ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. I
t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

oastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida), Duke Energy and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have historically partnered on initiatives to enhance Florida’s fisheries, and the organizations are again joining forces to address the loss to the redfish population on the southwest coast as a result of red tide. The nonprofit CCA Florida, Duke Energy and FWC will be releasing over 10,000 Duke Energy hatchery-reared redfish following the Florida red tide bloom and when waters are determined to be safe, thanks to a donation from the Duke Energy Mariculture Center. “We’re all aware of the devastation the red tide has caused our fisheries and we’re thrilled to partner with Duke Energy for this amazing redfish stock enhancement initiative,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “We’ve asked our members and anglers throughout the state to catch-and-release, but there’s more that needs to be done, and this partnership—as with our ongoing re-
lationship with Duke—will help to repopulate a fishery that’s iconic to our state.” The initiative will take place when the waters are determined to be clear of red tide and will include the release of 200 tagged adult (25- to 30-inch) redfish and 10,000 juvenile (4- to -6-inch) redfish into the waters of Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. “Duke Energy is committed to environmental stewardship,” said Eric Latimer, Duke Energy Florida Mariculture Center Manager. “Fish mortalities associated with the current red tide bloom in southwest Florida have broad impacts, both to our state’s interconnected biological systems and to the people that make a living from and enjoy our natural resources. We are proud to play a small part in the solution by restocking fish that will contribute to the overall restoration of the affected areas.” “We appreciate the valuable support from CCA Florida and Duke Energy in helping enhance our world class redfish fishery,” said Eric Sutton, FWC Executive Director. “This team effort will benefit conservation, outdoor recreation and the state’s economy in many ways.” In addition to the stocking enhancement initiative, CCA Florida and FWC are encouraging anglers to help all inshore populations by releasing their catch. This summer, CCA Florida launched the “Release Them For Tomorrow” campaign as a way to support several species’ growth through catch and release. “It’s going to take everyone doing their part to get our fisheries back to health,” said Gorski. oastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida) is partnering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Mote Marine Laboratory (Mote) to address the loss to the snook population on the southwest coast as a result of the red tide event. The two-year initiative includes raising and releasing 10,000 hatchery-reared juvenile snook along Florida’s southwest coast and will launch in April 2019 following the Florida red tide bloom and when waters are determined to be safe. Fundraising for the program, a cost of over $440,000, will include outreach to the community through an Adopt-A-Snook program and the formation of additional private-nonprofit partnerships. “Anyone who lives or fishes the southwest coast understands the devastation our fisheries are seeing from this red tide, and it’s our duty to address the issue,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “Snook are an iconic fish to our state, and we are extremely excited and honored to partner with FWC and Mote to help recover
this fishery and enhance it for future generations.” Snook are one of the most sought after catches by anglers in southwest Florida, and they return to the same beaches to spawn annually during summer. Unfortunately, summer was also a peak time for red tide toxins along the beaches of Gasparilla and Little Gasparilla Islands. “The continuing impacts of red tide in southwest Florida are evident to all of us who call these communities our home,” said Dr. Michael P. Crosby, Mote president & CEO. “One of the potentially most devastating and highly visible impacts around Charlotte Harbor was to the spawning snook population. Many of the dead snook were laden with eggs to produce the next generation.” With support and partnership from CCA Florida and FWC, Mote will restock juvenile snook to specific, tidal-creek “nurseries” that would usually be supplied by spawning aggregations hit hard by the bloom. Each of the hatchery-reared snook will be tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to allow Mote scientists to monitor and track the progress of the juveniles throughout the study, which includes monthly stocking efforts designed to elevate the system towards its carrying capacity. Mote’s experimental work has shown that the abundance of juvenile snook can nearly double in underutilized nursery habitats through stocking 10-month-old juveniles. In addition, ongoing Mote studies suggest that tagged, juvenile snook find some degree of refuge from red tide in tidal creek and riverine environments with fresher water less conducive to the red tide. In addition to the stocking, anglers are encouraged to help snook and other inshore populations by releasing their catch. opefully, the shallow inshore flats will begin clearing up after the rains of August and September. If so, the bite should improve--that’s not to say the bites been all