oling his skiff through grass in shin-deep water, Capt. Josh Boyles was the first to spot a big redfish crashing bait about 100 yards away. The vast grass beds around Hilton Head, S.C. were inundated in an especially high tide, and we had been working them for a couple hours with limited success. Most of the limited success was blamed on a pair of trout anglers with little saltwater fly fishing experience. Boyles had already put us on a couple fish. We had botched both royally. Conditions seemed right, with plenty of water for reds to push into in search of crabs, but the fish weren’t showing themselves. And we needed to see fish in order to cast to them with one of Boyles’ Swamp Fox flies on an 8-weight fly rod. “I’m not going to lie. This is pretty slow,” Boyles said. “We should be seeing a half-dozen fish at once and trying to decide which one to go after.” With classic tailing redfish behavior, fish root around with their noses in the muck. On the other end, their tails wave above the surface like little beacons. Reds are not hard to find when they do what they’re supposed to. These fish were not cooperating. Instead of seeking tails, we were reduced to watching for unusual wakes and nervous water. Boyles hypothesized the fish might be eating baitfish or shrimp instead of crabs, which would account for their horizontal position in skinny water. As we poled slowly to where the fish was spotted in an open pool amid a sea of grass, I stripped line from the reel and onto the deck. There was no additional sign of the fish, but we had to check it out. The tide was beginning to turn out, and it would take all the fish with it. Boyles had earlier explained why tailing reds are great sport for fly rodders just getting into the saltwater game. Redfish are comfortable in the shallows, so they don’t spook easily. Also, they feed actively and opportunistically in the grass. If they see the fly, they will most likely eat it. When our redfish reappeared, it was right in front of the boat. So close that it made casting difficult. I saw it for a second, but Boyles could see it clear as day from the platform. He began barking instructions. “Two o’clock, about 15 feet out,” he said. “See the wake?” The fish was moving right to left across the bow. I made a timid first cast, which caught the wind and plopped down off target. “Pick it up! Do it again,” Boyles said, urgency entering his voice. “Play the wind. Put it in front of him.” The pressure was on, and the second cast was better. “Strip it… Strip it… Now stop!” Boyles instructed as he watched the action unfold. “Give it a little twitch.” He didn’t have to tell me to set the hook.

and relaxed, and “becoming one with nature” will you be part of the tribe. This unlikely fraternity of ocean hunters is made up of men and women of all ages, races and socio-economic status. The only rules here are made by Mother Nature, and the only requirement is an unspoken bond with the ocean and a respect for its resources. Unlike our mostly predictable lives, every dive is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get. I’ve experienced a school of mantas flying by, a gentle whaleshark ambling along, a sunfish scratching itself on our anchor line. I’ve experienced the exhilaration of being accepted by a pod of wild dolphins. I’ve been bumped by a hammerhead and stared down by a menacing mako. I’ve endured jellyfish stings, sealice rashes, and a crab in my ear canal. The most thrilling sight of all—after paying your dues—is spotting your prey in the shadows.

have a friend at work who is horrified by my spearfishing. He asks, “Why don’t you just buy fish at the market? Aren’t you scared of sharks? What’s it like?” I know spearfishing will never be his cup of tea, but I try to explain why it’s mine. The simple answer is it’s fun to jump into tropical water and choose a delicious fish for dinner. But the truth is those flat, warm, fishy days are few and far between. The truth is that weathermen are liars, visibility can turn ugly, and fish are unpredictable. The truth is that underwater hunting is hard work in an alien environment. One of many challenges is to become comfortable underwater—so comfortable that fish believe you belong there. Fish sense herkyjerky motions and aggression, which means you will never be able to stalk them unless you learn to control your movements, and more importantly, your emotions. You must also overcome the primal fear of becoming the hunted, which is ingrained in all of us. And, as a freediver, you must become adept enough to achieve decent breath hold times. Only after persevering, learning to be smooth

