One trait that seems standard across the board is that whenever we find ourselves in a new destination, regardless of why we’re there, we always want to find out about “what’s biting.” Normally a quick trip to a local tackle shop gets us up to speed. I often hear from readers that they were in a different state or a different region and found a copy of our magazine at the tackle shop they went into. One such reader recently told me, “I live in Wilmington, North Carolina, and I read your Wilmington edition every month. I was in Mississippi recently on business and I saw a copy of your magazine at a local tackle shop. The next month I was in Key West, Florida and saw a copy of the magazine at a tackle shop there. I just landed in Connecticut today and can’t believe that I just picked up another copy of your magazine at a tackle shop here in Connecticut. You guys are everywhere.” It is true; we are available for free in over 30 market areas, but we’re not everywhere yet. Back To Basics: 4 Ways to Catch More Fish

s a fish-writer, occasional lecturer, and long-time deckhand in the party/charterboat fishery, I’ve spent untold thousands of career hours trying to help relative angling novices identify realistic ways to improve personal catch rates. To seriously understate the matter, amateur fishermen tend to attack the sport according to ideas drawn from flatland living--project human behavioral patterns, logic, motivations, etc. on their quarry-and wind up overthinking things to death. Accordingly, I’ve learned to present fishing lessons within a human framework so guys can fit what they learn into a context that will help them retain and build on newfound knowledge as they delve deeper into the hunt for more and bigger fish. I’ve logged as many hours trying to find parallel techniques, aptitudes, specific formative experiences, or personality traits among highliners (the oft-discussed 10% of fishermen who catch 90% of the fish). The dynamic, variable-rich nature of rod-and-reeling, and a more/less endless thicket of needlessly technical information and opinion, both add to the challenge of extracting the small percentage of useful info that can directly impact your results. The following four ideas represent the pieces of the puzzle that have proven most useful in my efforts to help newbies move toward that allimportant point when they “learn how to learn” on their own. These core concepts cross target species, fishing grounds, technique, or seasons, and if you’re eager to improve your own score, they should help.

Conservation of Energy

I constantly find myself harping on one point in discussions about (1) catching big fish, and (2) training oneself to view the activity through the fish’s eyes. If you want to understand your quarry, you must embrace one overarching rule of fish survival: balance the ledger of calories spent against calories gained. Therein lies much of what you need to know to successfully target big fish. It also helps account for some otherwise tricky issues of timing in terms of fish movements, both the big-picture migratory movements and the smaller localized movements according to tides and other pieces of the conditions puzzle. The key is to understand the way various behaviors--where and when they feed, where they go when they leave a place you can dependably intercept the fish. Fish don’t reach trophy size chasing ever possible meal. They learn to time their feeding forays to points in a tide when they can hunt without burning up reserve energy fighting current, fleeing from predators, or chasing small, low-nutrition feed that won’t begin to offset calories they spent catching it. When an inlet is loaded with, say, bay anchovies, the reason to abandon “hatch-matching” in favor of big, slow, attention-getting plugs is rooted in energy conservation: give them a meal that looks like a sound caloric investment.

Consider that migrant stripers travel on or around the big spring moons to capitalize on a fair-tide (i.e. with tide) boost that puts more open-water miles behind them for way less energy out. Consider that stripers tend to concentrate down-tide of high spots, rockpiles, or ledges to use them as current breaks which let them hold position finning slowly ahead, stemming the flow. It’s surprising how many common scenarios in fishing eventually boil down to preserving energy.

Tide Management More often than not, best windows of fish-catching opportunity will relate to certain parts of moving tides, or periods when wind and sea conditions combine with specific tidal conditions. Other times, the challenge will be waiting for one piece of the overall conditions to change, putting fish on the feed, or, as when you encounter wind against the tide in drift fishing, finally letting you properly present a lure or bait to fish that had been there right along.