that bad. We’ve still been catching fish. It’s just a little difficult to see them in the tannin colored waters. They’re eating almost everything offered, and we’re certainly doing more catching than fishing. So, as late summer and early fall temperatures approach, it’s a great time to fish. Cooler temperatures make fishing more tolerable. If you want to catch a snook, redfish, trout, mackerel or perhaps a mess of snapper, now is the time. Redfish are showing up around the grass flats and mangrove shorelines. This is the time of year when some of the big reds show up. You never know whether you’re going to catch one in the slot or one of the giants over 30 inches. As they look for food from area to area, you can often find them by simply watching the water. As they move, the school humps the shallow water. It can be very subtle or very aggressive
depending on their speed. One of the biggest mistakes made by anglers is chasing a school of spooked redfish. Instead of chasing, just wait, let them calm down, and return to feeding. If you immediately jump on the trolling motor and start chasing, that’s all you’re going to be doing for the next hour or so is chasing a school of redfish. We’ve been catching sea trout on deeper hard bottom grass flats. Frequently, when you catch one, there are others in the same area. We’re having success using greenbacks and small pinfish. Live shrimp always catch trout. I nose hook pinfish and greenbacks. I hook shrimp in the carapace just under the horn. Depending on the water depth, a popping cork will sometimes draw attention to the bait. Most snook being caught average in the 22 to the 25-inch range. But if you work at it, you could boat one in the slot--especially as fall approaches. We have caught one or two in the 29 to the 35-inch range using live greenbacks. Always released them for next time. For me, they are such a great species. I like to practice catch and release. I personally don’t see a reason to kill them for the table. They taste no
better than other fish and are such fun to catch. If you want fish for the table stop by the market and grab a nice piece of grouper or snapper. We have been catching good sized grey snapper at the bridges, rock piles and on the grass flats. Some topping out around three pounds. Remember, they are a reef fish and, according to the rules, you’re supposed to use circle hooks. Cobia are showing up on the flats and reefs. It usually only takes a chum bag over the side to spark their curiosity. If you hook up, be ready with another rod and bait as others often follow the action. ctober is one of the premier fishing months in the state of Florida. The water and air temps are coming down and the fish are in transition mode to their favorite winter hang outs. That is what makes it such a great month to get out and do some fishing. The bait, which can be a little tough to find in the warmer months, seems to be everywhere. We all know that a live well full of live bait this time of year can lead to hours of fun. The flats have already come alive with giant hungry redfish schools and speckled trout of all sizes along with ladyfish, bluefish, flounder and jacks. The cooler water temps put fish in the mood to feed and induces a feeding frenzy on the flats and in the back country. Snook will be feeding heavy this month-even they know that Mother Nature is fixin’ to cool things down. Target the mouths of the rivers, residential canals and flats adjacent to deeper water for best results. They’ll start to stack up in these areas in October. Off the beaches, the fall kingfish bite fires off this month and with any luck will last a while. A sharp cool down and they could blow right through. The last few winters have been so mild that
we’ve had kingfish almost all winter long. Anchoring up over hard bottom and chumming or slow trolling with live baits are both great options. Anchoring up is better for action as the Spanish mackerel and sharks will come around as well. If you want a big smoker kingfish, trolling is the way to go. Be sure to leader up with a short piece of wire as the toothy kingfish will normally make quick work of a mono or fluorocarbon leader. Be sure to fish a light drag on these fish as well. The strike is quick and fierce and giving that fish a little room to run before tightening the drag will up your catch rate. Remember to practice some catch and release for a few months as the red tide has wreaked havoc on Florida’s west coast this summer. Everything we put back today will lead to better catches tomorrow. RECIPE OF THE MONTH TUNA MELT

I
have found a wonderful new tuna. I had noticed over the years that tuna’s flavor in a can had changed. It wasn’t what it used to be when I was a child. I love tuna! I decided for this month’s recipe I would do my version of a tuna melt. Ingredients: • I can of tuna. I now use Blue Harbor Wild Albacore in Water with A Pinch of Sea Salt • 2 tablespoons of good mayonnaise • 1/2 of a pita bread • Sharp cheddar cheese • Salt and pepper to taste
Directions: • I blend the tuna and mayonnaise in my Cuisinart. • Add my salt and pepper. • Remove from the container and place evenly on pita bread. • Turn oven on to 450 degrees • Put cheddar cheese on top and place in oven. • I keep an eye on it because oven temperatures vary but it’s usually around 7 minutes--give or take a few. Set your timer for 5 minutes and go from there. When the cheese is melted, remove from oven and enjoy. I like to eat mine with dill pickles.

