Outdoor Holiday Shopping
The holiday season has rolled around once again. If you are like me, you are most likely racking your brain to identify and purchase gifts for those important people in your life. Some anglers have a multitude of angling items and gadgets, so finding something that they do not already have can be difficult. On the other hand, finding a fishing item that they may actually use over the course of a fishing season can be another dilemma. As you search for holiday gift purchases, consider shopping at locally owned angling and sporting goods stores. These are many times small businesses that are the foundation of America’s economy and seem to be having a difficult time competing with the large, national, so called “big box” stores as well as online sales outlets. Most of these smaller stores have knowledgeable sales staff with excellent customer service that can provide gift ideas to you geared towards the angler’s preferred type of fishing. Another advantage is that you can actually see and touch the item to be purchased to judge its quality and features. Another thing that I enjoy about local sporting goods outlets, though they may have a smaller inventory, sometimes classic left over stocks of lures and similar products no longer available at the big box or online sales outlets can be found. Finding original balsa Bang-aLures, Big O’s, or other discontinued tackle lines has occurred to me more than one time over the
course of my browsing. As years go by, I seem to be doing more and more of my angling purchases through on-line outdoors and angling websites and vendors. Multiple purchases can be made from your computer allowing completion of gift purchases for several persons at one time without leaving your office or home. This certainly saves time and the frustration dealing with crowds at various shopping areas. A disadvantage is that you can read about an item to be purchased, yet not able to view it until the item arrives at your location. Like many anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts, I enjoy browsing around the big box outdoors stores. They have a large selection of items that can be picked up and viewed by the potential purchaser. A disadvantage is that these outlets only carry selected product lines. Accordingly, you may not find the specialty or niche fishing items found at smaller, locally owned sporting goods stores. Don’t forget about homemade angling or angling oriented items. If you tie flies or jigs, making these in various color or size combinations are nice gifts. These handcrafted flies and jigs can be packaged into a nice box for presentation purposes. Fishing also seems to stimulate ones appetite. Prepared specialty and snack foods such as deer or beef jerky or similar foods that can be consumed while on the water are good gift items.

I certainly spend my share of hard earned dollars at the big box stores and online angling websites. Their large inventories of fishing products in one location allowing purchase of multiple items are certainly a draw. However, remember to spread some of your wealth around to your local sporting goods outlets or specialty stores. Don’t forget about those special angling gifts that you can make. You just might be able to find the perfect gift for that sportsperson in your life this holiday season; maybe even a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime. Light Tackle for Winter Bass Over the past couple weeks, I’ve had several calls and emails from anglers asking “How are you catching those bass in super clear water?” My response has been to slow down and go light. Then I remembered writing an article a couple years ago and figured it might be time to dust it off and rework it a little bit. Some anglers live by the old adage, “It takes a big lure to catch a big fish.” This isn’t always accurate, especially during the cold winter months. Sure, you might lose a few fish that might have been landed on heavier tackle, but experience has shown that one can often catch 10 times more fish by using light tackle, and you can land any size fish if you take your time. Light tackle means different things to different people. Here is my take on the how-to and benefits of light fishing, the biggest of which is catching more bass! During winter and hot summer months, many lakes and ponds tend to become ginclear, making it easier for fish to spot heavy lines. The four and six-pound lines, in most cases, are nearly invisible to fish, even in very clear water. When employing light line, you must have the proper rod and reel combination. The reel must have a drag system that works well and does not freeze up. This is essential because a big fish can easily break the light line if the drag doesn’t
work properly. Your rod needs a good soft tip, while yet having a strong backbone for the hookset. My light tackle lures include Rapala Shad Raps, Rapala DT-6 crankbaits, Missile Baby D-Bombs, Twin Turbo Tail, Fuse 4.4 and Yamamoto-Kut Tail 5 inch worms rigged on a Spot Remover 1/8 ounce head. To me, it means a 6’6” to 7 foot rod that weighs very little with a soft tip, such as the Duckett Micro Magic or Ghost Series, medium or medium heavy spinning rods. The reel is a Lew’s LS300 which is designed for four to eight-pound test line. I hardly ever use the eightpound line, as I prefer six-pound test Pro-Elite Fluorocarbon from Vicious Fishing. With this setup, I can easily cast lures weighing as little as 1/16 to 1/8 ounces jigs and including small crankbaits. Light tackle and methods may be used anytime by anglers who find this style and philosophy of fishing appealing. However, there are a few special situations where light tackle is the most practical and productive fishing method available. Here is some situations when I change over to light tackle: Where fishing pressure is heavy: Heavily pressured fish get spooky, and they become less likely to bite large, fast moving baits. However, they are much more prone to eat lures that are inconspicuous in terms of size and action.