“If you want to understand your quarry, you must embrace one overarching rule of fish survival: balance the ledger of calories spent against calories gained.” Whatever conditions variables work best for a piece of real estate you fish, the key concept here is that when everything finally aligns, you will have some limited window during which to put some fish in the boat or on the beach before the fish scatter or lock up, or you can no longer present baits properly. Simple, stupid, or obvious as it may seem, one key practice nearly every 10-percenter lives by is the need to “get while the getting’s good.” It’s a lesson that’s hard to grasp on the single-trip scale, since the difference between two boats respective catches might be a fish or two. Sharp striper and tuna specialists tend to get downright cranky about every incremental moment of down-time when fish are on a feed--and rightly so. I’ve seen more times than I can count scenarios where we were hooking up on the troll as fast as I could set a line out (less than a minute from the second I put a reel in freespool to the moment the jig reached the right position, I engaged the reel and a 30-pound striper (or 50-pound yellowfin, etc.) climbed all over it. Meanwhile, a neighboring boat was catching good fish. But whereas we hustled lines back out, that crew would pause for photos, high-fives, snacks, whatever. There is, of course, nothing wrong with the latter; but we’re talking about the 10%. Over the course of an hour, we’d put a dozen in the boat, while our neighbor got 8. Four fish one day? No big deal... but four fish a day for 40 days? It can (and does) amount to the performance gap between a good fisherman and the top fisherman.

Crappies Are A Spring Delight BY TOM SCHLICHTER

he early spring waters were crystal clear and as I waded along the muddy shoreline I could see deep into the weed edges where bigmouths like to patrol. Passing by these traditional bass hot spots without casting, I continued on toward my goal - the mouth of a shallow cove where a dead and branchy tree dipped into three feet of water. I had crappies on the brain this morning. The bass would have to wait for another day. It took only two casts to know my efforts were worthwhile as a fat, slab-sided paper mouth pushed up a heavy wake and inhaled a small white spinnerbait. Three more casts produced two more crappies and I realized I was in fishing heaven. Over the next hour several more of the yellow-sided panfish would smack my lures. Two of them would top the 12-inch mark, a third pushed past 14 inches. Those are jumbo sizes anywhere – but especially here in the Northeast. SPRING DELIGHT Whether you live in Connecticut, Rhode Island or New York, crappies are spring delight. Willing, aggressive and capable of putting up a decent battle on four- to six-pound class spinning gear, they provide an entertaining change of pace from the never-ending pursuit of bass and trout. That’s not to say I don’t take crappies seriously, just that I really make the effort to enjoy them during the spring, which generally happens to be their peak season. Calico bass, strawberry bass and specks, as black crappies are also called, generally aren’t the most abundant of fish in Northeast

waters, so you may need to put in a time and effort to track them down. Going back only a couple of decades, they relatively sparse in the waters of Connecticut, Rhode Island and, especially Long Island. As a rule they inhabited bigger waters but these days there seem to be quite a few smaller lakes and ponds with substantial populations. I’m guessing you can chalk up their expanding abundance in part to a few “Johnny Crappieseeds” making illegal transfers over the years. While I’m all for catching crappies where they already thrive, it is important to note that “seeding” with these prolific panfish can have devastating effects on existing fish populations. In other words, don’t take spreading crappies into your own hands. LURE CHOICES Since crappies are fairly aggressive during the spring, you can catch them on a wide variety of lures. Early in the season, when the water is still cold, many anglers opt for a simple jig and float approach. This setup calls for suspending a one-inch curly-tailed grub 20 inches to 3 feet below a float. Tip the jig with a single wax worm or Berkley Gulp! Waxie, cast out and allow it to set for a minute or two. If you don’t get a bite right away reel in slowly, six inches at a time, and let it sit again. Most strikes happen while the jig and float are standing still. Crappies also strike many of the same plugs and spinners that anglers use to target largemouth bass. Because the panfish have smaller mouths and smaller bodies, however, you’ll want to scale down the size of the lures offered. Instead of a big spinnerbait, for example, try tempting them with a small Beetle Spin in chartreuse, black or white, or throw a 2-1/2-inch floating Rapala minnow. Silver in-line spinners, size 1 are another good bet. Both the spinners and