ishing does not have to be difficult or expensive; but, it should be fun, relaxing and a good time. Folks seem to make it more than it really should be when they would like to begin fishing, or their child says, “Hey Dad or hey Mom, can we go fishing sometime?” As a seasoned angler and outdoors person, I truly believe introducing a young person to our outdoor recreational world is one of the preeminent things we can do as recreational outdoor enthusiasts. But, as parents, what the question comes down to is where do I start? Just remember, fishing doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive. The only real requirement is that it’s enjoyable and fun. Every week, millions of viewers watch their favorite TV fishing shows. They watch their favorite anglers fish from the newest fullyequipped vendor-sponsored boats catching fish using the latest hightech vendor-sponsored equipment and tackle. Unfortunately, the high percentage of those viewers quickly realize there is probably no way they can ever afford to take their son or daughter fishing in one of those rigs. Well folks, it’s not about the latest and greatest. Sure it’s nice if you can afford it, but the average family can’t afford a $70K or $100K fully rigged fishing boat, motor, and trailer plus another $1,000 worth of tackle. Don’t use the crutch. I can’t afford it and let it stop you from taking your son, daughter or family fishing. You can catch fish using a $3.00 cane pole, a piece of monofilament fishing line, split shot sinker, hook, and a can of wigglers or a $29.95 rod and reel combination.
Don’t let anyone convince you to spend a fortune to go fishing. It can be as simple or difficult as you make it. You can start with the basics. Then, after you discover the joy and relaxation from fishing, it’s up to you how much you spend on equipment. As your interest grows, you can always learn more by attending the local fishing seminars, reading this free publication or hiring a full-time professional fishing guide. Hiring the right guide is important. Now you’re at the point where you have a basic understanding and want to improve your skills and knowledge and are willing to pay someone to teach you. Some guides don’t like sharing their knowledge, so be certain you make your intentions clear when hiring someone that you want to learn. I’ve been fishing the Tampa Bay area since around age six, and believe me, I’ve got a lot of fishing gear--much of it high tech stuff. Even with the latest and greatest, I know I can still catch fish with only basic stuff and often enjoy using a cane pole to fish for bluegills, shell crackers, and crappie (speckled perch). However, when using my very best high-end rod and reel combination, in my simple mind, I pretend it gives me an advantage. Then occasionally, when my confidence level soars to a feeling of superiority over those simple pea brained size adversaries I’m trying to catch and I miss a big strike, it quickly settles me back into reality. WHEN IN DOUBT FISH FOR TROUT BY: CAPT. ANTHONY CORCELLA
T
he speckled sea trout is the everyman’s fish. They are found from the beaches to the top of the bay. Almost any grassy flat will hold them at some point of the year. We will focus on the late fall bite, As the water temperature cools toward that magical 74-degree mark, the trout will begin to school up on the grass flats in water from two to six feet. If you get into a school, it can be fast and furious action--with a fish every cast for hours. Most of these fish will be from 14 to 18 inches. Trout must measure 15 to 20 inches with only one fish over 2 inches. There is a four fish limit in the bay and surrounding waters to the south. Most anglers want to target the bigger fish--those over 24 inches. It’s not as hard as you think. Scout grass flats with moving water, multiple potholes and sandy spots. These are ambush points for the bigger trout. Look in shallow waters in the early morning and late afternoon for the best shot. As the sun
comes up, try deeper areas with the same characteristics. Trout are easy to catch on live bait or artifices. Top live baits are shrimp, greenbacks, and small pinfish. Trout will also hit fresh cut bait like pinfish or menhaden. Dead shrimp will work in a pinch. Put the baits under a popping cork, give it a few jerks and let it sit. The trout will come if they are around. The same technique works with a soft bodied jig. Trout will destroy jigs, subsurface lures and jerkbaits. If you really want to have fun and also shots at some monsters, go with a topwater lure like a Zara spook Jr in bone color. While it works best in low light conditions, they will hit it all day long. Whether using cut bait or lures, it always helps to add a little Procure fish attractant scent to your offering. Top scents are shrimp, inshore blend, and ladyfish. Trust me it works. Set-ups for trout should be reels in the 2500 to 3000 range loaded with 10 to 15-pound braid and fluorocarbon leader from 15 to 25-pound depending on if snook and reds are around. A 7-foot 6-inch fast action rod complete the setup. Trout bite is best on a moving tide. They will feed throughout the day on moving water.