When hunting tunas, the sight of the yellow finlets speeding under you will make your heart thump. When hunting wahoos, the silver ghost appearing out of nowhere will take your breath away. The realization that your eye has caught the silhouette of a black grouper in the reef will send you into adrenalized stealth mode. Back at the dock, as you fillet your fish and watch the sun set, you feel a sense of accomplishment and relief to be back on solid ground. But you also feel a sense of longing to be back in the weightless, quiet, unpredictable, beautiful ocean. As cell phones begin to ring, traffic on the way home raises your blood pressure, and thoughts of work invade your brain, you begin to plan your next trip back to the soul-cleansing world beneath the sea. In 1859, Nevada’s Comstock Lode was discovered, and soon its rich silver ore made its way across the nation, including to the fabled New Orleans Mint, the only U.S. Mint branch to have served under the U.S. government, the State of Louisiana and the Confederacy. Deep Summer’s Shallow-Water Option By CAM Staff

ere’s some advice for bass anglers sick of the summertime grind. Instead of dredging out deep ledges or dragging worms on offshore humps, go shallow and beat the banks. Yes. You read that right. In deep summer, bass that aren’t stacked up deep will scatter to seek out the best water conditions and feeding opportunities they can find. And while you probably shouldn’t throw all your tournamentday hopes into this pattern, which really is hit-or-miss, hitting it right can lead to some of the biggest largemouths of the summer. Wave action is a key to this pattern. On lakes with heavy boat traffic and on windy days, waves slamming into the banks oxygenate water. While water conditions across the rest of the lake are hot and stagnant this time of year, the shallows offer higher oxygen levels that attract baitfish and bass. By the same token, the backs of creeks with some current often offer better oxygen levels as well as cooler water. Vegetation oxygenates water, also, and provides shade from the stifling sun. Bait is another reason big fish will be up shallow. All of the bream species—the bluegills, shellcrackers, redbreasts and others—spawn during the full moons of summer. When they bed up in colonies, they do it in the shallows, often in just a couple feet of water. Bream beds are buffets for big largemouths, which hang just off the beds waiting on any strays small enough to fit in their mouths. Now, beating the banks all day looking for one big fish in the scorching August heat doesn’t sound like much fun. But that one kicker fish you need to bolster a tournament limit is not likely to be hanging out with all those 2-pounders suspended on a deep ledge. These are also great tactics for fun fishing, when you’ve got the luxury to only fish the comfortable morning and evening hours. In low light, a buzzbait burned around a bream bed or in the shadows of a blowdown can be just the thing to draw a reaction strike from a big girl lazing in the shallows. Running a spinnerbait, bladed jig or square-bill crankbait around and under shallow docks can be very productive. Resist the urge to slow down and pick apart cover with a jig or worm. Shallow fish will be scattered this time of year, so it makes sense to cover a lot of water. Hit all the stumps, grass, rocks and any other cover you encounter. Keep moving, but do it slowly and quietly. Keep your distance, and make long casts. Sound travels far and fish spook easily in the shallows.

Those were the closing words of Navy Veteran Chris as we closed the day together in June. We are always thrilled to hear that type of feedback from the Veterans we take out on the water! Our mission here at Hook Line and Heroes is based around the love and compassion we share for our servicemen and women who defend our freedom.

We give nominated Veterans with service-connected disabilities the opportunity to spend a day in the beauty of God’s creation and relax while fishing. As we can all agree, the outdoors is a great place to bring peace of mind, calming, reflection, and a chance to put aside the typical day-to-day stresses. The day with Chris was a wonderful one. Our friends at The Reel Deal Charters did an amazing job guiding us through the Low Country and Charleston Harbor. Chris was busy all day catching red fish, black sea bass, trout, lady fish and even a bonnet head shark! His son CJ was able to join us as well which always helps to add to the memories and the therapeutic atmosphere we try and create. We love welcoming a child or spouse because they are of course a part of the healing process. Our trips are targeted to be a relaxing experience between a representative of Hook Line and Heroes and the Veteran. No matter where the trip is located throughout the Carolinas or Virginia, we always provide a licensed fishing guide as well to ensure the Veteran has the best experience catching fish that day.

Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations

ne of the side benefits to our owning the Larson inboard/ outboard was that, over time I moved up from being a part time rowboat captain to garvey captain. This was a substantially larger boat at 16’ with a serious Evinrude 40hp motor. I was initially allowed to take the boat out by myself, although I needed to be within binocular distance. I enjoyed the excitement of running this boat, anchoring and fishing or crabbing. I was, of course, only allowed to captain at times that there was parental control of the binoculars and no other seafood harvesting event conflict. I mentioned that I had a rescue dog named Bubba. At some point, Bubba became a member of the family and loved to ride on the boat. She was an amazing, Heinz 57 dog, that had some Sheltie, but additional other unknown influences. She was in extremely poor condition when I got her, but with time had made a full recovery. This also meant that we were closely bonded. Bubba was happy to ride in any of our boats, but she was particularly fond of the Garvey. It had gunnels with decking that allowed her to jump up and go to the bow. She loved to stand on the bow while we were underway. I mentioned in a previous article that she ended up in the water one time after we hit a wake. She was undeterred and resumed her stance looking for any cats that might have ventured out on the water. One time, I decided to take the garvey down to visit a friend. I did not plan on taking Bubba, as I was not going fishing. So, slowly I started up the motor, released the mooring and started off. Fortunately, as was my standard procedure, I looked back at the house. My Mother was frantically waving, which was not a standard procedure. I started to come about and then I noticed a small brown doggy head paddling for all she was worth. Bubba was always included in any boating plans going forward, as no one wanted to be responsible for drowning Bubba, the Sea Dog. I was never sure if her love of the fishy, wiggly wet thing or the love of her new best friend was the main motivating factor. She certainly wanted each seafood unit to know that, based upon her barking, she oversaw their short, but prestigious future. It was during this time that I fully developed my love for boating and dogs. I was now able to get into the boat (with Bubba) and explore, fish, clam and crab. Clamming was now a little more difficult. While I did not have to watch to make sure that Mom’s head and more importantly her hairdo, were above the water, Bubba presented another issue. I found out that Bubba, loyal buddy that she was, thought that she needed to rescue me when I got into the water. Off the boat she would jump and swim over to me. So, this meant that I needed to float two baskets, one for the clams and one to carry Bubba. She seemed to enjoy the cool water on her legs, as she kept her front paws on top of the inner tube. We were quite a sight, as I went under to get a clam, Bubba barked and bobbed in the waves, until I came up. I so appreciated my time with Bubba. She was such a kind spirit and it was impossible to have a bad day when she was around. I think all rescue animals know that they have gotten a second chance. This creates a deep, special bond. Bubba was one of several rescues that I have been fortunate to have. Even though it has been 40+ years since she crossed the rainbow bridge, I remember our time together as if it were yesterday. The Net Results Our catfishing success on Number 8 can be measured in the size of nets we have upgraded to since returning to catching the whiskered beasts a few years back. We started out catching 4-pound White Cats and 10-pound Blue Cats. Our initial net seemed large enough. I had always preferred smaller nets because anything larger than needed had the likelihood of getting tangled and hung up on lures, fins, boat parts, and legs. I’m supposed to spend more time fishing, not untangling. I didn’t know that monsters lurked below. We still had a huge landing net in the garage, referred to as “Big Blue” leftover from my offshore days. We used it for welcoming aboard Stripers, Cobia, Amberjack, and King Mackerel but surely it was too large for catfish. Then we caught a few 15 to 20 pounders. The War Department said, “We need a bigger net.” A quick trip to the sporting goods store solved that. We thought we bought a net large enough for any fish we were likely to catch in the Southeastern Virginia fresh waters that I fished. Then we caught our first 40-pound Blue Catfish. Now we bring “Big Blue” on all our catfishing excursions without reservation. Big Blue stands 7 feet tall overall with a collapsible 52-inch handle that has a fish measuring tape on it. When the handle is collapsed, the net is only 54-inches long overall and stores nicely in one of #8’s adjustable Cannon Rod Holders adjusted in the inboard vertical position. The teardrop frame of the net measures 32” long x 26” wide and the net is 36-inches deep. We bought this net back in the 80’s when they made gear tough. Purchasing a comparable net today will take more of an investment, but they are available at tackle shops specializing in saltwater and catfishing gear. Think big! A catfish is a big fish! UPDATE: The heat of summer is upon us. I’m not a fan of this time of year just from the aspect of comfort, but my fishing journal testifies that the cats love to play even in bathtub water temperatures. If you can find a boat ramp open after dark, this is the time to fish in the cool of the night. This is my time to retreat and service the rods, reels, and other fishing gear. Number 8 could use a little maintenance. It is also a good time to fly the biplane around looking for new fishing grounds. Next month, we’ll cover another page with equipment tips while we wait for the weather to cool off a bit. Hang in there and I’ll get back to fishing shortly. TIP: If you are going after brackish water cats, you might try a quarter of a blue crab for bait. Get Slimed