spinnerbaits work especially well when buzzed just below the surface as the water warms up from late April through late May. At this point, crappies are at their most aggressive and they’ll actually race to the wake of these lures in order to intercept a perceived meal. Yet another way to hook into some chunky slabs is to target them with fly-fishing gear. Big nymphs are my favorite choice for this with a black bead-head Wooly Bugger accounting for several crappies I’ve caught over the years that broke the 14-inch mark. Usually, I’ll slowstrip these flies in 2- to 4-inch increments, setting the hook if I see a line twitch or feel extra weight by holding the line tight and steadily raising the rod tip. This technique works best while the water is still cold and the weeds still have a foot or two to grow before reaching the surface. BRUSH AND FLATS You’ll find crappies like to hang on the edges of flats and along cove mouths, basking in the sun and enjoying the growing warmth of the shallows during April, May and early June. By late June, however, they’ll tend to push back into thick, overhanging brush or suspend amongst the branches of submerged timber and bushes. That means

Be Your Own Charter Captain and Follow the Fish! BY STAFF

t’s no secret that the salty waters surrounding Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island are some of the fishiest in the world. From bottom-feeding favorites like tasty fluke, sea bass, scup and blackfish to inshore gamesters including stripers, blues, weakfish and false albacore, the depths in this region are particularly fertile. Even better, there’s something to catch every month from May through December - and many recreational fish species attain lunker status. Of course, the action with each species rises and falls based on a variety of factors such as time of season, water temperature, abundance of baitfish and even fishing pressure. That means different ports light up with action at different times of the year. Some anglers do their best to follow the action by hopping on party or charter boats throughout the region while others trailer their own vessels from one end of Long Island to the other or up and down the New England Coast. Shore-bound anglers, meanwhile, do their best to find access from beaches, docks, jetties and parklands, hoping the fish will come to them rather than powering off to intercept the best of the action. Peter DeVilbiss and Dick Cromwell of Freedom Boat Club (www. freedomboatclub.com) think they have a better way to stay on top of the best fishing. They own and operate a total of 11 locations within our Coastal Angler coverage area where you can join-up, be your own captain and head out on your own schedule to find the best fishing. Look Shallow for Spring Schoolies

he marine section striper season (south of George Washington Bridge) officially opens on April 15 here in New York and for Long Island Sound anglers the date can’t come fast enough. That’s because the bass are usually here in substantial numbers by this point, especially if a slight warming trend precedes the season. As a rule, Long Island Sound’s April stripers congregate toward the west end, from City Island east to Hempstead Harbor. As the days pass, the action spreads east to Northport Bay, Hunting Harbor, Port Jefferson Harbor and Mount Sinai Harbor. The early action is typically an “inside” game, with the linesiders rooting around on shallow harbor flats in search of crabs, sea worms, mussels, clams and small baitfish. In addition to the good eats, the bass are drawn to the harbor shallows as these waters tend to warm quickly in early spring. It’s not until May that catches begin to solidify out in the open waters of Long Island Sound, proper. Typically, April bass are schoolies and you should expect to play catch and release most of the time - so break out your 12- to 14-pound test spinning gear, a seven- or eight-foot rod and have a blast. Although you’ll hear of an occasional 10- to 20-pound fish caught, most of these fish fall in the 14- to 24-inch class with a few 6- or 8-pounders keeping anglers on their toes. Expect the bulk of the keepers to arrive right before Mother’s Day. You can catch April stripers from shore or boat but either way you’ll need to stay focused on fishing in very shallow water during daylight hours. Bloodworms, whole clam and plugs will all tempt these fish with the real bait having a slight edge as the season gets underway. Turtle Cove, East Chester Bay and Little Neck Bay near the Throgs Neck Bridge are good starting points, with the bass quickly spreading east to Oyster Bay, Manhasset Bay, Hempstead Harbor and Glen Cove Harbor. In any of these areas, the key is to ride a rising tide up onto the flats to target waters that are just two to six feet deep during day light hours. Give the water a little time to heat up before you head out as the early morning chill seems to diminish the appetite of these first pass bass. Consistent catches usually commence as water temperatures ease up into the mid40-degree range. By 55 degrees, the action should be smoking.