Trout also feed aggressively at night and can be caught fishing around dock lights. This is fun fishing, as you can sight cast the fish and watch them hit. Lastly, trout make great table fare and fried trout is tops on many lists. Just make sure to cook your fish fresh. They do not freeze well. Only keep what you plan to eat and always release the big females over 24 inches. We need the breeding stock--especially with the fish kills to the South. A
n old song that comes to mind on this trip is” I couldn’t sleep at all last night…” and that’s how it was with me. I was looking forward to fishing with two top guides in the Pine Island area, Capt. Luis Silva and Capt. James Marko. The weather was looking great for tomorrow’s trip and Rolando, my best friend and co-host for the filming of my Hispanic TV show, was excited to be part of the trip. A quick breakfast and we loaded our Okuma tackle, food, drinks and our camera equipment into our 26foot Pathfinder. With a turn of the key, 300 horses came to life ready to take us to an adventure. Our first stop was just behind an anchored shrimp boat about 18 miles west of Boca Grande Pass. We traded six packs of beer for a bunch of bycatch and the right to fish around his boat. I could not believe my eyes looking at over 20 big bull sharks just cruising and looking for food. Out came our big Okuma Azores 80 reel with matching rod loaded with Fins 80-pound braided line, six feet of wire leader and a 12/0 hook. Big chunks of bonita tossed into the pack and the fight was on. We each took turns fighting this beautiful 10-foot bull--if you can call them that. What felt like an eternity was really an hour fight, and we landed our first prize of the day. Next, was another 20-mile run west to a spring which dropped from 80 to 140-feet. There, we set our anchor lock on the trolling motor and dropped down with 3/0 circle hooks and small pinfish. The big flags (yellow tail snapper) hit, and in no time, we caught our limit. The secret to this spot is to watch your sonar and see at what depth the fish are sitting and keep your bait close to that depth. The only distraction was a few amberjacks and small sharks that got
in the way. Now, on we went to our third and final stop of the day. This was Capt. James’s specialty-catching big goliath grouper. We began going east about 22 miles to one of his many nearshore spots that hold these big beautiful fish. Here we pulled the big guns out--anchor rope with 8-foot of cable and 24/0 hook plus a big 10-pound bonita. Since the tide was slow and the depth was only around 45-feet, the weight of the cable and the dead fish was enough for the hook to slowly sink to the bottom. I don’t think it was more than a few minutes before we felt the pulling of the rope we had tied to the tee top. The fight was on, man against beast, foot by foot until he conceded. A couple more minutes, and he would have been the winner. I never let on that he almost had me. Boca Grande has always been known as the tarpon capital of the world, yet overlooked for its great offshore fishery and inshore waters that offer snook, trout, redfish and flounder year-round. FLATS TO NEARSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. GARY BURCH
T
he temperature of the inshore waters in St. Joseph Sound and Clearwater Bay is cooling down. The days are shorter and there’s a lot less sun light. There probably will also be some cool fronts that pass by. Both help to cool the water. In October, you can get a down-rightcold front that drastically drops the temperature way below normal and shuts down the fishing for a few days. Hopefully, we maintain some type of consistency. Look for our local flats fish to start shifting into their Fall patterns. The magic temperature is just below 80. Redfish will show up in larger numbers on the usual grass flats all
around the bay. On all of my trips this month, I will be in constant look out for schooling redfish. Search flats with grass, sand holes and scattered oyster beds along a mangrove shore line. Stealth is the way to go when approaching a redfish school. The best live baits are sardines or small pin fish and even fresh cut bait works great. If you find schools of redfish, they should remain in that general location of the bay through November. Trout fishing on the flats will improve in October and get much better next month, as the water temperature cools further. Trout move into the bays in the Fall and Winter and supply plenty of action. Search areas around 3 to 4-feet deep with grass bottom. You may have to cover a lot of ground to find them but, when you do, there will be a lot of fish in the school. They can’t resist a well-placed artificial with noise and flash. Get some live shrimp and drift the grass flats on the north side of Dunedin causeway. There should be trout out there. Snook are on the move as well.
