although great variability exists between the northern and southern islands. This variability is most easily seen on Andros, the largest Bahamian island, where pine forests dominate in the north and give way to more tropical vegetation in the south. The majority of The Bahamas are low lying, with about 80 percent of the islands less than 15 feet above sea level. This, along with the fact that the islands span a great distance in warm tropical waters, make them attractive to tourists, who flock in for beautiful beaches, friendly faces and fantastic fishing. The Bahamas are heavily reliant on tourism, and for many “Family Islands,” angling tourism is vital for their survival. Unfortunately, these geographical traits also make The Bahamas susceptible to flooding and damage from tropical storms and hurricanes. The expansive nature of the islands of The Bahamas is a mixed blessing. Being large means Bahamians are more likely to be impacted somewhere in the chain by severe weather, but it also means many areas will remain untouched. This was the case with Hurricane Dorian, which devastated the two most northern islands, Abaco and Grand Bahama, but left countless others unharmed. The impact from Dorian on Abaco and Grand Bahama is catastrophic, and the outpourings of aid a blessing. Fly Fishing for Southeastern Hybrids and Stripers

cross the region, hybrid and striped bass are some of the most exciting gamefish in our reservoirs. Targeting them with flies can be difficult, but it has to be the most exciting way to catch them. Any article written about this subject better mention the name Henry Cowen. Having chased stripers on north Georgia’s Lake Lanier for more than 20 years, Cowen is a pioneer of the specialized techniques and tackle it takes. I fish middle-Georgia’s Lake Oconee, and much of what I do was learned from Cowen. There are differences between the two reservoirs, but I believe similar techniques, patterns and equipment can be adapted to catch stripers and hybrids on any lake. EQUIPMENT I like a 9-foot, 8-weight rod. Scott’s Meridian is my choice, but that model is being replaced by their similar Flex fast-action freshwater, which will probably do the job just as well. Stripers and hybrids pull hard, so you’ll need a decent reel. I use a Lamson Speedstar. It’s not too high end, but it does have a sealed conical drag. For line, I use RIO Intouch Outbound short intermediate most of the time. This allows me to fish both on the surface and below it without having to change spools. OPPORTUNITIES AND TACTICS Topwater: Fly fishing for stripers and hybrids when they are feeding on top is exhilarating. Imagine a school of fish knocking threadfin shad into the air. In some cases they’ll rise every 10 square feet for 30 or 40 feet around your boat. It’s amazing, but it requires specialized conditions. On Oconee, this occurs when water is pumping up from Wallace dam. When water temperatures are warm, it is a brief, first-light bite, but as the water cools it lasts longer. I cast a Cowen’s Somethin’ Else, a wiggle minnow, or a Pop-N-

Fly rig. The Somethin’ Else is my go-to fly. If they are schooling, I approach with as much stealth as possible and make a long cast just beyond and in front of the rising fish. The retrieve is critical. Cowen calls it “feeding the fish.” It is five short strips followed by a pause. If you get bit, get the fish on reel quickly. You’d be surprised how fast charging hybrids can snap a leader. The wiggle minnow is fished differently, same basic cast, but you need to keep the fly moving. Often it’s good to put the rod under your arm and strip with both hands. Gary Dubiel’s Pop-N-Fly is a popping cork for a fly rod. Tie in a feathered, white floating fly behind it, and it is deadly. Chasing Gulls: This usually fires up on Oconee in November and is very good in December. It’s a tactic employed by striper and hybrid fishermen all over the Southeast. While this is a topwater bite, and you will see the gulls dive bombing shad, use the Somethin’ Else exclusively during this time and you will have greater success. Night Fishing: If you like to get up very early or don’t mind fishing at night, darkness may offer the best probability of connecting with a striper or hybrid. Dock lights are key. Approach very quietly and work the outer edges of the light. Again, use intermediate line and Somethin’ Else. Be ready to haul a big fish away from the dock pilings in a hurry. If you get a big striper on, it might require assistance from the trolling motor. Fishing Humps: When the fish are not on top, it’s time to locate humps with your electronics and fish deep. On Oconee, this usually means humps that rise from 30 feet or deeper up to 15 feet. You’ll need sink-tip line for this tactic and a short piece of 12-lb. fluorocarbon leader. Cast past the hump and count down the fly as it drops to the fish. The count will vary depending on the fly and line you’re using. Capt. Wayne Moore owns Oconee On The Fly. Jake’s Outdoor Adventures By Jake Worthington