Extremely clear water: Crystal clear water is another condition that makes fish spooky. Thin line is less visible, and smaller baits are more visible, and smaller baits are less threatening, hence more appealing than larger lures with abrasive actions. Post-cold front conditions: Another perfect example is when during or after a cold front blows through, the skies clear and the barometer rises. Most anglers say bass get lockjaw. Bass get uncomfortable, much like we do after eating Christmas dinner, but we still snack on small stuff. When natural forage is small: Match the food source! When minnows or insects are small, predator fish refuse to bite larger baits, but smaller lures which approximate the size of the natural food will still work.

706-884-1483 or 706-882-1743 Bass: GOOD - With the cooler surface temps has come much better fishing. Surface temps for the most part are in the upper 50's to mid-60's. As winter approaches, hungry bass feed up. Shallow to mid depth areas are consistent now and should stay that way unless we get some really cold weather. Shallow to mid depth crankbaits like Rat-l-Traps, Bandits and Little Johns allow you to cover water fairly quickly to find actively feeding fish. Some fish will continue to hit topwaters such as Whopper Ploppers, Zara Spooks and Zoom Super Flukes as well, especially around shallow cover or if you find them actively feeding on schools of shad. Try targeting areas in pockets north of the railroad trestle up to the 219 bridge in the Chattahoochee. Also have a jig handy to pitch into any wood cover in these same areas. For some fat spotted bass try casting Spot Remover heads loaded with Zoom Shaky Head worms to chunk rock banks. Try a small Texas rigged worm or a pig-n-jig around blow down trees. Try fishing around the bridges and bridge pilings with small crankbaits, and Tommyhead rigs, especially during periods of water generation. During December, spoon fishing and drop-shotting normally gets into high gear for a mixed bag of spots, white bass, hybrids and stripers. Target 15-20 feet of water near the river channel or in the mouths of major creeks. Linesides: GOOD - Hybrids & stripers are down lake in good numbers. Expect the down-line bite on live bait and the jigging spoon bite to continue to be good from now and all the way throughout the winter. The usual humps and dropoffs in the Chattahoochee and the mouths of most major creeks should produce. Some fish are surface schooling on the main lake on overcast days and can be caught on Rooster Tails, Russ' Bucktail Jigs, pop-n-cork rigs and Storm Swim Shad lures. Gulls and loons usually show up in December and can help you find actively feeding fish. Trolling with A- Rigs is also normally effective. Crappie: Good - Try targeting blow downs and brush piles in 3-8 feet of water. I recommend the cuts and coves north of Highland Marina in the river and in Yellow Jacket Creek this time of year. Jigs or minnows fished under a float will usually work on these fish when you find them. Most of the docks that still have water under them have brush piles around them, making them easy targets. Some crappie will remain deeper. Try around structures such as sunken brush piles and blow down trees. Try drop-shotting minnows in 1015 feet of water for good results on these deeper fish. Spider trolling should also pick up toward the end of December.