As the water temperature cools, expect these fish to move away from the beaches and passes to fall or pre-winter locations. Depending on how cold the weather gets, some snook can be found just inside the passes. Also, explore the spoil islands in the bay. Investigate docks on the East side and cuts leading into the backwaters. Live white bait may be your ticket to catching the linesiders. Mackerel and king fish will be on the menu later in October when the water temperature drops below 75 degrees. Lots of fish will be caught just off the beaches of Sand Key, Johns Pass, St. Pete Beach and along the ship channel of Tampa Bay. Slow troll blue runners, ladyfish, mackerel or large threadfins in these areas. There are some 40 and 50-pound fish caught every year in these locations. Fall fishing can be the most exciting time to be out on the water. You can pick your species to target and most of the time you will find and catch’em. It doesn’t matter if you are on a boat or the causeway, there

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO
I
T’S TIME TO GO! This is going to be one of the best spec seasons ever! We’re told that some good size specs are showing up early this year. The specs are mixed in with lots of shell crackers. It’s also been a good year for crackers. The abundance of rain has created an ideal fishing environment! If you’re coming over to the Auburndale area, you’ll find the best fishing spots are currently Lakes Ariana and Juliana. Those lakes are experiencing good bass fishing in the 3 to 4-pound range. A majority of anglers report using a lipless crank bait for best results. When fishing for catfish, you’ll probably want to try Lake Juliana, which is also good for blue gills at this time. Here in the Lake Alfred area, Lakes Haines, Rochelle and Alfred are offering some premium fishing as a result of the favorable running water environment. We’re getting great reports of good limits on big shell crackers and blue gills, along with bass in the 3 to 6-pound range. In this area, our anglers report mostly using spinner baits and lipless crank baits. When fishing for bass, our two best recommendations are the Booyah lipless crank bait in royalty color and Bass Assassin Vibe Tail Worm “Ding Dong” in assorted colors. You’ll probably find some nice size catfish when fishing Lake Rochelle. When fishing gills or crackers, your best baits are always live crickets and red worms. Heading over to the South Winter Haven Chain of lakes, first-class fishing reports are coming in from lakes Shipp, Summit, and Cannon,
especially when fishing the mouth of canals and areas with fast running water. Lake Shipp is reporting bass catches of up to eight pounds. The best recommendations are to fish along the shore line at the park. Swim baits like Bass Assassin Boss Shiners are a recommended
choice. The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments is winding up for this season and will come to an end Thursday, October 25th. Weekly registration is $30.00 per boat (1 or 2 man) and the tournaments run from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM each Thursday. Prizes are awarded for BIG BASS and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place categories. ishbrain has announced an integration with Siri, enabling the virtual assistant to suggest the best fishing spots and to log catches. The new feature was addressed at the unveiling of iOS 12 at yesterday’s Apple’s Event. This means that when Siri is asked a question such as “Where can I go fishing?” it will open the Fishbrain map, zoom into the user’s surroundings and show waters, catches, and other key fishing intel. Users can also use Siri to log their latest catch, with the shortcut opening the Fishbrain app and allowing them to insert the fish’s species, weight, rod type, bait used,