s I am writing this column, we have just been hit by Hurricane Dorian. Hurricane Dorian came as an unwelcome visitor to Ocracoke, Hatteras Island and the northern Outer Banks bringing with it high wind speeds, rain and a storm surge that brought catastrophic flooding. Ocracoke and Hatteras Island received the major blow of this hurricane and it will take months-- if not years-- for some people’s lives to be back to normal. Hurricanes are a part of life living on the Outer Banks and when you live here, you learn to take them in stride but you always worry. During the hurricane the fishing pier I grew up on since I was seven years old was damaged heavily by storm surge, swift currents and high waves. The Avalon Pier first received damage when a section of the pier was washed away. When I saw the pictures that were coming in, my heart sank as I thought about all the memories I had growing up on those same planks. As I was just accepting the fact that she was damaged, I saw further reports that showed the end of the pier had washed away. I sat in shock and felt like a part of me had washed away with it. Once again, memories went through my head as I remembered the first red drum I caught on a cool October fall afternoon, my first live bait cobia, and tons of friends I had made on those wooden planks. Growing up on a fishing pier and spending time fishing from sunup to sunset was one of my greatest childhood memories. Even when I branched out to boat fishing, I always had my love of those wooden planks in my heart and I always returned to them to fish. Several years back as a fundraiser for storm pier repairs caused by Hurricane Sandy, my parents purchased a fish plaque with my name on it and it was placed in my favorite southeast corner of the pier. When Hurricane Dorian caused the pier to collapse into the ocean, many of these plaques went into the ocean as well. I saw reports of some plaques being recovered on the beach but mine was not yet found. I was able to come to the beach on the Saturday after the storm and see the damage to the pier in person. I then began to walk down the beach in search of the southeast corner of the pier that hopefully had washed back onto shore. After walking several miles, I started recognizing sections of the pier. Then as luck would have it, I turned over a board that was under a large pile of debris, and I found my plaque that was attached to the pier rail. It was a lucky find and I was so relieved and glad to find it so I will always have that memory of the pier. I want to tell everyone that losing a pier is an inconvenience when you look at the big picture of people who have lost their homes and everything they own. I don’t want this article to minimize their loss but to share my thoughts about losing something that was special to me. If you can, I respectfully ask that you support these Outer Banks businesses when they reopen and help them recover!

NEW VIRGINIA STATE RECORD 5 - A 466-pound swordfish, caught on August 16, 2019, by Tony Gower Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, has been certified as the new Virginia State Record by the Director of Virginia’s Saltwater Fishing Tournament. YOUR ENGINE’S SPARK PLUGS These days, most boaters don’t get a chance to even see their engine’s spark plugs, let alone change them. Today’s EFI and DFI engines run so much cleaner, plugs don’t foul or need changing often. WHICH PLUGS FOR MY ENGINE? Don’t take chances on which plugs to run. Engineers know what they’re doing, and they specify the correct heat range, length and type of spark plug for good reason. Check with your dealer or check your engine’s manual to ensure you’re using the correct spark plugs. Unless you bought your rig brand-new and have never changed plugs, don’t automatically assume that the spark plugs in the engine now are the correct ones. Be careful…”close enough” won’t do, as the plugs you try to fit could easily cause engine damage by being too long, or the wrong heat range for the engine. Our money’s on the dealer for the most accurate information; he’d be the only one able to tell you if your engine manufacturer has issued any service bulletins advising of a new spark plug for your application—or, if you have a special application (extended trolling, for example) your dealer may have a service bulletin advising of a special plug for that use. CHANGING TIPS Don’t use any old socket. Spark plug sockets have a special foam cushion inside so the plug’s porcelain snout is protected during removal and installation. Using a standard socket may crack the porcelain if you’re not careful, and you may not know you’ve cracked one until you fire up the engine again. On many applications (example: fourstroke stern drive and jet engines, especially those in PWCs) the plugs are buried down deep, requiring a deft and careful touch as well as a long reach socket extension and a very tight gripping spark plug socket so as not to drop or lose the plug down in the engine well when removing or installing. Best advice in these situations? Move deliberately and carefully, and don’t let anyone rush you. I’ve been there and done that; fishing a brand-new plug out of the bottom of the bilge of a Yamaha Waverunner is not fun, especially when you get to clean it off and gap it properly all over again. Handy tip—an extendable “mechanic’s magnet” can come in very handy in this instance.