Photo by Tom Schlichter. Early-season school bass tend to be aggressive but they strongly favor smallish lures as things get started. Three- and four-inch soft plastic shads, curly-tailed grubs and Fin-S-Fish, Berkley Gulp Mullets or Bass Assassins impaled on a one-half to one-ounce jighead work well. For this spring, Panther Martin has a new lure out called the Big Fin (www.panthermartin.com). It’s a weedless soft plastic that comes in both a 1-ounce, 5-inch size and a 2-ounce, 7-inch size. Your’s truly helped design it and last year as a prototype it slayed spring bass. The smaller size – in white with red fin – is what you want for the early season harbor and tidal creek action. Switch to the larger profile once the bigger bass track down the bunker schools. Throwing smallish crank baits, scaled-down poppers and hardbodied minnow imitations along the lines of a Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow, Bomber plug, Rapala suspending X-Rap or a silver-colored Rattletrap can also be a ton of fun. Tie a three-inch white, silver or blue/white teaser 20 inches above the main lure and retrieve your rig slowly. Some days it takes a little prospecting to find the fish but once you begin to turn them on the action can be red hot. Trolling is yet one more way to connect with early spring bass, and it’s perfect for those fishing from tin boats or kayaks. On clam days especially, you can troll the same plugs mentioned above, working slowly around the edges of flats or channel in shallow water. Kayakers really have an edge here as they can get way back into in water deep enough to hold bass but prohibitively shallow for most motor boaters. It’s also possible to troll sandworms at this time of year with great success. Rig up with 17- to 20-pound test abrasion resistant line and troll just fast enough to keep your line off the bottom while probing structure-laden waters like the Elephant Herd rocks in Hempstead

Harbor, near Harts Island or along the City Island docks. When setting up to troll worms, snell a 2/0 or 3/0 Gamakatsu or Mustad wide gap style hook directly to the line and set your bait out 35 to 40 yards off the stern. The idea is to tempt the fish to rise up from the bottom to strike the worm, so take up a few turns of the reel handle if you start to bump the sea floor. With the fishing regulations seeing frequent changes in recent years, it’s always a good idea to check in from time to time and make sure you know the current open season dates and legal sizes. As of press time, the season stretches from April 15 to December 15 with anglers allowed to keep one fish measuring at least 28 inches. you’ll need to change your perspective as the season advances. Either way, you’ll find crappies are most aggressive at first light and just before the sun goes down. If you can force yourself to fish through the aggressive evening clouds of mosquitoes and no-seeums in late spring and early summer, you’ll likely rack up your best scores of the season. Keep in mind that these scrappy panfish can be somewhat fragile if handled with a heavy hand. They are not nearly as tough as bluegill or pumpkinseed in general, and the bigger the crappie the faster it seems to fade. For this reason, it’s a good idea to crimp down the barbs on your lures if you plan to play catch and release. Keeping a forceps within easy reach as you might when trout fishing is also a good idea as it makes unhooking fish that have fully swallowed your offering a simple task. If released with reasonable speed, most specks will swim off in good condition. If however, a fish you intend to release seems sluggish, take an extra minute or two to revive it by cupping it under the pectoral fins and sliding it back and forth – gently – through the water. It’s amazing how quickly a spent-looking speck will respond to this simple measure. In as little as 30 to 60 seconds, most will wiggle free, fully ready to battle again the next time you are up to the challenge.

taking100 blind, fishless casts, make the most of the blitz for the 30 seconds or 30 minutes it lasts. It may be the only real fishing you do all day. And because not every day of the month or every week of a year offers equal opportunity in the catching department, this practice of making the most of the prime windows works on multiple scales. The sharpies know that certain stretches of calendar surrender a disproportional percentage of their big fish or big hauls. These guys won’t lose sleep for a slow pick of little fish. But when they land on a body of good ones and figure out the feeding patterns, they’ll hit it hard, chasing the tide around the clock over 10 days, pull double sessions 7 of them. As vast as its potential feels when a new shot of fish moves in, the fish always push on, or spread out, or stop chewing all too soon. Make no mistake: the sharpies have slow trips, slow weeks just like everyone else. But when it’s good, they know how to wring the last bit of goodness out of the opportunity.