etc. Siri over time will continually learn their behavior and suggest these actions on their iPhone lock screen or in Spotlight. elcome back Yak fans. This month, the story is about the art of fishing backwards! As some of you know, I have a favorite spot I always head to at high tide--it’s called home! But, due to circumstances, a trip to Ozella got cancelled. I had everything loaded and nowhere to go, so I went fishing! I suppose an explanation is in order as to why I don’t like high tide fishing. The area I was fishing is about 20 miles of salt marsh and flats. As the tide comes up, the fish move in making them way harder to find. Therefore, on the outgoing tide I set up and let them come to me. The day called for a midmorning high tide at about three feet, but it went way beyond that! If you’ve ever fished the marsh and grass flats, then you know that your buddy can be on the other side of the grass line and you can hear them, but not see them. That wasn’t the problem on this day. The water was within inches of the top of the grass. I could see the other kayak nearly a quarter mile away--there was that much water. So, I figured if the fish move in, so will I. We worked our way back in further than I have in years. The little foot wide creeks were now three to four feet deep--it was awesome. The deeper we paddled the more movement we saw. We were getting back into the actual tree line--places you can only paddle to a very few times a year. To give you an idea, you know how the snails will work up the grass to stay out of the water. At the high end of the tide we were so far back in, the critters at the top of the grass we’re grasshoppers. LOL. As we got all the way back to the forest tree line, I asked my buddy “When we’re this far back, do we need a fishing license or a hunting
license?” We turned at the tree line and I immediately caught a couple of nice black drum and then ran into a school of big reds. This is why I call it fishing backwards. We were so far in that the fish following the high tide were coming to us. Well, I’m not going to change my habits or my preferences for an outgoing tide. It was interesting to be able to paddle around a half a mile back in from the outer mangrove line. By the end of the day, we had landed some nice reds and then we saw some big snook, but they didn’t want to play that day. The other benefit of fishing a super high tide is that you can explore your favorite marsh area and pick up details for later trips. I learned a lot just being able to see over the saltgrass--give it a try. Hope to see you out there. ver two decades ago, we incorporated Ana Banana Fishing Company in North Hutchinson Island Florida. In 1999, we moved to Apollo Beach Florida and started chartering full time. Our son Joseph was one year old and our daughter Brooke was born four years later. We’ve had our ups and downs. Some of our downs were red tide, fish kills, oil spills, record cold snaps, hurricanes, recessions, tornado’s, chemical/toxic spills, several different resort and marina owners changing hands at Little Harbor, EPA area seagrass closures, Homeland Security area restrictions, manatee area restrictions and several other
personal and professional trials and tribulations. k fishing fanatics--are you ready for some great fishing? October will have more than just tricks or treats. As the water temperature begins to drop (already about 5 degrees from a month ago) you’ll start to see the trout, mackerel (Spanish & kings) redfish, bluefish, cobia and gag grouper bite getting better every day. The trout and redfish are moving into the
shallow flats. Start out early in the day or later when the water temp is cooler. Work the rock piles, grass flats or any nice-looking shoreline. I like to use top water plugs like the Zara Spook, in the bone color for some explosive strikes, or a popping cork with either a shrimp or three-inch Gulp shrimp in the pearl white. These baits are also great for locating fish. With the stone crab traps being put in this month, it means there will be thousands of chum spread out in the Gulf. What does this mean you ask? Well, with the cooler waters and the chum, the gag grouper will move into these areas. If you can navigate through this gauntlet of buoys, you’ll find some great grouper fishing. I love to troll some of my 15-30-foot-deep spots with short diving plugs. Rapala and Y-Zuri make some great plugs.