“READING” PLUGS Unless the engine’s exhibiting running problems, it’s likely your plugs will come out of the engine looking pretty much all the same; the insulator nose and electrode (see photos) should be a deep brown color, with no abnormal deposits. If you see water droplets, aluminum speckles, or a decidedly whitish color, see your dealer before running the engine again. Water droplets may mean a leaky head gasket or exhaust manifold. Aluminum speckles mean preignition and impending “meltdown”. Whitish electrode and/or insulator nose (as compared to the normal brown color) means a very lean fuel-air mixture. All of these signs point to a very unhealthy engine; see your dealer! If one or more plugs are not “colored in” (that deep brown color), they may not be firing at all; this may indicate an ignition or fuel delivery problem in the cylinder(s) they came from. Again, see your dealer before running the engine again. THE GERMAN TORQUE SPEC When reinstalling spark plugs, don’t use that old mechanic’s joke (you know…the old German torque specification, “goodentite”). If possible, use a torque wrench adjusted to the proper specification according to your dealer and/or engine manual. Typically, 18-20 foot-pounds is as tight as any spark plug needs to be. Over-tightening is a huge mistake; if the threads are stripped out, the cylinder head will have to be removed and re-threaded. On a two-stroke outboard, not a big deal. On a four-stroke engine, you could incur a huge repair bill. Be careful. John Tiger has published columns and articles about boating and towing for over 25 years. And as you the reader reads this, you now know what the rules and regs are regarding the fall Rockfish season. Since the final decisions were not made until Sept 24th, the rules and regs simply were not in place yet to be able to report. So in other words at the time of this writing, I have NO idea what the final results will be. One thing that is very much on a positive note is the VMRC now has live public streaming of these meetings. Plus you can comment in real time online during the meeting. This is HUGE! This gives the authorities a MUCH greater idea of the type of input from anglers. Cudos to VMRC for doing this. They probably will be doing live streaming now at most public hearings and to log on, just go to the vmrc website and they will announce the next public meeting at https://www.mrc.virginia.gov/ Regarding other fish, well, things have been jamming pretty good. The offshore bite this Sept has been pretty darn good with Kings being caught, tuna, and lots of bailer dolphin. All my favorites. The cobia exodus is making for some excellent bites and some nice rockfish have been caught at Kiptopeake State Park while drum fishing. All in all, a pretty good fall this year. STEAMED SHRIMP - THE RIGHT WAY! I was chatting with the owner of Dinkums Seafood Smitty Dize who also happens to be the Mayor of Cape Charles in Virginia. The subject was shrimp of which Dinkums sells and delivers a variety of shrimp including fresh Virginia Shrimp while in season. The interesting the about buying shrimp should always be “buyer Beware” because often when you think you are buying fresh shrimp, you are not. Typical scenario is you walk into a seafood retailer and you see pounds of shrimp sitting on ice with the words “shrimp $$$ a pound” what ever the price maybe. If seems to reason that the shrimp would be fresh, but often it is not. Retailers sometimes will sell fresh frozen shrimp and display it as fresh. So how does one know what they are buying? The first thing to always do is ask if the shrimp is fresh or fresh frozen. You can also tell by looking at the shrimp. If the claws seem fresh and spongy and or if the heads are on, that is a good sign of a fresh shrimp. If the shrimp are fairly colorless, heads are off and the legs are limp, you probably are dealing with frozen. The taste is different between the two and if you have leftovers, you do not want to re freeze already pre frozen shrimp. So, be careful of what you buy. Now for the recipe. - Most folks will just put some water in a pot and steam away their favorite shrimp. Of course, it does taste good but it will be a dang site better if you steam with flavor! JB’s liquid mix is: 12 ounce of beer ½ cup white wine 1 cup of water ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar 5 garlic cloves Put it all a steamer pot and bring to a boil. To prepare the shrimp I use a light seafood seasoning, if you like Old Bay that is fine but I think it is a bit heavy just for shrimp. Do NOT overcook your shrimp! Just steam until the outside is red and remove. They will finish cooking while plated. This keeps them from getting tuff and overcooked.

