being treated more and more like a traditional high school sport. The best young anglers earn college scholarships for fishing. North Carolina’s Trent Lawson, aka The Fish Nemesis, is a young angler with a dream of bass fishing on the big stage. “I think like a fish,” he said, and it’s that thought process that has given Trent a shot at living his dream. His dad first introduced him to fishing when he was 7 years old. “I didn’t like fishing at all,” Trent recalled. Later, though, he went with friends and realized he had found his passion.

He started fishing every week at a nearby farm pond. Eventually, a family friend introduced him to Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, N.C. From there, Trent knew he wanted to become a professional bass fisherman. He has set the course to make it happen. The bass fishing industry is tough. For most, the dream of fishing professionally is just that, a dream. Trent’s determination and confidence in his ability has kept him forging ahead. Trent’s high school did not have a fishing team, so he joined Patrick County High School’s team less than an hour from his home, but across the state line in Virginia. They welcomed him. Already well into their season, the team had one more qualifying event left. Trent and his teammate qualified for the Bassmasters High School Championship in Virginia and placed sixth in the state championship series. Trent also competes outside of school in other tournament trails. He has amassed at least 20 wins and numerous top-10 finishes. He is sponsored by Fishing Complete, the parent company of some of the industry’s top baits and terminal tackle. He also has a YouTube channel called “The Fish Nemesis,” where you can watch and learn from his fishing techniques. Not only is Trent intelligent at fishing, he is an honor roll student. He understands the difficult road of becoming a pro and values a good education. He needed to find a college with a fishing team. Trent’s dad contacted the fishing coach at Tennessee’s Bethel University to seek advice on scholarships and the fishing team. Bethel University was the first school to recognize bass fishing as an organized sport. The coach asked for Trent’s resume, offered his cell phone number and advised Trent to keep him posted. Trent texted his fishing accomplishments every week. Trent’s perseverance, hard work and excellent grades have resulted in a bass fishing scholarship offer from Bethel University. Trent plans to major in business and marketing. If he doesn’t become a professional angler, he intends to use his knowledge to possibly work in marketing for a bait company or start his own business. Remember the name Trent Lawson. He is on the path to bring his dream to fruition.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag

or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