The river is dropping and scattering the fish. The tournament fishermen are working hard to catch a good limit. Small bass are plentiful and fun to catch. The trash piles are holding bass. Crankbaits and Carolina rigs are working. Jigs are a good choice as well. The shallow bass are still working the bank lines and are hitting soft plastics. The pad cover is dying back but frogs and spinnerbaits or buzzbaits will work early and late. Crappie are in the trash piles in 10 to 20 feet. Jigs tipped with minnows are getting a good mess. Trolling is picking up and working the creek drops are getting a bite now and then. When the cool weather settles in, the trolling will pick up. Cats are doing well. Lake Sinclair
Forecast by Ken Sturdivant ken@southernfishing.com Lake Sinclair is down 1.2 feet with the water clear and the temperature in the mid-70s. Bass fishing is fair. More bass are moving toward the creeks and coves. Early morning topwater action is good and possibly getting better. Most any surface lure could catch a few fish, but buzzbaits are really starting to shine. A good approach is to have at least 2 baits ready to use, one a 1/8 to ¼ ounce model, and the other a 3/8 to ½ ounce size. Generally a white or chartreuse/white bait is good, but black, June bug, or other dark colors can be better at times, especially on cloudy days. Scan any of the many lakes docks with the Lowrance Structure Scan technology and look for the fish suspended under the docks. No fish, don’t fish it. Try using multiple casts to the same likely looking cover. At times, many of the fish will not strike at the first or second offering. Other baits like a Sebile Swimmer, Pop R or Chug Bug can also be best on any given day. Docks and boathouses are holding some large fish that are hitting jigs and large worms. Lightweight Texas rigs and jig head and worm rigs may catch more fish from the docks, but the jig and large worms should catch one or two kickers. Rat-L-Traps and shallow to medium running crankbaits are catching a few fish now.

The water temperatures are in the mid 60’s and can reach the upper 60’s if the outside temperatures reach into the upper 70’s and 80’s. The weather has been warm and according to the projected weather patterns for the winter we should have above normal temperatures. With that said, the fishing should be good for the remainder of the winter. The warmer than normal water temperatures will mean that the hydrilla that usually dies back in the winter will continue to be heavy in some areas. Fishing has been good in November and I expect that to continue on into December. The unusually warm temperatures this year have kept the fish in a fall pattern, and I expect that the temperatures will stay warm, and the fish will still be easily targeted in shallow water and on shallow points. Baitfish should be bunched together along the banks and are the primary target for most of the species of fish. Best lures for largemouth bass, spotted bass, hybrids and striped bass are swimbaits, Rat-L-Traps, small crankbaits and spinnerbaits. If the water starts to cool off and if the outside temperatures start to drop into the 30’s and low 40’s, with the weather we have been having doesn’t seem likely, the bass should transition to a winter pattern. If that happens the bass will either move off into deeper water on the main lake or move to deeper cover up the river. Pig-n-jigs and spider jigs will be a good bait during this time and also deeper crankbaits. Carolina rig worm, and jigging spoons can produce good bass. If the water temps fall into the upper 50’s and lower 60’s, striped bass and hybrid bass can be caught in deeper water either with rubber jigs or crankbaits. Look for baitfish schooling in the deeper channels, and if you find the schools moving on the surface, then a Rat-L-Trap, jerkbait or topwater bait can produce good stripers. Crappie are currently feeding on the shad and can be caught along the banks, in pockets or in the channels around structure. If the water temperatures fall into the 50’s and lower 60’s, expect the crappie to move into deeper water around brush piles, docks and other structure. Fishing under the bridge at Halawaka Creek will also produce crappie. Best baits are small jigs or minnows. Good luck fishing.

The fall pattern is in full swing. As the bait have migrated to the backs of pockets, the bass have followed. The early bite can be hit or miss, so concentrate on any kind of rock with a square bill crankbait. The crankbait bite should last all day as the bass are willing to chase baits. As the colder weather approaches, the crankbait will get better. Also throw a jerkbait in the same areas. The worm and jig is always a good bait this time of year as well. Lake Oconee is full with the water temperature in the low 60’s Bass fishing is fair. Most of the lake is clear with some stain up the rivers. Up the Oconee River flipping blow downs with a 1/2 ounce black jig can work a big fish but only get a few bites a day. Fish brush piles down lake in 15 to 20 foot of water using a Senko. Fish the bait on a Texas rig and work thru the brush very slowly. Remember, this time of year is all about the bait. Find it and you are more than likely going to find the fish. Flipping a zoom crawfish in the watermelon color under docks where deep water is nearby will also bring you a few bites. Work all areas around the docks until you find where the fish are holding. With the Lowrance Structure Scan technology anglers can look under the lake’s many docks and count the fish. Not all docks have bass on them and search first and then fish. Crappie fishing is good to very good. The fish are still on the submerged timber from 5 to 15 feet deep. Use your Lowrance to locate the trees with the most fish on them and then drop live bait or jigs into the top of the tree. This will produce good catches of crappie. Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs.