n a previous article, I recounted the purchase of the “Red Ruin,” our new cozy home overlooking the Bay. Truth was that the home had good bones, but that was where the positives ended except for a large fireplace in the great room. As the only son and part time aluminum boat captain, I was tasked with hammering every nail on the floors. I was nominated for this because of being uniquely equipped with a skateboard. I put a rug on top of the board and slowly moved laterally with my hammer and nail punch. There were thousands of nail heads to pound, prior to the sanding. I learned, quickly, not be distracted from watching the hammer hit the punch. After icing my hand, a couple of times, I learned to concentrate. Whilst doing my ministrations, my Mom and friends were cleaning the walls. Unbelievably, it took 37 quarts of ammonia to clean the grime off the walls. Turned out under the grime, lay some beautiful tongue and groove cypress wood paneling. The heating unit was an old oil burning unit, that occasionally blew smoke into the house. On the plus side, we ate well, and were warmed by the large fireplace. At night, we would eat dinner and then sit by the fire. Then the task was to stay awake after 9pm, as Pop and I discussed our next fish harvesting adventures. The fire was warm, and the wind blew hard and cold, outside. The old heating system needed to be replaced, as it belched a smog – like vapor. We brought the redwood furniture in from the deck for the winter. While the systems were changed, I found that lying in a sleeping bag on a redwood lounger by the fireplace was very rewarding. Eventually, we were comforted by a new, less smelly, gas heating system. I however used the lounger and sleeping bag combo for the rest of the winter, at least when we didn’t have guests. Spring finally came and there was a shift from the inside reclamation projects to the need to get boats in the water and get back to catching our own dinner. Pop’s vision could now be realized. The Garvey could now be launched from our own beach. Our friend Tom had a Ranchero with a trailer hitch and soon we were watching him drive backwards with the pride of our fleet. Being new to beach launching, an unforeseen issue arose, soon the trailer’s wheels sank into the soft sand. One of the advantages to restoring the Red Ruin, was there was a lot of construction material/debris available for use. Work began to create a wooden railway down to the bay. This was an amazing engineering feat, but due to the length of time to design and construct, the tide went out. Bad timing. Tom pulled to the

side of the house and a cinderblock was placed under the trailer tongue. Time to eat and drink, not that there was ever a bad excuse to take a break, this one was a required break, due to unfavorable tides. The beer, manhattans, martinis and for me, a Coke began to flow. That night we ate flounder and shrimp on our new back deck and watched the sunset. I noticed that occasionally Pop would glance at our 16 - foot Garvey as if it was a yacht. I guess for him and, actually for Mom and me, it really was. Tom came back early the next day and the Garvey was launched. Pop stood proudly, line to the Garvey in hand and proclaimed that the clams and crabs were once again subject to become our dinner. They didn’t answer him, though I am sure that they dug deeper in the sand. Soon, we would wade out to the boat and bring it ashore to load up. Once the appropriate harvesting equipment was loaded and the cooler containing drinks and the much-revered hoagies were on board, off we went. Soon we were bobbing in the Bay and dropping a fishing line, disembarking to the clam grounds or throwing a line with sinker and piece of menhaden overboard. Life was good. Then, we had a guest who asked if he could water ski behind the Garvey? That simple request would, again, impact our maritime life. Pop thought that this would be a fun idea and was another use of the Garvey, other than the merciless harvesting of unsuspecting sea creatures. So, we went to the local sporting goods shop and purchased skis and ski rope. I cannot remember the name of the fellow that wanted to ski, but I will call him Biff. Into the Bay we went. We attached the rope to an eye bolt on the port side and Biff swam out with the skis and rope. Attached to our Garvey was a 35 hp Evinrude motor. Biff gave the hand chop signal, indicating that he was ready and the general direction he wanted to go, I think. Pop rammed the throttle open, the bow rose, and Biff took a header. Not the anticipated outcome, but Biff was game to go again. He said that we needed to start quicker. Good luck. We got everything aligned, again and this time Biff rose like the bow and we had ourselves a ski boat. Now the Garvey was a flat - bottomed boat. Down the Bay we went, practically sideways, with Biff in tow. We look like a plane trying to land in a crosswind. This was a new way of crabbing for us. Biff had fun, we had fun and the sea life was preserved. So many memories, so little time.