August Outer Banks It’s been a hot exciting summer of fishing and I hope it continues along! On the sound side it has been speckled trout! I mean big ones and good numbers! Jigs on poppin corks and live bait have been getting these big ones to the net. A 26-30 inch trout is a fish of a lifetime. Also in the grass flats are plenty of puppy drum. These spot tails are hard hitting and show a affinity for gold spoons. Fresh cut bait will get em as well. Inshore fishing we will find Spanish mackerel, ribbonfish, albacore on the troll bite. Sight casting big drum and a occasional Cobia along the beaches as well. Offshore there will be a staple of dolphin out there ready to hit. Billfish will be weighing in on most captains mind looking for excellent white marlin and blue marlin action. Stop by and check out the boats coming in and unloading Daily catches. t the time I am writing this, the guests are finally allowed to visit the OBX and begin our tourist season. If you are here on the Outer Banks this summer, please remember that this season is a learning process for business and hospitality owners who will be striving to make your vacation here as normal as it can based on the continued COVID-19 protocols. I don’t have to remind anyone reading this article that the year 2020 has been anything but normal. Local businesses here have suffered greatly because just as they were coming out of the winter and getting ready to gear up for the spring, the island was shut down to visitors for a couple of months. My father has always been a firm believer in supporting local businesses here at home and he has driven this mantra into my train of thought, as well. If you visit the OBX this summer, please support the small local businesses that work to make your visit here a great one. I know that it is only July, but now is a great time to do some Christmas shopping while you are here and help these business owners have at least a decent year. While you are here, buy that new rod and reel combo or have your reels line replaced. Stock up on hooks, weights, leader, lures and other supplies. Grab that new hoodie sweatshirt or t-shirts also. Every purchase you make on this island helps not only the owner and the store, but the community as a whole. While you are visiting the OBX, make a trip to the tackle shops and head to the pier, surf or book a charter and take the family on an adventure they will all remember. If you decide to charter a boat, remember to discuss with your Captain which species you want to target. Some people book a half day charter thinking they are going to catch a big Tuna like they do on Wicked Tuna. You can catch some nice Tuna but you are going to have to book a whole day Gulfstream charter to make that happen. If you have never fished offshore and you want to take the family, prepare yourself by maybe trying a near shore half day charter to make sure everyone can handle the boat ride and the possibility of seasickness that may come with it. Have a frank discussion with your Captain and make sure you are both on the same page for your charter. Also remember that it is customary to tip the first mate on the boat at a minimum of 20% for the work they perform to make your trip a success. If you are down in Wanchese, come see me on the Marauder when we come into Wanchese Marina and offload our catch of the day. Hope to see you on the docks! BOATING & TOWING: A Day at the Lake - Essentials for Safety & Enjoyment

t’s high summer, and hopefully you’re out for a day on the water. What should you pack? Safety first; hopefully these items will never be needed, but better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Second are items that may save the day in case of breakdown. Last but not least, the fun stuff; there are many “toys” and accessories that make a day on the lake more fun.

SAFETY

• A quality first aid kit is a number-one. Don’t just pack the standard kit aboard; depending on the price, many mass-produced “marine” first aid kits really don’t have the essentials needed. Inspect what’s inside and repack with essentials. Don’t forget to check and update the kit at least once per season. • A marine fire extinguisher is a must. Don’t skimp on this item, as it could literally save your life. • A quality paddle, just in case. • Quality sunscreen with high SPF rating, sunglasses, and head protection—especially for young ones and those with less hair! • Life vests, for everyone on board, in the proper sizes. While it’s common not to wear them, it’s mandatory that at least the kids do. Their condition should also be checked once per season.

EMERGENCY BREAKDOWN AND REPAIR

• A “jump start” box that—most important—is kept charged. A set of jumper cables to go with it is also a good idea. These come in handy after a day on the sandbar playing tunes. • A tool kit that you make up, much like the first aid kit—start with a generic marine toolkit, and add special items such as: duct tape, electrical tape, spare fuses, small rolls of wire, spare spark plugs, even a spare belt (for inboards and stern drives; don’t forget to learn how to install it, and have the tools needed). • A spare propeller with installation hardware (nut, thrust washer and related parts). • A spare ignition key and spare kill switch lanyard, in case of loss. • Don’t forget a spare quart of oil, whether your boat is stern drive, inboard or outboard, two or four-stroke. • Consider a spare gallon of fuel. It may get you to the nearest marina or at least to shore if you mistakenly run out. Be careful storing it; a fuel spill could be smelly, or disastrous. • Don’t skimp on tie-up lines and a towrope. These should be sturdy, and inspected for rot and deterioration annually. • An anchor is required gear in most states. Having one and using it could keep you from drifting down the lake if your engine’s out and you’re waiting for help. • A VHF radio could mean help coming when your cell phones don’t get a signal. A handheld will work fine if the batteries are charged.