Lake Seminole

fishing on Lake Seminole has been great! Topwater lures have been very productive with a Strike King Pro Model Buzzbait in chartreuse/white being one of my favorites because the bait comes with a good hook and has a very unique sound to it that drives the big bass crazy. Because the cooler water temperatures are running the baitfish into the Spring Creek arm of the lake, jerkbaits have been very productive this fall as well. I like a Strike King KVD Jerkbait in the color sexy shad which resembles the baitfish and the big bass seem to like it. Hybrid and stripers have been being caught on A-rigs in the Spring Creek arm and the main part of the lake. We have been seeing a lot of schooling activity. It's hard to reel an A-rig through them without them trying to jerk the rod out of your hands. The crappie have already started to bunch up and are being caught from 10' to 12' of water on minnows and jigs. Numerous limits are being brought across the docks at Wingate's Lunker Lodge by the campers in Bass Island Campground as well as other locals. Recently, a couple of young men from Cairo, GA came over and bought some minnows from Ms. Jane and were back within two hours with limits of crappie and thanked Ms. Jane for selling them such good minnows from Wingate's. Duck hunting season is coming up and we have been seeing plenty of ducks mixed in with the coots. We think they've figured out that is good camouflage for them. We also saw a band of Mallards recently but not sure if they stayed or not. We're hoping this cooler weather will bring them in for the season.

Pretty weather, pretty water and most of all BETTER THAN pretty good fishing (it's awesome) in December. Most any given day in December you are subject to seeing gulls and fish busting bait balls on top of the water. If you’re lucky enough to be in casting distance when this happens, cast something topwater past the bait and work it back thru the ball of bait and hang on tight! If topwater isn't working for you, then try casting a swimbait, spoon or bucktail jig in the bait ball, let it drop about 3-5 seconds, then start working your choice of lure back to you. This sometimes will not only produce fish but bigger fish that hang just a touch deeper than the other fish that's in a feeding frenzy. Another lure or rig not to overlook is an umbrella rig (my favorite is Capt Mack’s) trolling it per the directions that are packaged with each rig. The other rig to try is the "A" rig that can be cast, but beware you need to back off your drag some because a big striper or several bass are likely to hit it at same time. If there's ever a better time than spring to land a trophy striper it is definitely December here on Lake Martin. We couldn't haul in a pickup truck all the trophy stripers that we have caught in December over the years. My favorite trophy bait in December is gizzard shad and red horse suckers being pulled behind planer boards. Transducer and Depth Finder by Billy Darby How-To When Bob Rice asked me to contribute to The Angler Magazine, my question to him was, “what do you need?” His answer was to provide some how-to information to our readers. The single question anglers ask me about the most is “Can you help me set up my depth finder?” My friends buy a new unit and ask me to help them install it. Where do you put the transducer? The transducer must be installed in a position that allows undisturbed water to flow from under the boat hull directly to the flat surface of the transducer, no gaps, perfectly level to the hull but slightly tilted looking forward about 2%. Any deviation from this "must" creates air bubbles which sonar can't penetrate. Mounting your transducer on the first step leaves an air void when planed off, and your only transducer to water contact is when idling. Even this creates a disturbance that prevents ultimate performance. Some boat styles force you to create a platform of fiberglass or a special bracket to install your transducer on. If you elect to install your transducer in your hull, allow a professional to do so, especially if it is a side view style unit, and even this compromises the unit’s ability to see clearly. Your unit must be mounted in your scope of reading vision, about the same distance from your eyes as a comfortable reading distance. Your unit will give you intimate detail of terrain, structure, schools of prey and the predators when adjusted properly, and if can't see this detail, why spend big bucks for exclusive features? Feature adjustments are for your eyes only, and only you can select the best color scheme, sensitivity settings and ranges of desire, etc., and the list goes on. Countless times my customers have exclaimed about how clear and detailed my screen is while traveling at planing speeds, and my answer to that is that my unit and transducer is set up correctly. Time spent on the water or in your garage studying your instructions, pulling up how-to articles on the web, time spent on the water without any fishing gear available, is quality