I was sitting at my desk the moment I realized, years back, that four of the guys I would have put in a top ten list of the best overall anglers in my part of the world, each of them over 40, lived with their mothers-not that there’s a thing wrong with living with Mom. But it struck me as a particularly clear testament to the kind of singular drive, the hunger that separates good fishermen from “best.” No way around it: The top of the angler foodchain is no cinch. The fishery is the queen mother of all jealous-mistress undertakings. When you’re catching well, you’re afraid to miss a tide. And when you’re between shots of fish, especially during migration periods, you’re afraid to miss a tide. Hell, let’s be honest: from early April to the last gasp of December casting, you’re afraid to miss a night. Then, for one week, you’re vaguely relieved it’s over. By the following Monday, the withdrawals are setting in, and from there to April, you’re more or less stuck on stupid. Depressed. Point here is that precious few of us are cut out for the 10 percent. For one thing, fishing hard is seriously taxing on body and soul. For another, given the need to keep ourselves and our families fed, clothed, and housed warrants a job. There are life responsibilities. There’s a saying: If you want to catch a lot of fish, fish a lot. I’d add a point of clarification to this line. If you want to learn fishing at a high level, it matters how you implement “fish a lot.” Fishing a 24-hour marathon every weekend is grueling, but the real trick to accelerate learning is to fish daily. It’s not just total time thst counts. It’s watching the same waters under all the different combinations of conditions, but It’s equally critical to practice constantly so you can eliminate as many variables of technical execution, so that when you take a skunking, you can be fairly sure it wasn’t operator error. You master technique by steady practice over long enough that working a plug or dragging a strip bait perfectly becomes a matter of muscle memory. Regardless of the level at which you fish, your continued growth as a fish nut will require you to embrace the highest form of perseverance. That means shaking off the bad nights, the cold, dark, miserable, fishless, thankless nights when you break off a good one on the first cast then stink up the place for the next four lonely, impossibly tedious hours. And go again the following night and two nights thereafter, racking up two more skunking and just ducking a third with one sickly schoolie at the last second. Fish early, fish often, and fish carefully. Just keep it somewhere in mind that the goal of the whole manic pursuit is to have fun. Whatever your angling goals, make sure they leave room for the fun part of it. If it starts to feel like misery, change your gameplan.

f this photo of a happy kid with a humongous fish doesn’t make you smile, nothing will. Chase Stokes, 11, caught his 33.25-pound, 40inch carp on a nightcrawler while fishing at Otter Creek in Panton, Vermont in April 2017. It is one of the three state records caught by Vermont anglers last year. All of them are species not typically targeted. In May, angler Mike Elwood landed a record redhorse sucker while fishing on the Winooski River in Colchester, Vermont. The sucker, landed on a live worm, weighed 9.9 pounds and measured 29 inches long with an 18-inch girth. The third record for 2017 was a cisco, also known as lake herring. Alan Franchot caught his 2.25-pound state record while trolling on Lake Champlain in September. “We saw some incredible catches in 2017, especially Chase’s carp,” said Shawn Good, fisheries biologist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife. “It was an impressive looking fish, but what’s really exciting to me is that we’re starting to see more Vermont anglers fish outside of the box, as I like to call it, by taking advantage of many of the overlooked fishing opportunities we have in our state.” Good said fishing in Vermont remains excellent for traditional species like bass, trout, salmon and pike, but that anglers should take a look at some of the oddball fish like bowfin, drum, gar, fallfish and suckers that can provide great action as well as trophy potential.