A few beach towels complete the package. • Don’t forget jackets, dry clothes and sandals; you might want to tie up and head into town, and a bathing suit with bare feet won’t work. CONVENIENCE AND FUN

Every boating family can customize for their own; some or all of these items (depending on your boat’s storage capacity and what you’re into) will keep the day fun: • A cooler packed with refreshments, snacks and sandwiches is a must-have. • If your boat has a stereo, don’t rely on the radio; often times, the signal is weak on the water. An IPhone interface with a varied music library will ensure a good entertainment source throughout the day. • A beach anchor (or spike) helps keep your boat tethered to the sandbar for an afternoon of socializing, sunning and swimming. • Fishing gear (even a simple rod/reel and a small tackle box) will keep the boredom away, especially if the weather turns a little cloudy. • A bimini top or Anchor Shade-type boat umbrella keeps the blazing sun off your passengers, without closing in the cockpit. It’s a great accessory. • Water skis, kneeboard, wakeboard, and/or tube with towropes are typical water fun toys that help make a day on the lake memorable and 6 TIDEWATER & THE OUTER BANKS

CATCHIN’& COOKIN’ SUMMER SMASHBURGERS

August is the month for cook outs and here is a fav; Smashburgers! Get yourself some ground 80/20 burger and place in a large bowl. Now liberally shake Montreal steak seasoning all over the burger and mix. That is it. Make some medium size hamburger balls and set on a plate. Next heat up your cast iron skillet to medium high heat. Now cut two pieces of wax paper (or one for each burger) Take a pat of butter, one for each burger ball, and place in the skillet, then place your two burger balls on top of the butter, then the wax paper on top. To smash? I just use the bottom of a small pot, works perfect. For me, I love to marinade white onions, caramelize them with butter and white wine, then serve on top. Try it you will love it!