time. If you have a good buddy with a unit comparable to yours, ask for some advice. I have spent untold hours trying to help others, and others helping me, to obtain a 101 degree in enjoying life. When the temperature starts falling close to freezing and water is left inside your engine or gear case, the results could be a cracked block or housing and a repair bill in the spring that runs from hundreds to thousands of dollars. It is easy enough to prevent this unhappy circumstance by putting our boat's engine to bed properly at the end of the boating season. Oxidation and rust never stops, but freezing kills. Allowing corrosion to flourish during the offseason is less dramatic but equally destructive. Corrosion can establish a foothold on idle components, so liberal use of corrosion inhibitors, both internal and external, is a second guiding principle for winterizing. Many fishermen use their outboard powered boat year round, so I will concentrate on the I/O and inboard boat winterizing procedures that we follow here at Randall Marine in Phenix City, AL. If your owner's manual includes winterizing instructions, then that is the procedure you should follow. In the absence of manufacturer's instructions, I will list the engine winterizing procedure we use at Randall Marine for I/O and inboard boats. Some steps on our list may not apply to your particular engine. The only items you should need to complete the task yourself, other than your engine's normal lubricants are: an aerosol can of fogging oil, a fuel stabilizer and for inboards and I/O's, a gallon or two of non-toxic propylene glycol antifreeze. If your engine has a closed water cooling system, drain and replace the coolant. Most coolant loses its anti8 SOUTHWEST GA EAST AL
corrosion properties over time, so replacing it every year with a fresh 50-50 mix protects the inside of your engine. Check your engine oil and filter, and change if necessary. Add a good fuel stabilizer and fill your fuel cell to 90% to prevent internal condensation in the tank. Check your fuel filter, replace if necessary and check for fuel leaks. Crank the motor and allow it to warm up and distribute the stabilized fuel thru the fuel system. While the engine is running, remove the flame arrestor and spray fogging oil into the air intake. Give it an extra heavy shot just as the engine starves and dies. DO NOT spray fogging oil into any fuel injected motor. Extend the control cables from their housings and coat them with grease. If you cannot remove them, tape an oil-filled bag tightly around the high end of the housing; the oil will work its way down the cable. Lubricate linkages and pivots. Spray any unpainted parts of the motor with anti-corrosion protectant. If your boat has a stern drive you will need to follow the above list for protecting the engine, but add to that several items from the outboard list for protecting the lower end. An additional requirement is filling the drive shaft housing with the appropriate lubricant. Remember that a stern drive needs to be in the full-down position for draining the water passages and for checking or adding gear lube. Store it in the down position. If you are going to store your outboard engine, follow these simple guidelines. Use a flushing attachment or run the outboard in a tank filled with clean water. While the engine is still running, disconnect the fuel line from the engine. When the engine dies, the fuel delivery components will be empty, preventing gums from forming in the stagnant gasoline and clogging lines and jets or injectors. Before the engine runs out of fuel, spray fogging oil into the carburetor(s). Fogging oil is an anticorrosive that will protect the internal surfaces of the carburetor and the cylinders. Typically the engine will run rough just before it runs out DECEMBER 2017
of fuel. As that happens, give the carburetor(s) a heavier shot of fogging oil to make sure internal surfaces are fully coated. Disconnect the flush attachment or remove the motor from the flush tank. With the motor upright, let all water drain out of the pick-up. Open drain plugs (if any, see your owner's manual) to empty the powerhead and intermediate housing. Rotate the flywheel of the motor a couple of times by hand or "bump" it with the starter to empty the water pump. If the motor will be exposed to freezing conditions, it is essential that no water remains inside. Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil into the holes to coat the interior surfaces of the cylinders. Rotate the flywheel a few turns to spread the oil on the cylinder walls. While the plugs are out is the time to check them and re-gap or replace as required. Reinstall the spark plugs. Clean all pivots and visible gears and protect them for the winter with oil or grease, as specified in your owner's manual. Use lubricant specified in your owner's manual. Fill oil tank. This will