Run these down to the right depth of the plug and be ready for a drag ripping fight. When trolling slows, anchor on some of these spots and start bottom dropping with either live fresh cut baits or frozen bait like thread fin herring. I use 60-pound mono with a 4 to 6-ounce lead attached to a 5/0 to 7/0 circle hook. Hold on tight to your pole or you might lose it. Also, with circle hooks do not set the hook, just reel-reel- reel. A lot of times, I’ll just let Rodney rod holder do the work--he doesn’t get excited and set the hook. Scallop season ended Sept. 24th. They were spread out a bit. You may have had to move a few times, but all it took was some persistence to bag some of those tasty morsels. In this picture is Capt. ith the end of Florida’s heat wave in full effect and the weather being mildly cooler, many anglers are looking to cast their lines at fish willing to eat. Spotted sea trout have made their way into Tampa Bay in great numbers. They are well known for their dominant presence during the winter months and, historically, peak in numbers November through February. They can be found at any of the St. Petersburg bridges, docks, seawalls, jetties, canals and shallow to deep grass flats. I always head to my favorite trout spots this time of year to find them. Where there’s one, there are a bunch. These hungry shallow water predators can almost always be found stacked up anywhere that has a drop-in depth adjacent to a sandbar, or sandy patches and potholes on grass flats. Take advantage of the

mild water temperatures, as the fish are more active. Baits I use for spotted seatrout are scaled sardines and live shrimp. Both baits are presented on a size 1/0 hook free-lined. You can sight cast or drift fish these baits. Livingston Lures “School Master” in a pinfish pattern, and a Po’boy 90 SU in a new penny color are my top choice artificials to use for trout if you desire to cover a large area in a small amount of time. I have had great success with these lures targeting spotted seatrout. These baits feature an EBS system that exceeds the performance of your typical integrated rattle tube. I
t’s just a matter of time before we start to get the negative tides we’ve all been waiting for. But, until they arrive, here’s what has been going on around the area. Redfish have moved back in with the schools of mullet. Try and target them at the lower end of the tide. That way you can get a shot at them without being tucked under the mangroves. Trout has been solid in the deeper pockets. Soon, they will start to move around oyster bars and the big gators will migrate in for their winter time breeding. Juvenile tarpon have been plentiful in the rivers this time of year and very active since we have had steady rain. Throw a smaller twitch bait rigged with a single hook on the back for your best chance at a hook up. Snook have moved back into the creeks. Look for heavy current with an ambush spot for them to attack. If you catch one, I’m sure there will be another sitting in the same area! T
his summer, we celebrated sharks and stayed glued to the TV during shark week. Ana Banana Fishing Company has been filmed by the Discovery Channel a couple of times doing shark research for shark week. The reason Discovery Channel contacted us to film shark footage is that during summertime, Tampa Bay is the shark capital of the world. Tampa Bay is known for having the largest population of sharks and the biggest variety of sharks on earth. We don’t have many shark attacks in Tampa Bay. I think the reason we don’t is that sharks are here for two things-feeding and breeding. Sharks have no reason to mistake a human for anything they feed on in Tampa Bay. In late spring and early summer, thread fin herring flow into the bay from the Gulf of Mexico. Spanish mackerel, kingfish, tarpon, ladyfish, blue runners, bluefish, jack crevalle and many other predators chase the large pods of thread fins into the bay. Tampa Bay is shallower and more confined than the Gulf and these predatory fish can easily corral the baitfish. When these gamefish feed on the pods of threadfins, they cause a lot of carnage. Because of the blood and fish pieces, this carnage is like a shark calling card and the hunters become the hunted. Sharks come in as the cleanup crew and will feed on anything from a oneinch piece of threadfin to a 6-foot tarpon--depending on the size of shark. Sharks come into the bay looking for love and looking to feed on fish only, unlike other areas of the world where sharks feed on seals and mistake surfers for seals. Nothing they feed on here can be mistaken for humans and I think that’s why we don’t have too many shark attacks in Tampa Bay. Most of the shark
attacks I’ve heard of over the years are either spear fisherman getting hit by a shark while the shark is attempting to steal the bag of fish connected to the spear fisherman, or anglers handling sharks wrong while trying to remove their hook. We’ve talked about shark attacks on humans, let’s talk about human attacks on sharks. There are places in the world where humans are putting a dent in the shark population unlawfully, but Tampa Bay is not one of those places. In some places of the world, shark meat is on the top shelf and bringing the most per pound. FWC has very strict rules on size limits and bag limits. Different sharks have different size limits, but the bag limit is the same. The bag limit is two sharks per day, per boat, for human consumption. Ana Banana Fishing Company has worked with many marine biologists that hire us for shark research of skin