ALL SPADES IS ALWAYS A GOOD HAND by Jim Baugh reporting from Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, Cape Charles VA With so many species available to fish during the summer months, one of the favorites over the years for recreational anglers, as well as charters, is spade fish. Why? Well these fish are known to break fishing rods, they fight fantastic, and taste super on the dinner table. Also, usually you can see the schools of fish right by the boa; fun, fast, fishing action makes for a great day on the water. Jim Baugh Outdoors TV ventured out with Captain Alex Parez of Hook Shot Fishing charters and our special guest was my friend Wayne Bradby. This was one of those target trips where we wanted to hook into Wayne’s first cobia of the season. Well as cobia fishing goes, they were not hitting on anything. So what saved the day? An awesome time catching spade fish off the pilings at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. What a blast! One of the most spectacular sights this summer was the Neowise Comet during late July. This is a photo op that only happens around once every 6000 years. AREA ANGLER CLUBS The Great Bridge Fisherman’s Association is a family-oriented fishing club located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake, Virginia. Our charter is to introduce new anglers to the sport of recreational fishing while promoting the conservation of our resources. The diversity of its membership covers all aspects of recreational fishing from freshwater to saltwater, surf to pier, and inshore to offshore fishing. The club is active in the community, sponsoring various events including Wish a Fish, an Annual Scholarship to high school seniors pursuing higher education and inshore party boat fishing for both our senior and disabled residents. Our Tournament Director also ensures that the membership sponsors and participates in various inter and intra club tournaments throughout the year. Some of our annual activities include a banquet, lead pouring, oyster roast and fishing flea market. Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is always a guest speaker talking on a wide range of topics and there are plenty of door prizes, raffles and snacks to round off the night. We meet at the Great Bridge Baptist Church located at 640 Battlefield Blvd South, Chesapeake, Virginia across the street from the YMCA. Guests are always welcome. The Tidewater Anglers Club (TAC) was founded in February of 1941 at a meeting at the Monticello Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. The objectives of the TAC were the same then as they are today—to promote legislation and fishing practices that effectively provide protection of the environment and our resources. TAC is an organization that influences the customs and practices for the conservation and propagation of fish and kindred creatures. The TAC organization is committed to the promotion of true sportsmanship among all fishermen along with providing entertainment and education for its members. The club has grown into a truly multidisciplined angling organization with almost equal individual and family memberships. Each year there are 11 monthly membership meetings and an Annual Awards Banquet. There are also club activities such as tournaments, family fishing days, a fish fry and other events which allow members to gather for fun and fellowship. The monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Bayside Presbyterian Church, 1400 Ewell Road, Virginia Beach, VA. (Intersection of Independence Blvd. and Ewell Rd.) Guests are always welcome and we usually serve light refreshments. Monthly meetings always include an educational talk or presentation on some aspect of fishing. Also members submit fishing contest forms and this information is used to select the winners of our annual trophies. The club maintains a record of all fish reported to determine club records. Special events bring everyone together for some fun and relaxation. These include hot dog and chili nights, our annual fish fry and our annual awards banquet for the awarding of the fish trophies. We are a group of about 100 members, of various levels of fishing experience, ranging from those of us who have not purchased their first fishing rod or tackle box or own a boat to those of us who have been fishing for over 60 years. In 2008, a group of men gathered on the Outer Banks with the purpose of organizing a club for fishing and called themselves the Outer Banks Anglers Club (OBXAC). The meetings are open to anyone, whether they are an experienced fisherman or those who are just starting out. At each meeting, the club has a monthly guest speaker that may be a member, a local fishing captain, biologists, state or local marine agencies, or has a connection with fishermen. Also, members will discuss their fishing trips and share information and sometimes pictures from the trips. Every month, members will submit their exemplary catches for the Fish of the Month contest. During the break, refreshments are served and members and guests can network. After the break, a short business meeting is conducted and ends with a raffle for a $50 gift certificate from TW’s Bait and Tackle, as well as a 50/50 raffle. eports are coming in from this summer’s big-game tournaments of some huge blue marlin topping the leaderboards. The largest we’ve heard of so far— 964 pounds— was a big meal shy of achieving grander status. There were also a couple of big fish caught in the Gulf of Mexico, one of which is a potential Alabama state record. The near-grander was caught July 4 in the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s North Atlantic coast by La Onda Mila, captained by Marty Bates. The fish won $464,000 and the 2020 Blue Marlin World Cup, which is open in waters worldwide for a single day. Another qualifying entry in the Blue Marlin World Cup was 667.2-pound blue, caught by Done Deal and Capt. Jason Buck from the central Gulf of Mexico. Weighed at Cypress Cove Marina in Venice, Louisiana, Done Deals’ big fish earned $339,200 for the optional Big Blue Challenge consolation prize. It was a big payday for Done Deal. Their 667.2-pounder was also entered in the July 4 Gulf Cup, in which boats may fish out of any Gulf of Mexico port. Done Deal earned an additional $128,000 for its catch as the Gulf Cup champion.

The next day, July 5, Ginger Myers sat in the chair of the Fleur-de-lis and battled a huge 851.9-pound blue to submission during the 2020 MONGO Offshore Challenge. Weighed at Orange Beach Marina, the fish is a pending Alabama state record and it also puts Myers in position to claim the largest blue marlin ever caught by a woman from the Gulf of Mexico. She’ll have to wait for the results of the MONGO, as the tournament runs through Oct. 15.

ew gear requirements required for anglers targeting snapper and grouper species went into effect July 15 for Atlantic waters from North Carolina through Florida. NOAA’s new regulations are designed to decrease mortality rates for released fish and require anglers to have a descending device on board and readily available while grouper or snapper fishing. The new rule also requires the use of non-offset, non-stainless steel hooks when fishing for snapper or grouper with hook-and-line gear and natural baits. More than 50 fish species fall under the umbrella of the snapper-grouper ‘complex,’ a diverse collection of offshore fish that are sought-after table fare and critical to a healthy ocean ecosystem. Some of the most commonly encountered snapper-grouper species are black seabass, vermilion snapper, triggerfish, red snapper, gag grouper and spadefish. Many snapper-grouper species live a long time, grow slowly, and reach maturity at a late age—all of which makes them vulnerable to overfishing and makes each adult fish valuable to the overall population. Because these fish are often pulled from deep waters, they’re at high risk of barotrauma, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when fish undergo rapid pressure changes. Barotrauma, often accompanied by bulging eyes and bloated stomachs, can be a death sentence for caught-and-released fish. Fortunately, barotrauma can be reversed through the use of a descending device, which helps anglers return fish to deep waters from which it was caught. Descending devices can range from sophisticated, commercially available instruments to a DIY weighted hook.