It’s Tarpon Time In The

Florida Keys

t is the heart of the tarpon season in the Florida Keys. With the annual migration in full swing, there should be silver kings everywhere over the next couple of months. The big spring run begins most years in February. It can last deep into the summer when conditions are right. This is when the big fish are most vulnerable. Averaging 80 pounds and sometimes running much larger, tarpon in the keys offer a fishery unlike any other in the world. The west coast of Africa might have the world record 286-pound, 9-ounce tarpon, but nowhere in the world has the opportunities to sight fish tarpon like the Keys. Poling the flats, there is a very real possibility of encountering tarpon up to 200 pounds and heavier in shallow and ultra-clear water. Migrating tarpon will push up into the backcountry in the thousands, skirting the edges of the flats and channels. Staking out or anchoring the boat in an ambush point where the angler is likely to encounter numbers of hungry tarpon is best accomplished through a local guide who stays on top of the movements of these giant fish. One thing you’ll notice is that while some captains might guarantee “shots” at tarpon, none promise you’ll actually bring one boatside. With a fly, enticing a big tarpon to eat is something that takes a lot of skill and a little luck. First-timers are probably better off fishing live bait, and a crab fished under a float in the passes and around bridges where fish are

concentrated can lead to multiple hook-ups in a day’s trip. What follows is a fight that cannot be matched by any fish anywhere. The powerful runs and repeated jumps of a hooked tarpon are what made them so highly prized as a game fish. Even experienced anglers are frequently left broken hearted when the line falls slack. Winning a battle with Megalops is an achievement to be remembered. Winning the battle comes with a heavy dose of responsibility, as well. Tarpon have a life span of 50 years or more. They are slow growing, and it takes them seven to 13 years to reach sexual maturity. This and their value as a game fish make them susceptible to population decline. Every effort should be made to release them with the best chance for their survival. All Florida tarpon must be released, with an exception for anglers who have purchased a state tarpon tag for the purpose of achieving an IGFA world record. Large tarpon should remain in the water at all times, which means unhooking and photographing them should be done quickly, with an effort to keep the head and gills in the water as much as possible. Never attempt to drag a tarpon over the side of the boat. Tarpon will often fight to exhaustion, so reviving them after the fight will greatly increase their chance of survival. Hold them horizontally in the water with their mouth open, moving them forward to push water over their gills. Do this until they are able to swim off on their own.

arpon Springs, a small town on the west coast of Florida an hour north of St. Petersburg, is a best-kept secret for redfish and snook. It sits within a web of waterways connecting the Gulf of Mexico to rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes and eventually Tampa Bay. This vast system offers excellent inshore opportunities, and it’s a ton of fun to explore under paddle power. I know a local who grew up there and knows the water like the back of his hand. Kevin Hawkins, owner of Kaku Kayaks, invited me out on the water to try his newest SUP, the Voodoo. Kevin lives, eats and breathes fishing. When he’s not fishing from one of his kayaks or SUPs, he’s thinking about ways to design these boats so they’re better to fish from. The Voodoo is a hybrid that melds the best qualities of an SUP, a kayak and a micro-skiff. We launched from his local ramp on a Saturday afternoon a cou-