here’s a brutish undercurrent gaining momentum in fly fishing. Whether it’s river-run striped bass, muskie or carp, long-rodders are targeting freshwater’s most powerful fish. Here are a few destinations where you can get in on the action. James River Photo courtesy of Matt Miles Muskie, Virginia The James River is one of the few rivers in the east that supports a fishable wild muskie population. Guide Matt Miles eagerly pointed out that most of the fish they catch, the 35- to 42-inchers, were spawned wild in the upper James. He said the monster 50-inchers might have originally come from the hatchery, but they still prowl the river, ready to give anglers the adrenaline rush of a lifetime. Between Iron Gate and Lynchburg, Va., more than 80 miles of the James are considered muskie water. The relatively shallow pool and riffle habitat is uniquely suited to hunting freshwater’s biggest, toothiest fish with a fly rod. But muskie fishing isn’t for everyone. Casting waterlogged, 14-inch-long streamers on sinking lines with 10- and 11-weight rods is a workout. Doing it all day in hope of a single take requires mental fortitude. Peak muskie season is October through mid-March.

Saluda & Congaree River Striper, South Carolina Each spring, South Carolina striped bass go on the move. From the Santee-Cooper Lakes between Columbia and Charleston, fish run some 60 miles up the Congaree and arrive in Columbia to spawn in April. By early May they push into the lower Saluda, where they spend the summer in the cold-water refuge of a 10-mile stretch of tailwater. Jake Howard, of Saluda Valley Guides, tapes his thumbs during the June through August heart of the striper season because they become raw from lipping fish. He told of huge numbers of stripers and said 60-fish days are possible for anglers who can lay out line with a 10-weight rod and 350-grain sinking lines. The standard fish weighs 4 to 8 pounds, but 20-, 30- and even 50-pounders are caught each season. Catawba Chain Carp, North Carolina More than 15 years ago, Capt. Paul Rose left the Texas coast with his flats skiff in tow. He settled in the North Carolina Piedmont, far from the salt marshes he loves. But he found a new passion in the clear Catawba River lakes between Asheville and Charlotte, N.C. In the shallows, he watched carp tailing like redfish. The fishing style that arose is a lot like sight casting to bonefish. Rose poles anglers over clear-water flats, searching for pods of carp rooting and feeding. Many clients hire Rose to practice before a trip to the Bahamas. They return because carp are so much fun. Fish from 3 pounds up to 20 pounds call for a 6- or 7-weight rod. The peak season on impoundments like Lake Norman and Lake James runs from May through September. n enormous 40-pound, 6-ounce brown trout caught at Lake Taneycomo in southwest Missouri is a new state record and just a couple pounds shy of the IGFA all-tackle world record. Bill Babler, a veteran fishing guide from Blue Eye, Mo., caught the monster brown on Sept. 4 using a pink Berkley plastic worm. He caught it on 6x tippet, which equates to less than 4-pound test, making his catch 2 ounces heavier than the current IGFA 4-pound line class record. The previous state record, set just seven months, weighed 34 pounds, 10 ounces. It was also caught at Lake Taneycomo. Babler told the Springfield News-Leader he’d only been out fishing for a few minutes when he caught his new state record. “As soon as I set the hook it came to the top and I knew we had a good fish on,” Babler told the newspaper. “We positioned the boat in an unobstructed area. It was pulling drag pretty good!” Babler attempted to keep the behemoth alive in an aerated tank, but unfortunately the trout died before it could be released. He’ll typically kick the morning off with redfish encounters in depths of 2 feet or less. As the sun grows stronger, he’ll probe docks and structure looking for summer flounder before finishing off with feisty seatrout in feeder creeks. “I’m thinking this season will be a special one if we don’t get smacked by any major storms,” said Collins. “There’s tons of bait around already, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen as many mullet as we have this year. Crabs and small menhaden are abundant, too. Plus we have tons of shrimp; everything loves shrimp.” By Tom Schlichter Collins targets early morning reds around oyster bars, oyster reefs and oyster rocks in water that is generally hip-deep or less. He’ll slam that as soon as it starts to sink.” For flounder, Collins hops his bucktail about a foot at a time, but it’s vital you actually feel it strike bottom on the drop. “Most hits come as the lure falls, and if you don’t feel it hit bottom it’s probably in a fish’s mouth,” he said. “Strike immediately, because those flounder spit a lure out quickly once they realize it’s a fake.” As for the specks, Collins recommends getting on them as soon as possible. “You’ll find the biggest fish arrive first,” he said. SIGHT CASTING TO LOUISIANA’S BIG BULL REDS ON THE FLY