samples, fin samples, whole shark studies, fluid dynamics studies and tagging programs to determine length, weight, sex, condition and breeding patterns. These marine biologists have told us that the shark population in Tampa Bay and surrounding gulf waters is flourishing. These same marine biologists work closely with FWC and EPA to determine shark harvesting limits, and they have determined that it is legal to harvest two sharks per day, per boat, for human consumption. hen people ask what my favorite fish is to catch, they expect me to say billfish, bonefish, tarpon, striped bass, redfish or another popular species. They are often surprised by my answer. I tell them that the ultimate challenge to me lies in catching a free-swimming fish that I can see. It doesn’t matter whether I am using live bait, dead bait or artificials. And, I don’t care if I am trolling, drifting, anchored or standing on shore. The task centers on hooking and landing a fish on or near the surface that I can see. I have never had much interest in any type of tournament or contest. If I find a fish swimming at or near the surface, it lights my competitive fires. Since the fish is on the move, it won’t be in casting range very long. I may only get one shot or possibly two. It’s a disappointment when my casts are on target but the fish I am trying to catch has lockjaw or I just can’t find the trigger mechanism to make it strike. Those of us who have fished a long time have learned that fishing is a game of minor variations. The difference between a blitz and a bust may be extremely simple. One minor change in tackle or technique can turn defeat into victory. You might have to use lighter line, a shorter leader, or modify the speed of retrieve if you are using artificials. Perhaps it is a momentary pause shortly after you start the retrieve. Try vibrating your wrist on the rod hand to make the lure flash underwater. Above all, it’s vital to be observant.
And that also means checking other boats and anglers to see what they are doing. There is no better time to study fish behavior than when you can see your quarry and can watch its reactions to your attempt to elicit a strike. If you analyze what you have witnessed, it will help you use the knowledge to catch fish when they are not visible. You also need to understand that maintaining the cutting edge as you would when you see your quarry is not easy. When action is slow, it takes determination to fish with the same excitement as you do when your target is right in front of you. When you are presenting a bait or lure to a fish on the surface, your offering must look like it is trying to escape from the predator. If the fish thinks its prey is charging it, you can bet your quarry will spook. Let me stress again that it must look to the predator (and not to you) that its prey is trying to escape. And, if you are presenting an offering to a school of fish, you want it to move in the same basic direction as the school rather than toward it. Everybody has good days and bad days on the water, but to achieve success on the tough days, you have to work even harder. Newcomers to fishing often believe that the experts harbor secret lures and techniques that are closely guarded. The truth is that they work harder at catching fish than most people, and they keep changing their approach until they are successful. Try it!

hile the fall season for gag grouper opened June 1 for most Florida state and federal waters of the Gulf. The Gulf of Mexico gag grouper recreational season in state waters off Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties did not open until Sept. 1. Gag grouper season will remain open for all state and federal waters of the gulf through Dec. 31. The minimum size limit for gag grouper is 24 inches total length, and the daily bag limit is two fish per harvester within the four-fish grouper aggregate bag limit. ampa Bay Estuary Program (TBEP) was recently awarded $1.5 million to support projects with local government partners that will restore coastal habitats, improve stormwater quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The money comes by way of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, which administers a trust fund created with penalties from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These funds will be used to implement five coastal restoration and climate resilience projects within the TBEP’s watershed boundary: • Tidal recirculation and seagrass recovery at Ft. DeSoto Park (Pinellas County) • Restoration expansion at Robinson Preserve (Manatee County) • Invasive plant removal at Cockroach Bay Nature Preserve (Hillsborough County) • Stormwater improvements at Copeland Park (City of Tampa) • Biosolids-to-energy facility development (City of St. Petersburg) Local benefits include habitat restoration for approximately 650 acres of coastal wetlands, 14 acres of coastal uplands, and 2 acres of freshwater wetlands – improving their capacity to support native wildlife and provide ecosystem services such as flood mitigation and pollution reduction in the Tampa Bay estuary.

and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. He’s one of those anglers who knows there are still plenty of fish in the famous inshore waters around Titusville. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. That fly worked for the 26-incher on the cover, but this time of year presentation is much more important than fly selection. ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. O
ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right