prevent condensation from forming inside the tank. Clean and lubricate your propeller shaft, and have the propeller serviced if it has signs of damage or impact. Drain your fuel tank and fuel supply lines. If emptying the tank completely is not practical for your boat, then top it off to 95% full. Gasoline with ethanol is subject to phase separation if water gets into the fuel, which it will surely do with a halfempty tank over the winter. Filling the tank limits the air space inside the tank and reduces the potential for internal condensation. If you cannot drain your tank, STABILIZE the fuel. If you leave your tank full, dose it with an appropriate amount of gasoline stabilizer to combat the formation of passage-clogging gums. This may seem like a lot of work, but your spring boating pleasure will be better assured if you have taken the time to protect your boat, your motor and your trailer from possible winter damage. The Tennessee, Wilson Dam and Brian Barton Sheffield, Alabama is easy to find. From my cabin in North Georgia seems all one has to do is drive to Chattanooga and follow the Tennessee River through Alabama and you’ll end up in Sheffield. That’s good. North Alabama is dominated by the Tennessee. Every town, multiple bridges all lead along the river to Sheffield and beyond. But I’m slow in getting to my story. Brian Barton and I had been trying to schedule a fishing trip to the river for some years but have always gotten waylaid somehow by rain, storms or what not. This time it came together. Jeff Alligood, my show cameraman, editor and allround partner for the last 25 years, and I drove over on an early morning in October and located Brian at the dock and ramp about a mile downstream from Wilson Dam which holds back Wheeler Lake and pushes fertile waters down into Pickwick Lake. It seems that fall’s falling seasonal temperatures invite billions of baitfish upstream from Pickwick to the hard surfaces of the dam to spawn. Wilson Dam is a huge structure belching water full of baitfish and a variety of gamesters that I’ve never witnessed. Get this picture. Brian operates a perfectly adapted War Eagle fishing boat for these waters. It’s large, spacious and all set up for boating large fish in large numbers. You do not want to try this the first few times on your own. You need Brian. The bait? Threadfin and gizzard shad that Brian has already caught. Tackle, relatively light line, say 10 or 12, small split shot and a Tru-Turn red light wire hook. Method? Brian navigates the boat to a special rocky flat behind the dam and we toss the live baits along the edge of the current and allow them to sink among the boulders, huge car size dark shadows in the current, and then just hold on. Whatayacatch? First of all, you get bit every cast, yes, every cast. Brian and I fished along the flat up against the dam and downstream less than 100 yards. In an hour or so, we caught largemouth bass up to four

pounds, smallies to six, channel cats to three pounds, black drum up 12 or so, hooked and lost stripers and/ or blue cats up to, I’m guessing here, sixteen to thirty pounds that we simply could not get out of the rocks, and even some very respectable two plus pound white bass. Many of his clients have boated blues to 70 pounds, largemouth to 12, garfish to 5 feet, white bass upwards to 4 and drum to 40 pounds. Brian fished for about an hour after we left that day. He had caught a six pound smallie and sent me the photo. Brian has a constant stream of clients with many making lifetime catches. Do you have to be an experienced tactician and angler? Not really. A rank amateur or child will get his string stretched dozens of times. I guarantee that if you have Brian and two anglers, someone will have a fish on the line all the time. It’s almost impossible to describe. There’s not much else to say really. Tell you what, look at the photos and use your imagination. here are several factors that cause cold numb feet during winter fishing. Lack of insulation layers and quality, too many socks causing constriction of blood flow, the wrong size footwear for winter application, and often overlooked, the proper ‘installation’ method of putting those items on in such a way that even the best gear can cause poor circulation. First, tight over-the-calf socks constrict blood flow. “Half-fold” the tops down the lower shin to allow better circulation. Secondly, pick footwear sizes for winter fishing and hunting that will give plenty of room for sock layers (and neoprene wader boot bottoms). Thirdly, use high quality merino wool sock layers with good loft. I’ve recently found Fits Brand socks (fitssock.com) and they contain a higher percentage merino wool than the competition, and they’re manufacturing process creates more loft. Loft equates to insulation. Use one liner sock like the Fits ‘Film’ liner and one thick merino wool sock. Finally, don’t hurriedly cram your feet into the boots. Make sure to bend your toes back and forth after putting on sock layers. Similarly, after the boots are on, walk around and bend the toe sections of the boots to loosen scrunched-up materials and layers inside the boots before lacing up.