t’s not a coincidence...people who go “grouper fishing” come home with grouper in the box. People who go “bottom fishing” might catch a grouper, but they are more likely to fill the cooler with grunts, pinkies and sea bass. If you’re dropping cut squid and minnows on a high-low (chicken rig), you’ll have plenty of action, but you are not fishing for grouper. In order to specifically target grouper, you have to put baits on the bottom, and tackle that will accommodate that bait, in order to eliminate the trash bites. I love to eat grunts, pinkies and sea bass as much as the next guy, but I specifically target the grouper bite with the size and kind of bait I use. From an anchored boat, I typically start everyone out with whole squid and minnows to get the party going on the bottom. This creates a “chum slick” and gets the fish all excited. After half a dozen drops of sacrificial baits each, we change over to larger live and butterflied baits. Wherever you fish, the best bait to use is the bait that is there. That’s why I stay on the sabiki while everyone else is sending down squid. I’m fishing for grass grunts and beeliners (vermillion snapper) to be used live or butterflied. Don’t think for a minute that a 12inch beeliner is too big to use as bait. It’s not. A foot-long butterflied beeliner is the perfect bait for a big grouper.

The idea is to use baits that grunts and pinkies can’t fit in their mouths. If they do eat it, it will take them a long time and a lot of small bites. The angler must be patient with big baits like this. You’ll feel a lot of little “tap, tap, taps,” and then all of a sudden the little fish will stop biting. When the nibbling stops, it’s time to get ready. A lull often signifies the arrival of a bigger fish. It’s getting ready to happen! Live grass grunts on a Decoy Jig are probably my go-to big gag grouper bait, but a big butterflied beeliner is just as good. In the past, when we had abundant and inexpensive bait like frozen cigar minnows and sardines in 5-pound boxes, it was easy to take a few boxes of minnows and a couple boxes of squid for these sacrificial “chum” baits. Now, we have to be more creative. I keep a pinfish trap fishing a few days before a trip and butterfly a large bag of the biggest pinfish. You can also sabiki or cast net larger pinfish on any wreck or fish-cleaning station with a little chum. Cast net a few dozen big turbo pogies (menhaden) as a back-up if you can’t find big pinfish. Finding Trout On

SUMMERTIME TAILWATERS

f you’re looking for a way to beat the summer heat, fishing a tailwater trout stream is an obvious choice. With predictable flows controlled by hydroelectric dams, these are waters where temperature and oxygen content remain relatively stable year round. For trout and angler alike, tailrace fisheries are an oasis in the deep summer heat. While life in all but the highest-elevation free-flowing streams is suffering from heat-induced lethargy, tailwater trout remain active and healthy. Whether it’s the White River in Arkansas, Maryland’s Gunpowder Falls or Georgia’s Toccoa River, there are some constants when it comes to fishing tactics in deep summer. No two rivers fish the same, but trout prefer similar conditions wherever they live. • Fish High — When cold water from the bottom of a deep reservoir is pulled through generation turbines under various methods of oxygenation, flows released below the dam offer excellent conditions for trout. This only extends so

far downstream, though. Summer heat and the sun warm the water, which is also robbed of its oxygen content in the absence of aerating shoals. For anglers on most tailwaters, this means the first few miles below the dam will be the best place to fish. • Fish The Morning — In the depths of winter, sleeping in and fishing the warmest part of the day is often recommended. The opposite is true in summer. Anglers and trout will be more comfortable in the early morning before the sun has had a chance to heat the shallows. Fish are more likely to be up and feeding when the sun is not cooking their backs. Get on the water at daybreak for a few hours of action and then go eat brunch.

• Fish The Shoals — Shoal-broken water has more oxygen. Trout seek out water with higher oxygen content, and their metabolisms also churn when there’s more oxygen in the system. Especially in low-light conditions, work the runs and pockets in the shoals to find actively feeding fish. • Fish The Holes — Find a good deep hole beneath a turbulent shoal and use plenty of weight to dredge the bottom. Deeper water is colder water. When water temps begin to rise, trout go deep. You might find a pod of hungry trout hugging the bottom, or you might find that one fish big enough to have the whole lie to herself.