t’s no secret that the Louisiana coast is an inshore angler’s dream. A seemingly endless tangle of interconnected waterways, with big salt lakes, canals, grass, oysters and mud flats make the bayous south of New Orleans the No. 1 destination in the world for redfish. Places like Grand Isle, Cocodrie, Venice, Delacroix and Hopedale are the destinations for redfish anglers seeking out some of the best fishing on the planet. The region is filthy with reds, and targeting big bulls with a fly rod is the ultimate thrill. Angler Michael Booth Jr. and his buddies, many who are local captains, have made a practice of sight fishing these monsters. Instead of working the grass to find individual bulls or pods of slotsized redfish, they move out deeper on the big lakes in search of

schools of big bulls, which usually hunt in the 3- to 4-foot depths 100 to 200 yards off the grass. “The weather has to be good for a couple weeks beforehand for the water to be clean enough to see them,” said Booth “When we go out looking for schools of big fish, we start about 20 yards out and pole that line until we figure out where the reds are holding that day. Then they’ll usually all be in that same area.” On certain special days, when a strong northeast wind and a low tide suck the water out of the marsh around Hopedale, those 4-foot depths become 2 feet and spotting fish is easy. “Those big bulls will all be belly crawling with their backs out of the water,” said Booth. But normally, finding fish means looking for the telltale dark triangles of tails and fins or fish pushing water as they chase bait and root for crabs. Booth said a good pair of green-mirror glasses with amber lenses makes it easier to distinguish the shadows and colors of a big redfish in tannic-stained water. Once you find them, tempting them to eat a fly is a matter of trial and error to find the fly and retrieve they want on a given day. Booth prefers fishing on top, and a size 2 Surface Seducer Double Barrel popper is the hot bait at the moment. Booth likes purple, gold, chartreuse, black and combinations of those colors. Sometimes, when the fish aren’t feeding as actively, Booth said he’s forced to fish something that sinks. A size 2 shrimp pattern with extra large dumbbell eyes becomes the bait of choice. Again, purple and chartreuse work well, as do more natural tan or olive patterns. A 10-weight rod, floating line and a 50-40-30 leader with 12 to 18 inches of 16- to 20-pound tippet are in order. Booth said he’s seen days that brought 10 fish over 20 pounds to the rail and others when a single 40-pound red was reason for rejoicing. “Any day you’re able to catch a 20-plus-pound bull red on a fly is pretty awesome,” he said.