ple hours before sunset. I don’t have the words to describe the picturesque setting that spread out before me. Mangroves, oyster beds and hidden shoals were in abundance. We paddled to the tip of a mangrove island where a smaller canal led to docks, sandbars and windbreaks. We had to cross the main channel to get there, and there was a 1- to 2-foot chop with the boating traffic and winds. The Voodoo was stable and fast, tracking straight as it cut through the channel. I was surprised the chop didn’t offer more of a challenge, but the hull design of the Voodoo is flawless. It also features a chair, which—without adjustment—offers two seated positions and can be used as a poling platform. The boat paddles well from a seated or standing position, and the ability to make powerful strokes with a low center of gravity came in handy during the crossing. As we rounded the tip of the island, we found wind-shade in a pocket. We poled down to cast right under the mangroves and docks. The Voodoo’s stern has five molded-in Power Pole mounts that allow for dual or single Power Pole Micros. And from a stability standpoint, the boat might as well be the deck of a skiff. Kevin hooked into a 25-inch redfish and fought it with ease from the open deck. As we paddled through the backside of the mangrove islands, we cast to oyster beds and under docks. The final spot Kevin had planned was a back corner of an area with a long sea wall and sand flats. Kevin wanted to hit it right at sunset, when the redfish bite is best. ou couldn’t tell by looking in the tannic-stained water, but Capt. Gary Dubiel was convinced redfish were holding just a few feet from the bank. “Toss your line up tight and see what happens,” he instructed. My cork popper landed with a splat and the trailing DOA shrimp settled toward the bottom. I waited a second, gave a “pop” and watched the cork slide under with an 8-pound red in full protest. “They’ll smack that setup every time,” smiled the skipper. It’s no secret that the coastal waters of North Carolina teem with redfish and stripers, but many visiting anglers focus their efforts solely on inlet and ocean waters. For truly amazing topwater action, the bays, creeks and river systems are also well worth exploring. “There’s amazing variety on the inside here,” said Dubiel, of Spec Fever Guide Service (www.specfever.com), who specializes in putting light-tackle and fly-fishing fans right in the mix. Dubiel especially enjoys working the Neuse River area because it hosts stripers and seatrout year-round, plus redfish from spring though mid-October. “These stripers are estuarine and don’t run to the ocean,” he explained. “They typically measure up to 32 inches, which makes them perfect for light gear and fly rods. Even better, they mix in with the specks and slot-sized redfish. We often catch all three on the same trip.” The striper action really heats up in late April when the bass return from spawning farther upriver to offer outstanding surface action from Oriental to New Bern, N.C. Much of the fun takes place in knee-deep depths here in the river’s mouth at Pamlico Sound, and that makes for a ton of topwater thrills. Interestingly, the Neuse River—America’s widest at 6 miles across the mouth— doesn’t have a lunar rise and fall in tides. Rather than look for current, Dubiel works around structure while using a trolling motor to quietly get in and out of

Some of our wood fields are pretty expansive.” Push up into the Neuse River tributaries above and below New Bern and you’ll also find largemouth bass, crappie and perch. The creeks stay warmer than the river in the winter months, so there are times in late winter and early spring when you might catch any of these along with a striper, redfish or speckled trout as well. “It certainly makes for an interesting mixed bag,” quipped Dubiel. n sixth place headed into the final day of the Bassmaster Classic on March 18 at lake Hartwell, S.C., Alabama’s Jordan Lee was in striking distance to do what only two anglers have ever done—win the Super Bowl of bass fishing twice in a row. And he did it. With a final day surge that took him to the scales with 16 pounds, 5 ounces, Lee tallied a three-day total of 47-1 to edge out California pro Brent Ehrler by a single pound. With his Classic win last year at Lake Conroe, Texas, Lee joins Rick Clunn and Kevin VanDam as the only three anglers in the history of the sport to win back-to-back classics. With the $300,000 purse, Lee pushed his career earnings with B.A.S.S past the million-dollar mark.

“It was just a perfect week for me,” Lee told Bassmaster. “I caught fish on five different baits and a lot of different techniques.” Boat docks were the ticket to Lee’s success. Following poor practice rounds, he could not nail down a strong pattern. From Day 1, Lee reverted to his comfort zone and his strength. “I just wanted to cover as much water as I could to give myself the best chance of putting a bait in front of a fish,” he told Bassmaster. “On this lake, I knew boat docks were going to play because they always do—and that’s what I like to do.” Live on Day 1, video showed Lee pumping his fists over a chunky largemouth he finessed out from under a dock with black floats. Black floats tend to warm the water around them, and the fish were staging up prior to the spawn. A strong sack of 18-10 on Day 1 must have buoyed Lee’s confidence in the dock pattern. Despite catching nothing but smaller spotted bass and just 12-2 on Day 2, Lee was still solidly in the top 25 to make the cut to fish Championship Sunday. Lee found his magic pocket on Day 3. Fishing a Strike King Rage Swimmer, a Strike King Ocho and a Strike King Shimmy Stick, he stuck to that one little pocket and pulled fish from beneath almost every dock. Green pumpkin was his primary color. Jason Christie, of Oklahoma, who led through the first two days of competition, dropped back to third place after the final day with a three-day total of 45-15. Ehrler’s 46-1 earned him second place. Alabama pro Mark Daniels Jr. caught the Berkley Big Bass of the tournament, a 6-pound, 11-ounce largemouth that won him $2,500. ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.

3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! hen Jesus Chavarria was a small boy nearly 60 years ago, he remembers a giant silver fish with huge scales brought to the dock at his home in the small Pacific river port of Sierpe, Costa Rica. No one had any idea what it was. He went on to captain offshore sport fishing boats all over the west coast of Costa Rica for the next 35 years and retired a few years ago to taking guests fishing the backwaters of the Sierpe River. His specialty is snook but now and then he began to catch tarpon. Tarpon are not indigenous to the Pacific Ocean, but over the years anglers began to encounter a tarpon now and then. The thought is that over more than a century since it was constructed, the Panama Canal has provided passage for tarpon, which now reside in the Pacific. Tarpon capture has been recorded as far south as Colombia and as far north as El Salvador. Saul Porras’ capture of a tarpon that weighed barely 3 pounds at a creek mouth in southern Costa Rica changed the whole thought process. Chances that a fish that small swam through the canal and that far are slim. Are tarpon now breeding in the Pacific? FECOP, the sport fishing advocacy and conservation group in Costa Rica, agreed to sponsor a project to find out more about tarpon in the Pacific. They contacted Didiher Chacon, who had worked on a Costa Rican Caribbean tarpon project almost three decades ago in Barra del Colorado for Dr. Roy Crabtree, of Florida. He agreed to work on the science part of the project. “The Sierpe Wetlands are perfect habitat for juvenile tarpon,” explained Chacon. “That very well may account for the increase in numbers of tarpon caught there in the last few years.” Most of the river tarpon are small, less than 30 pounds, but fish as large as 100 pounds have also been taken. Phase 1 of the project will concentrate in southern Costa Rica. A DNA comparison will be done between Pacific-caught tarpon and tarpon taken from different parts of the Caribbean side of the country. They will also study what the Pacific tarpon have been feeding on. Today this can be done with a small tissue sample without sacrificing the fish. All Pacific caught tarpon will also be tagged. Chacon noted that there is a possibility over time for tarpon to change the ecology of the rivers. It is not yet known what they are feeding on or how they will affect native fish. The Pacific-side tarpon are now showing with enough frequency to make it worth finding out. Tropical storm Nate delayed the project when the massive amounts of rain that fell not only caused major landslides but also completely flushed everything out of most of the country’s rivers. ot long ago, people didn’t know there were great white sharks off the coast of South Carolina. Now, thanks to the obsessive pursuit of them by Outcast Sport Fishing Charter Capt. Chip Michalove, everyone knows they’re out there, and in numbers during the winter months. Michalove seems to have figured it out, and he’s not sharing his secrets for fear of hurting the species he spent more than a decade trying to pattern. The captain has caught nearly 30 of these apex predators over the last three years. His most recent catch has made national news after a post about him catching a 16-foot-long, 3,000-pound white shark went viral from his Facebook page. Journalist Mandy Matney wrote in Hilton Head Island’s Island Packet about Michalove’s giant fish. She reported that with a two-man skeleton crew, Michalove had to radio to another fishing boat for backup to bring the giant fish boatside where it could be tagged and released. Michalove tags great whites for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in Chatham, Mass., according to the Island Packet report. They are working to study the movements of the sharks in the Atlantic, and through technique Michalove does everything he can to put minimal stress on the animals.
